POLICE: MAN WHO CAUSED MORNING CRASH WAS WANTED BERKSHIRE: According to the Vermont State Police, a crash this morning that sent three men to the hospital with severe injuries was caused by a man wanted.

Philip Benoit, 27, of Richford was driving east, towards Richford when he crossed the center line, striking a Toyota pickup truck head-on. That truck was driven by Jason Jewer, 37, of Derby.

If what police report is correct, Philip Benoit was seen passing vehicles in his 2003 Ford Escape, at a high rate of speed just before the crash.

Benoit had two active arrest warrants for driving with a criminally suspended license, and failure to appear. He also had recently been cited into court for driving with a suspended license as well as Careless and Negligent Operation, according to Trooper Benjamin Patnode.

A passenger in Jewer’s truck, Wesley Galliot was also transported to the hospital for injuries sustained in the crash, according to Vermont State Police.

Trooper Patnode suspected Benoit was driving under the influence. The trooper applied for an arrest warrant, which was granted for Benoit’s blood. Those tests, according to Patnode, will be processed at the Vermont Forensic Laboratory in Waterbury.

Benoit has an extensive criminal history including charges of driving with a criminally suspended license, forgery, petit larceny, false pretenses, leaving the scene of an accident, and DUI. Both vehicles were totaled in the crash.

Richford Fire, Enosburgh Fire, and Berkshire Fire worked for more than an hour to free the men from their vehicles.

Richford Ambulance, Enosburgh Ambulance and Amcare Ambulances responded to the scene of medical transport.

HELP WANTED TO SOLVE HIT AND RUN Lee Dumas, 34, of Richford called police to report that a black F-150 pickup truck had struck him while he was riding his bicycle on Main Street in Richford.

According to police, Dumas was unable to remember the entire license plate number. Starting with 289A, but could not remember the remainder of the plate.

Dumas told police a young female was driving.

He transported himself to the ER, according to police.

MAN ASSAULTS MOTHER IN MONTGOMERY Robert Earley, 46, of Nantucket, MA was arrested by Vermont State Police after a report of a domestic assault.

Earley was accused by a family member of grabbing his elderly mother by the neck, slamming her to the floor, and hitting her head against the floor until she lost consciousness.

According to court files, the incident began when Earley’s mother confronted him about his language and temper around his children, her grandchildren.

Earley began to get very upset, ultimately leading to the physical assault.

He was arrested on Sunday evening and transported to Northwest Correctional Center before being arraigned on Monday.

He was released on conditions after his arraignment.

ST. ALBANS MAN ACCUSED OF SLASHING TIRES Brian Draper, 45, of St. Albans was arrested by the Vermont State Police this week after Philip Gover, 38, of Fairfield called police to report that his back windshield had been broken and the tires on his vehicle had been slashed.

Draper denied any involvement, but police later questioned his girlfriend who had text messages from Draper around the time of

the incident saying “I’m coming to your house” and “I’m done playing, I’m going after him.”

He was issued a citation to appear in court on November 13th.

ATV ACCIDENT KILLS FAIRFIELD MAN Ryan Branon was killed after running into a cable with his ATV in Fairfield on Saturday, according to police.

Branon had strung the cable of the skidder across the field to remove the curl in the line, according to police. He left for lunch and returned about an hour later.

That is when he, according to police, forgot the cable was there, driving into it with his ATV. Ryan sustained injuries to his upper chest and neck area. He dies on scene, according to police.

DUI/DLS REPORT • Michael LaFontaine, 47, of Enosburgh was arrested for driving with a criminally suspended license on Saturday evening on Interstate 91 in Barton. He is due in court on November 13th.

• Shawna McAllister, 47, of Richford was arrested for DUI after being pulled over on the South Richford Road on Sunday Morning. She is due in court on October 15th.

• Tyler Pelletier, 28, of St. Albans was arrested for DUI #2 after crashing his vehicle on the Highbridge Road in Georgia on Thursday evening. He is due in court on October 15th.

• Robert St. Francis, 53, of Highgate was arrested for driving with a criminally suspended license on September 28th after being pulled over on Interstate 89 in Swanton. St. Francis was also being investigated for fraud by the same State Trooper. He was cited into court on October 29th to those charges.

• Melissa Gutilla, 28, of St. Albans was arrested for DLS after being pulled over on Grand Ave. in Swanton on Thursday. She is due in court on November 13th.

VTDigger Vermont’s school district consolidation law envisioned smaller districts folding into larger entities, except where mergers aren’t “possible” or “practicable.”

In certain respects, the law is extremely specific, outlining potential configurations and the minimum number of students expected in new structures.

But on key points, Act 46 is vague.

“It doesn’t define what is possible or practicable. That’s kind of our job here today,” State Board of Education chair Krista Hurling said Tuesday at the start of another marathon meeting for

The board is tasked with deciding what to do with the 40some “alternative governance” proposals submitted under the law by districts that haven’t voluntarily merged by now. The secretary of education released a recommended plan earlier this summer, and the board now has until Nov. 30 to make the final call.

Over the course of eight hours, board members debated debt, community votes against mergers, geography, and relations between districts. The board ultimately voted to adopt a short list of principles to guide their decisionmaking process moving forward, although its members also

voted to demolish the church and liquidate the assets.

Because the church is a not for profit organization, the funds from the sale and any funds the church has accumulated to date would have to be donated to another, not for profit organization. That’s according to the church’s own meeting minutes after a proposal was offered during a meeting in 2001.

In that same legal opinion offered to the church, the attorney suggests that the remaining assets legally become assets of the Town of Enosburgh once the church stops holding at least one service a year there.

The last service on record was held in 2001.

That may not be the case now though. Several years ago when Stephen J. Perley was selectboard chair, he presented to the selectboard a proposal to remove the wording from the church’s deed that it would be returned to

the town.

It is not clear through public records how or if Perley recused himself from the matter at the time, as he was one of just a few church members left at that time.

In 1966, with diminishing attendance, the church closed its doors for weekly services but continued to hold a yearly service for about four decades.

According to the listing on the National Register of Historic Places, the church boasts unique architecture, including a mixture of Greek Revival and Italianate

Leonard Nichols, Ruth’s brother, said they have meetings only as needed. According to Leonard, the church has only three “active” members and stated Ruth had made her wishes known not to be a part of it anymore.

“We don’t warn meetings,” Leonard said, “Carolyn calls the three of us when we need one.”

Carolyn Perley said they are working with one party who plans to sell off the contents of the church and use the revenue to level the building, turning it back into green space.

Carolyn Perley said the structure of the building is in dire need of repair and “probably won’t survive another winter.” She said last winter there were raccoons that nested inside the church for winter, leading to the destruction of the building.

