Pig sector steadies as cautious recovery continues
Stability is a key goal for pig producers keen to move forward.
The UK pig industry is in a more stable position than for several years – but market pressure means 2026 will be a year of consolidation rather than growth.
Demand is holding up but analysts say stability should not be mistaken for strength. The sector has steadied but UK producers remain exposed to the same global fluctuations that reshaped the in the first place.
UK pig meat output is forecast to reach around 972,000 tonnes in 2026, a marginal decline on the previous year, according to the latest forecast Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).
That modest drop masks a deeper structural shift. Slaughter numbers are expected to fall by about 1.2% to 10.3 million head, reflecting a continued contraction in the national breeding herd.
Production has held up because pigs are getting heavier. Carcase weights are forecast to remain elevated – suggesting that efficiency gains, rather than herd expansion, are now driving output.
Tight margins
If output is stable, profitability is not. The industry continues to operate on tight margins, with little room for error – with some producers doing well and others operating at a loss.
Feed remains the dominant cost. It accounts for around 60% of total production costs, according to AHDB analysis. That leaves many producers highly exposed to global grain markets.
While feed costs have eased slightly, they remain volatile. At the same time, pig prices have

softened, with the Standard Pig Price falling to around 201p/kg in late 2025, down from earlier highs. That price fell a further still during the first few months of 2026.
There are also signs of pressure building within the system. Market reports point to a surplus of pigs on farm in early 2026, with additional kill days required to work through supplies.
That combination – rising throughput, softening prices and high costs – underlines how finely balanced the market remains. In this environment, good management matters more than ever.
Small gains in feed conversion, mortality or growth rates can determine whether a business is profitable or not. Larger, more integrated units are better placed to capture those gains. Smaller producers face a tougher path.
Global trade
Beyond the farm gate, global markets continue to play a decisive role. UK exports have been resilient. Pig meat exports rose by 3% in 2025 to 306,200 tonnes, driven in part by strong demand from the Far East.
China has now overtaken the EU as the UK’s largest export destination by volume –a shift that reflects both opportunity and risk. China is pursuing greater self-sufficiency, and demand can change quickly depending on domestic supply
At the same time, competition is intensifying. Brazilian pork is gaining ground globally, offering lower-cost product that appeals to price-sensitive buyers. That puts pressure on UK exporters, particularly in markets where cost outweighs provenance.
Imports also remain a key factor domestically. Although UK pig meat imports fell slightly in 2025, the country remains heavily reliant on imported product — particularly for bacon and processed meats.
This limits the ability of UK producers to push prices higher. Cheaper imports effectively cap the domestic market.
Domestic demand
If supply is constrained and trade uncertain, demand offers some support. Retail
consumption has held up, with pork maintaining its position as a relatively affordable protein. In a period of pressure on household budgets, that matters.
There are also signs that consumption could edge higher. AHDB analysis suggests pig meat demand may grow modestly in 2026 as cost-conscious consumers seek value for money.
Foodservice demand is also recovering, supporting higher-value cuts and improving carcase balance. For now, however, demand remains broadly supportive — providing a degree of underpinning for the sector.
But the outlook is not without risk.
Consumer confidence remains fragile. Rising energy costs and broader inflation – triggered by conflict between Iran, Israel and the USA –could quickly change purchasing behaviour.
There are also longer-term shifts in diets, with some consumers reducing meat consumption altogether. But pork’s status as a healthy, high-protein meat means it will remain popular with most people.
A more efficient, more exposed industry
The UK pig sector continues to emerge from years of upheaval as a smaller but more productive industry.
Production is no longer driven by expansion. Instead, it is increasingly shaped by efficiency – including heavier pigs, better genetics and tighter management. Analysts say that trend is unlikely to reverse.
That is arguably good news for the producers who remain – but little consolation for those unable to make the transition. The national breeding herd continues to contract, limiting future growth potential.
The industry is becoming more exposed to global forces. Feed costs, export markets and import competition all lie largely outside domestic control. At the same time, there are also ongoing structural challenges.
Industry outlook
While 2025 saw a modest 2.3% increase in production, that growth was driven largely by heavier carcase weights rather than more animals. That trend is likely to continue as the industry cautiously looks to the future.
For the time being, the most likely outcome for the sector is consolidation. Margins will remain tight. Cost control will be critical. And international trade flows will continue to shape the UK market.
For now, production will remain broadly stable, supported by efficiency gains but constrained by herd size. Prices are expected to stay under pressure, with some potential for improvement depending on demand and global conditions.
That said, producers have shown resilience before – adapting to shocks and structural change. That capacity remains intact. But the margin for error is slim – making the outlook one of cautious optimism and stability, rather than expansion.

