Idyllic Lakeland location in walkers’ paradise

Lake District perfection in the three stunning selfcatering properties of Riverside Terrace. Holding a rare 5 Star Gold rating from Visit England and set at the foot of awesome Loughrigg Fell, these ecologically friendly contemporary-styled holiday homes curve around an idyllic scene overlooking the River Rothay and the fells beyond. They offer a tranquil retreat next door to the former elegant period residence and home of Romantic poet William Wordsworth’s son.

Riverside Terrace sits purpose-designed in the walkers’ paradise of Rydal, with floor to ceiling windows and outdoor areas to make the most of the incredible views across the River Rothay, the rolling fields beyond and up across the fells. The three 2-bedroom apartments – Waterside, Rivers Edge and Viewpoint were built between 2015 and 2017, on the site of a stable block which originally belonged to the Wordsworths’

Stepping Stones Estate, named after the much-loved river crossing very close by. Visitors include herons, deer and occasionally, otters.

Each two-bedroomed apartment is unique, designed for privacy, style and comfort with underfloor heating, log burners, sumptuous beds, bespoke kitchens, high end appliances and designer fabrics and furniture. They are pet-free and available for adults and children over 10. All bedrooms are en-suite. Riverside Terrace is ecologically significant with its own water supply, air-source heat pumps, a green living roof that provides insulation and a habitat for local wildlife.

Just 20 minutes’ ramble away is the bustling town of Ambleside, with a pleasing plethora of shops, bars and restaurants selling everything for the outdoor enthusiast, wildlife watcher, book lover, souvenir hunter and Lakeland explorer. The town sits on the

northern tip of Windermere, the largest lake in England and is conveniently located for boat trips and visiting popular destinations such as Beatrix Potter’s long-time home, Hill Top House, or her picture gallery in pretty Hawkshead; Stock Ghyll Force waterfall and the biking trails of Grizedale Forest.

Owners Mick and Sarah say: “The location is out of this world. It is tranquil and peaceful, but close enough to walk into the popular town of Ambleside or a short taxi ride from a greater selection of high-quality restaurants close by. Several of the best fell walks in the Lakes are reachable by foot from the properties.

Oltco, the UK and Channel Islands’ leading sustainable resin bound driveway specialist, originally formed in Cornwall in 2004.

In 2019, the company’s CoDirectors Tom Stringer and Johnny Pearce developed Recycle Bound – a unique and world-first solution to help tackle the issue of plastic waste. Made utilising waste plastic (including straws, plastic drink bottles and food packaging) from plastic recycling points, each square metre of Recycle Bound consists of the equivalent of 3,000 plastic straws. To put this into perspective, if Recycle Bound was laid on a standard 70 metre square drive, the equivalent of 210,000 plastic straws would be recycled in the process!

The company has recently played its part in recycling the equivalent

of over 400 million plastic straws in driveways, pathways and patios up and down the country using its innovative and award-winning Recycle Bound driveway solution.

Since its launch, Recycle Bound has enjoyed resounding success, winning accolades that include ‘Sustainability Warrior Award’ at the BFA HSBC British Franchising Awards, and runner up for ‘Recycled Product of the Year’ at the National Recycling Awards.

Co-Directors of the Oltco Worcester and Kidderminster franchise - Adam Johnson, Jamie Osborne and Jon Osborne, take pride in every outdoor surface that they transform with our premium resin bound blends, working

across Worcester, Kidderminster and the surrounding areas.

As brothers, Jamie and Jon met Adam when they were just four years old. The three of them have grown up together in the area and have an incredible bond which has grown from strength to strength over the years, with their Oltco partnership strengthening this even further.

With a lifetime of memories together, Adam, Jamie and Jon know each other inside and out and can play to one another’s strengths in order to maximise their success, and deliver the best results.

Beach lovers, walkers and watersports fans will love family friendly Beachside

Glamping Dale in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. The spot is peacefully placed within a 25 acre farm just a short stroll from a pebble beach and a mile from the Blue Flag Beach at Dale, where people can enjoy sea-based activities from crabbing to sailing, including surfing, kayaking and bodyboarding.

In Dale, visitors can hire equipment, take lessons to hone their skills and be wowed by the experts. There are many places to eat and drink, while nearby Haverfordwest provides plentiful shops and other amenities. Many people take local boat trips, perhaps from Martins Haven to Skomer Island, where, in season, they can see wildlife such as

puffins, dolphins and seals. Trendy Milford Haven Waterfront is about 10 minutes’ drive away, redesigned to house fashionable shops, bars and eateries.

