Tractor and Truck Pulls and Demolition Derbies draw big crowds every year as folks come out to see the fastest, strongest, and toughest vehicles flex their muscle under the bright lights.

Events like the Draft Horse Show, 4-H Exhibits, and a Parade of Antique Tractors offer a more traditional feel. Crafts, contests, concerts, rides, and kids’ games and activities round out see FIELD DAYS the event. page 6

Blouin has been charged with 10 misdemeanors in the past, evading a conviction on all of them, but being referred to court diversion on at least one charge.

Three people were arrested by Vermont State Troopers on July 30th for driving excessively fast on Interstate 89 in the Georgia/Milton area.

According to police, 18 year old Jordan Snodgres of Sudbury Mass, 18 year old Brian Cerow of Hopedale, Mass, and Sarah Brown, 39, of Milton, VT were all pulled over for speeding.

Snodgres was clocked traveling 99 miles per hour, Cerow was clocked at 105, and Brown was clocked at 101. All three were driving in a 65 mile per hour zone, leading to careless and negligent operation charges for all three.

They were issued citations to appear in court later this month.

WRONG WAY, BUDDY!

Vermont State Police say they arrested Ecans Elermont, 55, of Randolph, MA for allegedly driving in the wrong direction on Interstate 89 in St. Albans on July 26th.

Dispatchers received muliple calls of the wrong way driver, according to Trooper Nathaniel Quealy, who passed those concerns on to the on duty troopers. When they responded, along with officers from Swanton Police and St. Albans City Police, stopped the vehicle near Exit 20.

He was released on a citation to appear in Criminal Court on September 24th, according to police.

COPS INVESTIGATE STORAGE UNIT BURGLARY

Vermont State Troopers are asking for the public’s help in cracking a burglary case in Georgia two weeks ago.

According to the Troopers, three subjects jumped the fence at Georgia Self Storage around midnight on July 16th. The three people allegedly broke into at least one of the units on Morse Drive, according to Trooper Michael Anderson.

SUPPORT CLEAN WATER IN THE PRIMARIES

As the August 14th Primary looms, I admit that being raised in a fiscal conservative, socially responsible household, I would never blindly follow “Party.” I always look to the “Individual” when making my decisions in the voting booth. That is why I am choosing James Ehlers for Governor not only in this August 14th Primary, but the November General Election as well.

Those of us who dove headfirst into the efforts to save the waters of Lake Champlain, Lake Carmi and the Missisquoi River know James. Same goes for all those who fish, hunt and recreate in the State. His work with Lake Champlain International is award winning and legendary.

It was James who helped place “clean water” on Vermonters’ top lists of issues to care about these past few years. Yet, there is much more to this man than meets the eye.

Vermont’s future, like our waters, is becoming stagnant. We don’t need the media to tell us this. We know it. We can almost feel it. All we need to do is look around us and know we want to change it. Change for the better and change that we can see and actually be a part of. Good jobs, affordable medical care and housing, good schools, healthy kids, clean water. This really isn’t much to ask for. So why then do we always feel that no one is listening in Montpelier?

I could tell you that I’m voting for James Ehlers for Governor because of his extensive background, which justifiably qualifies him for the position. I would encourage everyone to come to the August 5th, Gubernatorial Candidates Forum, 3-5pm, at the St. Albans City Hall and find out for themselves. Yet, the reason why I am voting for James Ehlers for Governor is because he has proven himself to be the champion of the most important resource found in Vermont – her people. With every decision James makes, every dialogue he participates in, every vision he has for the future, James has one major consideration first and foremost in his mind – how will it serve us, the Vermont people.

Personally, I like the fact that James does not foremost consider political party, special interest or even his own electability.

James only considers you, along with your family, your

community, and your State. I think its high time we seated a Governor, whose main concern is just us, the Vermont People.

What a comforting thought, and a great way to ensure we Vermonters have the future we desire. Therefore, when you are in the voting booth, and realize you are tired of the status quo, please vote James Ehlers on August 14th, and in November.

INCARCERATION DOESEN’T WORK

An inmate has very little in jail to offer them. We need programming for addiction, intense mental health programs and proper medical attention.

The other issue Vermont has is jails are so over crowded. I have a loved one in a Vermont prison and I’m hoping that these issues that need serious attention get heard and programs start being offered not only in the men’s prison but all so in the women’s prison as well. All I see is the inmate get punished and never get proper treatment. I see no reason for the tax dollars get spent on these issues. Yes they break the law but what does Vermont have to offer? Vermont has very few rehab in patient places. I strongly feel that Vermont needs to really look at these issues and address them and improve them. Another issue Vermont has is only one women’s prison.

There are several men’s prison in the state of Vermont why isn’t there at least two women’s prison in Vermont? The fact that Vermont has only one women’s prison that’s an issue with over crowding. I feel Vermont needs to step up and get these inmates proper programming.

Are Vermont jails don’t offer a whole lot for these inmates. Inmates are mistreated with there medical.

I remember a few years back a female inmate had a month left to her sentence and died due to not being giving her medication.

How many other inmates are there that are not being giving the proper medication or even there medication? We as family and friends of a loved one Don’t All ways know that the inmate is being treated or not treated.

We need to stand up and speak or there just going to keep being mistreated and only being punished instead of getting the proper programming. This has been an ongoing issue in Vermont for a very long time. I feel if they can put clinics in for addicts to

get medicine for there addiction why can’t they get this medicine while in jail? Could we please get these issues addressed and help the inmate? I understand some inmates are just going to reoffend but Vermont needs to give this a try some inmates will benefit. As a tax payer I would like to see this change and get these inmates that are in jail the proper addiction, mental health and medical treatment. Are programming in general even if your not in a prison is not good this all needs to be redone.

Vermont doesn’t have anything great to offer to help people that need the help and that want the help. I could only Hope this will get looked at and attention spent to address it and inprove.

COMING TOGETHER TO BUILD A BETTER PLAYGROUND

Richford children now have a new playground at the ballfields and at Davis Park thanks to several grants obtained by the town. We need to recognize the efforts of our town road crew who got this done so the children in town will have a great place to play this summer. Summer is a busy time for highway crews but foreman John Nutting managed to schedule and squeeze in expanding the playground, installing the equipment and spreading the chips in just a few days. Employees Norman Godin, Matt Irons and Jason Wetherby worked very hard in the hot sun to give the kids a safe place to play . We also would like to thank Alfred and Dylan Gendron for helping out at a moment’s notice. This was definitely a community effort and part of our mission to offer recreational opportunities in Richford.