The BPA website has an interactive search page for local suppliers of pedigree pork. The website also has full listings of suppliers of both breeding and finished pedigree pigs based on the latest information from the pedigree database.
The BPA has always recognised the individual identity of the breeds within the association. Each breed elects its own representatives who are the first point of contact for members with questions about pedigree breeding or problems to be resolved. Pig sector bets on innovation to secure its future
Investment in genetics, supply chains and science aims to rebuild resilience
Pig processors are turning to investment and innovation to stabilise output and restore competitiveness of the UK pig industry.
The reset follows years of rising costs and falling margins. Processors are investing in product development to capture more value. At the same time, breeding companies are tightening control over genetics to improve efficiency.
Farmers and processors are increasingly working together to test new collaborative models to spread risk. Meanwhile, on-farm technologies are targeting one of the sector’s most persistent constraints: animal health.
The shift reflects a recognition that the industry’s previous model — fragmented, cost-
driven and exposed to shocks — is no longer sufficient. Neither is it enough to secure a long-term future.
Fragile baseline
It does, however, reflect a sector still recovering from the disruption of 2020-22, when labour shortages in abattoirs led to a backlog of pigs on farms and significant financial losses. Although conditions have improved, structural challenges remain.
According to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board, the UK is only around 60% self-sufficient in pork. Imports continue to play a central role in meeting demand, particularly for processed products such as bacon and ham.
AHDB analysis also shows that while feed costs have eased from their 2022 peak, they remain historically high relative to pig prices. Producer margins therefore remain exposed to volatility in global grain markets.
At the same time, regulatory and market pressures are intensifying. The removal of zinc oxide, stricter welfare expectations and retailer-led sustainability targets all require investment at farm level.
The result is a sector that must improve productivity while meeting higher standards, say analysts. This has come without a clear mechanism for recovering costs.
Capturing value
One response is to move away from commodity production towards higher-value products. Once a niche strategy for producers wary of cost-conscious consumers, adding value is increasingly important.
Pilgrim’s Europe has invested £350,000 in a new Pork Centre of Excellence at its Bromborough site, designed to accelerate product development and respond more quickly to consumer demand.
The facility combines development kitchens, specialist equipment and customer-facing spaces to support collaboration with retailers and foodservice companies. The aim is to shorten development cycles and bring new products to market more efficiently.

Ivan Siqueira, president of Pilgrim’s Europe, says: “It’s an important investment in our innovation capabilities and part of our wider ambition to create centres of excellence across our different business units at Pilgrim’s Europe.”
The focus is on categories such as barbecue products and ready-to-cook meals, where demand has proved more resilient than for standard cuts, explains Sam Reader, Pilgrim’s director of product and innovation.
“By bringing together modern kitchen facilities, specialist equipment and dedicated customer collaboration spaces, we’ve created an environment where ideas can move quickly from concept to reality.”
The approach aligns with broader market trends. AHDB data indicates that convenience and added-value pork products have outperformed primary cuts in recent years, reflecting changing consumer habits.
For processors, the implication is clear: margin growth is more likely to come from innovation and branding than from volume alone. Upstream, however, the focus is on productivity gains that can be sustained over time.
Genetic efficiency
Pilgrim’s Europe has acquired Hermitage AI, a specialist in porcine genetics, including operations in Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire. The deal includes two Genetic Transfer Centres and brings key breeding functions in-house.
The move reflects a wider industry trend towards vertical integration. Control over genetics allows companies to improve feed efficiency, growth rates and meat quality, while also enhancing resilience to disease.
Mr Siqueira says: “Integrating a pig genetics supply chain will enable continuous gains in production efficiency, meat quality, animal health and resilience, delivering long-term benefits for our

