There’s truly something special about a great pub! Where the fire’s glowing, the ale’s flowing, and the locals always have a story to share. Here in Suffolk, we’re fortunate to have an abundance of proper pubs, from snug country inns tucked away in peaceful villages to bustling town spots full of charm, and plenty of characters too.
This guide is your invitation to explore the very best pubs Suffolk has to offer. Whether you’re searching for the ideal Sunday roast, a quiet pint after a bracing coastal walk, or simply fancy trying somewhere new, we’ve got it covered. Think of it as a trusted local sharing their favourite haunts.
We’ve travelled the winding lanes, tested the local brews, and taken up a fair few bar stools so you don’t have to (though we’d certainly encourage you to). Expect recommendations ranging from traditional cask ale pubs to hidden gems with superb beer gardens, alongside places where the food matches the drink.
Suffolk’s pub scene is about more than what is poured - it’s about atmosphere, community, and those small quirks that give each pub its personality. Along the way, you’ll uncover tales of smugglers, ghostly happenings, and landlords who greet everyone by name.
So, whether you’re a Suffolk local, a visitor passing through, or simply keen to experience genuine pub culture, we hope this guide leads you to memorable meals, great evenings, and perhaps even your new favourite pint.
Che s!

Our o ering has developed into what we feel a quayside pub should be. Great beers, a friendly warm welcome, food that you would expect in a good British hostelry with additional dishes that reflect our backgrounds and passion.
We want you to feel the history in the pub, so we’ve been very careful not to remove the old charm and character. The floor tiles may have been professionally cleaned, but they are still wobbly and remind you of sailors past spilling beer on them.
However, a pub is about people, so come and enjoy it with us and let us welcome you in. Check out our website (displayed at the bottom of the page) for full details of opening times, menus and events.

Global beers, ciders, and rare spirits. Enjoy killer cocktails, fine wines, and alcohol-free options in a palate-stunning range.

After a two year renovation, The Swan Inn reopened in November 2023 preserving the cosy and historic Tudor core and adding a modern glasssided bar, restaurant, kitchen and brewhouse.
At the side of the building sits a large sun-soaked terrace with views of the Stour and to the rear, a large lawn garden with a 100 metre hop yard where English dwarf varieties thrive.
We were named Historic England’s ‘Pub of the Year’ in 2025. The judges appreciated the sensitive restoration undertaken and the quality of the new bar and facilities including conversion of the former kitchen into a games room.
As family owned and run business, we aim to welcome all families with/without pets and to look after people in moments of celebration and reflection. We have a number of rooms for private events and a large space for presentations and drinks parties.
The garden can comfortably site a large marquee with space for 100 seated guests and we look forward to hosting memorable events here!
We’re easily reached from the A12, just three minutes J30 southbound and J29 northbound. We are waiting, see you soon!

The Three Horseshoes is a traditional English pub, with the oldest part of the building dating back to the 14th century.
The name of Three Horseshoes was often given to the Inn or Public House situated next to a forge or blacksmith. Over the centuries, the building has gone through many changes and additions but has always kept true to its roots by remaining a public house serving the village of Cockfield, as did the oldest part of the building, that once stood as a medieval meeting hall.
“Cockfield” is derived from the Old English meaning “Cohha’s open land”. Cohha was a Saxon Chieftain who died in the area and was buried here, in Cohha’s field. In time, the name changed to Cockfield; It’d be romantic to think that this building was built on his burial site.
There’s a wonderful, welcoming atmosphere in this beautiful pub and the food and drink is superb. You can choose to dine in the lively bar area, or the quieter atmospheric lounge or gallery areas.

The present building, dating back to 1540, stands on the remains of the outer defences (probably a gatehouse) of Hugh de Bigod’s Castle of the 12th century.
The Inn has a rich and varied history, welcoming many famous and infamous visitors and patrons. The highwayman Tom Hardy often lived at the inn. He was probably an associate of Dick Turpin who robbed two young women in the marketplace in front of the Tuns.
The Prince Regent visited twice, part of his reputed four-poster bed remains in his former bedroom.
Other famous regulars in the early 20th century include; Sir. Alfred Munnings (artist), Sir. Henry Rider Haggard (author) and Rev. James Woodforde (clergyman), who visited in 1788.
Tours are usually available upon request.