Do you want to continue with a representative who doesn’t hesitate to raise taxes and fees even when the state has a considerable surplus; who didn’t believe that Governor Scott would veto a budget that raised taxes and fees; continued to ignore what the taxpayers and the Governor wanted by still trying to force the issue to the tune of $60,000 a day, money wasted by belligerence.

I realize that the marijuana personal use issue is moot-to many of us it was the wrong message to send when the state is in such an opioid crisis, yet our present rep chose to ignore professional’s input, doctors, police, teachers and even students said it was a horrible idea. Public safety concerns obviously did not enter her mind. I am not sure that our representative has our Second Amendment rights at heart

Legislature on June 22, 2018, that was condemning the recently reversed federal policy of separating children from their families at the southern international border.

First I will say that I also feel it is a tragic situation when children of any family are taken from their families by a government authority. This sort of situation occurs numerous times a day in this country and indeed in this state. However, I also feel on the southern border where the authority is the federal government, we have elected members of the United State Congress to deal with these situations and it is not prudent use of the taxpayers money of the State of Vermont, to debate federal issues while we are in session, especially a special session.

Furthermore, the day of the vote on the resolution, June 22, 2018, I feel that proper procedures to vote on an issue on the House floor were not followed. The Resolution was not on the “Notice Calendar� the prior day and not printed in the “Action Calendar� of June 22nd.

When J.R.H. 2 was brought up for action, the Speaker was asked by members of the body, “where is the text of this resolution, so that we may read it?� Her, reply was it is in the Calendar, when informed it was not in the Calendar, she stated it was online. Several members could not locate it online either. At this point a roll call was requested and sustained with the Clerk beginning to call the roll. As is customary after the first vote is taken on the roll, there was a 3 minute recess. At that time a member of my caucus went to the Clerk to ask where the text of the resolution was online, the Clerk could not readily find it either. The Clerk did locate it but by that time the recess was over and the Clerk commenced to continue to call the roll. There was not further communication as to where to find the text of the resolution and even if there had been, a recess would have had to occur as House Rules prohibit the use of all electronic devices during a roll call.

This year’s Field Days begin on Thursday and Fernand Gagne, Chairman of the event, shared some amazing numbers and interesting facts with the County Courier, giving folks a glimpse of just how many people come through the Field Days each year and what they enjoy eating, drinking, and doing while they are there.

Gagne has served on the board since 2005; he’s been the chairman for three of those years.

Gagne finds that the Field Days provide a safe, fun event that folks can enjoy without breaking the bank.

“The Franklin County Field Days are a lot of fun and everything is reasonably priced--you get in for ten dollars and that includes all of the rides, shows, and parking” said Gagne. “It’s an unbelievable deal.”

Many people take advantage of that great deal. About 6,000 to 7,000 people attend the Field

Days per night.

Managing that amount of car and foot traffic is no small endeavor, and Gagne draws an interesting comparison.

“We oversee parking, food, and entertainment each day.

We have two fire departments on hand every night and an ambulance.

It’s like maintaining a small city for those days,” said Gagne.

Keeping the lights on and the power going keeps the crew on their toes before and during the

August 2, 2018 event.

“There are 18 electrical meters keeping the Field Days going, and lots of electrical work that has to be done.

Swanton Village is on call and we have a full-time electrician on the grounds at all times,” explained Gagne.

Thursday, opening night, hosts the annual Demolition Derby, which draws about 4,500 spectators and includes about 60 cars.

Traditionally, Friday night sees the largest crowds as folks come out to enjoy the Truck Pull. Roughly 5,000 to 5,500 people come out for that event, and about 75 trucks take the track to wow the crowd. Gagne noted that two years ago there were 100 pickups in the Pull.

Gagne’s numbers show that 25 kegs of beer are consumed on an average Friday night, and that doesn’t count glasses, bottles or mixed drinks.

“Franklin County is pretty thirsty on Friday night,” said Gagne.

Saturday the Field Days welcome 7,000 visitors. The night’s big event, the Tractor Pull, draws 4,500 spectators for the evening. Most years there are about 50 tractors entered in the contest.

strongest and best tractors to compete with others. Bill Rowell and Green Mountain Dairy send a tractor every year, according to Gagne.

“The Curtis boys, Jason and Asa, bring their tractors every year. They also mow all the lawns at the Field Days. That’s a big job!” said Gagne, “And the Bourdeau brothers bring tractors for the Pull and also spray the grounds for mosquitos before the event.”

The ATV Drag Races also draw great crowds, and on average, about 120 ATV’s compete on Sunday.

All of those folks need to eat, and there’s always a wide selection of fair food and drinks.

Gagne has rough estimates on some of the big sellers. About 6,000 quarts of french fries are served, 3,500 maple creemees are eaten, 6,000 hot dogs, and 8,500 cups of lemonade and ice tea are consumed.

The Franklin County Field Days bring a good amount of revenue into the county.

“All the local businesses and vendors benefit from it. It’s good exposure for all of our commercial exhibitors,” said Gagne.

August 2, 2018 the animals, and the games and food. Gagne highlighted some of the weekend’s most popular children’s events.

The Little Piggy Roundup is a classic. About a dozen piglets are released in an enclosed area and kids have the task of gathering them. Gagne loves the event and the chance it gives children to interact with animals in a safe and fun environment.

“Some kids have never touched a pig before,” said Gagne with a chuckle, “When they get near the pig, it’s so fun to watch them try to catch it.”

Kids who want to participate in the Little Piggy Roundup can catch the action at 4 pm on Saturday.

Kids have more opportunities for fun on Sunday with the Grady Howrigan Peddle Pull and the Kids’ Demo Derby.

Kids in the age range of five to six years old ride on their small, motorized cars and trucks with balloons tied to the front and the back. The winner of the Power Wheel Derby is the one who has the most balloons left. This Demo Derby begins at 2 pm on Sunday.

The Grady Howrigan Peddle Pull takes place at 1 pm on Sunday afternoon. The event was a favorite of Grady Howrigan, a lively, fun loving Franklin County kid who participated in it for years. The Peddle Pull was named in his memory this year.

James Messier, who teaches the Animal Science classes at MVU, and his wife Ronna, have been working with the Franklin County Field Days for years. The Animal Science program oversees animals in the Petting Zoo and runs an Ice

Cream booth.

“The MVU Animal Science Program is the only program that brings animals to the Petting Zoo. This year they will have one of our beef animals, two sheep, two goats, and Breezy Acres Farm is loaning two piglets. We will have six laying hens, and we hope the kids can gather eggs,” said Messier.

The Animal Science Program will also have fun activities for kids to take part in during the weekend.

