ello and welcome to the latest edition of our magazine. September heralds the launch of our Early Bird tickets for next year’s National at Statfold Country Park. If you were able to join us this year you will already be aware of how much this site has to offer and next year your ticket includes free entry to all the attractions every day, you only have to pay for the thrill of a fairground ride or the roller disco. We have also organised entertainment in the afternoons as well as booking some excellent bands for the evenings. And of course, all our favourite traditional activities will be on the programme. There is an optional visit to Twycross Zoo on the Friday which you will need to book through our Head Office, and the shuttle bus to Tamworth will be available for free on Saturday (but remember you need to get a ticket). What about the AGM I hear you ask? Well, that is moved to Saturday morning and the shuttle 16

buses will run after the AGM finishes. Running alongside our event, on the Sunday, Statfold is hosting a Classic Car Show so for the price of an entry ticket you can enjoy a wander round the old classics! With so much to see and do, as well as the chance to meet up with friends, the Early Bird ticket of 5 nights for the price of 4 is a really good offer – but note, it will end on the 31st December 2026. September also means that our annual round of Group AGMs will be starting and I hope you will all support your Group Committee by attending your Group’s Rally; it’s a really good way to show your appreciation for the work they have done over the past year, and your ‘thank you’ means so much. If you can offer some of your time, experience and expertise by standing for election to your Committee please do speak to your Group Chairman or Secretary. Finally, I would like to thank all those members who have introduced
new members to our Club. The Exhibition Stand at Warners Show continues to work hard on our behalf, and Teresa and Peter have run a stand at three other shows – thank you. But on top of their work, we are welcoming new members that have been introduced to the Club by you, and what better recommendation could they have? And do not forget, for every new member you introduce you will receive a voucher from Head Office, so, keep up the good work and continue spreading the word about our fantastic Club. Wishing you all happy rallying,
Sue

JIM HARRIS It is with great sadness and regret that East Wessex has to announce the loss of a longstanding and respected member, Jim Harris. Jim sadly passed away on the night of the 30th July 2026. Jim joined the club in November of 2005 and along with his beloved wife, Anne, rallied with East Wessex and other groups. On her passing in 2018 he continued to rally with us on his own until late 2025, missing very few meets. He had covered many functions within the group, ranging from committee member to national rally prop creator, and many other things practical. He could always be found on the rally field with his trusty dog, Bonnie, who loved all the attention given to her, and he was always the first to offer help and guidance to new ralliers and first time rally hosts alike. He will always be remembered by members for his hearty laugh, treating us with stories about his past antics and wicked sense of humour, especially at the evening continued on p8

BRISTOL INTERNATIONAL BALLOON FESTIVAL Photographs by Bob & Sue Moore
N
o need to book, so we arrived at the site on Wednesday afternoon in Long Ashford, expecting to be among the first to seek a pitch to watch the Bristol International Balloon Festival. We were wrong! There were at least 100 units from the MCC already pitched up. The MCC’s ‘parking attendants’ were super efficient guiding us to our pitch, carefully making sure there was a distance of 6m between vans. A day later and the number of vans, I estimate, was over 200, and all MCC members. We were there
not only to see the spectacular sight of balloons rising in the early hours and again in the evening, but to photograph the event. We were not disappointed. The balloon take off area in the park was packed, with a massive amount of people vying to see the balloons climb into the sky, even at 5.30am. It was easier to get out of bed at around 6am on site or wait in bed until we could hear the balloon burners overhead. Problem was if the wind decided to take the them in a different direction we were stymied – that happened on Saturday morning. The Saturday evening take off seemed to attract

the whole population of Bristol, it was rammed. Better to stay on site and take photographs. Every conceivable shape of hot air balloons was there – propelled by noisy gas bottles – including animals, a suitcase, a scarecrow, a dragon, aliens and a screwdriver. One had even flown in from the USA – presumably in the hold of an aircraft. The meet was exceptionally well organised by the MCC and the weather was perfect to take images against the blue sky of Somerset. Photo equipment: Nikon F6 & a F6II. 24-120mm and 75-300mm lenses. NEW MODEL NEWS
All change for 2027. Very much a European vibe to the large display of new models.
Elddis goes European
Gentleman Jack has the inside track...
M
otor Caravanner Magazine felt privileged to be invited to the Elddis 2027 model launch and to hear future plans for the marque. For some time Elddis
has been part of the (based in Germany but pan-European) Erwin Hymer Group, themselves owned by the mighty Thor Industries of America. Earlier in the year I wrote
The Elddis Experience Centre will be based in Consett, County Durham. It will be dedicated to providing the best customer service. 16 MOTOR CARAVANNER September 2026
about the sun setting on Elddis motorcaravan production in Consett, Co Durham. Upsetting news for anyone who might have lost their job as a result, but also disturbing for the Bancrofts. I’ve been visiting their Delves Lane complex for decades and our family has owned and enjoyed using Elddis caravans and motorhomes since the 1960’s. In future, all Elddis high-top motorcaravans will be built in Nowa Sól, Poland and coachbuilt motorcaravans will emerge from Isny in Germany. However, all is not lost for Consett as an exciting new project has been announced. Consett will be home to ‘The Elddis Experience Centre’. It is envisaged that this will become the nerve
centre of providing Elddis owners with the best possible customer experience. Time will tell but there was no disputing their impressive ambition and enthusiasm for the project evident at the new model launch. EHG reported that improvements in customer service have already taken place, citing that Elddis is the ‘Best-in-Class’ at NCC compliance and that the Trustpilot reviews of Consett staff have risen to 4.3/5.0. Both noteworthy achievements. Elddis commented that ‘...maintaining the Elddis Brand Heritage was critical to our strategy’. Under ‘Look and Feel’ of the new ranges, the following appeared, ‘Bold but traditional British design, German Engineering. Mature comfortable and technical.’ Coachbuilts Firstly, the names. Prior to the production relocation, the Autoquest range (previously VFM’s offering for five decades) was promoted to the flagship range. Formerly this was called Encore and, briefly, Avalon and Buccaneer. Whirlwind fills the resulting gap, offering some incredibly competitively-priced products. Whirlwind coachbuilt models will be based on the 140bhp manual transmission Peugeot Boxer. Autoquest coachbuilts will favour the 140bhp manual transmission Fiat Ducato. See accompanying table for base vehicle options. The new Whirlwind and Autoquest layout both number five, four with permanent high-level single beds over a rear garage, one with a permanent high-level peninsula double-bed. Gone are the Brit friendly compact Accordos, also the 115, 150/250,175/275, and 185/285, all of which had easily accessible beds not requiring steps, which is crucial for many club members. Another absentee was an Elddis industry-first... old-away travel seats under inward-facing settees. >>

NEW MODEL NEWS
High-top motorcaravans Two ranges, again monikered Whirlwind (value) and Autoquest (prestige). Whirlwind has two models with permanent transverse beds at the rear (overall vehicle lengths: 5.4m and 6.0m, and one with a longitudinal double-bed in a 6.3m van). The Autoquest offer is larger with five variants. 554 (5.4m) and 560 (6.0m) have transverse doublebeds at the rear. 260 (6.0m) has twin rear settees that convert into two single beds or an all over double-bed. 460 (also 6.0m) has a similar rear lounge, albeit with shorter settees. These are augmented by a forward half-dinette featuring two additional travel seats. 563 (the biggie at 6.36m) has convertible longitudinal double/two single beds at the rear and a forward half-dinette. Production Whirlwind high-top models will be based on the 140bhp manual Peugeot Boxer, apart from the Whirlwind GTV 554 which will arrive with automatic transmission and, apparently, there will not be a manual alternative. All Autoquest high-tops will feature the 140bhp Fiat Ducato with automatic transmission as standard. Author’s opinion Those exhibited were not handed for the UK, thus the habitation door was on ‘our’ offside. EHG should

re-consider this decision, especially regarding PVCs that are more likely to be used as an ‘only vehicle’. The Million-Dollar question is: ‘Will duplicating popular European layouts already offered in the UK via other EHG marques, plus the withdrawal of so many previous Elddis fave floorplans, go down well with prospective purchasers and fulfil EHG’s stated aim of being the Number 1 RV brand in the UK?’ In particular one wonders about serial Elddis adherents such as

members of the owner clubs, within which there is usually fantastic brand loyalty. In addition, some decisions reached appear to me to be at odds with EHG’s statement that was emphasised at the launch....’Maintaining the Elddis Brand Heritage was critical to our strategy.’ To be fair though, these newbies play exceptionally-well in previous Elddis’s stongest suits - a decent payload on a 3,500kg chassis and VFM. Those prices are so sharp, I nearly cut myself!
NEW MODEL NEWS | PART 2
Coachman is still on-the-up S
ome of us will remember as if it was yesterday, an upstart company called Coachman ‘up’ in Humberside, upending the market with their all-new trailer caravans. It was back in 1986, and it doesn’t seem 40 years ago, but it undeniably is. The trade has experienced many ‘ups’ and downs’ over the intervening years and Coachman has weathered them well. As enthusiasts of caravans
equipped with a steering wheel, we were thrilled when Coachman announced that they were (in collaboration with ‘premier-league’ Swedish manufacturer Kabe) launching a range of coachbuilt motorcaravans. The original Merc Sprinter-based Travel Master was an instant success. It was followed by other Mercs and the Fiat Ducato underpinned Avventura range. There’s more to follow on coachbuilts, but first...
HIGH-TOPS ...meet the all-new Coachman Veloce, not one but two high-top PVC’s based on the Fiat Ducato. Although converted over the water, they are ‘handed’ for the UK with the side sliding door on the UK nearside. We haven’t yet got final dimensions, payloads and prices but the launch two will be at 3,500kg. VR65 has a permanent transverse double-bed at the rear, whereas VL65 has a rear lounge. >>
A brace of Veloce Fiat Ducato-based PVC’s was unveiled. Both variants will be finished in Expedition Grey coachwork and have the 140bhp automatic transmission power train. 20 MOTOR CARAVANNER September 2026

