EDITOR’S NOTE Dear Readers, All the County Line Magazines I’ve produced over the past 25 years are full of stories that unfolded as we started researching topics.

And we’ve covered thousands of topics.

Just when I think there’s nothing more to learn about the region and the people who make it what it is, I get another surprise.

Such is the case as I dove all in to learn about Gussie Nell Davis and the legacy she leaves behind. I’ve known about her, and made more than a few mentions of the Rangerettes over the years. But it wasn’t until a couple of our creative tourism directors got together recently to form the Gussie Nell Trail, that I was drawn in completely to her story.

It’s hard to admit now that I know more, that I didn’t think about how super talented the famous drill team members are. As you’ll read in the article, they can kick so high they touch the brim of their hats with their legs. Gussie Nell famously told them after one performance to be sure to “wipe the lipstick off their legs.”

I sure can’t kick that high nor have I ever been able to do so nor do even know anyone who can! The physical skills and discipline taught by Gussie Nell and her successors to all the young women is what still

makes them the best dance drill team in the world.

Learning those skills provided a solid foundation for most of the young women who had the pleasure of participating. The lessons stick and help them make good decisions for the rest of their lives I’m told as they’ve gone on to pursue a variety of career paths.

Learn much more about Gussie Nell’s legacy in the article and plan a trip soon to explore the new trail and meet a few other strong women along the way.

The culinary getaway article was one I’ve been wanting to do for some time as I enjoy fresh food-related events like farmto-table dinners, both publicly and in my own home! This article aims to share the “bounty” with readers. So there’s another great idea for a memorable and delicious trip this summer.

I was struck by how many times different cultures came up while working on this issue. French, Natives, Mexicans, Europeans, Canadians, and more truly have influenced our lives. While honoring individual cultures, it’s also heartwarming to see the cultural blending rising to the top of many of our events and offerings in the Upper East Side of Texas.

Gussied Up

New Trail Highlights the Legacy of Gussie Nell Davis

By P.A. Geddie The birth of dance drill team performances happened first at a rural Texas high school, then on a small college football field before gaining popularity around the world. The inventor of the art form was teacher and choreographer Gussie Nell Davis who brought it to perfection.

Born in Farmersville, Texas, on November 4, 1906, Davis went to public schools there and then to the Texas Woman’s University (formerly the College of Industrial Arts) in Denton with the intention to become a concert pianist. While there, her interest in dancing led to switching her studies to physical education. During her first year in Greenville, the pep-squad, known as the Flaming Flashes, did stunts and a little marching. With her experience in music, dance, and physical education, under her direction over the next 10 years, the team’s activities evolved and became more elaborate.

Wooden batons were added when Davis commissioned the school’s nearest furniture maker to make them, then finally drums and bugles were added.

The Flaming Flashes were the first twirl-and-dance group to perform at football games. Word spread across the state about their talents and their leader Gussie Nell Davis.

During this time, Davis continued her education, receiving a master’s degree in science from the University of Southern California in 1938.

When Kilgore College president Dean B.E. Masters heard about the small town “Brilliant Drill Team” making big headlines, he hired Davis in 1939 to form a group to keep football spectators in their seats during halftime, rather than brawling under the stands with game rivals.

Masters had an additional goal of increasing the college’s female enrollment.

The group, called the Kilgore College Rangerettes, first performed in September 1940, and were the first all-girls dance drill team in the United States to perform during the halftime periods of college football games.

A disciplinarian, Davis built the Rangerettes into a self-confident squad. She directed routines that were more athletic and aerobic, and the squad was featured extensively in the press as they performed at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, presidents’ inaugurations, parades, and special events around the world. continued page 10

GUSSIE continued from page 9 The Rangerettes were featured in numerous publications dating back to 1950 including Esquire, Look, Saturday Evening Post, Life, Southern Living, Sports Illustrated, Texas Highways, and Newsweek. They appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show and 60 Minutes and were in movies including Seven Wonders of the World in 1956.

Over the years the Rangerettes organization received complaints for a lack of diversity and emphasis on physical attractiveness with some calling them a troupe of sexist and mindless “Barbie Dolls.”

Davis is said to have reminded the accusers that learning self-confidence, discipline, cooperation, and the ability to perform precision dance are great accomplishments. She argued that halftime and special event performances by the Rangerettes gave young women a chance to experience achievements and acclaim, previously open only to male athletes.

The Rangerettes are featured in Women, a book of famous photographs by Annie Leibovitz published in 1999, with essays by author Susan Sontag. They stand among other strong women — an astronaut, two Supreme Court justices, farmers, movie stars, reporters, a surgeon, the First Lady of the United States, businesswomen, and many others who make up the ensemble of “what women are now

— as different, as varied, as heroic, as forlorn, as conventional, as unconventional as this.”

Leibovitz told a reporter how impressed she was with the strong physical abilities of the young women, skilled enough to kick their legs so high to touch the brim of their hats.

“As soon as they did their kick,” Leibovitz said, “the drill captain said, ‘Okay, wipe the lipstick off your legs.’ It was such an extreme kick. It was pretty amazing.”

The enormity of the team’s skills over the decades far outweighed the minor controversies, even as their skirts got a little shorter as societal styles changed.

In photographer O. Rufus Lovett’s book, Kilgore Rangerettes, released in 2008, Texas Monthly senior editor Katy Vine says in the introduction: “Now, about the skirts. They know. Despite the cheesecake appeal, however, men aren’t the ideal audience for the Rangerettes. The most appreciative audience is that tough group of critics: those who have worn the boots, the hat, the skirt. They may have become accountants, physicians’ assistants, schoolteachers, attorneys. They may have become Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders or drill team instructors, spreading the word about the Rangerettes like missionaries so that girls can grow up not able

to remember a time when they didn’t know about the organization. Most former members say that being part of the Rangerettes was the best experience of their lives.”