customers and UK consumers.”
Genetic improvement has been a significant driver of efficiency gains in global pig production –and the acquisition also secures collaboration with PIC UK, which supplies high-performance breeding stock.
PIC commercial director Craig Lewis says: “This evolution in operational stewardship secures the long-term availability of PIC’s high-quality boar genetics for UK pig producers, a key factor in supporting competitiveness across the supply chain.”
AHDB notes that improvements in feed conversion ratios have reduced the amount of feed required per kilogram of pork produced, lowering both costs and environmental impact.
But these gains are incremental. They require sustained investment and are often realised over several production cycles. For producers facing short-term financial pressure, the challenge is maintaining that investment.
Sharing risk
If productivity gains are one part of the solution, risk-sharing is another. Sofina Foods Europe, for example, has launched “Sofina Connect”, a programme designed to strengthen links between farmers, processors and customers.
The initiative aims to create a more coordinated supply chain, with shared responsibility for improvements in welfare, sustainability and productivity, says Graham Wilkinson, Sofina’s group agriculture director.
“At a time when domestic food security is more important than ever and demand for British pork is rising, it’s essential that we strengthen the pork supply chain in the UK,” says Mr Wilkinson.
The programme is structured around six pillars, including animal health, environmental performance and business resilience. It also introduces a central data platform — a “Welfare Hub” — to track progress and improve transparency.
Mr Wilkinson says: “The industry faces shared
challenges but too often it is producers on the ground that are left to bear the risk and cost of making improvements with no clear direction on what the industry really needs.”
Under the scheme, farmers who select areas for improvement are incentivised through a points-based system. The intention is to align onfarm practices with customer expectations while allowing flexibility in how those outcomes are delivered.
“By sharing risk across the supply chain we can support farmers to continually improve in areas that matter to customers and consumers,” Mr Wilkinson says.
“Genetic improvement has been a significant driver of efficiency gains in global pig production.”
The model reflects lessons from recent disruptions. The backlog of pigs during the pandemic highlighted the consequences of weak coordination between production and processing. More integrated approaches aim to reduce that risk in future.
Reducing antibiotics
Innovation is also being driven by regulatory pressure, particularly in relation to antibiotic use.
The UK pig sector has reduced antibiotic usage by around 75 per cent over the past decade, according to the Veterinary Medicines Directorate. Further reductions are likely to be more difficult, especially following the ban on zinc oxide.
Trials supported by the UK Agri-Tech Centre suggest in-water peracetic acid (PAA) could provide an alternative. On-farm trials conducted by Aga2Tech in Yorkshire are delivered it through drinking systems during the critical post-weaning period.
Aga2Tech chief executive Adrian Fellows says: “After seeing positive results in commercial poultry trials involving 250,000 broilers, we were keen to see how our patented peracetic acid treatment Peranan could help pigs too.”
Initial results show improvements in gut health
and reductions in scours, a common issue during weaning. Pigs on PAA had much firmer stools compared to the untreated ones, which is a huge win when it comes to their overall gut health.”
The trials also reduce reliance on antibiotics. “As a result, the trial farms were able to reduce or even eliminate the use of blanket antibiotics during the weaning phase,” says Mr Fellows.
If scalable, such technologies could help producers meet regulatory and market requirements without compromising performance. But adoption will depend on cost, ease of use and consistency of results across different systems.
Positive outlook
All these emerging initiatives share a common objective: to build a more resilient and competitive UK pig industry. Taken together, they represent a shift towards a more integrated model of production.
Investment in product innovation aims to increase margins. Control over genetics seeks to improve efficiency. Collaborative programmes attempt to align incentives. On-farm technologies target cost and welfare simultaneously.
Yet success is not guaranteed. AHDB analysis suggests that the UK pig sector continues to face structural disadvantages relative to major exporting countries, including higher costs and stricter regulatory requirements.
Import competition is therefore likely to remain a defining market feature. At the same time, the benefits of innovation are also unevenly distributed.
Larger, integrated businesses are often better placed to invest in new technologies and systems. Smaller producers may struggle to access the same opportunities, particularly in periods of financial stress.
The question is whether the current wave of investment can deliver gains quickly enough – and broadly enough – to stabilise the sector.
For now, there are signs of progress. Production is stabilising, supply chains are tightening and so are margins. New technologies are beginning to show results – but they need to be cost effective.
But the underlying challenge remains unchanged: to produce pork efficiently, sustainably and at a price that consumers are willing to pay. Innovation is becoming central to that task. The next phase will test whether it is sufficient.

