Idaho Fish & Game is offering two hunter education classes in the Magic Valley Region. Classes will be held in Glenns Ferry and Jerome in February.

The second class is a women-only class in Jerome, at the Fish and Game Magic Valley Regional Office, 324 South 417 East, Jerome, from February 20 to 22. The class is only for girls and women aged 9 and older. The class will be taught by women instructors.
Pre-registration is required by visiting the Idaho Fish and Game website. Cost of the class is $9.75 per student.

The Idaho Transportation Department has begun upgrading traffic signals throughout the Magic Valley and Wood River Valley.
Initial work will integrate and upgrade wiring on specific signals. Replacement of signal poles, upgrading cabinets, and detection will then take place.
Wiring improvement on the signals at the intersections of SH-75 and Saddle Road, Hospital Road, and East Fork Road is ongoing and will occur at night between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m. with no flagging or lane closures until January 24. Drivers should stay aware of crews working in the areas.
Other signals slated for upgrades through the end of February include: Idaho Street and Main in Wendell, and US-26 and SH-46 in Gooding
Drivers should expect some delays while work is being done. For up-to-date information on road closures go to 511.idaho.gov
Crews will return to the three signals on SH-75 at the end of February to further upgrade cabinets and continue testing and detection. During that time, flaggers and temporary lane closures are expected to be present between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m. on weeknights barring any weather concerns.
President Trump wasted no time on his first day in office in fulfilling campaign promises. Most of the news is focused on the pardons issue for those involved in the January 6th protest. "We are ending the weaponization of government against the political adversaries, and will start addressing real problems like inflation." The President also halted over 80 executive actions issued by Biden and issued orders to prevent bureaucrats from making new regulations.
One of those executive actions included an order to stop the Lava Ridge Wind Energy Project. The executive order was written by Senator Risch in partnership with the Trump administration.
"I made a promise to Idahoans that I would not rest until the Lava Ridge Wind Project was terminated. On day one, President Donald Trump took action to keep that promise," said Risch.
"Lava Ridge has been the embodiment of liberals' disregard for the voices of Idahoans and rural America. Despite intense and widespread opposition from Idaho and the Japanese American community, the previous administration remained dead set on pushing this unwanted project across the finish line."
"At long last, the calls from Idahoans to reject Lava Ridge have been answered. Finally, our nation has a leader who recognizes that people on the ground should have a say in how our natural resources are managed."
"On behalf of the people of Idaho, I sincerely thank President Donald Trump for putting a stake through the heart of the Lava Ridge Wind Energy Project. By prioritizing this executive action on his first day in office, President Trump further cements his legacy as a leader in the revolution commonsense that governs by the people and for the people."
Senator Risch was joined by Representative Simpson in thanking the President.
"The Biden administration and the Bureau of Land Management blatantly disregarded the voices of Idahoans, the Japanese American Community, and the Magic Valley community directly impacted by the out-of-touch Lava Ridge Wind Project. In stark contrast, President Trump...

A new McDonalds restaurant opened on Highway 95 in Payette, Idaho. The interstate system propelled McDonalds in the earlier days to the super restaurant status it has become today.
As usual, the media was involved to catch everyone's attention in the opening of the new facility. I believe a lot of the grand opening promotions were geared for the adults. Personally, I wasn't there to see the grand opening. I figured I would check it out someday down the trail.
Last Friday, I was sharing a day with my granddaughter. It was kind of a grandpa/ granddaughter hang together family day. We were in the Payette area and decided McDonalds might be a lunch stop of us. I pretended to not know where it was.
A asked the granddaughter of seven-years-old, "Can you help Grandpa find the McDonalds? I don't know where to look." She said, "It's right down there. Can you see the Big 'M'?" With her guidance we were able to drive right to it.
The parking lot was a bit confusing and narrow. It reminded me of a western movie. "Circle your wagons and keep going around until everyone fits in a circle."
We both walked into McDonalds with the doors a little hard to open (could be because
the doors were new). Off to the right was the company's new traditional Kiosk. In front of me was a small counter type area. I walked over to the counter to order. No one was around or attending the counter. A clerk told me I needed to order at the Kiosk.
I walked back to the Kiosk. On the screen was a menu board and details of how you wanted you meal such as ketchup, tomato, etc. Next to it was the machine that takes the good ol' credit card and cash too. The clerk offered to help me. I guess because he realized I'm lost ordering for myself, getting my own number to place on my table, and paying for my meal through a machine.
I asked the clerk if that was a name he was assigned, "Is that how you do business here?" He told me it was. I told him, "Looks like this is my last trip here. I work for a living, I gather my pay, I pay for my services, and I expect to pay people so they can carry on their lives. Machines work for me, I don't work for machines."
The small counter I saw was to receive your food. The decor and seating arrangements looked like a jail setting. No wonder the door was hard to open... so no one can rob the Kiosk. It is truly not any kind of a family friendly McDonalds I have ever known or want to know.
This is my "Cup of Tee" no refills.
is proving what real leadership looks like by listening to the people of Idaho. I have been steadfast in my efforts to stop this project, including authoring key language in the FY25 Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act to block its final Environmental Impact Statement—a measure that passed the House last Congress. The Lava Ridge Wind Project is unwelcome and has zero place in our state. I stand fully behind President Trump's decision to end it once and for all," said Rep. Simpson.
Background:
The Lava Ridge Wind Energy Project would have built hundreds of wind turbines on nearly 100,000 acres of public land and would have visually compromised the Minidoka National Historic Site, a relocation site where more than 13,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II. The project received repeated, formal, and passionate opposition from the Idaho State Legislature, Idaho's constitutional officers, impacted county and city officials, and many in the Japanese American community.
Risch has worked closely with the incoming Trump administration to craft an executive order to terminate Lava Ridge in its entirety. The executive order fully revokes the project.