VR65’s bed (below) although ‘permanent’ can be lifted (power assisted) out of the way and stored adjacent to the ceiling (or just further from the floor) to accommodate long loads, or perhaps a jet ski/mobility scooter/whatever.
Also confirmed is that the Fiat Ducato base will enjoy a high standard specification including
automatic transmission and many driver-assist systems. Conversion is similarly well-equipped with a

Add in an underslung gas tank, solar panel, TV with Freely, Wi-Fi Router, and Aguti travel seats in the forward halfdinette (along with so much more) and it is immediately apparent that these are going to appeal to discerning and experienced motorcaravanners. COACHBUILTS All now arrive with a Lithium leisure battery and an upgraded charging system. THE GOOD, W THE BAD & THE UGLY Frances and Michael Howorth reveal the real pitfalls of bespoke campervan conversions – and suggest ways on how to avoid them. 26 MOTOR CARAVANNER September 2026
ho amongst us has not stood beside an empty panel van and imagined the possibilities? We certainly did. Looking into the cavernous shell of what would eventually become our own campervan, we saw not bare metal but opportunity. A comfortable fixed bed. Storage underneath where we needed it. A practical galley, with enough solar power for us to stay off grid for days. A van designed around the way we actually travel, rather than compromises that someone else had made. That is the greatest attraction of a bespoke campervan conversion. Instead of buying someone else’s dream, you are creating your own.
CONVERSIONS & MODIFICATIONS But, after years of writing about motorhomes, talking to converters, meeting owners and following countless online forums, we’ve discovered that the journey from empty box to perfect campervan is rarely straightforward. Researching for this feature, we spent time browsing Facebook groups and owners’ forums and found tales of disappearing builders, overweight vans, electrical nightmares and interiors destroyed by leaks. Yet we also discovered some remarkable success stories where careful planning had produced campervans that owners still love years later. But for every story of a beautifully executed conversion, we found another that became an expensive lesson in what not to do. Welcome to the good, the bad and the downright ugly side of campervan conversions.
The ugly – the bargain that cost twice as much
Everyone loves a bargain and Dave thought he had found one. A local van builder offered to convert his Fiat Ducato for almost £20,000 less than several other established companies. The photographs looked excellent. The workshop seemed busy. The promises sounded convincing and Dave coughed up when stage payments became due. After the third payment, the excuses began. First, it was ‘parts supply problems’ then ‘staff illness’ followed by a ‘family emergency’, then nothing. When Dave finally tracked down the workshop, he found it closed. His partially stripped van sat outside exposed to the weather. Recovering his dream machine involved solicitors, recovery vehicles and months of frustration. Completing the project ultimately cost him far more than using a reputable converter would have done in the first place. The lesson is painfully simple. If one quotation sits dramatically below every other estimate, ask yourself why. >> September 2026 MOTOR CARAVANNER 27
CONVERSIONS & MODIFICATIONS Professional and qualified converters have high overheads, they carry insurance, employ experienced tradespeople, invest in specialist equipment and comply with gas and electrical regulations. Equally importantly, successful converters remain around when something needs adjusting or tweaking.
TYPICAL CONVERSION COSTS Most budgets unravel for surprisingly familiar reasons. Owners change layouts halfway through. They buy cheap equipment before replacing it with better products. Electrical requirements grow beyond the original design. Accessories appear before the layout finishes. Small items such as wiring, sealants, fixings and adhesives quietly absorb hundreds of pounds. Many owners later upgrade batteries because they underestimated their electrical needs. Every experienced converter we spoke to offered similar advice. Add at least 10 to 20 per cent to your planned budget. You will probably need it.
The bad – weight? What weight?
Self builds can be equally unsuccessful. One enthusiastic DIY builder we learned of wanted the ultimate luxury camper. Having installed twin leisure batteries, he added granite worktops, and a domestic refrigerator in the galley area and a cast-iron wood burner in the lounge section. The finished van looked magnificent. Then he visited his local public weighbridge only to find his pride and joy exceeded its Maximum Authorised Mass by almost 400kg. Removing his beautifully crafted furniture became his only realistic solution, and for him, that was heartbreaking. Clearly, weight planning begins long before the first piece of plywood is cut. Every kilogram matters, because everything adds weight. Solar panels, Lithium batteries, bike racks, full water tanks, Passengers and even the dog, all add weight. Individually they seem insignificant, together they can turn a road legal campervan into an illegal overloaded one.

Death by damp
One couple spent two years creating what friends described as a showroom-quality conversion. Their cabinetry was superb. The upholstery looked professionally finished. The lighting transformed the interior. Unfortunately, they had not sealed in one of their
hatches correctly and water entered gradually. Nobody noticed until cupboards developed a musty smell. When the furniture finally came out, widespread rot lay hidden behind it, meaning that much of the interior had to be rebuilt. Thousands of pounds disappeared because of one poorly sealed fitting. If there is one message we heard more than most during this research, it is to never rush sealing rooflights, vents, solar panel brackets or aerials.
Gas and electricity
Electrical systems are another area where false economies have proved disastrous. Forum discussions regularly tell remarkably similar stories about inexpensive batteries, chargers or inverters from unknown internet suppliers. Some perform adequately while others overheat. Others fail spectacularly. >> 28 MOTOR CARAVANNER September 2026

CONVERSIONS & MODIFICATIONS One owner we spoke too lost his entire camper after an electrical fire traced back to poorly installed battery cables. Good-quality electrical equipment costs more for a reason. Professional installation costs even more. However, both provide something impossible to price accurately until something goes wrong. And for us that peace of mind is a price worth paying for. Not every problem appears immediately. One owner who contacted us, told us of a selfbuilt campervan advertised as professionally completed. He bought it, used it for a season, and then during a routine habitation inspection, the engineer discovered a flexible gas hose routed through sharp-edged metal panels without protection. The installation failed instantly and subsequently the entire gas system had to be replaced before the van could be used safely.
CONFESSIONS OF A CONVERTER During our research, several comments stayed with us. These included: “I wish I’d hired three different campervans before drawing my own layout.”
Rust never sleeps
We learned of another van, converted by a well-known brand in Europe, that had drilled mounting holes passing through the floor without sealing the exposed steel. Three winters later, corrosion had spread beneath the flooring into structural members. The damage had remained hidden until extensive and expensive repairs became unavoidable.
“I spent £3,000 making the van beautiful and forgot where the water pump was.” “The best money I spent wasn’t on solar panels. It was paying an auto electrician to check my wiring.” “I thought I’d save money doing everything myself. Professionals eventually rebuilt half of it.”
Now for the good news
Fortunately, not every conversion becomes a cautionary tale. We heard from a great number of satisfied customers who had bought conversions from both eminent and not so well-known converting companies. We also heard from a retired engineer who had spent almost a year researching layouts before buying a single sheet of plywood. He consulted electrical specialists before tackling the wiring and left gas installation to qualified engineers and regularly took his van to the weighbridge during the

30 MOTOR CARAVANNER September 2026
Plan first. Build later
Perhaps our favourite happy story came from Mark and Helen. They spent almost twelve months planning before placing an order. They hired several different campervans, attended the NEC Motorhome and Caravan Show. They measured existing layouts and consulted fellow MCC members. Only when they knew what they wanted did they proceed with their purchase. Three years of use later and they have made hardly any alterations, proving that planning costs almost nothing, while rebuilding a finished van costs a fortune.
Build around your lifestyle
Another owner, who employed a small bespoke converter, told us he based every decision around the two electric bicycles he wanted to carry. Rather than forcing the bikes into leftover space, he and the builder designed the entire campervan around the bikes. The position of the shower moved, and the galley became slightly smaller so that the rear garage was the size he needed for the bikes which he then mounted on sliders that pulled out of the back doors. Everything reflected the way he actually travelled. That is exactly how good design works. Our advice is to design your van around >>

CONVERSIONS & MODIFICATIONS your lifestyle, not someone else’s YouTube tour. Not every successful DIY conversion means doing absolutely everything yourself. One couple we met told us how they completed insulation, flooring and cabinetry themselves while employing specialists for gas, diesel heating and electrical installation. They saved thousands in labour while ensuring critical safety systems met recognised standards. Knowing your limitations is often one of the smartest skills any converter can possess.
The biggest mistakes
After speaking with converters across Britain, the same themes emerge repeatedly. • People buy the wrong van before deciding how they intend to travel. • Others forget payload until it is too late.
• Many install every gadget available simply because they can. • Fashion frequently triumphs over practicality. • White interiors show dirt. • Heavy construction reduces payload. • Black taps reveal every water mark. • Condensation receives far less attention than heating, despite causing more damage over time. If this proves anything at all, it is perhaps that sometimes; the simplest solution proves the best. Several experienced converters told us that customers consistently underestimate the same issues. These included: • Realistic budgets. • Lead times. • Vehicle weights. • Access for future servicing. • After-sales support. One converter summed it up
saying, “People spend months choosing cupboard colours but only minutes thinking about how they’ll reach the water pump five years later.” We suspect he has a point.
Why your van may never become a motor caravan
One issue surprises many first-time builders. Completing a campervan conversion no longer guarantees DVLA will reclassify the vehicle as a motor caravan. Today, external appearance carries far greater importance than many people realise. Stealth conversions often resemble ordinary delivery vans. Even with beds, kitchens, heating and water systems installed, they may remain registered as a panel van, van with windows or light goods vehicle. That does not make the conversion illegal. However, vehicle >>

classification can affect insurance, taxation, speed limits and even some ferry bookings. So, it is worth understanding those implications before starting any build.
Our verdict
When we had our own campervan built, we quickly discovered there is no such thing as the perfect
conversion. There is only the conversion that works perfectly for the way you want to use the van. The best campervans rarely contain the most gadgets. Instead, they reflect thoughtful planning, sensible compromises and an honest understanding of what their owners actually need. The worst conversions usually begin with optimism and end with
expensive repairs because someone rushed the planning, ignored the detail or believed cutting corners would save money. Every memorable campervan starts life as an empty van and an exciting idea. Whether you build it yourself, work alongside specialists or commission a professional converter, one principle never changes: Build it once. Build it properly. Do that and your campervan will spend its life exploring Britain’s roads instead of sitting in a workshop waiting for someone to put right mistakes that could have been avoided. Authors note: Frances and Michael Howorth are grateful to all those club members, forum users and converters who helped with this research and have, as was agreed, changed or removed names, to protect anonymity.

