According to the Vermont State Police, Bridgette Choiniere, 32, of Swanton was arrested for allegedly driving a stolen vehicle on July 5th in Townshend.

Police were originally called to the area for a vehicle that had a dog left inside it, on a hot day.

When the officers ran the plates, they learned the vehicle had been reported stolen.

Trooper Ryan Wood said in a written statement that the health of the dog was okay, but he did talk to Choiniere about the dangers of leaving animals or children in a vehicle on a hot day without climate control.

Choiniere was cited into Windham County Court on August 14th to answer to the charge of Operating Without Owner’s Consent and Possession of Stolen Property.

thousands of dollars from an elderly man and money from her daughter’s school fundraiser.

According to police, Hodgdon returned to the home of the man she is accused of stealing from.

Police said she also tried to cash a check at the bank from the same victim’s account that she had been accused of stealing from in the past.

Hodgdon was cited on Monday with four counts of violating conditions of release, including having contact with her victims, abusing and harrassing her victims, breaking her curfew, and being within 300 feet of her victims.

In addition to stealing more than $10,000 in cash from the a 92 year-old man, she was also accused of stealing at least $170 from her daughter’s MVU fundraiser where the school was selling boxes of Krispy Kreme donuts.

WORST HITCHHIKING EXPERIENCE EVER

According to court records, Karen Rich, 22, of Swanton told police she was only a hitch-hiker during a high speed police chase on Monday evening.

Police had tried to stop Rahel Barrows, 50, of Swanton for speeding, 88 in a 65 on Interstate 89 in St. Albans. After police attempted to pull Barrows over, he began to flee, leading police on an eight mile chase through St. Albans and Swanton before bailing out on Beebe Road in Swanton.

The officer later chased Barrows on foot, apprehending him near the river about 250 yards away from his vehicle.

Rich, who had been Barrow’s passenger for the length of the

chase, jumped into the driver’s seat to put the vehicle in park, according to court records.

Trooper Shawn Cavic said Barrows reached speeds upwards of 120 miles per hour in a 40 mile per hour zone, on a winding road during the chase.

Barrows was transported to Northwest Correctional Center on $25,000 bail. Rich was driven by police to a friend’s home in Swanton after giving her statement.

Barrows was charged with Eluding, Gross Negligent Operation, Reckless Endangerment, Driving with a Criminally Suspended License, and Resisting Arrest.

According to the Trooper’s sworn statement, Barrows told the officer that he fled because he knew he was “wanted.”

He was held on $25,000 bail after his arraignment.

Barrows was also arrested twice in June for driving with a criminally suspended license, once by Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and once by St. Albans City Police.

POSSESSION OF CRACK IN ST. ALBANS

Vermont State Police caught Lucas Paradee, 21, of St. Albans with a misdemeanor amount of crack cocaine, according to Trooper Matthew Conte. Police arrested Paradee just before 1am on Sunday on Main Street, according to police.

He is due in court on August 27th to answer to the charge of Possession of Crack.

• Charles Champney, 34, of St. Albans was arrested for driving with a criminally suspended license on Interstate 89 in Colchester on Friday evening.

He is due in court on August 28th.

• Roxanne Prevost, 26, of St. Hubert, Quebec was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after police stopped her for speeding on Interstate 89 in St. Albans Town on Sunday.

Troopers were conducting a speed enforcement detail when they clocked the woman speeding around 10:44pm. She was cited into court on July 30th to answer to the charge.

Vermont State Police Trooper Benjamin Weed said he is investigating a suspected arson in Highgate on Friday morning after police were notified of a 2012 Volkswagon Jetta that had been lit on fire in a cornfield in Highgate.

According to the officer, the Highgate Fire Department responded to extinguish the vehicle, which was in a cornfield near 377 Gore Road, and is a stone’s throw from the owner’s home, according to court records.

• Jamie Mason, 30, of Richford was arrested and charged with driving with a criminally suspended license as well as disorderly conduct after police were called to a River Street residence at around 2:30am on Thursday. Police say they learned the whereabouts of Mason about an hour and a half later, which also led them to charge him with DLS.

STAND YOUR GROUND

It is quite disappointing that Gov. Phil Scott caved in to House Speaker Mitzi Johnson’s power trip over the budget.

I really wish that he had vetoed the budget again and that state government had shut down-maybe then people would take notice at the ballot box and vote the tax hungry legislators out of a job.

