January 2024: • Maximum temp: 13.4C (56F) on the 23rd compared with 13.4C (56F) in January 2023.

• Minimum temp: -3.9C (25F) on the 17th compared with -4.5C (24F) in January 2023.

• Average maximum temp: 7.53C (45F) in 2024. 8.21C (46F) in 2023. 7.20C (44F) on average.

• Average minimum temp: 2.25C (35F) in 2024. 2.01C (35F) in 2023. 2.30C (35F) on average.

• Mean temp: 4.89C (40F) in 2024. 5.11C (41F) in 2023.

4.75C (40F) on average.

• Air frosts: 7 compared with 9 in January 2023.

• Rainfall total: 2.78" compared with 1.88" in January 2023.

(30-year average (1981-2010) 2.22"). (2024 total: 125% of average).

• Most rainfall on one day: 1.15" on the 4th.

• Wind direction (mainly from): south-west 12 days, north-west 6 days, north 3 days, south 3 days and west 3 days.

January 2024 overall was a month of three distinct phases.

Overall temperature near average but rainfall was above normal. As ever, this does not tell the whole story.

1st to 5th: With winds generally dominant from the south-west, these first 5 days of January were mild by day and night, but exceptionally wet. The 2.27 inches accumulated actually exceeded the whole month long-term average and represented 81% of this month's total. Air frost was easily avoided.

The 1.15 inch daily total recorded on the 4th was the wettest January day since 09/01/1992 and also the fifth "one inch plus" day since July 2023. For this part of the country an extraordinary statistic.

6th to 20th: A general switch in wind direction into the north-west to north-east as expected at this time of year, brought a spell of cold but mainly settled conditions. High pressure built to block the "conveyor" of weather fronts and depressions from the Atlantic, which we have been so used to during the autumn and winter season so far.

Maximum daytime temperatures ranged from only 2.3C to 6.3C during these 15 days. Minimum night time temperatures were generally close to or below freezing. All 7 air frosts, 6 on consecutive nights (14th to 19th) and 10 of the 11 ground frosts were recorded within this period.

A dusting from a snow shower which fell during less than an hour on the 18th, laid on the grass until the marginal improvement in temperature on the 20th. This was the second cold spell of the winter so far following the chilly first week of December.

21st to 31st: A return of south to southwesterly winds meant milder, but thankfully, not soggy conditions continued until the end of the month. The 3 mildest days (13.0C on 21st, 13.4C on 23rd and 12.5C on 25th) and 7 of the 10 to reach or exceed 10C were noted in this period. 8.0C minimum temperature overnight 29th/30th was the mildest of the month. Being quite out of character compared to the middle 2 weeks described above.

The 2.78" rainfall total made this the wettest January since 2021. It also continued a succession of wetter than average months, which made it the 7th consecutive commencing July 2023. From July 1st, 26.47" of rain has fallen, higher than long term yearly average for the town.

The view homes, which will include window dressings, light fittings, mirrors and pictures, will comprise a 2-bedroom semi-detached Henbury and a three-bedroom Newbury.

Henham Steam Rally donates to local good causes Beccles Choral Society to join Phoenix Singers for epic Snape Maltings performance Beccles Choral Society is once again working towards an epic performance at Snape Maltings in May. This wonderful local choir will be joining with the Phoenix Singers from Woodbridge to perform a Ralph Vaughan Williams programme featuring The Sea Symphony, Old Hundredth and his Five Mystical

Songs.

This is the third time the two choirs have joined together for a concert in Snape's Concert Hall and they will once again be joined by the mighty Lambeth Orchestra.

The choirs, orchestra, soloists (Camilla Saba Davies and James Oldfield) and their conductor Geoff Lavery are very excited to

be preparing for this wonderful occasion. We are very fortunate to have this iconic performance venue in our area and you are encouraged to book tickets early to secure the seats of your choice.

