Open House at Gooding Wastewater Plant

This Saturday, the City of Gooding will hold an Open House at their Wastewater Treatment Plant from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The plant is located at 1775 South 1800 East (take 4th Avenue West to 1800 East, then north 150 feet to the next road).

You are invited to view the recently improved Wastewater Treatment Plant, and learn how the City handles and treats wastewater, observe facility operations, and ask questions about the improvements (please wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes).

Wastewater treatment removes and eliminates contaminants from wastewater. There are several kinds of wastewater which can be treated, but the most common is sewage treatment. Municipal sewer or domestic wastewater is treated/cleaned so as to miminize impacts on the environment. It is also possible to reuse it for irrigation.

Heads Up, Drivers!

We have entered the season when deer are more active. It’s crucial to stay alert on the roads, even in the places you least expect to encounter wildlife. Deer can be unpredictable and often cross road unexpectedly. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

Slow Down: Reduce your speed, especially in areas marked with deer crossing signs.

Stay Alert: Watch for movement along the roadside, especially at dawn and dusk.

Brake, Don’t Swerve: If a deer jumps in front of you, it’s safer to brake firmly rather than swerve, which could lead to a more serious accident.

Note on Passing...

Most of us know not to pass on a solid yellow line, but sometime when we are rushing through some of our small communities, it is tempting to use that center turn lane to pass people exiting the roadway (i.e. Highway 20 at Fairfield, or Highway 75 at Johnny's Country Store). This is illegal and it will result in a ticket if you are caught by law enforcement (Idaho Code 49-644). Don't be the victim of careless driving - keep your eyes open. Do not think that you are immune to a human or animal caused wreck.

Ranked Choice Voting

Pierce County in Washington State tried Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) several years ago, and it was quickly repealed by 71% of county voters. Some in Washington are now proposing a state wide RCV, and Washington's Secretary of State Steve Hobbs recently wrote an op-ed explaining why this type of voting disenfranchises voters.

Secretary Hobbs wrote: "Even advocates of changing voting methods have conceded that 29% of voters don't rank multiple candidates in ranked-choice elections. This means nearly a third of ballots have reduced influence, an unacceptable deprivation. In findings released earlier this year, Princeton University professor Nolan McCarty examined ranked-choice elections in New York City and Alaska and found that minority voters are disproportionately shortchanged by this construct."

Here is a quote from the Princeton University professor who conducted the RCV study referenced by Secretary Hobbs: "In recent years, ranked choice voting has been hyped as a solution to many perceived problems in American elections. Unfortunately, the hype has often outpaced the evidence. My research raises major concerns about whether RCV may work to further reduce the electoral influence of racial and ethnic minority communities."

As you consider Proposition 1 here in Idaho, it is important to remember that there is a big difference between an open primary and ranked-choice voting. Moving to a open primary is a debate worth having. Adopting ranked-choice voting comes with a multitude of problems that even "liberal" states like Washington are likely to reject.

Senior Centers Face Rising Costs

Keeping connected is important for everyone, and it's especially true for senior citizens. Your local senior centers serve meals, offer health checks, and provide fun activities to help keep our elderly citizens active. But just like everyone else, they are facing economic challenges.

The cost of food and labor has been on the rise over the last few years due to inflation. This has resulted in the need for senior centers to raise the cost of meals - a difficult decision when many seniors are living on fix incomes. But... you can help!

Senior center meals are not just for seniors. Your meal might cost a little more than for those who are over 60, but every time you buy a meal, it benefits the center. Senior centers are always welcome and appreciate volunteers and donations.

Cup of Tee by Tee Hurd

This last weekend, our tractor pulling club (Treasure Valley Antique Power Association) went to pull at Shindig Farms in Nampa, Idaho. At Shindig Farms there was the works for kids. Some of the attractions included a straw maze, slides, bounce houses, mechanical bull, swings, pumpkin gathering, and a hay wagon (just to name a few).

At our pull, there was a young family in the spectators. A child had a cast on his leg, but he sat and was thrilled with the tractor pull.

The mother of the child stated to Barbie (coowner of Shindig Farms) that her child had one of the best days he had had in a long time, just watching the tractors. But... she was puzzled with his fascination of the tractors. Why do kids like tractors so much? That's a good question.

Children have an addiction to things that make noise, move, and have flashy lights. The things that fit these categories are: trucks, trains, firetrucks, ambulances, and of course... Tractors.

