The Festival of Trees brought hundreds of community members together to celebrate the holidays while raising money for a good cause. The Festival of Trees holiday showcase and benefit auction has been raising money for Coos Bay-North Bend Rotary Club programs for nearly two decades. This year, about 250 people came to the Dec. 6 auction and dinner to celebrate and raise funds for rotary programs. “It’s a wonderful event and a great way for the community to come together for the holidays,” said rotary member Heidi Proett, who co-chairs the event with Amy Bailey. The Festival of Trees included a plated dinner, music by the North Bend High School Band, as well as auctioning off the decorated trees. The annual fundraiser is made possible through the participation of local

About our presenter: Steve Greif is a retired North Bend High School teacher that has written a history of North Bend High as well as a two-volume U.S. History text for students. He is a volunteer at the Coos History Museum and is extremely knowledgeable on local history topics. This program will be hosted in-person at the Coos History Museum with an admission price of $75 for CHM Members and $80 for the general public. This price covers the entire course of eight sessions. All proceeds support the Coos History Museum’s Annual Fund. Pre-registration is required as space is limited for this popular program. Michael “my brother and I had been sent from our mother to a family to be adopted. I was 5, Michael 3. We flew to Reno from Texas. The shock was not so bad for me as I had already been in Maryvale home for youth several times and understood I was a disposable child. Michael became withdrawn. I didn't know it then but was soon going to lose him also. Anyways, the poem I have today is the First and last Christmas by Peace & Hope Poetry. It’s from my first book, Big Boys dont Cry. THE FIRST AND LAST CHRISTMAS 1974 by Steven D. This is the First Christmas I'll never forget. It was the best we have ever had yet. An hour before we ate like kings. Now this evening we see our dreams. It was a shock with presents everywhere. My jaw dropped and I just stood there. To this day the memory still shines. As the only joy I'll ever find. There were toys and clothes and food everywhere. And the joy I felt made me think they cared. The girls were ecstatic, and so was I. While Michael sat in his corner and cried. My mom lied to me and so did this jerk. Cause the life of a slave is nothing but hurt. But in 74 my life was a dream. Too bad it was the last my heart would sing.

Steven Charles Spooner supporting all of Shawn’s activities and endeavors. Steve was an extremely talented man – musically, mechanically and artistically. He held several jobs utilizing his mechanical skills. He worked for the City of North Bend Street Department for 25 years until his retirement in 2010. He was a lifelong “Car guy” and spent many happy hours working on cars and drag racing. Steve was a long time member of the North Bend Presbyterian Church, serving faithfully in many capacities. Steve is survived by his wife of 43 years, Yvonne; son, Shawn (Cody Taylor); daughters, Jeri Twinn and Katherine Thomas; sisters-in-law, Jeanne Lloyd (John) and Mary Ann Becker (James); sister, Susan Buckingham; and his special cousin, Laurie Carl (Mike). He also leaves behind nieces and nephews who were an important part of his

A Celebration of Life will be held for Steven C. Spooner, 74, of North Bend, on Monday, December 18, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at the North Bend First Presbyterian Church, 2238 Pony Creek Road in North Bend, with Pastor Eric Lindsey presiding. Steve was born on December 18, 1948 in Portland, Oregon. He was fortunate to be adopted at birth by Willard and Emma Lou Spooner. Steve passed away on December 8, 2023, after a courageous 12 year battle with Parkinson’s disease. Steve grew up and attended school in North Bend. He married Diane Evans in 1972 and they had two daughters, Jeri Lynn and Katherine, before divorcing. He married his high school sweetheart, Yvonne LaClair, on June 7, 1980, and they were blessed with a son, Shawn Charles Spooner. Steve was a loving husband and father, enjoying and

