GRIT AND DETERMINATION: HOFFMAN’S FIGHTING SPIRIT

By Ruthie Laroche For the County Courier “I’m on my feet for most of the day at work, but it’s great,” explained Jordan Hoffman, who was recently hired by the elegant Inn at Erlowest on the shores of Lake George.

The Queen-Anne Stone Castle hosts elaborate, lakeside weddings year round, and although she wasn’t planning on the move, Hoffman has enjoyed the change of scenery.

After graduating from Clarkson University in the spring, Hoffman fulfilled one of the goals on her bucket list and moved to the Big Apple to look for a job and see just what city life was all about.

“I didn’t have a timeframe on when I would move to New York City, but I have an aunt in Jersey City who I had visited growing up, and I loved that environment.

I wanted to live there, and decided after I graduated from college that I needed to do it then,” said Hoffman.

The doors to the city opened when a cousin of Hoffman’s, who lives in the Bronx, told her she could stay with her.

“I packed up my whole life and loaded it into my 2001 Honda Accord,” said Hoffman with a laugh, “I moved in with her on New Year’s Eve.” Hoffman grew up in Fairfax, Vermont, where she attended high school at Bellows Free Academy.

In the spring of 2014, she was enjoying the usual senior year milestones and looking forward to heading off to Clarkson University in the fall.

At 18, she was eager to spread her wings, see some of the world outside of Franklin County, and take the next step on her journey.

The future was brimming with promise.

March gave way to April and, in the midst of plans for senior prom and graduation, Hoffman began to notice little symptoms that were starting to turn to more lingering problems; she decided to visit a doctor to try and get to the bottom of things.

“In the beginning, I had no idea what was going on, I was going to the doctor once a week and seeing specialists,” said Hoffman, “but we couldn’t figure out what it was.”

“I was on antibiotics, antifungals, I was having biopsies and chest x-rays, and being tested for everything under the sun.”

After one of many visits, a surgeon Hoffman had been consulting with told the family he wanted to do surgery the next day.

They took one lymph node, tested it, and found that it was malignant.

After four months of visits to doctors and specialists, the Hoffman family received devastating news. Jordan had stage three, Anaplastic T-Cell Lymphoma.

Anaplastic large cell lymphoma

(ALCL) is a rare type of nonHodgkin lymphoma (NHL) that is more common in the young than the old. The disease develops when white blood cells called T-cells become abnormal.

Most often these abnormal T-cells begin to build up in the lymph nodes, but they can affect other parts of the body as well.

Usually, the first symptom a person will notice is a painless swelling in the neck, armpit or groin. Other symptoms follow, such as loss of appetite and fatigue.

Some people may also have night sweats, fevers or weight loss. Often the symptoms depend on where the lymphoma is in the body.

By the time the Hoffmans got the results of the PET scan in August, the oncologists had found out the T-cells were in Jordan’s groin, abdomen, neck, and spine.

The stage three diagnoses for Hoffman was based on where the cancer was located; above and below her abdomen, and the doctors explained that some forms of the disease were more dangerous than others.

“They didn’t show us the first scan until after the cancer was gone,” Hoffman recalled, “that was good because it looked terrifying.”

Oddly, while the rest of the family was shocked and unsure of what the future held, Hoffman shared that the news hit her in an unusual way.

“I was almost relieved because at least we knew what it was and we had steps to take to fix it. It felt like it gave me something to do about it.”

It may have taken months to get to the bottom of the illness, but the medical staff serving Hoffman wasted no time in beginning treatment. As it is for everyone who faces a battle with cancer, there were many important decisions to be made.

Hoffman’s age and standing in life presented her with one choice she never thought she’d have to make at 18.

“There were a few things that went on between treatment and diagnosis,” Hoffman explained calmly, “I had to decide if I wanted to have eggs harvested because chemo can make you sterile.”

The thought of a childless future didn’t faze Hoffman when she first talked with the medical staff; there were so many other things pressing for her attention, but she decided to visit the fertility clinic.

“I remember being in the clinic; they had given me a few pamphlets with my different options, and I remember telling them I wasn’t going to do it, but on the way home my mom asked me to think about it.”

There was no time to waste, but the consequences of some of the choices had the potential to be lifechanging.

“I had one day to make that choice, and I decided to harvest

Courtesy Photo the eggs. I knew I wanted kids someday and that changed my mind. I’m so grateful that I chose to do that. I don’t know if I will need them, but I have them if I do,” said Hoffman.

The treatments were not easy, and the timeframe was short.

“I ended up having to be on fertility drugs, which made me miserable. At the end, they put you through menopause which shuts down your reproductive system for the duration.”

Hoffman also had a port put into her chest for chemo, and she had to have bone marrow drawn since the PET scan doesn’t necessarily show cancer in a patient’s bones.

Eight days after she learned about her cancer, Hoffman began her chemotherapy treatment, and

because of the Stage 3 diagnosis, things were intense from the start.

“I would start chemo on Monday, with my one oral chemo drug - Prednisone- for five days at a time. I would then go to the hospital for three days in a row for IV chemo. On the fourth day I got a shot to help make my body produce more white blood cells,” explained Hoffman, “after that, I’d get two weeks off and then start the process all over again. This went on until Christmas Eve of that year.”

While all the medical procedures were in full swing, Hoffman also had to deal with the reality that her departure to Clarkson would not be in her immediate future.

“I was so angry that I couldn’t go to college, so I enrolled at the

Community College of Vermont that week and took full-time online classes. I’d sit in bed after my chemo and do my work on my laptop,” said Hoffman, “I still can’t believe I did it; I was so tired.”

On December 3rd, Hoffman learned she was cancer-free. The doctors opted to do two extra rounds of Chemo to be safe.

“It was crazy how fast I recovered,” said Hoffman.

On January 5th, just five months after her diagnosis, Hoffman moved to Clarkson for the second semester of the 2014-2015 school year.

“I was excited to get to school; I was so ready! I had friends from high school there, and

CHERISH YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE

Cherish your constitutional right to vote for a Vermont probate judge for a term of four years. Except for assistant judges, whose power and authority have been greatly reduced in recent years, no other judges in Vermont receive their office directly from the electorate.

The probate court has broad original jurisdiction concerning adoptions, wills, trusts, name changes, and the appointment of guardians to name a few. Because of the broad number of issues before them, the judges touch the lives of most people within their districts. Further, because of the nature of the court, citizens can proceed without professional representation.

Because of this close contact with citizens, the demenor of the judge is important. I have known Vaughn Comeau since he began his law practice in Enosburgh. Not only does he have the honesty, knowledge, and experience to assume the role of probate judge, he has the demeanor to run the office effectively with respect for the people who make use o the court’s services.

I urge the citizens of Franklin County to vote for Vaugh Comeau for Probate Judge.

While going door to door to get votes, Cindy told a voter that Felisha Leffler was anti-gay, which is an absolute lie. This isn’t hearsay, because this happened in my family. Cindy is grasping at straws because I think she is employing scare tactics and lies with elderly voters. Cindy has lost touch with reality and has voted yes for 69 million dollars in tax increases. if you want to make Vermont an affordable place to live, you can not vote for nearly every tax bill that hits the floor. Felisha wants to lower taxes so more young people will stay in Vermont. Last year Cindy Weed voted YES on gun control (S.55).

Cindy Weed also voted YES on H.233 which makes act 250 more difficult for property owner development as well as subdivisions.