CHILTERN ANGLIA Thirty-four vans turned up at Sheringham for our summer rally. The tea/coffee urns were on each evening. Friday night Steve did a history/East Anglia quiz which tested everyone’s brain cells and got us all thinking. Saturday was a free day (as was each daytime) to explore the area and town. Many members took advantage of the excellent seafood that was available in most restaurants. Saturday night we danced to the Laurie Hayley Duo – two guys who are fantastic at playing the electric guitars. Sunday night was bingo night with some members lucky enough to win twice. This was followed by the raffle with five members sitting on the Anglia chairs of shame. Monday night we were back in the hall to listen to a lady called Rikki, a rock singer who entertained us with rock songs from the 70s & 80s. What a powerful voice she has. She even managed to change her voice to sound just like the artist whose song she was singing. For those of you that were not there you missed a great lady. If ever you are in Norfolk or Suffolk look out for her as she is brilliant. Tuesday night was a chilled relaxing evening with everyone enjoying the evening sunset and sitting outside chatting to friends. Thank you to Steve and Pat for helping the committee run the rally. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, the Narborough rally on 15th October has been cancelled. If you have not yet paid for your Christmas or New Year rally, please can you do so at your next rally. All payments are due by the end of October. We are now able to take these payments via the card machine at a rally or bacs payment straight to our bank account. Please see Keith B for bank details. Upcoming rallies: 3-6 September at Dereham Hockey Club, NR20 3TT. Start time 1pm. Not bookable.
Stoke Bruerne – Thank you Anne for the following write up. This was a four-day rally hosted by Viv and Peter, who did an excellent job. Most of us arrived in glorious sunshine on Thursday, the canal was explored by most of us during the day, ice cream and cold pints enjoyed in the Boat Inn. Friday, another beautiful day, our hosts organised a knockout competition of a very different game of skittles that is distinctive to this part of Northamptonshire, Lynn being the winner; great fun. In the evening our brains were tested with quizzes and again much laughter. Our third day, Friday, had lots of us going back to the canal to complete the Treasure Hunt, explore and learn more about the history. Much food, ice cream and cold drinks enjoyed by all. More brain teasers and laughter in the evening. Saturday and more of the same during the day and evening we had results of the Treasure Hunt, won by Shirley and Pete. More brain teasers and the raffle. Thank you to our hosts for the most memorable of rallies. >> Chiltern Group

GROUP NEWS West Oxon Steam Show – Thank you to Roy for the following write up. The rally at West Oxon Steam and Vintage Show, near Witney, was held between the 16-20 July and attended by 14 vans, 12 Chiltern and two visitors. Our rally was a rally within a rally with all the hard work done by the organisers of the main event. The event field was huge and unfortunately due to the extreme heat and dry weather, the ground was hard and cracked. This meant that walking required care, however this did not stop people from enjoying the many stalls and exhibits. The beer tent also proved to be a popular destination. For those who wished we met up in the shelters in the evenings, whilst others suffered the joy/pain of watching the football world cup. A great relaxing rally. Upcoming rallies: 1-6 September at South Lytchett Manor, BH16 6JB. Booking required. 6-11 September at Bagwell Farm, Weymouth DT3 4EA. Booking required. 11-14 September at Farnham Sea Cadets, GU9 9LQ.
EAST MIDLANDS A number of East Midlands members joined the Motorcycle Group at their invitation to their Chatsworth House Rally where they were all made very welcome at this lovely venue. The East Midlands made its annual visit to the Rempstone Steam Rally, where Anne and Paul, together with Sherry and John, did an excellent job stewarding a superb weekend. A fantastic turnout of 50 motorhomes enjoyed glorious sunshine from Thursday through to Monday. Visitors travelled from across the club, with 24 East Midlands vans joined by nine from Anglia, six from Yorkshire, four from Northern Counties, and single vans from Lancashire, West Wessex, Sussex, Severn Valley, Nene Valley, Chiltern and NWM&NW. The weather couldn’t have been kinder, allowing everyone to make the most of the outstanding steam rally. As always, there was plenty to see, with magnificent steam engines, vintage vehicles, trade stands, craft displays and

arena attractions keeping members entertained throughout the weekend. An added bonus this year was England’s match against Norway being shown on the big screen, giving football fans the opportunity to cheer on England’s win together, and adding to the excellent atmosphere around the rally field. With superb weather, great company and another outstanding Rempstone Steam Rally, it was a thoroughly enjoyable weekend and one that members will undoubtedly be looking forward to returning to next year. The East Midlands returned to the ever-popular Bakewell for another enjoyable rally, expertly stewarded by Paul and Anne Greenfield together with Sherrylee and John Burley. An excellent 63 motorhomes attended, comprising 49 East Midlands, five Anglia, three NWM&NW, two Lancashire, and one each from Northern Counties, Nene Valley, and Yorkshire. It was great to welcome so many visitors from around the country. Friday evening began with a fun picture quiz followed by bingo, expertly called by Pete Clayton, giving everyone the opportunity to catch up with friends. Saturday was a free day to enjoy everything Bakewell has to offer, with many members exploring the town, visiting the shops and enjoying the riverside walks in glorious sunshine. Sunday’s coffee morning was opened by our Chairman, Sandra, before the raffle was drawn. Congratulations to Jean Cresswell, who won the picture quiz. Although the weather became more mixed with sunshine, cloud and a few showers, it certainly didn’t spoil the friendly atmosphere. Monday was market day, giving members another chance to explore the bustling town. The evening’s quiz and card bingo provided plenty of laughs and a relaxing finale to the rally. Tuesday morning came all too soon as members packed up, exchanged farewells and wished one another safe journeys home. Thanks go to stewards Paul and Anne Greenfield and Sherrylee and John Burley for all their hard work, and to Pete Clayton for once again doing an excellent job calling the bingo.

EAST WESSEX We were lucky this month in the fact we had two rallies in July which both had amazing weather. The first rally was a new venue, which was on the edge of the New forest at Fordingbridge and did not disappoint! We totalled 15 units and included members from West Wessex, Nene Valley and Sussex. Friday eve as always catching up time with lots of laughs and banter. Saturday was another very warm day and members took the opportunity to take a walk into Fordingbridge and into Salisbury for the day on the bus no doubt to sample the pubs and coffee shops in both towns! Evening rolled in and we were treated to Dave’s’ London quiz, and the obligatory card bingo along with Larry and Sheila’s Chinese Raffle and a cracking sunset from the field! Sunday was yet another very warm day, most went out for lunch in the town, a spur of the moment decision was made and hey presto a cream tea appeared late in the afternoon. Thanks go to Heather, Sheila and Larry here, and it quickly disappeared! The evening shenanigans took the form of indoor boules, which was won by Karen P, more card bingo, and an animal quiz and our main raffle. Monday’s weather was much the same, very warm! And in comparison was a very easy day with lots more chat and of course cups of tea etc we were again treated to another beautiful sunset which really sealed off the weekend. Our second outing was to Harting for two nights, it was another warm weekend but had a welcome breeze at times. We had 11 vans with us this time, including one from Sussex. Friday saw the normal gathering but this time we were able to sit outside for best part of the evening. Dave handed out part one of a quiz on stores and establishments that are on or have been on the high street (part two given out on Sat eve). Saturday saw folks drift into the village for coffees and a walk around the village, church and lakes and one brave soul even walked up onto the south downs way! Late afternoon we had a Sausage Sizzle, Harting style! This was the first one for a long time and went down really well with everyone. The rest of the evening was taken up with another of Pete’s music quiz which always goes down well, and card bingo. Sunday was pack up day and chit chat then home till the next time. Thanks go to all, the cooks, Dave, Peter, Nigel, Larry and Sheila for the salad and all the members for helping to make this weekend a success. Upcoming rallies: 27 August-1 September at Abingdon Vale Cricket Club OX14 3HP. 1pm start. 18-20 September at Ringwood Junior School BH24 1NH. 6pm start. For the Ringwood Carnival.
Essex Group
ESSEX Another lovely weekend at Clare Priory in Sudbury. We were fortunate to have some lovely weather. We were joined by visitors from Anglia and some new Essex Group members. Friday evening we met up for raffle, a few bevvies and a chat. Great fun was had with the ‘guess what’s on the tray’ game! That tested the grey cells! Saturday we all wandered into Clare via the beautiful Priory grounds. The market was on this weekend with a lovely variety of produce, including fudge, Indian snacks, clothes and artisan preserves and spirits. Had a game of bingo in the evening and an anagram quiz. Thank you to Anne for organising the raffle, Sharon What a wonderful three-day rally at Riverside Holiday Park, run by the committee. A great turn out, as well as three vans from Anglia and one van from Kent. This is a beautiful place to stay and is so peaceful with excellent facilities and a small shop. There’s swans and ducks to keep you company too. Many arrived at 12 noon and once set up pulled up a chair to relax in the very warm sunshine. During the afternoon we set up two marquees which led into a good evening of bingo and raffle. Saturday most people walked along the sea wall to the Wardrooms bar and restaurant which serves great food, along with lovely views. After a lazy afternoon the evening led into various games, quizzes and plenty of music, as well as drawing the raffle with lots of great prizes organised by Donna and Brian. Sunday again most walked out for breakfast/lunches and later we played Sharon’s guess what’s in the sock game, as well as a music quiz. Monday we all said our goodbyes and headed off home. Sue Upcoming rallies: 11-13 September at Hook Farm, Mundon Road, CM9 6PN. Start time: 12 noon. 25-27 >> September 2026 MOTOR CARAVANNER 41