They certainly are not representing the people; only their special interests.

The speaker and other legislators’ attitude, including our area’s present representative, cost taxpayers $60,000 a day for far too many days.

Many of us voted for you, Mr. Scott, because you stated from the start that you would not accept any new taxes and now you have let us all down.

In a year of a substantial surplus it takes a lot of ego to pass higher taxes and to further burden those that pay your salary.

We no longer seem to care about people seeking asylum. Our Attorney General has decided that people seeking asylum are doing something illegal, and should be punished, and should have their children ripped from their arms. So did our President, until the blowback made him quickly decide he did, after all, have the power to change his presidential order to separate children from their mothers and fathers.

One of the many things that break my heart about the immigration controversies to do with our southern border is that so many of us don't seem to understand that seeking asylum is NOT ILLEGAL. It is a human right established by the international agreements we long ago signed on to, and which have been incorporated into our law. Any person under the law is supposed to be allowed to come to a port of entry and ask for asylum.

They are to be allowed to give their story of the danger they are fleeing, and if found to be believable they are given entry and the opportunity for a hearing date for their case.

Under Obama, these people had to check in periodically until their case was heard, or possibly wear a tracking device,etc. This proved to be very affordable and effective : 99% of people showed up for their hearing.

This was a system that was working - but the Trump administration blew it up into a fake "crisis", as if it were a great danger to the American people.

By drumming up enough fear, they could then try to justify their extremely inhumane treatment of people who were trying to save their families' lives and fleeing terrible situations in their home countries where the governments are so corrupt they couldn't expect any help. These are Central American governments, by the way, that we helped establish, and which have our support, allowing them to continue exploiting & preying on their people. (But that's another, very long and tragic story.)

In order to carry out Attorney General Jeff Sessions' new cruel policies, U.S.immigration officials have been making people wait on the bridges to the only legal entry points, sometimes for weeks, under the 100 degree sun, only letting in perhaps one family a day.

In desperation some people cross the river and then give themselves in, asking for asylum, which still is legal. But under Trump & Sessions' new "zero-tolerance" policy they are charged with a crime ( "illegal entry" is a felony misdemeanor.... a civil case) and put in detention with their children taken from them, and no idea if they will ever see them again.

Yes, our Trump Administration has said it will no longer separate families. But it has been so incompetent, having no real system or plan on how to identify and handle the 3,000 children it did take away , that it remains a huge question of how long it will take to reunite the children with their mothers and fathers. In spite of court orders to return the 105 children under 5 years of age by Tuesday, July10, only 2 so far have been brought together. The remaining thousands of children over 5 are ordered by court to be reunited by July 24. This seems very unlikely to happen.

One problem the government has cited is that they don't know where some of the parents are, because they have deported them already ( without their children ! ) The trauma of all this to the children is something that can never be undone. To those who feel , like our Swanton/Sheldon Representatives Brian Savage and Mariana Gamache, that somehow it is justified to rip families apart as some sort of hostage strategy to push immigration policy, I want

NURSES’ STRIKE POSSIBILITY DISHEARTENING Editor’s note: This commentary is by Allie Stickney, who is the chair of the board for the UVM Medical Center.

The UVM Medical Center has been negotiating with the union that represents our nurses to come to an agreement on a fair contract.

The nurses union let us know they intend to begin a 48-hour strike on the morning of July 12. While that does not necessarily mean there will be a strike and there is still enough time to reach resolution, UVM Medical Center leaders are hard at work developing a contingency plan to ensure patients get the care they need should there be a work stoppage.

As chair of the board at UVM Medical Center, I have seen up close how people prevail through some of life’s most difficult moments with the help of a skilled, caring health care professional.

I have personally been at the bedside of my seriously ill children and terminally ill husband at UVM Medical Center, surrounded by caregivers who did whatever they could to heal and ease the pain.

After these several months of a truly terrible and shameful policy, that we still have to untangle and make as right as possible, we should never allow anything like this to happen again. Yes, we need real and rational immigration reform, including a path to citizenship for our DACA young people. Under Obama, who was the "deporterin-chief", deporting more people than any other president before him ( but focusing far more on those who had criminal records than our current President ), a bipartisan immigration reform bill could have passed had Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell

priorities. We listened carefully to their message, and know there is more work to be done to empower nurses with a voice in decisions about staffing and patient care. I am encouraged that through the leadership of Eileen Whalen, president, and Kate FitzPatrick, chief nursing officer, both nurses themselves, we have made meaningful progress toward this goal. I was pleased to learn about the shared decision-making approach that has 114 nurses in leadership positions engaged. It was important to be reminded that since 2016, more than 300 RNs and 400 support staff have been hired, a total of 754 full-time employees. More than 120 of these positions are new. These efforts will surely improve the experience of our patients. The board is keenly interested in this work and looks forward to continued development in this area.