A bill to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour was also a YES vote from Cindy Weed which would increase the cost of labor and harm Vermont businesses and the overall economy.

A TIME FOR CIVILITY Editor’s Note: This commentary was written by Senator Randy Brock, who currently serves as one of Franklin County’s two senators.

He is also seeking re-election.

I don’t know about you, but I hate to pick up a newspaper or watch the evening news.

National politics has become a national embarrassment.

The polarization between parties and personalities has become intolerable. Washington, DC has become gridlocked and the two

parties can barely agree on the time and date, much less on any substantive issues.

There was a time, not that long ago, when political leaders were people we looked up to. They didn’t call each other names, didn’t lie with every claim and didn’t reflexively oppose everything the other side said or did. They recognized that issues were not always black or white, but often tinged with gray. They listened to the other person and worked to

voters in Montpelier. She listens to people and is responsive to their concerns. She knows how to get things done in the legislative process and is respected by her peers. She has worked for farmers and all working families in Franklin County.

I urge you to vote for Cindy this November.

and I am proud to say he is a friend of mine. I first met Tom when I started working part time for the Franklin County Sherriff’s Office.

Then a few years later Tom came on as a Deputy Game Warden while I was also working as a Deputy Warden for the Fish and Wildlife Department. We worked many weekend and nights together which consisted of lots of hours sitting and talking while we were watching the fields at night. It was a great time to get to know someone and what their values were. Tom and I shared many cases together.

I was always impressed on how thorough and professional Tom was when we were investigating the complaints. Everybody was treated the same and everyone were considered innocent until they were proven guilty not matter how bad it looked sometimes.

Thomas comes from a military family and had always taken to heart, two of the most important words in the military and those words are Integrity and Honesty.

If you were to look up the words INTERGITY and HONESTY, you will see the name “Thomas Oliver” Tom has liven by these words his whole life and continues to do the same today as a Captain in the Franklin County Sherriff’s Office.

Thomas has the full endorsement and support of the Deputies that work for and with Tom. Who better to know what Thomas is truly made of then the people he spends his time with and supervises every day and is also endorsed by the outgoing Sherriff Robert Norris.

I am hoping that when everyone votes by Nov 6 th they will vote for only the best local candidates running for the position regardless of what party is by their name !

We can’t afford to have the wrong people elected just because they are running under the label of the the party we believe in on the national level! We are a small state, and we must all work together to do what is best for our state and each other.

Ever since the debate between Felicia Leffler and Cindy Weed I have been taking an informal survey of people that I meet in the various places I go in town, because I am really curious. It’s just a one question survey: Will you vote for Cindy Weed?

Those who have said they will vote for her have answered in one of two ways: 1) They’ve known her for a long time, so are friends with her.

2) They want free stuff.

My response to #1 is folks, this isn’t a popularity contest. My response to #2 is there’s no such thing as free stuff. Somebody has to pay for the free stuff. It’s better to get a job or be an entrepreneur to be able to afford the things we want rather than waiting for a handout. Cindy wants to go back to Montpelier for one reason. As she has been heard to say, she needs a job.

I received a political mailer from candidate Felisha Leffler that stated she had “extensive” experience with policy creation. I attended the debate in Enosburg between her and incumbent State Representative Cindy Weed.

There, I asked Ms. Leffler more about her policy making and writing policy experience, only to learn that her “extensive” experience comes only from Political Science classes in college and a campaign outside Vermont.

Her response sums up one of the many glaring differences between her and our current representative, Cindy Weed, in terms of both experience and political values.

Probate court is often referred to as “Peoples’ Court”. And the people of Franklin County need a probate judge they can trust to be there when needed. Bob Farrar promises to be there full-time-unlike his opponent, who intends to continue practicing law. That is a significant point! Often, one needs the services of a probate judge at the worst of times – when someone has died, when heirs don’t agree, when a loved one can no longer oversee their money or themselves. Courier on the Road Donna and Glenn Deming received 8.12.18 Donna and Glenn Deming, enjoying the County Courier while on their third Alaskan trip. They rented an RV in Anchorage and traveled 3,400 miles over 5 weeks.

Here they’re visiting Kennicott/McCarthy, Alaska located about 8 driving hours from Anchorage.

The two settlements originated by the Kennicott Mines Company in 1906. Interestingly, the mines company is spelled with an “e” while the glacier, river and community are spelled with an “i” after naturalist Robert Kennicott.

The mining town of Kennicott perched on the side of Bonaza Ridge above the wide and rocky Kennicott Glacier moraine, housed the mine offices, homes, a hosptital, school and a movie theatre.

Today the 14-story Kenneott Mine mill and concentrator building towers over the narrow gravel road through ‘town’ which includes historic structures such as the old hospital and assay office, the restored recreation center, some private buildings and Kennicott Glacier Lodge. There are also several buildings undergoing restoration.

McCarthy, Alaska, .5 miles away, has a population of 32 and an elevation of 1,531 ft. Back in the day, it sprang up to provide miners with more housing, saloons, a newspaper, stores, hotels, restaurants and a red-light district. A number of the pioneer structures have been restored or rebuilt and currently house a variety of businesses serving the influx of summer visitors and the small year around homesteaders.

Today, there is no central water, sewer, or electrical systems in McCarty/Kennicott. Generators provide power and water is pumped from wells or hauled by hand. Outhouses and septic systems are used.There are no state schools and the nearest health clinic is in Chitina, 2 1/2 hours away. The mail plane arrives twice weekly from Glennallen. Cell phone service is iffy.

The area’s remoteness, historic buildings, and magnificent scenery draw an increasing number of visitors every year.

a large degree on the relationship you have with the coach,” Hart explained, “There are some coaches you really want to work hard for and others you don’t want to work for at all; that’s true in the classroom as well.”

Hart explained that any time there’s an opportunity to build a relationship with a kid it provides a chance to build mutual friendship and respect.

“That puts you in a better position to get that kid to work harder for you and for themselves.”

As a teacher, Hart sees the struggles and successes of his students in the classroom and on the soccer field.

“One of the great things about sports is that the rewards are more immediately tangible. I have kids in geometry class who work hard and get good grades. A good grade is a reward, but students don’t always see the value of the work they’ve done, how they’ve improved as a person, or as a thinker as a result of that work. In soccer, you may have a kid who’s worked all summer and brought their skills and endurance up and they see that right away.”

Being able to deal with both success and failure is another big part of sports. Hart explained that an athlete who is well supported can learn to respond to failure in a

coached a girls’ varsity soccer in 2004 and 2005. After his move to northern Vermont, he spent his time establishing himself as a teacher.

“When I got back into teaching, I knew I wanted to continue coaching, but it was really a matter of timing. This is the first year I’ve felt I had the time to coach, and when the position came open it was a no-brainer opportunity.”

Coaching and teaching is a mix that Hart feels offers excellent opportunities.

“Coaching provides a different window into a kid and a kind of different relationship. It’s more informal when you’re on the field, and you get to see different sides of them than you do in the classroom,” said Hart.

Already, Hart has enjoyed the shift he’s seen in some of his students.

“It’s the most fun when you have kids that aren’t necessarily as comfortable in the classroom who come into their own on the athletic field. Sometimes it’s almost a personality shift because they are in an environment they are more comfortable in.”

Relationships, in Hart’s view, are key to both teaching and coaching.

“I think the experience you have playing a sport can be dictated to

By Ruthie Laroche For the County Courier The Enosburg’s girls’ varsity soccer team welcomed a lot of new faces for the 2018 season. Eleven girls graduated last year, and the coaching staff also stepped down.

