News Oktoberfest & Fossil Day in Hagerman

This Saturday, October 12th, Hagerman will host multiple events to celebrate the end of summer. Along with the 3rd Annual Fossil Day Celebration & Parade and the 2nd annual Oktoberfest, the Hagerman Valley Chamber will host a Open House/Highlight for the Hagerman Fire Protection District & Quick Response Unit (QRU). You are invited for free food, tours of the fire house, and fun for the kids. There will also be information about the upcoming levy election. On November 5th, residents of the Hagerman area will be asked to approve a permanent increase to the property tax levy of $100,000 to cover personnel costs for the Hagerman Fire Protection District. In 2013, the Fire District took over the QRU to prevent it from being disbanded. While this was a good move for the community, no extra funding was provided. The funds from the proposed levy will be used to cover QRU costs and to improve that service. It’s not an event, but starting at the north end of the city park a new pathway for walking and biking is ready to be used. Hagerman Valley Pathways has been working on this project for several years and the pathway along Highway 30 from the City of Hagerman to Billingsley Creek State Park is just the first phase. Check it out! The Fossil Day Parade starts at 11 a.m. at the Snake River Grill and ends at the Hagerman City Park. The city park will be filled vendors of all kinds including many of your favorite vendors from this summer’s Farmers Market. There will be LIVE MUSIC and other entertainment. Oktoberfest will be held in the parking lot between Bullzz-eye BBQ and brand new Wild Sweet Pea Boutiqe (next to Fire Pie Pizza and Wilson’s Club). This FREE family friendly event will have games and activities all day long.

Dyslexia Awareness Month

Decoding Dyslexia — an organization launched in 2011 by parents seeking to find and provide resources and support for kids with Dyslexia — has arrived in Idaho. Their goal is to bring light to a literacy issue that plagues 1-in-5 kids that sit in Idaho’s classrooms. The Governor of Idaho has paid attention and last Friday he proclaimed October as Dyslexia Awareness Month. Dyslexia is a neurobiological, language-based disability affecting 1 in 5. Dyslexia can include a cluster of symptoms, which result in people having difficulties with specific language skills, particularly reading. Students with dyslexia usually experience difficulties with other language skills such as spelling, writing, and pronouncing words to short-term memory processing issues related to word order/memorization/and communication. There is no cure for Dyslexia but with effective intervention those with Dyslexia can be supported and succeed. Dyslexia is referred to as a learning disability because dyslexia can make it very difficult for a student to succeed academically in the typical instructional environment, and in its more severe forms, will qualify a student for special education, special accommodations, or extra support services. -- -- -Decoding Dyslexia Idaho seeks to bring stronger resources to Idaho communities by helping parents and teachers find resources to support individuals with Dyslexia.