I think of all of this as I observe the nurse contract negotiations, and I am disheartened by the possibility that UVM Medical Center nurses may strike. There can be no question our nurses are a bedrock of this organization and must be valued for their dedicated, skilled work. I have followed these negotiations carefully and

Montgomery and dozens of other school districts.

The current proposal from the Secretary of Education is to merge the Swanton, Highgate, and Franklin districts into one school district. Voters would elect seven schoolboard members to oversee the district, four from Swanton, two from Highgate, and one from Franklin.

This comes despite a unanimous vote from voters last year in Franklin not to merge, and an almost unanimous vote from Highgate to do the same.

Sheldon, which is also currently a member of the Franklin Northwest Supervisory Union, would be moved into the Franklin Northeast Supervisory Union if the State Board approves the Secretary’s statewide plan.

Franklin may be the perfect example of why schools should not be forced to merge, as Senator Randy Brock said during the meeting.

When Act 46 was being proposed in Franklin it was a perfect example of a school district that was doing everything correctly, according to Brock, who spoke of the low cost per pupil along with the high test scores.

The original bill, H361, as it was designated in 2015, had little support from Franklin County’s delegation from the very start, in fact, out of Franklin County’s eight Republicans, two Democrats, and one Independent, only one representative, Kathleen Keenan, a Democrat, voted in favor of the bill that ultimately is now forcing the mergers.

The plan for the three districts who are still fighting forced mergers is to show up in force at the State Board Meeting on Wednesday in Newark to express their discontent for the statewide plan.

Franklin and Highgate are up first, scheduled to be heard from 9:30-9:50am. Montgomery is set to make their case at 11:05, followed

by Sheldon at 11:25.

Margret McLean, a very vocal opponent of forced mergers throughout the state, was also in attendance Tuesday to share with locals on the strategies to fight the merger.

“You have to show up and fight,” McLean told voters, “You have to

show up in force.”

McLean said bringing public officials is key, but bringing a solid number of people to the board meeting to support an alternative structure is really what is key.

A quick hand tally indicated that dozens of residents planned to attend the Newark meeting, leading to a logistic decision to look for a school bus to charter to the meeting. It was not determined as of press time, on Wednesday, if a school bus would actually be available for the trip.

Of the six current legislators in attendance, three (Corey Parent,

Carolyn Branagan, and Brian Savage) said they would support a bill to repeal Act 46. The other two (Cindy Weed and Randy Brock) said they would seek an overhaul of the current bill, but not a full repeal. Representative Beyor was in attendance, but did not speak or sit at the head table of legislators.

Of the five legislators who spoke, all of them except Branagan have announced their plans to seek election in November.

The State Board of Education will have the last say on the current merger plans, which will likely be decided in the coming weeks.

That doesen’t rule out a legal battle, or a some other last ditch effort to keep from merging.

In Bennington County, one elementary school has opted to fight the statewide merger plan by closing their school, leasing the building to an independently run private school, and issuing vouchers to their local students.

This allows those students to go to their local school, or any other elementary school of their choice.

It also opens up the opportunity for students of other school districts who also have school choice to attend their elementary school.

Ann LaRoche enjoyed her second hole-in-one on the golf course on the sixth hole at the Enosburg Country Club. LaRoche was using her pitching wedge on June 3rd when she made her shot.

This isn’t her first hole-in-one; she enjoyed another one about ten years ago.

Golfing has been a part of LaRoche’s life since her dad introduced her to the sport when she was a teenager, and she has gone on to teach it to her children and grandchildren.

“I put a par three in at my house for the grandkids,” said LaRoche with a chuckle, “I hope the young folks will get into the sport. I learned to play when the Enosburg Country Club was a nine-hole course.”

LaRoche, who has had two back surgeries, suffers from Rheumatoid Arthritis and Fibromyalgia, has not let her ailments hold her back.

She finds that time on the course is just as beneficial as attending

physical therapy; the golfing keeps all her muscles more limber and also gives her time to get out and enjoy time with friends.

