Conversations of the Valley The Mississippi River, along with major tributaries such as the St. Croix River, provide the vital habitat corridor for millions of our continent's birds for breeding and while on migration. This seasonal pulse of life connects the St. Croix Valley to tropical America and the Arctic. While great challenges such as deforestation and global warming dramatically affect birds in those environments, on Earth Day we will examine in more depth the opportunities we have along

the Mississippi flyway to support birds and other wildlife and the human communities that depend upon them. Guest speaker Don Arnosti is a conservation advocate with extensive experience in Minnesota and the Upper Mississippi River region over the past 25 years. He has trained and organized their memberships to speak effectively for renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and the protection of wetlands and watersheds.

it with nature and benefitting it,” he said, “trying to promote the natural environment itself … and looking at the long term.” Otey Wold assured the board that hunting would not be part of the plan. Board members — who have been concerned with what will happen to the land — seemed encouraged by the organization’s proposal. “This would be a great outcome for acres we’ve been worried about off and on for sometime,” said Supervisor John Pazlar. “It’s a big chunk of property and an important piece for the town,” said Board Chair Bill Voedisch. The board gave written, nonfinancial support of the 600-acre purchase, noting that if the organization’s plans changed significantly, that approval might be rescinded. The MFA will put together a general concept proposal for May 11. Between May and September it will generate a more detailed plan for management and educational programming.

Glories of May

May resident Laurie Allmann proposed an annual community event, tentatively titled “The Glories of May.” The event would offer a non-competitive opportunity for locals to submit photos of May during the month of May, for potential display on the township’s website and at the town hall. The board gave the go ahead. More information to come.

Arcola Mills

The board discussed permitted uses at Arcola Mills, which appears to be hosting an increasing number of weddings. The board concluded that the historic site and educational retreat center is operating outside the bounds of its conditional use permit, and a board representative will bring the matter up for discussion with the site’s staff.

Other business:

The board voted to nominate Wade Johnson to replace Victoria (Tori) Dupre as a district manager for the Carnelian-Marine-St. Croix Watershed District. James Brockberg proposed that the township pave a portion of Panorama Ave. N. to reduce potholes and gravel slurry. He and the board agreed to try alternative options.