Beachside Glamping Dale offers four spacious and beautifully decorated bell tents with their own private toilet and shower block next door, together with a kitchenette, barbecue and fire pit. Each tent has a comfy double bed and two singles, but with the addition of folding Z-beds, they can be configured to sleep up to six people. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on leads.

In addition, there is a communal area with a shared fridge, freezer and microwave and lots of play space where children can run around and have fun.

The site is run by fourth generation farm owners Graham and Pauline Reynolds with help from their three daughters and other family members. One of the daughters, Claire Williams, says: “We keep numbers to a maximum of 24 on site at any time, all with their own private facilities, so they don’t have to share with other guests.

“This is a great base for walking the Pembrokeshire coast, which is really beautiful, or for exploring everything that Pembrokeshire has to offer.”

Stained glass windows have long been used to embellish churches, cathedrals and other grand edifices, but now they are increasingly finding their way into people’s homes and modern buildings of all kinds. Specialist Tim Clevely caters for the full range, from repairs and restoration to commissions for unique and eye-catching new ones. Tim brings more than 30 years’ experience to bear on each individual assignment, working not only throughout his own county of Worcestershire but also all over the country. He provides the highest quality professional services for all aspects of the work, from large scale ecclesiastical projects to small domestic ones, such as restoration of an intricate Tiffany glass lampshade.

When restoring damaged pieces, Tim aims to retain as much of the original glass as possible using authentic or closely matched materials, perhaps even making painted copies when they cannot be rescued. He also installs protective structures to preserve them and repairs their ancient frameworks, whether in wood, metal or stone, using sturdy and rust-proof fixtures to

ensure their stability and good looks for generations to come.

Tim also works on customers’ personal projects, accepting commissions which incorporate their own thoughts on design and special features. These he translates into beautifully crafted pieces to catch the light and stand out within their setting. Recent works have included a poppy-themed memorial window, a contemporary daffodil panel and several more traditional designs to adorn front doors and feature windows, even those which are double-glazed.

“I enjoy the complete range of the work,” says Tim. “I like both the craft side of it and the design side. I enjoy working with both traditional designs and contemporary ones and love working with clients to bring their own ideas into being. I’m equally at home in the studio as I am on site, either fitting my own windows or those for other studios. I feel very lucky to be able to work doing something I enjoy so much.”

If you’re feeling stressed, anxious, lost, confused or disillusioned, take heart. Calming help is at hand via Louise Claridge Life Coaching and Holistic Healing and it is 100% geared to your own particular needs and wishes.

Bromsgrove-based Louise worked as a hospital manager before training as a life coach and energy healer. Her NHS career gave her a thorough appreciation of conventional western medicine, but her personal journey through a mental health crisis taught her, too, the value of alternative and holistic therapies. As a result, she undertook extensive training enabling her to pass on the benefits

to other people, qualifying as a Reiki Master, sound healer, crystal therapist and life coach.

Now, through her website www. justlou.co.uk , Louise offers her clients a choice of individually focussed treatments. These include Reiki energy healing – either in person or at a distance – to aid relaxation and relieve anxiety; sound baths to generate an exquisite, immersive feeling of well-being and crystal therapy to help people access their inner wisdom.

Louise’s life coaching encounters all begin with a free, confidential half hour Discovery Session in a tranquil

treatment room with a background of soothing music, in which she explores what the client hopes to achieve or experience. This may be anything from setting goals to alleviating worry or recovering a deeper sense of personal identity and sense of technology purpose. These sessions, too, may be face-to-face or at a distance, utilising Zoom or other social media platforms.

Ultimately, the aim is to give people the tools by which to manage their own wellbeing and support their own mental health and happiness, especially at a time when many people’s anxiety levels have been exacerbated by the COVID pandemic,

cost of living crisis and global unrest. People may sign up for just one session or several.

“Everyone is different and how it works is all up to them,” says Louise. “It is about getting them back on the path to where they actually want to go, supporting them to know who they are, who they want to be and how to make the necessary changes.”

Beaverscroft is a picture perfect 17th century stone barn conversion set in the unspoilt beauty of the Peak District National Park, next to the iconic landmark of the Howden Dam. Accommodating up to eight people self-catering, it comes not only with outstanding views, reservoir access, wonderful walks and two acres of gorgeous gardens, but also with its own slice of legendary British history.