Peter Perley did not have the same description of the property, “It’s okay structurally, but it needs a lot of work, and it’ll cost a lot of money.” He said the windows are broken and very costly to repair.

It’s been a year since a windstorm toppled the steeple of the church.

Peter Perley said the damage to the steeple coming down was limited, noting that the parts of the church that were damaged by that storm were already in need of repair.

The church once sought out information from the Enosburgh Historical Society, according to Carolyn Perley, but are unable to take on the entire church.

Leonard put it quite simply, “I’d like to see the church torn down.”

It’s not clear what the timeline may be on tearing it down.

Carolyn Perley said its likely in the very near future, Peter Perley didn’t answer the question clearly, and Leonard Nichols said they haven’t made a final decision on it yet.

October 4, 2018 THANKS FOR COMING HOME This past weekend Enosburg Falls High School hosted their Homecoming games both on the volleyball court and on the soccer field.

Overall the Hornets went 4-1-1 with the varsity teams sweeping their games, and the JV Teams playing exceptionally well in a 0-0 tie with Hazen and a 3-0 loss to a very good Fairfax team.

It takes many, many people to pull these events off so we have some expressions of gratitude for those who made it a reality.

Let’s start with the kids for playing so hard, for demonstrating such great sportsmanship and for supporting each other during their games over the weekend. next, our opponents from Fairfax, Hazen and VT Commons School.

Without them we do not play our games so they are, in effect, also teammates when you look at the big picture.

Many thanks to those who supported us with better sound systems, bleachers, grills and ice.

When you have to seat and feed 500 or more people for the games it takes many more bleachers, larger grills and more ice-making capabilities than we have here at our school. the many, many volunteers who took time out of their days to transport bleachers from the Lions’ Club storage; and then transpporting the lights from Essex, setting them up and return them on Sunday.

A huge thank you to our Boosters’ Club, who is the most devoted group of people that I have ever been associated with. Without their help transporting lights and bleachers, (many of those mentioned earlier are Boosters members) making supply runs, running the food booth, taking money at the gate, selling 50/50 tickets and so much more, we never could pull off such an weekend event. I have said it many times, ‘Our Boosters’ Club is the best in the State!’

Finally thank you to the Enosburg Community for supporting this event. Our students look forward to this weekend every year and, like many other things that we do, we wouldn’t be successful without the community’s support. What a fun event, something to look forward to year after year!

Chris Brigham Enosburg Falls High School Athletic Director DON’T SUPPORT MEDIOCRITY Regarding Mr. Araujo’s comment from 20 September concerning keeping the ‘experienced’ legislator in office: There aren’t many politicians who had the benefit of experience in their elected office until they were actually elected – that’s especially true at the local level.

It also bears keeping in mind there are a multitude of professions where longevity and familiarity lead to complacency, which

ultimately breeds mediocrity. The political field is no exception here, as evidenced by low Congressional approval polls year after year, without regard to which party dominates. Unfortunately (for us), politicians operate on the seniority system, which guarantees the least energetic and most jaded members will amass the most power.

I would much rather give an inexperienced newcomer with an abundance of enthusiasm and energy an opportunity, knowing full well she has the ability to quickly learn, adapt and succeed. If we fail to provide these opportunities to our youth, we’ll soon find many joining the Royal Navy in their Thursday toast.

I am supporting Felisha Leffler because she is intelligent, ambitious, courteous, and dedicated to improving our communities. Her responses to the weekly questions posed by this newspaper are always well researched, logically presented and quickly get to the heart of the matter. Montpelier needs an infusion of young, new talent with fresh ideas to address the issues that continually get kicked down the road.

to us, seek to understand our needs, and then vote accordingly in Montpelier, expressing our views rather than those of outside national organizations or corporate interests.

It’s for that reason I’ve supported Cindy Weed in three elections and will vote for her again next month. When I see mailers from her opponent claiming that she’s “lost touch with her constituents,” I laugh. I’ve seen Cindy at more than two dozen civic events and meetings this year — I have yet to meet her opponent. Cindy’s funding is local, while her opponent has accepted money from out-ofstate donors, including thousands from the Breuers of Massachusetts, who despise Vermont’s traditions of tolerance and acceptance. I suspect should she win, she will be beholden to these donors’ desires more than ours. Money doesn’t talk; Money screams.

When I hear that Cindy is “antifamily” I laugh again. As the mother of three and a grandmother, her passion for making Vermont more livable is rooted in her concern for her own family, and mine. She works amazingly hard for us. Simply Googling the list of bills she’s sponsored shows she fights for all of us and our kids.

I am sure Cindy’s opponent is an energetic, educated and motivated young lady. She may somedaDaren Dreviy do great things for our state. But I encourage voters not to cast aside a proven neighbor and advocate for our needs on the hope that cash donations from outsiders who embrace hate won’t come with a hefty bill attached.

Darren Drevik Montgomery NEED HARSHER PUNISHMENTS I wonder why our legislators even bothered to pass the no talking or texting cell phone law, it amounts to nothing. Constantly you see people on them while driving and it appears no one is ticketed for using one while driving and very often we see close calls caused by their illegal use.

As far as I am concerned if you are driving and talking or texting and cause a fatal accident, it is no different than being under the influence of alcohol or drugs and sentencing should be handed out accordingly; yet Ryan Kennelly killed two-yes-two people while using his cell phone and driving and he was only sentenced to four years’ probation and a $1000.00 fine-no wonder so many people continue to use them while driving-there are no serious fines or penalties.

The judge who handed out this meager sentence should be removed from the bench. This terribly inadequate sentence along with the new one for Donald Fell show a dismal failure of Vermont’s judicial system. Two lives lost due to carelessness in the use of a cell phone and no prison time sends a terrible message to the victim’s families, as does the three lives lost because of Donald Fell’s actions and the court believes keeping him alive serves a purpose.

First offense for cell phone use while driving should be $500.00 and three points on your license, second offense $1000.00 and the loss of the phone along with eight

points on your license and a fatality should automatically be three to five years jail time and loss of license for at least two years after release.

Raymond Ferland Enosburg Falls, VT FEGARD WILL LEAD I have never written a letter in support of a candidate before, but I now feel that with the political climate as it is, we all need to do more to support our communities and protect our interests and that begins at the local level.

We are very fortunate in our state to have such great representation in Washington and equally lucky to have so many fine people to choose from on the local level.

I am writing in support of Charen Fegard, who is running for House Representative for the Franklin-5 District. I first met Charen when she was going door to door in Richford to introduce herself to the community and to answer any questions we may have - not an easy job in any community. Steve Messier Saint Albans POT TAX WONT WORK Regular readers will have already noticed the recent report given to the Cannabis Oversight Committee. The report quoted Vermont Tax Commissioner Samson’s findings that taxation of cannabis in Vermont would not be able to generate enough new revenue to cover all costs.

