FRANKLIN/BERKSHIRE WATER SYSTEMS BATTLE DROUGHT

By Gregory J. Lamoureux County Courier FRANKLIN: With an abnormally hot summer, the Town of Franklin is seeing a slowdown in the water coming into their resevoir, causing the town to issue a conserve water warning to its users.

Like many postings on the subject nationwide when water becomes a scarsity, the message is to reduce the amount of water being used. From not running the faucet when you’re brushing your teeth to refraining from washing your car at home, locals are asked to do their part in making sure the current water goes as far as it can.

Marshall Ploof, the water district commissioner, spoke on the topic to the County Courier on Wednesday morning, the day after the town issued the notice to about 90 users of the water system.

“At this point we’re just asking people to conserve,” Ploof said.

BASEBALL BAT BEATING SPARKED BY THEFT

Vermont State Police were notified of an assault in Berkshire over the weekend, where the victim had allegedly been hit in the head with a metal baseball bat.

According to police records, officers were told by witnesses what the license plate was of the vehicle the suspect fled in.

That plate would come back to a vehicle owned by John Still of Colton Road in Franklin.

As Vermont State Police responded to the scene, a Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy

responded to Still’s home, ultimately locating him in his vehicle in the driveway.

State Police began investigating the incident, where they learned a man had gone to Neil Kinney’s home on Berkshire Center Road in Berkshire, upset about a theft.

According to witnesses, that man was Still, and he was yelling about some “pot that had been stolen.”

Kinney, who had been in the shower when Still showed up at his residence, came to the front door. That is when he was hit with a baseball bat in the head, tearing his ear off.

An Ambulance transported Kinney to Northwestern Medical Center before ultimately taking

When Still was confronted at his home, he told police he knew why they were there, but declined to make a statement about the incident beyond stating “All I’m going to say is don’t steal from me.”

Still blurted out in court on Tueday, “They stole my chainsaw.”

Still was arrested and later released on conditions to appear in criminal court on Tuesday, at which point Judge Gregory Rainville issued a condition of release of 24 hour curfew with an exception for Still to work, but only to drive directly to work and directly home, stopping only for gas.

If convicted Still faces up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 for the aggrivated assault charge.

Investigators from the Northwest Unit for Special Investigations arrested Trevor Bessette, 39, of Williston for an alleged sexual assault in the winter of 2016-17 in Franklin, according to his court file.

Bessette was accused of sexually assaulting a young family member when the two of them were home alone, at least twice.

The graphic affidavit portrays a history of abuse with Bassette, against multiple female members of his family, and one member of his family, dating back to the 1990s. Not all of the allegations occurred in Franklin County, according to the victim’s account.

Bessette’s daughter contacted police to report the abuse of a fellow family member, according to court files.

The family moved away from their home located at 701 Jones Road in Franklin to Florida, and eventually Kansas City, Kansas before recently moving back to Vermont.

The affidavit spells out a report made to authorities in Kansas, who did not act on it criminally at the time.

Bassette’s wife told the investigator that the incidents were a big misunderstanding.

Bassette denied any knowledge of the incidents, and said if he did something, it would have been in his sleep.

Judge Gregory Rainville orddered Bassette to be held without bail until today, Thursday, September 6th to better assess the possibility of release.

Bessette was charged with two counts of sexual assault with a victim less than 18 in which he was entrusted to protect. Each charge could land the 39 year old in prison for three years to life,

City on September 1st when an officer noticed Michael Mullen, 27, of St. Albans helping someone jumpstart their vehicle.

The officer recognized Mullen, who had been ordered to a 24 hour curfew by the court. The order was for an address in Richmond, not St. Albans.

The officer stopped to confirn the identity of Mullen, but by the time he circled back around, Mullen had moved the vehicle to the other side of the road.

In addition to the court order for 24 hour curfew, Mullen was also ordered not to drive a vehicle without a valid driver’s license, which the officer discovered was not valid because of an insurance violation.

Mullen told police that his 24 hour curfew was changed to a St. Albans address when he moved.

He also told the officer that he was just helping his girlfriend move her vehicle to the other side of the street so it wouldn’t get a ticket.

He was arrested and arraigned on Tuesday.

According to his court file, Mullen had previously been arrested in Rutland County in July of 2017 for marijuana possession, operating with a suspended license, and possession of cocaine.

Police also located about 1 ounce of marijuana in Mullen’s pocket when he was arrested on

In April of this year, ground was broken for Vermont’s first separate ambulatory surgical care for treatments other than laser eye surgery. The Colchester facility will compete with more traditional providers, promising to reduce wait times and lower the cost of care.

By carefully encouraging more competition, state government will also promote accountability – and provide Vermonters with more choices, lower costs and better outcomes.

Solving high health care costs took a major step backward when the legislature legalized the use of recreational marijuana in 2018.

While our state continues to contend with the terrible human and financial cost of the opioid crisis, our health care system will now face a rising demand on emergency rooms as a result of more highway accidents, the tragedy of more babies affected by marijuana use during pregnancy, and rising mental health issues.

The effects of marijuana legalization as enacted will squander the gains we’re making in other areas in health care. It is time to send a different message to the public, and I hope to be part of a change that moves us in a better direction.

RiseVT in particular and the Community Partners as a collective are working within Franklin County to help all of us to maintain healthy lifestyles and decrease the need for expensive medical care.

The opening of the St Albans hub which provides services to individuals caught in the opiate crisis has increased the opportunity to handle the cost this crisis has imposed on the health care system.

This office has eased the challenges of transportation and waiting list status that existed for clients who wished to recover from their addictions.

Prescription drugs have not only been a driver in the opiate crisis but also in the escalating cost of our medical care. The possibility of importing less expensive prescriptions from Canada and other measures to drive down drug costs were addressed in S92 which was signed by Governor Scott.

He has continued a cost containment experiment labeled Pay for Performance that began under Governor Shumlin. Under this plan, to be phased in through 2022, health plans pay health care providers based on how well they

A CALL FOR BETTER MEDICAL COVERAGE

I’m writing as part of of the “can do” generation of veterans about our dwindling “can’t do” Democracy.

At 3 legislative breakfasts I challenged our representatives to justify the cuts to social services without corresponding tax cuts!

Although this veteran survived the devastating Tet Offensive in Vietnam my life nearly ended on my kitchen floor on July 6th as a “death by benign neglect” due to cuts to veterans healthcare and social services. The cause of my near death experience was undiagnosed septic pneumonia. I was so weak I couldn’t even sit up.