“This keeps me moving. I have to keep going even if it hurts,” said LaRoche, who now uses a wood more than she used to and often takes half-swings to allow her to keep golfing, “I look a little awkward when I play, but I know I’ll hurt if I’m on the course or sitting on the couch.”

A lot of folks have opted to get out on the green, whether they are in great physical condition or battling health problems.

“Some people I know have multiple sclerosis and they still play. People had the patience to play with one golfer who had serious osteoporosis, but he wanted to play. We have others who have physical difficulties, but we are all able to play socially and have some fun in our lives,” said LaRoche.

Golfing fills a void for many who retire and find that they miss the relationships they had with coworkers during their working

years.

“As you get into retirement you establish a new community of friends at the golf course,” LaRoche explained.

LaRoche wasn’t the only one to sink a hole-in-one last month.

Damian Blouin also had a hole-inone at the Enosburg Country Club.

Blouin was using a gap wedge on hole 15 on June 29th.

This Sunday families and teams will take to the Enosburg Country Club green to play in honor of Gerry Whitney. Whitney was a board member at the country club and an avid golfer.

Seeing young people embrace the sport of golf was something Whitney desired to promote. He was in the process of helping to secure family tees for the Enosburg Country Club when he passed away from cancer.

“Getting the family tees was a passion for Gerry; he really did feel that we needed to get the youth involved and appreciating golf like we did. He loved the family aspect of golf; he felt that it was something that a family could

do together,” said Lisa Whitney, Gerry’s wife.

Gerry worked with Dwayne Feeley to begin the family tee project, desiring to have the tees be PGA approved.

“When Gerry passed away, I picked up the stick and ran with it.

I said, ‘I am going to get this done for you, honey’,” said Lisa, “It’s so rewarding to see everything put into place. It was a lot of work figuring out the yardage and where the kids should play. We worked on it for a couple years and here we are!”

Stephanie Machia who serves on the board of directors at the Enosburg Country Club noted that the family tees provide golfers with a lot of options.

“The family tees aren’t just for young golfers; they are for families and beginners as well.

Because they are PGA approved an experienced golfer can play them and post their score to GHIN,” Machia explained.

hesitant to give up their game while a beginner is learning. The family tees provide an excellent opportunity for everyone to enjoy the game.

“When a child or a beginner comes along with an experienced golfer it can be hard for them to complete a game. Through the use of family tees, the experienced golfer can change the clubs they use and adjust their strategy, adding an interesting twist to the game,” Machia pointed out.

The length of time golf takes to play has been cited as one reason why some have left the sport.

Machia explained that the family tees allow for an experienced golfer to play for an hour and a half and post their score due to the PGA status of the tees.

The second annual Gerry Whitney Memorial Golf Tournament will be played in Enosburg this Sunday to honor Gerry and his love for the sport.

The tournament will welcome old and young golfers alike.

Post 1 Splits Wins and Losses

Franklin County Post 1 earned a 10-5 league win over Montpelier on Monday night, playing at the beautiful Montpelier Recreation Field, home of the Vermont Mountianers.

Kristian Viljanin threw for Franklin County. He surrendered two runs on four hits over four and a third innings, striking out one.

Taylor Yates threw two and twothirds innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Colby Brouillette, Caleb Laroche, Alec Burns, and Tucker Gaudette all had multiple hits.

Brouillette went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the team in hits.

Franklin County earned two non-league wins against the Montreal Vipers in Montreal on Saturday with scores of 8 to 3 and 10 to 0. Brouillette’s bat boosted Franklin County’s offense in the first game of the doubleheader.

Brouillette went 4-for-5 at the plate, including a grand slam.

Franklin County got things moving in the first inning, when Caleb Laroche doubled on a 3-2 count, scoring two runs.

Franklin County put up six runs in the third inning. The rally was led by a home run by Brouillette and a double by Karson Fortin.

Franklin County got things moving in the second inning of game two. Dominic Liscinsky doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.

“For me, it gets all the family out on the course to spend the afternoon together,” said Lovelette.

Gerry was a big part of seeing reduced rates for families established at the country club and currently, junior clinics are offered periodically to help younger golfers hone their skills.

Sunday’s tournament is just about full, but Lisa welcomes families who would like to participate to call and come out to enjoy a day of golf. Tee time begins at 2 pm and includes nine holes of golf.