Jason Hart, who teaches math at Enosburg High School came on as the team’s new coach.

“Teaching is the one thing I’ve always wanted to do,” said Hart, “My father was a teacher and a coach, and I’ve always loved education.”

Hart recalled that positive experiences he had in school played a big part in his career choice.

“I had teachers who had a significant impact on me. I struggled with a lot of things many kids struggle with, and I had some teachers that really made me feel valued and gave me confidence I might not have had otherwise,” explained Hart, “Teaching is a job that gives you a chance to make a difference in people’s lives.”

Hart, who grew up in West Rutland played soccer, basketball, and baseball as a kid. He went on to play one year of soccer at St. Mary’s College in Maryland.

“Soccer was my passion,” Hart said with a smile.

“This season has been one of my favorites. We have come a long way from the beginning of the season. I think Saturday’s game was one of our best; we all wanted to win so much.”

Senior David Antillon spoke of the characteristics that made this team hard to beat once they got rolling.

“Our team does a great job scoring early and often. We have a lot of speed in virtually every position. That said, we don’t have a lot of height, and I think we’ve learned how to use it to our advantage.”

As Enosburg goalie, senior Evan Cota pointed out, it didn’t come easily.

“The win was a battle, it started out with us getting out in front early,” said Cota, noting that the Hornets fell behind, “It was a hard fought second half with them coming back. My mid-fielders and backs were able to keep their cool and play hard in the second half to keep it under control.”

The boys knew they were approaching the 57 goal mark, but they were unsure if they’d be able to pull it off after a low scoring game against Oxbow.

The 4 to 3 victory over Winooski saw Logan Jette, Kenyon Deso, Hunter Choiniere, and Dylan Pattee all score for Enosburg.

Enosburg Athletic Director, Chris Brigham, spoke highly of the efforts of this year’s group of boys, and the longstanding tradition of excellence that Swainbank has brought to the Hornets’ soccer program.

“It was a thrilling win! The kids played their tails off against a very talented team. I told Randy after the game that I thought this year was one of his years of coaching since I’ve been here,” said Brigham, “to think they started out 0-3-1 and to finish 9-4-1 is a testament to the improvement that they have made over the year.

Enosburg boys’ soccer coach Randy Swainbank and his team may have started the season with a three-loss losing streak, but things turned around quickly.

Winooski ended up with the Mountain League title this fall, but not before their unbeaten season ended in a loss to Enosburg on Saturday.

The game was also Enosburg’s Senior Game and the four goals that handed Winooski their first loss tied this year’s Hornets with Swainbanks’ team-high goal record.

“The record is a 57 goal regular season which was set in 2011,” Swainbank explained, “I’m not sure if it’s a school record but it is the highest goal total in my 26 years, 22 here at Enosburg.”

Gabby Caforia, the last of the four Caforia kids to go through Enosburg High School, has the campus to herself this year after the graduation of her brother Casey in the spring of 2018.

“It’s different not having any of them here and I miss them.

There are times I feel that I have big shoes to fill both academically and athletically. My brothers were such good people, and I’m trying to follow in their footsteps.”

Hannah Burns, who is also a multi-sport athlete, shared her thoughts on some of the lessons she’s learned in her time playing in high school.

“Sports are different than school because of the crowd and your

teammates. When things go well everyone can see it, and when they don’t go well it’s easy to get down on yourself because you have a team that’s counting on you to help push everyone forward and get the win. You learn that mistakes happen.”

Burns noted that there’s a very positive aspect to the team atmosphere.

“With the team, you have communication and support to help you through your failures. We also have our coach. We’ve looked up to him as a teacher, but now we also look up to him as a coach; he’s always looking out for us and supporting us. He makes sure we always have our heads up and that we only say positive things on the field,” said Hannah.

Caforia agreed with Burns.

“With sports, you have to have a growth mindset to know you can get better with your skills.

Coach Hart reminds us that we always need to be positive and

say positive things. It’s really motivating because it betters us as athletes and as people. We are learning how to adjust our thinking and how to treat people well. It’s not just about soccer--it’s about life lessons.”

The girls all agreed that Hart has brought a tangible presence of positivity and encouragement to the team.

Dash, who’s playing as the fulltime goalie for the first time in her high school career, has had a lot to take in this year.

“Ali has done a great job all year--taking it upon herself to put in extra work to improve her skills. I admire her for that and she should be proud of what she’s accomplished,” said Hart.

All the changes the team underwent this year took some time and a lot of adjustments, but the girls have steadily gained confidence and strength.

“We’ve really improved our game since the beginning of the

Elle Remillard made her first varsity appearance in goal for us in the second half and secured the shutout.”

Both on and off the field, the girls have felt Hart’s presence as they’ve made their way through the season.

“Mr. Hart recognizes when someone is down and needs help and he makes sure everyone on the team feels welcome and wanted,” said Caforia.

As the season comes to a close, Hart reflected on the months he’s had to work with the girls.

“It’s been a privilege to coach this team; we’re always learning things in practices and games; there are soccer lessons and teamwork lessons we can take away. They’ve been a very kind, supportive, and gracious group,” said Hart, noting that he’s had plenty to learn as a coach this year.

As much as he loves winning

games, Hart sees value in the entire experience.

“There will always be people who disagree with your approach, but at the end of the day we’re all trying to have an experience together. If that’s stressful and pressure-packed, then that’s not good for anybody. I want us all to accomplish something as a group and get along while we do it,” said Hart.

Growing up as an athlete, Hart understands the connection kids have with sports and the pressure many feel as they compete.

“There’s something to be said for pushing yourself, and sports is an arena where we can push our limits. At the end of the day, it’s just like geometry class: it’s another opportunity for us to learn some skills that we can take into the world and use to be caring, productive community members.

Soccer is just one way we can practice doing that.”

These kids are victims and must be treated as such. All resources should be used to protect them.

We also need to focus on developing community activities and centers for our youth. YMCA type facilities have proven to help kids develop the proper social skills needed to go on with a successful and productive life. The programs offered by such facilities also help to instill the desires to become involved in the community.

A lot has been done over the last five years to stem this epidemic.

Sufficient treatment centers have been opened statewide to virtually eliminate the wait time to receive treatment when an individual decides to seek medically assisted help. The medical community has worked to tightly control the over prescription of opioid pain products.

The community at large has been educated to the dire consequences of opioid addictions. We, as parents, as friends, as a society, need to act as role models and educators to our young children that experimentation with certain drugs, such as opioid, will lead to deadly consequences.

As a member of the legislature, I will push for more public service messaging and increased education in our schools about the dangers of drug experimentation.

The recent article about a young woman, who died after fighting this addiction over ten years made it clear how one casual trial, at a party, could lead to a life of addiction.

by Executive Order, created the Opioid Coordination Council with “a mission to strengthen and expand Vermont’s response to the opioid crisis through prevention, treatment, recovery and enforcement, while improving coordination across all state and local entities with a role in addressing the crisis.”

Vermont has been favorably credited for taking these steps and for funding them. Some point to our success as a national model for combating addiction.

Yet, the underlying problem of addiction to powerfully addictive substances will not be solved for Vermonters “once and for all” until we better understand why young people and adults are turning to drug use in the first place. We all understand the recovering patient

who uses opioids for pain relief and finds himself/herself addicted, but that does not explain away the system that is dealing more than 8,000 opioid addiction patients.