Because I live alone my life was spared by “dumb luck.” All of my health complaints over a year fell on deaf ears. The Rescue Squad took me to Northwest Medical where I was correctly diagnosed and pumped full of antibiotics that brought me back from the brink of death. Kudos to Northwest Medical for their save. Because emergency care is so expensive I elected to be discharged after 3 days when it would have been prudent to stay another day. I feared becoming bankrupt.

As a legally blind veteran I talked with rep Murphy who is on the transportation committee about the need for transportation for the blind and found her to be very cold and unhelpful. For this reason I hope that voters will not reelect her. Getting to necessary medical appointments is problematic for veterans who have to depend on charity to get to medical appointments.

During convalesence I’ve found the services of the Visiting Nurses, the home aid program and meals on wheels to be problematic. Visiting Nurses refused me because I wasn’t on the verge of falling, home aid told me my house was too messy and meals on wheels insisted that I be home between 10 am and 2 pm for deliveries.

Getting a haircut thru home aid is not permitted.

Because I’m lucky to be alive I feel the obligation to warn others who may be abandoned in their time of need. I nearly joined the 200 most recent veterans who died

waiting for adequate healthcare.

When our military, Germany, who lost WWII, and Great Britain can provide healthcare for all why can’t we? The time has come to consider Senator Sanders Medicare for all proposal.

I am documenting my health concerns so that should I die there will be an audit trail to prevent other deaths. Finally the public must be made to realize that “Thank you for your service”, while welcome, is an expression of appreciation not a benefit.

As kids, we grew up in the business and where taught that growing a business took a lot of hard work and dedication. Growing a business isn’t easy and in Vermont over the past few years its become even harder. We are constantly being barraged with new and more onerous taxes and regulations that cost us the resources needed to hire more people. We struggle to find people in the workforce who can do the work that we need done. We don’t complain but it is time that State Government does something to allow us as entrepreneurs the ability to do what we do best.

That is why I am supporting Corey Parent for State Senate.

Corey understands the impact a seemly small decision in Montpelier can make on our businesses. He grew up in a small business owned by his father and now works with small businesses in his private sector career. He knows what it takes for us to grow jobs and our economy. I meet with Corey a few weeks ago, he came out and sat down with me for a few hours. He spent the time talking to me about the future and where I saw our State and County going.

I can tell you - if we are to have a better and brighter future we need Corey Parent in the State Senate fighting for us.

COUNTY CANDIDATES’ FUNDING RACE TOPS $104K COUNTY-WIDE

By Gregory J. Lamoureux County Courier There are 26 candidates vying for 13 seats representing Franklin County in the Senate and House. Those 26 candidates report $104,604.44 in donations, but several candidates have yet to file a campaign finance report, signifying their campaigns have yet to hit the $500 threshold required to begin raising money.

FRANKLIN SENATE CANDIDATES

RANDY BROCK (R) Brock reported raising a total of $4,681.00 since the beginning of his campaign, from nine donors. Seven of those donors contributed more than $100, making their contributions public. Those donors are LKQ Corporation ($250), WestRock ($1,000), Vermont Chiropractic Association ($500), Politically Active Contractors of VT ($500), Lenore Broughton ($1,530), Mary Evslin ($500), Casella Waste Management ($300).

MARY BEERWORTH (R) Beerworth has raised $5,260 this campaign cycle, coming from nine donors. The rest of her public donations consist of Denise Vallee ($1,020), RM Vallee ($1,020), Tom Breuer ($1,000), Lenore Broughton ($1,020), Carol Breuer ($1,000).

BARBRA MURPHY (I) This is the third campaign that Murphy has run, not filing a single campaign finance report in that time, indicating that she has not raised or spent more than $500 on any one of her campaigns.

JAMES FITZGERALD (R) Fitzgerald has not filed a report since August 15th, but that filing indicated he has raised $3,114.41 since the beginining of his campaign.

Northwestern Medical Center is pleased to welcome Dr. Anna Royer to the team at Northwestern Associates in Surgery. She is a board-certified general surgeon who trained in Tennessee but returns to her roots in New England, having grown up in western Maine.

It is hard to believe that Ron is no longer with us; however, everyone’s support has made it much easier for us to continue on.

The water system for Franklin is fed by a spring, that spring was rebuilt in the 1990s to better accomodate the town. According to Ploof, when workers rebuilt the tile, they dug down about 15 feet before hitting ledge. That ledge had a crack in it which was spewing water faster than they could measure it.

“It was coming out full force, just the size of my arm,” said Ploof.

Quality Service at a Reasonable Price

That spring fills a 225,000 cement holding tank just off the Jones Road on the West side of the village. The subterranean structure is about the same size as the town’s Fire Station, Ploof said.

The water is meant to overflow at 11 feet, but according to Ploof the water supply has slowed, under the usage of the village, causing the water level to drop to about 10 feet.

This is not a once in a lifetime issue, according to Ploof, who has overseen the water distribution for the village for about 40 years, “We see this ever 10-15 years.”

The Resevoir was engineered to hold enough water for 8-10 days of usage, according to Ploof, under regular water consumption.

That means an average usage of about 17 gallons per minute. Ploof estimated the spring’s production

right now is around 5-6 gallons per minute.

Customers will not see a difference in their water bills, as the town does not meter water.

Instead they charge a flat rate of $150 per customer, every six months.

With no precise way to measure how much water is being used, it is really hard to tell how long the water will last, according to Ploof.

If Mother Nature is kind, the water will come back quicker. Ploof also noted the longer term forecast for water may be good, as some models for predicting the path of tropical storm depressions have put the rains from Hurricane Gordon traveling through the midwest and possibly over Vermont.

If you talk to longtime residents of Franklin, they’ll tell you about an old theory that they’d have

water from their spring as long as it rained on Mount Mansfield.

Ploof couldn’t confirm that, but did say that seemed to ring true most of the time.

The system was designed as a water supply for fire suppression in addition to potable water for homes, but Ploof, who is also a Franklin Firefighter, said the department would shy away using hydrants if there are other ways to get water to a fire.

“We have a big lake,” Ploof said in respect to fire suppression, “We’ll call other departments for help and we’ll truck it in,” Ploof also noted that as long as the water is in the system, it could be used in the event they needed it to save lives.

As for the immediate future, the town will begin looking at other ways to supply water to its

residents if the water level falls to the halfway mark in the tank. Ploof said that is not optimal though because a boil water notice would likely have to be put in place for any water that is trucked in.

