DORSET Dazzling

Brimming with natural beauty, historic landmarks and attractions for all the family, Dorset offers an enchanting escape from the hustle and bustle. Here are just a few of the county’s top sights:

Jurassic Coast

Dorset's coastline needs to be seen to be believed and the jewel in the crown is undoubtedly the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Spanning 95 miles, this awe-inspiring stretch reveals 185 million years of Earth's history through dramatic cliffs, rock formations, and fossils. A visit to Durdle Door (pictured above), a natural limestone arch jutting out of the sea, is a must. The young and young at heart will enjoy a trip to Lyme Regis, an area famous for its fossil hunting opportunities.

Corfe Castle

Step back in time with a visit to these fairytale ruins, a survivor of the English Civil War. Perched atop a hill, this iconic fortress offers spellbinding views of the surrounding Purbeck countryside. Explore the history of Corfe Castle as a royal palace and fortress at the visitor center before climbing the battlements for panoramic vistas. During the summer, the castle hosts medieval reenactments, bringing the past to life and captivating visitors of all ages.

Swanage Railway

Train enthusiasts and history lovers will enjoy a nostalgic trip aboard the Swanage Railway. This beautifully restored steam locomotive chugs its way through some of Dorset's most scenic landscapes. The journey takes you from the seaside town of Swanage to the quaint village of Corfe Castle, allowing you to experience the timeless charm of traditional railway travel.

The Cerne Abbas Giant Venture into the countryside near the village of Cerne Abbas to witness the enigmatic Cerne Abbas Giant. Carved into the chalk hillside, this colossal figure depicts a naked man wielding a club and measures an impressive 180 feet in height.

The origins and purpose of this ancient artwork remain shrouded in mystery, adding an air of intrigue to this fascinating sight.

Lulworth Cove

Another coastal gem, this pictureperfect horseshoe-shaped bay boasts turquoise waters and pebbled shores. Whether you prefer leisurely strolls along the beach or challenging coastal hikes, Lulworth Cove is the place to be, with direct access to the South West Coast Path. Low tide reveals rock pools teeming with sea creatures – great for exploring with children.

Dippy the Diplodocus

For a blend of history and paleontology, head to the Dorset County Museum in Dorchester. The main attraction here is Dippy the Diplodocus, a 70-foot-long dinosaur replica that will amaze both children and adults alike. The museum's extensive collection also includes archaeological artifacts and geological wonders, providing a fascinating insight into Dorset's rich heritage.
