Local couple brings international flavor to Oregon BY BREE LAUGHLIN The World
Chris and Liz Hendrickson have taken their love for the culinary world and brought it into a new realm. They created “Teas Tinctures Tonics,” from a simple idea to bring the best teas and spices they’ve had from their travels to Oregon. The Hendrickson’s grow many of their own herbs, vegetables and fruits in a greenhouse at their North Bend home and use these ingredients in a wide variety of spice blends and teas. “We have our own greenhouse that we've converted from an old wood workshop, so we use that to grow a lot of our spices and seasonings. I do both hydroponic and traditional methods with soil,” said Chris Hendrickson. The Hendrickson’s grow herbs like dill, basil, tarragon, chamomile and mint; vegetables such as hot and spicy peppers, tomatoes, wasabi,

A group of local artisans, crafters and small business owners are coming together under one big roof to give shoppers a huge variety of holiday gift options. The first local Holiday Market was held on Sunday, Nov. 19 in the Salmon Room at the Mill Casino. Another Holiday Market will be held at the same place from

They smoke their salts, and pick wild mushrooms. They also make spice mixes for many different types of cuisines, including India, Mexico, Southeast Asia and America. “We're trying to bring a

They also utilize ingredients from local farms, and when that isn’t available, they source them from locations around the globe. They don't use any anti caking, fillers, or preservatives in their blends. They go by the old saying, "If you can't grow it or farm it, you probably shouldn't eat it.” Both Chris and Liz come from families of professional cooks and bakers. Chris said food is part of his ancestry. “The Hendrickson’s were part of the East India Spice Company,” he said. The love for food and spices has trickled down many generations – to his grandparents, his father, and now to him. Food has also played a big part in Liz’s family. She holds “old world” baking recipes that are hundreds of years old, where everything

Lex Johnson of Bridge Coffee Roasters organizes the winter market inside the Historic Flora Building. “We have a lot of vendors who live locally and do this as a small-scale business,” Johnson said. The local markets have been a good way for incubator businesses to grow larger, and sometimes leads to brick and mortar locations, he said. The markets are also a good place for local vendors to get
the word out about what they're doing. Many of the vendors at the market started off curious about their craft and it turned into a passion. “With our coffee business, my wife says, ‘We hobbied ourselves into a business,” Johnson said. “That’s true of a lot of the people here.” The Bay Area Farmers and Artisans Market is holding a Christmas giveaway. Each $10 purchase from a vendor at the market can receive a ticket for a $50 gift certificate drawing.

gether and have a large group of people come visit us,” said Terry Cox, owner of Get Yappy dog treats. “The Mill Casino is a great place to do that and they are a great group of people to work
with,” Cox said. Cox is a local small business owner that is not only taking part in the holiday bazaars, he is also the organizer. He asked all of his favorite vendors he has met throughout the years to
participate in the Holiday Markets this year. A large variety of locally-made items can be found at the holiday markets – from art, clothes and jewelry to toys, home decor and holiday treats for pets.
There was a steady stream of visitors perusing the stands at the first holiday market in mid-November. “We've had a nice crowd come in. People are excited about the holidays,” Cox said.
He’s hoping that even more people come to the event on Dec. 17. “It’s nice to have local support and for people to shop at small businesses because the money stays in our community,” Cox said.