It’s not just Franklin that is contending with drought conditions, the East Berkshire Water District has been trucking in water since July to keep the spigots on for their customers.

Berkshire’s system provides water to a few less connections than Franklin. They also don’t have a school, library, or retirement home, or other large water consumers like Franklin is contending with, but according to Andrew Frappier, Berkshire’s water problems have never been this bad.

care for their patients and contain costs, rather than on how many services they provide.

I can help facilitate the solution to high health care costs by my support of these programs as they show success. The solution is not going to be found in any one effort but through many changes.

We need Medicare and Medicaid to be able to negotiate drug prices to lower the cost of prescriptions. We need to lower administrative costs associated with the insane for-profit insurance industry. It’s no surprise that the widely publicized Mercatus report found that a “Medicare for All� system could save $2 trillion over the current system. Every developed country except for the United States has implemented some form of publicly-financed healthcare for all. They largely have better outcomes and spend less money per capita on healthcare than we do.

In Vermont, we can focus on incremental reforms that make healthcare more affordable. First, efforts at promoting wellness like RiseVT should keep people healthier. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and we should encourage this innovative approach to lifestyle medicine.

Second, we should continue on the path away from “fee for service� billing toward a system that rewards positive outcomes. While we failed to get to a Single Payer system in Vermont 4 years ago, we did bend the cost curve with the work done by the Green Mountain Care Board and providers across the state.

Lastly, I’m interested in the continued conversation about Universal Primary Care as an interim step. Can we create a model for Primary Care that covers more people and saves us all money? Can we provide more predictability and higher quality services at a lower cost? I think it’s possible with the right plan, although a lot of work remains to be done.

Ultimately, we need a national fix to our healthcare woes to truly solve the problem of lowering cost while increasing access and quality.

I won’t stop working on these issues until everyone has access to affordable, quality healthcare.

There are three parts that constitute “health care cost:� The first is the actual cost of the care at a doctor’s office, in a hospital, etc.; the second is the cost of the health insurance such as the cost of the premium, deductable, co-pay and balance billing; and the third is the government programs of Medicaid (including Dr. Dynasaur), and Medicare which are not “insurance� but a government mandated fee. The media and public use “health care costs� interchangeably to describe all three of these aspects of our health care costs. Vermont’s actual costs of the care received are lower than many other parts of the country.

The insurance rates, however, are much higher. One of the driving factors in causing these high insurance rates is the “cost shift’ put onto health insurance premiums because Medicaid and Medicare don’t pay enough to cover the total expense of the care provided. For example, if a procedure costs $100, with Medicaid the State would pay $20, the federal government would pay $30 and the balance of $50 would go unpaid. (This is just the expenses of providing the care, not the profit or margin or fund balance - the salaries, equipment, heat, electricity, supplies, etc.). This results in a “cost shift� to cover this expense to someone else, usually the commercial insurance or private pay patient. Medicare also has a “cost shift� factor. It is a hidden tax that the government imposes on its programs for the rest of us to subsidize. With the expansion of these government programs over the past 25 years, the cost shift has increased. According to Kevin Mullin, the chair of the Green Mountain Care Board, 40% of our insurance premiums are due to this cost shift from unpaid government programs. Other factors that contribute to increasing costs of care and our health insurance is the aging demographic of Vermonters, and the scarcity of licensed health care professionals who earn high wages. Ideally we can lower our costs by staying healthy longer and not needing to receive health care. Our insurance premiums and their related costs could be lower if we did not have the government “cost shift.� However, to have government programs pay their fair share of the true expenses, we all would need to pay higher taxes. Rationing care, closing or consolidating health care facilities and capitation are options to save money. Unfortunately, these choices are not easy.

First, there is the cost charged to the patient (or their insurance company) by the provider of the service, be it a physician, hospital, etc.. The second major component is the cost of the premiums paid to the health insurance companies. It is often the insurance premiums that I hear the most complaints about and the area that my reply is focused on. I am not saying that the cost of the service by the health care providers is not expensive, it is but the last I knew is that these costs in Vermont are in line with the regional and national averages. In fact at one point several years ago was ranked at 46th out of the 50 states for health care provide cost.

So back to the insurance premiums side of health care costs. There are many sources of information available on the web comparing health insurance cost by state. This can be very confusing but it is clear that the average cost per month to Vermonter for their health insurance coverage is well

above the national average. So we have one of the cheapest health care provider costs but one of the highest insurance costs. There is something terribly wrong here. Of course Vermont has only two insurance companies providing health insurance coverages. This was not always the case; at one point about 30 years ago we had well over 30 companies providing this coverage.

During the administration of Gov. Howard Dean, Vermont adopted the community rating for health insurance thereby causing a massive exodus of insurers from the state, to the point we are at the two companies (and lack of competition) to serve the state.

What can be done? First allow residents of Vermont to purchase their health insurance from across state lines. We can buy our homeowners, automobile and life insurance from companies in other states, why not our health insurance? This will begin to open up competition. Secondly, we should begin to roll back the “community rating� philosophy as well as to allow individuals to pick and choose what coverage they want. Lastly, we need to abolish the Green Mountain Care Board and place the administration of health insurance back to the Department of Financial Regulation.

Finally, there needs to be less government intrusion in the health care industry, both the insurance and health care providers.

Universal primary care will allow patients to see a primary care doctor of their choice with no charge. It would reduce the need for patients to visit emergency rooms which is very expensive. Access to primary care will prevent diseases and other medical conditions earlier. Our state needs to find unique solutions to reduce health care costs. It would help working families in Franklin County. Universal primary care is where we should start.

The Vermont legislature during this past session, after Congress voted to repeal the part of Obamacare that mandated citizens to purchase unwanted health insurance, past a new Healthcare law REQUIRING Vermonters to PURCHASE health insurance, even if they choose not to. The reason?

The costs to the Vermont healthcare system are unsustainable, and are projected to remain so, even with the new purchase mandate.

In order for Vermonters to receive their needed healthcare from doctors hospitals and pharmacies, private sector insurance must be the driving force through competition.

People receiving economic state assistance, as well as the working poor, already receive medical coverage through Medicaid, a federal program paid for by taxpayers, while retirees receive their coverage through Medicare, a government run program, primarily paid for by those retirees receiving medical benefits, but supplemented by the federal government because of prior illegal actions taken by Congress.

The reason Medicare is projected to be unsustainable over time is because CONGRESS ILLEGALLY RAIDED THE MEDICARE LOCK BOX many years ago and borrowed (STOLE) retirees money, which has NEVER BEEN REPAID! Because of this theft, the Medicare system is in financial jeopardy.