Vermont is on the right track for easing the crisis, and if elected, I would do whatever I could to encourage prevention and avert the terrible cost in human suffering that comes with addiction.

Barbara Murphy (I)* (bsmffxvt@yahoo.com) Strides have been made to battle the opioid epidemic since Governor Shumlin’s address. One of Governor Scott’s first actions in Office was to establish the Opioid Coordination Council through Executive Order 09-17. To quote from that Executive Order, “all Vermonters must play an important role in helping to eradicate this scourge from our State”. The Executive order identifies a three pronged approach which includes reducing the demand, ensuring access to recovery opportunities and reducing the supply of prescription opioids.

The Northwest Medical Center is in the forefront of the fight with its CEO Jill Berry Bowen serving on the State’s Opioid Coordination Council.

New prescription guidelines that restrict the number and use of opioids like OxyCotin for pain relief will reduce the number of people put at risk for becoming addicted. The Howard Center has been a community resource in Vermont for 150 years and continues in the Hub and Spokes model of recovery. The opening of the BAART Hub in St. Albans has allowed Franklin County residents the opportunity to enter a treatment program without being placed on a wait list and to access a program that doesn’t require a prohibitive commute. It is critical that these programs be supported by appropriate funding.

Law enforcement continues to handle the crimes that are symptoms of the disease while our medical and social institutions are taking steps toward the cure. In shining a light on the scourge of addiction and providing treatment for it as the disease it is, the curtain of stigma is being lifted and many individuals are seeing a path to recovery.

When we look back over the years, 91% of deaths involved people with histories of prescription opiates.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, approximately 29% of patients prescribed opioids for chronic pain misuse them, as many as 12% will develop an opioid use disorder, and 80% of people who use heroin first misused prescription opioids. The source of the epidemic in our state is apparent.

As I walk door to door and talk to my neighbors, they share stories of how their siblings, friends, children, parents, and even grandmothers have developed opioid use disorders. And many of them also share stories of hope about what’s working for their loved ones; we need to expand on these such as the hub and spoke model, BAART, and community justice centers, ensure people in correctional facilities have prompt access to medicationassisted treatment, and continue to limit and monitor prescriptions while ensuring Narcan is readily available.

These services do not come without a cost. From 2012-2017 Vermont spent $70 million on opiate treatment programs. This doesn’t factor in the other costs we’ve born as a society such as loss of human life, loss of economic productivity, and the costs of putting people in jail (about $70k per person a year).

To end the epidemic we need to continue to provide and expand on what’s working and hold manufacturers responsible for the associated costs. This includes settlements from lawsuits such as the current one against Purdue Pharma (who knew the risks of OxyContin but didn’t fully disclose them to physicians) and taxing opioid producers. At a time when Big Pharma is making killer profits off of death and destruction to our community, we are left— as taxpayers—footing the ever

In that time I’ve seen St. Albans come together, making public investments that encourage businesses to invest and families to live here in our community. I was serving as State Representative when Gov. Shumlin gave his historic State of the State about opiates. St. Albans was already out ahead of many other communities in recognizing the challenges that come from substance use disorders – the crime that results from desperation and the overdoses that have taken the lives of three people close to me.

It’s been over two decades since Purdue Pharma lied to doctors and the FDA about the safety of OxyContin. The legislature should hold these pharmaceutical manufacturers responsible, taxing their profits to pay for the treatment and recovery of Vermonters who first started using because they became addicted to a legal prescription. Our hospitals and other providers are doing a much better job of keeping legal prescriptions of addictive opioids to a minimum, but the

legislature should remain vigilant about over-prescription.

We should continue to invest in evidence-based treatment, like the hub and spoke model that reduce the harm caused by opiate use disorders and give people a chance at success in recovery. The legislature can continue to support court diversion and restorative justice practices from our community policing in St. Albans to the drug court model.

We need to stop incarcerating people with substance use disorders wherever treatment in community is an option. Prisons are too expensive and make the problem worse – especially out of state for-profit prisons.

We didn’t get into the opiate crisis overnight, but there is hope that we can save the lives of our children by educating people about the dangers of opiates, offering treatment that is proven and effective, and asking those who got us into this mess to pay to get us out.

The Man Behind the Badge For those of you who have never met Tom, I feel compelled to give you a glimpse about the man he is – a family man and trustworthy member of the community.

As a caring and supportive husband of 25 years and loving father to our teenage son and daughter, Tom brings safety and security to our home and fun, laughter and adventure to our family. He is the supportive Dad in the crowd at school concerts, sporting events and other family activities. As a father of teenage children, he knows first-hand the issues and challenges facing families and youth within our community.

Tom is quick to respond to those in need, having served in the community as a first responder. He’s a sportsman willing to share his knowledge with others and has worked in the community as a Deputy Game Warden in protecting the State’s resources. He’s provided many kids a safe first-time hunting experience and has been a volunteer coach in the Junior Olympic Archery Development program.

The decision to run for Sheriff was not an easy one. It wasn’t a political one. It was simply about doing what he thought was necessary for the continued success of the Office and its employees that he had seen grow over the last 20 years with the full support of his entire family behind him.

The increased awareness of the problem of over prescribing and use of opiates has been important for the medical community, pharmacies and state agencies. The Governor and the legislature have worked on studies and legislation that highlights the dangers of opiate use and abuse. This effort must continue. The opiate epidemic evolved into a heroin epidemic with the heroin combined with fentanyl.

This is now a deadly epidemic of illegal drugs that are often sold at a huge profit by drug dealers, some from out of state, who arrange to bring large amounts of heroin and other illegal drugs into Vermont.

A complication is the exchange of drugs for guns from Vermont.

Buying guns for another person is a “straw man” purchase by buyers who can pass the background checks. It is against the law. We recently saw arrests for this activity as a result of the Street Crimes Unit investigation of the St. Albans Police Department.

Out hub and spoke system of Medical Assisted Treatment is considered a success for Vermonters trying to treat their addiction. There is some criticism that it simply replaces one drug with another drug; however, it does allow people to get treatment and counseling while working toward sobriety. Many of us have personal experience with family, friends and neighbors who have suffered from this epidemic.

It is heartbreaking to see productive young people suffer and die from this addiction. There is no simple easy solution to this problem. We need to educate, treat and promote awareness of the dangers of this epidemic and continue to support those who suffer from its impact.

control throughout the U.S. Usage of opioids and other non-opioid drugs is increasing year after year and Vermont is no exception to these addictions.

One way the legislature can combat all drug usage us through education prevention programs.

When the government was serious about stopping cigarette use among young people, it mandated an education program highlighting the negative health effects of primary and secondary smoke inhalation, including the health risk of developing lung cancer.

The success of those education programs is demonstrated by the low numbers of youth becoming tobacco smokers.

Tackling opioid use in a similar manner should produce similar results. However, given the age range of drug use, multi-tiered appropriate age and grade level programs should be implemented for school students across their 12 years of education. Publicly available adult education programs for is also necessary for those who have become addicted involuntarily, through the process of taking medically prescribed drugs to relieve extreme physical pain or for those, who for other reasons, including perceived escape from emotional issues, misused drugs and became addicted.

With the passage of recreational Marijuana “legalization” last legislative session, the state is sending mixed messages to our youth. Marijuana, which is still a Schedule 1 Classified Drug by Federal law (a felony), can be highly addictive for some people and can be a gateway drug to opioids. It also interferes with the development of normal brain development and intelligence. According to the medical community, the younger the person is exposed to high levels of THC through smoking Marijuana, the greater the brain damage. This “Vermont legal” Marijuana status sends a false message that this substance is harmless.

