The latest ‘Walk with the Mayors’ event hosted by Coos Bay and North Bend city leaders attracted a large group of supporters rallying around a common cause of mental health and recovery.

The monthly walks were formed to create a unique opportunity for connection, conversation and a shared appreciation for both of the cities.

About one hundred community members came together to join the second-ever event with Coos Bay Mayor Joe Benetti and North Bend Mayor Jessica Engelke,

Bandon Chamber hosts “Jingle and Mingle”

With fallen leaves clogging your gutters, frost on the windshield and Holiday Lights blazing, we begin thinking about the New Year. At the chamber, we begin our preparation for 2024’s opportunities and successes with the annual board planning session.

For the past several years we have used your input about what you see are the most important issues facing our community, how you think the Chamber has been dealing with them and what you would like to have us address in the next year.

Oregon State University scientists have learned that some coral species are becoming resilient to heat waves by remembering how the lived through previous ones.

Some coral species can be resilient to marine heat waves by “remembering” how they lived through previous ones, research by Oregon State University scientists suggests.

The study, funded by the National Science Foundation, also contains evidence that the ecological memory response is likely linked to the microbial communities that dwell among the corals.

The findings, published today in Global Change Biology, are important because coral reefs, crucial to the functioning of planet Earth, are in decline from a range of human pressures including climate change, said the study’s lead author, Alex Vompe.

“It is vital to understand how quickly reefs can adapt to ever more frequent, repeated disturbances such as marine heat waves,” said Vompe, a doctoral student who works in the lab of microbiology professor Rebecca Vega Thurber. “The microbiomes living within their coral hosts might be a key component of rapid adaptation.”

Heat waves are likely to increase in frequency and severity because of climate change, he added. Slowing down the rate of coral cover and species loss is a major conservation goal, and

predicting and engineering heat tolerance are two important tools.

Knowing the role microbes play in adaptation can inform coral gardening and planting efforts, Vompe said. A deeper understanding of the microbial processes, and the organisms responsible for ecological memory, can also aid in developing probiotics and/or monitoring protocols to assess and act on the quality of ecological memory of individual coral colonies.

Coral reefs are found in less than 1% of the ocean but are home to nearly one-quarter of all known marine species.

They also help regulate the sea’s carbon dioxide

levels and are a crucial source for scientists searching for new medicines.

Corals are made up of interconnected animal hosts called polyps that house microscopic algae inside their cells.

Corals also house functionally and taxonomically diverse bacteria, viruses, archaea and microeukaryotes. The community of bacteria and archaea living within corals are referred to as the coral microbiome.

Symbiosis is the foundation of the coral reef ecosystem as these microbes benefit coral hosts by assisting in carbon, nitrogen and sulfur cycling, essential vitamin supplementa-

tion, and protection against pathogens. The coral polyps in turn provide nutrition and protection to the algae and bacteria.

Climate change is threatening coral reefs in part because some of the relationships between coral and their microbes can be stressed by warming oceans to the point of dissolution – a collapse of the host-microbe partnerships, which results in a phenomenon known as coral bleaching.

“But Acropora retusa, a prevalent coral species

in the Mo’orean coral reef that we studied, appears to have a powerful ecological memory response to heat waves that the microbiome seems to play a role in,” Vompe said. “This means some coral species may be more resilient to climate change than previously thought.”

Vompe, Vega Thurber and colleagues at OSU, the University of California, Santa Barbara, Arizona State University, and the University of Essex spent five years studying 200 coral colonies at a reef on the

north shore of Mo’orea, French Polynesia.

Mo’orea is an island in the South Pacific, roughly halfway between Australia and South America.

Because of the reef’s recent history, it presented a unique opportunity to examine heat wave response, the researchers said.

In 2010, crown-ofthorns starfish and a cyclone destroyed more than 99% of the corals, effectively hitting the reset button on the reef.

Corals reestablished and went through comparatively minor heat wave events in 2016 and 2017 before experiencing the area’s most severe marine heat wave in recorded history between December 2018 and July 2019.

The second-most severe heat wave soon followed, between February and July of 2020.

“We observed that some species of coral seem to remember exposure to past marine heat waves and maintain a higher level of health in subsequent heat waves,” Vega Thurber said. “And Acropora retusa’s memory response was strongly linked to changes in its microbiome, supporting the idea that the microbial

Cauliflower corals in the genus Pocillopora stayed in good health through the heat events, and their microbiomes also showed an ecological memory response, she noted.

