Horseracing...
Explore a town that has a rich history and heritage and enjoys close ties to the history of the Royal family.
Newmarket has long been revered as the “Home of Horseracing” but also has roots that date back to 1200AD. The famous Devil’s Dyke that runs between both of Newmarket’s racecourses has been traced back to the time of Queen Boudicca who led a major rebellion against the Romans.
It was King James I who first identified Newmarket as a great location to pursue his sporting interests and the town’s link to horseracing was cemented by King Charles II in 1666.
The Rowley Mile is the oldest of the two racecourses in Newmarket and is named after Charles II favourite stallion Old Rowley. Rowley also became a nickname for the king himself. Although actually
longer than a mile (the straight alone is one mile, two furlongs), it’s been raced on since the 17th century. The wide nature of the track means it’s able to host races such as the Cambridgeshire Handicap and the Cesarewitch Handicap, which both have a maximum field size of 35.
There’s no finer place to enjoy the excitement and sheer beauty of a day at the races than Newmarket, the ancestral home of racing. Racing opens at The Rowley Mile Racecourse in April and finishes in October although during the summer months, all race meeting moves to the picturesque July Racecourse.
From the oldest race in history to the 21st Century, Newmarket hosts some of the world’s top thoroughbred racing at the Rowley Mile, including the Guineas Festival in May and the Future Champions’ Day in October...
The July Course has a unique charm and romantic appeal that makes it many people’s favourite racecourse. It’s where passion and fashion meet sizzling sport to create an exhilarating atmosphere. There’s so much to embrace and enjoy at this magical sporting venue. Everyone makes that little bit of an extra effort when they come to the July Course – not least the trainers with their linen suits... and the leading lady jockeys blazing a style trail.
With highlights such as the July Festival, Newmarket Nights and Summer Saturdays, there’s so much to enjoy.
In fact, there is a third course, the Round Course, which is only used once a year for the historic amateur race, the Newmarket Town Plate, the prize for which is a box of Newmarket sausages.
Reach parts of the racecourse other punters cannot reach On a Discover Newmarket’s Race Day Tour, guests can visit areas usually closed to the public, including the Commentary Box, Weighing Room, Parade Ring and Royal Box.

Newmarket is blessed with a vibrant town centre with a mix of independents that will make your shopping experience extra special. Whether you’re looking for something to wear for a day at the races, a home accessory, or just a souvenir to remember your visit, our High Street offers something for everyone.
The High Street is topped and tailed by the famed Gallops of Warren Hill at one end and the Rowley Mile and July Racecourses at the other, making two fantastic gateways into the town. With its rich history and heritage, the town has some impressive buildings displaying some wonderful architecture which provides the perfect backdrop for a day’s shopping.
On Tuesdays and Saturdays, the Market Square hosts a lively market with a variety of stalls selling a range of goods. Along
with the usual traditional wares, there are craft stalls along with some wonderful food offerings and look out for the monthly Makers Markets and seasonal themed events.

National Horseracing Museum...
Open Tuesday to Sunday, plus Bank Holiday Mondays throughout the year, the National Horseracing Museum is a must visit for all ages!
Spanning a five-acre site (which includes King Charles II Palace and Royal Stables) spend the day learning more about the history and heritage of British racehorsing through a series of interactive exhibitions, immersive galleries and displays. You will also have the unique opportunity to meet and interact with the museum’s resident ex-racehorses and the mini-Shetlands: Harry and Kizzy.
It’s so much more than a museum! Hosting an extensive programme of impressive exhibitions, along with a varied programme of events, creative family activities and masterclasses, the museum has something for everyone all year round.
Newmarket residents can purchase an annual ticket for just £10 and visit as many times as they like for a whole year, plus children go free. Not forgetting the two wonderful on-site refreshment outlets, The Tack Room, and Tack Box as well as the Gift Shop and adjourning Second Handbook Shop, all of which are accessible without a museum ticket.

Tucked away in the heart of Newmarket, Kings Theatre has a story that’s just as captivating as the shows it hosts. It’s more than just a theatre, it’s a piece of the town’s soul, blending history, creativity, and a whole lot of community spirit.
Built around 1850, the theatre was originally a school. When the school closed in 1939 the building became the Fitzroy Tea Rooms until 1945, and (following the war) became a meeting place for various local groups. In 1954, the building was bought by Captain Herbert Ryder King for the sum of £2,000, renamed Kings Hall and Captain King set about creating the theatre you see today. Captain King was President of a local theatre group the Nomads (Newmarket Operatic, Musical & Dramatic Society) and they held their first public show at the new venue in February 1955.
When Captain King died in 1971, he bequeathed the theatre to the Nomads and in 1972, it was re-named Kings Theatre in honour of his generous donation and remains their property in trust.
Over the years, as tastes and technology evolved, so did the theatre, moving from film screenings to live performances, concerts, and community events.
The story of Kings Theatre...
By the late 20th century (like many smalltown theatres), Kings faced its share of struggles. But the people of Newmarket were not about to let a beloved landmark fade away. Thanks to passionate locals, dedicated volunteers, and a wave of community fundraising efforts, the theatre was restored and re-imagined, keeping its vintage charm while adding modern touches.
In April 2024, Kings Cinema was launched. This is housed within the theatre and delivers a quality and much-needed cinema to Newmarket.
Today, Kings Theatre is a buzzing cultural hub. Whether it’s a local play, a touring comedy act, a live music night or cinema screening there’s always something happening. It’s not just about what’s on stage either, the theatre’s become a space where creativity thrives, and people come together, whether they’re performers, crew members, or enthusiastic audience members.