KENT We had a superb attendance for our Headcorn rally of 41 vans, this being a record attendance for a long time! We had 30 units from Kent, seven from Sussex, one from Anglia, one from Nene Valley and one from Chiltern; four units were first time ralliers! Throughout the weekend we were entertained by the various planes and parachutists, but the star of the show was hearing the inimitable sound of the merlin engine as the Spitfire took to the air. We thank Brian for his Name That Tune quiz on Saturday night although I am not sure if anyone, including Brian, knew what answer went with what tune…it really was a hilarious night for some but for other real quizzers a bit perplexing! Saturday was rounded off, for several ardent fans, by seeing England win in the football, although it was touch and go as the power was lost just as a penalty was being disputed and we all squashed into Jarvis’ van to see the last few minutes! Our second rally in July saw us at Slough Fort, All Hallows beside the Thames estuary. The weather was hot but we were kept chilled by the breeze, which at times was quite blowy, coming across from the estuary. Many of us frequented the Wetherspoons on the adjacent Haven site and others took a lovely walk along the estuary. Friday evening, we gathered under the event shelters for Dave’s quiz and on Saturday we had an afternoon of games comprising of axe throwing, golf ladder and archery all washed down with Angie and Tracey’s Pimms! New member Michael was the overall winner with Gill coming first for the ladies. As the sun set over the estuary we all gathered to play a few rounds of the colour quiz hosted by Lorna. Many thanks to the Lincolns and Thorpes for doing a sterling job hosting! Our AGM will take place at Sandwich on Saturday 3rd October at 11am and we are looking for new people to come forward to join the committee. It would be good to get some new faces to bring fresh ideas into how we can make your rallies the best that they can be! If you are willing to stand then please do let any committee member know. Upcoming rallies: 11-13 September at Hole Park, Benenden Road, Cranbrook, TN17 4JA. Walking distance to Rolvenden with its public houses and small Morgan Motor Museum. In the evening join your hosts around the campfire for a sausage sizzle. Start time 2pm. 25-27 September at Sissinghurst Cricket Club, Sissinghurst Road, Cranbrook, TN17 2JA. In the pretty village of Sissinghurst Castle and Gardens. Bus to nearby Hawkhurst and Maidstone. Start time 2pm. 2-4 October at Sandwich Junior School, St. Barts Road, Sandwich, CT13 0AS. School is a short walk from the 42 MOTOR CARAVANNER September 2026
historic town of Sandwich. Professional entertainment on the Saturday evening. Start time 5pm. Bookable. Please contact Sharon on kent@themotorcaravannersclub.co.uk for any bookable rallies.
LANCASHIRE Aspull Rugby Club, 10-12 July. With the heatwave in full flow this rally was compact and bijou; a total of 11 vans all Lancashire attended the event which was hosted by David, Ann, Janet and Steve. Outside the hall were picnic tables where some had their evening meal al fresco. The hall provided refuge from the fierce heat, as we filled the bar area on Friday evening for bingo and a ‘What’s in Janet’s head quiz’. Saturday morning the fittest amongst us did tai chi, others took a leisurely stroll to the local pie shop. In the afternoon there was crafting with Ann and some went walking in the nearby woodlands which provided some respite from the heat, while others had a BBQ. The evening entertainment was chaotic to say the least – Steve aced the music and also refereed as Carole and Janet went head to head on rule clarification. Enough said, it was hilarious! This was aptly followed with a quiz from Ann and our usual Best of Friends. Sunday coffee morning the chairman declared the bonus ball and raffle winners and sent us on our way. Our next rally was Cononley 23-26 July. This was a three night rally and always a favourite as there are trains to Skipton and Leeds with lovely walks in the town, as well as the local pubs just a short walk away. There were 31 vans one from NWM&NW, one Yorkshire and 29 from Lancashire. This was hosted by Mel, Sandra, Jimmy and Carole. The event was made better this year as there was the use of the tractor shed, unlike the previous rally this one was much cooler in the evening but that never dampens the spirits. Jimmy was our DJ for the weekend, Allan our bingo master, Brian assisted with take your pick, Carole the MC for the event; believe it or not conducted proceedings from a pulpit – only in the Lancashire group! We had the usual bingo, take your pick, raffles, bonus ball, music and dancing, as well as a special raffle for an expensive bottle of whiskey with proceeds going to our charity Southport Lifeboats. If nothing else, the Lancashire group knows how to cater, for some there was a full English breakfast, others BBQs and other Spanish paella in a huge pan that could have fed the whole campsite followed by cake – did someone say cake? Eddie Garside ate three pieces! Sunday raffles and bonus balls were called with some taking the lion share of the prizes ‘Beryl’ chairman wished us a safe journey home and the rally was closed. Scribe Deena Upcoming rallies: 25-27 September at Rolls Royce Club BB18 6HJ. This rally is bookable. 9-11 October at Warren Farm L37 0AN. AGM. 22-25 October at Whittingham PR3 2JE. This rally is bookable. >>

GROUP NEWS MOTORCYCLE On Wednesday 1 July we met up at Chatsworth House, stewarded by our committee. This is a lovely site in woodland on the outskirts of the Chatsworth grounds. We had a welcome meeting that evening giving us details of ride outs and our surroundings. Thursday was a free day to explore the area on foot or motorbikes. On Friday, Martin led a ride out to The Secret Diner at Sudbury Prison for lunch. We had great views of Chatsworth House and the surrounding area as we rode by and up into the hills to our destination. We filled up half the cafe in the reserved area. The food was excellent and great value too. Then we returned through Ashbourne to the Old Smithy Cafe at Monyash. We met up that evening for a Chase quiz and as usual when we got the answers, there was a lot of ‘I told you so!’ Another free day on Saturday. Some went to the Bakewell Carnival and ‘Well Dressings’. Others went to a Harley Davison Motorbike Event. Graham and Ann led the last ride out on Sunday to the Yonder Man cafe in the Peak District, where we had some lovely local food. We then rode down Winnats Pass, along Hope Valley and back to site. We all left on the Monday to travel to the next rally at Casthorpe Farm, near Grantham for the next five days. Our stewards, Tony and Sandra welcomed us to their rally that evening with cakes and Martin told us about the planned ride outs. The next day Martin led a ride out to Brownhills Motorhomes for lunch. We rode down a lot of really straight country roads where we could see for miles all around us. It was a really hot day and everyone was wearing their coolest gear (see photo). Then we rode over to the Kawasaki show room for a looksee! We met up in the evening for a quiz and chatted in our groups. Wednesday was a free day to explore the area on our own. We met later that evening and Tony and Sandra put us into groups of girls versus boys for the guessing game of ‘Who Am I?’ After much laughter it was a draw.
On Thursday Martin led the last ride out to the lovely country town of Sleaford for breakfast and we returned to site via the Woodland Waters Campsite for an ice cream. Upcoming rallies: 2-7 September at Daisy Farm Campsite, Highbridge, TA9 4PG. 7-21 September at The Old Stables Campsite, Hayle, Cornwall, TR27 5EA. Bookable. This also includes our AGM on Saturday 12 September. Further details can be found on our MCG website.
NENE VALLEY Reydon, 16-24 July. Tony, Kathleen and Mick arrived on site early to open up the site for us. We had 15 vans: seven Nene Valley, three Anglia, two Chiltern, one East Midlands, one Northern Counties and one Sussex. The weather was decidedly cooler over in the east of the country with a constant wind blowing. Coffee morning was on Friday and in the evening we had the use of the community hall where Jane arranged a couple of games of bingo and Tony delivered a quiz ‘with a difference’ with old sayings incorporated. Saturday and Sunday were free to visit Southwold or those with bus passes, Lowestoft, Beccles, Norwich and Yarmouth. On Monday we held a late afternoon ‘sausage sizzle’ and get together which always seems to be popular. On the Tuesday evening we were back in the hall for Jane’s bingo and a new game to us – Scattergories – the answers to some of the categories I’m afraid would not be for tender ears! On Wednesday we held our competition to find the new ‘Bowmen of England’ which was won by Mick Midgeley. This was followed by cake to round off the afternoon. Thursday we had our final coffee morning before we departed next day to Weeley. We were pleased to have Steve and Marion Wynn from CoM with us, again trying to catch their breath between their many duties for the Club and Steve updated us on what was happening in the CoM world and in particular, updates on the National at Statfold 2027 which will be bigger and better than ever! Our thanks to Anglia Group for the use of their patch and to our stewards and everyone who helped. >>