“Kids can make butter using a baby food jar with a marble used as an agitator. Last year we had an exhibit where the kids could weigh and candle eggs. Three weeks ago, I put eggs in an incubator at school, and I’m hoping that by Friday the chickens start to hatch. I put a few eggs in at different times so we can have eggs hatch on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday,” said Messier.

Messier was glad to see his students embrace a larger part in the festivities.

“We’ve been more involved in the last couple of years than in prior years,” said Messier, “The Ice Cream booth raises money for the Animal Science Program, which is a tremendous help. My wife, Ronna, will be in charge of the Ice Cream booth again this year.”

The older students in the Animal Science Program, Anna Mashtare, Journi Louten, and Trinity Chevalier, participate at the Field Days working at the Ice Cream Booth and helping with the animals. A number of other students will be working with Ronna serving Ice Cream.

Messier has many memories of Field Days in Franklin County, and some of those go back to a time when things were very different from today.

“Several years ago there was no such thing as a Demolition Derby, a Truck Pull, or a Tractor Pull. It was all about the animals,” said Messier, “The kids that participate today showing their animals have just as much enthusiasm as we did when we were involved. Their numbers are down, but they are very enthusiastic about their work.”

Breakfast will be served at the 4-H booth in the morning hours of the Field Days and there will also be a 4-H Parade and a 4-H Dairy and Fitting Show on Friday.

Earlier in the summer word was traveling that the Franklin County Field Days might be looking for a new location in the coming years, but Gagne and Sharon Bosquet, Highgate Selectboard Chair, see no need for concern.

“There is a land swap that is going on with the Field Days and the state is working it out with the Field Days. I don’t think the state is going to hurt the Field Days in any way. The

only change that will take place will be in the parking location,” said Bosquet.

I grew up in Franklin County; I’ve chosen to make it my home and the place where I am raising my family. If I earn your trust in November - I will fight for Franklin County and Alburgh – I won’t be Chittenden County’s seventh Senator. I will fight for an affordable future by pushing for more localized Government and less State Government spending. I will fight for economic growth and in doing so I will fight for our dairy farms, I’m running to be our next State Senator because we need a Senator who will listen to and be a champion for our county.

Essex-Orleans Senate

(2 Seats) (includes the towns of Montgomery and Richford) Ron Horton (D) From 1972 to 1983 I called Vermont home. Then my company chose to stop doing business in Vermont and, with a young family, I decided we also had to leave.

For the next thirty years I moved to Bangor, ME, Portland, ME, Albany, NY, Portland, OR, and Cincinnati, OH, where I retired from Delta Air Lines. My house was still in Oregon so I went back there for fifteen years.

Finally, back in Vermont six years ago, I’m happy as a clam.

However, I’m also a bit sad with the changes that happened in my absence.

We bought a house that had been on the market for over two years, from a lady who was about to lose it because of her inability to come up with the tax money. As I looked around I found she was, by far, not the only one facing a similar situation. One only need look in the paper each week to see the tax sales going on. People are losing their places for just a few hundred dollars.

Vermonters are over taxed, under supported, under employed, yet over worked, under paid, and over stressed. Although I believe our elected officials to be intelligent people, they continue to look the other way and to do business as usual.

It seems to me that the definition of insanity is to continue to do the same thing over and over again while expecting different results.

And what I’ve heard from the incumbents lately is a lot of “can’t and never” words. Personally I believe in “Can and Will” words, as well as the necessity to think outside the box.

My platform revolves around finding ways that will allow Vermonters to continue to live, and thrive, in the state they love.

We must roll back taxes and freeze

them for people on fixed incomes, such as those over sixty-five years of age or disabled.

We must have a complete overhaul of the DMV inspections that have become just another way to add stress and, what I consider, another tax. No one should have to stress for six months of the year over how they will afford the repairs necessary to fulfill the ridiculous inspection regulations.

My website has a complete plan as to how we will keep vehicles safe, do away with inspections almost entirely, ensure residents have easy access to low cost repairs based on their ability to pay, and let adults begin the process of being adults once again.

Our education system needs a transfusion. When our schools lose students the answer seems to be that we need to pay more in taxes to keep the schools going. Whatever happened to the philosophy of let’s make it work? It seems to me that we go about fixing a problem by adding more problems. That won’t be my solution to the problems. Our households have to live within our budgets. So can our government, without cutting services that we all need.

The state needs money, however, we are harder on new business ventures than so many other areas of the country. New businesses tend to fail within the first five years yet we, as the all-powerful government officials behind the curtain, do nothing to encourage and assist them. We need to work a tax benefit that allows them to pay nothing in business taxes for the first two years and then graduate slowly to the full business tax base. The requirement to be met is that they must employ a certain number of employees to start, and increase to another number, yet to be determined.

And speaking of businesses, we must start our own commuter airline. Vermont is missing the boat by letting all of our qualified airports sit without airline service.

I’ve given Gov. Scott a simplified business plan showing the millions we would gain in the first year alone. The airline would add jobs, open up the reason companies want to settle in an area, and, if we put most of the revenue into our school system, would drop our tax rates like a rock off of Camels Hump!

companies and served as CEO in those companies, have been on the board of directors of a very large church in Oregon and am active in community, presently through Make-A-Wish Vermont.

I’d like to continue addressing them, just as I’ve done during my three terms in the Senate and my time as State Auditor. Thus, I was able to successfully champion legislation that tackled high energy efficiency costs that threatened the loss of 150 well-paying Franklin County jobs.

As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, I worked on lowering income taxes on Vermonters by $30 million, supported eliminating taxes on Social Security benefits for lower income retirees and I drafted an amendment to help improve rural cell phone coverage. Most important, I crafted the language in the 2018 tax bill that created a Tax Structure Commission to find a way to make our sales, income and property taxes fairer, more equitable and more understandable. But it’s helping individuals that makes the job especially rewarding: helping a family overcome the red tape of Vermont Health Connect; helping Habitat for Humanity resolve problems with their lease of state property; and, working to make sure that auto inspections don’t penalize people for conditions that have nothing to do with safety.

Congressman Welch stopped talking. He looked out across this room to those of us in the audience. And he said, “This… this the problem we are facing right now in our country. We aren’t acknowledging the very real pain of our community members. We are discounting and not talking to our neighbors. This is the problem that needs to be addressed.”

I hate to admit it, but it wasn’t until the days and months following the election that I really began to see Congressman Welch’s point. A CBS news poll at the time found that 73% of Americans felt that the current tone of political debate encouraged violence. I remembered the people booing, and realized that perhaps Vermont is no exception. I wondered what I could do to help change this, and I started organizing events to bring neighbors together—across political divides—for the good of our community.