In an exciting development for education in Gooding, Gooding Middle School is beginning to partner with the High Desert College Collaborative (HDCC) to help inspire and empower its students to envision a brighter future through higher education opportunities. This new partnership marks a significant step forward in providing students from rural Idaho with the tools and resources to pursue their dreams, whether through trade, vocational, two-year, or four-year programs.
Founded in 2020, HDCC is a nonprofit organization designed to encourage students in rural Idaho counties to explore higher education options and develop aspirations for their futures. Initially serving the school districts of Bliss, Hagerman, and Wendell, HDCC has grown to include nine districts across southern Idaho, now welcoming the Gooding School District as part of its mission to reach even more students.
The goal of the partnership is to provide middle school students (grades 6-8) with early exposure to the vast opportunities available to them beyond high school. As part of this collaboration, Gooding Middle School will host a series of aspirational workshops, giving students a unique chance to meet college students and professionals, explore career possibilities, and gain practical knowledge about scholarships, college life, and post-high school educational paths.
These workshops are one of the key components of HDCC’s approach to building student aspirations. In these workshops, middle schoolers engage in conversations with current college students and professionals, asking questions about their educational paths and careers. These experiences have already had a profound impact in other districts, with students becoming more enthusiastic and proactive in their pursuit of higher education.
Gooding Middle School’s inclusion in the High Desert College Collaborative is poised to have a transformative effect on the local community. By giving students the tools to connect the dots between their current education and future goals, the partnership aims to ensure that every student has the support they need to succeed and thrive in the world beyond high school.

Patsy Ruth Ozancin McCarthy received her angel wings on January 12, 2025 and left to be with her beloved husband Bob, her parents, her son Johnny, and many other family members that she missed dearly.
She was born on June 2, 1934 in Bingham, Utah. Her parents are Louis and Ruth Ozancin. She married Robert McCarthy when she was 17 years old. They were married for 63 years before his passing. They had three children - Johnny, Kathy, and Joe.
She was raised in the mountains of Salt Lake City, Utah where her parents had a huge orchard, vegetable gardens, flower gardens, and berry patches. She worked hard helping her parents raise and pick the produce, selling, and also giving produce to those in need. With her family she skied, canned, cooked, sewed, made homemade noodles, breads, rolls, and scones all while attending college and working at the school.
She met her husband - Bob, at the Canyon Inn - a restaurant her parents owned at the mouth of the Big Cottonwood Canyon. They were married the year of 1951. While she was still in High School, he left for the Korean War. When he came home, he built them a beautiful home where they lived until moving to Gooding, Idaho in 1971, where they fulfilled their lifelong dream of owning a farm. They loved that place, their kids, their grandkids, dogs, cats, horses, horse racing, chariot racings, and their many friends and neighbors.
She always said many times; "If God told her she won the lottery and could choose any life she wanted, it would be the one she already had". She felt so grateful and blessed.
She worked at the IGA, Beacon Bean, in the harvest, and school lunch programs. She was an extremely hard worker, made huge meals every day for family, extended family and friends. She worked all day then came home and helped my dad farm sometimes on the tractor all night with him so he wouldn't get baled up. She was so amazing words cannot do her justice.
She was preceded in death by her husband – Robert; son – Johnny; her parents - Louis and Ruth; her brother – Lindy; and her sister - Donna.
She is survived by her daughter - Kathy (Kent) Benson; son - Joe McCarthy; her daughter-in-law – Timmi McCarthy; as well as grandchildren - Tammy (Robert), Shane (Tiffany), Casey (Chelsey), Kelsea (Bubba), Megan (Jon), Chad (Anna), Jake (Brigette), Morgan (Ryan), and Brandy; and great grandchildren - Trevor, Kiera, Taylor, Savanah, Emma Ruth, Avery, Ivy, Kinsley, Isabella, Clay, Amme, Cade, Aniah, Jordan, Haley, Novalee, Angel; and her sister - Roberta.
Thank you, mom for teaching us about the value of hard work, unconditional love, kindness, giving, quiet strength, and perseverance; and to God for giving us the blessing of her presence.
The family would like to offer many thanks to the staff at Hospice Visions for their loving care of our mother.