My continual reassessing and evolving solution is for the Federal government to loosen its grip on the private medical sector to allow people to decide for themselves the type and extent of healthcare coverage they need and can afford.

Federal government mandates on citizens must be removed and they must REPAY the STOLEN LOCK BOX$$$ to MEDICARE.

“The day was beautiful. Renee had 22 teams present and Randy Swainbank did a great job setting up the brackets for the teams. The silent auction was excellent,” said Brigham, detailing some of the key points of the event, “This is only going to grow—it will be as big as Renee wants it to be.”

Brigham was pleased to see so many come out to support the Pattee family and enjoy a day of soccer.

“There were tons of young kids playing; the majority of the teams, 17 of the 22 were kids; it was a fitting way to honor Colby,” explained Brigham, “Soccer, was his sport.”

Hosting an event the size of the Kickin’ it for Colby Jamboree takes a lot of time and effort and requires lots of organization. Chris Brigham, Athletic Director at Enosburg Junior and Senior High School praised Pattee and her team of volunteers for the success of the event.

“I’ve known Renee as a coach here and she is always on the ball.

She had everything covered for the Jamboree,” said Brigham, “It was the most organized event I’ve seen.

The word that would encapsulate the whole thing was that it was a perfect event. The weather is something no one can control; thankfully, the day proved to be a good one and the teams could play in comfortable temperatures,

against each other and teams made up of players 13 and older played one another. There were six teams comprised of players over the age of thirty who competed in the jamboree.

“We wanted to do something that could have the little kids playing with the big kids and soccer allows for that,” said Pattee.

Support from the community the day of the Jamboree gave Pattee time to take in all the good things that were happening.

“I had fifty people who had volunteered their time to come and help. We designated people to each part of the event, and I could just walk our dog Sparky and enjoy the event.”

The Pattee family chose Hunt of a Lifetime to receive the money they raised in Memory of Colby, knowing it would be something Colby would have approved of.

They were also glad to bring awareness to a great organization.

“I have had five people come to me thinking that the Hunt of a Lifetime was for just anyone, they didn’t know it was for terminally ill people,” said Pattee, “Hunt of a Lifetime was represented at Kickin’ it for Colby. They were able to help educate people about the organization.”

Hunt of a Lifetime began after the founder’s son was diagnosed with leukemia. He wanted to go on a moose hunt, and thanks to the support of the 800 people in the community near the hunting area the family planned to visit, the boy was able to go and enjoy his hunt.

He passed away some time later.

Kickin’ it for Colby has raised $19,000 for Hunt of a Lifetime thanks to the generosity of the community.

“The support from the community has been amazing.

Knowing that these kids can go out and enjoy a fishing trip or a hunt, that they can get out and do what they want to do means so much to us,” said Pattee, who has recently signed on as a volunteer for Hunt

Family and friends of Colby Pattee hosted the first Kickin’ it for Colby soccer jamboree fundraiser in his memory.

Twenty-two soccer teams signed up to play to raise money for Hunt of a Lifetime in honor of Colby.

Hunt of a Lifetime gives hunting and fishing trips to children 21 years and under who are battling life threatening illnesses.

Before Colby passed unexpectedly in December of 2017, he attended a White Tails Unlimited dinner. At the dinner he heard about Hunt of a Lifetime and it left a lasting impression on his young heart.

“When Colby learned about Hunt of a Lifetime, he was in tears at the thought that there were kids who were sick and couldn’t go on a hunt because they couldn’t afford it due to medical bills,” said Renee Pattee, Colby’s mother, “We take so much for granted, and it’s the little things that we don’t think of. For an 11 year old to think about that and understand it, was impressive.”

BOBWHITES ROLL CVU IN FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON The Bobwhites rolled to a 37 to 6 victory over host team CVU on Saturday.

“We graduated some very good players last year. We had four in the Shrine game and a couple guys playing college, but we had a lot of guys come back. We have guys

that a re a little green, and we had a lot of work to do on our offensive line. They are getting better every day and learning to communicate with each other. I felt that our energy and speed were very good in the first half. It was good to get the lead and build some

The Bobwhites will face MMU on Friday night at home.

“They have everybody back and they are going to be very excited.

League-wide everyone is talking about them and as they should be.

It will be a real test for us. They are a play-off caliber team,” said Murray.

Always patient and always looking at both the big picture and the immediate battle, Murray spoke with his classic wisdom.

“This season is a marathon.

It’s really like eight little seasons.

We have a short week next week and we need to get to work,” said Murray.

businesses we never approached.

We had enough baked goods to feed Franklin county, the Pulled Pork from 242 Texas BBQ was outstanding, we were able to help some people with our soccer swap, and we had a doggie pool/Kiddie pool for those that needed a dip.”

“Enosburg Ambulance was there and Cathy Emch and Melissa Archambault took pictures. Hunt of A lifetime was able to help those with any questions they had about what they were supporting and they did a 50/50 Raffle which Kathy Benoit won and donated

back to Hunt of a lifetime.

Franklin County Whitetails sold raffle tickets for a Mossburg .308 and a Parker Crossbow and tickets for the Whitetails Unlimited Banquet being held on Sept 8th,” said Pattee.

“We were thankful for the tents put up by Dave Stetson and family and Duane Stetson; thanks to the Enosburg Boosters for the use of the Snack Shack. We had music, fun and lots of laughter. I have a happy heart, and I would like to thank every single one of you that made my day so happy. I know I

am forgetting something and some people but please know I very grateful.”

Pattee is already thinking about next year and how she can make the Jamboree even better than it was this year.

“My heart was happy to see all those people out playing and enjoying life during the day,” said Pattee, “To see them come together and laugh—there was no rivalry—they wanted to enjoy the day and remember Colby.”

COMETS HONOR ADA

Saturday, September 1st, the Comets and the Milton Yellow Jackets faced off under the lights at Collins Perley Sports Complex, but before the game began, the two teams took time to remember Ada Sorensen who passed last year. The following message was read in her honor.

“The Comets will play this season in memory of Ada Sorensen.

We all miss her positivity and kindness on and off the field. Ada will always be a part of our Comet Family and the BFA Community.”

After the message, members of both teams released balloons in Ada’s honor and presented game balls to Ada’s parents. A letter from Ada’s parents was read to the crowd.

Milton earned a 2-1 win in overtime.

Richford hosted Winooski in their season opener and the Rockets walked away with a three to one win to start the season.