It has a high potential to be successful in developing drug awareness and the available treatments for both youth and adults.

Shumlin devoted the entire address to the crisis of opioid addiction that was and still is wreaking havoc in our communities, small and large alike. Unfortunately the funding he proposed in his Budget Address two weeks or so later, gave a very meager financial funding increase to combat the problem.

In many if not most cases, a treatment program for addiction will involve an inpatient admission to a residential treatment facility lasting up to 12 to 16 weeks. In some cases maybe even longer with a huge price tag attached. To compound the problem the State does not have large enough bed capacity in state and there is a long waiting list. To treat this problem correctly would involve the construction of treatment facilities to cut the wait time along with the hiring of qualified individuals to staff the facility or facilities. Not a small or inexpensive undertaking.

When you look at this problem, it is not unique to Vermont and is affecting people in every state in the nation. The manufacture, marketing and use of opioids were authorized by the Federal Government through the FDA. In my opinion the Federal Government is responsible for the epidemic of addiction and should step to the plate with a plan and funding to combat and hopefully correct this situation. I will call upon our Congressional Delegation to take action on the Federal level that will give serious level of assistance to the states for this problem.

Giving a safe place for drug abusers to inject opioids would be better for the community then having them do it on the streets. It would also make the drug abuser safer too as they would be injecting drugs in a safe environment with a medical professional present.

Our legislature would save lives by creating safe injection sites. I would also support a bill similar to H.922 which studies levying a tax on opioid manufacturers. This tax will help pay for treatment and recovery programs throughout the state. Opioid manufacturers have partially caused the opioid crisis in Vermont and need to be part of solution when it comes to ending the problem.

With going into my 20th year in the EMS field I’ve dealt a lot with overdose involving opioids. I think the correct answer is someone excepting the fact that they need help. When they come to terms and realize they need help it takes months to get into a facility where help is given. Over the last couple of years we’ve had a couple of different sites open up, one in St. Albans and one in Swanton. We do need more, when someone is in need there shouldn’t be a waiting list.

On board of an ambulance we give patients Narcan, a drug that treats narcotic overdoes. Our local law enforcement officers also carry this drug. Our state has a serious opioid problem facing a lot of Vermonters of all ages. I feel the state has made some ground on this matter, there’s just such a increase in opioids. I feel it’s very important to get more treatment centers opened up. When help is needed and someone excepts and realizes there in need of help, the help should be available and not have to wait for a long period of time. If elected as State Rep I’ll be sure to work with others to get whats best for a persons treatment.

Prohibition of alcohol was passed into law as a result of widespread alcohol abuse but it did not solve the problem. It did give rise to powerful organized crime. Nobody wakes up one day and decides that they want to be addicted to hard drugs. Some people get there because they were prescribed inappropriately strong pain meds, some get there by foolish means, often when they are too young to understand consequences.

One day, we will be able to identify the genes that make somebody more susceptible to addiction. We

already know that trauma increases the likelihood of addiction or selfmedication.

Solutions: * Hold prescribing doctors accountable. *If what I read is true about Purdue covering up and misrepresenting issues with Oxycontin, hold the manufacturer accountable. * We should invest in early childhood programs. For every $1 spent there, we get at least a five-fold return with youngsters more likely to grow into healthy, productive adults. * Make sure young people are supervised and have productive things to do, sports, work, skill-building, positive social opportunities. Afterschool and summer programs, youth centers and technical centers can play roles in keeping youngsters engaged in their lives and communities. * We need an economy that provides real opportunities to make a living, not just bare survival. * We need adequate mental health and addiction prevention/ treatment services, to include inpatient treatment that lasts long enough and same-day treatment for anybody who comes in wanting to get off hard drugs. * We need to remove the stigma of mental health and addiction struggles. Sometimes we need help and there is nothing shameful about asking for that help. It can save or change a life to know that help without judgement is available.

Sending young kids to jail to mix with hardened criminals is not helping. If people are serious we need to spend some of this federal money for programs to help the addict return to a normal life.

Almost everyone knows someone with an addiction problem, no matter what their family or economic situation. We just have to look at the all too common obituaries of young people to see how families are torn apart. Thirty day rehabs are not usually enough to make a life change. There are some great programs being started in Franklin County and we need more of these that address the whole person, health, dental, counseling,job, home and self esteem. Our state will be stronger and we’ll save money in the long run, if we help, rather than punish, those who suffer from addiction.

I don’t have a solution but will support anyone who does.

It is a tragic symptom of the greed that has consumed our country at the expense, both emotionally and financially, of our citizens. And we have watched as we’ve lost our loved ones to a disease that was created for nothing more than profit.

As I have travelled around our district I have had several conversations with people about this issue. The conversations range from anger to compassion towards the individuals with opioid addiction.

Regardless of their different views,

all would like to see an end to this epidemic. I would too.

I can understand the anger when a mother speaks of her children finding needles in her front yard or someone is concerned about the latest robberies in their area. I can also understand the deep and incredible pain of a parent who has lost a beloved child to addiction or a child who has lost a beloved parent.

It is all just a big sad mess.

I want to highlight some points from an article about the economic impact the opioid epidemic has had on our country and our states.

“Inside The Massive Economic Impact Of The Opioid Crisis” by Kelly Burch, https://www.thefix. com/inside-massive-economicimpact-opioid-crisis · The largest economic impact came from individuals who lost potential earnings due to addiction or an early death. The economic impact of each opioid overdose death was estimated at $800,000. · Average age of opioid deaths is somewhere around the late 30’s or early 40’s. People in the prime productive years of their lives. · The federal government was impacted significantly due to lost tax revenue and increased costs for Medicaid and other services related to addiction and recovery, the report found. State and local governments were affected in similar ways. · Lost productivity, either due to ongoing illness or death, was the largest cost area. That was followed by healthcare costs, both direct and indirect. Opioid-related healthcare costs were calculated to be $215.7 billion from 2001 to 2017. · Additionally, the criminal justice costs associated with drug use, funds for child and family assistance, and education costs all contributed to the final $1 trillion figure.

So with those points highlighted, I believe we must realize in order to get the upper hand on this problem it is going to take dollars and a

well thought out coordinated effort to turn things around; but are we willing to invest in it? The reality is, if we really want this to end, we are going to have to invest our time and our money. We have some hope with the Purdue Pharma lawsuit, if the states involved in the lawsuit can win it, but that is going to take awhile. It is Purdue’s money that should really pay for the mess they created and help these devastated individuals and families with their recovery.

We must address the immediate urgency of getting addicts the help they need. We must educate with a furious effort the truths about addiction. We must start looking at the cost to our society, both emotional and financial, when our values are not focused on the well being of our citizens but first and foremost on the profits of business.

When greed is able to get a foothold such as what’s happened with the opioid epidemic we must be able to admit we are doing something wrong.

Throughout my entire campaign

I have talked about building a foundation that is strong, practical, functioning and will carry us all far into the future. The goal of building a foundation is so the pieces fit well together and create stability that allows people to move forward in their lives with hope and possibility. We all desire to be valued. And when we feel value we have the chance to move towards a more positive future basing our choices on the positive rather than the negative.

I will support investing in the recovery process. These are our people and as far as I’m concerned, we should leave no one behind. It will benefit every single one of us in the long run.