“As far as beyond the actual costs to have a safe and responsible tax and regulated system, it is unreasonable to assume that there will be a lot of money floating around,” Samson said. “And when we get estimates for education, public safety, and highway safety: there will be great demands there.”

The Tax Department is estimating increased revenue of $15-20 million. This new revenue would cover education programs as well as the roadway enforcement and training needed to maintain public safety. It will not include indirect revenue needed from cannabis tourism or cannabis industry jobs.

No surprise here. This prediction of revenue shortfall in taxing cannabis was evident from the very beginning. Discussions with officials from other states where legalization of cannabis has been on the books a few years made it obvious that in our small state the increase in costs for safety, medical care and addiction would outpace tax revenue. Early on it was

evident that Vermont could not possibly end up with a revenue boost. This was brought up during floor debates, but ignored by the majority.

So now without the tax, Vermonters are paying the entire increase in cost from existing revenues.

And with the tax, officials are now agreeing the increased costs will not be covered .

Legalizing this substance in Vermont was a financial mistake.

And it is still illegal at the federal level.

SENATE HOPEFUL CALLED OUT FOR “SEXUAL ASSAULT JOKE”

Dustin Tanner announced his bid for the Vermont Senate in June, three years after posting a video on his YouTube channel that joked about sexual assault, buying marijuana from high school students, and being a CCV dropout.

Tanner, a Progressive/Democrat running to fill one of two Senate seats took a stand-up comedy class in 2015, ultimately leading to the 2015 set, according to an interview with Seven Days newspaper, who broke the story last Thursday.

The joke that gained the most attention Thursday was likely the one about not committing sexual assault on his dentist.

“My dentist, I swear to God has the biggest tits ever,” Tanner said as he acts out a person leaning over a dental chair, “She’s like this, right over me. At this point, I can’t feel my face.”

Tanner continues acting his part of sitting in the dental chair with a numbed mouth, mimicking the sounds of a dental patient trying to talk with someone’s hands in their mouth, “I’m sitting there with my tongue hanging out of my mouth, literally an inch from her breasts.”

The joke continues as Tanner describes the female dentist as she tries to pull his tooth, “She’s going at it like she’s trying to win a prize at the State Fair,” he said.

The room of 21 years and over comedy goers gives an uncomfortable laugh, and that’s when he delivers the punch line, “I went to the dentist that day, but I was lucky I didn’t commit sexual assault.”

The video was made public

by Shayne Spence, an employee who works part-time for the Don Turner for Lieutenant Governor’s campaign. Turner is running against David Zuckerman, who employed Tanner in a similar position as Spence during his last campaign.

Spence said he thought the video, which has since been deleted by Tanner, shows his true colors, and, in a time when the country is divided from the Kavanaugh hearings in Washington, voters should have the ability to know

The timing of the sexual assault joke video corresponded with Tanner’s announcement that he was endorsed by Planned Parenthood, an endorsement that Spence pointed out was hypocritical when a candidate makes jokes of such a serious nature. Tanner’s Twitter post about the endorsement was later deleted.

Often times campaign donations come with such endorsements, but Tanner failed to file an October 1st campaign finance report, so that it could not be verified one way or another.

According to Tanner, an unknown person emailed him in May to complain about the video, soon after he announced his intentions to run for the Senate.

“I was hoping that if somebody had a concern, they could have reached out to me privately,” Tanner told the County Courier in a telephone interview, “I want to make this a learning experience and move the conversation forward.”

The jokes, according to Tanner were “completely fictional.”

We checked with NOTCH, who Tanner has repeatedly said in public he relied on for health and dental coverage for years before his current insurance went into effect this past July.

The organization declined to comment, but records show the Federally Funded Health Care Center employed at least one female dentist around the time Tanner made and told the joke. It also employed at least two male dentists.

When asked who his dentist was at the time, Tanner replied, “I haven’t been to the dentist in a couple of years. He’s a guy with a real doctory sounding last name. I don’t know my dentist’s name, but he’s a male.”

Tanner went on to describe the dentist as a guy about 6’2” tall, with dark straight hair and glasses.

“Those jokes were not who I am, or who I want to be anymore,” Tanner said, describing his experience re-watching the video, “The jokes were bad jokes, they weren’t funny, and they were distasteful.”

The candidate works at Milton High School, maintaining the school’s computer network. He previously worked at Rice High School as a girls’ Volleyball coach.

Marijuana had been decriminalized in Vermont for about two years, but at least three years away from its legalization, when Tanner made the joke about where to buy it.

“I go through this every time I want to buy weed,” Tanner says pacing the small stage at the Vermont Comedy Club in Burlington, “You gotta know a guy, that knows a guy, that knows a guy that just got out of jail. It’s complicated. You can’t just buy weed like you can with cigarettes or alcohol. You have to put in the work and do the research.”

Tanner pauses before delivering the punchline, “The next thought I have is ‘I work in a high school, half the kids are smoking it, why don’t I just buy it from them.’”

Tanner said he does not “partake” in the usage of marijuana, though he is an advocate for it’s regulation.

When asked if he spoke to his current employers (Milton High School and Rice High School) about the jokes becoming public, Tanner said, “I’m not employed by that school anymore, these jokes were three years ago, and they’re both fictional jokes.”

At the time he worked for Enosburg High School.

Spence said he shared the video about buying marijuana from high school students because he thought

voters should know what Dustin says when he’s not campaigning.

“When you’re suggesting that you’re buying drugs from teenage children and you’re working with those children, there are just a few things that I think we can agree shouldn’t be joked about.”

The County Courier contacted each of Dustin’s opponents. His running mate, fellow Democrat, Pam McCarthy did not return the County Courier’s request for comment as of press time but did speak with the Burlington Free Press for a story about Dustin’s stand-up comedy.

“This is an important lesson that in this day and age, anything one puts online is completely public,” McCarthy told the Free Press, adding it’s “disheartening to know the lengths some people will go to discredit others to further their own agendas.”

Randy Brock, a Republican candidate, and incumbent, responded to the video simply by saying, “It’s unfortunate.

Sometimes what’s intended as comedy is not funny.”

Corey Parent, the other Republican candidate vying for one of two Senate seats said he was more focused on his own campaign than Tanner’s campaign or Tanner’s video, adding, “I think the comments in the video are inappropriate and Dustin should issue a public apology.”

Tanner said he has apologized to every media outlet that has contacted him, but he has yet to issue his own apology to voters, through any of his social media

platforms, as of press time on Wednesday.