They were perturbed by the initial 2019 heat wave but recovered to their predisturbance state despite the second heat wave in 2020.

“Members of coral microbial communities have unique biological features that make them more adaptable and responsive to environmental change – short generation cycles, large population sizes and diverse metabolic potential,” Vega Thurber said.

“In two of the three coral species we focused on, we identified initial microbiome resilience, host

and microbiome acclimatization, or developed microbiome resistance to repeated heat stress.

The latter two patterns are consistent with the concept of ecological memory.”

Other Oregon State researchers involved the research were Thomas Sharpton, Hannah Epstein and Emily Schmeltzer. Sharpton is an associate professor of microbiology and statistics; Epstein was a postdoctoral researcher during the study and is now a lecturer at the University of Essex; Schmeltzer, a doctoral student in Vega Thurber’s lab, has graduated and is working as a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

Walk with the Mayors continued from page 1

Edwards, aka ‘A Walking Testimony,’ has been spending time in the local community along his journey to walk to all four corners of the United States to bring awareness to mental health and addiction recovery.

He has already walked his way from Jacksonville, Florida to Washington State and is now heading down to Sand Diego, making stops along the Oregon Coast.

North Bend Mayor Jessica Engelke introduced Edwards to the group that gathered

before the walk at the North Bend Library.

“Mayor Benetti and I heard about his story and that he has some very specific messages, that you matter, that recovery is possible, as well as overall mental health awareness. That's something that we will for sure support and

want to bring awareness to,” Mayor Engelke said.

The walk ended with a community conversation at the library. Edwards plans to resume his walk across America after visiting his family in Florida for the holidays. It will be his first time back home since he began his walk about 2 years ago.

This 8-week lecture series “Stories behind the Names: South Coast Geography”, will take place every Monday evening at 6:30 pm-7:30 pm from January 8th-February 26, 2024. Join Steve Greif on Monday evenings at the Coos History Museum for a deep dive into the interesting origins of local place names in Coos County. The course will offer a look at local history centered on geographic themes and the stories behind local place names.

About our presenter: Steve Greif is a retired North Bend High School teacher that has written a history of

North Bend High as well as a two-volume U.S. History text for students. He is a volunteer at the Coos History Museum and is extremely knowledgeable on local history topics. This program will be hosted in-person at the Coos History Museum with an admission price of $75 for CHM Members and $80 for the general public. This price covers the entire course of eight sessions. All proceeds support the Coos History Museum’s Annual Fund.

Thomas Frank Stamper March 14, 1934 – December 02, 2023

Thomas Frank Stamper, 89, of North Bend, Oregon, died on December 2, 2023, at Bay Area Hospital.

Many will remember him as the owner of Stamper’s Tire Co., the local Les Schwab dealer, as a generous supporter of the Bay Area community, and as a husband, father and friend.

Tom was born to Florence and Jack Stamper on March 14, 1934, in Seattle, Washington. They had moved from Coos Bay to live with Florence’s family and find work during the Great Depression.

Shortly after his birth, the family moved back to Coos Bay. Jack reopened his tire store, which he had established in 1923.

Tom graduated from Marshfield High School in 1952, and headed to University of Oregon, where he was a Sigma Chi and manager of the men’s basketball team, graduating in 1956 with a BS in business.

Tom served two years in the Army, stationed in Germany.

He took every opportunity to explore as much of Europe as he could. This ignited

his life-long passion for travel. Following his service, he returned to UO to take accounting classes. When standing in for someone else on a blind date, he met his future wife, Joan Long.

They married June 12, 1960, and settled in Portland. Tom spent two years working at Price Waterhouse as a CPA, saving Joan’s salary and living on his so they could quit their jobs in 1962 and travel through Europe for three months.

They moved to Coos Bay following their European adventure and Tom joined his older brother, Charles “Chuck” Stamper, running the tire stores in Coos Bay and Coquille. Tragically, Chuck died in a small plane crash in 1963, leaving Tom alone at the helm of the stores.

