NEWPORT

Escape to the Isle of Wight Top Places To Stay

Wildlife thrives on the Isle of Wight, the whole of which is designated a UNESCO Biosphere, where the ecosystem is so rich and well balanced that it supports a multitude of plants and animals, as well as people. While some are out seeking the fossils from the Jurassic period, the beady-eyed can spy living rarities such as red squirrels, white tailed eagles, dormice, water voles and even Glanville fritillary butterflies. You just have to know what you’re looking for!

SOUTH-WEST

Atherfield

Green Farm Holiday Cottages are situated in the stunning south-west of the Isle of Wight.

Owned by Jenny and Alistair Davidson, there is a choice of four cottages; Rose, Honeysuckle, Lavender and Wisteria, all of which are accessible for disabled guests.

Three of the cottages were converted in 2001 and are attractively sited around a central, level courtyard. Rose, was the farm’s granary; Honeysuckle, the horse stable; and Lavender the milking parlour. Wisteria Cottage was converted in 2019 and was originally the farm pigsty. It has also seen service as a potato store, a bull pen and the farm workshop. Views from the cottages are spectacular, stretching across miles of unbroken farmland and countryside.

Surrounding Atherfield Green are an intricate network of quiet lanes and footpaths, and the nearby Downland offers fantastic views across the Island. This makes our location excellent for walkers and cyclists. We also accept dogs, for a small additional charge.

The nearest neighbouring village is Chale Green, approximately 2-miles away, a little further afield are the well-equipped villages of Shorwell and Brighstone, both of which are very picturesque with thatched cottages and ancient churches. Both villages offer local pubs, post offices and shops. Newport, the county town of the Island, is approximately fifteen minutes away by car. Because of our rural location, we do recommend you have your own form of transport as we are not on a bus route.

While Nature does her best, the staff of Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, Sandown, give her a helping hand to look after animals that don’t naturally originate from the Isle of Wight, including excircus lions and tigers and older animals from traditional zoos which carry out conservation and breeding programmes. It’s both a treat and an education to see these lovely creatures in their safe and supportive forever homes.

Banff & Buchan forms the northern shoulder of Aberdeenshire, offering a succession of pretty and interesting seaside resorts such as Banff and Portsoy, ports such as Peterhead and Fraserburgh, scenic spaces and bays fringed by sandy beaches on the Moray Firth. It’s a fantastic corner of Scotland which offers much and delivers more, including plenty of the traditional attractions, such as multiple golfing and fishing venues and the Speyside Malt Whisky Trail, which takes in seven notable distilleries.

Some 11 major rivers empty into the Moray Firth, creating a massively important marine habitat for literally hundreds of species, so the Moray Marine Aquarium at Macduff is a ‘must see’ for anyone even vaguely interested in wildlife. The aquarium guides visitors from the shores to the underwater kelp reef exhibit – the only one of its kind in the UK – to the sea lab and shark hatchery, then the mysteries of the deep reef and seafloor. Wow!

For a fascinating few hours exploring, The Peterhead Trail can be followed through a succession of smugglers, heroes, poets, ghosts, war, witchcraft and rebellion. Download the route from www.peterheadtrail.co.uk . Meanwhile The Platform, Macduff, offers a wonderfully different shopping and lifestyle experience in a former railway station on the coast.

Escape to Argyll and The Isles

The Isle of Shuna offers a wealth of peace and solitude which could be a world away from the mainland and not just 20 miles from Oban. Roughly three miles long and 1.5 miles wide, it’s a privately owned paradise with no roads, cars or power cables, run as a working farm. Visitors can roam without restriction.

Here, as everywhere outdoor enthusiasts are in their element, but you don’t have to be superfit and athletic, nor even a golfer or whisky enthusiast, to enjoy this lovely region. There’s plenty of interest to explore and experience, from cheery ceilidhs to castles aplenty.

OBAN

Exclusively for adults, a relaxing stay at Dungallan Country House bed and breakfast will provide you with an oasis of calm in beautiful, tranquil surroundings.