We also need to understand that becoming addicted to a substance does not mean a person is “bad”, but that it is almost necessary to commit crimes and violate relationships with others to support the financial cost of being dependent on a drug every day. We cannot solve the problem by finger pointing. We must work together toward real and lasting solutions no matter how difficult the process may be.

Vermont like other states has tightened the rules around opioid prescriptions. This is one step in reducing the number of opioids entering the community, including those unused in medicine cabinets, has resulted in real reduction of risk. Medicine cabinets are ripe for theft. Take back programs to empty the community of unused opiates are increasing, but perhaps if the pharmacies were somehow rewarded for the safe disposal of medications through redemption of unused pills, that even more would be recovered and destroyed.

An unfortunate result of this crackdown on prescribing has been the inevitable rise in heroin use.

Addicts do not stop being addicted when their supply is cut off, they are obligated to find something else. We must put greater focus on prevention and proven recovery programs. On a societal level, it is less expensive to prevent drug abuse than it is to rehabilitate those already addicted. Making it more difficult to obtain drugs, better treatment programs, stiffer penalties for dealers and other initiatives must be further expanded. Most important are creating opportunities to connect recovery to reentry into the workforce. A productive person feels better about themselves and provides a tremendous benefit to society.

We have done a decent job of getting an aggressive start on addressing the epidemic here in

We have medical treatment and rehabilitation programs available, but we also need to support stronger spiritual programs like AA, church groups and other peer to peer recovery organizations. It is not easy. It will not be easy. This problem will not be solved by posturing, partisanship or finger pointing. We need elected officials who will work with all stakeholders toward long term resolutions. We need elected officials who are not afraid to listen.

It is not an issue of jobs versus unemployment. It’s not an issue of race or gender or ethnicity. Addiction can and does affect all kinds of people from every walk of life. We as a state need to be ready to lend a hand up to our fellow Vermonters if we plan to pull ourselves out of this crisis.

Franklin-7 (Enosburgh/Montgomery) Felisha Leffler (R) (felisha@felishaleffler.com) Vermont’s battle against opioid addiction is something that is near and dear to my heart personally as well as politically. When Governor Shumlin made addiction a priority, it started the conversation about how we were going to understand, address, and resolve the issue.

Five years later, I think that we are really starting to see the beginning of those efforts, but we have a long way to go. First, I want to recognize the work that the BAART clinic in St. Albans and around the state is doing. By making use of their hub and spoke model of treatment, they are really able to create a treatment plan that is appropriate for each person and their situation.

I think that one of the next steps we should take is to create an education and prevention program that is at least as aggressive and widespread as the tobacco and alcohol campaigns that can be taught and publically shared. This will help our communities understand more about drugs, addiction, and the resources available to help.

Furthermore, I think that we need to assist those coming out of treatment with more of a reintegration program that can target those that are vulnerable to relapse and other dangerous situations. A job training and placement program, job fairs, and other activities that can help our neighbors, friends, and family have a smoother transition and more stabilization. Essentially, right now, we help people seek treatment but when they complete rehabilitation and enter into recovery, we need to do more to create a smooth transition back into the community.

This will help decrease relapses and stigmas while also increasing awareness and accountability. For so many people, treatment is the first step but it is by no means the end of the solution.

There are dozens of other incredible resources and ideas that the rest of the nation utilizes that I am looking forward to bringing to Montpelier’s attention and having

Cindy Weed (P/D)* (cindyweed@hotmail.com) In Vermont, there has been significant reduction in illicit opioid use since 2014 and the implementation of the Care Alliance for Opioid Addiction, an innovative Hub & Spoke system of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for people who are addicted to opioids, according to the Vermont Department of Health.

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and the Hub & Spoke model has proven to be the most effective treatment for people with opioid use disorders, according to the VDH. Medication-assisted treatment – with methadone or buprenorphine at regional treatment centers (Hubs), or with buprenorphine in physician offices (Spokes) – has been shown to be the most effective treatment for people with opioid use disorders.

A BAART clinic recently opened on South Main Street in St. Albans that offers MAT services and counseling to Franklin County residents. The Department of Health notes on their website that those involved in both Hub and Spoke settings reported a 96% decrease in opioid use, including a 92% drop in injection drug use! Plus, they noted, “significant reductions were reported by study participants in other measures: 89% decrease in emergency department visits; 90% reductions in both illegal activities and police stops/arrests; none had overdosed in the 90 days before the interview, compared to 25% who had overdosed before entering treatment.”

Because MAT prevents cravings and increases a person’s ability to avoid risky behaviors, and to care for themselves and their families, the program is being touted as a success by everyone involved.

These treatment methods are supporting addicted Vermonters and their families, preventing untimely deaths, saving Vermonters money in health care and the cost of crime, making Vermont a safer place to live, work and play.

Stephen proudly served his country starting in 1976 when he joined the Vermont National Guard. After serving two years in the Guard, he joined the United States Navy (1978), and was assigned to Mine Division 125 as a Boatswain Mate stationed in Charleston, S.C. He received his Honorable Discharge in 1981.

In 2003, Stephen met Angela Goodrich at a time when his life needed to be straightened out.

Angela told him point blank that he needed to shape up or ship out if he wanted to be with her. Stephen made that commitment and on Feb. 18, 2006 he and Angela were married.

In August of 2010, Stephen began his walk with Jesus and attended Richford First Baptist Church.

On Sept. 9, 2018 Stephen and Angela professed their commitment to each other and God by renewing their marriage vows.

Stephen’s faith was steadfast through his illness and his eyes were on the Lord. Hours before passing, Stephen said aloud “Lord, I’m ready to go home”.

Stephen is survived by his wife, Angela; his children, Garret and wife Jessica, Amanda and husband Andrew, and Darla Jean; grandchildren, Damian, Hunter, Andrew Jr., Kelli, Cassidy and Abigail; siblings, Charlie, Betty and Fred; special friends, Jim

Stephen L. Chapman

RICHFORD – Stephen L. Chapman entered the Kingdom of Heaven on Oct. 17, 2018 at his home in Richford. At his side was his wife Angela and several close friends.

Steven was born in Rumford, Maine on Aug. 27, 1953 to Charles and Dorothy Brown. When he was 14 months old, he was adopted by Sherwin and Frances Chapman.

When he was six years old, the family moved to Franklin, Vt. and eventually settled in Richford (1960). He attended elementary school in Richford and completed 10th grade at West Way High School in Toronto, Canada. His time in Toronto was very special to him and something he enjoyed

Leona was 71 years old.

On June 6, 2000, she married Charles E. Donaldson, who predeceased her on June 7, 2000.

Leona was educated in Richford and had a 14-year career at the Northwestern Medical Center in the Housekeeping Department and then with the Salvation Army.

Leona is survived by her three daughters, Amy Lynn Boomhower and her significant other, Alan Clogston, Tammy Wells, and Terry Hatterick and her husband, Danny; her stepsons, Lloyd Thompson and Philip Thompson; her special friend, Julia Guilfoil and her grandchildren, Amy Barratt, Alan Boomhower, David Boomhower, six other grandchildren, as well as four great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her brother, Roger Carr, Sr. and sister, Hilda Rushlow and several nieces and nephews.

MONTGOMERY – Lee Farrar, age 54, passed away Tuesday, October 2, 2018 after a brief illness at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

He was born April 3, 1964 in Enosburg Falls to the late Cortes & Glendora (Greenia) Farrar.