“If anyone has any concerns, feel free to reach out to me on any of my social media channels, and I will do my best to address those concerns,” Tanner said.

Although Tanner has not officially announced an apology, the Burlington Free Press quoted him as “It’s not acceptable, I would probably never tell a joke like that ever again.”

The County Courier obtained a copy of the entire video Dustin posted on YouTube by searching through cached websites.

A section of the video, which was not shared on Twitter by Spencer, showed more of Dustin’s sex-related jokes, including one when he tells of the first time he asked a girl out. The punch line ends with Tanner saying, “It was that day that I discovered internet porn in sixth-grade.”

Tanner also joked about having to drive behind slower drivers, “I’ve had multiple friends tell me to slow down. I’ve had multiple Sheriffs tell me to slow downOn the road, and in court.” He continues to tell about his road rage while driving behind slower vehicles, including “tractors every five miles.”

At one point in the video, Tanner even joked about his own political views, “Now I’m a super liberal,” he explains to the audience, “my whole goal in life is to take your first born and raise your taxes, ‘cuz that’s what we do. At least in Franklin County.”

Without the new mission that the F-35s provide, the 158th Fighter Wing face the potential of losing their flight mission as the aging F-16s are retired. Since the 1950s the Air Guard base has hosted several aircraft and being selected by the Air Force as the best out of 205 locations for the F-35s keeps the Green Mountain Boys in the air.

The Air National Guard provides economic support to our region with valuable infrastructure maintenance and upgrades as well as the fire and safety equipment support to the commercial operation and military use of the airport. SEPTEMBER 30, 2018 Here we are ending another month; it went as fast as all the others. Been busy with the

rummage sale that will be held this coming Saturday, Oct. 6 at the United Methodist Church starting at 8 am. We have been overwhelmed with the amount of things donated to us. The space inside our church is small, the tent we rent is filled, the porch across the street from the church becomes filled and our neighbors lawn and the church lawn. This will be a busy-busy week for many of us.

We pride ourselves in having a nice sale and appreciated nice things that are given to us. We hope for nice weather !

9/29: The first “Blessing of the Animals Service” was held on the Village Park with 13 dogs coming with their owners to attend the event by Pastor Bonnie Hoverman and musician Patrick Evans, playing his Melodica. The pets were all treated to fresh water and dog treats, and the parents were treated to lemonade and cookies.

It was a fun time, the dogs were well behaved, my dog Willee tried joining in to sing..that was a hoot.

He is so precious for his age going on 15. We also had by-standers that stopped in and enjoyed the event with us.

9/27: The Nimble Thimble Quilting Circle met again at the home/barn of Cheryl Heneveld on the Longley Bridge Road. The ladies all enjoyed lunch together and for dessert they had brownies and ice cream. The group was very slow in moving to the barn to sew due to so much information that needed to be shared. They had a guest named Stacey Gregorire and of course they all had to tell her our stories and share hers. There were 10 members in attendance and getting that many women on

October 4, 2018 track can be tricky, but they were successful in finishing about five cosmetic bags for their holiday project. The plan is to provide bags and assorted grooming items to a Vermont Agency on violence. They will present these to the agency at the November meeting. They could have 50 by then. Their next meeting will be at Susan Smolinisky’s home in Peacham and they will caravan there and it will be on Wednesday, October 24, changing from their usual Thursday to make certain everyone can go. Thanks to this group of ladies for all the stitches they make during each year, to bring something wonderful to someone in need.

Montgomery has received word of the passing of Roland Proulx of Galloway, NJ. He grew up in Montgomery Center at Hill Top Farms, the son of Henry and Anita Proulz. There will be a Funeral Service in New Jersey on October 4th and later a Funeral Mass here at St.Isidore’s Church on Saturday, October 6 at 11 am; with burial to follow. In addition to national defense, Vermonters reap many economic benefits from these planes being based here. There are hundreds of high paying jobs to be filled that insure employment of specialized flyers, maintenance and aircraft mechanics, and other ancillary categories of needed services.

There are those who object to Vermont receiving these highly specialized fighter planes.

The Vermont legislature is not responsible for and does not have any jurisdiction over accepting these aircraft. These decisions rest with the Federal government and the military and do not involve any official in state or local government.

Our Congressional delegation, led by Sen Patrick Leahy, is responsible for acquiring the F-35 and any concerns or comments about this issue must be addressed to Sen Leahy, Sen Danders and Rep Welch.

VOTERS BACK SCHOOL BOARD Shoot Down Asset Sale and Non-Operating School District

By Gregory J. Lamoureux County Courier FRANKLIN: Almost 200 voters turned out on Tuesday evening at the Franklin Central School to vote on a last ditch effort to fight a forced merger before the State’s expected announcement on October 17th.

Three articles were presented to voters, including two that were forced on the board by a petition.

The School Board discussed it, and voted unanimously not to support the article.

The first article, asking voters to sell the physical assets of the school to the town was defeated overwhelmingly, 29-161.

Voters seemed to be the most concerned with the prospect of having to financially support their school, while being lumped into another school district which would include Highgate and Swanton Schools- forcing Franklin taxpayers to financially support a portion of those schools, too. That, compounded with the notion that a school which is not owned by the school district operating students within the school may actually give a future combined board a reason to shutter the central school and move its students to Highgate or Swanton.

The vote came the same day as the Vermont State Board of Education announced its criteria for forcing mergers in districts who wished not to merge themselves.

The Agency Secretary announced a plan to force a merger among many of those districts earlier this year.

In Franklin County, that includes the districts of Enosburg, Richford, Montgomery, Sheldon, Franklin, Highgate, and Swanton.

The proposal would add Sheldon and Montgomery to an already merged Berkshire and Bakersfield district.

Enosburg and Richford would merge together. In addition, Franklin, Highgate, and Swanton are proposed to merge.

The second article posed to voters on Tuesday evening was to see if the district should close the school and transition to a “nonoperating” school district.

The thinking is that it would allow a non-profit to step in and run a private school for Franklin students, but with the first article turned down, that seemed like a bigger stretch than a week ago when the proposal was first presented to voters.

The article was also put forward to voters by way of a petition, but again, the school board unanimously voted not to support it.

Indeed, voters would turn that article down as well, 15-175.

The more than two hour long meeting concluded with the discussion of the transfer of property that is currently being used by the Town’s Recreation

Department.

School Board Chair Bob Berger said the board presented this article as a way to save part of the school from a forced merger, which is largely maintained by the Recreation Department of the Town anyway. That proposal was to sell the ball fields and walking trails to the town for $1.

a forced merger, but also included the rational that the Recreation Department currently has to communicate with two boards before they can do any work on the fields. Selling ownership rights to the town would streamline that process.

