As my term as President of County Kildare Chamber comes to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the board, the membership and the staff of the Chamber for their support during my term as President. Enduring Brexit, Covid and the current war in Ukraine has brought many challenges to our members during the past few years. I was and am amazed as to how resilient our membership is. What makes County Kildare Chamber what it is today is our membership and the support we all give each other is incredible. The resourcefulness of the Chamber has really come to the fore over the past few years and I am particularly proud that we have continued to grow our membership and that we continue to provide the support and advice that businesses need and ask for.
The Chamber is now the largest business organisation in the Mid-East region of Ireland and our membership engagement has grown to new levels with businesses engaging in our Policy Advisory Council, our HR Forum and our lobbying activity. Our representation on all key boards, committees and forums both in Kildare and also nationally ensures that the voice of business in Kildare is heard. I look forward to the AGM in October and wish the incoming President and executive the very best of luck.

Diageo announce creation of 50 jobs
Diageo, announced their plan to construct what will be Ireland second largest brewery, subject to planning, on a 50-acre site in Littleconnell, Newbridge, and creation of 1,000 jobs during the construction phase. If successful the purpose built, carbon neutral facility will begin brewing a range of ales and lagers, including Hop House 13, Rockshore and Smithwick’s in 2024. When fully operational the brewery will have capacity of two million hectolitres. CEO Allan Shine said “This is just one of a number of developments in the Newbridge area in the last 4 months and shows Kildare is prime for investment and continued development. We are competing and winning this investment in competition with other European locations. It also shows the confidence business leaders have in Kildare, with our excellent transport infrastructure and connectivity, in addition to a well-educated and ambitious young workforce.
Iarnród Éireann announced in July it will lodge an application to An Bord Pleanala for the extension of the electrified DART network from the Connolly/Spencer Dock area to North Kildare and Meath.

In June, Keurig Dr Pepper opened its new site in Newbridge; 300,000 square ft plant was a former Lidl warehouse. This is the group’s second manufacturing plant for beverage concentrate and first outside North America. 20 additional jobs were also announced, to be in place by the end of the year, adding to the team of 80 working at the site across operations, quality assurance, engineering, planning, and research and development. The Co Kildare facility will be responsible for sourcing materials and ingredients from the European and Asian market predominately, along with supply chain teams in Canada and Mexico, and it will also serve as a ‘centre of excellence’ for beverage concentrate production.

CEO of County Kildare Chamber Allan Shine welcomed the announcement saying “This is a positive announcement from Iarnród Éireann . As a business organisation continually seeking to attract inward investment to Kildare, it is important for us to be able to point at a sustainable, efficient transport system connecting commuter hubs and regions together. Encouraging people to walk and use public transport, by increasing the frequency and speed of DART+ is one of the ways we build the regions reputation as sustainable, accessible, and inviting. Progress like this is vital for Ireland meeting its climate targets and helping Kildare becoming carbon neutral.
In July, Diageo announced the creation of 50 jobs at a new brewery to be estabilished in Newbridge.

Keurig Dr Pepper open new site in Newbridge
If planning permission is granted, construction will commence in 2024 and the new service could start operating by 2029, with a statutory public consultation period running until 30 September. The expansion will take in Maynooth and Leixlip in North Kildare and will also include the construction of a new DART depot facility west of Maynooth Station, to maintain the new DART + fleet.