I am running because I believe in the power of community, and making sure everyone has a place at the table. Because I have the experience and skills to bring people together in creating legislation in a way that unites us, instead of divides us. Because too many Vermonters are struggling— not due to poor choices, but due to poor policies.

My qualifications include nearly 15 years of public service.

I served my country as a Peace Corps and an AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteer. I have a Masters in Business Administration, and am a gubernatorial appointee to two statewide boards. I have worked with state departments of commerce and education managing millions in state and federal funding, and at a small business managing state and private contracts. For the past two years I have been the director of a social services program where I lead a seven member team that supports low income families and entrepreneurs in achieving their financial goals.

I am running for State Representative because I believe the Republican Party’s governing by sound bites is lacking, short sighted and creates undue stress and burden on our working families.

This style of governing boils down to empty words once the steam dissipates; leaving little left in the soup pot for most of us.

Let me give you just one example of what I’m talking about and why it matters to me.

We often hear the Republican Party speak of “economic growth and job creation”. On its face that sound bite sounds pretty good.

Wow! We need economic growth and jobs! Ok! There’s lots of steam!

But let’s stop a minute and think about it.

There is nothing about the actual worker in that sound bite. There is nothing about a livable wage. There is nothing about the opportunity for all. There is nothing about the success of working families. It sounds more like a plan of - you

can work but you can’t thrive. If you can’t thrive, you will never be able to rise. You will always be mired down in the daily quicksand of an unaffordable life.

We all want economic growth.

We all want job creation. But do we all want job creation that pays a livable wage? The Republican Party sound bite suggests no.

I do, I support economic growth that can sustain both business AND working families. It is important there is a balance so both can prosper and I believe the time has come that we begin to think “BIGGER”. We can create economic growth that enables both the business owner and the employee to succeed.

Why would we accept anything less? Don’t we all hold value? Have we been convinced that we are less than? That somehow it’s our own fault if we work a forty-hour week, or more, and still can’t afford all the basics involved in just a regular life? Shame is a powerful thing, an emotion easily manipulated and it keeps us from questioning the way things have become. It’s a brilliant plan; I’ll give the Republican Party that! We’ve become ashamed to ask for a level playing field and our working families are suffering.

There is a better way. And it starts with intention. It starts with a vision and desire to build a practical functioning foundation that not only supports business but will also support working families and their children. All we need is the will to see and think BIGGER. Through collaboration with business owners and employees we can all rise. And like I said before, this will grow our towns and our state. What goes in comes out.

There are so many issues we need to find solutions for. We must clean up Vermont’s waters; it can’t be put off any longer. We must find a way to get affordable and accessible healthcare for all Vermonters; healthcare is a necessity - plain and simple. It is not a want but a need. We must find ways to keep farming viable; our farms are important. We must keep local control of our schools and provide the best education we can.

Our future generations deserve our best efforts and attention. And these are not all the issues that we need to figure out. There is big work to be done and I am ready and eager to get at it.

I hope you will join me. Work with me. I have been involved in politics for fifteen years as a citizen advocate. I’ve spent countless hours in Montpelier talking with legislators and sitting in committee rooms. I have travelled to other states to advocate for change I believed would make a difference in people’s lives. I am a mom. This year’s trip to the Vermont Legion State Tournament marks the fourth time the team has gone to the tournament in five years.

“I think that we handled the year really well. We went in with a lot of expectations on us, but also a lot of new guys. For the most part, it was new players who had to step in and defend the title. I feel that we got better as the year went on, even if the record didn’t reflect it.

We started to gel as a team more and really want to win,” said Laroche.

“The game that will stand out to me is definitely the Brattleboro game. Taylor Yates came in and was huge for us. He stepped up in the biggest moments and really was able to shine. In the bottom of the 7th, we were tied and had 2nd and 3rd with one out. The infield was in and Alec Burns made a diving catch on a line drive to save the game,” said Franklin County head coach Josh Laroche, “We intentionally walked the next batter and then Yates had a 3-0 count on the following batter. The bases were loaded and the winning run on third. He threw three straight strikes and got a ground ball on the last one. It’s pretty crazy for someone as young as he is to step up and show guts like he did.”

“This year was also special to me, as it is probably the last time I will get to coach my brother Caleb Laroche. He’s been a huge part of the program for 5 years now, and to be able to share one last year with him was special. He came up clutch in the playoffs multiple times and was a true leader on the field,” said Laroche.

The player who consistently performed for Franklin County, Colby Brouillette, earned some well deserved, high praise from Laroche.

“It’s also hard not to notice the year that Colby had. Probably one of the best offensive displays I have ever seen,” said Laroche, “At the end of the regular season he was hitting .508 with 35 hits, 4 home runs, and 8 doubles. He led the team in every offensive category, runs, hits, RBI’s, ops, OBP, and was third in stolen bases.

Monday, Franklin County faced off against the top seed in the south, Brattleboro.

Franklin County Post took the lead late in the game in the 5 to 4 victory. Once again, the game was tied, this time at four with Franklin County batting in the top of the ninth when Mike Roy singled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Brattleboro tied the game at four, but that would be the last run the southern team would put on the board.

Coming into the tournament at the third seed in the northern division, Franklin faced the two seed in the south, Rutland, in the first game of the tournament.

Franklin County took the lead late in the game in a 4 to 2 victory.

The game was tied at two with Franklin County batting in the top of the seventh when Caleb Laroche singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.

Franklin County, who had been trailing by one, tied the game at two in the top of the sixth inning.

Andrew Harvey drew a walk, scoring one run.

“The Rocket program is designed to help girls develop skills and compete against good players,” said Halbach, “We take the girls all over New England, Montreal, and New York. It’s an eye opener for them to play against the competition we see.”

Halbach, who was the pitching coach for the Saint Michael’s college softball program for 16 years, brings plenty of expertise to the game, and thanks to his instruction and a lot of hard work, some of his players have enjoyed great success.

“Meggan (Roberge) Dulude, pitched for MVU and went on to St. Mikes where she’s in the Hall of Fame,” said Halbach, “Megan had 800 strikeouts in her four years of college. She faced UVM

“I work with these young girls who start pitching and I tell them that it’s going to take three years to be proficient,” said Halbach, “If you’re lucky you’ll be a star in high school. If you’re really lucky, you’ll be a star in college. We have a lot of smiles and we meet a lot of great parents.”

Some of those parents have a long-standing connection with Halbach and the Rockets.