Richard “Dick” Lee James, 82, of Remote and Coos Bay, bid farewell to this world peacefully on December 12, 2023 from complications of cancer. Dick was born March 10, 1941 in Tillamook, Oregon, where he attended school also. Dick helped build mills in his early years until he got the passion of driving semi-trucks for 52 years. His other passion for racing cars took hold for several years. He also loved NASCAR and attended many races. Dick is survived by his wife, Ruby of 37 years;
sister, Ileen; brothers, Russell and Debbie James and Steve and Lori James; son, Robert and Lalanya Sparkman; grandsons, James and Brandon Sparkman; many nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Chancy and Zora James; sisters, Chanda James, Betty Cole, Janie Weekly, Arlene Porth and Sheila Boice; brothers, Verlon, Sonny, Frank and Jack James. Dick will be missed by his many friends that he loved dearly.

A funeral mass for Mark Bishop, 71, lifelong Coos Bay resident, will be held at 11 am, Saturday, January 13, 2024 at St. Monica Catholic Church, 357 S. 6th Street in Coos Bay, followed by a potluck reception in the Parish Hall. May Mark Bishop rest in eternal peace, his memory a source of comfort to those who knew and loved him. Mark was born June 11, 1952 in Coos Bay to Norman Lee and Ester June (Benedict) Bishop. He peacefully passed away on December 4, 2023 in Coos Bay. Mark graduated from Marshfield High School in 1970 and earned an Associate in Science Degree from
Southwestern Oregon Community College in 1973. Mark served nearly 3 years as a loader operator in the Army National Guard of Oregon. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus. His career included roles at Weyerhaeuser, Co., and a significant 17.5-year tenure at Sause Bros, working as a Dayman Oiler and Cook, before retiring early due to chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Mark is survived by his wife of 46 years, Robin Bishop; his four daughters, Brandy Riley, Danielle Withers, Andrea Scherer, and Mikey