He grew the business over the years, adding stores in Reedsport, North Bend, Brookings, and Crescent City, California. In the early ‘70s, he met Central Oregon tire dealer Les Schwab. Schwab became a mentor, and that partnership changed the course of the company and of Tom’s life. The

Les Schwab business model, philosophy of customer service and employee loyalty aligned with Tom’s principles and values and allowed the business to prosper.

Tom shared his Les Schwab Story with friends through Rotary Club, as a teacher at Oregon Business Week, and with classes at S.W.O.C.C., thinking that others could benefit from his experiences.

Tom and Joan believed in giving back to the communities that made the business successful. They gave generously, usually without fanfare, often under The Stamper Family moniker. They established a trust for the Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon, supported Bay Area Hospital, the Coos Art Museum and The Devereux Center, helped the Coos History Museum build a new facility, set up a fund with the Oregon Community Foundation to give grants to nonprofits throughout Coos and Curry counties, and countless other philanthropic endeavors.

Phyllis Clairann Friese passed away with her family by her side on November 22, 2023, at the age of 83.

Phyllis was born on July 12, 1940, in Reedsport, Oregon. She is the daughter of Fred and Berniece Bates, the sister of Sharon Scott of

(Trey) Robynn and Rachael. She was also blessed with 6 great grandchildren, Kaylee, Devyn, Richard, Ava, Tenley, and Jaxson.

She was married to Gerald Friese on December 31, 1959, in Roseburg, Oregon.

Phyllis was a devoted homemaker, and enjoyed cooking, sewing, scrapbooks, and gardening. She was deeply loved and appreciated by many.

Memorial Service will be held at Dunes Memorial Chapel on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 1:00 pm in Reedsport Oregon.

The Family welcomes donations to South coast Hospice as an expression of sympathy rather than flowers.

nesters, Tom and Joan began cycling and took bicycle tours each fall for 20 years, traveling to all parts of the U.S., Canada and Europe with their bike shoes and helmets.

After Tom retired in 2000, they began spending winters in La Quinta, California, and summers in Sunriver.

While dementia took away a lifetime of memories at the end of his life, it did not diminish who he was. Tom was a kind, honest, generous man who loved his family and friends, and was, according to his wife, “the best man ever born.” He was a gentleman and also a truly gentle man.

Tom is survived by his wife, Joan Stamper of North Bend; daughters, Dana Jackson of Allyn, Washington, her husband, Ted Jackson, and Linda Stamper Boyne of Edwards, Colorado; grandchildren, Nick Boyne, Megan Jackson, Tom Boyne and Ashley Jackson; nieces, JoAnne Sutherland, Julie Stamper, and Janet Holland; and nephews, Bill Stamper, Kevin Robertson and

Scott Robertson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Florence (Asp) Stamper and Jack W. Stamper; and brother, Charles “Chuck” Stamper.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 2 p.m. at the Coos History Museum, 1210 N. Front St, Coos Bay. A reception will follow. The family will have a private burial service at Sunset Memorial Park. Coos Bay Chapel, 541-2673131, is managing the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers please continue Tom’s legacy of giving by making a donation in his memory to one of the organizations he supported (listed above) or the local organization of your choice.

Joan loved Hawaii and had a second home there. She always had a great time swimming in the ocean. Enjoying the sea turtles, was her great love and brought her great joy!

Carl Clayton Linam

July 12, 1940 – November 22, 2023

Portland and proceeded in death by her brother, Micky Bates of Veneta.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Gerald “Jerry” Friese, a daughter, Cathy and son in law, Dale Bishop; and a daughter, Karin Newman. She was a loving grandmother to five grandchildren, Kara, Kevin, Jack

two daughters and built a house and a life together in North Bend. Whatever interests and hobbies he took up, he fully committed to, and the family joined in.

Whether it was sailing and racing at the Coos Bay Yacht Club, cross country skiing in the Cascades, or going to a car show or the Oregon Symphony, Tom brought along his girls. Tom was always looking to improve himself. He was a life-long student, a curious researcher, and a meticulous record keeper, chronicling every workout beginning in 1972 when he started running and every bottle of wine he bought, cellared, and shared. He took up black-and-white nature photography later in life and developed his work in the basement dark room he set up. His patience and attention to detail were on full display in every photograph.

Tom shared his love of travel with his family, planning trips to explore the western National Parks and taking them on vacations all over the country. As empty

She was loved by all and will be truly missed.