Likewise, Davis told the press she welcomed qualified young women of all races. Race was not an issue for her she said, only that all applicants qualified on skills and technique. Freddie Goosby Evans became the first woman of African descent to join the Rangerettes in 1973, and others followed, some becoming officers. In 2020, Tai’Shea Butler-Hyde of the 67th line of Rangerettes paid tribute to Evans, stating, “Thank you for being the first and paving the way for so many other African American girls like myself to experience two of the best years of our lives. You gave us hope and allowed us to see ourselves in the beauty that is the Red, White, and Blue.”

The Rangerettes staff state they continue to embrace inclusivity with tryouts attracting a wide range of talent and backgrounds.

After 40 years directing the Rangerettes to much success, Davis retired in 1979.

She remained the group’s godmother until her death from respiratory complications on December 21, 1993, at the age of 87. She is buried in the Farmersville Cemetery. continued page 13

Davis chose not to marry or have children of her own. Her legacy is the Rangerettes and the movement she started with her combination of dance moves and precision drills forming the origin of dance drill teams. The Rangerettes are still considered the best, with the highest kicks in the world.

Thousands of high schools and colleges have copied the Rangerettes since Davis created and brought the art form of dance drill team to perfection. The Apache Belles at nearby Tyler Junior College came along in 1947 followed by many others.

In 1958, Davis co-founded the American Dance Drill Team Schools, providing instruction for America’s drill teams.

Davis was honored with Gussie Nell Day in Kilgore in 1964 and in Farmersville six years later. It was followed up with a Texas statewide celebration in 1979.

She was named the 1969 Texas Woman of the Year by the Texas State Civitans.

Davis was named an honorary citizen of Fort Worth and received a State of Texas House of Representatives Certificate of Citation. She was inducted into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame in 1989. In 2006, a former Rangerette, Kathryn Heller Zwick and her husband Nick, donated $3.5 million to help Kilgore College build the Gussie Nell Davis Residence Hall — a testament to the legacy of young women whose lives Davis touched and helped prepare for life beyond college.

In 1975 the Houston Contemporary Museum of Art honored Davis for creating a “living form” of art.

In 1999 she became an inductee of the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame, recognized for her exceptional contributions to collegiate drill teams. The Rangerettes have performed in 75 Cotton Bowl games as of January 2025. Davis’ pioneering work in developing precision performance standards left a lasting legacy in collegiate sports and pageantry.

Her induction into the Hall of Fame underscores the significant impact she had on the cultural and athletic traditions around the world.

THE GUSSIE NELL TRAIL

Efforts to honor the woman who brought show business to the football field continue especially across the region where she grew up and positively influenced thousands of young women.

Tourism directors Megan Payne (Kilgore) and Stacy Foley (Greenville) have created the Gussie Nell Trail across Northeast Texas to continue the celebration of her life. With stories of her humble beginnings in rural Farmersville, finding her footing in Greenville, and kicking into high gear in Kilgore, they hope to help women and others catch a bit of the Gussie Nell spirit as they tour the region.

As a former high school drill team member herself, Payne says she’s honored to tell people the Gussie Nell Davis story.

“Gussie Nell is someone I’ve never met and will never meet but she feels like a person I know. She changed young girls lives,” she says. “She changed Texas high school culture with her halftime impact.

In Texas, in the United States, every dance drill team, it started with her.

“She influenced so many people, teaching discipline and how to be a representation of your organization, to be a leader. Being on the drill team helps you learn many lessons to prepare you for life. She set the foundation with those experiences that are valued and passed down. I remembered those lessons when I started my first job and many days since then. Most of all she taught to put your best foot forward.”

Farmersville

The Gussie Nell Trail starts in Farmersville where Davis’ life began, where she is buried, and where she was inspired from humble beginnings to find great success.

On May 17, a new state historical marker is being unveiled with great fanfare.

Guests and dignitaries from Kilgore, Greenville, and all over the region are joining Farmersville leaders and citizens along with some of the Rangerettes and directors, the Flaming Flashes, drill team alumni, and the Farmerettes High School Drill Team.

Visitors to Northeast Texas interested in experiencing a Gussie Nell Davis adventure anytime throughout the year are invited to see the marker in Farmersville and her grave at the Farmersville Cemetery and get to know her through the eyes of her hometown.

Known as the “Onion Capital of North Texas,” guests may visit the Farmersville Heritage Museum located in the Historic Onion Shed built around 1920. Some memorabilia is there on Davis, as well as their other hometown hero, Audie Murphy, and numerous other exhibits depict the history of the area. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month.

The Bain-Honaker House Museum owned by Farmersville Historical Society also has memorabilia about Gussie Nell Davis. Built in 1865, it celebrates its 160th anniversary this year as the home where Anna Melissa Hicks Bain raised her five daughters. An astute businesswoman, Bain earned a good living through real estate investments and ran a room and board at her home. It is open the first Saturday of each month as well as for pre-arranged tours by appointment and special events.

Also taking place the first Saturday of the month is the Farmersville Market, a combination farmers market and flea market at the historic Onion Shed.

Antique stores and other shopping opportunities are in downtown Farmersville and the city is home to Wood and Time Smokehouse & Bar, a local and regional favorite eatery on Candy Street open Wednesday through Sunday.

Farmersville is also the home to the head of the Northeast Texas Trail that goes 130 miles east across the region. It is the longest hiking, biking, and equestrian trail in Texas and the fourth-longest in the United States. Following an old railway corridor, it begins near the Historic Onion Shed and ends in New Boston, about 24 miles west of Texarkana.

Greenville

From Famersville, the Gussie Nell Trail makes its way 13 scenic miles across Highway 380 to Greenville. Visitors learn more about Gussie Nell’s time there with the Flaming Flashes at the Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum along with other Hunt County history and can drive down Gussie Nell Davis Drive.