Together with his local colleagues Cllr’s Ivan Keatley and Tracey O’Dwyer, Martin Heydon, TD & Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, looks forward to supporting Kildare County Council, in conjunction with the Thompson family, in the next steps towards full recognition of this important piece of heritage in Kildare.
The €320m North Runway (designated 10L/28R) and associated facilities were delivered on schedule and on budget by daa at no cost to the State. The new runway, located on daa lands some 1.69 kilometres north of Dublin Airport’s existing South Runway, will support the creation of 31,200 new jobs and €2.2 billion in additional economic activity. The development of North Runway has been part of Dublin Airport’s long-term strategic planning and land use prioritisation since the 1960s, which has enabled delivery within Dublin Airport’s existing campus, substantially mitigating cost, disruption and limiting construction time.
County Kildare Chamber congratulate Sonya Kavanagh on her appointment as Chief Executive of Kildare County Council. Allan Shine noted that, “This appointment brings certainty to the role at a crucial time for the council as the county development plan is due to be signed off shortly and preparation of the council budget for 2023 has commenced. Sonya is well known with the business community in Kildare and we look forward to working with Sonya and the executive team within Kildare County Council. It is a hugely exciting time to be involved in business in the county, we are seeing unprecedented demand from businesses looking to set up in Kildare and also from companies in Kildare looking to expand. We have challenges of course but through effective collaboration between all key stakeholders in Kildare, we will continue to thrive and ensure that both businesses and people in Kildare continue to work and live in what we all know is the best county in Ireland.”
Bord na Móna lodge planning application for new building
SIRO, the broadband network operator, have launched its new 100% fibre broadband network in Maynooth. SIRO’s broadband network will bring world class connectivity to 2,500 homes and businesses in Maynooth, with an investment of €4 million in the town. Areas within the town set to benefit include Main Street, O’Neill Park, Parson Street, Leinster Street, Pound Lane, Dublin Road, Doctor’s Lane, Bere Street, Carton Grove, Carton Square, Pebble Hill Park, Limetree Hall, and Back Lane.
Important to Note: Dún Ailinne is a privately owned site and permission to access must be obtained from the landowners before visiting.
In July Bord na Móna announced it had lodged a planning application with Kildare County Council for a new building off the town’s main street. Bord na Móna has had a presence in the Newbridge for over 70 years and currently employs 240 people at its offices in Newbridge.
The new building will be Bord na Mona’s headquarters and is targeting a BER of A2. The building will be completely fossil fuel free, with renewable energy generation on site and a high efficiency heating system. The announcement will greatly enhance the town of Newbridge and comes on the back of a number of good news stories for the town and surrounding areas in recent months.

Did you know that most of the world’s leading food, beverage and pharmaceutical companies have visited Kerry’s Global Innovation Centre in Naas since it opened in 2015. Kerry’s Global Innovation Centre in Naas is at the heart of Kerry’s success, allowing the business to offer its customers the certainty of expert partnership and speed to market in today’s everchanging consumer landscape. A relentless spirit of innovation seeks to replace every product with the next, better thing and across its wide-ranging portfolio, the business’ commitment to sustainable nutrition means it prioritises four primary areas of: food protection and preservation; taste; plant-based foods; and proactive health.
Since 1972, Kerry Group’s 50-year history has been one of constant evolution. Kerry is now considered to be the world leader in sustainable nutrition – this means that it cocreates with its customers to produce food and beverage products that are tastier, healthier and better for our planet.
This year, Kerry is celebrating its 50th anniversary and in 1972 the company was founded in an age of new possibility – a time of huge social, cultural and technological change – and its founders driven by creating a better opportunity for their local communities and region. From the outset with its roots in diary, the business was a disrupter in the market. Competing against established coops, Kerry’s dairy farmers had to look at things a different way, taking new approaches such as extracting protein powder from whey when no others in Ireland were. Today, the focus is delivering sustainable nutrition that is delicious – leading the market in areas such as preservation, fermentation and plant-based proteins.
The campus is situated on 28-acres and is home to over 800 of Kerry’s sustainable nutrition experts, working to solve the latest challenges facing the food and drinks industry as consumers become ever more discerning about what they’re eating and how it’s made.

Indeed, today over one billion people across the world consume products that have a Kerry solution included in it and by 2030, the company aims to increase this to two billion people.

Its recent acquisitions of Biosearch Life and Natreon have supported Kerry in becoming a world leader in probiotics for women’s health. The Naas Innovation Centre is one of excellence – delivering tomorrow’s solutions today. Here, Kerry is driving the industry forward whether through developing new plant-based solutions to feed the fastest growing cities in the world or rapid advancements in food preservation to play its part in confronting the global issue of food security. Importantly, the centre in Naas can bring new products to market in a matter of weeks allowing customers to evolve their products to be the first to meet the evolving needs of today’s discerning customers.
this is the desire for truly sustainable nutrition. Kerry’s approach is core to everything the business does and for decades Kerry has been enhancing the nutritional profile of its customers’ products. Now, its innovation has turned to enabling customers to improve the impact of their products by reducing carbon emissions, food waste or water usage. Derived from Kerry’s strong, global heritage in plant extraction – its Tastesense™ flavours allow the creation of beverages with the same sweetness as regular products but up to 30% less sugar. A Life Cycle Assessment determined the full environmental impact of the products: a 20% reduction in carbon emissions, 30% reduction in water, and 30% reduction in calories versus sugar. To put this in perspective, if Tastesense™ was used on all European cola
products, it would remove 68 billion cubes of sugar; the annual carbon emissions of nearly 30,000 cars; the volume of water used by 11 billion people showering for a year; and the same number of calories burned during 1200 billion hours of cycling. This is just one product in one region –demonstrating the scope of impact of Kerry’s offering on the industry.
Sustainable Kildare was a year long campaign, ran by County Kildare Chamber and sponsored by Intel in collaboration with Global Action Plan and Ducky. The campaign involved three separate challenges where businesses competed against one another to reduce their carbon emissions through changing small things in their daily activities e.g., taking a shorter shower, walking to work instead of driving, turning off unnecessary lights etc. The overall celebration and prize giving took place on Wednesday the 22nd of June, with prizes given out for:

systems to ensure the best decisions are made at every step of production, based on rich data, and powered by automation. The application of smart factory analytics helps manufacturers optimise their production processes, reduce efficiencies, and promote greater productivity.
Chris Collins Country President for Ireland, Schneider Electric

A net zero future must align to the aims of Industry 4.0, which promises a digital revolution in industry, transformed through technologyenabled efficiency, automation and connectivity. To flourish, there must be a digital relationship between manufacturing businesses and their
The same principles apply to Electricity 4.0. It is already accepted that electricity is the fastest route to cleaner, smarter, more efficient energy, the best vector for decarbonisation. Electricity 4.0 describes the convergence of digital and electric at scale, driving innovations and efficiency, a fundamental shift in how we use, save, and distribute energy. When electricity meets digital, it becomes controlled, visible, connected, and smarter – delivering more and wasting less. Global management consultancy McKinsey estimates we can reduce about 85% of the emissions we need to cut to reach net zero in Europe using existing technologies. The global climate change crisis cannot be controlled if we don’t know where we are wasting energy – we can’t fix what we don’t know. In our experience, energy costs can typically be reduced by between 10% and 30% and maintenance costs between 30% and 50% across smart factories and smart distribution centres.
The intervening years have proven challenging for the industry worldwide, with manufacturers and life sciences suppliers struggling to augment production levels to meet a growing and shifting demand. The realisation of the strategy within such tight timelines seems daunting. Alongside macroeconomic challenges, industry is also grappling with the imperative to reduce carbon emissions and meet the government’s commitment to a 51% reduction in emissions by the end of this decade, and net zero emissions by no later than 2050.
supply chain, partners, and customers, as well as site-specific innovation. All this can only be fuelled by clean, green electricity that empowers industrial innovation without compromising emissions targets.
In 2019, Ireland’s Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation laid out its Industry 4.0 Strategy: a vision that by 2025 Ireland will be a ‘competitive, innovation-driven manufacturing hub at the frontier of the fourth industrial revolution and the forefront of Industry 4.0 development and adoption.’
Electricity 4.0 - the pièce de résistance for a net zero Ireland
Across the world, we are seeing more and more smart technologies used by business – particularly manufacturers to improve productivity. Internet of Things connected devices and cloud infrastructure transform inefficient production lines into nextgeneration smart factories. Industry 4.0 technologies now facilitate communication between devices, control systems and cloud data
Achieving Industry 4.0 will require a simultaneous revolution in energy. At Schneider Electric, we see Electricity 4.0 as an essential tool for a new industrial era. Electricity 4.0 and industry go hand in hand – together they will ensure Ireland maintains its position as a competitive manufacturing hub. Not only this – but it can give Ireland the platform to demonstrate best practice while also setting the standard for green innovation through clean, digitally enabled energy efficiency.
Industry 4.0 can only reach its true potential through a revolution in electricity