Carl was born one of 16 children to John and Edna (Swan) Linam on April 9, 1944 in Vancouver, Washington. He died peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his family December 20, 2023 in Bandon at the

age of 79.

He served in the military for four years and worked as a sprinkler fitter, a proud member of Local 669, for his entire career.

He loved fishing and hunting and was loved by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Diana; daughters, Kimberly and Kristin; grandchildren,

Alexander, Jennavieve and Benjamin; great grandchildren, Zane, Tripp and Cade; sister, Margie; and brother, Jerry.

The Fiasco of ‘Fort Blunder’

We all make mistakes.

To err is human, after all.

For example, fences are sometimes built on the wrong side of the property line. It happens.

When armies and nations make such a faux pas, war can result.

Fortunately, that didn’t happen with this tale.

Though the story does begin with a war. Two of them, in fact.

We know Canada today as a mellow place, a country famous for its politeness and good manners (along

with an odd affinity for fries topped with cheese curds and hot gravy).

But that wasn’t always the case.

When the American colonies launched the Revolutionary War, our neighbor to the north stayed loyal to England.

Twice (during the Revolution and again 37 years later in its sequel, the War of 1812), the United States invaded Canada. And twice, America retreated in defeat.

After narrowly surviving the War of 1812, President James Madison decided it was time to invest seriously in military spending. Since a fort had famously stopped the British fleet at Baltimore (giving us “The Star-Spangled Banner” in the process), the War Department set about building a string of fortifications along the Atlantic coast, many of which still stand.

An imposing fort was planned to protect America from Canada as well. Money was

authorized to build an eight-sided fortification with 30-foot stone walls and armed with 125 powerful cannons. It would be built in New York on the northern end of Lake Champlain within sight of the border with Canada.

Twice during both wars, the British had used that waterway to launch invasions of our country.

When the new fort was in place, no warship could get past it.

So, the Army set to work building the new fortress in 1816. Dozens of civilian workers and soldiers, overseen by the Corps of Engineers, commenced the mighty task.

It was so important that Madison even inspected the site in 1817. Things were progressing nicely.

Dozens of acres of woodland had been cleared, and the massive stone walls were going up.

Then it happened.

A clerk in Washington discovered a mistake. A bad mistake. A makeyour-face-turn-red and

hang-your-head-inshame mistake.

The survey that had been used to select the new fort’s site was wrong. Way wrong. It mistakenly placed the international border three-quarters of a mile to the south. Meaning the fort intended to protect us from Canada was being built — in Canada!

Madison was mortified. He ordered construction to stop, told the Army to immediately withdraw, and then apologized profusely to the Canadians, who shrugged it off with a neighborly “these things happen” response.

Washington had spent $175,000 (about $4 million today) on the project. Now, it was all wasted in a textbook example of a government boondoggle.

With the Army gone, local residents took stone and other materials to use in their houses, buildings and barns.

In a few years, the site

was picked clean. No trace of it now exists.

The fort had never been given a name.

Americans and Canadians alike eventually called the place exactly what it was: Fort Blunder.

Twenty years later, the Army built another fortification nearby. Fort Montgomery was smaller and less imposing than the original design.

By then, U.S.-Canadian relations were warming significantly. In 1909, it was abandoned. Today, it sits empty on the shores of Lake Champlain, a decaying relic

from a bygone era.

But one thing was certain: When the Army began building Fort Montgomery, you can bet they made darn sure they went to work on the right side of the border.

January 28, 1963 – November 2, 2023

With broken hearts, it’s our sad duty to announce the death of Julie “Nae Nae” Turner Jacobson. It has taken a while for us to even summon the strength to attempt to write this.

We (Joe, Davey, and Brittany) will do our best to capture just how special she was to all that had the honor of knowing her, although every word seems to fall short.

Julie was born in Portland, Oregon to Rose (Olin) and Grant Turner on January 28, 1963. She joined her older brothers, Chris and Carl, with them moving to Coos Bay in the late 60s. Her youngest brother, Michael, was brought into the world soon after the move and the family settled in and made a house near Mingus Park their home. In the early 80s, Rose got a divorce and remarried to Tom Jacobson who gracefully assumed the role of father to her and her brothers. She attended

Madison grade school, Milner Crest, MJHS (where her future step father would give her first hack, of course), and Marshfield High School. She worked at the Red Lion, owned her own daycare, and finished her career at Oregon Community Credit Union. She acquired many lifelong friends throughout her young life and was frequently the life of the party and people’s go-to friend. Her brother and best friend, Carl, was killed when she was 21.