A must see in Greenville, too, is the colorful mural featuring a life-size cutout of Gussie Nell Davis, providing fun and meaningful photo opportunities. “Spectrum,” by artist Cathy Smithey, is located at Washington and Johnson streets. A plaque tells a bit about Gussie and the tour literature states: “Many of the world’s most famous highkicking dance lines — from the Rockettes in New York City to the Kilgore College Rangerettes to the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders — have been influenced by the pioneering work done here in Greenville. Featured on “Spectrum” is Gussie Nell Davis, who popularized the highkicking dance style and unique uniforms for the Greenville High School Flaming Flashes before spreading her influence to Kilgore and around the world.”

There are a couple of historical markers in Greenville that depict the stories of other strong, influential women including those of Mary Jim Morris who helped lead the way in education for children of African descent and Lallie P. Carlisle who was the first woman in Texas to hold an elective public office. Her gravesite in East Mount Cemetery is sometimes covered with “I Voted” stickers.

Greenville offers many great options for other things to do, places to stay, eateries, the award-winning Landon Winery, Splash Kingdom Water Park, and special events on an ongoing basis.

An active seasonal farmers’ market keeps local produce at center stage. Annual events include jamborees, a county fair, parades, bike rides, the Bob Wills Fiddle Festival and Contest, and the Hunt County Festival of the Arts.

Area attractions cater to families and adults with interests in the arts, nature, heritage, and getaways. Greenville has a variety of overnight accommodations, including hotels, bed and breakfasts, and

Driving straight to Kilgore from Greenville is about 100 miles and less than two hours. There are numerous places along the way — as well as nearby detours — worthy of a stop. Travelers are sure to enjoy the beautiful scenic views as they move along any road going southeast across the Upper East Side of Texas.

Sulphur Springs/Winnsboro Route Taking a rest stop in Sulphur Springs to the east of Greenville is a great adventure on its own. Tour buses sometimes go 50 miles out of their way to use the amusing see-through bathrooms sitting out in the open on the town square plaza.

The park-like setting is an inviting space with a world-class veterans memorial park, giant checkers and chess games, and a splash pad, all with the backdrop of the showpiece Romanesque Revival courthouse. Surrounding the square are numerous restaurants, boutique shops, and delicious homemade ice cream.

Sulphur Springs is home to New York Times best-selling author Colleen Hoover who is occasionally seen about town or at the movie theatre catching one of her latest stories retold in film.

From Sulphur Springs, taking Highway 11 south, travelers find small town Winnsboro with its focus on the arts and history that garners it a seat at the table with much larger towns as an official Texas Cultural District. With a very active art center anchoring the community, guests find creativity at every turn. Live music, community theater performances, poetry readings, artist demonstrations, and art exhibits, take place regularly.

GUSSIE continued from page 14 From Winnsboro, travelers may want to take a backroads scenic drive to Kilgore through Gilmer, the home of East Texas Jamboree; and Gladewater, the Antique Capital of East Texas.

Eagle Country Route Travelers heading south on 69 out of Greenville end up in Rains County, the Eagle Capital of Texas, and the town of Emory between Lake Tawakoni and Lake Fork, both great choices for a side trip for birdwatching and photography, boating, or other water sports.

Going further south, some may want to loop in Canton, especially during a First Monday Trade Days weekend, the world’s largest flea market. For interstate drivers, Canton is a straight shot east on I-20 to the Kilgore exit.

A more rural route from Emory takes Highway 69 over to Mineola where travelers find a quaint small town built on railroad history. Several restaurants and shops are well worth a stop, and given an extra day in the trip itinerary, taking the Amtrak train to Longview is an added bonus.

Mineola’s history museum and historical markers offer a plethora of stories including those of school teacher Sarah Rosalie Patten Buchanan who became a full professor and Dean of Women at Sam Houston State Normal College in Huntsville; Ima Hogg, who devoted her life to the arts, historic preservation, and philanthropy; and Addie E. McFarland, an early educator for children of African ancestry and others.

From Mineola, travelers can take the rural route along Highway 80 going through Hawkins, Big Sandy, and Gladewater before heading south to Kilgore, or take Highway 69 south through Lindale to Interstate 20. Lindale is the hometown of country superstar Miranda Lambert.

It is all part of the plan to make sure visitors discover genuine Southern hospitality in Kilgore.

A visit to Tyler, the Rose Capital of America is always a good idea. In the spirit of historic strong women of Northeast Texas, learn about veteran White House reporter Sara McClendon in the historic McClendon House where she was born on the corner of South Vine and West Houston Streets.

Kilgore

No where is Davis honored more than in Kilgore. There’s a commemorative brick in her honor at the World’s Richest Acre park. Street signs are adorned with the Rangerettes images on them.

Restaurants feature their photographs and uniforms.

The Kilgore College campus is home to The Rangerette Showcase and Museum featuring a display of props and costumes and thousands of photographs and newspaper clippings. A 60-seat theatre shows performances and a documentary.

The lounge area pays tribute to Davis with her personal mementos collected over 40 years. The museum is located on the campus in the Physical Education Complex. They are open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays, and for group tours by appointment.

While they may have started on halftime football fields, the Rangerettes appear in many stage shows each year. Each spring, they present their own variety show called Rangerette Revels featuring all genres of dance including tap, jazz, modern, and musical theatre. The grand finale presents the Rangerettes in a show shopping high kick production known as the Rangerette Extravaganza. They also do an annual Christmas show and continue to perform at special events for audiences around the world.

The Rangerettes often perform for Kilgore College events. Check their calendar to see when they are scheduled.