GROUP NEWS Homestead Lake Park, Weeley, 24-29 July. A disappointing turn out but we managed 13 vans: eight Nene Valley, one East Midlands, two Chiltern, one Sussex. Colin and Lynne were our enthusiastic new stewards who, as we had acres of space, parked us up in an interesting waggon corral style which worked well. We began on Friday evening with ‘Pimms o’ clock’ organised again by Steve and Di. Always popular and a great way of getting people together – thank you once again both! Clacton, Walton on the Naze, Frinton and Brightlingsea seemed to be popular visiting places, with a bus stop just outside the site. Colin and Denis managed to get in a good days fishing on site and the on site accessory shop did brisk business with our on site card discount helping. Lynne and Colin layed on a lovely cream tea for us followed by a game of Smite – thank you both for all your work – you are now officially trained stewards! Our thanks go to Essex Group for what I think is our first venture onto their patch which we enjoyed very much. Colin and Lynne have also asked to pass on their thanks to everyone for their help and support. Pat Upcoming rallies: 11-14 September at Harpole Scarecrows, Grange Farm, Harpole, NN7 4DJ. 24-28 September at Cranford Steam & Country Fayre, A14/J11/ A510 Cranford. 30 October-1 November at Prince William School, Herne Road, Oundle, PE8 4BS. AGM on Saturday 10.30am.
NORTHERN COUNTIES Grasmere – On arrival, everyone was given a sheet of paper with a number and name of an animal to draw and place on their van in order to win a major prize for the best drawing and also a prize for the most correct answers. The first night was mostly a social night a time to catch up with old friends and make some new ones. John Bargh did his car quiz. On waking on Wednesday, the weather was bright and sunny so most went off on the bus to Keswick, Penrith or Windermere. Some others had a walk around Grasmere. We played card bingo at night and John organised a music quiz which everyone enjoyed, singing along while trying to guess the artist. Thursday afternoon we played Kubb. At night we played bingo followed by the group’s choice of entertainment, which was more great music in the form of a quiz (I think John has found a new career). Friday those that stayed on the site or returned in time entered a game of Kubb. At night we played card bingo. John did his ladies quiz; this was famous ladies names. Background music filled the air, while everyone chatted and laughed the night away. Saturday night was the cheese and wine party with five different types of cheese and three wine varieties. With a resplendent amount of biscuit varieties. John read the first 46 MOTOR CARAVANNER September 2026
part of the monologue of Albert and the lion and then a quiz on the UK. Pauline and Ken from NC played and sang songs where everyone joined in, and sang along. The night ended with John reading the second part of Albert, just so no one went to bed feeling sad for the poor young lad. Sunday morning everyone gathered for coffee. We then announced the figures for attendance, groups attending and the winners of all the games, quizzes and drawing competition. Marilyn said that there were several spaces still available, and it was a great venue with toilets and showers, something to be remembered for next season. Whitley Bay – The hosts seem to have made a big impression, all enjoyed the activities of the event, still no reports of the bike ride causing any dehydration problems so a suitable café must have been found. Imagine a café starting with the letter W, unbelievable. Well done Stuart and Susan Collingwood. Corbridge – Lovely peaceful rally, well except for the odd train, flock of crows at 5am, roars and boos from the football shenanigans. We had a whopping 41 attendees in perfect harmony. Couple of nights in the clubhouses. Visitors from East Midlands, NWM&NW, Anglia. Our big thanks to Marilyn, John, Tracey and Glen in helping us pitch up. Stokesley – Thanks to our hosts Chris and Laurie Shaw for a great rally! And well done to Doug and Jill Wardle for winning the quiz! And to Sue Tindle for winning the fantastic “Stokesley Bear” made by the very talented Chris Shaw! Michael Davidson Upcoming rallies: 4-9 September at South Sheilds, Bents Park. Hosts: Committee. 9-14 September at Backworth. Hosts: Ken & Pauline Fleming. 18-21 September at Beadnell.
N. IRELAND NW200 Rally started on Friday 8th May with hosts Jane and Harry, and co-hosts Iris and Bob. As people arrived and the numbers got high some helpers stepped in to help with traffic control, setting up and parking motorhomes safely: Ken and Shelia, Peter and Marie, and Annie and Les. All went to plan, information sheets were given on arrival. On Friday night we had music by DJ Albert, a great choice for all ages. A coin toss for a bottle of vodka was done during the evening, this raised £90 for the chairman’s charity and was won by Les Chambers. Les put the bottle up for auction and raised £42; winning bidder was James Duncan. Music stopped as scheduled and everyone had a great night. Saturday morning started with sunshine. Beverly and Robert Coulter cooked frys and raised money for the chairman’s charity. People relaxed, some went watching the racing and others a nice walk around town. Saturday night we had music by Niall with a fantastic range that had all up dancing and enjoying the evening. Raffle was done with a lot of goodies for everyone, great craic. Music came to a close at midnight and all retired to bed, a fantastic night. Sunday morning meeting at 11am led by host Harry and
GROUP NEWS Jane. With the bottle toss (£90), and auction (£42), plus Beverly and Robert Coulter’s frys (£50), a total of £182 was raised for the chairman’s charity. The number plate draw was difficult as a lot had already left, we had four winners: Albert and Olivia, Robert and Joy, James and Janice and Harry and Jane.
NWM&NW A fantastic 65 vans made the most of the glorious sunshine and joined us for some – or all – of our three back-to-back rallies in Wales. We began our Welsh adventure in beautiful Betws-Y-Coed, hosted by Mark and Candy. Over three nights, our members enjoyed bingo, quizzes, and a raffle, with plenty of laughter and good spirits throughout. Next, we travelled to Caernarfon where Dennis and Ann welcomed everyone with their usual enthusiasm. The entertainment continued with more bingo, quizzes, a lively Beetle Drive, and several of Dennis’s trademark fun games. Highlights included a fish & chip supper, a sausage sizzle, and a superb cheese board kindly supplied by David Meacock. Our third Welsh rally brought us to the stunning lakeside town of Bala – a perfect setting to unwind after the busy trilogy. Many took the opportunity to explore the town, enjoying local restaurants, cafés, and bars. A big thank you to Eileen and Linda for hosting this relaxing finale. Eileen and Linda were back in charge for our next rally at the picturesque Eccleshall Castle, where 18 vans arrived to yet more sunshine. Hydration was clearly a priority, with many feeling compelled to visit the local drinking establishments. In the evening, the friendly rivalry between the Men’s and Women’s quiz teams continued – each side claiming one victory apiece. Thanks also goes to Phil for his Brummie banter which kept everyone entertained. Upcoming rallies: 1-6 September at Salford Children’s Home. 18-20 September at Alveley S&S Club. 9-11 October is our AGM.
SCOTTISH Hello fellow members, although it has been very sunny weather it’s raining as I write this newsletter. By the time you receive your copy the summer will virtually be over for another year. Lochore Meadows rally had a turnout of 19 vans, 17 Scottish, one from Northern Counties and the other from Yorkshire. This meeting proved how difficult it can be for the Rally Officer to predict. By that I mean three years ago only two members booked for this venue and the meet had to be cancelled. This year we could have filled the venue as two members tried to book after the closing date. The rally was hosted by Richard and Katrina who arranged a chippie delivery on the Friday evening. Having no tents and no hall available we were lucky with the weather. Socials were held on site using the grass area in the centre.
Various activities were supplied by our hosts. These included bingo, a brain teaser, cornhole, boules, and throwing a plastic axe at a target. Bill Christie also put out the Viking Kub, so plenty activities were available for members to use. Others enjoyed country park walks, and the café in the park. The following rally at Perth Caravan Park was hosted by Allan and Lorraine Hay. Although it was the first time they had hosted, they were very organised, enthusiastic and did very well. Nine Scottish members attended and full site facilities were available. The site allowed us to erect our tents for social gatherings. Members enjoyed banter, laughs and conversation in the tents with a few drinks of the happy juice. Both rallies had coffee mornings on Sunday with cakes to savour. New members joined onsite at Perth, Jens and Jacinta Sauer and were invited to our social on the Saturday night, haste ye back. Come this time of the year we invite members to consider standing for committee. The main requirement for next year is for members to sign up to assist as the main positions should be covered. The stark reality is if we can’t cover certain rallies, they may have to be cancelled at late notice. This I have noticed does happen with larger groups than the Scottish Group. Forthcoming rallies are as follows: Drum Estate Edinburgh from the 3-7 September on grass with fresh water and elsan disposal costing £12 p.u.p.n. Logierait near Pitlochry from 11-14 September on grass. This rally has fresh water and elsan disposal and the Pitlochry Highland Games are on the Saturday. Cost £12 p.u.p.n. plus the usual rally fee of £1 per person and both rallies start at 2pm. That’s all for now folks take care. Squeezebox
SEVERN VALLEY National Festival at Statford Country Park, Tamworth. 21-26 May. We had 27 members attend from Severn Valley, eight of those being new members, our theme for this event was colours and Severn Valley colour was sky blue. The days proved to be very hot. Group Marshalls were Jan and Mick, Tony and Ann who showed members where to park etc. There was bingo on Thursday evening followed by live music and a disco. Friday morning began with craft sessions followed by Groups conference where groups could ask CoM questions. There was a Q&A session on Haven and Casual campsites, magazine and foreign travel. Members also had a chance to ask questions of the disability and safety officer. In the evening all groups paraded their banners for the official opening ceremony. Saturday afternoon Severn Valley members gathered together for a picnic before entering the marquee in the evening with our colour theme to enjoy live music and disco. Sunday held a dog show and homecraft, inter-group quiz and entertainment from Hayley Mills/ I’m Every Whitney. Monday saw the closing ceremony with prize giving for homecraft, group and individual attendance, followed by a >> September 2026 MOTOR CARAVANNER 47
GROUP NEWS raffle. In the evening there was entertainment; it was so hot many members sat outside. Tuesday everyone packed up for home. Wilmcote Rally, 5-7 June. We had 11 vans, nine Severn Valley, one S&W Wales, one Anglia (first rally with Severn Valley). Elsan point and water was based at the end of the field; amenities included a local social club within a few yards where there was bingo on Friday night. There is also a local public house and shop in the village. There is a local bus and train station to take you in to Stratford upon Avon. Rally Marshalls hosting were Liz and Derrick Harrison, assisted by Gail and Steve Cole. We had a warm but windy start on Friday which got a bit chilly in the evening, luckily the social club were holding a bingo night and raffle followed by sitting in the lounge area where members could all have a chat whilst relaxing with a drink. Friday night in to early Saturday morning we had some heavy downpours but soon brightened up so members could use the day to go in to Stratford by bus or train. For those wanting a quieter time, the local pub were serving meals or you could simply relax by your van or enjoy a walk with the dog. Saturday evening members all went down to the local social club again to catch up on the days events and shared where each other had been. Sunday was the usual coffee morning where members gathered around the hosts’ van. Liz read out the number of vans attending from where in the country. She thanked everyone for supporting the rally and hoped everybody had enjoyed themselves. Upcoming rallies: 17-21 September at Northern Farm.
S&W WALES Hi everyone. 2-6 July at Aberaeron Rugby Club. What a fabulous location for a rally, the weather was excellent with views looking out to sea. The hosts were Rob Thomas (first time hosting), Sue and Keith Howard. Well done Rob. Fifty vans were parked up, and we had visitors from Seven Valley x 3, West Country x 1, first timers were Wendy and Peter Jones, John and Karen Holcombe, Vi and Mark James, Diane and Phil Williams, Dave and Sue Morris, Kat and Steve Lloyd. Welcome all to the club. The walk into the town was via the coastal path or the main road. People made their way to the pub to watch the rugby Wales v Fiji and weren’t disappointed with the result. Plenty of eateries to enjoy. Happy birthday wishes went to Geoff Knight. Anniversary wishes went to Kath and Pete, Helen and Alan Furlong. We were entertained on Saturday by Nikki Dee (from Ebw Vale) and a fantastic singer she was too. We played plenty of bingo over the weekend, a quiz was fitted in also. A note from the Chair: The Club S&WW Insurance Policy. Please note, any damage to vans and equipment ie wind-out awnings and yurts etc in adverse weather conditions are the responsibility of the owner and not the club. If your 48 MOTOR CARAVANNER September 2026
equipment gets damage by wind or by another members’ equipment, then they will be held responsible. During adverse weather or a forecast of such, members are advised to pack up yurts and wind-in awnings etc. More information can be found in the rules and regulations booklet. Hereford Rowing Club, 23-26 July. A beautiful and very hot rally in this historic town was hosted by Elizabeth and Colin, Pete and Kath. They parked up 52 vans, well done. We had quite a few visitors: Lancs x 1, SWP x 5, Severn Valley x1 and Scotland x 1. First timers were Mike Callaghan, Olivia and Phillip Retter, Ceri Jones with Callum and Alfie. Taster: Paul Firth and Harvey. Most people went a look around the beautiful city of Hereford. On Friday night the hosts held a quiz. Saturday we held the raffle and played bingo, (big thanks to Barrie). There was big prize money. Thanks to all that attended and a safe journey home on Sunday. SWP We had a lovely four-night rally at Bossiney, Tintagel where the sun shone the whole time for us and there was a cooling breeze off the sea. In total there were 19 vans with 17 from SWP, one from Chiltern and one from S&W Wales. On Thursday evening everyone enjoyed a welcome mojito and some snacks and mostly stayed out enjoying the sunshine until the sun set around 10pm. Friday was warm but people went out on foot exploring the area – Boscastle, Tintagel, the SW Coastal path and St Nectan’s Glen as well as taking cooling off swims in Bossiney Cove. In the evening, everyone really pulled out the stops and we had a magnificent table of salads followed by a table of desserts, for everyone to share with their barbequed meat. It was a wonderful evening, sharing food and fellowship. On Saturday evening we were spared the task of cooking as a local Duck Truck delivered us take away duck meals. Sunday we had the coffee morning and some very happy people who walked away with cash prizes from the raffle! Thank you to all who joined us. We loved hosting you. Dave and Beryl Kotze Veryan Country Fayre. Twenty-three vans turned up on a bit of a wet morning on the Thursday to be greeted by our hosts Dave and Linda with Marion and Pete as their little helpers. However, by the time we were all settled the sun came out and it became quite hot. In the evening they hosted a meet and greet in the Elerkey Bar with hot Cornish pasties and sausage rolls and of course a few drinks and lots of catching up to do. Later on it was very interesting
GROUP NEWS watching all the activities of the locals setting up the stalls and obstacles for the country fair. Friday, two more vans joined us making 25 SWP in total. The weather continued to be hot but with a very welcome breeze. The energetic and fit members amongst us walked to Melinsay Mill, a quaint coffee come bric a brac shop, then onwards to Pendower Beach. Some caught a hopper bus to Portloe and enjoyed a swim in the sea. Others caught the bus to St Mawes, then the ferry to Falmouth for the day. In the evening the local pub delivered the fish & chips ordered earlier. Saturday, the Country fair kicked off at 1pm. We watched lots of teams compete in a hilarious game of ‘It’s a Knockout’ with a lot of cheating going on in order to win! The dog agility competition was amazing. My favourite was sitting in the sun listening to various musicians and singers. In the evening we all got together in the club house for an evening of dancing to Gilly Lee Whyte singing all the songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s, a great time was had by all. Sunday, we had our usual coffee morning, the raffle was drawn and the chair thanked everyone for coming and making the rally a huge success. Upcoming rallies: 10-14 September at River Dart Country Park, Ashburton, Devon TQ13 7NP. 25-30 September at Porth Beach, Porth, Newquay – fully booked. 8-12 October at Woodlands Leisure Park. AGM Friday 9th October.
SUSSEX Another fantastic rally at the Lavender line, Isfield. There were 18 vans, including visitors from East Wessex, Anglia and Kent. As we were next to a historic train line which is run by volunteers we were lucky that they were running vintage diesel trains on Sunday. The field is also at the back of the Laughing Fish pub which served good food, both Thai and English meals, and excellent breakfasts at the weekend. There was also live music in the pub garden. Some members took the opportunity to catch buses to either Uckfield, Lewes or Brighton and everyone made the most of the good weather. Marilyn and Dave were excellent hosts and provided some quizzes and card bingo in the evenings, and during the day various crafts could be tried. They also provided a cream tea on Saturday. As this is a community enterprise for the village we were able to use a marquee that had been left from a previous event. All in all a great time, and a place that we will return to again. Upcoming rallies: 3-8 September at The Barn Campsite, Lancing BN15 8JG. Close to both Brighton and Worthing.
WEST COUNTRY On 30th June we gathered at Minehead Rugby Club for our first rally of July. Seventeen units attended. Members were able to catch the bus to Lynmouth or Watchet as well as walking into Minehead during the day. In the evening there was a quiz one night and skittles another. An enjoyable weekend due to host Brian.
The next rally was at Barnstaple BOCAS from 14-19 July where 21 units attended. The clubhouse was open on Wednesday to allow members to watch the football. On Thursday we had bingo alfresco which was fun. Saturday was the Green Man Festival which many took the opportunity to join and enjoy. Once again the availability of buses was appreciated with members going to Ilfracombe, Bideford and Westward Ho! Chas would like to thank Ian Hickman for his support and help in running the rally. The third rally of the month was Exmouth Rugby Club, hosted by the committee. This was attended by 75 vans. Some even took a boat trip along the Jurassic coast. There was an afternoon tea with cakes and a tabletop sale on different afternoons which combined raised £122.85 for the group charity. On the evenings we had access to the clubhouse, we had a meet and greet and time to chat and another night we had bingo. By time you read this our rally at Bude will have taken place but in September we have our AGM weekend at Yeatheridge Farm, Crediton on 24-27 September. Nomination forms will be available at Bude. 14-18 October sees us back at Kingsdown Tail, near Sidmouth. We hope to see you at one of the upcoming events.
WEST WESSEX Stephen and Keith hosted a superb West Wessex rally at Weymouth RFC, held jointly with Nene Valley and attracting over 50 vans from MCC regions across the country. The rally field was also shared with the Caravan and Motorhome Club at this ever‑popular Dorset location. With fine weather throughout, ralliers made the most of the coast, countryside, and history that make Weymouth such a favourite spot. The beach and harbour offered classic seaside charm, lined with cafés and the essential fish‑and‑chip supper. Cyclists enjoyed easy riding along the Rodwell Trail, the former railway line to Portland, with some venturing out to the dramatic 18‑mile sweep of Chesil Beach. Weymouth’s excellent bus network added even more options, with routes to Portland, Littlemoor, Chickerell, and Poundbury via Dorchester. On site, members gathered for a friendly coffee morning with biscuits, a Pimms social, and a well‑supported raffle. Stephen and Keith pass on their thanks to everyone who attended and helped make the rally another great success. Dean and Sandra welcomed 35 vans to the July rally at Wareham, with several members arriving straight from the Haven Weymouth week deal. The highlight of the weekend was the Wareham Carnival, themed Your Natural World, which treated ralliers to a colourful Sunday procession, live music, food stalls, and entertainment at the Recreation Ground. Back at the rally field, Sunday’s coffee morning brought everyone together once more. Congratulations to Vic Clayton, winner of the football fun quiz, and a warm welcome was extended to new MCC members Iain and Rossanna Todd on their first rally with the club. YORKSHIRE Settle Rugby Club rally, 10-13 July. This was hosted by our rally officer Chris Stephens, assisted by Steve Joyce with the parking up. We had 17 Yorkshire members and one from East Midlands. Friday night started off in the room with quizzes and bingo but due to the heat we resumed outside for a music quiz. Saturday saw a few members go on the scenic Settle to Carlisle railway trip, other enjoyed doing the walk around quiz. The flower pot festival started on Saturday and many members enjoyed walking around town and enjoying the brilliant artistic and funny themed flower pots. On Saturday evening we had the quizzes outside, then a music quiz inside and a few stayed for the England world cup game. Sunday, again the weather was lovely, so we had coffee morning outside and afterwards a few members joined Malcolm Collins for a lovely walk following the river and finishing up in town for refreshments – some chose coffee, some went to the pub (it was quite hot). There was an artisan market in the square which members visited and enjoyed – buying an assortment of 50 MOTOR CARAVANNER September 2026
goodies. Sunday afternoon we played the ladder game thanks to Dave Robinson for always having it in his van – very good entertainment for a few hours. Thanks to everyone who made the weekend go so well. Thirsk Racecourse rally, 17-20 July. A four-day rally with 20 vans from Yorkshire, three from Northern Counties, three from East Midlands and two from Lancashire. We even recruited one motorhome owner to become a member and join our rally. Two vans were first timers. The weekend hosts were Jean and Sean Sowley, with a daily what’s on board giving suggestions as to what was available, including a walking quiz round Thirsk, markets and the world of James Herriot museum. The evenings were round the vans with plenty of silly games and an odd quiz. There were ball games, a feely bag game, paper plane flying and a good deal of laughter and fun. Crakenhouse Farm, Leyburn, 24-27 July. Eighteen members joined our rally, including the hosts Nigel and Jan Pamplin – 16 from Yorkshire, one Lancashire and one Northern Counties. A breezy start to the first day but many joined the hosts for dingbats and quizzes in the evening. Saturday we had an early coffee morning due the weather on Sunday not looking so good – some members walked to The Shawl, a well known walk in Leyburn, and others joined Malcolm Collins on a 5k walk around the river and back into town – where welcome refreshments were consumed. Quizzes and games were played in the evening. Sunday saw a few members leave but others enjoyed another walk – finished by a carvery lunch at The Bolton Arms. Sunday evening we had a game of ‘left, right & centre’ and another quiz. Upcoming rallies: 10-14 September at Yacht Club “Race The Wave” YO15 3QL. Booking for this rally opens on Tuesday 28th July. THE EAST MIDLANDS
CATHEDRALS, COASTLINES AND COUNTRY ROADS Frances and Michael Howorth tour Lincolnshire to discover towering cathedrals, golden beaches, rolling countryside and rich history.
H
ere is a county of hidden treasures, a place where cathedrals rival any in Europe, where beaches stretch for miles, where market towns retain their character, and where local producers continue traditional crafts with pride. For motorcaravanners, Lincolnshire offers long, straight and pleasantly uncomplicated roads, where the landscape stretches towards distant horizons. Villages appear unexpectedly from the fenlands, while church towers rise above fields of wheat and barley, and around every corner lies another fascinating story. Lincolnshire’s claim to possess the touring ‘holy trinity’ of city, coast and countryside certainly stands up to scrutiny. We found within its boundaries welcoming campsites, fascinating attractions and plenty of space to explore. Our own Lincolnshire adventure began on the county’s southern border near Stamford, home to Burghley House and Gardens. Without doubt this is England’s finest Elizabethan house. The
legacy of William Cecil, the 1st Lord Burghley (1520-1598) and Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I, his decedents have lived in the house ever since. The parkland surrounding the house is free to enter, and you can buy tickets to tour the house and gardens or just pay to visit the gardens which include a fabulous Tudor-inspired Garden of Surprises and a Sculpture Garden. Each July, the family hosts one of the country’s most popular Battle Proms concerts, an event we try not to miss. This quintessentially British ‘party in the park’ features a twohour orchestral programme with all the ‘last night of the proms’ finale favourites, all in the surroundings of one of the UK’s most stunning stately homes. We love these open-air spectacles. They combine classical music, aerial displays, cavalry demonstrations and spectacular pyrotechnics. We brought along our own picnic and enjoyed our favourite summer evening in our busy touring calendar. Leaving Stamford the next day, we headed >> September 2026 MOTOR CARAVANNER 55