This tragedy shaped her and she worked to honor him for the rest of her life.

Julie had two kids, Davey in the fall of 1990 and Brittany in the spring of 1993, with her first husband, David Everett Beebe. Her kids were her entire life. She made sacrifice after sacrifice for her kids and she was not only an outstanding mom but she was also their best friend. She always made it apparent they

could talk to her about anything, no matter the circumstance. She also was considered a mom by countless kids over the course of 30 years, and her house was a place of acceptance, safety, and belonging for so many.

Julie met her match and love of her life, Joe Jacobson, at an early age but it wasn’t until the year 2000 that they got reconnected and fell in love. They got married in November of 2001, with Davey as the best man and Brittany as the maid of honor.

Their love was infectious and electric. People often commented about how their love was unlike anything they had ever seen.

She frequently relayed to her kids, “It is so much fun being married to my best friend.”

Their kids remember fondly waking up in the morning and hearing them banter back and forth and laugh uncontrollably together throughout their entire

relationship. Julie wasn’t going to let just anyone into her and her kid’s lives but when she picked Joe, it felt right because it was.

There are no words to fully encapsulate the person, mom, wife, daughter, sister, and friend she was. Every single person that knew her, or even met her, was captivated by her infectious warmth, sense of humor, and unconditional compassion. People flocked to her and she was a bright spot in so many people’s lives.

She made the most monotonous parts of life entertaining and memorable. She had a strong belief in God and always strived to lead by love as an example. She wore her heart on her sleeve and always made it known how much she cared for those around her.

Julie encountered many struggles throughout her life, both seen and unseen; even so, she always found humor in

Plans for a full-scale grand opening of the Bandon Historical Society's Museum on the bottom floor of the downtown Masonic Building were reported in the May 5, 1977, Western World.

"Vice President Marge Goddard (first picture with Shannon Mueller) said the special activities will span specially guided tours for school children to a gala street dance on the Saturday evening of the opening.

A 'dancing through the years' exhibit will run from square dancing to an evening hoedown.

"Shannon Applegate Mueller noted that Ernie Osborne, Bandon nautical historian, is working closely with the society's museum committee to establish the first major museum display. 'We are very, very fortunate to have a man of Ernie's caliber so deeply involved,' said Mueller.

"The board also agreed to approach the Chamber of Commerce on the possibility of the chamber joining with the society in utilizing the museum as the official Bandon visitor's information center.

"The museum board learned that Bill Grannell, publisher of the Empire Builder newspaper, has agreed to donate a working linotype machine to the society. When combined with the small press already in the museum, the result will be a working exhibit. " 'With this handoperated printing equipment which flourished at the turn of the century, we will be able to produce our own printed materials,' noted Peter Toll, a board member."

Today the museum is located in the former city hall building at Highway 101 and Fillmore Avenue, which was donated to the museum by the City after the new city hall opened in 1970 ... 53 years ago.

The third photo was taken in October of 1983 as former chiropractor Chuck Meese drove his amphibious vehicle past a fishing boat in the local boat basin.

--------------------------Everyone is welcome to enjoy a traditional sit-down dinner with friends and neighbors on Christmas Day, Monday, Dec. 25, at the Bandon Community Center (the Barn), from 1 to 4 p.m. Although the turkey dinner is free, donations are welcome.

Meals can be delivered to homebound Bandon residents. Reservations for meal delivery must be made by Wednesday, Dec. 20, by calling Carrie Foster at 541-260-5048 or Rosey Enderle at 907-7230846.

The meal is being organized by Jane Ujhazi, Bandon, with the help of many volunteers, including a family of 15. Funding is by generous donations from the community via a GoFundMe account.

The City of Bandon has donated the use of the Community Center to cook and serve the meal. Ujhazi is expecting approximately 300 guests and delivery of 100 meals in and around Bandon.

Live music will be provided by Kenny Croes and Dinari Freed.

--------------------------According to a press release, the FBI is looking into at least 18 threats made across Oregon on Monday, Dec. 11, including more than a dozen bomb threats that prompted the evacuation of schools in six districts, including Bandon. Others were Cascade, Corbett, Colton, Central-Linn and Arlington.