One very fine edifice not to be missed is Inveraray Castle, built in Gothic Revival style on the shores of Loch Fyne and home to the Duke & Duchess of Argyll. Standing in magnificent gardens, this is the ancestral home of Clan Campbell – highly significant in British history – and is full of artefacts and treasures from generations of the family.

In contrast, Auchindrain Historic Township gives the chance to experience the longhouses, barns, byres, stables and other features rural Scotland as it was lived until the 1750s, without power or running water. Today it’s an open air museum, complete with gift shop, tea room and toilets.

A relaxing stay at Dungallan Country House bed and breakfast will provide you with an oasis of calm in beautiful, tranquil surroundings. Dungallan Country House boasts luxury accommodation including 4 individually designed suites with each of their bathrooms enjoying the benefits of a roll top bath, stand-alone power shower, dual sinks, beautiful marble tiling and underfloor heating.

Being a short walk to amenities and on the doorstep of Scottish island hopping, you will be well placed to explore the area, play a round of golf or simply kick back and enjoy the uninterrupted views from the terrace or lounge bar, indulging in a glass of your favourite tipple or even an afternoon tea.

It’s clear to see why the Duke of Argyll picked this particular spot to build Dungallan Country House as his summer residence in 1870. If you decide to visit Inveraray Castle, the home of the current Duke of Argyll, Chief of the Clan Campbell, you will see that the boar’s head, carved in stone above the substantial Dungallan front door, is part of the Clan Campbell coat of arms.

SHUNA

Escape the stresses of modern life and get back to nature on an island where time stands still. Imagine a holiday with no cars, no telephones, no roads, just an abundance of wildlife (red deer, fallow deer, roe deer, otters, seals, eagles) and the romance of life on a private island. A model for sustainability, Shuna, a working farm, has no ugly power lines. Solar panels and a small turbine harness the power of the sun and the wind for electricity. With a boat (provided) to visit neighbouring islands and explore Shuna’s hidden coves you may even catch your own fish supper!

Shuna is approximately three miles long and one and a half miles wide, covering an area of over 1,000 acres. The island is 20 miles south of the Hebridean tourist hub of Oban, known as “The Gateway to the Isles”. The boat trip to Shuna from the mainland pier at Arduaine takes around 20 minutes. Shuna has just seven holiday cottages so you often feel as if you have the whole island to yourself. Visitors are free to explore without restriction. Sheep are farmed on the island, which remains a working estate and visitors are welcome to join in with the farming activities when appropriate. The main architectural feature is the ruined castle - a Victorian neogothic classic. Legend has it the local Argyllshire architect went down with the Titanic in 1912, complete with the plans he was hoping to export to America.

This is the perfect escape. Watch the stars at night and fall asleep trying to catch the sound of Putsborough’s crashing waves.

The peaceful fields are tucked away in a secluded valley away from the hustle and bustle of Croyde, yet only 10 minutes walk from the centre of the village and a 15 minute stroll to Putsborough beach. With several fields to offer, there’s plenty of space to pitch your tent or park your van. Our top fields offer the most spectacular views across the fields to Woolacombe, Croyde and even Wales on a clear day! This hidden gem is like no other and well worth a visit, if only for a night.

Combas Farm, Devon, sits in a secluded valley, just a gentle stroll from lovely Putsborough sands, and near the ‘surfing capital’ of North Devon, Croyde Bay. ADVENTURE AWAITS Our Top Campsites

Continuing our fantastic camping trail, we take you into three areas famous for providing family-friendly holidays with great beaches, lots of amenities and masses of choice for activities.

Roey’s Retreat sits between the lively port town of Bideford and the seaside resort of Bude on the Atlantic coast. Visitors often head for landmarks such as Hartland Point, a rocky outcrop where the Bristol Channel meets the Atlantic Ocean, stirring up fierce currents. Ancient Romans knew it as the Promontory of Hercules, but the feature most noted by modern visitors is the Grade 2 listed lighthouse.