Small grants that make a big difference for ensuring access to arts programming, especially in rural areas, have been awarded to 119 arts organizations by the Oregon Arts Commission. Each organization will receive $2,363. Small Operating Grants support arts organizations throughout the state with annual budgets of less than $150,000. Eligibility is limited to organizations that provide ongoing, sustained artistic and outreach programming and have operated as an IRS recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit for a minimum of one year. “Although the Drexel H. Foundation and our community is rural and small compared to other parts of Oregon, our impact is huge,” said Sandijean Fuson, president of the Drexel H. Bay Estuary, the South Slough National Estuarine Reserve is one of 29 areas in the National Estuarine Research Reserve System. This reserve is managed by the Oregon Department of State Lands and is protected for long-term research, water-quality monitoring, education, and coastal stewardship. The NOAA Office for Coastal Management provides funding, national guidance, and technical assistance. Education Staff at the Reserve offer naturalist-led outdoor education both at the South Slough and throughout the community. SOCAN Reaching a New Level of Climate Action
Climate organizations are constantly urging us to reduce our footprint, but SOCAN (Southern Oregon Climate Action Now) is hoping to increase its footprint. The footprint that climate activists seek to reduce is that resulting in our direct and indirect emissions of greenhouse gases. The footprint that SOCAN seeks to increase is that of its influence. For over a decade, SOCAN has been deeply rooted in the Southern Oregon community. SOCAN promotes awareness of the science of global warming and the climate chaos it is imposing and, within the framework of resolving a history of social injustice, stimulates individual and collective action to address it. As a result, SOCAN is well positioned to continue promoting climate action. Established in 2012 with a relatively small group of supporters, SOCAN has now grown to several hundred volunteer activist supporters and a mailing list of over 2,000. Over the more than a decade of its existence, SOCAN has consistently engaged with state and federal legislators on climate proposals, delivered testimony to state agencies developing climate-related programs, offered encouragement for local communities to undertake meaningful action to adapt
to and mitigate the climate crisis, assisted educators through workshops and in-class presentations, offered community-wide opportunities to learn about climate science through events such as the 2015 Climate Summit and the annual Master Climate Protector – a Primer for Action course available for interested community members, collaborated with other non-profit organizations across the region and state in efforts to address the climate crisis through the lens of climate justice. Since SOCAN was established as the first grassroots climate activist organization in Southern Oregon, other concerned residents have established effective organizations such as Rogue Climate and Southern Oregon Citizens Climate Lobby Chapter while other organizations have added climate components to their programs. Since SOCAN has achieved success with a corps of volunteer activists and leaders, the annual budgets have been relatively modest. As a result of their recent and ongoing fundraising campaign, SOCAN Board President Hogan Sherrow recently stated: “We at SOCAN are thrilled to announce that our fundraising campaign ‘Reaching a New Level of Climate Action’ was very successful

Loran Carl Wiese
December 20, 1941 – November 15, 2023
Richards award from the League of Oregon Cities for his work on the Coquille City Council from 1986-2018, including 2 years as mayor. Many still referred to him as Mayor Wiese and could not believe he had only served in the post for one term. He also served on the city budget committee, as well as the budget committee for Coquille Valley Hospital, where his sense of humor and knowledge of the budgeting process was always appreciated. Loran was a big family man. He met the love of his life, Rochelle Craver, in 1968 when they took a French class together at Eastern Oregon College in La Grande. Loran was a hopeless French student but with Rochelle’s help, he managed to squeak out a C. After that, they were never apart. Loran graduated from Eastern with a degree in education in 1969 and was offered a teaching job in Coquille. Not wanting to be far away from each other, Rochelle transferred to Duck Country to finish her teaching degree in Spanish. They were married July 25, 1970. Son Jake was born in 1979 and daughter Ashlee followed in 1981He loved being a dad and in 2014 he became Papa to granddaughter Cora and grandson Cooper in 2017.. And then the best part of all, he got to be a “Papa” with the arrival of granddaughter Cora in 2014 and grandson Cooper in 2017. Loran discovered late in life that he had an affinity for pencil drawing, especially portraits of dogs. He started out drawing his own pets but soon branched out into doing those of friends and sometimes total strangers. He met many acquaintances during his hours of drinking coffee at Frazier’s Bakery who are now the proud owners of his work. For this, he was paid in
doughnuts and thank you cards. A special thanks goes to Fresenius Kidney Care and nurse, Rob Kerneen. Their support and kindness gave us an extra year of quality time with Loran. Loran is survived by his wife of 53 years Rochelle Wiese, son Jacob and daughter-inlaw Lisha Wiese of Vista, California, daughter Ashlee Wiese and sonin-law Keith Fortenbach and Cora and Cooper Fortenbach of Eugene, sister and brother-inlaw Susan and Larry Palmer of Federal Way, Washington, brotherin-law and sister-in-law Phil and Anne Craver of Dallas, Oregon, brotherin-law and sister-in-law Doug and Nadine Allen of Huntington Beach, California and various nieces and nephews. Loran’s passion for the past 12 years has been as State Coordinator for Reel Recovery, a nationwide non-profit that takes men with cancer on a free flyfishing trip to the Big K Ranch in Elkton every August. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to reelrecovery. org in Loran’s memory. Be well, fish on! A celebration of life is planned for January 6 at 2:00 p.m. at the Coquille Valley Elks Lodge. Phillip Andrew Cottrell, born December 20, 1941, 81, passed away November 15, 2023. The son of James and Cledith Cottrell. Phillip was second to none, except to his twin brother at birth and the lazy doctors who couldn’t bring themselves to fill out a separate form for the second twin’s birth certificate. Kid you not, they drew a line through the first-born name and wrote-in Phillip. Phil’s soulmate was a kitty named Baby, even though she lost her fluffy tail later in life. He hosted frequent barbeques with friends, riding and cooking with Hells’ Angels and