The FBI is aware of several threatening email messages that were sent to various schools, airports and houses of worship.

"While the FBI has no information to indicate these threats are credible at this time, public safety agencies can never simply discount such threats. Hoax threats put innocent people at risk and can easily distract and deplete limited public safety resources. We recognize these threats have already been extremely disruptive to classrooms and elsewhere. The FBI will continue to work with our local, state and federal law

enforcement partners to determine if the threats are connected in any way and we will act upon threat info as it comes to our attention.

We urge the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to law enforcement immediately," said the release.

"A hoax threat is not a joke. It is a crime with major ramifications," said the FBI spokesman.

--------------------------Coquille Indian Tribe Chairman Brenda Meade has sent a letter to the representative of Bandon Old Town Partners LLC (Marriott), with copies to the city and the port concerning "the gravel parking lot" at the west end of Old Town, where plans have been announced for an 85-room hotel.

In the first part of the letter, Meade thanks the developers for their cooperation and their diligence in completing geotechnical and archaeological work.

"Our people have lived and thrived on this land for thousands of years, and still do today.

We take seriously our responsibility to protect our ancestors that have walked on, and whose footsteps we walk in today. There is no other option for us as a people," said Meade.

She goes on to say, "however, there are certain circumstances, in which we simply cannot find a way to mitigate, plan or modify projects to reduce impacts to our ancestors' burials."

"Our histories ... indicate that the proposed project will be placed on top of a portion of the remains of a significant Coquille settlement that was first occupied over 3,000 years ago and that was in use for generations afterwards," says Meade as she reviewed the findings.

"The ground disturbance required to build a structure of this scale is simply not acceptable given that the location, demonstrated by Tribal tradition, decades of archaeological work, and your own contractors, is more than likely the resting place of many of our ancestors.

"We understand that this is disappointing that the parcel is not a feasible development location. The Tribe looks forward to exploring alternative opportunities with you."

--------------------------I read recently that nearly 21 percent of about 50 million adults experienced mental illness from 2018 to 2022, according to Mental Health America's 2023 report on the state of mental health in the United States. But what I did not realize is where Oregon ended up on the list of states with a higher prevalence of mental illness and lower rates of access to care for adults.

We were 47th in the nation, above only Arizona, Wyoming and Kansas with worse numbers. The top 10 best states for adult mental health are Kentucky, Hawaii, New York, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Tennessee, New Jersey, Illinois and Maryland.

And when you throw BM 110, which decriminalized hard drugs, into the mix, you can see the tragic results on the sidewalks and under the bridges of small towns and big cities across our state.

The South Coast Train Club 2023 Holiday Model Train Show was held at the Bay Area Church of the Nazarene/Kingsview Christian School Gym in North Bend on Saturday Dec. 16 and Sunday, Dec. 17.

“We’re a group of model railroaders here from the Coos Bay area,” said Peter Brandt.

Brandt said he has been interested in model trains since he was young.

“We always had trains around the Christmas tree as a child. It’s

always been part of Christmas,” he said.

The train club members display their model railroads twice per year, once in the springtime and once in December.

“This is a way for people to come and enjoy the trains during the holiday season,” Brandt said.

The South Coast Train Club leader said the club currently has about 15 members. Many of the members share knowledge and resources with each other.

The club is always open to welcoming new members, Brandt said.

They meet on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at Millington Fire Station #1 (62866 Millington Frontage Rd) in Coos Bay. All scales and skill levels are welcome.

The South Coast Train Club’s next show is scheduled at Kingsview during the third weekend of May 2024.

Eddy has gained accolades for her art, including several awards and a full merit scholarship for her Master’s in Fine Arts from West Virginia University.

“My work has a natural realism, but it’s very much rooted in surrealism and things that actually aren’t real,” Eddy said.

She said her work reflects the world we live in today.

“We navigate from being on our phones and looking at artificial generated imagery – or interact with people that we never really even speak with. Then, we have our natural environment around us,” Eddy said.

Eddy is inviting the community to get lost in her eclectic and insightful art with bright bold color palettes through her exhibit “Let Me Take You Down” at the AKI Art Studio and Gallery.

Her work is being presented through January.

An art reception will be held on from 7 to 9 p.m. on Jan. 6 at the gallery.