When a child is small, they learn that by doing some action, something happens - sort of a cause and effect process. If they move their legs, they can propel themselves. By playing with tractors, they can push it and it rolls. Usually, toy tractors are small enough that a child can

keep a hold of it and it goes with them. It makes them feel a sense of ownership.

Older antique tractors have a distict sound. The sound draws the children's attention. It's a different noise than they hear in an everyday household.

In addition to sound, tractors are the basic colors that children learn to recognize at early ages. There are greens, blues, reds, oranges, and whites which are the colors first learned. Kids can relate colors to images by seeing tractors everywhere they go. Kids in car seats are analyzing the whole world as they ride as a passenger.

A parent should acknowledge when a child sees a tractor in the field. It confirms their learning process. It starts a base that further knowledge can be built upon.

When playing with toy tractors, kids create a sense of imagination whereas they are controlling something of power. They develop problem solving abilities, hand to eye coordination, spatial awareness, and even creativity.

Tractor create a sense of family. My grandpa drove one of those, my dad drove one of those, or the tractors are family members themselves from the farm.

Tractors aren't a gender thing. Girls react the same way as boys when made aware of tractors.

This is the "Pulling" for my “Cup of Tee.”

Barbara "Nicole" Barker

Barbara "Nicole" Barker, born February 18th, 1982 in Miami Florida, was a cherished mother, sister, daughter, friend, and wife. She was known for her kind, loving, caring, and humorous personality and she left us all too soon on September 18th, 2024.

Nicole was survived by her mother - Peggy Moon; her two sisters - Roxian Rosel (30) and Rubyan Rosel (29); her brother - Bradley Keller; her four daughters - Madison Whatley (26), Samantha Knigge (24), Alexis Harris (20), Mia Barker (15), and her two sons - Tre Barker (18) and Dru Barker (16). She leaves behind a legacy of love for her beautiful 6 grandchildren, in order of age - Hennesea Phillips (8), Greyson Smart (6), Colten Knigge (4), Esmerae Whatley (3), Caelan Knigge (3), Knoxtyn Whatley (2), and holds in her heart an angel baby whom she now holds in heaven.

Nicole was not only survived by but, inspired by, the life and love she shared with her best friend, soul mate, and husband - Scott Barker. Their love was nothing less than fate, transcended through life events and trials that brought them together. Their love was and will always be a beautiful testament to how God really does know what he is doing. Her departure from this world leaves an unfillable void in all of our lives.

One of Nicole's most commendable accomplishments was achieving 10 years of sobriety. She had spent years in and out of prison, on and off of drugs, and went from feeling like a woman anchored in anger to feeling an immensely deep joy, an indestructible faith in herself, others, and God; she was using her mess to send a message to the world; love and joy are obtainable if you can just forgive yourself for being imperfect and extending that forgiveness to those around you. She set her heart on inspiring others, before her untimely death she was maintaining a social media platform of over 20k followers where she changed the lives of so many individuals with her commitment to her own truth. She also was a published author and she was extremely proud of that. She inspired many more with her testimony in these books, “She is Magic, Yes” and “Letters to Myself Volume 3: Addiction” and she will be appearing in an upcoming book called “Motherhood Unfiltered”. This will be in conjunction with the Extreme Excellence World Record project with a tentative release date of Mother’s Day in 2025.

Music was her love language, her solace, and her method of connecting with the world. She had a love for arts and crafts, journaling, creating scrap books, sewing blankets, the autumn season, and was an over all, extremely creative spirit. Nicole was known for living her life keeping the presence and memory of her late father - Antonio Badia (53), alive. He passed away in July of 2003 and she was never the same. In her last years of life, she had found some peace in his absence by filling her life with his essence in the form of her sisters, children, grand babies, music, staying sober, helping others, her love for her husband, and in each laugh that erupted from her. His soul was one with hers and we can all find a little peace knowing she can now, at last, be with her daddy.

A celebration of life for Nicole is still being determined and will be shared with the close friends and family of this beautiful soul soon. She will forever be remembered for her vibrant smile, her humor, her excessive use of the F word, her love of all things Scentsy, and for her extremely beautiful heart. She was so talented and finding just the right words to heal someone’s broken heart. She never wanted to see someone hurting. Any chance she got she made an effort to help someone with their recovery or whatever was happening in their life. She will truly be loved and missed by everyone she loved and by those she inspired and helped.

Cremation and funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel.