Families in the area are embracing Gerry’s legacy and Lisa couldn’t be happier. Last year the tournament drew ten families and this year twenty families have signed up to play.

“This was a surprise for me and made me so happy,” said Lisa.

Naming the tournament in Gerry’s honor was a fitting tribute to a man who loved the game and wanted to see families enjoy the sport.

Montgomery As Submitted By Lois Lumbra Thankfully the mornings gave us a few hours of cool fresh air, before we were sweltering from the humidity and the blazing sun.

I must say though, the plants have loved this humidity, they are thriving and look so healthy.

Hope everyone had a great 4th of July. The Montgomery parade had 35 or so entries that battled the heat to give us a great 4th of July parade down Center Main Street.

I have had a very pleasant Sunday, went to Church, came home and daughter Penny and I prepared dinner, following our meal we sat in the living room and chatted awhile before she left to do other errands.

The children have enjoyed the Water Park at Jay Peak, Black Falls Brook to cool off and picking fresh strawberries in the back yard, and visiting cousins in the area. Most of these children were under the age of 10. Grandparents Mike and Deb Modde have had a wonderful week showing the children around Montgomery, as Deb has wonderful memories of Montgomery. Her sister Sue Adams and grandchildren were in town from Mass. visiting and staying with sister Beth CraneDaybell.

June 29-July 6.. Several family members of Mike and Deb (Crane) Modde from Illinois rented the

FAMILY TIES FUEL FUNDRAISER explained Sara Barrette, Bella’s mom, “we were all so surprised.

My sister had all the regular tests done, but nothing abnormal showed up. It was very traumatic in the beginning because everyone was so shocked!”

After Norah had her surgery and came home from Boston the family began to see just how much she had been struggling with her heart condition.

“When she was born we were just so happy to have her that we didn’t realize how sick she was.

Because of her condition, Norah didn’t have the same blood oxygen level a healthy person had, so she was much paler and quieter than she should have been but we didn’t realize it. Once her heart was fixed, she got her color back and she was very talkative,” said Sara, “It was a huge difference!”

Bella has never had an opportunity to visit the Boston Children’s Hospital, but it’s a trip she’s planning to make before the summer is over.

“I’ve been talking with a lady from the hospital, Elizabeth Benway, and she has told me that we can come down to the hospital and take a tour,” explained Bella, “I’m looking forward to that because I want to be a pediatric surgeon or cardiologist down there so I can help children like Norah.”

Bella, who is going into the eighth grade this year, is no stranger when it comes to helping others and raising money for people in need.

“She has raised money for UVM Children’s Hospital’s “Big Change Round Up” with her friend,

By Ruthie Laroche For the County Courier Four years ago Norah Henry was born, a beautiful, quiet baby girl who was joyfully welcomed into the arms of her waiting family. Everything seemed to be going smoothly until her doctors and nurses began to notice that she was a little too pale and a little too quiet.

Bella Bigelow, Norah’s cousin, watched her aunt and uncle as they took steps to find out what was troubling Norah. That process led the family to the Boston Children’s Hospital where three-month-old Norah underwent surgery to repair her heart.

Shortly after her first surgery, the doctors informed the family that Norah would need another operation to install a pacemaker.

Norah’s time at the Boston Children’s Hospital is nothing she will ever remember but Bella did not forget the care and attention that Norah and her family received while they were there.

This spring Bella, who has always loved giving to others through fundraising efforts, turned her thoughts toward the Boston Children’s Hospital and began to put a plan in motion that she had been thinking of for quite a while.

“You can dream about something, and it’s possible to have it happen, but only if you make it happen,” said Linda Barrette, Bella’s grandmother, “That’s something Bella says.”

Bella has raised over a thousand dollars for the Boston Children’s Hospital’s Cardiac Unit over the last month.

“I’m raising money for the heart center at the Boston Children’s Hospital because my cousin Norah had her surgery there, and I wanted to give back to the place that fixed her heart,” said Bella.

“She was born with a hole in her heart and a defective valve,”

Victoria’s team. She was very impressed by what Victoria and her family do to give back; it made a big impression on her. She also particpates in other fundraising efforts through her church and school,” said Sara.

This year she was ready to set her sights on the Boston Children’s Hospital.

“I was turning 13 this year and I really wanted to do something big,” said Bella with a smile.

“Initially Bella had wanted to bring toys and gifts for the kids,”

Due to the nature of the illnesses that many of the children are battling the hospital thought that raising money would be better than bringing outside items in.