Following a successful event in 2023, the organisers of the Grand Henham Steam Rally have been able to provide £44,000 for six local charities.

Held in September at Henham Park near Southwold, the Grand Henham Steam Rally is organised by volunteers from Blyth Valley Rotary, Wangford Community Council, the Parochial Church Councils of Sotherton, Uggeshall and Wangford-cum-Henham and many other individual volunteers.

In exchange for the three

organisations' huge number of volunteers throughout the year and their work, they were provided with a total of £33,000.

Every year, the rally committee also chooses several additional local charities to support, and in 2023 these were the Pear Tree Fund in Halesworth, Sole Bay Care Fund and Beccles Army Cadets.

At an event in January, the rally organisers presented these three nominated charities with donations totalling more than £11,000 and heard from

representatives from each organisation about how their work is benefitting local people. The event was also an opportunity to thank the many volunteers who give up their time throughout the year to make the rally possible.

Chair, Helen Walker said: "Our 47th rally was another successful event, and we were pleased to see so many visitors and exhibitors enjoying their weekend. From its earliest days, the rally's main aim has been to raise money to support local

good causes and we are delighted to still be able to do this. As always, I would like to thank our committee and volunteers who work so hard behind the scenes throughout the year to make the rally as successful as possible.

We are already working on the 48th rally, which takes place on 21 and 22 September at Henham Park and we look forward to seeing everyone there."

INK Festival returns!

70 new original plays, diverse performances and more!

The eighth annual INK Festival takes place from April 11th to 14th in Halesworth.

The festival will expand further across the town, creating more original performance spaces, and showcasing 70 new short plays for both stage and radio. These plays are chosen from nearly a thousand submissions reflecting the talent of both new as well as experienced writers, many from our region.

What sets the INK Festival apart is that every play is selected, cast and produced by INK. These original plays are all under 20 minutes. Each entry is read at least five times before a short list is

formed. Directors then make their choices from this selection. INK casts the plays from auditions in Suffolk and London bringing together a team of more than 60 professional theatre practitioners.

This year, the diverse submission categories include: A Play on a Bus, Planet INK, Cock Ups, Treasure and Radio Comedy creating a wide variety of relevant, entertaining and thought-provoking plays.

There are also a number of five-minute plays from some very special supporters, The INKredibles: John Boyne, Jon Canter, Christopher Douglas, Jan Etherington and Rachel Joyce.

Beyond the plays, the festival boasts an exciting line-up of stand-up comedy, art, poetry, music, children's programmes, fascinating talks including Juliet Stevenson, workshops, short new films and much more.

Sunday Funday (April 14th) transforms the Market Square with street performers, music, stalls and food, an ideal free event for families to enjoy.

Luke Wright has curated a stunning line up of performance poets featuring James McDermott, Alice D'Lumiere, Martin Figura, Kate Fox and Elvis Mc Gonagall. Luke himself showcases his new show Joy on

Saturday April 13th. There will be workshops to help you write better scripts, better comedy and better poetry and special guests to enlighten you!

All these events are covered by the day ticket, priced from £25 for adults. Day tickets for students (16-25yrs) are just £10. A carer ticket is also available for free.

Bramfield, Ringsfield and Brampton Primary Schools activities At Ringsfield, Bramfield and Brampton Primary Schools, the children have been finding out about the celebration 'Chinese New Year' and discovered that it is the year of the dragon.

We learnt that it is also known as the Lunar New Year and the exact date changes each year as it is linked to the start of a new moon. The celebration is 15 days long. Families and friends get together to eat lots of yummy food, enjoy fireworks, and wear special clothes to mark the occasion. Lots of red is worn because it is seen as a lucky colour.

At Ringsfield, the Reception and Nursery children did lots of craft activities, cooked and tasted some egg fried rice and made a dragon for dancing. The children also enjoyed role playing together as a family, celebrating Chinese New Year in their home.