Lee grew up in Montgomery and attend schools in Montgomery and Richford. He always found a way to work jobs that he enjoyed, including, raising pigs and beef cows, farming, logging and sugaring. Lee’s favorite past times were hunting, fishing and spending quality time with his friends.

William “Bill” “PaPa” Gregory McMahon

FAIRFIELD: William “Bill” “PaPa” Gregory McMahon, 72, passed away on Tuesday October 16, 2018 at St. Albans Health & Rehab. He was born on October 13, 1946 son of the late Gregory and Hilda (Lafountain) McMahon.

Bill did handyman work for anybody and hardly charged for his work, a hard worker his whole life. He had built his family home and you would never hear him raise his voice. Pa Pa as his family called him had a calm demeanor and was strong hearted, a man of reason, he could offer the kindest insults to his family and friends.

He cared for over 20 cemeteries in the area meticulously mowing and gardening. Bill opened and closed gravesites always digging by hand shovel for many funeral directors.

He was always the last man to leave the cemetery after a funeral.

He was a great shot and as the story goes he once shot a coin off a fence post that was behind him by looking in a mirror. He did not go hunting but loved to go shooting.

He also had a love for children, was a great cook while his favorite meal was lasagna and brewed one hell of a cup of coffee. He would sometimes catch a hunger to go on his “drive through joy rides” where he would drive for miles after going thru the drive thru.

He was also known as an animal whisperer as many wild animals became unofficial pets of Bills. He was the hero of many and kind to all and will be missed by many.

Hughie grew up in Berkshire Center. He worked on his family farm and Johnson & Son Sawmill.

Hughie was a jack of all trades, from carpentry to painting, his craftsmanship was unmatched. He had a talent for thinking outside of the box. Hughie spent time as a volunteer for the Berkshire Fire Department. He enjoyed many things, including demolition derbies, trips to Mexico, and most of all spending time with family and friends. For the many, many people who knew Hughie, he was known for his generosity, his kind heart, his strength, and his willingness to help others. It is fair to say his goal in life was to make others happy and spread his memorable smile.

He is survived by his sister, Judy Perkins and her husband Allen of Johnson; his brother-in-law, Larry Longway of California; his nieces, Michelle Demag and her husband Michael Jr. of Berkshire, and Desiree Ryea and her husband James of California; his nephews, Hugh Perkins and his wife Heather of Johnson, Jeremey Perkins of Morrisville, and Tayo Perkins of Johnson, several beloved great nieces and nephews; and his specials friends, Guy Demag and his wife Mary of Franklin and, Daniel Lussier and his wife Susan of Sheldon. Besides his parents, Hughie was predeceased by his wife, Cheryl (Toby) Johnson; and his sister, Sandra Longway.

Elizabeth May Marrier

FAIRFAX/ RICHFORD: Elizabeth May (Bosley) Marrier, 89, died peacefully on Friday October 19, 2018 at the Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford.

Elizabeth was born on October 26, 1928 in Burlington, the daughter of Raymond and Lillian (Gonyo) Bosley.

On May 4, 1945, she married Harvey Marrier.

She is survived by her children Judy Letourneau of Berkshire, Gloria LeClair and her husband Marcel of FL and Essex Jct., Mary Spaulding and her partner Jim Ellsworth of Fairfax, Sheila Marrier of Essex Junction and Gary Marrier and his wife Darlene of Montgomery. Also, her grandchildren Shaun, Michael, Penny, Jeffrey, Holly, Michael, Brent, Jay, Chastity and Jesse; her greatgrandchildren and her greatgreat-grandchildren.

Betty is also survived by her brother Thomas Bosley and his wife Sally of Underhill, her sister Shirley Delisle of Colchester, her sister-in-laws Marion Bosley, Frances Bosley and Joan Bosley; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Harvey in 1985, her grandchildren Dale and Sheri Spaulding, her son-in-law Rene Letourneau her sister Theresa Martin and her brothers Kenneth, Raymond and Lawrence.

As per Betty’s wishes, there will be no visiting hours, however a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday October 26, 2018 at 11 am at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Mallets Bay, Colchester. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.

A celebration of Jeremy’s life will be held on Saturday, NOVEMBER 3, 2018, at 1pm at the V.F.W. Hall, 353 Lake Street, St. Albans.

ST. ALBANS BAY: Rita Mary (Richard) Smith 87 passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 surrounded by her loved ones at Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford.

Rita was born on July 31, 1931 in Champlain, New York the daughter of the late Elzeor and Germaine (Mailloux) Richard.

Rita retired from the St Albans Post Office in 1993. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Rita loved spending time with her family; she enjoyed her morning coffee, long walks, going for rides and making her famous coconut cream and sugar pies during the holidays. Mom loved reading medical books and diagnosing family members with NO medical background, where she was given the nickname (by dad) Dr. Rita!

(A little humor). She was known for giving her cheek kisses and laughed at every story she was told even knowing, you were completely joking with her. She was a very kind and loving person.

She was married to the love of her life Richard B. Smith to whom she shared 65 years together with.

She is survived by her daughters Debbie Boyer and her husband, Mickey of Highgate, Mary Smith and partner Neil Barrette of Rouses Point, NY, Carol Smith and partner Randy Reynolds of Essex Junction, Sharon Pion and husband Joe of St Albans and June Dragon and husband Brent of Milton; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, with one on the way; one brother-in-law and four sister-in-laws. She was predecessed by her loving husband Richard B. Smith, her parents, in-laws, sisters and brothers. As per Rita’s request there will be no funeral service. BAKERSFIELD – William J. Thomas Sr., age 88, passed away on Friday, October 19, 2018 at his home in Bakersfield.

He was born in Granville, NY on April 1, 1930 to the late John E. & Frances O. (Cota) Thomas.

William was very proud of his heritage, he was part Welch, part French, and part Abenaki Indian.

He vserved our country in the U.S. Navy where he was stationed on the U.S.S. Fargo. After receiving his honorable discharge in 1950 he returned home. William worked on the railroad for several years FREE EVENT

October 18, 2018 before he began his construction career. He worked for Wright & Morrissey and the State of Vermont for many years. He retired in 1992. William loved the outdoors, especially hunting & fishing. He also loved watching the History channel, his favorite programs were Mountain Men and Life Below Zero.

Thomas of Bakersfield; his children, Mark Thomas and his wife Candy, and Robert Thomas and his wife Ann all of Swanton; his god son, Buddy Brow of St. Albans; stepson, Thomas Barry III and his wife Lisa of North Hyde Park; several grandchildren & great grandchildren and his brother, Robert A. Thomas and his wife Ruth of Swanton. Besides his parents, William was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Ouimette; and his children, Michael J. Thomas, and William J. WATERVILLE: Charles Emery Tilton, 86 passed away Monday

October 15, 2018 at Copley Hospital in Morrisville, VT with his loving family by his side.

He was born on March 30, 1932 in Waterville VT son of the late Howard and Marjorie (Eldred) Tilton.

Charles believed in preserving the family legacy of hard work, determination, and conservation.

He was proud of his military service during the Korean War. He was a member of American Legion Post 46, Johnson VT. He was a life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Green Mountain Aerie #3210 Jeffersonville. He provided for his family by using the land for gardens, trees for wood / cedar & spruce oil / shingles, by his expertise as a heavy equipment operator. He learned his trade by working for G.W. Tatro Construction, H.A. Manosh, Pike Industries, Engelberth Construction, and Pizzagalli Construction and several others until his retirement. He was known to share his opinion about how things used to be done and how they’re done today. He was always telling parents of little children to let them be kids while visiting him, no rules at his home and the candy jar was always filled on the counter. He admired the talents of those who could write or play music; build things themselves, could live off the land. It didn’t matter to him if they were native Vermonter, or new to Vermont. He held Waterville close to his heart

MILTON: Eileen A. Titus, 88 of Milton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at her home on School Street in Milton.