St Botolph’s Church known as Boston Stump. north on the A15 towards the village of Burton Pedwardine. Few visitors associate Lincolnshire with wine production, yet the county’s increasingly favourable climate is producing interesting results. At Mayfield Vineyard, fourthgeneration farmer, Fraser Key, combines interference free farming with modern viticulture and offers vineyard tours and tastings sessions by appointment. Our next stop was Boston, a town where fortunes have risen and fallen with the centuries. Dominating the skyline is St Botolph’s Church, universally known as the Boston Stump. Its steeple-less tower rises more than 80m above the surrounding landscape which, because it is so flat, has meant the tower has served for centuries as a navigation marker for travellers and seafarers. When open, visitors can climb the tower for magnificent views across the Lincolnshire fens. Over its 700-year history the church has played its part in both national and international history. It will be forever linked through the puritan emigrants who, in 1630, followed in the wake of the Pilgrim Fathers and founded the
city of Boston in the United States of America. Boston marks one end of the Water Railway Cycle Route, a largely traffic-free cycle trail that follows the former railway line linking the town with Lincoln. The route follows the River Witham through beautiful fenland scenery and passes villages including Washingborough, Bardney and Southrey. Along the way, commissioned artworks celebrate Lincolnshire’s heritage, including references to Alfred Lord Tennyson. Our own bike ride brought us to Woodhall Spa, one of Lincolnshire’s most attractive inland resorts. There we enjoyed a splendid dinner the historic Petwood Hotel. During the Second World War the hotel became home to RAF 617 Squadron, better known as the Dambusters. Today the Squadron Bar remains filled with aviation memorabilia, photographs and even a prototype Barnes Wallis bouncing bomb. Our food and service were top notch while the buildings atmosphere makes it essential viewing for aviation enthusiasts. For our stopover that night, we chose Bainside Camping and Caravan