Kilgore — known as The City of Stars — has ongoing live music and other entertainment going on throughout the year. See ‘Rangerettes’ Exhibit at Kilgore Old Post Office A collaboration between the City of Kilgore, the Longview Museum of Fine Arts, and REEL East Texas presents Rangerettes, an exhibition of photographs

by O. Rufus Lovett on display through February 2026 at The Old Post Office event center in Kilgore. The 31 Kilgore Rangerettes images were taken by Lovett over a 34 year period from 1989 to 2023.

The exhibition is part of the Rangerettes celebration of their 85th anniversary this year.

Lovett also has a coffee table book of his photos that released in 2008 simply titled Kilgore Rangerettes. The collections capture the essence of the world’s most famous dance drill team, bringing their iconic spirit and history to life.

Two of the photos are presented here.

“Triplets,” shows Cali, Hayley, and Hillary, the first triplets to be Kilgore Rangerettes. Lovett shot the photo in 2004 at the World’s Richest Acre in Kilgore. It

Geddie Those who live in rural Upper East Side of Texas know they are rich for having easy access to the freshest, most delicious foods available from a vast amount of nearby farms that surround each community. There’s a huge difference in taste and nutrition from produce that comes from local sources instead of warehouse storage and 18-wheeler trucks hauling them across the country. Locals know that well, and it is a motivating factor in traveling for culinary tourists.

Experiencing the serenity of authentic rural life and the dynamic relationships among people, food, and nature makes for a fun and meaningful getaway in the Upper East Side of Texas.

Below are several active communities where visitors enjoy culinary getaways.

Lodging choices include unique AirBnBs, boutique hotels, lakeside cabins, farm stays, tiny home parks, and RV and camping sites.

An itinerary might include arriving on a Friday with a stroll through town and dinner at a nice eatery. With easy access to local ingredients, visitors can assume restaurants — including food trucks — utilize those sources. Menus often make note of it, and it’s always a good idea to ask.

Greenville has a rich agricultural history, especially in cotton. The Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum exhibits the days of a bygone era when cotton was a part of everyday life in Hunt County.

Greenville was home to the world’s largest inland cotton compress, which set a world record both in 1911 and 1912. In just one 10-hour workday it could compress 2,073 bales of cotton. The engine of the compress is on display at the museum among other memorabilia and educational materials.

At top, wavy bands of blue indicate the many millions of years this area was underwater. White and bright yellow-green hues respectively represent salt and sulfur deposits that are abundant in local soil. Below, a multicolor rectilinear motif pays homage to Native inhabitants who cultivated the land. And the color transition from vibrant blue to deep red-brown symbolizes water seeping into enriched earth. In contrast to the colorful geometric layers above, colorless cotton whimsically emerges from black land soil.

Music at the Market takes place on Friday nights at 8 p.m. in June and July with a free concert. Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs, grab a bite from local vendors and enjoy featured performances under the big Texas sky. Check their calendar for specific dates and entertainers.

For wine lovers, a visit to Landon Winery in downtown Greenville is a treat.

LONGVIEW

The Historic Longview Farmers’ Market takes place at the intersection of Cotton and High Streets. A nearby historic marker tells the story of Kelly Plow Company which made plows and other implements, tools, and machines used in agriculture. The marker notes that Kelly Plow Works is reported to be the second oldest chartered industry in Texas and was the only full-line plow factory in the Southwest, with its beginning in 1843.

The thriving Historic Longview Farmers Market is a project of a group called Preservation Longview. Market days include vendors selling mushrooms spinach, honey, breads, cookies, pasteurized meats, Indian and Mediterranean foods, and much more. They feature live music, artist demonstrations, and home and gift items including flower bouquets, pottery, jewelry, and apothecary items.

Outdoor adventurers enjoy exploring local trails, parks, lakes, and golf courses and thrill-seeking off-road, zip lining, hot air balloon rides, and skydiving.

The Arts!Longview Cultural District resonates with those who love the arts, history, and culture in a walkable area of downtown Longview. A fine arts museum with exhibits throughout the year, a children’s theater, sculpture garden, two parks, historic train depot, historical museum, and library are all within

a few blocks. The district is home to the Longview Symphony and a kids’ handson discovery center.

The cultural district also stretches south to LeTourneau University, which features the Glaske Sculpture, the R.G. LeTourneau Museum, and the Belcher Center with a stage filled throughout the year with concerts, variety shows, speakers, ballet, and symphonies.

Beautiful murals by local artists keep the creative vibe present throughout the district and often serve as backdrops to special events.

Fine art is complemented by fine food, craft beer, and artisan coffee. Special events take place throughout the year, including regular art walks and festivals, and frequent live acoustic music and concerts. Visitors find an arboretum and nature trails nearby and much more to explore in Longview.

The Shelton Gin in Old Town Palestine, originally a bustling cotton gin for the town since the 1840s, it also served as a trading post and grist mill over the years. Today, it is a venue for live music.

It sits next to the popular Pint and Barrel Drafthouse serving craft beer, wine, and good pub food. Across the street is Oxbow Bakery, winning nationwide raves for their pies. Also in Old Town is a coffee and juice bar next to Wells Creek Crossing, a unique shopping experience.

The Palestine Farmers’ Market is centrally located and produce is available most of the year. It recently underwent some big renovations. Agriculture and arts have joined together as the Dogwood Arts Council began holding its annual art show in the market pavilions this year.

The market is enjoyed by residents and visitors alike who connect and ask questions about growing crops while local farmers sell their wares, and crafters develop new businesses. Everything sold at the market is grown within 100 miles of Palestine, and the weekends during the market season are often packed with live music and other activities, food trucks, and opportunities for community involvement.

The second largest Paris in the world has had a farmers market since the early 1900s. It was originally located on the downtown square. In 1926, a local philanthropist wanted to celebrate the accomplishments of the citizens in rebuilding the town after a severe fire so his family gave a beautiful gift of an Italianate marble fountain, which remains at the heart of the downtown. This displaced the farmers market, so the city officials dedicated the 400 block of First Street South West as the Market Square where it has been located ever since.