After her art reception, Eddy will be sharing the stage at the AKI Gallery with three of her top students at North Bend High School – seniors Caitlin Edwards,

chairperson and business owner Lori Osborne during the event.

“Whether you grew up here or just moved to town, we are all here for a reason and we are all in this together,” she said.

Participants were invited to wear their ugliest Christmas Sweater to show off for the occasion. They were also encouraged to bring a wrapped children’s Christmas gift to be distributed to local families

in need.

Dear Abby: I have been married to my husband for 12 years. We have had our ups and downs. I was unfaithful at one point, and he left for eight months, but we worked through it all.

We are now coming out of another really rough patch involving a lot of arguing and talk of divorce. I'm having a hard time because around the time he left, I started falling out of love with him. I tried my best to be a good wife and do what I am supposed to, but this last bout of unpleasantness has left me feeling empty and no longer in love.

There is now someone in my life I have developed strong feelings for. I imagine a life with him and the thought of being with him excites me. My husband is a good person, but he's an alcohol and drug addict. He has done EVERYTHING he can and is willing to do things he can't to ensure I love him as much as he loves me, and that our marriage doesn't end. He has been sober now for seven years, but habits and tendencies still remain.

The problems in our marriage are not all his fault. I have some things I also need to work on, and yet, I still imagine a life with another man. What should I do?

Please discuss the state of your marriage (and your feelings) with a licensed marriage and family therapist. It might make sense for you and your husband to have a trial separation, because changing partners might not be what you hope it will be. It would give you the chance to find out whether the "excitement" you feel for this other man is real or the illusion of a woman who is unhappy. You have already been through so much, so please do nothing on impulse now.

I am a retired widow. A new neighbor moved in next door. I have always been pleasant to her while she complains about everyone and everything, but it's getting old. She watches for me to walk my dog, then runs outside to tell me her latest woe or complain about something. She has now begun ringing my doorbell and inviting herself inside for the same reasons.

Abby, I live in a small community. We are all close neighbors. I don't know what to do about this woman. Can you suggest anything? I'm thinking about moving.

Free First Day Hike at Bullards Beach State Park

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is partnering with America’s State Parks for free guided First Day Hikes in state parks on New Year’s Day, Monday, Jan. 1.

Information about the hike is below: • The 2-mile roundtrip hike is on Pearl’s Trail

and hikers will learn about the flora, fauna, and fungi of the area on their way to the beach.

• The hike starts at 1 p.m. and begins at the campground amphitheater. Park in designated parking area only.

• The hike is on loose sand, dunes, boardwalks and limited packed

surfaces. Bicycles and strollers are not advised.

• Friendly dogs are welcome on six-foot leashes.

• Participants should dress in layers, wear sturdy shoes, and bring water and snacks, as well as a camera or binoculars for wildlife viewing.

• Contact the park office at 541-347-2209 for more information.

Coquille Tribe honored for forestry leadership

The Coquille Indian Tribe has been selected as a 2023 FSC-US Leadership Award winner by the Forest Stewardship Council.

Worldwide, the Forest Stewardship Council is the most trusted forest certification system. It uses these awards to “recognize uncommon excellence that advances responsible forest management and forest

conservation.” Part of their effort is to promote environmentally sound, socially beneficial, and economically prosperous management of forests.

Master Sergeant Edgar D. Powell and Virginia Bernice (Elliott) Powell March 9, 1925-October 30, 2023 and March 2, 1928-October 30, 2023

The lives of Edgar Delbert Powell, 98, and Virginia Bernice (Elliott) Powell, 95, created an eighty-two-year love story.

Edgar “Ed” was born in Spokane, Washington to Delbert and Ethel Powell on March 9, 1925. Virginia “Ginny” was born in Spokane to Clarence and Therese Elliott on March 2, 1928.

Although they grew up quite near each other, their paths did not cross until Virginia’s first week of her freshman year of high school. She was thirteen and Ed was sixteen.

At the age of seventeen, Ed joined the Navy and served as U.S. Navy corpsman with the First Marine Division during World War ll. When his tour was over in 1946, he returned to Spokane and married Virginia.

He joined the Army and served as corpsman to process those headed off to the Korean War and after served as U.S. Army recruiter. Ed retired after twenty-six years of military service and started a new career with Chambers

Plumbing and Heating in Coos Bay, Oregon.