“My hygienist was on my first Rockets team. I now coach her daughter in the pitching clinic.

Currently, I have five girls in my pitching clinic who are associated with my former players,” said Halbach.

Thanks to a large budget, raised through player fundraising and other donations, the Rockets program is able to pay for the players’ food and lodging, making it a little easier for families to participate.

During the offseason, Halbach hosts winter pitching clinics where girls as young as eight and ten receive instruction to help them improve their skills on the mound.

“We work for 14 weeks at four hours, one day a week,” said Halbach, “I usually see 30 plus kids at the pitching clinic in the winter, and that’s how we build the Rockets program. We get the pitchers and build the program around them.”

“Allen Ricker and I, who are both from Wisconsin and met in Vermont, were talking about how our softball league was folding 24 years ago,” said Halbach, “We took the best players from the three teams and formed the Rockets.”

The Rockets Softball Program will be filling Franklin County softball fields this weekend as they host the Vermont Rockets Invitational. Twenty-three teams will participate in the tournament with girls in the 14U, 16U, and 18U categories competing.

Games will be played at three locations with the 18U Rockets playing at St. Albans Bay, the 16U playing at the Collins Perley Sports Complex, and the 14U girls competing at Georgia Beach.

This will be the largest number of teams the program has hosted, and Ralph Halbach, president of the Rockets, tipped his hat to the folks who have been hard at work organizing and the parents who’ve been lending a hand in the process.

“Connie Sheets and Mike Thweatt are the heart of the program. Mike has been with me for 15 years, and he and Connie are

Halbach began working with Meggan in the sixth grade; she is now the assistant athletic director at Saint Michael’s College.

“There’s no second place for Meggan,” said Halbach, “She’s the best pitcher we ever had.”

Casey Brooks and Audrey Thweatt are two other great ballplayers that came through the program.

Aubrey went on to play softball for a Division I college, walking onto the team her freshman year and then receiving money in

scholarships the following year.

“After 25 years you’ve seen a lot,” said Halbach, “I remember Mckenzie Pratt who played for us while she was going through her cancer treatment. She was such a sweetheart.”

Halbach also spoke of Heather Greenfield of BFA. “Heather won a state championship in her freshman year of high school at BFA. She was one of our first Rockets pitchers,” said Halbach as he reminisced about seasons past.

“Alex was a true grit player. She was one of the best ever when it came down to just knowing she could do it,” said Halbach, “It’s amazing how many girls have played for me.”

With many girls coming into the program at early elementary school age, Halbach sees them grow year after year.

“I see girls when they are eight or nine years old until they are 18.

I’m glad to help the young ladies out and they really appreciate it,” said Halbach, “What’s happened in the last 24 years has been amazing.

It’s hard to teach pitching, you have to be able to see things that others can’t see, and I’m able to do that. It’s made it possible for me to do this.”

At seventy years old, Halbach still coaches his own team and works with the pitchers in the winter, and he takes none of it for granted.

“I’ve been very lucky, my shoulder has never given out, I still throw batting practice, and I’m still capable. It’s been fantastic.”

Halbach and his staff have spent years investing in the lives of young softball players, and he’s happy to say that there’s plenty of talent in the program this year and plenty coming in the years ahead.

“I’ve got some really good young ones coming up. Lizzie Bourdeau from Swanton. Ava Harrison, who’s in the seventh grade in St. Albans--they’re going to be very good. There’s a lot of

good stuff coming in Franklin County” said Halbach, “Softball is healthy in this county.”

The Rockets teams are never large, and Halbach keeps it that way for a reason.

“We carry about 12 players on a team because our goal is to get everyone playing time. We guarantee everyone two games on Saturday, but our goal is to win on Sunday. We do our best to get everyone in on Sunday, but our goal is to win that day,” said Halbach.

While most of this year’s teams have girls from Franklin County, especially MVU and BFA high school, they also have many from Chittenden County, and there are even four girls who travel from North Country.

“The kids are very dedicated and they work hard,” said Halbach of this year’s team.

With the high level of competition in high school sports, the chance to play on a competitive summer team gives athletes an edge when they return to school.

“When the girls get back to their high school programs they have learned so much and grown in confidence. Even if we don’t win a lot during the summer season, all the girls grow,” said Halbach.

Dave Blodgett, who coaches the 18U Rockets team, spoke of some of the other benefits that come from a summer of softball.

“I wanted to be part of the development of local players that wanted to pursue a higher level of play. The Rockets give the girls a

chance to play in front of college coaches and hopefully a chance to play in college if that’s their intention,” said Blodgett.

The focus on development is seen at every level in the Rockets program.

“I believe the Rocket’s main focus for all age groups is development. We participate in some very high-level tournaments and while we are always trying to win--development, teaching/ coaching is our main focus.”

Blodgett has seen a lot of softball with the Rockets in the eight years he’s been with the program, but one play stands out in his mind and provides an excellent example of what his players are capable of.

“One of the greatest moments I have coached or have seen is the triple play we had three years ago.

We had a very rare triple play; a girl caught the ball at third, threw to first for a pickoff, and first threw back to third for a tag out,” said Blodgett, “Even the umpire said it’s the first triple play he had seen in 30 years of umpiring.”

Blodgett extended a heartfelt thanks to Halbach and all the others who keep the program running.

“We have had many great moments over the years with perfect games, no-hitters, walkoff home runs, grand slams,” said Blodgett, “We have been very blessed to have such talent come through the Rocket organization.”

STATE REVIELS CARMI PLAN, SOLUTION STILL A LONG WAY AWAY The state has unveiled its crisis response plan for the troubled waters of Lake Carmi in Franklin County, as required by S.260, the “clean water funding” bill approved in the 2018 legislative session.

The agencies of Natural Resources and Agriculture, Food and Markets, presented a draft of the Lake Carmi crisis response plan at a public hearing in Franklin last Thursday.

Declaring the lake in “crisis” — and providing the mechanism to set in motion the state response plan, which was due by the end of the summer — was nearly all that remained of the bill, initially introduced to identify long-term funding for addressing the state’s

water pollution problems. By the time it was signed into law in May

by Gov. Phil Scott — as Act 168 — the “clean water funding” bill had been stripped of all funding proposals and most of its original intent.

But the law did contain a section granting the secretary of the Agency of Natural Resources authority to designate bodies of water with particularly poor water quality as being in “crisis.” The law gives ANR, in conjunction with the state’s agriculture agency and VTrans, 90 days to develop a clean-up plan.

blooms of cyanobacteria that have blanketed the lake’s waters with a thick, green and potentially toxic, scum.