At the age of 10, his family relocated to the Coos Bay area, where he lived out his life. His dedication to hard work began in junior high school, where he built the largest newspaper route in Coos Bay. In high school, he learned the art of ceramic tile setting under the guidance of his father, eventually taking ownership of the family business, Bay Art Tile. Bob graduated from North Bend High School in 1955. Bob exemplified the mantra, “Work hard, play hard.” The long hours he put in at work funded his love of cars and other fun. Bob always had a nice set of wheels. He was proud of his ‘55 Chevy, ‘65 Mustang, four-wheelers, a backhoe at the ranch, and a rare amphibious car that he delighted in

There was always a project (or three) that Bob was involved with. They enjoyed building two cabins on Ten Mile Lake, and later a ranch in Templeton Valley. It was from these many properties that fond memories involving camping, boating, hunting, clam digging, gardening, and driving dune buggies were made. Though he exhibited a “tough guy” exterior, those who knew Bob would agree that he had a heart of gold. As a business owner, Bob gave many people their first chance of employment, treating them as adults and giving them a sense of purpose and worth. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for his friends. A stellar example of what a communityminded person should be passed away on Saturday, November 18, at his beloved home in Coquille. Loran was born in Prairie City, Oregon in 1944 and lived in Milton-Freewater for most of his young life. After high school graduation, Loran joined the Army and spent three years stationed in San Francisco and South Korea. After serving his country, he attended Eastern Oregon College in La Grande where he earned a degree in education and English. He began his life in Coquille in 1969, when he started teaching English, speech and drama at Coquille High School. It is a testament to his teaching skills that up until this day, he would run into former students who still called him Mr. Wiese and always had a memory to share about their time with him. Loran only taught for 7 years before going out on his own as an insurance agent. Other jobs followed, including a stint as Coos County Economic Director, Coquille Hospital Community Relations Coordinator, and Project Manager for Methane Energy Corporation. But those were just his paying jobs. His real love was for the community. One of his hobbies was auctioneering and anyone who was at one of his auctions knew they had better be ready to buy something if he caught their eye. At last count, he had raised over $500,000 for various causes. For many years, he was a member of the Coquille Lions Club and the Coquille Elks lodge. He was also the Voice of the Red Devils football team for 33 years and never missed a Friday night game. His booming voice, sense of humor, and love of football made him a popular addition to the games. In 2018, Loran received the James C.