At Bramfield, we created a giant lion-head puppet and took it in turns to lead a procession, copying the traditional lion dance performers we had seen. We shimmied and bobbed our way around the school hall while our friends accompanied us with drums and symbols.

At Brampton, we made some lucky red envelopes and the children put a coin in to share with their family.

We also made a dragon and created our own dragon dance outside on the playground.

Bungay Primary School A group of our wonderful children took part in the most amazing opportunity to sing in the 'Young Voices' choir at the O2 Arena in London this month.

Our group, as part of the wider ASSET Education choir, joined others and brought together a choir of up to 9,000 other school-aged children!

From the dedication to practising to the journey that started shortly after 7am and took until past midnight, we couldn't be any more proud of everyone that took part!

Southwold Rugby Club update It has been a great first half of the season with lots of rugby being played on Southwold Common across all age groups.

The first team are currently sitting in 4th position in their league (London and SE Division Counties 1 Eastern), the team are developing well under Head Coach, Mark Grigg producing

some great team performances over the last few games.

The second team have a mixture of youth and experience and despite their league being reorganised resulting in very few fixtures, they have managed to secure several friendly games and are developing well as a team.

The ladies team have a lot of new players who are just starting to find their feet and this bodes well for the future.

In their league they are sitting just below middle of the table having won three and lost five.

The junior sections have enjoyed some great rugby with the youth and colts groups

starting their Eastern Counties Cup competitions and the minis looking forward to the up coming festivals.

Halesworth Pumas Cricket Club looking for new recruits!

For nearly 20 years, the pumas have played pub-level cricket against pretty much all corners. Ranging from local "rivals" at Saxmundham, Topcroft, Gillingham, Yoxford and many more to touring sides such as Reigate, Cambridge and London Rams.

Pub cricket is a strictly friendly, strictly fun exercise, and although many league teams do represent in the format, there is no title to

be won and no pressure on results.

The only real pressure is making sure you get your hands on a sandwich at the pub afterwards!

Pumas welcome all comers, at all levels of ability, as long as you can play with a smile on your face and are willing to join in the good natured nonsense, (the jacket of shame gets passed around for misfields and silly things) you are welcome.

The games generally take place

on midweek evenings with home games taking place at Rumburgh (and post match at the Rumburgh Buck). This year, we're seeking some keen and willing recruits to help with pitch maintenance as our grounds team are in need of support. We look forward to seeing you!

Wenhaston Bowls Club's growing trophy cabinet!

As previously reported, Wenhaston Bowls Club was very successful over the 2023 season, with even more trophies being added to our growing collection. This comes after Chris Peck led the team to victory in the Lowestoft and District league for the sixth year in a row, with wife, Elaine Peck leading the Wenhaston team to victory in the Halesworth three-wood league for the second year in a row.

Recently elected Chairperson, Jen Daly said "Everyone at our

club loves playing the sport and although winning isn't everything it's great to have a cabinet that shows the hard work our captains and players put in. We are all raring to go and waiting for the season to kick off later in the spring to see what 2024 has in store, hopefully we will end the season needing a bigger cabinet and some more shelves."

Bungay Community Support expanding their reach

Calling all poets! ...or anyone who enjoys putting pen to paper!

So many people in our community are disappointed at the apparent lack of awareness by energy providers with regard to the impact their proposed plans could have on our communities.

The potential for damage to the coast between Aldeburgh and Thorpeness and inland over a large swathe of our county, means not only loss of wildlife and their habitats, but a detrimental impact on the quality of life for residents, businesses and tourism for years to come.

Many of you will know of Suffolk Energy Action Solutions (SEAS) opposition to these plans and seen their support for alternative solutions involving keeping most wind and energy infrastructure offshore, taking power via subsea cabling closer to where it is needed and connecting to the grid onshore at brownfield sites.