Pigmeat sales are controlled by major retailers who understand their customer profile, so why do we need RSPCA Assured?
Understanding demand is not the same as delivering independent, consistent, higher welfare on farms.
RSPCA Assured provides something retailers cannot deliver alone – independent, sciencebased standards, robust in-house assessments and a trusted label that puts pigs’ lived experience first, every time.
We know shoppers care deeply about the welfare of farmed animals. Our research shows that 85% of UK adults think it is important that farmed animals are cared for to higher welfare standards¹, 62% would pay more for British, higherwelfare products over cheaper alternatives², and more than a third (38%) of people would go elsewhere if their usual shop didn’t have higherwelfare labelled British food options available³.
RSPCA Assured exists to make sure farmed animal welfare is never reduced to a simple commercial decision or a marketing tier. We are the only independent, not-for-profit UK farm assurance scheme solely dedicated to animal welfare, using standards developed by the RSPCA and backed by more than 200 years of expertise.

can move freely and build nests, rather than being confined at one of the most vulnerable times in their lives.

Does your organisation have any data regarding customer recognition of the RSPCA logo and meaningful knowledge of its significance?
Yes, we regularly track our brand health through an independent consumer research agency.
Our research shows that around half (46%) of people are already aware of the RSPCA Assured label. With the rollout of our new brand in October last year and a new marketing strategy in place to accelerate awareness – including a new radio campaign in March this year – we expect to see these figures continue increasing year on year.
All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. The figures are the average across four waves taken during 2025. Sample size for each wave was c.2000 adults. The surveys were carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all UK adults (aged 18+).
Is there any scope for flagging-up products from farms with elite status over and above those just giving pigs a life worth living?
Even though there is growing interest in where food comes from and how animals are reared,
higher welfare still remains an optional extra for most other assurance schemes, rather than a consistent, core requirement.
We don’t agree that animal welfare should ever be positioned as a voluntary upgrade where producers choose a level of welfare to opt into – basic, better or best. Good welfare practice is a fundamental part of responsible and compassionate food production, and it should be a consistent, credible standard.
At RSPCA Assured, higher welfare will never be an optional upgrade – it’s the foundation of everything we do. It’s built into the RSPCA standards, our assessments, and our values. The RSPCA’s science-based standards are enforced through regular, independent inspections carried out by our team of specially-trained, in-house assessors – something many other schemes don’t have.
We don’t ask producers to pick the level of welfare they are willing to provide, we ask them to commit to welfare excellence – no matter their system.
The RSPCA welfare standards ensure that animal welfare continually progresses, whereas tiered models may risk slowing progress if there’s no commitment to regularly reviewing and updating their requirements. Even well-intentioned higher welfare tiers could remain static, without the continual improvement that true welfare leadership demands.