It was here, on the Derwent Reservoir in beautiful Hope Valley, that the airmen of RAF Squadron 617 practised low level drops of

revolutionary bouncing bombs for their daring ‘Dam Busters’ raid on Germany’s Ruhr Valley dams. Their mission of 1943 cost 53 of them their lives, but succeeded in flooding the valley and dealing a body blow to Nazi war production. Beaverscroft offers high end contemporary facilities within the tastefully converted stone barn, providing sleeping arrangements for eight people in three bedrooms plus twin beds on a mezzanine floor overlooking the open plan lounge, which has a log burner. The property has two bathrooms, a

well-equipped kitchen and outdoor dining space on a private patio that includes a large fire pit, barbecue and pizza oven.

Owners Ab and Pippa are Airbnb ‘superhosts’ who live in the nearby farmhouse and embrace a sustainable lifestyle for themselves and their guests. The entire property is off-grid, powered by solar panels and a biomass heat generator and making use of the fresh stream water. Pets are allowed and fresh herbs and vegetables are available in the garden in season. In-house

catering can be arranged on special occasions.

The property is well within reach of appealing tourist destinations such as Bakewell, Buxton and the ‘plague village’ of Eyam, but Ab says: Most people who come don’t leave the property because there are lots of different walks, bike trails and running routes to enjoy on-site. It’s a place that inspires.”

Tranquil surroundings, dark skies and plenty of space are just a few of the numerous delights to be enjoyed while glamping with ecofriendly Into the Woods Cumbria. Based in the beautiful Eden Valley – significantly quieter than the nearby Lake District in tourist season – this wonderfully rustic setting has a quirky but luxurious family-friendly tree house complete with its very own football pitch. It also has a separate glampsite with cabins, camping pitches and social space available to hire as a whole for exuberant festivals,

parties, weddings and celebrations including hen and stag parties.

Into the Woods is intended as a rustic, close-to-nature off-grid experience for people who want to chillax in idyllic countryside. Guests sometimes cycle into the Pennines or wander down to the River Eden. ‘Must sees’ nearby include Lacy’s Caves, which were carved out of the sandstone cliffs in the 18th century, and Long Meg, an impressive stone circle named for a witch who was reputedly turned to stone for breaking the Sabbath. The tree house, Silva, was

craftsman-made by Grant Rowley, who runs the site with his wife, Lucy and their four children. It overlooks the Blencathra mountain and comes with a hot tub, wood burner, underfloor heating, hammocks … and a ping-pong table. Unusually, it sleeps up to six people in two king-sized beds and one double. Hares, owls, deer and many other wild creatures stop by to enjoy the woodland, wildflower meadow, ponds and hedgerows.

Into the Woods glampsite has three cosy off-grid cabins for two, with shared shower and toilet facilities

and cooking space, plus space for 20 tents and campervans. At the heart is The Man Shack, with a bar, stage, DJ booth and outdoor kitchen complete with large pizza oven & BBQ.

Lucy says: “We can accommodate events, festivals and weddings with up to 120 people.”

Countryside lovers and horse racing enthusiasts will be thrilled by stays with The Downs Stables Holidays, holding prime position in the historic National Hunt racing yard which trained one of the most famous Grand National winners of all time, Aldaniti. The story of that unlikely feat was immortalised in the film Champions.

Guests of The Downs Stables Holidays will be able to soak up the atmosphere of this busy yard as the horses, trainers and stable staff go about their business.

Ruth Gifford, Nick’s wife, says: “If people would to tour the yard or see the horses on the gallops, that can be arranged.”

wildflower meadow which creates the most wonderful showing during summer and encourages wildlife all year round.

During the daytime the site has glorious views to the Presceli Hills and from March, one shepherd’s hut and both geodomes will have their own private hot tubs from which to enjoy them. All are furnished to create a luxuriously relaxing atmosphere for couples making special memories, with facilities including quality beds and bedding, kitchenettes, bathrooms and outdoor seating and barbeque space.

For an added special touch,

the owners’ on-site farm shop offers premium products from Pembrokeshire producers, including beef from their own farming enterprise. All follows the ‘Gate to Plate’ ethos supporting sustainability and best practice in animal welfare. Breakfast hampers and other tasty offerings can be provided for a memorable cooking experience.

Owner Emily Thomas and her husband used the first of the shepherd’s huts for their own wedding night accommodation and says there is no better place to enjoy a deep Pembrokeshire sunset and then those amazing star-studded skies.

But there is also much to do for those who want to go out and about. Emily says: “We’re near to loads of great places, including being only about 30 minutes from St Davids, the UK’s smallest city. Solva, Little Haven, Tenby and Saundersfoot are all within easy reach and in season you can take a boat trip to Skomer Island to see the puffins.”

Named after creatures which inhabit the surrounding land, the cottages sleep from two to seven people. One, Badger, can accommodate eight if booked with a self-contained suite. Some properties overlook the landmark White Horse of Kilburn and all are within convenient driving distance of York, the Dales and the beautiful east coast.