Here is an opportunity for an alternative protest which SEAS is supporting. We'd love you to write a poem. The poem you write might tell of the possible impact the onshore energy proposals could have on our landscape, our health, our community or our wildlife, taking care not to berate any political party or individual as

SEAS will be unable to publish them. So do please start writing, keeping your poem to an A4 size sheet with minimum font size of 12 but preferably larger. You may submit more than one poem.

SEAS will select and publish a poem a day on social media which will be circulated to many people in the area and beyond. Each poem will have the copyright symbol added and be attributed to you as poet. You may find it helpful to sign up to the SEAS newsletter so you can follow the selected poems on their Facebook and Instagram pages. Send your poems to SEAS via the following email: withonevoicepoetrychallenge@ gmail.com and include your name and your email address.

Submissions open until April 30th.

It could have further impact to have the poems displayed throughout the area. Poems may start to appear on display from mid-February so do have a go.

Measles vaccination plea from Dr. Dan Poulter, MP As an NHS hospital doctor who has worked in some of the biggest and best London Hospitals throughout my medical career, I am only too familiar with the signs and symptoms of Measles.

Measles is an illness with unpleasant and sometimes lifethreatening complications; a virus that Britain had hoped to eradicate through a vaccination programme delivering herd immunity, but unfortunately, parents failing to vaccinate their children has resulted in a loss of herd immunity and a recent surge in Measles cases.

Until recently, herd immunity had meant that cases of Measles had been isolated to small outbreaks in London and the big cities. However, the loss of herd immunity means that we are now seeing a surge of cases throughout the UK. Herd immunity is where the spread of an infectious disease within a population is prevented by the pre-existing immunity of a high proportion of people within

that population. In Britain, herd immunity against Measles had, in the past, been conveyed by an effective vaccination program, which in recent years meant a two-dose course of the MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) triple vaccine administered before a child's fifth birthday.

The MMR vaccine is routinely offered by health visitors and GPs. Herd immunity against Measles is achieved when 95% or more of the population have gained immunity. But in parts of London and Birmingham, less than 70% of the population have completed the MMR vaccination course by their fifth birthday. In Suffolk, the picture is better, with 89.1% of children being fully vaccinated by their 5th birthday but this is insufficient to convey herd immunity, and means that over 1 in 10 children in our county are not fully protected against the Measles virus.

Measles is not an illness to be dismissed lightly. It is highly contagious with an R rate (or

reproduction rate) of between 15 and 16. When compared to the R rate of the first strain of Covid19 of between two and three, it is clear that Measles spreads easily and quickly in the unvaccinated. The school classroom is particularly fertile territory for the Measles virus to spread.

The reason why vaccination against Measles is so important is because it can result in serious and life-threatening complications including pneumonia, meningitis, blindness and seizures. In pregnancy, Measles can cause miscarriage, still birth and premature labour.

The task now is to restore herd immunity against Measles. If you or your child or grandchild has not completed the MMR vaccination course, then please book an appointment with your GP. It may just save a child's life.

You are invited to join with the combined Churches in Aldeburgh for The World Day Of Prayer (WDP) 2024 on March 1st at 11am at The Fairfield Centre, Aldeburgh followed by free soup and roll lunch.

Everyone is very welcome.

The WDP Service takes place on the first Friday in March each year. On that day, people all around the world will be praying for one country. The country this year is Palestine, and the theme is "Bearing with one another in love". We will be joining with people across 146 countries and islands to pray with and for the people of Palestine.

Future themes will include:

for the period January-23 to March-24, a 15-month period, to be reported on, and taxed in, the 2023/24 tax year. Clearly this would result in a higher tax liability than the usual 12-month period.

If the taxpayer has any Overlap Profits (these arise at the commencement of a trade where accounts are drawn up to a date other than the end of a tax year and can result in an element of profits being taxed twice), these can be deducted from profits in the 2023/24 transitional year.

In addition, taxpayers have the option to spread any additional transitional profits over up to five tax years. For example, if Mrs Smith generates steady profits of £20,000 per year, a 15-month period to March-24 would create £25,000 of profits. If she has £1,000 of overlap profits, the excess taxable profit is now £4,000. Spreading this over five years would mean an additional £800 taxed in each of the years 2023/24 to 2027/28.