A “perfect storm of factors” had led to a particularly bad year for the 1,375-acre lake, the response plan said. Heavy rainfall early in the year resulted in runoff that was laden with nutrients.

And then an unusual cold spell in August caused the water in the lake to turn over earlier than normal — a phenomenon normally associated with autumn, when air temperatures drop, and the cooled surface water sinks — releasing phosphorus from deep in the lake. The lake water turned over again in October, leading to blooms through November. The toxic blooms forced the closure of beaches and a local state park

for weeks, due to public health concerns. Camp owners, residents and environmental advocates converged on the Statehouse during the recent session, Independent Agent demanding action.

Rupe, an ANR agricultural water quality specialist said at the meeting. “But there is a difference when we’re calculating the numbers and the phosphorus reduction.”

The lake in crisis response plan sets a target phosphorus concentration for Carmi at 22 parts per billion — a level that, based on past monitoring data, would allow residents and visitors to swim, boat and otherwise enjoy the lake. “Obviously Carmi is not maintaining those uses right now,” said Rupe.

Perry Thomas, head of DEC’s lakes program, said in an interview on Thursday that environmental managers often are forced to choose between in-lake or watershed level solutions for polluted waterways, due to limited funding. Under the crisis response plan, however, Vermont will be doing both for Lake Carmi.

They are also a feature installed for the safety of the children who play there.”

Approximately 100 campers attend the daily camp which includes activities such as sports, library, music, gardening and water activities as well as breakfast and lunch. The camp has been in operation for over twenty years.

Collins said the town also decided to use some of the grant money to install equipment at Davis Park which had nothing for younger children. A unit including slides, a swing set and a “camelback” climber are installed there as well as a mini sand excavator.

The equipment was purchased through Pettinelli Associates in Williston who sent a crew up to work with the town highway department to install it. The road crew also expanded the

“We would like to see more visitors in town who can enjoy all the recreational resources the community has to offer,” Collins said, “our next project will be to obtain kayaks and canoes to lend out. We are currently installing a shed at the Thrift Shop which will house pre school bikes and strollers that can be lent out to community members and visitors.”

The new equipment replaces some that was at least forty years old and unsafe. It includes a preschool treehouse, climbers, a maypole an enclosed swing, bumblebee and space ship jumpers, telescope, school bus fun phones, giant jacks and outdoor musical instruments including drums and an xylophone. The recently paved basketball court also has a “fun tunnel” for younger children for shooting basketballs.

The equipment has been well used by children who attend the NOTCH Day camp.

Richford: Kids in Richford have some new places to play this summer. According to Select Board Chair Linda Collins, new playground equipment has been purchased through an Agency of Human Services Promise Initiative Grant. The Initiative provides support to help communities (with at least one elementary school) improve education and development for children in their community. The grant for $150,000 was divided with $90,000 for pre school literacy and $60,000 for recreation.

The Selectboard oversaw the purchase and installation of equipment at the Richford Playground and at Davis Park.

Collins estimated over $100,000 in money has been spent with grants from RISE Vermont, Promise and a State Buildings and Recreation Grant. The initial grant for $20,000 came from the Richford Community Fund and provided the match for the State Grant.

The playground equipment is part of a larger vision for Recreation in Richford much of which centers on the Mississquoi River. Next summer the Rail Trail extension will be completed from Troy St. to the middle of town and recently another canoe access was built along the river on Main St. Currently there are canoe campsites at Davis Park and the playground both of which are directly on the Mississquoi. The park is the site of the annual River Fest sponsored by the Richford Conservation Commission and the Northern Forest Canoe Trail.

Richford is one of only two Vermont towns named a Trail Town by the NFCT. The town also received a grant from the Wild and

Our grandson Devon and Kerri Lumbra and their two son’s Teddy and Julian were visitors here of grandparents Sonny and Lois Lumbra this week,

7/25: Eighteen members of the Green Mountain Ruby Reds gathered at St. Isidore’s Parish Hall for a Birthday pot-luck luncheon and a few of us stayed and played one of our favorite games after. We all enjoyed the delicious food, sang Happy Birthday (to me) and chatted and came home around 2:30.

Mike had a Watercolor Workshop during the three days before returning home in MA. Granddaughter Emma Roger came and visited her grandmother Maggie Elkins 7/27 and had a very enjoyable afternoon chat. Emma will be entering her last year of college where she has attended at Sterling in Craftsbury, VT. NOTICE: Sue Tillotson and Nancy Lumbra have been trying to get the word out in regards to having classmates that attended the old Village and Center Schools before they were destroyed by fire or taken down. Please come and share memories, pictures and POTLUCK on Sunday, August 5 at noontime at the Old Grange Hall.

The Field Days now has a new parking area, seven acres in size, on the same side as the event. That portion of the property was fully wooded this spring, and it has been cleared and is ready to serve as parking for the weekend.

“Heath Wright did the excavating, mostly by donation. The new parking area is much better than the old,” said Gagne, “it will actually require less walking.”

Bosquet is pleased with the decision to keep the Franklin County Field Days where it has remained for four decades. For her and many Franklin County residents, it’s an event that brings some good things to the county.

• Bernard Jacobs, 23, of Richford was arrested for driving with a criminally suspended license as well as giving false information to a police officer after he was pulled over on Route 105 in Richford on July 26th. According to the Trooper, Jacobs gave the officer a different name in order to avoid being caught.

He is due in court on September 4th.

• Robert Sears, 40, of St. Albans was arrested for driving with a criminally suspended license after being pulled over on Route 7 in Milton on July 28th, according to police. Sears was issued a citation to appear in criminal court on September 25th.

• David Bedard, 51, of Richmond was arrested for DUI after being pulled over on Route 15 in Cambridge on July 29th, according to Trooper Michael Anderson. The Trooper did not say how intoxicated Bedard was suspected of being, but did say he would be cited into criminal court on August 1st.

• Elliot Johnson, 42, of Georgia was arrested for DUI on July 29th at around 10pm after he drove up

“The same thing that stood out about the Field Days to me, when I was young, stands out now. It’s a very agriculturally based community that we have in Franklin County. The Field Days does a really great job of celebrating that and bringing it together. It’s not just about carnival rides and cotton candy. It’s about Tractor Pulls and a place to visit people you haven’t seen,” said Bosquet.

The Field Days tradition, which began when Franklin County had a broader base of farmers in the community, provided the agricultural community with a much needed break in the midst of a very busy time of year.

“Farming can be a lonely job.