What status does the RSPCA Assured logo enjoy within the vastly diverse EC market? RSPCA Assured is primarily a UK-based farm assurance scheme, so its strongest recognition and commercial presence is within the UK market. Within the wider European market, recognition of the RSPCA Assured logo itself is naturally lower, as it is not a pan-European certification scheme. However, the influence of the RSPCA’s welfare standards extends well beyond the UK.
The RSPCA is the world’s oldest animal welfare charity, and its science-based standards have helped shape welfare policy, assurance models and retailer commitments across the UK, Europe and globally. Countries including the Netherlands, the USA and New Zealand have created welfare assurance schemes based on, or inspired by, the RSPCA’s standards and the RSPCA Assured model.
From pioneering mandatory CCTV in slaughterhouses, to banning farrowing crates for pigs and ensuring only higher-welfare chicken breeds are used, the RSPCA has consistently led the way in defining how farmed animals should be treated. Together, the RSPCA and RSPCA Assured have blazed a trail for farmed animal welfare that many others are now following. Does the logo help develop more markets for pig products globally?
Globally, consumers and trade partners are more aware than ever of where food comes from and how it is produced. Our research shows that 85% of UK adults say it is important that farmed animals are cared for to higher welfare standards¹. Welfare is no longer a niche issue – it is part of the wider conversation about quality, provenance and responsible production.
RSPCA Assured members are well placed to meet that demand. The scheme is backed by the RSPCA’s long-standing global reputation and provides independent, science-based certification that goes beyond legal minimums. That gives producers a clear and credible story to tell in competitive export markets.
Recent trade deals, such as the removal of India’s 33% tariff on British salmon and a landmark £19 million pork export deal with Mexico, highlight the potential for growth. Salmon is already the UK’s number one food export, and with more than 90% of salmon produced under the RSPCA Assured scheme, and a huge growing market in India, this trade deal alone shows the massive potential for British producers to promote higher welfare standards abroad.
Higher-welfare farming – such as RSPCA Assured, organic and free-range – ensures animals are provided with more space, enrichment, good veterinary care and the ability to express natural behaviours. As global understanding of animal sentience grows, so too does the expectation that exporting nations demonstrate responsible production.

Is the RSPCA in close contact with the major pig organisations and feed trade groups?
Yes. The RSPCA and RSPCA Assured are in regular contact with major pig organisations, industry bodies and, where relevant, feed and supply chain groups.
When developing and reviewing the RSPCA’s pig welfare standards, the RSPCA consults with their Standards Technical Advisory Groups (STAG) for pigs. This group brings together a wide range of producers, veterinary professionals, academics and other industry representatives to ensure the RSPCAS’s standards are grounded in the latest science and practical experience, while continuing to lead progress on animal welfare.
Alongside this, our dedicated farming and technical engagement team works closely with producer groups and sector bodies across the pig industry. They provide guidance on meeting and maintaining the RSPCA’s higher welfare standards, share best practice and listen carefully to the realities farmers face on the ground.
Consumers are increasingly concerned with issues such as life cycle assessment and biological circularity. Do these changing priorities result in welfare becoming less of an issue? Whilst people are more environmentally aware and concerned than ever before, this does not – in our opinion – mean that welfare is less important.
We know that raising animals to better welfare conditions reduces on-farm mortality and medicine usage, which is better for the environment. It is important to recognise the interdependence between these issues, as an expanding scientific evidence base demonstrates how improving the welfare of all animals, including those used
to produce our food, can help achieve climate change ambitions and targets. Therefore, taking better care of animals contributes to a better environment, ensuring our work to drive welfare improvements inherently drives environmental improvements.
Our research consistently shows that people are prioritising the welfare of farmed animals:
• 62% of UK adults who buy animal products say they’d pay more for British, higher welfare products over cheaper alternatives¹.
• More than a third (38%) of people would go elsewhere if their usual shop didn’t have higherwelfare labelled British food options available².
• 85% of people say it’s important to them that farmed animals are reared to higher welfare standards³.
• 78% of UK adults who consume animal products also said they thought their shopping choices could make a positive difference to the lives of farmed animals⁴.
Over time pig buildings deteriorate and sometimes pig management practices lapse, how do your inspectors cope with those no