However, businesses won't always have full control over their reporting date, which may be fixed for a variety of reasons, and may have to apportion figures each year. If actual figures for the

Are you aware of the recent changes to how sole-traders and partners are taxed on their profits?

Prior to 6th April 2023, unincorporated businesses could choose an annual reporting date and draw up accounts to that date every year. The profits from those accounts were taxed depending on the tax year in which the final day of the year falls. For example, Mrs Smith draws up accounts to 31st December each year, her profits for the year to December 2022 were taxed on the 2022/23 return.

From 2023/24, HMRC changed these fundamental rules so that sole-traders and partnerships must instead report profits relating specifically to the tax year running 6th April to the following 5th April (or 1st April to 31st March).

To facilitate this, businesses have two options; change their accounting year end to the tax year end or retain their current accounting date and apportion figures from two sets of accounting years into one tax return.

A fresh start for The Dove Inn It's now a little over six months since Sonya Remblance re-opened the Dove Inn, Alburgh and this lovely old building is enjoying a new lease of life.

Following two months of refurbishment, Sonya opened the doors 12th July 2023 and has not looked back since.

The Dove Inn is ideally located on the A143 between Harleston and Bungay so is within easy reach of these towns as well as Beccles and Halesworth, and there are plenty of reasons why you may want to pay a visit.

Having completed the extensive refurbishment, Sonya and her team re-opened the Dove Inn as a café, restaurant and bar. The

building is beautifully decorated to create a cosy home from home.

On entering, you will see the café and bar area to the right and the gorgeous lounge area to the left.

The café is open 10am to 3pm Monday to Friday and 9:30am to 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays, though these times will change as we move into the lighter and warmer months. On Friday and Saturday evenings, the café becomes a social bar area and is open from 6pm to 8pm with the menu changing from breakfast and lunch offerings to an evening restaurant service.

Fresh, local, seasonal and homemade food is the running theme here.

At the Dove Inn, you will find all your favourite breakfast options which are served all day. Then for lunch, you might choose a homemade soup, freshly-made sandwich or perhaps the hot meal

which will change seasonally and might include a hotpot or sausage casserole whilst we are still in the cooler months.

Or, if you just fancy coffee and cake, you will not be disappointed by the tempting selection of cakes and bakes.

Of course, Sunday lunches feature the classic Sunday roast, but Sonya is quick to explain that people can order what they like and if you fancy a full English breakfast whilst the rest of your party are tucking in to a roast, then so be it!

Sonya is able to cater for any dietary requirements and tastes and is happy to open early or late to cater for functions, meetings and parties. That is a good point, the large restaurant can comfortably seat 60 and in summer, The Dove could cater for up to 250 guests by making use of the stunning outside space over-looking the beautiful meadows to the rear of the building. This is all comfortably managed by the large and well-equipped kitchen.

You will also find accommodation on site here, hence the home-from-home feel.

There are two double/twin rooms each with en-suite, and a self-contained twobedroom flat with kitchen and bathroom.

The accommodation is all dog-friendly as is the café/bar area. However, dogs are not allowed in the lounge area.

The Dove is quickly becoming a

community destination with plenty of interesting events happening on a regular basis such as meet-up Monday's, a monthly acoustic evening, ukulele workshop, bingo, tarot reading, live music and much more.

The next big date is Mother's Day which will include music from an ABBA tribute act on Saturday night followed by a special Mother's Day menu on March 10th.

Spring into Summer with the Royal Horticultural Society March brings some sunny days to tempt gardeners back into the garden and many of us are really aching for Spring now.

This is the month for sowing seeds and getting the garden ready for the summer months ahead.