CLOVELLY DEVON

Roey’s Retreat is at the midpoint between Bideford and Bude, and it’s just off the A39 for easy journeys to either (or a whole host of other beaches and attractions…)

This setting isn’t all about getting out elsewhere though – it’s also a great spot for walks down to Clovelly, less than two miles away, or other rambles along the South West Coast Path and around the Hartland Devon Heritage Coast. A drive of five minutes or so will get you to the neighbouring villages of Hartland or Woolfardisworthy for shops and pubs, or you can stroll to the local social club a couple of minutes away for drinks.

Owner Nick hasn’t just relied on location alone to make his campsite an attractive place, either – he’s also kitted it out with all sorts of handy features including picnic benches, firepits, a play area with swings, and a shop selling various groceries and essentials (where you can also hire any camping kit you may have forgotten – electric leads for the hookups, air bed pumps and the like). Toilets and showers are provided, as are a washing-up area and a chemical disposal point for tourers.

On top of all this is a friendly atmosphere that extends to welcoming families and dogs and involves Nick bringing everyone together for a sociable barbecue evening once a week (though you can also hire barbecues to do your own cooking too). You’re also welcome to use the covered seating area where you can shelter from the rain (or, more hopefully, the sun) while having your meals and drinks – it makes a nice friendly alternative to hanging out at your tent.

Two Jays Farm is on the Norfolk Broads, about 20 minutes’ drive from Norwich and half an hour from the seaside towns of Cromer and Great Yarmouth, the former with a heritage pier, lifeboat museum and Amazona Zoo, the latter with its Pleasure Beach rides, gardens and amusements and Sea Life Centre.

Uphill Marina & Touring Park, Somerset, is within walking distance of friendly Weston-SuperMare, another resort with sand, sea and great entertainment for all, including vibrant nightlife.

countylifestyleandleisure.com 46

A beautiful Touring Park & Marina in Somerset

Set in the midst of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), we are nestled in an old quarry under Uphill Hill. You can walk to the watch tower and 11th century church on the hill overlooking the site.

We have a range of touring pitches set around our pretty saltwater lake.

26 hardstanding pitches come with EHU, one without, plus we have a grassed overflow field available for motorhomes and campervans during the summer months, however these do not have EHU.

Uphill is a perfect location to enjoy the very best of Somerset. We’re a stones throw from the all-year dog-friendly Uphill Beach, and just a 30 min stroll into Weston-super-Mare.

• Access to cycle route 33

Brean Down Way

• Nearby Beach

• Beautiful Countryside

• Wonderful Views

• Great for Walkers

• Great Places to Visit

• Ideal for Watersports - free use of the lake for all touring park users (non-motorised craft only)

NORFOLK

Can’t decide between a bit of farm life, bright city lights and refreshing coastal explores?

Two Jays Farm is a small, family-friendly farm in Horstead, just a 20-minutes drive from Norwich and half an hour from Norfolk’s finest beaches. Within walking distance of the most beautiful part of the river which is great for paddle boarding, paddle board and kayak hire is available on site.

Set off on foot or cycle along woodland paths and riverbanks to take in sights like the Bure Valley Railway, Horstead Mill on the River Bure (where you can jump into the water for a wild swim if it’s getting a tad warm) and pretty market towns along the way. Also within walking distance of local pubs including The Recruiting Sergeant, voted best pub in Broadland.

We have homely bell tents available to book. Dogs are welcome on the site.

Archery, mini-golf and play equipment for both young and older children are provided on-site as part of the fun at Church View Campsite, a dog-friendly location in Suffolk. The spot is just a short drive from historic Bury St Edmunds, known as Suffolk’s ‘Foodie Capital’. The town is also well known for combining a great mix of high street and independent shops, beautiful parks and open spaces.

SUFFOLK

A small family run campsite, no frills but everything you need for a quiet retreat in a convenient location.

Family friendly and lively in the summer months and just quiet countryside living when you most need it!

Plenty of lanes to walk or cycle or just wander into the village of Barrow to pick up your supplies. If you decide to ‘stay in’ you are welcome to use your BBQ or firepit while you watch the sun go down. Your four legged friends will love the local walkies and 1 dog is included per pitch. The total number of dogs on site is limited.

With loads of activities in the area the big kids will be happy and the little ones have a small play area on site. The campsite rabbits and chickens love visitors too.