A Word, Please: The comma

“You know, I don’t think I have the authority to change the outcome.” That single line from former vice president Mike Pence’s book “So Help Me God” contains what Pence reportedly told investigators is a serious punctuation error: the comma. Pence was talking with Donald Trump on Christmas Day 2020 when he told the then-president either “You know, I don’t think I have the authority” or “You know I don’t think I have the authority.” According to ABC News, Pence told investigators looking into the Jan. 6 insurrection that what he really said was the no-comma version: that Trump knew that Pence didn’t believe he had the authority to change the outcome of the presidential election. But either Pence or one of his editors stuck a comma in there, changing the meaning of the sentence and offering a perfect example of just how important commas can be. Commas have a number of jobs. They can separate coordinate nouns, like “We have a cat, a dog and a hamster.” They can separate coordinate adjectives, like “Our cat is cute, cuddly and playful.” They can separate whole clauses that are connected with a conjunction, like “Our cat is cute, but our dog is cuter.” They can set off a direct address, meaning when you call someone by a name, which is why “Let’s eat, Grandma”
means something quite different from “Let’s eat Grandma.” They can separate nonrestrictive information, which means clauses that don’t influence the meaning of the noun: “The man, who was driving, was drunk” means there was just one man, but “The man who was driving was drunk” means you’re singling out the guy behind the wheel from some other guys. In Pence’s book, the comma is doing yet another job: setting off an introductory clause. Here’s an example of how commas do this: “Because everyone is usually here on the first Tuesday of every month, we hold our meetings then.” The main clause of that sentence is “we hold our meetings then.” All the stuff that comes before it is just an introduction to the main clause, which is set off with a comma. Punctuating introductory phrases and clauses isn’t an exact science. For some short introductory phrases, the comma is optional: “On Tuesday we have a meeting” and “On Tuesday, we have a meeting” are both acceptable. But Pence’s sentence isn’t one of those the-comma-makes-nodifference situations. Instead, a comma changes the meaning. With a comma, the “you know” is an aside. The main clause, in that case, would be “I don’t think I have the authority.” Without a comma, the main clause chang-
es. It becomes “you know,” and the stuff that follows becomes an object of the main clause. The sentence then means: You know (that) I don’t have the authority. It’s both interesting and, in this case, unfortunate that English lets you drop the word “that” in some cases. For Pence, a simple “that” in the sentence would have prevented any doubt that his point was that Trump knew Pence’s position. There’s a term for this: the zero relative. And it’s very standard in English. “I know you want more cake” means “I know that you want more cake.” “Wanda got the job she wanted” means “Wanda got the job that she wanted.” “The movie we saw was great” means “The movie that we saw was great.” In every case, you have the option of dropping the relative pronoun, “that,” without losing any meaning. But do so with caution, because your sentence might be less clear without it. The lesson here is to choose your words and your punctuation marks carefully. John Eugene Patterson July 17, 1944 – December 7, 2023
John Eugene Patterson, 79, passed away in Portland, Oregon on the evening of 7 December, 2023. John was born July 17, 1944 in Sacramento, California to Charles and Faye Patterson. He grew up in Paradise, California and graduated Paradise High School in June, 1962 and immediately joined the Navy. After serving 3 years as a Boiler Repairman (BET3) aboard the U.S.S. Isle Royale (AD-29) John sought adventure and excitement and moved to Oregon in 1965. John eventually landed in Lakeside, Oregon where he met his wife, Helen Frizzell and married on August 12, 1973 and settled in North Bend. John was a master mechanic, welder and fabricator and worked for many years in various shipyards and mills throughout Coos and Douglas County as well as some time in the Alaskan Aleutian Island chain. John was most well known as being on the sand
dunes in his sandrail or in his garage tinkering on small projects. John loved working in their garden and teaching his grandchildren how to work on cars, wood working, fishing and anything else that was hands-on. He also spent much of his free time taking walks at Ferry Road Park with his beloved dogs Lucy and Tommy. He was a huge family man that enjoyed the company of friends and family, and was always willing to lend a hand in any situation. John is survived by his wife of 50 years, Helen Patterson; sons, Travis (Melinda) Patterson of Mountain Home, Idaho and Weston (Jessica) Patterson of Coos Bay, Oregon; stepson, Boyd (Rebecca) Frizzell of Keizer, Oregon; grandchildren, Adair (Dane) Rowinski, Bradley Frizzell, Daniel (Melinda) Frizzel, Christian (Rachael), Brayden, Antonio, Bradley and Echo Patterson; as well as 1 great grandchild; sisters, Charlene Read and Patricia Moak, brother, Michael
Lindstrom; brother and sisters in-law, Michael Frizzell, Linda Goodroad and Jo Frizzell; special nephew, Chris Mollier; as well as other nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members. John was preceded in death by his father and mother; brother, Galen; and granddaughter, Madison. Handling a Hostage Crisis,1904 Style