You see the people who come to the farm, but it’s hard to get out. The Franklin County Field Days still gives people a chance to get out and visit. It’s

nice that it hasn’t changed very much over time,” said Bosquet.

The Franklin County Field Days also serve as a reminder that, although the number of farms in the area has decreased, the county is still deeply rooted in agriculture.

“We are all related to the agricultural community in one way or another. No matter where you work your grocery stores and car dealerships are supported by the farmers,” said Bosquet, who works at Fleet Pride.

For those who don’t have a direct connection to agriculture, the Field Days also provide a chance to learn about animals and those who raise them.

“I always enjoy the horse pulls and petting zoos and the 4-H kids love to show their animals,” said Bosquet, “Whatever we can do in our communities to support healthy

• Ian Sylvester, 25, of Winooski was arrested for driving with a criminally suspended license after police pulled him over on the Upper Pleasant Valley Road in Cambridge on July 31st.

He was cited into court on August 29th.

• Matthew Cantell-Tipper, 22, of Alburgh was arrested recently for DUI after Swanton Police pulled him over on Grand Avenue.

According to police, CantellTopper provided a preliminary breath test of 0.161%, more than

twice the legal limit for driving in Vermont. He was cited into court and released on conditions.

DAY CAMPERS EXPLORE AGRICULTURE

Photos and Story by: Ruthie Laroche For the County Courier It wasn’t long ago in Vermont that offering kids a trip to a working dairy farm would have been a fun outing but probably not a novel experience.

With many people in the state being two to three generations removed from active farming, a trip to the farm for many of today’s kids provides a

rare opportunity for hands-on interaction with a way of life they’ve never seen firsthand.

Pleasant Valley Farm in Berkshire has welcomed kids from the Berkshire Daycamp for two years giving them the chance to spend the afternoon on the farm.

Kids ages eight to ten roll up their sleeves and take part in a variety of farm activities from washing, walking, and feeding

young calves to making butter and waiting patiently to see a calf be born.

The campers also learn about the body structure of cows, the food they eat as they grow, and the process of milking.

“I get so excited seeing the kids with the animals and seeing them learn about what it takes to care for them and how gentle we need to be and the respect we need to have. I also get excited when parents come to see what we do here,” said Amanda St. Pierre, “a lot of kids never get

to touch animals, which is really why we started the camp. I was born and raised in this area, and even though I didn’t grow up on a farm, I had cousins and friends who did.”

Seeing kids who’ve never been to a dairy farm or touched or bottle feed a calf never gets old for St. Pierre.

“The kids have even gotten to see a calf being born, they get to do chores, and they get to do what I did as a kid--go to the barn and get smelly, washing the calves, and milking a cow. We’re excited to offer some of that to the kids in our community,” said St. Pierre.

There is another value in bringing kids to the farm and it’s one that many may not think of.

“When we first started out on this facility we had computer chips on our cows,” said St. Pierre, “Who came up with that?

It was probably a farm kid who liked computers and knew that his dad could track the animals.

I tell kids in the high school classes I visit that they might have the next great idea for dairy farming! We use so much technology today.”

Holly Laurie who has been showing cows in 4-H since she was in the Pee Wee Division, is a junior in high school. Eager to see other youngsters embrace a love for farming and farm animals, Laurie offered to help with the day camp.

“We’ve taught the kids about the top seven most popular breeds of dairy cows, about milk production and about the tools we use. The kids liked learning

about the bands the cows wear on their legs that tell us how much exercise they get and if they are getting their medicine,” said Laurie.

Laurie has spent her life on the farm; her father is the herdsman at Pleasant Valley Farm.

“I’ve been on the farm my entire life, and I love it. I love the animals,” said Laurie, who takes Diversified Agriculture at Cold Hollow Career Center and wants to farm when she gets older.

Introducing kids to farming at a young age may help build interest in the field. While the Berkshire Day Campers may not be ready to design the latest technology, they are ready to meet the farm’s younger members.

Ada Kinney and Madeline Robtoy, two day campers, eagerly hoisted a bottle of fresh milk toward a two-week-old calf in the calf barn.

“The kids love this! They look forward to it from the time we mention it until the day we get here,” said Candy Bosely, who works with the Berkshire Day Camp, “They love the hands-on time with the calves.”

Campers Clay Robtoy and Katy Raymo both shared their experiences eagerly while they waited to finish washing their ‘show calf’ in preparation for the parade held for their parents tomorrow.

“I think it’s pretty cool to have the experience of washing the cows and walking them and to get a chance to learn

The addax is a type of antelope that lives in the Sahara Desert in northern Africa. It has a grayish-brown coat in the winter, which turns sandy blonde or almost white in the summer.

The bonobo is a type of chimpanzee that lives in the Congo Basin in central Africa. It has long legs, a dark face, pink lips and long, parted hair on its head. The vaquita is a type of porpoise that lives in the Gulf of California. It is stocky with dark rings around its eyes, patches on its lips, a dark gray back and a white belly.

The destruction of habitat, along with hunting and other things, have made these animals endangered. People are working to change this, however.

The addax has been reintroduced in Morocco and Tunisia, and many are being raised in captivity. There are 29,000 to 50,000 bonobos left, and organizations are working hard to protect them and their habitat. Thereare only 100 to 300 vaquitas left, making them one of the most endangered species in the world. Laws now prevent the use of nets that have accidentally trapped and killed vaquitas, and other steps are being taken to protect them.

Huguette Barabe

BERKSHIRE: Huguette Barabe, age 92, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2018, at the Barre Gardens Nursing Home in Barre, VT. She was born October 29, 1925, in Black Lake, Quebec, Canada, the daughter of the late Louis Philippe & Ermentinenne (Arsenault) Larochelle.

Huguette attended school in Black Lake and on June 26, 1948, married Marcel Barabe. Huguette

& Marcel made their home in Berkshire where they owned and operated a dairy farm and raised their family. She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church where she also taught Catechism. She assisted with the French Program at Richford High School and then worked as the secretary for the Northeast Supervisory Union in Richford. Her many hobbies and interests included, painting, quilting, sewing, playing cards, cooking and most importantly spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Lucie Price of Sacramento, CA, Francine & Robert Whitehead of Montpelier, John & Margie Barabe of Berkshire, and Suzanne & Todd Chagnon of Moores, NY; her grandchildren and their families, James Barabe, Thomas Barabe his fiancé Kayla Benway and their son, Finley Barabe, Cortni Cleveland, and Alicia Whitehead and her son, Riley Grout; her siblings, Rene, Michelle, Margo, Bob & Rita Larochelle all of Quebec, Canada.