Piccadilly Caravan Park provides a great base for exploring the whole of Wiltshire, but one of the county’s true treasures lies virtually next door, the historic village of Lacock itself. This is a National Trust village, preserved just as it was 200 years ago with its timber-framed cottages, quaint shops, ancient church, tithe barn and hospitable pubs. At its heart is an 800 year old Augustinian abbey and Fox Talbot museum of photography, named after the pioneer who invented the photographic negative.

Bloomery is a Cotswold florist providing flowers in stunningly beautiful designs for every occasion. Creating in season with natural British garden flowers, Bloomery sources the freshest flowers and arranges them into bouquets, sprays, floral wreaths, table decorations or even showstopping centrepieces.

Bloomery loves a celebration of any kind, but wedding flowers are a particular speciality, anything from a Bohemian-style hand-fasting with pergolas and flower arches, to a traditional church extravaganza with a grand formal dinner to follow. The starting point is always a careful consultation with the couple to chat about ideas, colour schemes and themes to ensure a unique, personalised and outstanding outcome.

Once you’ve been inspired, you can learn to create your own arrangement in the regular small group workshops run by the in-house experts at the studio premises in beautiful Broadway. Themes cover everything from welcoming wreaths to moss art. More information and workshop dates can be found online at www.bloomery.co.uk/workshops.

Owner Allyson Martin is a lifelong flower enthusiast who has made it her business to work very much with nature and simultaneously support the local economy. She doesn’t use any eco-nasties, such as non-biodegradable floral foam. She does buy flowers direct from local growers as much as possible, to cut down transportation and take the sweetest-smelling, most bee-friendly varieties she can find.

HOLIDAY INN WINCHESTER

Great base for exploring a great city.

From first impressions to the last goodbye, our stay at Winchester’s Holiday Inn was absolutely fantastic! The wow factor hit us the moment we walked through the door of this special place in the Hampshire countryside and caught the festive feel of the open plan lobby. It stayed with us throughout the stay as we enjoyed excellent meals, efficient, willing service from all the staff and a range of great facilities including our highly restful and indulgent time in the spa.

Comfort and convenience are assured in all the Holiday Inn guest bedrooms, thanks to allround high standards including luxurious beds, LCD satellite TV, chic modern décor, drink-making facilities, power showers, Wi-Fi and round-the-clock room service. Our room was spacious, light and airy and included a safe and a fridge stocked with drinks and snacks.

Dining was a delight, thanks to the Odyssey Restaurant, Bar and Pizzeria, which had a very pleasant relaxed ambience. The menu majors on quality ingredients, locally sourced and beautifully cooked, with a good choice of wines and other beverages. Our meal was absolutely delicious and a sign on the all-day menu said: “Can’t see what you want? Tell us and if we’ve got it, our chefs will make it.” That, to us, summed up the positive vibes of the hotel in general.

Before and after, there were many choices for spending pleasant time hanging out, including a café for takeaways, a work station for people who need to keep in touch with their businesses and an open plan area with lots of easy chairs for enjoying quiet time with a glass of something pleasant.

It was all fantastic, but our time in the Ana Spa was simply the best! This haven of treats for body and soul enabled us to experience bubble loungers, a massage cannon, a Himalayan salt sauna, crystal steam room and effervescent foot spa. Sensory showers, a gym and assorted Elemis treatments were also available.

Next morning, the breakfast was great, very varied with a hot buffet which was constantly replenished for freshness, just the right start for a day spent enjoying the amazing city of Winchester, including its array of shops, café bars and a wonderful cathedral.

We had a fabulous time in this welcoming and very efficiently-run hotel and we wouldn’t hesitate either to stay again or recommend it to our readers.

Tried & Tested

We are a family run establishment and the care we provide is very much based on the ethos that we look after people as if they are part of our own family. Offering individualised care, we aim to maintain independence whilst providing support.

The home itself is a period residence set in two acres of lawns and gardens close to the centre of the small village of Hanley Swan in the heart of the Worcestershire countryside. We are well supported by our local surgery, district nurses, foot care, physiotherapists and a visiting hairdresser. Our CQC rating is GOOD.