“The hospital suggested that we do an online fundraiser because it would be safer for everyone,” said Sara.

Mary Carla Couture

MILTON: Mary Carla Couture, 57, died unexpectedly, July 4th, 2018, due to complications from the extreme heat during the week of the 4th of July.

Mary was born on November 22, 1960 in Burlington at the Degoesbriand Hospital, the daughter of Raymond and Fanny (Griffin) Couture.

Mary had a strong faith and loved to share her love for God. Mary had worked as a 2nd Grade Teacher in Greenfield, MA and more recently as a preschool teacher at the North Avenue Alliance Church in Burlington.

She had a great love for teaching children and enjoyed teaching religion at the Cornerstone Community Church in Milton.

She is survived by her sisters and brothers, Barbara Couture of Winooski, Cathy Mongeon and her husband Roger of Milton, Eddie Couture and his wife Amy of Milton and Ray Couture and his wife Kathy of Winooski, by her sister-in-law Charlene Couture of NY, her friends Jodi Bouchard of So. Burlington, Robin McNamara Brown of NY, Sue Comeau of FL and by several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents and by her brother Raymond.

Friends called on the family on Wednesday morning from 10-11 am in the Minor Funeral Home.

A Funeral Service followed at 11 am, with burial following in the Cloverdale Cemetery in Westford.

Following the burial, a pot luck was held at the Cornerstone Community Church Hall, located on Bombardier Road in Milton.

he immediately joined the US Army Reserve where he spent two years prior to enlisting in the Air Force where he proudly served his country for six more years. On September 20, 1969 he married the love of his life, Patricia Gardner McDonald, who survives him.

He was employed for almost thirty years with the Vermont Maple Orchards Company in Essex Junction where he helped supervise the distribution of Vermont Maple products all over the world. In recent years, Bill would be seen around his home town of Milton and helping out behind the register at Frenchy’s Meat Market. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him.

HIGHGATE – Elizabeth O. Hakey, age 75, passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2018 at the VNA Respite House in Colchester.

She was born in Burlington on December 12, 1942 to the late Gordon & Naoma (Norman) Ouimette.

Betty married Richard, the love of her life on August 31, 1963, just shy of celebrating 55 years of marriage.

Betty truly enjoyed helping people. She loved her position as a Teacher’s Aide in Highgate and in Enosburg schools. Following her beloved career as an aide, she moved on to her true passion, working at Clark’s House of Flowers and eventually started her own business creating and selling dried flower arrangements. Betty would attend craft shows and enjoyed socializing with fellow crafters. Betty then followed her heart by staying home to care for Matthew, her beloved grandson, which was the most rewarding job of all.

Every Fall, Betty and Richard would head out on a road trip excursion for two. Their two to three-week adventures eventually led them to visit every state in the Continental United States.

Betty enjoyed spending this time with the love of her life, and kept detailed notes of where they lodged and highlights from each state, and created a beautiful memory book.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Hakey of Highgate; their children, Scott Hakey and his wife, Mary of Norman, OK, and Karen Hakey of Highgate; grandson, Matthew Minckler; siblings,

SOUTH BURLINGTON/ MILTON: On July 7, 2018, after an extraordinary life, Gertrude Kristiansen passed peacefully at her home in South Burlington with the same courage and independent spirit with which she lived.

Marie Corinne Gertrude Clavel Kristiansen was born August 28, 1924 to Jérôme and Marie-Anne (Desjardins) Clavel. Most of her childhood was spent in the village of Ste. Sophie in the province of Quebec, Canada. She lived one year in Joliette at a home for orphans run by the Sisters of Providence following the death of her mother in 1928 – a loss that she carried with her throughout her life.

At the age of 11, she was enrolled at the Ecole Normale in nearby St. Jérôme where she spent four years studying to be a teacher.

Upon graduation, having not yet reached the legal age to teach, she requested permission from the Canadian government and received a special authorization a year later to begin her stint in education. She taught for two years and although she enjoyed her students, she realized that her talents could be better utilized elsewhere. At the age of 18, she enrolled in a three-month course of business studies and graduated with proficiency in typing, shorthand and bookkeeping. From the age of 18 until her marriage, she worked for various businesses in the greater Montreal area, with her last position being that of a traveling service representative for Bell Telephone Co. of Canada.