Americans were appalled when Hamas seized 240 hostages during its October 7 attack on Israel. Among the hostages were several Americans, and the White House says there are seven Americans — one woman and seven men — still unaccounted for. People old enough to remember the Iranian hostage crisis or the Patty Hearst story know the political kidnapping of Americans is nothing new. Consider, for a moment, how Washington handled an international hostage crisis in 1904. Of the many odd people who’ve wandered into American history, Ion Perdicaris was among the strangest. His father immigrated from Greece in the early 1800s and married into a wealthy South Carolina family. Then, he doubled his fortune by investing in gas works up North. Perdicaris was born into the lap of luxury in 1842. When the Civil War began, he hopped on a ship to Athens, handed over his American passport, and became a Greek citizen, hoping that would spare his family’s Southern property from destruction. He eventually settled in Tangier, Morocco. There, he built a mansion called the “Place of Nightingales” filled with exotic animals. He studied Moroccan culture (which he loved), partied, wrote books, frequently went to New York on business, and even seduced a married Englishwoman — who left her husband and settled into Perdicaris’ mansion with her four children. Fast forward to 1904. Morocco was led by a 26-year-old sultan who ruled like a tyrant at the head of a corrupt government. To say Morocco was a mess was putting it mildly. Sensing vulnerability, Britain, France and Germany came sniffing around, hoping to expand their empires. Which is where Mulai Ahmed er Raisuli enters the story. Raisuli was the 33-year-old leader of a tribal confederacy bent on overthrowing Morocco’s government. Part pirate and thief, part heroic revolutionary, he was a Robin Hood combination of good and bad rolled into one. But on May 18, 1904, he bit off more than he
bargained for. Raisuli’s men kidnapped Perdicaris and his stepson, demanding $70,000 in ransom (about $2.25 million today). President Teddy Roosevelt went ballistic. How dare a terrorist kidnap and hold a U.S. citizen hostage! (Because Perdicaris was so wellknown in New York and the South, it was mistakenly assumed he was a U.S. citizen.) Teddy dispatched seven battleships with hundreds of Marines. Their mission: If Morocco’s government didn’t end the hostage crisis pronto, the Marines would seize the customs houses, which bankrolled that nation’s economy. If Perdicaris was killed, they were to find, attack and destroy Raisuli’s gang. As the warships steamed across the Atlantic, someone in the State Department stumbled upon an inconvenient fact: Perdicaris was a Greek citizen, not an American. Never one to let details stand in his way (this was, after all, the president who said, “I took the (Panama) canal zone and let Congress debate”), Teddy charged ahead as planned. Raisuli thought Perdicaris was an American when he seized him; that was good enough for the White House. (In fact, Washington kept Perdicaris’ nationality a secret for 29 years after the kidnapping.) With the warships nearing Morocco, Washington furiously worked behind the scenes for a peaceful resolution. Britain and France pressured the sultan to give in to Raisuli’s demands. It looked like bloodshed would be avoided. But there was a problem. 1904 happened to be a presidential election year. While all this was going on, the Republican National Convention was underway in Chicago. Delegates were ho-hum about Teddy’s renomination. (Remember, the country had inherited him after McKinley’s murder three years earlier.) There was little excitement about the coming fall campaign. Then, eight words changed everything. After making a big show of flexing America’s military muscle, Teddy feared he would look weak accepting a peaceful settlement. Knowing Morocco’s sultan was about to meet the kidnapper’s demands, Secretary of State John
J. Mark Powell Hay sent a bluntly simple communique to America’s ambassador in Morocco: “This government wants Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead.” When the message was read to the convention, the delegates went wild. This was the famous Teddy Roosevelt they knew, the cowboy who had charged up San Juan Hill with guns blazing. Now, he was displaying courage and guts again, standing tall in the face of terrorism. The country rallied behind him as “Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead” became a national catchphrase. So when Raisuli, who was very much alive, released Perdicaris unharmed on June 21, the message was clear: Teddy had triumphed over the bad guys. Roosevelt sailed to reelection that November. It’s easy to dismiss this episode as a comedic farce. No one was harmed, the U.S. wasn’t out anything but the cost of the coal to send its battleships across the Atlantic, the sultan was overthrown four years later, and Perdicaris and Raisuli even became friends during their time together. But there was a serious side to what history now calls the Perdicaris Incident. When lives are at stake, Americans respond positively when a president displays courage. And while people cheer saberrattling, they also expect our leaders to seize every opportunity to peacefully end a crisis. Perhaps most important, nobody messed with Teddy Roosevelt again for the remainder of his presidency. Washington can learn a lot today from that crisis back in 1904. ABOUT THE WRITER J. The first story I am sharing this week is something I had not previously heard of, and it's hard to even envision. A front-page article in the Oct. 1, 1925, Western World explained how two Bandon men, John Nielson and L.J. Radley, with G.E. Trott of Coquille, presented their story of asking the federal Department of the Interior to put Bandon's two rock islands -- Table and Cove Rocks -- on the market at a public auction. They had a plan. "Their plan, which they say may take several years to mature, contemplates the construction of steel bridges, connecting each rock with the mainland and each other. "The ultimate purpose is the erection of a summer resort on the islands somewhat similar to the Cliff House (first picture) at San Francisco. "They frankly stated that they did not have the funds necessary to spend $25,000 to $50,000 in erecting the bridges, but they were sure that capital could be induced to improve the islands, with possibly a quarter of a million expenditure, if the government would place them on the market. "Their application to have the islands offered for sale is with the department at Washington but has not been acted upon. "Petitions from other sources have also been filed asking that the rocks be declared a permanent government reserve as nesting places for birds." And it seems obvious that the latter plan prevailed. But can you close your eyes and imagine a stately structure built atop Table Rock ... with a steel bridge leading to Eighth Street. The Cliff House was built in 1863; enlarged in 1868; blown up in 1887; burned down in 1894; rebuilt in 1896; burned again in 1907, and rebuilt one more time in 1908. In 1977 the National Park Service acquired the property to become part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The NPS rehabilitated the historic Cliff House in 2005 to return it to its original neoclassical design. The second story comes from the April,