The Grid of the Future is the key to decarbonise

in Ireland have not realised the potential of fully utilising it to digitise their operations. To be competitive in today’s hyper-competitive market, manufacturers must adopt the latest innovative products more creatively. At the same time, safeguarding the environment through new policies and solutions and investing in technology will ensure we remain on track to achieving ambitious net zero goals.
journey demands complete visibility of emissions. This can only be achieved by investment in smart technologies, which provide insight and data that, in turn, streamline operations while empowering intelligent electrical infrastructure decisions. Effective power management, through connected technologies, brings together the principles of Electricity 4.0 to deliver the aims of Industry 4.0 and Net Zero. Electricity 4.0 is the here and now. Yet, many organisations and manufacturers
Net Zero continues apace, this new approach is essential to support the industry 4.0 revolution.
We know that embracing Electricity 4.0 is vital for decarbonisation. At Schneider Electric, we use data, automation, and digital solutions to decarbonise the grid and create what we call the Grid of the Future - integrating renewable energy and distributed energy resources into the grid. Smart solutions enable businesses and end consumers to manage their energy more efficiently and effectively, balancing out increased demand without the need for massive increases in spending and grid
Despite being one of the fastest ways to reduce consumption, energy efficiency is often overlooked but is vital to improving productivity and decarbonisation. To capitalise on efficiency, manufacturers must be able to quickly and easily measure and track energy use to drive proactive reduction strategies. However, our research suggests that just 29% of organisations have started measuring energy use and identifying energy waste. Just a third have mapped their current carbon footprint, while one in six has not started mapping carbon emissions. Reducing the amount of energy waste in production lines, buildings, and transportation through digitisation must be part of the Net Zero energy strategy. After all, the cleanest watt is the one that never needs to be
Thegenerated.decarbonisation
Of course, it is not just about ensuring efficiency within existing models. Electrification for Industry 4.0 must incorporate next-generation power supplies such as EV Chargers, Smart Meters and Microgrids. As the race to
Schneiderreinforcements.Electric has been connecting the dots to empower our customers and partners to make better-informed advancements in sustainability. We support optimisable bi-directional, decentralised energy flows from battery storage and microgrids for greater energy efficiency. Decarbonising the grid is vital to make a change at a significant scale, at the pace required. We believe the accelerated adoption of Electricity 4.0 to power innovative digital technologies will ensure industry can spearhead a green recovery whilst becoming more profitable and productive in the future – putting Ireland back on the manufacturing map.

The upgrade will help to more effectively transfer power to the east of the country and distribute it within the electricity network in Kildare, Meath and surrounding counties. It will also help to facilitate the integration of renewable energy on the grid by strengthening the network and help meet the growing demand for electricity in the region.

The project has identified a best performing route option which will avoid villages and the town centres of Kilcock, Clane, Prosperous and Sallins.
EirGrid’s key objective is to avoid impacts to communities where possible, and the route was chosen as it is the least disruptive to communities and has the earliest project completion date compared to previously proposed routes. This point of the project was reached with the input of local businesses, communities, landowners, stakeholders and members of the public, along with a dedicated project team carrying out detailed assessments and consultation.
EirGrid has a challenging role to play in leading the secure transition to an electricity grid powered by renewable energy.
Every minute of every hour the grid is transporting energy from where it is generated to where it is needed, powering the economy, heating homes via the distribution network, and ensuring local economies thrive.
The national electricity grid operator needs to add more energy from renewable sources to the power system over the next eight years to meet the Government target of up to 80% of electricity coming from renewable sources by Achieving2030.
This is a hugely significant milestone and a critical step in the decarbonisation of the electricity sector on the island of Ireland. It marks the culmination of an elevenyear programme of work by EirGrid and its partner SONI in Northern Ireland, as well as by stakeholders from right across the industry.
Developing projects such as the Kildare-Meath Grid Upgrade will contribute towards achieving Ireland’s 2030 goals, but the ambition to reach these, and the transition to net zero carbon emissions by 2050 will not be without Balancingchallenge.
through the recent Shaping Our Electricity Future roadmap, which came from a comprehensive public consultation in 2021, EirGrid is planning 40 new grid infrastructure projects, representing a total investment of over €1bn.
EirGrid will continue to focus on its role in transforming the power system for future generations to ensure that the electricity system and the market make its contribution to achieving a decarbonised society.
Again, it is with this grid development approach that the Kildare-Meath Grid Upgrade project focuses heavily on minimising disruption to people and businesses along the project

is not just committed to developing world-leading infrastructure through its capability and resources, but to leaving a positive legacy in communities after project
The Ireland and Northern Ireland power system is the first in the world to reach this level, overcoming major technical challenges associated with integrating electricity from wind farms, solar farms and interconnectors that link it with other countries.
To put the achievement into context, wind, solar and interconnectors have very different technical characteristics to conventional fossil-fuel powered generation. This creates challenges in maintaining the stability and security of the power system forcing EirGrid to limit the amount of variable renewables on the grid in the past.
be achieved through the Kildare-Meath Grid Upgrade Community Forum which acts as a consultative body to EirGrid throughout the project’s development.
engagement with members of the public, landowners, local authorities and Kildare Chamber, EirGrid understands what needs to be considered while developing the project, and, how it can deliver meaningful community benefit to the area where infrastructure is EirGridhosted.