“We were ready and we were organized. The girls also displayed some good teamwork,” said Richford head coach Liza Bordo.

“We were glad to see the girls playing and having fun and taking the direction that we gave them.

They know that if they don’t understand something they can come to us and ask and we will always be looking to communicate with them,” said Bordo, “and that happened today. After the half, we discussed what we did, what they saw, what worked, and what we could improve on. We agree to make the changes we need to.”

HORNETS OVERTAKE THUNDERBIRDS The Enosburg girls’ soccer team earned a 4 to 0 win against MVU on Saturday.

Enosburg’s Erin Diette scored with an assist from Lacie Reed and Michaela Chase scored an unassisted goal for the final goal of the game.

Alison Dash of Enosburg had seven saves while Emily King of MVU had nine.

“Alison Dash made several big saves in the second half, despite seeing very limited action in the first,” explained Enosburg coach

Jason Hart.

“This was an excellent team effort from the Hornets today,” said Hart, “Sophie Burns controlled the middle of the field for most of the game. Erin Diette turned in a standout effort on the left flank, well earning her goal in the 14th minute. Michaela Chase closed the game by lofting an absolutely gorgeous free kick off the far post and under the crossbar, from just outside the 18 on the right side.”

Dylan Wright, Logan Ploof, Chase Joyal, and Ryan Bryce competed in the golf tournament in Orleans.

Ryan Bryce, Chase Joyal, and Logan Ploof filled all three top spots in Thursday’s golf tournament in Orleans.

Bryce finished first with 53, Joyal with 55, and Ploof with 57. Dylan Wright, the fourth contributor, had 66. The boys finished with a team score of 231 and the girls finished with a team score of 127. Lindsay Westcome had 61 and Katherine Smith had 66.

In high school golf, a team must have four scorers to earn a placement in a tournament.

“I didn’t play my best, but there was a Par 5 that went back toward the Cslubhouse that was a Par 2. I was looking to get an Eagle put, but I didn’t get it. I did end up parring that, and that made me happy and helped me to relax,” said Bryce, whose score secured him the rank of tournament champion on Thursday.

Chase Joyal competed in his first high school golf tournament on Thursday, and the second place finish was a boost of confidence

for him.

“The last three holes I was shooting three over. If I’d been shooting that good the whole time I might have been in the high forties,” said Joyal, “The last hole I definitely did my best. I had a 320 yard drive.”

Joyal, who also plays baseball for Enosburg, has enjoyed the time on the green, even though he joked that his baseball swing may suffer this spring.

“When you play golf you always get to play; it’s really enjoyable,” said Joyal.

Logan Ploof, the third place finisher on Thursday, and a sophomore at Enosburg High School, was also competing in his first high school golf tournament.

“I’ve been playing since I was little, but this was my first year playing at school. It’s a really relaxed season. Coach Jeff is really relaxed and teaches us well. He’s a really good teacher,” said Ploof.

Kathleen E. Anderson PORTLAND, OR: Kathleen E. Anderson, age 74, passed away August 31, 2018, in Portland, Oregon.

Kathleen was born on September 9, 1943, in Washington D.C. to Katherine and Sumner Anderson.

She attended high school in Hyattsville, Maryland, and graduated from the University

of Maryland with a degree in English. Directly out of college, she worked as a reporter for Roll Call, a newspaper on Capitol Hill that covers Washington D.C. news.

Shortly thereafter, she spent the mid1960s traveling in Europe with her close friend Anne Marie (Schlegel) Schadinger. Both women learned to ski in Germany, which brought them to Jay Peak upon their return to the United States. Kathy soon met her husband-to-be, Barry Anderson, and settled in Montgomery Center for the next 34 years.

During her time in Montgomery, Kathy raised a daughter, restored a farmhouse, lost her husband, and welcomed travelers into her renovated barn and guest suite. She may be best remembered as the fourth grade teacher at Berkshire Elementary School for over 30 years where she brought creativity, enthusiasm, and innovation to the classroom. She was especially passionate about geography and immersed her students in culture and nature studies. She was equally committed to imparting a love of reading. She was known to dress like characters from children’s books and lead her students in

literary theater. Her dedication to creative, impassioned teaching has touched many students’ lives across Franklin County.

Her friends and family will perhaps most remember Kathy for both her laughter and her sense of adventure. Her home was always a warm and welcome place for friends to stop by, have a cup of coffee, and share a story. But when she wasn’t baking muffins and keeping the home fires burning, she was out exploring the world.

Upon her retirement from Berkshire Elementary, Kathy went on to teach at international schools in Colombia, Thailand, Indonesia, and China.

After almost ten more years as an educator, Kathy finally retired for real in Portland to be closer to her daughter. Although her long struggle with Alzheimer’s began too early, she maintained a positive outlook on life and continued to enjoy the small things, like sunshine and chocolate.

Kathy is survived by her daughter, Sarah Anderson, her son-in-law David Schonfeld and her grandson, Sawyer Anderson all of Portland Oregon; her brother-in-law, Bobby Anderson and his wife Patricia McDermott of Montgomery; and her cousin Celia Metz of Clinton, Washington.

A Memorial Service will be held at Pratt Hall in Montgomery at 2pm on Sunday, October 14th.

Rita Ann Fay St. Albans: Rita Ann Fay, 68, passed away Saturday, September 1, 2018, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Laure and Jeffery Allard in Fairfield.

Born in St. Albans, January 23, 1950, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Gladys (McKinney) Fay. Rita attended elementary school and Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans. Prior to her retirement, she was employed at the former Fletcher Allen Hospital for several years.

She greatly enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and gardening.

She leaves her daughter Laure Allard and her husband Jeffrey of Fairfield, her son, David Button, Jr and his wife Anne of Berkshire, two grandchildren, Jessica and Jacob Allard, two step-grandchildren, Megan and Kole Gazaille, her sister-in-law, Donna (Frazier) Fay of Fairfax, plus several nieces,

Lorraine J. Garland, age 67, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, August 30, 2018, at the University of Vermont Medical Center.

She was born in Pittsfield, MA, December 23, 1950, daughter of the late Donald and Isabel (Larche) Boutin. On November 21, 1970, she married Michael Garland. Lorraine worked in many different capacities in her life, to include a computer programmer for business software, and as an elementary school teacher.

Her enjoyments included going to flea markets, garage sales, making jewelry, traveling, and most important to her was spending time with her grandchildren and her puppy Gypsy.