Much discussion around the details, timing, and legality concluded in the voters passing the proposal by voice vote. It

appeared only one voter opposed the measure.

Details about when the closing would happen, or how a subdivision of the school’s property will still have to be ironed out by the school and selectboard, but it is expected that in the next two weeks, the land will become property of the town, instead of the school.

REMEMBERING ADA This spring and summer a transformation has taken place on a portion of the BFA Fairfax cross country trail. Students and community members have set their sights on creating a beautiful space to remember a wonderful person they lost too soon.

Ada’s Garden, named after Ada Sorensen who lost her life in an accident last year, has begun to take shape thanks to the loving and generous help of the Fairfax community.

Kathleen Shedd has been instrumental in helping to keep

Ada’s memory alive in the town that she called home during her young life.

When the memorial garden concept began to take shape, Shedd and others reached out to BFA Fairfax principal John Tague for his help.

“The school has made it possible to build a memory garden in Ada’s name. They have given us a big area to use, and we’ve been working to fill it. We found a spot off to the side of the cross country trail in the woods. There’s a stream, a little bridge; when we

found it we knew that was the spot,” said Shedd.

The garden currently measures about 100 feet square and has been steadily receiving plants to fill the space thanks to many generous donations from community members.

“The town has also helped us so much; we’ve had over one hundred plants donated, as well as fifty bags of compost, and labor to see to the removal of trees. This process has really brought out the best in people,” said Shedd.

At the initial planting, over thirty people came out to help kick start work on the project.

“There are so many people that want to do something in Ada’s name, and that has to be so nice for her family.”

Ada’s Garden hopes to see a stone wall built which will include an archway. They would like to find a stone mason who will accept the help from BFA Fairfax students.

“This is a community garden and we want the community to enjoy it and be part of putting it together,” noted Shedd.

This weekend the soccer fields at BFA Fairfax will be busy as the first soccer tournament in Ada’s memory is held on the grounds.

Shedd and a group of student and community volunteers decided to host the event in Ada’s honor.

“We are doing our part to make sure that Ada is never forgotten,” said Shedd, “I’m so grateful for the community support. There

For the County Courier The old harness shop on Bridge Street in Sheldon has undergone a steady and impressive transformation over the last two years, with major improvements taking shape over the summer of 2018.

Members of the Sheldon Historical Society and local residents have worked together to breathe life back into one of Sheldon’s historical landmarks.

Although there is still plenty of work waiting in the wings, there’s a lot to celebrate.

The building on Bridge Street has served many purposes over its 85-year history. It has housed a post office, a general store, a movie theater, the town clerk’s office, and a harness shop.

Sheldon was a booming, rural retreat and an excellent place to do business in its earlier years. The rushing water and mineral springs brought mills and tourists, keeping a steady stream of income for local residents.

“There was a blast furnace, a woolen mill, a bank, numerous hotels, two other riverside mills, and Hapgood’s Store. That store burned in the 1800’s and was replaced by the W.C. Marsh store,” said local historian, Harold Smith.

Sheldon also had a creamery, Alden Brother’s Creamery, later known as Hood Creamery, located just behind Marsh’s store. The railroad tracks ran through the town, shipping and dropping goods at the station on Depot Street.

“The Junction was the meeting place for two railroads. People from the city would come out to the country to escape the filth of the cities,” said Smith.

Sheldon Junction was also the site of the Franklin County Fair,

that the railroad built a sidetrack exclusively for fair traffic.

After the invention of the automobile, the railroads switched their focus from passenger trains to freight trains, and at one point the Mississquoi Valley may have been one of the most freight-laden lines in the nation.

“The area around this building was the historic, central hub of Sheldon,” explained Smith.

The town of Sheldon was so successful that it even made a bid for the title of County Seat.

“The deciding vote was cast by a man who was a legislator and a railroad man in St. Albans,” said Smith, “If things had gone the other way, the county seat would have been here.”

Tragedy struck in 1932 when a fire raged through the town. No one knows for sure, but there’s a good chance it began in the Blacksmith’s shop beside Marsh’s store.

That fire destroyed buildings on both sides of the road, engulfing the bulk of the ‘hub’ in an uncontained blaze which eventually burned the double lane, wooden covered bridge.

“This street went from a social, industrial, commercial hub to almost nothing, and it really never recovered,” said Smith.

The State came in and rebuilt the bridge and Mr. H. H. Mower, who was an industrious businessman, decided to build a store on the foundation of the one that burned.

Some of the mills remained, but those that burned were never replaced. Two sawmills had stood on the banks, one of them burned while the other remained.

Thankfully, the structure of the building was sound and the wood used for the original construction was nearly all native, Vermont wood.

“When this building was built it was structurally fantastic. Even to this day, there are so many true lines. The foundation has shifted, but we’ve been assured that when that is replaced, the building will plumb right back in shape.”

While there is much that will need replacing, there is also plenty to be salvaged. Two windows have received special treatment to ensure that the building retains its original appearance. The floors in the building, which are original, will also be restored along with the remaining wainscoting.

In the spring of 2017, the shiplap covering the old storefront was removed, revealing two large, pane glass windows and two doorways.

Just last week underground gas tanks which had been buried near the building were removed.

Smith explained that the process of going through the State and the Brownfield Project to remove the tanks was very time-consuming, requiring numerous wells and samples to be taken from around the property.

“A grant is being drafted that will pay to bring in a landscape architect to come and lay out the grounds so it can be used as a community park, something we’d like to see within the next five years,” said Smith, “We are hoping to receive a clean bill of health so that we can proceed to use the whole property.”

While the historical society waits on the go-ahead for outdoor projects, they’ve turned their energies to the inside of the building.

The second story, which used to be the storekeeper’s quarters, has been emptied and gutted. It will serve as a large community room when the project is finished.

“A good deal of the focus here is that this is a community building, not a historical society building,” explained Smith.

The process of restoring the building is a step-by-step process and has required many difficult decisions that often require outside opinions.

“You have to give consideration to almost everything you do.

played a sport at MVU. One night at practice I remember overhearing a couple of players commenting on how great their experience was and how it has brought them closer as a group of senior girls.”

Regardless of which team gets bragging rights from the annual contest, it is fair to say that everyone leaves a winner. Benefits from the Powder Puff games have recently gone to Camp Ta-KumTa and the Jim Bashaw Memorial Cancer and Catastrophic Fund.

“It is great to see these girls come together for two great causes. We had representatives from both organizations come and speak to our girls before the game was played. We want them to understand what they are playing for,” explained Palmer, “We always tell our girls, the game is important, but the causes are more important.”

Bouchard, who is a multisport athlete at MVU, shared her thoughts on the impact of the game.