The Paris Farmers & Artisan Market offers a variety of items including specialty breads, locally roasted coffee, fresh produce, fresh eggs, goat cheese, pottery, firewood, and Texas wine.

The market is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Saturdays from May through October.

Other things to do while in Paris include visiting the “Texanized” sixty-five-foot Eiffel Tower replica, topped off by a red cowboy hat with a ten-foot brim and four-foot crown. It is a great photo opportunity, as are several creative downtown murals and “ghost signs” from the past.

Taking a walk or bicycle ride along the Trail de Paris is a favorite activity. It is

part of the 130 mile Northeast Texas Trail running through 19 towns and seven counties. The trail goes through a 90-acre wooded area in Paris and beyond with sites featuring unique bridges, creeks, rippling water, huge sugarberry and other varieties of trees, crape myrtles, honeysuckle, fireflies, underpass art, wildflowers, and pastoral scenes.

Walkers on the trail enjoy picking up a meal from a local restaurant or buying picnic ingredients from the local farmers’ market and finding a perfect spot to enjoy the day.

There is no shortage of good dining opportunities in Paris, both downtown and on the loop that circles the city. Texan Parisian dining offers outdoor patio and indoor seating with a variety of culinary choices, including comfort foods like chicken-fried steak and bread pudding, plus steaks, gourmet tamales, street corn, Italian gelato, buffalo wings, and waffles on a stick. An artisan bakery sells European-style breads and pastries. Many locations offer craft beer and wine. Paris has an eclectic list of eateries including a French-themed wine bar and creperie.

A free concert series, 903 Sunsets, takes place every Thursday in June with Aaron Watson, Wayne Toups, Deana Carter, and Even It Up performing at the downtown fountain. A beer garden and food trucks are onsite and guests are encouraged to visit shops and restaurants and bring chairs to the grounds to enjoy the music.

Other things to do in Paris include visits to the Red River Valley Veterans Memorial, Lamar County Historical Museum, the Sam Bell Maxey House State Historic Site, and the Valley of the Caddo Museum & Cultural Center. Several parks and lakes adorn the Paris landscape.

Lake Gibbons is a refuge for geese. Lake Crook is perfect for fishing, boating, and picnics. Pat Mayse Lake is used for recreation and is the entrance for the Barber Hills Bike Trail.

The Rockwall Farmers Market takes place from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday from May through September on the downtown square. The market has grown to more than 45 vendors each season. It is a popular destinations to purchase fresh produce and specialty foods such as grass-fed meats, fresh baked artisan pastries, seafood, honey, jams, pasta, and tamales to name just a few. They also feature local talent that provides live music at each of the markets and they are pet friendly.

It is easy to find a variety of tasty cuisine in and around Rockwall, including home-style food, wood-fired pizza, street tacos, fresh seafood, upscale burgers, juicy steaks, local wines, and craft brews.

VineCrafters vineyard and winery is open 4-8 p.m. every Saturday with fine Texas wines and ales and special events including wine and food pairings.

Two downtown venues are well known for their locally-sourced offerings. The Book Club Cafe, 107 E. Kaufman Street on the north side of the square, uses local eggs from Vital Farms, milk from Mill King, beef from Chisholm Trail, chicken from Windy Meadows, jam from JJ&B Jams, honey from Sabine Creek, tea

from Sterling Tea. Their sausage is made using their exclusive recipe from a local butcher. They also roast all of their coffee on site and bake all of their breads from their own 10-year-old sourdough starter. They scratch make on site all of their pastries, biscuits, gravies, and sauces as well as all of the syrups they use for their coffees.

The Book Club Cafe sells their jam, honey, and teas, plus coffee by the pound.

The Downing Bottles & Bites located on the San Jacinto Plaza downtown, offers locally grown produce on their seasonal menu. Their beef comes from Ranch Hand Beef and mushrooms from Millbrook Mushrooms. They offer local beers as well, including, but not limited to: Manhattan Project, Montucky Cold Snack, Bishop Cidery, Rahr & Sons, Hop and Sting, and Union Bear Brewing.

A village in its own right, The Harbor Rockwall is a favorite destination for those who enjoy parking the car and spending a day or a weekend on an adventure against the backdrop of beautiful Lake Ray Hubbard.

Sulphur Springs Celebration Market is a bit different than most of the markets in the region. First of all, it’s in the evening. Their focus to eat local is front and center with producers selling honey, yard plants, fruits and vegetables. Other vendors present baked goods, outdoor and indoor decor, handmade body care, and original art. The markets are from 6 to 10 p.m. starting May 17 and go this year through September 20.

The pedestrian-friendly district and revitalized downtown offer a unique ambiance with special events and numerous activities taking place adjacent to the market each week.

The award-winning Romanesque Revival courthouse is the showpiece and inspiration for the lively Celebration Plaza at the heart of the community. Visitors wander about the inviting, park-like grounds, play giant checkers and chess games, enjoy the laughter of kids danc-

ing with water, experience the inspiring veterans memorial, and line up to use the amusing see-through bathrooms.

American and international flavors and beverages are all in a short walking distance. Guests find culinary adventures in upscale restaurants with cozy tables, Texas barbecue joints, hometown country cafes, and on pleasant outdoor patios.

A variety of cuisine choices include steaks, shrimp, and fish, German bratwurst fresh off the grill, pizza direct from a wood-fired oven, gourmet sandwiches and burgers, stuffed baked potatoes, and a wide selection of craft beer and wine.

Built in 1908, the Winnsboro Depot Center at the corner of Main and Broadway Streets reminds guests of the town’s rich railroad history. Fully restored, it houses offices and meeting rooms for area organizations and the Winnsboro Historical Museum. As the railroad made its way to Winnsboro in the late 1800s, it became a shipping center for timber and agricultural commodities.