Lorraine is survived by children, Dana Wesson and husband Scott Wesson of Waterville, and Regan Perry of Fairfax, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, her brothers Kenneth Boutin and wife Melanie of Georgia; John Boutin and wife Marivic of Virginia Beach, VA; Neal Boutin and wife Cathy of Merritt Island, FL; Alan Boutin of Fairfax; her sisters Joan Sparks and husband Robert of Fairfax; Pauline Boutin of St Albans; Pamela Vecchitto and husband Bill of Lakewood, WA; Patricia Merritt and husband Wade of Fairfax; and Mary Combs and husband Orval of Fairfax. Natalie “Nan” O. Guilmette ENOSBURG FALLS: Natalie “Nan” O. Guilmette, age 92, passed away with her family by her side on Tuesday, September 4, 2018, at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington.

She was born on February 28, 1926, in Enosburg Falls to the late Roland & Alice (Phillips) Messier.

Nan graduated from Richford High School. She married Richard Guilmette on October 12, 1946, and they made their home in Enosburg Falls. Nan was an active member of the community for many years. She served in several different municipal roles including Assistant Town Clerk and Village Treasurer, was an active member of the Enosburg Falls United Methodist Church, and a founding member of the board of directors for the Enosburg Falls Country Club.

She also worked as a bookkeeper for Wetherbee’s Hardware for several years. Her favorite hobbies included playing golf and cribbage, sewing and knitting in her younger years, and most importantly, spending time with her beloved friends and family.

She is survived by her children, Paula Pettis and her husband John of Vergennes, Mark Guilmette and his wife Carol of Enosburgh, and Dean Guilmette and his wife Michelle of Franklin; five grandchildren, Erin Musser, Katherine Gregg and her husband Jason, Jessie Guilmette and her significant other, Ryan Ledbeater, Nick Guilmette and his significant other, Lacy Walker,

Colleen Kissane ST. ALBANS BAY/ GEORGIA: The family of Colleen Kissane sadly announce that our mother, grandmother, great grandmother, step-mother and beautiful friend passed away Thursday evening at the UVM Medical Center surrounded by her family. She was 93.

Born Colleen Shirley Miller June 20, 1925, in Fitch Bay, Quebec, the 6th of seven children to Benjamin Franklin Miller and Mae Thompson Miller. She grew up in Rock Island, Quebec and graduated from Bugbee Business School at Stansted College.

In 1945, mom married Morton Cushing, a U.S. Customs Officer working in Derby Line, Vermont.

Dad began teaching school in

Morrisville in the fall of 1945, later relocating to Essex Junction where he began his legal career. Mom and Dad moved to St. Albans in 1952 where they raised their three children. Dad passed away in 1963.

Mom later married John Kissane.

They had a wonderful life together for more than 30 years. John passed away in 2005 and Mom began a new journey residing in her home on St. Albans Bay. Mom was passionate about skiing, dancing, tennis, writing, traveling and being fiercely independent.

Mom learned to ski on a pair of skis made by her brother Rudy on the hills near Stansted College. Mom continued to ski into her 80’s with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She rarely missed an annual “Bill and Burt” ski trip to various locations out west and skied the Alps in Switzerland and Austria.

She told many stories of her life growing up in Rock Island and Stanstead during the depression and war years. Her father passed away when she was quite young and her mother, Mae Miller, with British resolve, raised seven children, keeping them fed from a large garden, back yard raised chickens, and taking in borders. Her brother Howard “Tarz” Miller served in the Canadian Army from 1939 - 1945.

Every evening the Miller household was tuned to the BBC. Mom worked at the Royal Bank of Canada before moving to Vermont.

She also worked as bookkeeper for the Windridge Tennis Center in Jeffersonville, Vermont.

She loved dancing and was usually the first and sometimes only person on the dance floor when the music started. For many years she could be seen kicking high in the chorus line of Cardiac Capers.

Her brother Tarz was her hero growing up and gave her the security she needed at a young age.

She loved our father but seemed to love her father-in-law more for his kindness, welcoming her into a new life experience.

John Kissane was the love of her life. They shared many years together giving each other the freedom to pursue life’s adventures.

She was predeceased by her sisters Elaine Gibson, Geraldine Coade and Beverly Kalf and three brothers, Rudy, Stanley and Howard; Her husband’s Morton Cushing and John Kissane.

Mom leaves behind her children, Jean Hutchinson and her husband John, Sarah Cushing, and Steve Cushing and wife Cindy Deyak.

Grandchildren Steve Hutchinson, Ann Hutchinson Yagerline and her husband John, Lara Cushing Robtoy and husband Jason, Emma Cushing and her husband Randy Holowaty, Sara Cushing, and Michael Deyak.

Cecile P. Nutting ENOSBURGH: Cecile P. Nutting, age 103, passed away on Sunday, September 2, 2018, at her home in Enosburgh.

She was born on March 2, 1915, in Berkshire to the late Herbert & Glenna (Jacobs) Ryea.

Cecile attend school in Berkshire and on March 31, 1932, she married Ernest Nutting. After they got married Cecile and Ernest farmed in Jay, VT, for several years before they moved to North Troy. They lived in Brattleboro, and in parts of New Hampshire before settling in Enosburgh in 1982. Cecile worked for American Optical in Brattleboro.

She had many hobbies which included, gardening, bird watching, completing puzzles, listening to country music, and traveling with her family. Cecile was always family oriented and she looked forward to hosting Sunday night dinners, where no one ever left hungry.

She is survived by her children, Dorothy Booth of North Troy, Ernest Nutting of Mountain Home, ID, Ernestine Parker and her partner Jan Reinus of Eddieville, KY, Sandra Thompson and her husband Richard

Chreston Calvin Rabtoy

in Burlington. He was born in Springfield on December 11, 1945, to Calvin Rabtoy and the late Donaldeen (Martin) Rabtoy.

Chreston was proud to have served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era. He was a well driller by trade, loved woodworking with his basement full of woodworking tools. He was an avid hunter who loved to be with his family in the Fairfax woods. Chreston enjoyed all types of fishing especially deep sea fishing when he was younger.

He would always make his doctors and nurses laugh during his illness and he never went anywhere without his favor ite John Deere hat. He also enjoyed little children and for many years played Santa Claus for them at Fairfax concerts held at the school, with Mrs. Claus by his side.

receive huge campaign donations from the health care industry’s sectors, health insurance, pharmaceutical, medical technology, and Pharmacy Benefits Management companies. We need politicians at the federal level to stop serving the medical industry at the expense of We the People.