It's also the perfect time for a mini makeover project and creating a sunny wildflower border is something that even the most novice gardener can take on. Wildflowers are easy to grow and a sunny border will attract pollinators and birds. The smallest area can look attractive and benefit wildlife, so don't overlook that tiny patch of lawn

that is never used, or pots on the patio that could do with a new look.

Keep in mind that wildflowers do not like too rich a compost they prefer poor soil with few nutrients. Make sure you read the seed packet to find out how much seed to sow for the size of your plot and, as wild flower seeds can be on the small side, mix them with a bit of sand as it makes distributing them easier.

Once scattered water gently and keep the soil damp until the seeds have germinated.

Having taken on the business in 2014, this year sees Simon and Mary Sparrow celebrate 10 years at Hippersons Boatyard.

Over time, the business has evolved to reflect the changing needs of the people who use or visit the river.

There are several sides to this business including boat building and repairs, moorings, dayboat and canoe hire, and holiday accommodation.

Those who own a boat will know the importance of good maintenance. Hippersons have you covered with a workshop team of Stephen and Josh covering all aspects of boat building and marine engineering.

When you're not using your boat, you will need somewhere to moor or store your vessel and Hippersons have a range of moorings available for craft up to 40 feet. There's also plenty of winter storage on site so this really is a one-stop shop for boat owners in the area.

Of course, most people who

use the river will not be boat owners, here at Hippersons, Mary and Simon want to share the beauty of the river with as may people as possible.

To that end they have six selfcatering holiday options with three houseboats, two floating glamping pods and the most recent addition, the Secret Garden which is on land and nestled in its own private garden space complete with fire pit and wood-fired hot tub.

The accommodation has become a major part of this business and the team have recently been awarded the Visit England Gold Award, this is for offering a consistently high quality of accommodation and is something Mary and Simon are rightly very proud of. This is further backed up by superb reviews and ratings on Tripadvisor, Google and social media.

When people make a booking, Mary sends out a pack with lots of information and details about

their stay. Part of this offering is the recently developed Hippersons app which is free to download and includes all sorts of information, including suggestions for places to eat, things to do and wildlife you might spot on the river. All accommodation comes with a private rowing boat for use during your stay so get out and explore! As we move into spring and summer, residents and tourists alike are starting to think about things to do and days out with family and friends. As a starting point, why not consider hiring a boat? Booked in advance, these are available for the full day from 9:15am to 4:30pm, or as a short day in April and October only from 11am to 3pm. They are simple to operate and give you great freedom to explore

the river. Most of the boats are electric which makes for a quiet and smooth journey. All dayboats undergo a thorough winter service and are fully charged/ fuelled with all safety equipment and instructions provided on arrival.

Those who prefer a more active way of exploring are sure to enjoy the kayaks, canoes and paddleboarding. Choose to hire and go out on your own, or take up to option to have a guided tour with Stephen who can give you tips on your paddling technique whilst pointing out

any interesting landmarks and wildlife you may come across along the way.

"Plan for living with flooding urgently needed" says Green party leader Adrian Ramsay (Green Party co-leader and MP candidate for the Waveney Valley constituency) visited a flood-hit community pub at Geldeston near Beccles on January 20th to call attention to the need for a Government plan to cope with extreme rain and flooding.

Adrian said: "It's heartbreaking to see the efforts people make to create a social and cultural hub devastated by extreme weather. Since late October, the community owned Locks Inn at Geldeston has had to be closed more often than it's open. While the Locks Inn gets more visitors in the summer, by having many events in the winter months it has until this winter been able to keep a sense of community going for nearby residents. But continual flooding this year has made that nearly impossible with many really fantastic events having to be cancelled. This really

The report by the Public Accounts Committee said that a shortfall in government funding for the Environment

Agency meant that some of its defences were not being properly maintained and that as a result 203,000 English homes were at an increased risk of flooding.

The MPs noted that housing developments continue to be built on flood plains saying it was "unforgivable" when it was happening without mitigation and they called for a new approach to flood management.