“I’ve been on teams that have raised money for breast cancer and supported other causes, but nothing compares to Powder Puff.

To go out on the field and know that you’re raising so much money

gives you such a good feeling.”

While the goal of the evening is to raise money, no one should underestimate the desire that both teams have to secure the victory.

Makenzie Reed, who plays for the MVU varsity field hockey team, found that the game was more intense than she had expected.

“Our crowds are big for field hockey, but looking up in the crowd at Powder Puff was totally different. There were so many people,” said Reed, “It was nice that we won, but the night is about so much more, and I really felt that that night.”

Louten found watching on the sidelines when she wasn’t on the field to be some of the most nerve wracking parts of the game.

Palmer noted that the BFA St. Alban’s defense did a great job in the second half of the game, silencing the Thunderbird scoring efforts.

All three of the touchdowns the T-Birds scored came in the first half, scoring on their first three possessions. The girls also kicked the first extra point the school has

were ready to go,” said Paradee.

Every year students share the field on game night and during practices with people they might not have ever interacted with before.

“The lead up to the game was a good experience for MVU, probably the same for BFA, too.

Having something like Powder Puff brought girls together that hadn’t talked in years,” explained MVU senior Renee Bouchard.

Emeila Palmer, Dan Palmer’s daughter also embraced the opportunity to take part in the event.

“It was a great experience with a lot of the girls from the senior class. I was able to get closer with some of the girls that I did not know as well before,” said Emelia.

“Taking part in the game really brought us together. I’d say that we are closer than we were a week ago; the game, the win, the whole game day—everything—we all got together for this cause that was greater than anything else,” said Journi Louten.

Palmer shared a moment from the preparation time that stood out in his mind.

“We had 39 girls participate this year, and 22 of them had not

This year’s win did mean a lot to MVU and the joy of it was still present as the school week began.

“The smiles on girls faces this morning are huge! There is just a tremendous sense of pride and positive feelings around the building,” said Dan Palmer, offensive coordinator for the MVU Powder Puff team and MVU’s middle school principal.

Win or lose, the Powder Puff football game always provides the community and the senior students who participate with lasting memories. The game is open to any senior girl who wants to play, whether they’ve ever played a varsity sport or not.

Kylee Paradee, who spends most of her time enjoying the arts, decided to get out of her comfort zone and join the team.

“It was a lot of hard work and dedication, even before the game.

Senior girls from BFA St. Albans and MVU have taken the field every fall for ten years to play a game of flag football, but there’s a lot more to the night than the game.

“Dan Marlow and I have joked that if we gathered a group of people from BFA St. Albans and MVU together to play a game of checkers, it is going to be competitive, but this particular event, because of what we support, has become a true community event, the largest of its kind in the state,” said MVU Principal Jay Hartman, “There is a tremendous amount of cooperation between the schools and the momentum for this event just continues to grow year after year.”

The tradition began a decade ago when a student from BFA requested the opportunity to host a game as a fundraiser for someone battling an illness. Since then, both schools have joined forces to raise over $250,000 for local charities.

HORNET HOMECOMING WINS ABOUND

Members of the Enosburg Girls’ Varsity soccer team celebrate on Saturday.

Enosburg Falls High School hosted homecoming games over the weekend, drawing large crowds from the community.

The boys’ soccer team kicked off the weekend with a dramatic 2 to 1 win over visiting Hazen under the lights on Friday evening.

The victory came in the final minutes of the game as Dylan Pattee kicked the tie-breaking goal on a rebound, the crowd roaring their approval.

“It’s always a lot of fun to win a homecoming game, and we’ve been lucky enough to play under the lights for the last few years,” said Enosburg boys’ varsity coach Randy Swainbank, “the boys really dug deep tonight. We tied with Hazen the last time we played them, so both of the games have been hard fought.”

Enosburg graduated strong players last year, and this year’s players have had a void to fill.

“Some of our guys stepped up tonight and that really injected some life into us, especially in the second half,” said Swainbank.

Evan Cota received much earned praise from Swainbank “Evan has been solid all season.

He stood on his head for us tonight making a couple of very difficult saves.”

Logan Jette scored for the Hornets in the first half, using the speed and agility he’s demonstrated all year to help put his team on the board.

“There was a lot of excitement tonight! We came out a little flat, but when we got our first goal it gave us a lot of energy. We got low when they scored, but we picked it up and after Dylan scored, the last five minutes were just crazy,” said Jette.

Jette also extended thanks to the crowd.

“Our fans were wild today!

They were so loud; it was a high school dream!”

Dylan Pattee, the one responsible for the winning goal, shared his thoughts on the moment.

“Logan crossed the ball in, it bounced, and hit the goalie’s chest.

He bobbled it, and I put it back in the net,” said Pattee.

Pattee is playing his first year with the varsity team.

During the last minutes of the game, the ball found its way to Cota’s end of the field, nearly making it into the net.

“I didn’t want to fumble the ball. Fumbles can be a real turning point,” said Cota.

Cota noted that the lights on the field can make it harder to see the ball as its kicked in the air.

“My focus was really high so I could make sure that I could get where I needed to be,” said Cota, “It was a very hard-fought game!”

On Saturday, the winning continued as the Enosburg Falls High School Volleyball teams hosted Vermont Commons for both boys and girls varsity matches.

“This is the oldest volleyball rivalry in the state, and this match came just a week after the VCS homecoming where Enosburg won two close matches,” explained Enosburg boys’ volleyball coach Jason Robtoy.

The match was also the EFHS boys senior game, and Dawson Wright and Brandon Stanley were both recognized from EFHS. The EFHS teams each earned wins in their matches. The girls won 3-0 (25-11, 25-6, 25-19) and the boys won 3-1 (25-13, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21).

The Lady Hornets earned their victory thanks to strong serving.

Rylee Combs had 9 aces, Randi Barry had 5, and Megan Tardiff added 4.

“The boys’ match was very exciting; both teams played solid cover defense which resulted in many long rallies. Enosburg pulled ahead with consistent serving and strong play at the net,” said Robtoy.

Brandon Stanley led the Hornets with 6 kills and 8 aces. Dawson Wright added 3 aces and 3 assists, and Nathaniel Robtoy contributed 7 assists and 3 aces. Ethan Williams finished out the match with a thunderous kill followed by an ace.

Saturday evening the Enosburg girls’ varsity soccer team hosted Hazen, earning a 3 to 1 win over the visiting team.

“We have a great connection; if I have the ball and see her open it just clicks,” said Sophie, “we always know where the other is on the field!”

“We will remember the posters the boys’ varsity team made for us, the support of the fans, and that we both got to play together,” said Sophie.

