Tucked into the rolling hills of the North Wessex Downs, Walkeridge Farm now offers a romantic escape in their luxury shepherd’s hut. With sweeping views over real-life Watership Down — made famous in Richard Adams’ beloved 1972 novel — this peaceful retreat is perfect for those craving fresh air, wildlife and wide skies.
Larger than a conventional hut, this beautifully crafted retreat has been converted from a GPO wagon and finished with high-end fixtures, quality furnishings and thoughtful details throughout. There’s a kingsized bed, fully equipped kitchen, stylish shower room, and a cosy living space. Outside, relax on loungers, fire up the BBQ or gather around the fire pit beneath skies protected by the International Dark Sky Reserve.
Set within its own wildflower meadow, the hut offers privacy, comfort and an uninterrupted connection to the surrounding landscape. The 72-acre working farm is nature-friendly, home to sheep, cattle and horses, and visited by owls, hares, muntjac deer and red-listed corn buntings.
Though Walkeridge also hosts a separate certified location campsite for Caravan and Motorhome Club
members, the shepherd’s hut remains a world of its own. It’s also dog-friendly — with a doggy welcome pack included for fourlegged guests.
There’s much to do in the area. The 70-mile Wayfarer’s Walk runs from the doorstep, linking the local chalk downs at the mud flats and salt marshes of the coast around Emsworth Harbour, giving inspirational views and access to pretty villages with welcoming pubs with much wildlife to be spotted along the way.
Highclere Castle is a favourite with guests, the key filming location for TV’s Downton Abbey, with grand gardens designed by the famous Capability Brown and both a rich history and lively modern character, colourfully shared with the public by current owners Lord and Lady Carnarvon.
The erstwhile home of Regency novelist Jane Austen at Chawton is another delight for many Walkeridge guests, sometimes on the way to the delightful city of Winchester, capital of King Alfred’s Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex and nowadays a vibrant city of culture with great places to eat, drink, shop and sight-see. Winchester Cathedral is famously big and beautiful.

Handmade goods from Creature Comforts Upholstery are unique, beautiful, high quality and individual, frequently bespoke. As the company slogan says: “Every piece has a story – let’s start yours!”
Business owner Helen Davis gained her upholstery experience and passion for fabrics from girlhood, learning from her expert mother, who worked as an upholsterer for some 35 years. When she became ill, Helen gave up her accountancy job to look after and work alongside her, but sadly she died last year.
Her legacy lives on through Creature Comforts Upholstery, a true family business which produces a wide range of products, including reupholstered furniture, made-tomeasure curtains and blinds and fabric-based accessories such as cushions, headboards, pet beds and lampshades.
Sometimes customers want their own furniture restored, perhaps preserving the memory of a previous owner or simply imparting freshness into old dining chairs or stools. One person may commission Helen to make a personalised gift, another may want co-ordinated soft furnishings for a complete room.
Handmade craftsmanship gives a luxurious feel to any project, large or small. Discovery Kitchens & Joinery imparts that special quality to every project, whether a one-off piece of free-standing furniture, a bespoke fitted kitchen, a houseful of new windows and doors, rustic porch or home extension.
Discovery Kitchens & Joinery is a family-run business with more than 25 years’ experience of designing and making quality creations in wood, to suit customers’ own needs, ideas and wishes. They can make furniture in any and every style and welcome the chance to be innovative. Great effort is made to ensure that the end results not only match, but exceed expectations.
Owner Jon Cooper and his team have the expertise to design kitchens and other assignments from scratch for each individual property. They also have specialists in all of the construction trades who sub-contract with them, so that each project is professionally finished, complete with electrics, plumbing, tiling, plastering and brickwork as needed. They can also work to tighter budgets, perhaps installing new kitchen doors and
Even though Helen’s mum is no longer there, her ideals of impeccable customer service and painstaking attention to detail are central to every project. Helen visits every customer’s home to understand exactly how and where each creation will be used.
Helen says: “Whenever I go to work, every day, I’m with Mum again. I’ve got her back.”
Customers can visit the workshop to see work in progress, make enquiries or shop for ready-made goods.

Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace. The Willows is a 10-acre family-owned natural burial site near South Croxton (between Leicester and Melton Mowbray), with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside. Here the tranquil surroundings of meadow, woodland and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost.
Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since opening in 2011, inviting families of the buried or pre-purchased plots, to join in at their annual planting weekend.
The Willows is a place for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site after a service elsewhere. If families do have a service on site, and subject to safe weather conditions, their fee includes use of a small pop-up shelter and limited seating for those attending. The natural burial option can be a cost-effective alternative
Historic character and modern luxury come finely blended together at Greystonedale Mansion, offering stately staycations for up to 14 people. Recently renovated to very high standards, this splendid, slightly Gothic and extremely liveable holiday home comes replete with antiques and vintage treasures. It is also brilliantly placed for exploring northern England, including the Roman heritage of Hadrian’s Wall – a UNESCO World Heritage Site - and Northumberland National Park.
Greystonedale is in the pleasant market town of Haltwhistle, between Carlisle and Newcastle upon Tyne and, by some calculations, in the very centre of Britain. It was originally a varnish factory, but now offers elegant, colourful and indulgently comfortable quarters for family groups, either in the three-bedroomed mansion alone, or with the addition of another house with two more family rooms.
Travel journalists from esteemed national newspapers have heaped praise on the transformed property, which offers both appealingly spacious rooms, including one where everyone can eat together, and numerous cosy nooks and crannies. The whole house is packed with distinctive décor and period features,
to a traditional cemetery burial or cremation, whilst also giving something back to nature and the environment.
Chris and Jenny work with your chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment.

