The 2015 Riverway Speaker Series a collaboration of the National Park Service and St. Croix River Association, concludes on Sat. April 11 at 10 a.m. with a program on monarch butterflies, “Dwindling Numbers for an Iconic Insect: Challenges and Hope for Monarch Butterflies.” University of Minnesota professor Dr. Karen Oberhauser will speak about the biology of migratory monarch populations and the work of citizens and scientists in documenting monarch numbers at all stages of their migratory cycle. Monarchs are negatively impacted by many human activities, and their populations have been declining over the
last 20 years. Dr. Oberhauser will discuss threats to monarchs and potential responses to those threats, focusing on positive changes as well as on the challenges posed by a problem with multiple causes. The presentation is free and open to the public. It will take place at the St. Croix River Association office, 230 South Washington Street, Unit 1, in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin (next to the St. Croix Falls Public Library). Space is limited and reservations strongly encouraged. RSVPs will be honored until 10 a.m. To reserve a space, go to www.stcroixriverassociation.org or call (715) 483-3300.