A Word, Please: A Language Book Gift Guide for Every Type of Word Nerd

For certain nerdy types (you know the ones), language books make great gifts. Unlike mysteries and memoirs that are quickly devoured in e-book form — then forgotten — informative, fun grammar and writing guides double as reference books. You can wrap one up and put it under the tree knowing your recipient will reach for it again and again for years to come. Here’s my 2023 language book gift guide for every type of word nerd. For the rule follower: Most people, even grammar savvy types, don’t know about usage guides. These reference books look like dictionaries, with alphabetized entries for words and language concepts. But instead of listing definitions, they offer expert insights on usage matters. Look under E to find a discussion of when “everyone” takes a singular or plural verb. Look under D to learn that a “double genitive” like “a friend of Joe’s” is not an error even though it doubles up on the possessives. Look under C to learn about “compose” and “comprise.” Two great usage guides for the grammar buff on your list: “Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary of English Usage” and “Garner’s Modern English Usage.” For the Grammar Girl fan: The most beloved grammar podcaster of all time, Mignon Fogarty has a new book out just in time for Secret Santas. In “The Grammar Daily: 365 Quick Tips
for Successful Writing from Grammar Girl,” Fogarty delivers one easy, practical writing tip per day, every day for a year. On Day One, you’ll learn that the possessive of McDonald’s is McDonald’s. A few weeks later, you’ll learn that even though “anxious” usually carries a negative connotation, you can use it to mean “eager.” For the smart stickler: You may have never heard his name, but you’re probably already a Benjamin Dreyer fan. As the longtime copy chief at Penguin Random House, Dreyer is the reason that so many books you’ve read over the years were, in fact, readable. In “Dreyer’s English: An Utterly Correct Guide to Clarity and Style,” he uses his ice-pick wit and a brainy bent to deliver lessons on how to use English like a pro. Your giftee will read it cover to cover, laughing out loud, then keep coming back for refreshers. For the introvert: Imagine your favorite word nerd sitting in a public park behind a sign that says, “Grammar Table. Vent! Ask a question! Capitalization complaints.” Unfathomable, right? So let your language buff live vicariously through Ellen Jovin, who’s been setting up her Grammar Table in parks across the USA since 2018. Jovin weaves her fun, frightening and sometimes uplifting encounters into practical grammar lessons in her book “Rebel With a Clause: Tales and Tips from a Roving Grammarian.” For the language
sleuth: The Curious Case of the Misplaced Modifier by Bonnie Trenga should have made a much bigger splash when it came out in 2008. In it, Trenga constructs mini mysteries to investigate common causes of bad writing in chapters like “The Peculiar Puzzle of the Vague -ing Word” and “The Delicious Drama of the Weak Verb.” But don’t let the cute and cozy tone fool you. Though this book is accessible to high school and even middle school students, Trenga’s deep expertise guarantees some eye-opening writing lessons for adults of every experience level. For the dirty-worder: “You’re at the zoo checking out some exotic-looking little horseish animals, wild asses of some sort, likely from somewhere in Asia. When your child asks what that horsey is you stifle a giggle as you tell them. It’s an ass! A common question is repeated these days from Alaska to Maine: What will we do with the leftover turkey? It’s as much a part of the holiday tradition as the dressing and pumpkin pie. There are always the usual options. Turkey casserole, turkey hash, turkey noodle soup, turkey tetrazzini, and, of course, that old, reliable standby, cold turkey sandwich. A company had the same problem on its hands in 1953, only on a scale infinitely larger than your refrigerator. And what it did with all that leftover bird created an American classic. But let’s start a little beyond that. The frozen food business was on a roll throughout the middle of the 20th century. Clarence Birdseye discovered how to flash-freeze fish in 1929, creating a new industry. By 1945, Maxson Food Systems sold complete frozen meals to the military and commercial airlines. In 1949, the first frozen dinners appeared in the Pittsburgh area, packaged in paperboard containers. They expanded to much of the East Coast three years later. In 1950, Nebraska-based C.A. Swanson began selling oven-ready pot pies and turkeys. Business was brisk. Then, in 1953, someone in the company goofed. Badly. The supply of frozen turkeys it had produced far exceeded the demand. Swanson was stuck with 260 tons of it in 10 refrigerated railroad cars. And get this: The cooling system worked only when those cars were moving, meaning Swanson had to keep the cars traveling to keep the turkey from going bad. A solution was needed, and it was needed ASAP. Necessity, they say, is the mother of invention. The answer came from a company salesman. Gerry Thomas had tried frozen dinners on airline flights the year before and was impressed by them. He immediately rolled into action, ordering aluminum trays similar to those used on airplanes (and based on trays the military had used in World War II). He filled them with sliced frozen turkey, cornbread dressing with gravy, and peas. The concept was astonishingly simple. Housewives popped them into the oven, waited 25 minutes, and then — presto! — dinner was served. All for 98 cents each. (Though that wasn’t