EirGrid had previously imposed a cap of 70% on the amount of variable renewable generation on the grid at a given time. This has now been raised to 75% following a successful 11-month trial.
This roadmap will continue to be reviewed in order to meet the demands on the country’s electricity supply and to support the growing economy. The final roadmap contains a blended approach, looking at grid development from an economic, technical, social acceptance and deliverability perspective and seeks to minimise impacts on communities, while still delivering on the renewable ambitions.
Understanding the crucial need to take on more renewables onto the grid, and having a central part to play in delivering on Ireland’s clean energy ambitions, EirGrid is pushing the boundaries of the possible integration of world-leading volumes of electricity from renewable sources onto the power system, while carefully managing security of supply.
17 ISSUE 7 - September 2022
It is the belief that through sustained partnerships, such as Kildare Chamber and other stakeholders, solutions that are ambitious and innovative will be identified and will help EirGrid lead the secure transition of Ireland’s energy sector.
Asinfrastructure.evidenced
Pushing those boundaries has resulted in three quarters of the electricity flowing on the electricity grid at any point in time now coming from variable renewable sources, such as wind, following the completion of a ground-breaking project by EirGrid.
The grid operator is committed to leading Ireland to a cleaner energy future, while maintaining a safe, secure and reliable supply of electricity.
It is with this world-leading ambition, that EirGrid continues its work planning for the future of a cleaner, stronger and more flexible electricity grid. This ambition sees EirGrid also strive to get the most out of the grid through new technologies and to develop new and necessary grid
the security of supply concerns Ireland faces, along with competitiveness/cost and increased generation from renewables and other low carbon technologies are factors EirGrid is acutely aware of.

IN THE HOT SEAT with Martin Heydon TD

I have a young family, 4 small kids so they take up a lot of my spare time. I enjoy family time with them, making the most of our great outdoor amenities in Kildare. I also have a huge interest in all types of Sport from GAA, to horse racing, rugby, and golf which I try to watch as much as I can.
How do you feel the business community is doing in the County?
Martin is a native of South Kildare living outside Kilcullen. He attended Crookstown N.S., Cross & Passion College Kilcullen and Kildalton Agricultural College. He is married to Bríanne and they have 4 children.
What is your vision for Kildare?

• Completion of the Ring Road for Athy and second bridge for Newbridge;
Top 3 priorities of Kildare at the moment?
Farming is a major part of my life. As a child before school, after school, morning and evening, we farmed. We invested, built a few sheds, and tried to grow the enterprise from a small base. My mother instilled in me a passion for farming that has stayed with me to this day. Being an active farmer, going to the mart, having to deal with my local co-op about the price of fertiliser, and being aware of what my contractor costs are going to be this year, really does help me with meetings with officials in Agriculture House because I have that very real sense of the way farmers think.
GAA was my passion growing up, but my skills were not always evident on the pitch. At one AGM I was nominated as PRO at the age of 22 and that led to 9 years of active involvement in GAA administration as I move from PRO to Secretary of my local GAA club. I loved my time in those roles which saw huge development take place at our pitch and grounds. It also taught me many lessons about politics, and I learned a huge
• My top priority is that we continue to catch up on services and housing for our county that has seen a rapid growth in population in recent times;
• Bringing more jobs opportunities to South Kildare such as the recent Diageo announcement for Newbridge.
Businesses in Kildare have had a very difficult few years from Covid to international war to now increased energy and other costs. Many businesses are feeling the pressure from increases in the cost of living, but they have gained a resilience after Covid that is impressive and proves that when supported by Government they can prosper. They are also well supported by a strong county wide Chamber.
How did you get interested in politics?
I see huge potential in Kildare given our location, our road infrastructure, and a great pool of local talent. I work to see this developed further, ensuring that Kildare continues to be a great place to live, work, visit and to raise a family.
Quick fire round:
With a long background in farming, in July 2020 he was appointed as Minister of State with special responsibility for Research and Development, Farm Safety and New Market Development at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
Martin recently sat down with Sinéad to discuss his priorities for Kildare and his vision for the County.

Martin Heydon TD is Fine Gael TD for Kildare South constituency. His political career began on Kildare County Council in 2009 where he represented Athy and served as party whip.
While not active, my family were always interested in politics, and I always remember the buzz when Alan Dukes would call to the house around election time. My grandfather Timmy Fennin would have been active with Fine Gael in Athy and brought him around to us canvassing.
In 2011, he was elected at his first attempt to Dáil Eireann and subsequently re-elected in 2016 and 2020. Martin served as Chairman of the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party from 2016 – 2020.
What are your interests outside of politics?
Is your business suffering difficulties in filling senior roles, as the Irish economy approaches full employment? Could your business benefit from an experienced, high calibre professional who can start immediately and make a real difference, delivering hands-on, no-nonsense support on a short- or long-term basis?