One major factor in high health insurance costs is that we spend over $128 billion a year in excess administrative costs. More than half of those administrative costs are for marketing and underwriting, costs that don’t exist in any model of the many existing single-payer systems.

This is a national issue that causes tremendous stress in Vermonters’ lives. Forced coverage, high premiums and deductibles mean people struggle to pay for insurance that they cannot actually afford to use. Household budgets are broken and medical issues remain untreated.

As a state, Vermont can only make small fixes and apply band-aids.

Two examples from this year are: twenty five percent of the time, medication cost more as an insurance copay than if you buy it directly. Pharmacists have been forced to sign gag rules that prohibit them from telling customers about the more affordable option.

Vermont banned these gag orders in May of this year. Canadian prescriptions drugs cost an average of 30% less than identical US medications. Vermont passed a 2018 law allowing import and use of Canadian drugs, despite the pharmaceutical industry lobbying hard against the law and spending millions on false advertisements claiming Canadian drugs are not as safe.

If I am elected and I have an opportunity to work on the Health Care Committee, I will look for more ways to save Vermonters money and increase their access to healthcare.

For example: If you went into a store to buy a loaf of bread and everyone was paying a different price, with different kinds of money, the store would need many more people working behind the counter to figure this all out, right? You’re not just paying for the cost of the bread but for all those other people needed to figure out what YOU, specifically, will pay for the bread.

It makes no sense. By simplifying our health care system we will save tremendously and be able to apply this wasted money to the actual care of Vermonters instead of spending it on administrative costs that don’t help us at all.

We started with one clinic in Richford and now operate six clinics, two dental practices, a pharmacy, and healthy day camps for children. The mission of NOTCH is to “serve the under served”. The clinics offer sliding fee scales for those who need financial help and discounts to those who have co pays.Ideally, we should have more of these clinics in more communities for easier access by patients.

The second, and maybe most important way, to cut costs is early prevention. Medicaid and insurance companies are encouraging annual wellness visits and physicals as a way to detect early issues. More prevention programs such as free longevity exercise classes, nutrition training, diabetes clinics and wellness appointments should be offered in all communities. Early prevention of disease, both medical and dental, will ease the costs later on. And of course, the high cost of drugs needs to be evaluated.

We can start cutting cost for Vermonters by investing in publicly funded Universal Primary Care so that people don’t hesitate to get care when they need it. Remember; if you take care of the little things the big things don’t happen. Big things cost a lot of money! Primary care is 6% of our total healthcare spending; half of that is already publicly funded through Medicare and Medicaid. Primary care is where we can get mental health and substance abuse services; where those with chronic illnesses can get the proper care they need. This one is a win win! It makes sense, is affordable and will help people live less stressful healthier lives.

Investing in a publicly funded primary care system is a smart investment and will save us all a lot of money and misery.

You might see some respond to this question with this, “We need to be able to purchase health insurance across state lines because it will promote competition and therefore lower your premiums.” So let’s talk about that because it could also limit what your coverage is as well as your regulatory protections and not save you anything in premiums. All very important to consider should you ever actually need to use your health insurance.

Could be financially devastating to find out, too late, that your policy doesn’t cover what you need it to, and because the state where you purchased your policy doesn’t have regulations that protect against this, you’re left up a creek without a paddle.

There are important things we must understand about interstate sale of health insurance. Health insurance is regulated at the state level. Each state oversees coverage requirements.

Each state oversees network adequacy, meaning–ensuring you will be able to get adequate care in your insurer’s network and not have to go out of your network and end up paying for more expensive care elsewhere. Each state oversees your plan is financially sound.

These regulations are there to protect the insured and to hold the insurer accountable to certain responsibilities and obligations.

It’s important to understand each state has its own health insurance laws and they can be very different from Vermont. Also, what might be a lower cost premium for someone in one state won’t necessarily be the same low premium cost for someone in another state, regardless if you are both buying the same out of state health insurance policy. For example: Health care costs in New York City are more expensive than some small town in Ohio and the premiums will vary even if both were bought in, let’s say, Kentucky because the COST of health care is different in these two places. So will your premiums go down if you buy across state lines? Probably not. Will you lose the protections under law offered by Vermont?

You might. Will you be able to access care here in Vermont?

Who knows. Will an out of state insurer even want to sell insurance

The first thing we need to realize about health insurance is it is not healthcare. An insurance company does not make money paying out on claims. We all know this. It is, by design, a complicated machine.

And there is a huge administrative need to keep the machine moving which is costing us a fortune in lost healthcare dollars. It is time to see our current health insurance system is failing us, because it is. We must be honest with ourselves and realize the cost of health insurance is only going to rise which in turn means we will continue giving up more and more just to try and keep it.

With the ballooning costs and the Trump administration working to eliminate our pre existing condition protections it’s time to think in new ways, innovative ways that start getting us to where we need to be.

Healthcare is what we need, not unusable health insurance we can’t even afford.

I don’t have the holy grail solution that fixes high health care costs while maintaining all of the other considerations of the field of health care. What I bring to the table as a candidate is the ability to collaborate with constituents, colleagues, and experts to construct a solution with proper research, modeling of impact and affect short and long term, and a solution that uses common sense. My experience with policy construction and analysis makes me the best candidate to ensure that whatever solution is crafted considers every Vermonter.

My focus so far this year has been geared more specifically to address the health care issues connected with the opioid crisis.

The prevention, recovery, and reintegration of those affected with addiction is first and foremost a priority. Decreasing addiction will go hand in hand with keeping crime rates low and our communities safe.

Cindy Weed (P/D)* (cindyweed@hotmail.com) There are several health care initiatives already in place that provide good health care services at an affordable or reduced cost plus one plan that got stalled in the Vermont legislature last biennium.

For one, the Vermont AllPayer ACO Model is actively in process locally and across the state and continues Vermont’s efforts towards health care reform. The pilot, serving about 30,000 Medicaid patients, is as an alternative approach to the longstanding fee-for-service model.

If deemed successful when it ends on December 31, 2022, it will have achieved better health care services at a reduced cost.

Secondly, the federal Affordable Care Act allows young adults the option of remaining on their parents health care insurance until the reach the age of 26. This gives youngsters a chance to get on their feet before having to pay for their own expensive health care insurance.

Thirdly, the State of Vermont’s Green Mountain Care program

offers two programs as a part of a family of low-cost and free health coverage programs for Vermonters: Medicaid for children & adults, the aged, blind, and disabled plus prescription assistance; and Dr. Dynasaur for children under the age of 19, pregnant women and households with low income.