Eileen was born December 10, 1929 in Bronx, New York City, New York the daughter of the late Harry and Katherine Hauser Rogers. On June 28, 1952 she married George Titus who predeceased her in October of 2004.

Following the death of George, she moved to Milton from Spring Valley, NY in May of 2005. While in Milton she became a member of the United Church of Milton and the Groovy Lunch Bunch. Eileen was an avid reader of mystery and suspense novels and loved a challenging crossword puzzle.

A generous and doting grandmother and greatgrandmother, she will be dearly missed. She is survived by her two daughters, Kathryn Pimentel of Thonotosassa, Florida and Lynn Dempsey and her husband, Stephen of Milton; grandchildren, Adam Pimentel and his wife, Jill, Allyn Morrison, Kyle Gilliam, Sean Dempsey, Ryan Dempsey and his wife, Alex, Brendan Dempsey and Meghann Oquendo and her husband, Michael. She also leaves two great-granddaughters, Laney Pimentel and Ava Dempsey as well as her sister, Audrey King of New Jersey. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Henry Rogers and her two sisters, Mae Goll and Edith Rogers.

A Memorial Service will be held later at the convenience of the family.

Jean Guy Viens

RICHFORD – Jean Guy Viens, age 84, passed away on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford.

He was born on September 10, 1934 in Sainte Brigide, Quebec, Canada. Jean Guy was one of ten children born to the late Alphonse & Marianne (Jette) Viens.

Jean Guy immigrated legally to the United States at the age of 17.

With only a 7th grade education, Jean Guy became a successful farmer, community member, and provider for his family. He was a proud man, and he made sure everything he owned was in good repair and perfectly maintained.

Jean Guy farmed for most of his life, but after retiring in 1987 he became a jack of all trades. He loved taking care of property, for himself, neighbors, and for the U.S. Customs border crossings.

Jean Guy was an excellent provider to all his family, and after the passing of his wife, he was the primary care giver for his handicap son, Guy. He is survived by his children, Michael Viens and his wife Mary of Berkshire, Diane Tracy and her husband Loren, and Guy Viens all of Fairfield; four grandchildren, Nicole Olmstead and her husband Nicholas, Gregory Tracy and his wife Erica, and Luc & John Viens; and two great grandchildren, Rowen & Riley. Besides his parents, Jean Guy was predeceased by his wife, Lillian Viens.

Jean Guy’s family would like to thank the staff at Our Lady of the Meadows for the tremendous care he received. They would also like to thank his neighbors, Norm & Ninfa Delorme and Norm & Huguette Marchessault for allowing Jean Guy to stay home for as long as possible.

my roommate was great,” said Hoffman, “I didn’t party or stay out late; I was in bed at 8 pm. I just slept and went to class.”

Physically, the changes were demanding on Hoffman’s body, but she wasn’t about to let go of her goals.

“My body was still recovering from the treatments; it takes about three months to flush the chemo medicine from your system. My

hair didn’t even start growing back until the end of March.”

Hoffman recalled a conversation she had with her mother recently.

“I was talking to my mom yesterday about how I felt after I found out I was cancer free. At that point, I wasn’t sure I wanted to go to college. I just wanted to go and start a regular life,” said Hoffman, “The whole time I was in college I took extra classes through summer and winter breaks. I worked hard so I could graduate early and get

out to do what I wanted to.”

Hoffman graduated a semester early with a major in Business with a concentration in Innovation and Entrepreneurship and a double minor in Psychology and Project Management.

Looking back, Hoffman has a lot of gratitude to the people that were there to support her as she walked through her journey with cancer.

“My family was amazing. They are the reason that I’m the strong independent person I am—which

they may have hated when I was going through chemo,” Hoffman said with a chuckle, “I didn’t want to be treated like I was sick, and I was vocal about that. If I wanted to do something, I did it--I was tired and stubborn. They have supported the person I wanted to be and that I am. Without that, I wouldn’t have been able to be as independent and confident as I was to get through.”

The school and the community also stood behind Hoffman.

“The varsity soccer team did a fundraiser for Lymphoma research, and the newspaper did an article about me while I was going through treatment,” said Hoffman.

A Calcutta fundraiser was also held in Hoffman’s honor. People from the area donated items for the Calcutta and sold tickets, and a friend of the family provided all the food at wholesale cost. Hoffman was amazed at the number of people who came out to show their support; the fundraiser brought in $12,000.

“I was there for the Calcutta and got to see everyone who was there to help me,” said Hoffman, “Fairfax is a tight-knit community, and when people need help they step up.”

Loving support also came from another avenue, one that surprised Hoffman.

“Our Australian Shepherd, Tag, wouldn’t leave my side; he knew I was sick. He would sleep beside me on my bed while I did my class work and he’d follow me to the living room and fall asleep watching me while I was on the couch,” said Hoffman, “You hear stories of people who have dogs that save their lives, and I felt some of that during my illness.

I’ve never had an experience like that with an animal.”

Since her clean bill of health, Hoffman has found that some things in her life stayed the same and others that surprised her.

“It does and doesn’t give you a different perspective. I’ve become very conscious of what I eat and drink, not that I was unhealthy before, but it’s important to me to know what’s going into my body.

I’m not afraid about my cancer coming back, I’m just more aware of my body and listening to what it needs.”

“I don’t take things for granted— even silly things. I’m so about the little things in life, and I feel like I’m so easily amused. I think learning to find some little things that make you happy on a daily

Hoffman also feels that she has learned to live life with a lot more spontaneity than she used to.

“Overcoming cancer did make me a little more spontaneous. I used to think through everything before I made a decision, but the illness made me trust my ‘gut’ more than I used to.”

The job at the Inn at Erlowest was one of those decisions. After spending time in New York City and not having a suitable job open up, Hoffman took a trip to the country.

“I think it’s so funny. I decided to take the job at the Erlowest on a whim. I had a friend who lived in Lake George, and I went to visit her. While I was there, I decided to apply at some places in the area.”

Hoffman applied at a handful of locations, and much to her surprise, she had a number of responses immediately.

“As soon as I drove onto the property at Erlowest I knew I wanted to work there. I was interviewed and offered a job right away. I accepted, went back to the city, packed up my life again, and moved to Lake George that week,” said Hoffman, laughing, “It was spur of the moment, a snap decision, but it was a good one.”

Spontaneity struck again with the addition of her dog Stella.

Hoffman has always been an animal lover and even chose to work at The Bed and Biscuit when she was home from college.

“She’s a rescue dog,” explained Hoffman, sharing a photo of a bright-eyed, smooth coated, golden dog. “My cousin was interning at an animal shelter that rescues and rehomes pit bulls. I saw a picture of her, decided to go visit, and I knew she was mine as soon as I met her.”

Although Hoffman still takes plenty of time to think many things through and she’s still the strong-willed, independent young lady she’s always been, there’s no question in her mind that some things will never be the same; that doesn’t mean they can’t be better.

“I like to think that cancer didn’t change me; that I’m not that different than I was before, but you can’t come out on the other side of things like that and not be changed. It will always be a part of my life; I just hope I came out more positive.”