Celebrating Audie Murphy’s 100th Birthday Events Take Place in Farmersville and Greenville for the War Hero and Hollywood Legend Audie Murphy was the most decorated combat soldier of World War II, earning the Medal of Honor at just 19 years old.

After the war, he starred in Hollywood movies.

He was born June 20, 1925, in the tiny Kingston community located 10 miles north of Greenville on U.S. Highway 69 in Hunt County. He grew up in Farmersville, Greenville, and Celeste.

Murphy died in a plane crash on May 28, 1971. He was buried with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.

In attendance were Ambassador to the U.N. George H. W. Bush, Army Chief of Staff William Westmoreland, and many of the 3rd Infantry Division. A special flagstone walkway was constructed eventually to accommodate the large number of people who visit to pay their respects.

It is the cemetery’s second most-visited gravesite, after that of President John F. Kennedy.

On June 21 activities are taking place in both Greenville and Farmersville to celebrate Murphy’s 100 Birthday.

Farmersville’s Audie Murphy Day activities start the day before with visits to the Farmersville Heritage Museum and a viewing of a French documentary, Audie Murphy: From Colmar to Hollywood. Saturday morning features a parade and other activities that include more than 200 veterans, a brass band, and representatives from the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club. Guests are invited to see the Audie Murphy exhibition at the museum which includes the July 1945 of Life Magazine featuring Murphy on the cover and an entire spread of his homecoming from the war in Farmersville that year. Events for Audie Murphy’s 100th Birthday in Greenville take place on the evening of June 21. A Murphy tribute performer, Duffy Hudson, does a 45 minute show and refreshments are available.

Also, taking place in Greenville to honor Audie Murphy and other military

heroes, the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum in Greenville is holding their annual Audie Murphy Day on May 17. Featured speakers include Seth Paridon, host of the popular podcast The Unauthorized History of the Pacific War, Terrance Furgerson, author of The Dallas Story: The North American Aviation Plant and the Industrial Mobilization during WWII, and a zoom Q&A with actor Kent McCord, who knew Audie Murphy and is best known for his role in Adam-12. Some events take place at the Saturday morning’s events will be held at the Fletcher Warren Civic Center, 5501 Business Hwy 69 South and others are at the museum located at 600 Interstate Highway 30 with a small admission fee.

Vive Le Bois d’Arc Bonham Honors the Boi d’Arc Tree Amid Heritage Day Festivities

The City of Bonham is celebrating bois d’arc trees as part of the Bonham Heritage Day Festival at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3 at the Fannin County Courthouse, 101 East Sam Rayburn Drive.

The Bonham and Fannin County connection with bois d’arc wood begins in the 1700s when the French explorers came across the Caddo Indians in Northeast Texas. The French soon realized that the local Natives had a flourishing business trading what the Caddo called “wood of the arc” or “bow wood” with other tribes from a wide area. The French translation of this impenetrable, highly sought after wood is bois d’arc.

The Caddo were instrumental in teaching the French how to use wood from the bois d’arc tree.

This gave way to settlements and stability in an otherwise unforgiving land.

The phrase bois d’arc was passed down to European settlers who named their territory the Village of Bois d’Arc located on Bois d’Arc Creek. This village was renamed Bonham in 1840, would be our city’s name until it was renamed Bonham in 1840, after the fallen Alamo war soldier James Butler Bonham.

More than 180 years later, the name bois d’arc was requested to honor important local history and recognize the bois d’arc tree as a distinctive symbol with special significance for the region. The citizens and officials of Bonham and Fannin County fought to change the name of Texas’ newest reservoir, located in Fannin County, from The North Texas Municipal Lake to the Bois d’Arc Lake. The U.S. Department of the Interior officially recognized the name Bois d’Arc Lake on February 21, 2022, and it is open to the public for boating and fishing, and has three picnic areas with restrooms.

Representatives of the Caddo Nation and the French Consulate will be in attendance and presented special pens made of bois d’arc by David Keene. The

hardy tree is also known as Osage orange.

Keene has presented local and state officials with the pens for many years. From swearing in ceremonies to official state visits, the pens are synonymous with public duty and pride representing Bonham’s past, present and future.

Also on May 3 is the Red River Arts Festival at the Creative Arts Center, 200 West Fifth in Bonham. Local artists are selling their works and making demonstrations. They’ll have live music in the garden, food trucks, beer and wine.

The public and guests are invited to the planting of a special bois d’arc tree on the grounds of the historic Fannin County Courthouse at 11:00 a.m. hosted by the Bonham Area Chamber of Commerce.

Balloons and Music Fill the Air in Longview Country music’s Joe Nichols is headlining the main entertainment stage this year for the Great Texas Balloon Race that starts with balloon flyovers across the Longview sky on Tuesday, June 10, and culminates with weekend concerts, Texas-themed drone shows, and activities through Sunday morning, June 15 at the Longview Convention Complex.

Nichols takes the stage Saturday, June 14 with Sheila and the Caddo Kats opening.

New Orleans band Bag Of Donuts , a “Superpop” party band, headlines Friday, June 13 with Untold Story opening.

Nichols has a sound that blurs the boundaries between country music’s past and present that has earned him more than two billion cumulative audio streams/ views and a half-dozen No. 1 singles with 10 Top 10 hits. Josh Turner Headlines at Rockwall Founders Day Celebration Rockwall Founders Day celebrates the town’s 171 birthday on Saturday, May 17. The free festival takes place both in downtown Rockwall and at Harry Myers Park, with a robust lineup of family programming that begins at 8 a.m. downtown and culminates that evening with high-energy performances by Will Jones, William Beckmann and headliner Josh Turner in the park.

A trolley will shuttle festival goers between downtown and Harry Myers Park from 12:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Festivities begin with the Rockwall Farmers Market, which takes place on the downtown square from 8 a.m. to noon.