The girls also thanked the community for their support.

“We are very thankful for the people who get the lights going and make this such a memorable experience,” said Hannah.

Sophie Burns scored first for Enosburg on an assist by Lacie Reed. Michaela Chase added one with an assist from Dana Elkins, and Laurel Howell scored the final goal unassisted.

“It was a beautiful goal,” said Hannah of her sister’s contribution to the win, “It went right over the goalie into the corner, the upper

Before the homecoming weekend events officially kicked off, the Enosburg High School golf team hosted a homecoming tournament at the Enosburg Falls Country Club on Thursday. The Hornets golf team finished second overall. Chase Joyal finished the tournament at 46, Logan Ploof with 51, and Dylan Wright and Ryan Bryce with 54.

“Chase Joyal had a birdie on the fourth hole, a par four where he scored a three, and Lindsay had a birdie on the sixth hole, a par three where she scored a two,” said Enosburg golf coach Russell LaMantia, noting some of the outstanding play on Thursday.

The team has now earned two first-place finishes and threesecond place finishes.

“It has been an amazing season for us. I am super proud of the team and the hard work that they have put in since the middle of August. I am especially thankful for the amazing support we have received from the community as a whole,” said Lamantia, “Whether it be the staff at the Enosburg Falls Country Club, members of the community who generously donated equipment to the team, or the friends and family members that have shown up and supported the team at the home matches this year.”

Harlan Ray Bellew

MILTON: Harlan Ray Bellew, 85, died peacefully on Saturday September 29, 2018, at the VT Respite House in Colchester.

Harlan was born on September 4, 1933, in Bradshaw, West Virginia, the son of Everett and Amanda (Stanley) Bellew.

On December 14, 1954, Harlan married Betty Norton.

He served in the U.S. Air Force, during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War, retiring in 1973. He also retired from the Essex School Department.

Harlan is survived by his sons Kin Ray Bellew of Milton and Steven Troy Bellew and his wife Sue Powers-Bellew of North Carolina and his daughter Desiree Dawn Bellew of So. Burlington. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, eight greatgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife Betty, in 2009, and his sisters Alice McNally and Loretta Bosel.

A Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at 7pm in the Cornerstone Community Church located on Bombardier Rd. in Milton.

Mr. Billado dedicated his life to protecting and serving his community through law enforcement.

Among his hobbies he enjoyed were carpentry, nature, working with his hands, hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping. He was a member of the Masonic Union Lodge # 62 F & AM of Glover, VT. His family was a very important part of his life.

He is survived by his wife Adelle Billado of Holland, VT, and her daughter Dafney Shufelt of Cape Cod, MA; his daughters Sherry Paquette and her husband Jeremy of Richford, Darlene Billado and her companion Robert Barton of Sheldon, Tammie Lamoureux and her companion Brian Corwell, Sr. of Richford, Mariah Billado of Essex, and Rebecca BilladoMetri and her husband Ramez of Weymouth, MA; by many loved grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Ryan always approached life in a very fast paced manner. He was a great mechanic and could fix anything with ease. Marie-Ange Brodeur ENOSBURG FALLS: MarieAnge Brodeur, age 100, passed away on Monday, October 1, 2018, at the St. Albans Health & Rehab Center.

She was born on November 22, 1917, in Frelighsburg, Quebec, Canada to the late Joseph & Delia (Piette) Tetreault.

Marie grew up in Quebec, and married Sarto R. Brodeur of Granby, Que. on April 22, 1944.

The two moved to the United States in December of 1945, and raised their family in Enosburgh and West Berkshire. Marie was a homemaker for most of her life, but she also worked as a seamstress at the sewing factory for many years. Marie loved to knit, crochet, sew, and make clothes. She was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the Ladies of Sainte Anne. Marie treasured the time she spent with her family and beloved grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Richard Brodeur of Johnson, Robert Brodeur and his wife Eleanor of Milton, Claude Brodeur and his companion Ruth Way of Berkshire, Henriette Emch of St. Albans, Denise HoadleyBrown of Berkshire, and Nicole Herron and her husband Gerald of Enosburgh; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three greatgreat-grandchildren; sisters-inlaw Madeleine Brodeur and Rita Rainville; and several nieces & nephews.

On October 22, 1955, he married Aline Rainville of Franklin, VT who survives him.

Claude and Aline moved to Worcester, VT where he was active in town government.

He served as a town auditor, selectman, school board director, and town moderator. In 1985 they moved to Barre Town, and in 1993 they moved to St. Albans. Claude was a long-time employee for the State of Vermont, where he retired from the Personnel Department as Director of Operations.

Claude was a history buff, an avid Cincinnati Reds baseball fan, and a gifted writer. His guidance and counsel was sought by people from both public and private life.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, their children, Laurence Magnant and his wife Denise, of St. Albans, Dale Magnant of Jericho, Philip Magnant and his wife Kristine, of South Burlington and Julie Campbell and her husband Roger, of Essex Junction; as well as his grandchildren Gwen Magnant, Patrick Magnant, Nicholas Magnant and Alysha Magnant.

Claude is also survived by his brother, David Magnant and his wife Joan, of Essex, along with many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Claude was pre-deceased by his brothers, Royce, Bradley and Thomas.

ST. ALBANS: William H. Button, age 84, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, September 27, 2018, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

He was born in St. Albans on September 21, 1934, to the late Alfred & Jessie (Dennis) Button.

William was a lifelong farmer.

He loved working with cows and always referred to them as “his girls.” He married Arthleen (Larose) in 1979. They raised their family while working at local farms for many years. Arthleen passed away in 2007.

His favorite hobbies included watching westerns, especially Gunsmoke and Bonanza, dreaming about old cars, playing Bingo and scratch tickets, and taking trips to the casino. William’s grandchildren meant the world to him, and they always looked forward to weekends with him.

He married Paule (Thibault) Claude Henry in May of 2010 and lived in the apartments at Holy Angels since Magnant 2012.

He is survived by his wife, Paule ST. This winter work will begin on new wiring, insulation to deaden noise, recovering the walls with sheetrock, and work on the window frames which are all stamped with the initials of H. H. Mower, the man who built the store in 1932.

Recently, a local resident came forward who has the ability to restore the original floors. Money from a grant the historical society has received will help fund that project.

September of 2019 will be a big year for the Sheldon Historical Society. The generous grant they received from the Vermont Arts Council requires that the work scheduled to be done will be

completed by that time.

“When you walk into this room next year you will see it newly illuminated, with clean, wellkept floors, brand new sidewalls, and possibly the beginning of historical displays.”

A decorating committee is already discussing what colors will be used on the inside walls of the building. The committee plans to emulate what they did with the outside, hoping to keep colors true to what they may have been in 1932.