Our highly trained farmed animal welfare assessors, alongside our farming and technical engagement team, provide ongoing guidance and practical support. If a member is facing challenges, we are there to advise, work through solutions and help them get back on track.
Pigs on the RSPCA Assured scheme may be kept indoors and outdoors, with building specifications varying accordingly. Of course, animal welfare is our priority, so buildings must be kept in good condition and able to withstand extreme weather.
All RSPCA Assured members must successfully pass their annual certification assessment to retain their certified status. However, our approach is always supportive as well as robust. We are committed to working with producers who want to meet the RSPCA’s welfare standards, helping them progress confidently on their higher welfare journey while ensuring standards are upheld.

Campaign activity spans television, video on demand, digital media and influencer partnerships targeting families and younger consumers. Messaging highlights cost, versatility and everyday meal solutions, helping pork compete against other proteins during periods of economic pressure.
Performance is independently evaluated, measuring awareness, perception and purchase intent to ensure value for levy payers. Recent results showed pork purchase intent reached 84%, the highest on record.
Exports
Exports are vital to supporting farm gate returns. Many cuts and offal achieve higher value overseas, making international market access essential for full
carcase utilisation and overall profitability.
We work with exporters and government to secure and maintain access, provide technical expertise and promote British pork in priority regions. Activity includes trade shows, inward buyer visits, market intelligence and support with certification requirements, particularly in Asia where demand for pig meat and offal remains strategically important.

Reputation
Protecting the reputation of British pork underpins long term confidence at home and abroad.
Animal health and welfare are central to this work. We provide practical guidance, support training and facilitate evidence based discussion on
housing, welfare systems and regulatory change to ensure standards remain robust.
African Swine Fever carries particular emphasis. It remains a major global threat to pig production and an outbreak in the UK would have severe economic consequences. We work with government, vets and industry partners to strengthen biosecurity awareness, deliver contingency planning workshops and provide tools to support preparedness. The Muck Off campaign, reinforcing the importance of thorough vehicle cleaning, is one example.
Environmental compliance and responsible production also sit within reputation, with guidance helping producers meet regulatory requirements and demonstrate high standards.
Training and Education
Stockperson Plus has been reintroduced as an advanced online programme covering water management, casualty pigs and assurance schemes, building on the Stockperson Development Scheme to strengthen technical competence.
The UK Pig Industry Welfare Training platform, developed with industry partners, ensures consistent welfare standards and is required under Red Tractor.
We also work with LEAF Education to fund training for farmers delivering accredited farm visits, helping educate young people about pork production and British farming. In addition, our initiative providing free ingredients to schools for hands on cooking lessons has engaged thousands of students, supporting practical skills, confidence and understanding of healthy eating.

Red Tractor awareness increases following anniversary campaign
Three quarters of UK adults now recognise the Red Tractor logo, according to new consumer research. YouGov tracking data shows awareness of Red Tractor is at 75% – a 3% increase since January 2025 – putting the scheme marginally ahead of the Lion Mark for eggs at 72% for the first time.
Growing awareness and visibility Director of Marketing and Commercial at Red Tractor, Richard Cattell, attributes the growing awareness to both the breadth of the scheme, visibility of the logo on packs and the impact of the ‘With you for 25 years’ consumer campaign, which launched in August and is set to reach 46.9 million people by March 2026.
“Red Tractor and other farm assurance schemes play an important role in helping shoppers make informed choices,” says Mr Cattell.
“For over 25 years the Red Tractor logo has been a symbol of safe, traceable and responsibly produced food, underpinned by the efforts of
food but helps to remind consumers why the scheme is trusted by every major UK supermarket,” he adds.

“With ongoing questions about the clarity and value of food labelling, achieving this level of consumer recognition demonstrates that consistent, trusted marks can establish themselves in shoppers’ minds.”