ST. ALBANS: Henry J. Garceau, a lifelong area resident passed away Friday, July 27, 2018, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Swanton on March 14, 1939, he was the son of the late Gaston and Theresa (Gratton) Garceau. Henry was 79 years old.

On February 28, 1959, in St. Albans, he married Marlene Berger, who survives him.

He was a well know carpenter throughout this area, having started a construction career at Wright & Morrisey and then set out on his own- he’s built a portfolio that ranges across Franklin County and includes several local barns and his own home. To his family he was known as “Mr Fix-It” or “MacGyver” as he was always creatively working on projects. He enjoyed playing the accordion as much as his family loved hearing him play. He was especially proud of his garden, collection of tractors and the time he spent with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Marlene, of St. Albans; their son, Ricky Garceau; their daughters, Theresa Many and her husband, Allan, of Highgate, Laura Garceau and her significant other, Roger Sartwell, of Highgate, and Shellie Streeter and her husband, Timothy, of Fletcher.

He also leaves grandchildren, Shain and Sarah Garceau, Jennifer Gordon, Arron and LeeAnn Many, Tausha Simmons and her husband Michael, David Garceau, Brandon, Ryan and Keegan Streeter; and 10 beautiful great-grandchildren.

Henry is also survived by his brothers, Rene Garceau and his wife, Betty, Roland Garceau and Greg Garceau and his wife, Julie; his sister, LouAnn Reed and her husband, Roger and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Henry was predeceased by his son, Robie Garceau and sister, Pauline Austin and her husband, Ralph and sister in law, Judy Garceau.

It was Henry’s wish that there be no services.

a Letter to the Editor from Sheldon resident and voter, Tammy Consejo, accusing me of having voted NO on J.R.H. 2 (a Joint Resolution).

The facts surrounding this vote were omitted by her. Contrary to normal procedure, J.R.H. 2 was not on notice for the day. During the session’s proceedings, a surprise announcement of the resolution’s impending presentation was made by Speaker Mitzi Johnson. Without any paper copy to review or ability to view the document via computer, a reading of the resolution was done by the Clerk of the House.

The Clerk had been asked by a House member to locate J.R.H. 2 on the computer, but because of its unusual location, he was unable to access the downloaded document before the vote.

The resolution was read again, followed by a cursory discussion. A roll call vote was requested immediately

feeding the cows because it’s not every day that you get to go to a cow and take a bottle and feed a newborn baby animal. It’s a good experience to do things you haven’t done before.”

Clay echoed Katy’s words, his eyes bright as he spoke of his time at in the barn.

“I think being at a farm is fun because you get to experience new things and you get to see different kinds of cows,” said Clay, “It’s really fun!”

Kids from Richford also enjoyed a day camp with Pleasant Valley Farms, but their day camp came to them.

A local animal lover, Richard Flint, brought an assortment of animals to the NOTCH day camp in Richford so kids could be introduced to a wide variety of domesticated critters.

Flint brought goats, ducks, a donkey, and rabbits, and Pleasant Valley Farm sent a Jersey calf from the farm to create a small petting zoo for the children.

Megan Terrell, who is in charge of the Pleasant Valley Farm Day Camp, attended college at SUNY Cobleskill and studied Animal Science with a dairy focus.

Currently, she is works with the calf barn team at Pleasant Valley and would love to be an Ag teacher some day.

“I like to start kids when they’re young and get them interested in farming. Maybe when they are older and have an opportunity to take an ag class they will,” said Terrell, who owns a small beef farm and shows dairy cows.

The herd at Pleasant Valley Farm is diverse, containing Holsteins, Red Holsteins, Jersey cows, and Brown Swiss. The wide variety of cows brings interesting questions from young visitors.

“I’ve had some kids ask me if a particular cow is a horse or a donkey or a deer,” said Terrell with a kind smile, “some of the brown cows do have bigger ears and they do look more like donkeys. The Jerseys look like deer to the kids, so there is

confusion in that.”

Like the rest of the staff at Pleasant Valley, Terrell enjoys sharing the love of the farm with new campers.

“We have a lot of kids who haven’t been exposed to calves, so it’s nice to get them some hands-on experience,” said Terrell as she helped a camper adjust a bottle for a hungry calf.

“It’s nice to show them where their milk is coming from and where their food is coming from, and they always have a lot of questions!” said Terrell.

Terrell noted that most of the questions the kids ask have to do with how the farm takes care of their animals. Some of the campers haven’t even known that milk comes from cows.

“One question I had from a camper that was interesting came from a child that didn’t realize that cows had to have a baby to produce milk,” explained Terrell, “they don’t know the life cycle of the cow, so they ask a lot about that.”

Just over twenty campers came to the farm, some for their second year. Terrell hopes that the kids will share their enthusiasm at

home.

“Hopefully they can go home and explain to their parents what they’ve learned on the farm and tell about how they had a positive experience,” said Terrell, “we want parents to know that we take care of our calves and that the kids have had a lot of fun.”

Terrell also hopes that some of the kids that visit the farm will someday choose a career in agriculture.

“There’s a lot of jobs that you wouldn’t think of that pertain to agriculture. We use a lot of technology to help us raise our animals in more efficient and healthy ways.”

On the final day of the Pleasant Valley Day Camp, the kids have an opportunity to show off their new-found dairy skills.

“The kids put on a show for their parents on Friday,” said Terrell, “We will also offer a tour to the parents if they want to stay and walk around the farm. We will be available to teach them about what we do and to answer questions. We love questions!

However, the Agency of Agriculture recently faced criticism from the state auditor for not adequately tracking phosphorus reduction resulting from the new practices. Many attending the meeting expressed frustration over the lack of available information.

Ryan Patch, deputy director of water quality for the Agency of Agriculture, said in an interview Thursday the agency needs to better communicate to the public about work that has been done already, to improve water quality in the watershed. One of the agency’s charges in the crisis response plan is to create a database of on-farm improvements by the state as well as other partners, like the University of Vermont Extension Service, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service, to better

calculate annual phosphorus reduction.

Patch said the lake in crisis designation has been an opportunity to investigate and “to adopt technologies that weren’t available in 2009,” when the initial Lake Carmi water quality improvement plan was developed.

For example, UVM extension recently purchased from the Netherlands a grassland manure injector for farmers to use to inject manure directly into hayfields, where it is less likely to run into the lake. Most of the agricultural land in Carmi is in hay production, Patch said.

Some residents expressed appreciation for the collaborative process that has resulted from the attention paid to Lake Carmi. Said one, “there’s been a lot of tension between lake folks and farmers, and it’s going to take everybody a little while to get over that.”