Louth Distillery.
The Cheese Shop & Deli in Louth. Park at nearby Kirkby on Bain. Fiona and Paul have put in years of hard work and effort to create this wonderfully friendly touring park, and it is clear, from the way the site is laid out and run, that they are highly experienced motorhomers themselves. The next day we set off for the seaside. Locals affectionately call it ‘Skeggy’, while detractors suggest ‘SkegVegas’ would be a more appropriate name! But no visit to Lincolnshire would be complete without this stop. The resort itself owes much of its success to perhaps Britain’s most famous travel poster. In 1908, illustrator John Hassall created the now legendary image of the Jolly Fisherman, commissioned by the Great Northern Railway, bounding across the beach beneath the slogan “Skegness is SO Bracing”, the poster became an instant success and transformed Skegness into one of Britain’s leading seaside resorts. Driving north from Skegness reveals a very different coastline to the brash seaside holiday towns. Anderby Creek, Moggs Eye, Huttoft Beach and Sutton-on-Sea showcase a quieter side of Lincolnshire. Vast
skies, wild, empty beaches and rolling dunes create a sense of space that is increasingly difficult to find else-where. Sadly, many beach car parks employ height restrictions while at others, official notices make it very clear that motorcaravans are not welcome. Beyond Mablethorpe lies Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes National Nature Reserve, one of the county’s most important wildlife habitats. Mablethorpe itself retains all the charm of a traditional seaside resort while boasting an awardwinning Blue Flag beach with miles of soft golden sand, but even here parking a campervan is somewhat difficult. Our overnight stop within the Louth Livestock Market made for an interesting if unusual spot. But it placed us perfectly for exploring what many regard as Lincolnshire’s most attractive market town. Known as the Capital of the Wolds, Louth sits where the Lincolnshire Wolds meet the marshlands. Its Georgian streets are lined with independent shops, cafés and specialist food retailers. Dominating the town is St James’ Church, its elegant spire is the third
tallest in Britain and can be seen for miles across the surrounding countryside. For food lovers don’t miss Lakings of Louth, renowned for its butchery, and The Cheese Shop, which has now gained nationwide recognition. A short walk leads to Hubbard’s Hills, a beautiful steep-sided chalk valley offering one of Lincolnshire’s finest natural beauty spots. Before leaving Louth, we joined a tasting session at the Pin Gin School. Here we learned about the distillation process and how, if you have two or three hours to spare, you can create your own personalised gin blend. Lincolnshire’s maritime history comes alive in Grimsby – a town we imagined would be full of trawlers fresh from fishing the North Sea. But Grimsby is no longer the bustling, deep-sea port that once earned it the title of the world’s largest fishing harbour. The Cod Wars with Iceland, changing fishing rights, and the collapse of Britain’s distant-water fleet has transformed the town forever. Forced to reinvent itself, it has become our leading seafood processing centre; a third of all seafood consumed in Britain passes through this town. Much of the fish sold here is landed elsewhere, particularly in Iceland, Norway and northern Europe, before arriving by refrigerated ship or lorry for auction, processing and distribution. Our first stop was Alfred Enderby Traditional Fish Smokers. The century-old smokehouse continues to use traditional methods refined over generations. Patrick and Toni Salmon now run the family business and offer fascinating tours explaining the smoking process. Their traditional brick-built smokehouse, with its distinctive ornate iron cowls, is roughly a century old, it gives their smoked fish a special flavour, which comes from the layers of tar that have built up within the smokehouse. A visitor tour concludes with a tasting session and an opportunity to purchase smoked fish. Nearby, the Ross Tiger trawler and Grimsby >>