“We want to maintain as much authenticity as possible, but there aren’t a lot of people around who can tell us what it looked like when they walked into the store decades ago.”

Recently, Smith had a conversation with folks who did visit the store in their youth.

Although they didn’t remember the colors of the walls, they did recall other things.

“These people remember walking into Mowers’s store to buy candy when they were young.

Their parents would buy groceries at the store across the street while the kids would come over here for candy.”

Long-time residents remember the long, candy-filled counter that lined one side of Mower’s.

Whether they had money to buy any or not didn’t stop them from gazing at the jars of brightly colored, sugary treats.

Plans for the interior of the building will reflect some of those memories. Smith noted one member of the historical society is an excellent artist who is drawing

up historical photos to help envision the completed building.

“We have thought about putting in an area for the post office, having a conference table, a general store checkout counter and shelves, and displays on wheels.”

The displays on wheels would provide the flexibility to clear the room if needed.

“We will also have a virtual museum in the form of our web page. Thanks to the technology available, we don’t have to be straddled into some of what museums tend to look like. We want to keep things simple in here, relying on electronics to display our collection,” said Smith.

Plans are also in place to create an interactive map to help educate the community about the historical sites in the area, including 25 sites which are located on Route 105.

“We want to incorporate a lot into the museum in a way that doesn’t take up a lot of space,” said Smith.

Agriculture has been dominant in the town of Sheldon from the beginning of its history. Smith explained that the agricultural emphasis will be present in the upper story of the building as well as on the grounds.

“Old farm machinery may be placed on the outside grounds, while counters around the upstairs room may contain primarily agricultural displays that may emphasize the place of agriculture in the history of Sheldon. The downstairs will be the general history area and the upstairs will house the agricultural phase,” said Smith.

• So far the historical society has invested about 1,000 volunteer hours on the project. The grants they have received have required matching investments by members, most often in the form of volunteer labor.

Smith displayed a photo of historical society members working tirelessly on the exterior of the building, most of them in their eighties.

“They took four days of earnest labor to get the front of the building finished,” said Smith.

“We have a handful of people in their middle years who help.

Although I don’t think they know they are making history, they have been making history for the last four years in their investment of time.”

Greenup Day has been the workday of choice for the historical society, and they have welcomed help from anyone who comes. As many as forty townspeople joined the crew the first year.

“It’s all about community,” said Smith.

The community will gain a historical gem in the form of the restored building, but tourists will also benefit from the building and its grounds.

The Lamoille Valley Rail Trail has recently received a grant that will allow it to finish the leg of trail that passes by the Sheldon Historical Society building. The Historical Society, in conjunction with the local school, also plans to put kiosks and signs on Main Street to educate folks about the history of residences on the street.

“This town and this are very rich in history. There are things around here that people probably haven’t even discovered yet,” said Smith.

While the building becomes

the physical hub for the historical society, Smith and the Sheldon Historical Society recognize that the community holds the key to the success of the project.

“We envision that the downstairs will be a historical museum and research center. The upstairs will be a community and historical society meeting room. It really returns it to what it used to be,” said Smith.

The very first store to occupy the building used the upstairs as a dance hall, complete with a stage.

“We are trying to get the building back to doing some of the things it once did. We can’t do them all; we can’t store all of what Sheldon is inside it, but it’s a very good beginning for what we’ve been hoping to do since 1999.”

This Saturday, October 6th, from noon to 4 o’clock, the Sheldon Historical Society will be hosting a community pig roast at the Abbey Pavillion on the Casino Road off from Route 105.

The event represents a big part the Sheldon Historical Society’s mission to see the community gather together.

“We decided to let people know that we wanted to have a big dinner, have a band, and have fun. This is all about a community enjoying time together,” said Smith with a smile, “It doesn’t raise a whole lot of money, but it does let people know who we are and that we’re a part of the community that enjoys a good time.”

have been so many people reaching out to give us donations and help.

It’s pretty emotional to see how many people want to reach out and remember Ada this way.”

The tournament will take place on Sunday, October 7th at 9:00.

Team registration begins at 8:30 and Shedd believes the games will wrap up by 4 pm. Food will be available throughout the day and so will event inspired t shirts.

Ada was a soccer player herself, playing on teams throughout the area.

“She was an incredible soccer player; she played for the Nordic Team, the BFA St. Albans Varsity team, and a Milton League team,” explained Shedd, “She reached a lot of people in several communities in our area. The support from parents and students in all the communities has been amazing. We’ve had help

from people in Milton, Sheldon, Fairfax, Fletcher, Sheldon, and St. Albans.”

Currently, there are five youth teams and eight adult teams (high school and up) signed up for the tournament, and more are welcome to join.

“This tournament is something that the kids and the community can do to take part in to remember Ada,” said Shedd, noting that folks are grateful for an opportunity to do something good in the wake of the tragedy.

Ada was no stranger to the Shedd family, and although she chose to attend high school at BFA St. Albans, the two families were always glad to see each other.

“I remember her as that little girl running around the yard smiling and laughing. She was always a polite and friendly girl. We would see her at games as she got older and she was always so glad to see us.”

Shedd noted that Ada’s sweet nature always showed through.

“She wasn’t the kind of kid that didn’t acknowledge people.

She always took the time to greet people and let them know she cared.”

In the year and a half that Ada attended BFA St. Albans, word of her kindness made its way back to the Shedd family.

“I’ve heard that she was always the person who rooted for the underdog and wanted people to be treated fairly,” said Shedd, “She cared about people.”

Shedd and the other volunteers in charge of the event this Sunday have been deeply moved by the support they’ve received from the community. High school students have volunteered to referee the younger kids’ games and official referees have donated their time for the adult games. Folks have volunteered to help out the day of the event and to bring food and

The question cuts to the core of why Act 46 was so controversial from the start, but board member Oliver Olsen – a key player in the law’s passage during his time as a state representative – argued that the law was written with teeth for a reason.

Earlier legislative attempts to cajole school districts into merging solely through incentives “quite frankly didn’t work,” he said.

School districts that merged voluntarily during earlier phases of Act 46’s implementation did so because they understood the State Board would if they didn’t, he said.

And to exempt school districts who rejected all merger proposals at the ballot box from ultimately consolidating at all would send the wrong message.

“I think there’s an inherent issue of fairness,” he said.

But some board members appeared loath to dismiss votes completely.

“It doesn’t make a difference how many times you voted on that particular question? And how thorough you presented that question to the community?

Because I think it does,” countered board member Mark Perrin.

The State Board will next meet Oct. 17, when it may start making preliminary merger decisions on some of the less complicated and controversial configurations.