The farmers market has become a popular destination for locals to purchase fresh produce and specialty foods such as grass-fed meats, fresh-baked artisan pastries, seafood, honey, jams, pasta and tamales – plus, there’s live music.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., join Rockwall Art League for a Founders Day pop-up exhibit and sale downtown in San Jacinto Plaza. The pop-up features fresh new works from 15 local artists in a variety of media, plus plein air demonstrations and hands-on art activities for all ages.

From noon to 4 p.m., a wine walk takes place in downtown Rockwall, sponsored

by Downtown Rockwall Association.

Guests purchase wine glasses at San Jacinto Plaza, then go from shop to shop across downtown sipping samples from each merchant. Proceeds benefit the Downtown Rockwall Association.

Founders Day continues at Harry Myers Park starting at 1 p.m. with fun for the whole family. Expect bounce houses, a rock-climbing wall, a ninja course and a food truck court. A vendor market keeps shoppers entertained until 5 p.m.

Throughout the event, live animal shows introduce exciting creatures to festival goers. A DJ spins tunes all day, keeping the festival energy going.

Two up-and-coming country acts open the stage at Harry Myers Park to warm up the crowd. Kicking off things at 5:30 p.m. is Will Jones, whose sound is rooted in the country and bluegrass music that he grew up listening to in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Jones draws inspiration from greats including Keith Whitley and Tony Rice.

At 6:30 p.m., William Beckmann takes over. Hailing from Del Rio, Texas, a small border town, the singer-songwriter is influenced by classic country and the mariachi and Norteño sounds of northern Mexico.

Headliner Josh Turner takes the stage at 8 p.m. Known for songs like “Long Black Train” and “Why Don’t We Just Dance,” Turner’s global reach includes nearly six billion streams. Turner’s five No. 1 singles also include “Your Man,” for which the official music video has 226 million views. Turner released his first “Greatest Hits” album in 2023, which features 11 of his biggest songs from seven studio albums.

Bachers Exhibit Features Creativity of Father and Son

By P.A. Geddie Winnsboro Center for the Arts presents works by the late Gary Bachers and his son Christopher Bachers from May 21 through July 19 with an artist reception on May 29.

The show is a memorial exhibition of Gary Bachers’ art. He passed away in August of 2023. His colorful handdrawn images were a staple at art festivals and are displayed in galleries and homes around the country.

His wife and business partner Gabrielle — a talented fiber artist — continues to share his art at shows and worked diligently since his death organizing and preparing his life’s work for exhibitions to continue sharing his inspiring story.

Gary and Gabrielle moved to New Boston, Texas, west of Texarkana, after he graduated from medical school at the University of Manitoba in his hometown of Winnipeg, Canada. For 10 years he served the rural community as a family practice physician. His career was cut short when at the age of 38 he suffered a debilitating stroke, leaving him with right-sided paralysis and global expressive aphasia, which prevented him from speaking or writing.

As part of his stroke-recovery therapy, Gary had to learn to hold a pencil in his left hand. Frustratingly, he could

not form words with the pencil, but he started sketching flowers from Gabrielle’s garden. With colored pencils he began perfecting his compositions of lilies, peonies, irises, and birds of paradise. He developed his own language of design as his art evolved from simple monotone sketches to meticulous and brilliantly colorful composition. Mandalas, human figures, insects, and architecture feature in many of the works, but the full moon is the most pervasive element in his artistic lexicon, as if to mark not only the brief moment of spectacular beauty but also each composition’s place in the cosmos.

“People always say we’re a creative family,” Christopher says. “Not only my dad and I, but my mother, brother, and sister are all artists in their own areas. Looking back, it’s clear that we were all inspired

by Dad. We lived alongside his daily art practice, watching his compositions and second career steadily develop over the years. It’s a small example of how art can make meaning and transform lives.”

Gary and Gabrielle’s son and the oldest of three siblings, Christopher Bachers, grew up surrounded by his father’s art and was exposed to the art world from a young age. Christopher pursued a career in English and American literature, but began painting as a hobby during his graduate studies. He has developed his own unique style, combining vivid colors and abstract lines to create enigmatic compositions that explore themes of communication and self-expression.

“He left an incredible gift of art behind and it is sad to accept that there will be no more. I am so privileged to have walked this journey by his side. He inspired so many people along the way and I want to continue that by sharing this show.”

Christopher has won several awards for his art and has participated in various exhibitions, including the same national show in Texarkana where his father started his career.

Gabrielle and Christopher are carrying on the family’s legacy of creativity.

Gathering Gary’s body of work is an honor, Gabrielle says, and especially heartwarming that it is a father and son exhibition.

Art House Trinidad Inspires Creative Passion

By P.A. Geddie Mike and Stacey Farmer own Art House Trinidad in Trinidad, Texas, on Cedar Creek Lake. They have a working studio and gift shop and hold classes and art shows. Some of their specialties are glassblowing, metal working, and mixed media art. They enjoy helping others find their creative side and regularly exhibit art by other local artists.

“We believe all people have creativity within, and love seeing people with no art experience discover what is possible,” Mike says.

He found his love for glassblowing in 2010 by taking lessons from a Dallas artist and decided to make his own equipment. That led to welding and metal working as well.

With careers in electrical engineering and professional counseling, the couple moved from Dallas to Trinidad during

the COVID years and opened Art House Trinidad on March 4, 2023.

Spring Bling is their current art exhibition which runs through June 21. Texas Twang is the next show scheduled to run from June 27 through October 25 with an artist reception on June 28.

Upcoming workshops include Fused Glass Heart and Up-Cycled Cigar Box Purse. They welcome groups for tours and demonstrations.

