Follow These Ten Steps for Effective Pool Maintenance

1. Run your pump. 24/7 during summer months, and 1-2 hours for every 10 degrees of temperature other times of the year.
2. Check pool chemistry. 4-5 times a week in summer, 2-3 times in cooler months.
3. Don’t allow ph to get above 8.0. At 7.0 chlorine is about 75% active, but at 8.5, it is less than 15% active.
4. Keep alkalinity between 80-140 ppm. Too low or high, alkalinity can make it more dif ficult for a sanitizer to do its job.
5. Check total dissolved solids. Twice a year and calcium hardness once a month.
6. Check and clean cells in salt water systems. If the cells are corroded or calcified they will not produce enough chlorine.
7. Clean the skimmer basket and/or lint pot in the pool pump to keep water flow and circulation.
8. Add chemicals, especially liquid chlorine, in the evening after the sun has set. You will get more out of them.
9. Brush clean the walls and tile to help eliminate algae problems and prevent plaque.

10. Keep an eye on the water level. During the hottest months, the pool may lose more water. An excessive drop in water level could be a leak.