The accommodation is chic, warm and comfortable, the surroundings peaceful and the potential for memorable days out absolutely unbeatable.

Six of the purpose-designed, glamping pods can accommodate not only two over-18s but also a dog in cosy privacy, each with a

super-comfy Zip & Link bed, sofa seating, a coffee table and outdoor bistro furniture for those intimate evenings together on the decking. Two more ‘posh pods’, a luxury cabin and a yurt of the sort used by nomadic tribes are all kept dog-free and styled to help couples make the very best of their short breaks. This well-managed site, which holds a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence, has toilets and shower blocks close by, including modern wetroom showers with disability access, laundry and washing up areas and fridges and freezers.

A short distance away is the well-established Willow Caravan Park and there, too, the excellent Willow Farm Café, serving delicious farmhouse meals made with choice local produce.

Outdoors, the site lends itself to romantic wanders, with three large ponds attracting ducks, kingfishers and many other wild visitors. The nearby village of Wigginton offers a wide range of take-aways and several friendly food pubs.

York itself has activities including cruising the Ouse, marvelling at the Minster’s rich heritage, niche shopping in the medieval

surroundings of The Shambles or taking in the sights, sounds and smells of ancient England under Viking rule. Some guests have a day at the races, try epicurean treats or take a day out to the seaside, perhaps using the North York Moors Railway to get to Whitby.

Plants always cheer up a home or an office, but there’s evidence they make people feel better too, aiding their physical and mental wellbeing in multiple ways. Plantamamita aims to spread that green glow of health with a range of unique and special plant arrangements which are handcrafted with love, care and great-looking blooms and foliage. It’s not hard to know why plants are good for us as they are nature’s natural cleanser, removing all manner of grot from the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide, traffic fumes, dust particles and smells from cooking, pets and people. Removal of these irritants may actually reduce people’s susceptibility to eye, throat and

lung disorders and may even assist concentration.

On top of that, simply looking after house plants is thought to generate emotional plus points such as providing an extra area of knowledge and satisfaction, providing a welcome distraction from less enjoyable sensations and connecting people to others with an interest in gardening.

Plantamamita is an independent family business specialising in contemporary plant arrangements which provide maximum impact with minimal looking after. Run from Worcester by passionate plant lover Liuva, the company sells through its own online shop at www.plantamamita.com .

One of the most popular lines is living frames. These are individually designed displays of plants presented as living artworks for vertical hanging, usually made with succulents.

Other popular contemporary displays feature kokedamas, which are a balls of moss covered with soil and bearing ornamental plants; air plants, terrariums, moss frames and hanging plants such as ferns and orchids. All supports and accessories are made from natural materials. Customers can also buy from a great selection of upcycled lamps and plant holders. Everything is eco-friendly and fairly priced.

Liuva says: “I am always trying to provide alternatives to what the everyday garden centres offer.”

Plantamamita rents out boxes mounted on the wall, to other small creative businesses - this is “The Maker Space”. Furthermore they also offer a Coworking space upstairs where people can be productive and work from a different environment for as little as half a day or full days. Perfect for the working nomad.

Kirkcudbright – with a natural harbour which was once home to a fleet of war galleys – has become known since the 1880s for its thriving community of artists. That has grown and developed exponentially and created an annual

arts trail, this year in its 21st year and running from August 4 to 7 with some 150 creative exhibitors opening their homes, gardens, sheds and other venues so people can enjoy and purchase their work, see it being made and ask all the questions they wish.

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FAMILY ACTIVITIES & WELLBEING

My name is Hilly Hannken and I am a yoga teacher with 20 years experience.

ONLINE YOGA

Alongside the weekly face-toface classes I run in Malvern, I also offer online yoga classes via Zoom. Being in the familiar comfort of your own home with no need to travel is, for many people a preferable way to attend a weekly class.

YOGA RETREATS

Every month or so I arrange a yoga retreat. This might be a day retreat or a residential weekend. I have access to some stunning locations within the three counties and sometimes beyond and, alongside a full programme of yoga, relaxation and meditation, there is usually time to explore the local countryside with a walk. These are a great way to step away from the usual pace of life and take some space to reflect with likeminded people and often great friendships are formed.

For more details on all my Yoga and Thai Yoga Massage offerings please see my website: www.hilly-yoga.co.uk

The remaining property is Portree, sleeping eight on the stunning coast of County Antrim frequented by seals, dolphins and numerous seabirds and also with its own hot tub.

Family spokesman James Taylor says: “Our properties are quite luxurious and we get lots of repeat business. We make sure things are professionally run.”