Unfortunately, this biennium a study of a publicly financed primary health care system for all Vermonters fell short of the finish line in the Vermont Legislature.

The proposed legislation, including a study of possible sources of income, would have ensured that all Vermonters had access

to primary care services without incurring large out-of-pocket expenses and the ability to maintain their health. Under this approach, individuals would continue to purchase insurance to cover health care services that didn’t fall under the definition of primary care.

The legislation would have helped reduce health care expenses in several ways such as: premiums would come down because people are healthier, and reduce costs because primary care is taken out of an insurance setting and is paid for by tax dollars.

I support all of the above initiatives and will support all of

them this biennium. They are first steps in reforming our current, unaffordable health care system, and moving towards a universal and/ or single payer health care system for all Vermonters. (Universal health coverage (UHC) means that all people and communities can use the promotive, preventive, curative, rehabilitative and palliative health services they need, of sufficient quality to be effective, while also ensuring that the use of these services does not expose the user to financial hardship.) The United States could follow the lead of Canada, United Kingdom, Taiwan, New Zealand, Norway, Denmark

There is the cost of service, the cost of insurance, the cost of misuse, and the cost of unhealthy lifestyles just for starters. Studies show that our healthcare system is among the least efficient in the industrialized world. We duplicate services, overuse/improperly use emergency services, are ranked poorly on coordinating care and lag in many other areas such as preventative care.

Vermonters have seen massive increases in their insurance premiums while also seeing declining coverage. This is due to government mandates which include community rating. There used to be over thirty insurance companies doing business in VT, now there are two. That is completely unacceptable. I believe people should be able to buy policies tailored to their personal needs not riddled with cost adding mandates. Insurance prices vary by state with high

WANTED PERSON CAPTURE IN ST. ALBANS

Vermont State police Trooper Matthew Conte said he stopped Misty Nadeau, 38, of Colchester on August 29th, leading to her arrest on a warrant.

Nadeau was wanted on an arrest warrant in connection to a retail theft charge in Chittenden County. She was lodged until her arraignment on August 30th.

SWANTON CRASH CAUSES INJURIES

A family was left homeless after their trailer burned to the ground just off Metcalf Pond Road in Fairfield on Tuesday morning.

According to Vermont State Police investigator Todd Ambroz, the fire was reported at around 10:45am. When the fire department arrived on scene, they discovered a mobile home that was completely destroyed from fire and mostly caved in.

• Joseph Gonyea, 56, of Alburgh was arrested by the St. Albans City police after being stopped for erratic operation of a motor vehicle on Federal Street in the City.

During his arrest, police discovered a small handgun in his back pocket, which Gonyea is prohibited of possessing as a felon. He was issued a citation to appear in cort at a later date.

State Police say Boudreau went to a doctor’s appointment where he was unable to stand from intoxication, before leaving. He was located at his residence in St. Albans, according to police. The Northwest Regional Planning Commission has an exciting opportunity for an individual to work 20-30 hours per week assisting with regional and statewide grants and contracts. This is a one-year position, with a possibility of extension beyond one year.

The Grants Management Assistant will collaborate with NRPC staff to compile or develop materials to submit to granting agencies, organize grant deliverables, and review invoices and reports. Vermont State Police say a Tuesday afternoon crash in Highgate left the driver with moderate injuries and the vehicle he was driving totaled.

Trooper Jay Riggen wrote in a press release on Tuesday that Matthew Jensen, 27, of Highgate lost control of his 2018 Nissan Sentra while driving on County Road in Swanton Tuesday afternoon. Emergency crews were called to the scene around 4pm, where they discovered Jensen crossed over the center line, over the oncoming lane, and across the ditch before traveling about 400 feet, ultimately hitting a large rock.

The crash remained under investigation, police are trying to determine if alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

AREA STUDENTS TRAVEL FOR LEARNING

For a group of Missisquoi Valley Union and Richford High School students, this February winter break was anything but ordinary! It took several weeks for students and adults to catch up on their sleep after an eventpacked journey to Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Austria.

They experienced, explored, and learned four different languages and money currencies, castles, churches, architecture, food, historical events and places

as they traveled from Berlin through Prague, Dresden, Krakow, Budapest, Bratislava to our final destination in Vienna.

Our favorite place visited in Berlin was the Berlin Wall, which was the border that divided East and West Germany until 1989.

They were able to touch, take pictures, and walk along the largest piece of the wall still standing in its original spot.

After a somber visit to the concentration camps at Auschewitz and Birkenau, and

a look into the details of the Holocaust, the group was excited to have a chance to relax and get reinvigorated at Krakow’s worldclass attraction: The Salt Mine of Wieliczka. That salt mine is one of the largest tourist attractions in Poland, visited by over a million tourists every year. The mine was built in the 13th century and produced table salt continuously until 2007. There are dozens of statues and four chapels carved out of the rock by salt miners.

In Budapest, the students experienced an evening river cruise on the Danube, viewing a wonderful lighted panorama of the city by night, and a great way to end the day after sightseeing and shopping!

A short visit to Bratislava, the Capital of Slovakia, bordering Austria and Hungary, was a lovely baroque-renaissance inner-town with narrow, cobbled streets and

hidden noble palaces, beautiful churches, funny street sculptures, traditional restaurants, and lively shopping streets. A hill-top castle overlooking the city and the Danube River flowing alongside were an added treat.

Our last stop, Vienna, included a tour of Schonnbrunn Palace, St. Stephan’s Church, various interesting museums, several warm-up (coffee) stops, and more shopping!

Participants in this trip were Julie Berry, Samantha Berry, Madeleine Gaudreau, Elaina Genson, Kathleen Hoffman, Soukaina Jamil, Lillian Kalakay, Grace Kinney, Kylee Paradee, Nicholas Pond, Callahan Southwick, David Southwick, Connor Vezina, and Jess Vezina.

This group of travelers was diverse and each traveled with different goals in mind. For some, the trip was an educational,

historical, and cultural adventure.

For others, it was a new experience, and a chance to travel for the first time. Judging by the reaction of most of the travelers, the tour satisfied the hopes and dreams of each participant by providing a perfect mix of expectations.

Our trip was booked through Education First (EF) Tours, a group that provides international travel for students, parents, teachers, and was the tenth trip led

by Vikki Machia, the MVU Family and Consumer Science Teacher.

This and upcoming tours are open to all area high school students and adults. Our next adventure for 2019 is Britain and Ireland in Depth (England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales). An informational meeting is planned for Monday, September 10th, 7pm in the Highgate Elementary School Library.