Although family always came first to them, they were devoted to the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in a variety of capacities in the cities they resided.

Ed sang tenor in the choir and served as deacon and historian.

Virginia taught Sunday school and served as deaconess, elder and lay minister.

Their individual interests led them to other organizations and activities. Ed took up running in his fifties and participated in many competitive runs including the Prefontaine Memorial Run seven times in Coos Bay, Oregon, and the 1990 Kilauea Volcano Wilderness Crater Rim Run in Hawai’i, placing second in the military division. He was a former member of the South Coast Running Club and the Kiwanis Club serving as president in 19931994. Virginia’s gift of language and writing ability led to her becoming a published

author and poet. She was a member of the Oregon State Poetry Association, Oregon’s Writer’s Colony, Coos Bay Writers, was editor of the Beacon, Southwestern Oregon Community College in 1981-1982, volunteered for the American Red Cross, and was a member of the American Council of the Blind South Coast Chapter.

Ed placed value in all aspects of life. His dedication to family, friends, community, and country was evident in all that he did. He saved many lives during his time as corpsman and earned multiple awards, medals, and decorations during his military service.

Virginia was the best listener, always supporting her children and grandchildren. She was an intellectual who was ever present to all who knew her for long conversations covering a multitude of topics in her soft-spoken voice.

They touched so many with their warmth and kindness. Their

grandchildren thought they were so “cool” with keeping up with the times and engaging in conversations of contemporary topics and fashionable dress.

Everyone saw Ed and Virginia as a couple throughout their years together. It is such a beautiful ending to a long life together to depart this earth on the same day just hours apart in their home.

Ed was preceded in death by his only sibling, Dorothy (Powell) McClure and Virginia was preceded in death by her only sibling, Vesta (Elliott) Barth.

They are survived by their daughters, Wendi (Christopher) Roehrig of Kamuela, Hawai’i,

Denise (Roger) Gould of Coos Bay, Oregon and Michele (Mark) Crocker of North Bend, Oregon; sons, Kevin (Nessa) Powell of Miami Gardens, Florida, and Shawn (Tina) Powell of La Grande, Oregon; two nieces; three nephews; eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

The family of Ed and Virginia extends their deepest gratitude for the care given

by Dr. Sushan Joshi, South Coast Hospice, and to the devoted caregivers at Evergreen Independent Living.

A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Hoyle votes against Defense Authorization Bill, which extends government surveillance of Americans and continues endless overseas wars Following her ‘No’ vote on the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), U.S. Rep. Val Hoyle (OR-04) released the following statement: “Today I voted against the National Defense Authorization Act, which extends mass government surveillance of Americans’ communications for effectively 16 months without any reforms.

This bill also does nothing to put a stop to our endless wars

overseas nor rein in bloated Pentagon spending of U.S. taxpayer money.

“Let me be clear: I support many of the national security and policy priorities in this bill, including a welldeserved 5.2% pay increase for military service members, aid for our allies, and provisions that take much-needed steps to lower service members’ housing, healthcare and childcare costs.

“But this bill extends

the federal government’s ‘Section 702’ mass surveillance powers that allow it to collect millions of Americans’ communications and violate our constitutional privacy rights. Congress should enact significant reforms to Section 702 to stop privacy abuses, but this bill prevents any reforms.

“This bill also does nothing to end to our military’s involvement in several overseas conflicts which have not

been authorized by Congress as required by the Constitution, putting American service members’ lives at risk without any debate.

“The bill has provisions that continue extremist right-wing attacks on diversity, equity and inclusion and interfere in the curriculums of military service academy classrooms. The bill also fails to extend worker benefits from the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act,

which provides support for uranium mine workers who were exposed to radiation from U.S. nuclear testing.

“I strongly support robust resources for maintaining our national security. But while the U.S.’s defense budget has increased exponentially in recent years, the Department of Defense (DOD) has never passed an audit, meaning there is no oversight to identify potential waste, fraud

and abuse of U.S. taxpayer money. In fact, the DOD just failed its sixth audit in a row.

“Spending almost $900 billion in taxpayer money without robust oversight, as this bill does, is irresponsible.

We must have a more transparent defense budget to ensure responsible funding for our national defense, to provide more pay and benefits for our troops and veterans, and for domestic priorities here at home.”