“Our first but hopefully not our last stay. Having a very reactive dog, Brian’s Cottage is perfect, have been able to walk miles without meeting anyone. – If you know, you know – finding a suitable place is hard and here ticks all the boxes. That aside, the welcome gifts for both humans & dogs, the first night meal, the cottage etc is wonderful too. Having loved the peace, the wildlife, the hospitality it is sad to go. Thank you”

Taking a techy time-out is recommended for supporting good mental health, by organisations including the NHS, MIND and many other reputable organisations. Reducing screen time, doom scrolling and bombardment by information from news sources, advertising and social media has been widely shown to reduce stress and anxiety, improve concentration and better connect with family and friends, as well as freeing up time to invest in other activities.
Simply stepping away from all things electrical can have a calming effect. Spending time in nature is a great alternative with therapeutic and social benefits.

Counselling
Hi, I’m Kitty — a person-centred counsellor who works with teenagers, adults, and parents in a way that’s warm, honest, and truly human.
I don’t do “one-size-fits-all” therapy. I get to know you—the real you—and together we shape sessions around what you need, in a way that feels right for you. That might mean talking things through, exploring creatively, using metaphor, humour, silence or story. It’s not just about problems—it’s about you having a space to be fully seen, heard, and supported.
I have a special place in my heart for teenagers—those often misunderstood, in-between years. I offer a space where young people can drop the mask, express what’s really going on, and be met with respect, warmth, and zero judgement.
Family life can be messy, emotional, and complex. You don’t have to figure it all out alone.
Sessions are available face-to-face, online, or even outdoors with walk-and-talk therapy—whatever suits you best. I also have an emotional support dog available for in-person sessions, if wanted.
Let’s begin with a chat and go from there.

‘Plant a tree, cook a meal, sing a song.’ Velindre House is a unique and bohemian setting for groups to come together to enjoy the finer things in life; to thrive with nature, connect with friends, make music, share a sauna, get creative and cook up a feast on a fire pit.
Velindre House is a place to walk, rest, play and exercise among the woods and rivers, practice yoga in lush gardens, indulge in a relaxing massage from our qualified on-site masseuse, and marvel at star-studded dark skies. It’s an eco-friendly corner of West Wales ideal for writers’, artists’, spiritual and wellbeing retreats, handfastings, reunions, hen parties, stag parties and celebrations of all kinds, with plenty of parking available
Full catering of a tasty, organic, sustainably-sourced kind can be arranged by the in-house team, The Barefoot Gourmet.
Velindre House is completely private and truly magical, a Georgian villa within the village of Drefach Felindre. It was built in 1792, designed by the renowned architect John Nash, of Buckingham Palace and Brighton Pavilion fame. With 16th century foundations, seven gorgeous bedrooms, three bathrooms and four spacious communal rooms, it is supremely cosy, even in winter, full of character from exposed beams, log burners, nooks, crannies and quiet corners.
The house is a joy for up to 16 guests. Owner, manager and musician Sarah Jewell has filled it with charming antiques, objects d’art, traditional Welsh textiles, modern art and restored furniture. Outside, she has assembled unique, hand-built cabins, a large, wood-fired sauna and quirky accommodation for another 12 people; a yurt, bell tents, tipis and a cute shepherd’s hut. Indoor partying can carry on late, thanks to the house’s threefeet deep, noise-absorbing walls!
The property stands on the cusp of three counties, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire, and the grounds attract wildlife including otters, herons, hawks, water voles, rare butterflies, bees and songbirds. It has its own lake and a tiny island, reached by the kayaks provided. Brechfa Forest and the Brecon Beacons are within 20 minutes’ drive.
Local beaches are amazing and often deserted off-season, the nearest at Penbryn, 12 miles away and Mwnt, a hot spot for dolphins. Local places of interest open all year include the awesome Cenarth Falls, the Welsh Wildlife Centre, Marine Park and the Welsh Wool Museum, beloved by traditional crafters. There’s a fabulous traditional pub, John Y Gwas Tavern, practically next door and a good local bus service.
Guests are welcome to visit the community allotment that Sarah has established on land adjoining Velindre House. Every booking of The Barefoot Gourmet contributes to that project.
Sarah says: “We genuinely love hosting, as reflected in our 100% Five Star guest reviews on Airbnb. We love meeting new people and welcoming previous guests who often return for yearly gatherings.
“We can organise boat trips for you, foraging. Coasteering, bushcraft and wild swimming.
Our Wellness workshops include on site healing modalities with our fabulous qualified masseuse, art therapy, creative writing, group singing, sound baths and of course, yoga.”