"Billy Moore" (second picture) is the name of a new towboat that will soon handle log rafts and do other work on the local river for the Moore Mill & Lumber company, taking the place of the Sampson. "The hull for the Billy Moore was built by Herman Bros. at Prosper and is considered as good as wooden hulls can possibly be built. It is about three times as large as the Sampson, but, for the present, will use the 65 h.p. Diesel engine that is now in the Sampson. "A distinctive feature of the boat is that, with the exception of the engine, it was built here. The hull was built by Herman Bros., the rudder, shoe and bow irons by York & Co. (third photo, located just east of the first Chappell Service Station on 101 across from the present Face Rock Creamery site), the patterns and castings were cast at Rogers Foundry and all of the machine work has been done by Bandon Iron Works. The listing was for the Rolling Pin, located in the former Shindler Drug Store building adjacent to McKay's Market. The restaurant, bakery and coffee shop business is for sale for $699,000. I am not sure who owns the building where the business is located. They first opened in Old Town before Covid, and the Rolling Pin has grown steadily in popularity. ------------------------The Bandon Chamber's Shop Bandon event is going on this week, Dec. 10 through Dec. 17. On Dec. 5, around 11:45 p.m., Neal Wisegarver 47, and Jeffrey Burns, 62, were located in the Whiskey Run area north of Bandon. The call had come in about 5 p.m. that the two men had not made contact after dark. Deputy Freerksen responded to the area and conducted an initial search. The Coos County Search and
Rescue Coordinator Deputy J. Gray was contacted due to poor weather conditions and low visibility in the area. Shortly before midnight, deputies made verbal contact with both men, who were cold and wet but otherwise unharmed. The Sheriff's office again "emphasized planning and preparing for recreational activities, especially when conducting them after the sun goes down." ------------------------Oregon DMV sent out a press release this week indicating that thousands more Oregonians are now eligible to get back driver's licenses suspended because of unpaid traffic violations. Gov. Tina Kotek ordered mass clemency for the Oregon residents, building on an order from her predecessor, Gov. Kate Brown, that forgave more than 8,000 Oregonians in the same situation a year earlier. Kotek's order forgives more than 10,000 more people whose driver's licenses were suspended only because they didn't pay fines related to traffic violations, such as speeding or parking tickets. He has already walked from Florida to Washington, and is now making his way down to San Diego. The mental health advocate said he is met with support by most ev-
eryone he interacts with. “Everybody's affected by mental health and so many people are affected by recovery. So the support has been through the roof,” he said. It’s hard to pinpoint certain highlights of his journey. “Every town has its own memories. I meet so many amazing people and every day is new,” he said. Kyndal’s social media handle is “A Walking Testimony.” He has gotten about 20,000 followers on Facebook over the course of his trek across the country. He gives regular