Doddington Hall. Fishing Heritage Centre tell the story of a fishing industry that once fed much of Britain. After spending the night at Otby House Caravan Park, an adultsonly, off-grid and delightful family run CL we visited Cote Hill Farm at Osgodby. Here the Davenport family have transformed their dairy farming business into a cheese making enterprise bringing national recognition, including a Supreme Champion title at the British Cheese Awards. Further south, the Hemswell Antique Centres provided an entirely different experience. Occupying a former RAF base, the site claims to be Europe’s largest antiques centre with four vast buildings containing thousands of antiques and collectables. Motorhomes are welcome to stay overnight, in a special secure area, making it a convenient stop for touring enthusiasts. Nearby, Doddington Hall offers another enjoyable day out. The Elizabethan Hall is surrounded by attractive gardens and woodland walks. Every summer, the gardens are transformed into a beautiful backdrop for their annual sculpture exhibition. Created by artists from across the UK and beyond, they are selected to complement each area of the garden, creating an eclectic exhibition to suit a wide range of tastes, styles and budgets. The on-site Grain Store café provided us with an excellent opportunity to sample local produce from a menu a cut above
Lincoln Cathedral from the Medieval wall walk. most other cafes linked to stately homes, and it made a great lunch time stop for us before we continued towards Lincoln. This city rises dramatically above the surrounding landscape, dominated by the magnificent cathedral that once stood as the tallest building in the world. One of our most fascinating experiences was joining the cathedral’s Historic Graffiti Tour led by Nigel Simpson, a cathedral volunteer tour guide. More than 8,000 historic inscriptions have been identified throughout the building. Just across the square from the cathedral stands Lincoln Castle. Built by William the Conqueror in 1068, it has witnessed sieges, civil wars, royal visits and political intrigue. Walking the restored medieval wall offers superb views across the city. The castle also houses one of only four surviving original copies of the Magna Carta. We really enjoyed exploring the Victorian prison, courthouse and the castle’s imposing towers but what really fascinated us was the prisoners’ chapel, a 19th-century structure featuring individual, coffinlike wooden stalls which is the only surviving separate-system chapel

The Victorian Prision Chapel in Lincoln Castle. remaining in the world. After history comes shopping, and we enjoyed exploring Lincoln’s Bailgate area. Cobbled streets weave between medieval buildings, independent shops and welcoming cafés. It is the perfect place to spend an afternoon. As we reluctantly turned Voyager towards home, we conceded that Lincolnshire had quietly confounded our every expectation. From soaring cathedrals and historic market towns, to empty beaches, rolling wolds and welcoming campsites, the county had revealed a richness that rewards unhurried exploration. Add passionate local producers, remarkable heritage and roads that seem made for leisurely touring, and it’s clear this is a county to savour.

ottinghamshire may be one of England’s smaller counties, but it offers an impressive mix of history, legend and countryside. It is forever linked with Robin Hood, whose legendary home, Sherwood Forest, remains one of the county’s greatest attractions.. History lovers should visit Newstead Abbey, the romantic former home of Lord Byron. Nearby, Rufford Abbey and Clumber Park combine landscaped parkland with fascinating historic buildings, making them ideal for a leisurely day out. Nottingham itself is compact and easy to explore on foot. Visit Nottingham Castle before wandering through the historic Lace
Market, where independent shops, cafés and restored Victorian buildings create a lively atmosphere. No visit is complete without calling at Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, reputedly England’s oldest inn. For something different explore the National Justice Museum, where interactive exhibits bring centuries of crime and punishment to life. If you visit during Autumn, don’t miss the famous Goose Fair. This traditional travelling fair dates back more than 700 years and remains one of Britain’s largest. Rutland is England’s smallest county and proves that size means very little. It offers peaceful countryside, charming market towns and one of the country’s finest inland waters. Rutland Water is the county’s centrepiece. Cycle or walk its shoreline, hire a canoe, or watch majestic ospreys dive for fish over the vast reservoir. Motorcaravanners will find excellent bases at Rutland >>

Caravan & Camping Park or Stretton Lakes near Oakham. Oakham rewards visitors with independent shops and specialist retailers lining its attractive streets. Swans of Oakham is renowned for its collection of antique French beds, while nearby Heidi Kjeldsen creates handcrafted jewellery featuring diamonds, pearls, emeralds and sapphires. A few miles away Uppingham charms visitors with honey-coloured stone buildings, tearooms, bookshops and art galleries. Antique enthusiasts should visit Uppingham Antique Centre, where more than 70 dealers display their treasures inside an elegant Georgian building. Family-run businesses continue to give the town its distinctive character. Leicestershire combines rich history with unexpected discoveries. One of its most unusual attractions lies at Mount St Bernard Abbey near Coalville, where Cistercian monks continue a brewing tradition dating back to the nineteenth century. Following the Benedictine principle of “Pray and Work”, the monks support themselves by producing Tynt Meadow, Britain’s only Trappist beer. Brewed using recipes shared by fellow Trappist monasteries across Europe, this rich mahogany ale offers notes of dark chocolate, liquorice and dried fruit, balanced by pepper and fig before finishing warm and dry. For motorcaravanners, Breedon Priory Club site offers a peaceful stop beneath the impressive Norman church of St Mary and St Hardulph.
Mount St Bernard Abbey. Run by Elaine Shields, this welcoming certificated location provides an excellent base for exploring Donington Park, Calke Abbey, Melbourne Hall and Ashby Castle. Northamptonshire is a county of elegant country houses, peaceful waterways and rolling farmland. Elizabethan mansions stand within landscaped deer parks, while canals and rivers wind through pictureperfect villages. One of the county’s highlights is Stoke Bruerne on the Grand Union Canal. The village feels like a living museum, where many buildings date back more than 200 years. Historic locks, bridges, the entrance to Blisworth Tunnel and traditional

canal engineering remain remarkably well preserved. Although many associate Derbyshire with the North West, it officially belongs to England’s East Midlands. Its location often causes confusion because the western Peak District shares strong historical and transport links with Greater Manchester and Cheshire. The county’s greatest attraction is the Peak District National Park, Britain’s first national park. Its dramatic landscapes, limestone dales and gritstone edges attract walkers, cyclists and climbers throughout the year. Derbyshire also boasts some of England’s finest historic houses. Chatsworth House, home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, has appeared in numerous films and television dramas, including Pride and Prejudice. Nearby Haddon Hall offers one of the country’s best-preserved medieval manor houses. No visit would be complete without sampling the famous Bakewell pudding, first created in the market town that gave the dessert its name. Meanwhile, the city of Derby proudly celebrates its role in the Industrial Revolution, where engineering pioneers helped shape Britain’s manufacturing heritage.

MEET YOUR HOSTS | FIONA HOWARD & PAUL BEAUMONT
MEET
YOUR
HOSTS
Frances and Michael Howorth tour the countryside talking to owners and operators of motorcaravan campsites. This issue they get to meet Fiona Howard & Paul Beaumont from Bainside House Campsite and Fishing Lake in Lincolnshire. How long have you operated this campsite? We have been here now almost three years. We came here to take over a run-down campsite and create a serene escape in Lincolnshire. We tailored it for adults seeking relaxation and outdoor activities. We pride ourselves on providing a peaceful environment for touring motorcaravans on a site complemented by a fully stocked (and exciting to use) coarse fishery that is suitable for both amateur and seasoned anglers. What did you do before you opened this campsite? Both of us had a completely different way of life, I worked in quite a stressful job working for children’s social care, then in schools. Paul worked in commercial kitchens, in a job that saw him on the road a lot, travelling from Leeds to London several times a week. Do you have your own Motorhome or Campervan? We had our own motorhome and loved our travels so much that this is the reason why we chose to buy

and run a campsite. It was an 8.25m AutoTrails Gran Fontera and we lived in it full time while we renovated the house and campsite. We have sold it now and hope to replace it with a campervan. What is special about this site? Small, compact and perfectly formed, it is in a lovely quiet spot with dark skies at night and lots of wildlife. That’s what makes it special. But what makes it really special are those lovely customers who return time after time making the campsite a social spot where they can enjoy a chat with us and each other. Add in our stunning fishing lake with benches around its shore where
64 MOTOR CARAVANNER September 2026
people can go and sit and enjoy the views – and that makes it extra special. Tell us about the local area? There is so much to do here, with lots of local countryside and woodland walks just minutes from the campsite, or you can walk or cycle, in the nearby Lincolnshire Wolds. Yet the coast is just a 35-minute drive away. Our village of Woodhall Spa, regarded as one of Lincolnshire’s most attractive, came about by accident when someone made several failed attempts to find coal. The enterprise was abandoned after the 1000-footdeep shaft filled with spring water. It was then discovered that the iodine-rich water had healing benefits. So Spa Baths were built so that visitors could ‘take the waters’, and the village grew on the strength of that. The Spa Baths may now be in disuse, but lots of people come here intrigued by its World War 2 history. What is the funniest thing that has happened at the campsite? There have been a few but one that springs to mind is when a mole took up residence underneath a groundsheet, causing tables and chairs to become uneven. Morning tea got spilt and it was like walking on the moon inside the tent. What’s your top tip for any site visitor? Remembering your last question, I should say - Lock the shower block doors! But sit around the lake on an evening with a bit of a picnic or bottle of prosecco, is perhaps my top tip. The lake really does come alive, and if you sit long enough, you will almost certainly see the kingfishers. How often are you fully booked? In the summer months every weekend is full. What are your hobbies? We both love Northern soul, Motown and a bit of a dance, and you will not have failed to notice how much we
strong. Housed in a former cricket pavilion, it opened in 1922 as one of the first cinemas in Britain and is the last cinema in the country to use back projection. And yes, Kinema is pronounced with a hard K, but noone is sure why! What is your favourite local restaurant for dinner? We highly rate Montebello’s in Horncastle. It is a family-run restaurant offering fresh and authentic Italian food. They produce great fresh food and its cooked to order. What is your favourite local pub for a drink? The Ebrington Arms is a 16th century pub and restaurant perfectly situated right next door to the campsite. They serve simple, good things, done well. It’s known for its classic home-cooked pub food, homemade puds, and a well-stocked bar. We like the way their menus change with the seasons, featuring fresh produce from the coast and local suppliers.