Mike enjoys working with industrial trades like glass blowing, artisan metal fire pit fabricating, and woodworking as well as modern ventures such as 3D printing, laser engraving and CNC routing.

“He truly is Renaissance Man,” Stacy says, “as he loves making art using Old World techniques like glass blowing and welding.”

“I am his assistant to make tumblers and vases as it's a two-person job.”

Stacy does her own art too, creating such pieces as large glass discs that she makes using recycled pipe breakoffs from Mike’s glass blowing. She fuses them together with dichroic glass on top.

“I greatly enjoy repurposing things so I slump a lot of wine bottles used as charcuterie boards and dip/deli trays, do assemblages, and have recently started making the kiln castings out of recycled glass blowing pipe breakoffs.”

Between The Void, The Vine, and The Veil Longview Museum of Fine Arts presents Between The Void, The Vine, and The Veil through August 31. The collection is abstract art by Kelly Dillard abstract art.

“My work is an expression of an interpretation of life and nature,” she says.

“The perception and emotion of what is before me. What is seen and what is often unseen. The void, the vine, and the veil.”

In an artist’s statement, she explains the phrase and what the exhibition means to her.

“The void is considered a vacuum, a space, a negative, an absence, an emptiness and what grows between (a void, a vine, a veil). It provokes feelings of isolation and introspection, a lack of meaning. But is it void of all things? If you really look closely, it is full of life, full of dreams, and full of possibilities, waiting to emerge. The void is the silence, a silent voice, yet a mind which is constantly thinking, dreaming, and creating.

“The vine twists and turns and grows wildly, holding to a host. In winter’s starkness, it is nature’s free and pure abstraction of what is to come. The vine can bring protection, shelter, ever emerging, ever growing and ever changing, with what the seasons supply.

“The veil is a covering, a concealment, something that obscures your vision, a mystery. The veil can alter one’s perception. What is reality? What is the truth, if you can’t see beyond? Just like the fog of the mountain mist covers what exists in front of you, the veil covers reality, distorting your perception. The veil forces your focus on what is right in front of you, but instead you squint to see beyond. What is below the veil? What is behind the boundaries? What is the mystery?”

Between The Void, The Vine, and The Veil is a trinity of what is seen, felt, and remembered. A metaphor for the search for

Winnsboro Celebrates Words, Wonder, and Whimsey Book lovers, storytellers and literary adventurers are getting ready to embark on a weekend of words, wonder and whimsey in Winnsboro for the 7th Annual Festival of Books on May 2 and 3. Hosted by Winnsboro Center for the Arts (WCA), this free event allows guests to meet and chat with authors from all over Texas and enjoy a variety of literary activities for all ages. The event takes place in the Bowery Pedestrian Park in downtown Winnsboro where guests enjoy meandering through the charming shops and eateries that provide the backdrop for the book festival.

This year’s focus is on how writing and sharing one’s story benefits mental health. Activities from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Friday include a Meet & Greet with the festival’s celebrated Texas authors; engaging conversations on the art of storytelling and its role in emotional well being; and a performance by East Texas poet, author, and actor Michael Guinn and Friends. Guinn is a two-time National Poetry Slam finalist, five-time Austin Poetry Slam winner, six-time Fort Worth Poetry Slam winner, author of two published poetry collections and mental health advocate.

Saturday activities are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Guinn returns to emcee the festival which will include recitations by the Fort Worth Poetry Society and author book readings. A marketplace gives visitors an opportunity buy signed by Texas authors.

Storybook Fun for Kids is for all ages with interactive art and literacy activities, a puppet show that brings stories to life, and hugs and high-fives from Rainbow Fish, the beloved children’s book character who teaches the joy of sharing.

At 11 a.m. on the main stage, Percussion Things brings a high-energy performance combining interactive storytelling, family-friendly comedy and dynamic percussion instruments from around the world, made all the more fun by audience participation.

From 1 to 2 p.m., there’s an open mic session where guests can sign up on site for a time slot to tell stories or read poetry.

Winnsboro Center for the Arts plays a key role in bringing cultural programming, exhibitions and entertainment to Winnsboro and East Texas. WCA is supported in part by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. Winnsboro’s Cultural Arts District is recognized by

Gullings Named National Finalist for ‘Gridiron Symphony’

Dr. Kyle Gullings, a professor of music at The University of Texas at Tyler, was recently named a national finalist for the American Prize in Competition – Professional Orchestra Division for the performance of his original composition, “Gridiron Symphony.”

The work was commissioned and performed by the East Texas Symphony Orchestra and premiered in March 2024 at the UT Tyler R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center.

“This recognition speaks to the strong support that UT Tyler and its School of Performing Arts offers to its faculty in their professional development,” said Gullings, who applied for the award last April.

“It is also a testament to the vision and expert execution of the folks at the East Texas Symphony Orchestra as well as

the commitment of our project partners in the marching band programs at Tyler Legacy and Tyler High Schools.”

Winners are announced this fall.

The American Prize, founded in 2010, is designed to recognize and reward the best performing artists, directors, ensembles and composers in the United States at professional, college/university, community and high school levels, based on submitted recordings. Thousands of artists from all 50 states have derived benefit from their participation in the contests, representing hundreds of communities and arts organizations across the nation.

Gullings joined the UT Tyler faculty in 2011. He previously served as the university’s School of Performing Arts director 2019–2023. With nearly 20 years of experience as a music theory and composition instructor, Gullings has enjoyed

more than 50 performances of his works.

Additionally, he has had several peerreviewed presentations and publications as well as one grant in the field of music theory pedagogy.

He holds bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in music composition.

With a mission to improve educational and health care outcomes for East Texas and beyond, UT Tyler offers more than 90 undergraduate and graduate programs to more than 10,000 students.

Through its alignment with UT Tyler Health Science Center and UT Health East Texas, UT Tyler has unified these entities to serve Texas with quality education, research and patient care.