He really enjoyed Elvis and NASCAR. His favorite driver was Jeff Gordon. He was known as a joker and loved to make others laugh.

ST. ALBANS: R. Clark Lamson, 80, of St. Albans, Vermont passed away July 3rd, 2018, in Burlington, Vermont from injuries from a motorcycle accident, surrounded by his loving family.

Clark was born on June 18th, 1938, to Rollin and Bertha Lamson. He attended Burlington High School. He went on to get an Associates Degree at Champlain College in Accounting. Clark was an avid motorcycle rider and took to the road as often as possible. He dedicated his life to working charitable events, helping others. Clark believed that giving of himself was the ultimate way to show his appreciation for a fulfilling life. He and his wife Donalee provided food for Martha’s Kitchen for nine years ensuring the pantry for less fortunate was always full.

Clark was a major contributor to the Army and the Air Force Family Advocacy programs with donations to deployed soldiers and airman and family support during holiday seasons. He served years as Deacon at the First Congregational

Church, and many board positions in the Loyal Order of the Moose and active of the American Legion Riders, providing thousands in donations and fundraising events.

Clark lost the love of his life in July 2016. They were happily married for 50 blissful years since February 2nd, 1966. He leaves behind him five children: sons, Paul and his wife Terri, Scott and wife Robin, and Garth and wife Angela; daughters, Debbie and husband Shane, and Tina. He had seven grandchildren, and eight great- grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Rosamund and her husband Ed Pariseau.

Alburgh/Enosburg – Albert Wyman Sulia, a former resident of Alburgh and for the past several years a the Brownway Residence,

passed away Friday, February 2nd, 2018, at the St. Albans Healthcare & Rehab Center.

Born in North Hero, on November 23rd, 1930, he was the son of the late Albert and Julia (Way) Sulia. Albert was 87 years old.

For many years Albert was a farm hand for several farms in the Alburgh and Grand Isle communities.

Albert is survived by his siblings: Robert Sulia and his wife, Kay, of Trenton, New Jersey, Lillian Sulia of Kentucky, Julia Jane Hubbard and husband, Gerald, of Aloha, Oregon, Theresa Jarvis Monty of Vermont, Dorothy Bodily Daniel of Boise, Idaho as well as several nieces and nephews and his many friends at Brownway.

Jennifer was born in Caribou, Maine on November 14, 1969 the daughter of the late Judith (Conroy) Dussault and stepdaughter of Daniel Dussault.

Her life revolved around her family. She loved hosting family gatherings and spending time with her children, grand children, and great grandchildren. Jennifer also enjoyed cooking, reading, shopping, getting her toe nails painted, and working in her garden.

a three-month European tour. On board the ship she met her future husband, Erling Kristiansen, a Danish national.

At the completion of her travels, she and Erling returned to Canada where they were married in Montreal on July 28, 1956. They settled in Frelighsburg, Quebec and lived there until immigrating to the United States in 1957. After a year in Swanton, they moved to Milton in 1958.

Our mom’s family was her utmost priority. She worked selflessly, tirelessly, devotedly (and thanklessly!) for the next 17 years running her household and caring for her family. In 1978 she returned to work at New England Telephone Co. after our father became disabled.

This necessitated her getting her driver’s license at the age of 56!

She retired after 11 years at the age of 65. Her retirement years were spent reading (her favorite hobby), doing volunteer work, traveling the world and spending time with family and friends.

Our mom is survived by her three children, who lovingly cared for her and had the privilege of accompanying her on her final journey, Eileen of Burlington, Poul (Makoto Nakura) of Forest Hills, NY and Linda of Milton.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews in Canada and Denmark. She was predeceased by her husband Erling in 1985 and her beloved son Per in 1998.

In addition, she was predeceased by her siblings, Madeleine, Jean, Jacques, Lucien, Suzanne and Fernande. She is also survived by her best friend of 75 years, Denise Metthé of Laval, Quebec and special friends Dennis Gallagher, Joan Bergeron and Joanna Dague.

Our mom was the matriarch of our family and a true renaissance woman. She lived her life without fear, with indomitable strength, courage, grace and a quiet dignity.

Her intelligence, good sense, self-sacrifice and compassion carried her through good times and personal tragedies. She was a teacher by example and she continues to inspire us. We have been truly blessed and privileged to have this incredible woman as our mom.

We give special thanks to Dr. Chris Hebert for the caring, respectful and compassionate care he provided to our mom throughout the years. He was her partner in her health care. Also, to Karin Hammer, Wayne and Laurie

“I think that people should not judge other people because of something that happened to them or because they are born a certain way. Everybody is a human,” said Bella, “and there’s nothing really stopping you from doing what you want to do. If there are people who want to fundraise to help others, just do it! It will help someone in some way, whether it’s exactly the way you wanted to do it or not. It might be a little work to raise the money, but it really makes you feel good!’

Sara has embraced Bella’s love of helping others, even when things haven’t seemed to be going smoothly, and Bella has appreciated her mom’s support.

“She has always helped me.

Once this fundraiser got going she was as excited as I was! I don’t think I could have done this without my mom. She’s always been a good support,” said Bella, “she’s always there for me.”

Bella has a lot of support from her family, but she’s also spent a lot of her days at the shop over the years, and she attributes some of her success to growing up in that environment.

“I’ve learned how to talk to people; there are so many adults who come through and I get to talk with them,” said Bella.

“It’s given her a big tribe of people that want to support her when she does want to do something like this,” said Sara, “a lot of the names of contributors on the website are people Bella has met through the garage.”

With goals of entering a medical field to help children, Bella knows that she has a lot of work ahead of

much this organization values our nurses. This proposal is double the hospital’s initial offer and represents significant movement

on the part of UVM Medical Center in an effort to reach agreement and avoid a strike.

All negotiations require understanding and compromise.

Nobody wants a strike. I urge both sides to continue listening

to one another and seeking out common ground. The community is counting on it.

I know when we get through this we will reconnect and heal, through the large caring community we are all fortunate to call home.

When no responses came Sara encouraged Bella to do the fundraiser for UVM instead, a hospital that Bella had done fundraising for in the past.

“I was trying to do things the easy way, but she was determined to work with Boston. She wanted to do the fundraising for the place that Norah went to, and she did it all,” said Sara.

One day a response finally came.

“My mom picked me up after school and told me to read an email on her phone. It hadn’t been my best day, and I really didn’t want to do anything else,” said Bella, “when I saw the email address I was afraid to click on it and open it! I didn’t know what it was going to say!”

When Bella found that the email contained a positive response she shared it with her Aunt Meredith, Norah’s mom.

“She was so happy that I would do this for Norah,” said Bella.

Bella went on the hospital’s website and created an online account through the Boston Children’s Hospital Trust umbrella.

Bella didn’t wait for the internet to do all the work. She rolled up her sleeves and found ways to raise money to supplement her online efforts.

One of her fundraisers included a bake sale which she hosted at her family’s auto dealership in Swanton, Barrette Ford.

The evening before the bake sale temperatures soared and Sara nixed the idea of baking in the house. Bella found a way to make it happen by getting up early the

The Ed Weed Fish Culture Station rears and stocks all of Vermont’s landlocked Atlantic salmon in Lake Champlain, approximately 145,000 yearling smolts each year.

“About 400,000 eggs are needed to reach our stocking goal, which would require collecting 200 to 250 feral spawning pairs annually,” said Kevin Kelsey, the Ed Weed Fish Culture Station supervisor.

While Hatchery Brook has been closed to fishing for many years, heavy fishing pressure and associated salmon take from fall spawning concentrations at adjacent Hatchery Cove may be limiting the abundance of salmon available for egg collection.

Game wardens and hatchery staff have also noted illegal activity and conflicts among anglers there.

Seeing a thirteen-year-old girl devote the time and energy to fundraising that Bella does is unusual, but she feels that it has flowed naturally from her heart.

She also believes others can accomplish great things if they decide to invest the time and effort into the cause.

“Keep trying even if you don’t get a response right away. Find someone who is willing to help you reach your goals,” said Bella, “You just have to do it!”

Bella does fundraisers on her own, but she is also active with fundraising through her school.

“I’ve said this is her summer of fundraising because she’s got so many going,” said Sara with a chuckle, “but this one is the biggest one in her heart.”

When asked what inspires her to keep fundraising, Bella’s response came without hesitation.

“Norah inspires me to do things,” said Bella, of her fouryear-old cousin, “she always has held her own and nothing has stopped her.”

Norah, who has Down Syndrome along with her heart condition, spends the work day at the dealership where she gets plenty of attention and care.

“She keeps us all smiling,” said Sara, “She contributes a lot to our family and to this business. So many customers enjoy interacting with her.”