What’s in a Name? most of them are when winter comes and food is scarce. Some of the seeds it doesn’t find will grow into new trees, helping to sustain pine forests threatened by climate change. But when I went to label my photographs, I learned something not so inspiring. It turned out that these birds are called Clark’s Nutcrackers. “Why would a bird be named after a person, and who was Clark?” I wondered. It turned out to be William Clark, best known for leading the Lewis & Clark expedition that helped pave the way for appropriation of land from hundreds of indigenous communities. After the expedition, Clark served as U.S. Superintendent of Indian Affairs and oversaw the

We don’t know who came up with “TV dinners.” There’s a widely believed misconception that the new product was intended to be eaten while watching television. Not true. The new medium was all the rage in 1953, so Swanson piggybacked it by slapping “TV” on the box. (It’s a tried-and-true marketing gimmick. Consider the Charleston Chew candy bar. Many folks mistakenly presume it originated in Charleston, S.C. In fact, when a Massachusetts candymaker began producing it in the 1920s, the Charleston dance craze was in full swing. Hence the sweet treat’s name.) Back to the TV dinner. Swanson rolled out 5,000 of its new frozen meals. Company executives held their breath. Would American consumers like it? They didn’t have to wait long for the answer. The TV dinner was an instant hit. The first 5,000 meals sold out almost immediately. It turned out that busy moms were willing to pay for the convenience of quickly and easily feeding their hungry young Baby Boomer kids. That original turkey overrun in ’53 turned out to have been a very lucrative mistake. Another round of TV dinners was immediately ordered. It, too, sold exceptionally well. By 1954, 10 million units had been bought. Business was so good Swanson gave up its profitable butter and margarine line to focus on the new product. The company expanded to 20 plants with a combined workforce of 4,000 to keep pace with the demand. The original TV dinners are still around, though microwave food has greatly diminished its market share. It’s estimated that 127.9 million of them were consumed in 2020; it’s projected to jump to 130.5 million next year. Not bad for a product that all started with 260 tons of leftover turkey. It makes that half a bird still lingering in your fridge look puny in comparison, doesn’t it?

It seems that in the early 1800s Lewis and Clark claimed to have “discovered” these birds even though they were known to indigenous people for tens of thousands of years and were here on earth long before that. I wasn’t thrilled by this name, and apparently, I was not alone. This November, the American Ornithological Society (AOS) announced that it will be changing the names of all birds currently named after people. That includes 152 bird species in the U.S. and Canada. The change comes in response to a coalition
called Bird Names for Birds that includes the American Birding Association and many local birding groups. “It is a questionable premise that species should be named after specific humans at all, as if bird species were possessions or trophies,” said the AOS committee that recommended the new policy. The AOS said it will involve the public to generate creative new names that reflect a bird species’ looks, calls, or habits. The committee noted that a large number of bird names that honor individual people were coined in the 1800s to pay tribute to “soldier scientists” traveling with the U.S. Army during the appropriation of indigenous and Mexican lands. living in the West named birds, animals, peaks, rivers, or other natural features in order to communicate something about their characteristics – not after individual tribal leaders or members. Perhaps other agencies and organizations responsible for official names of natural features will now adopt that approach and follow the AOS’s lead. In my time at Crater Lake, for example, I snow shoed to Applegate Peak, which could have a name reflecting any of its dramatic characteris-
tics but instead is named after a man who was a scout in the U.S. Army’s war against the Modoc people. In any case, I hope that on a future hike in the West’s public lands I’ll see another nutcracker burying seeds for the winter, and that this time the bird will have a name that reflects its extraordinary brain power! As I See It: The steamer Bawnmore

The first picture I am sharing is the "best" one I could find of the steamer Bawnmore, that went ashore in the fog near Floras Lake on August 28, 1895. I have an original, faded, typewritten document, which appears to be 24 pages of a 136-page book, but I have no idea who wrote it. Those 24 pages contain the story of the Bawnmore and were given to me several years ago by Doug Kistner, who'd gotten it from Stan Quigley of Langlois. It was apparently written by a man who was camping near the shore, having been hired by a San Francisco company to study Floras Lake and the tides. "I noticed a big steamship stranded some 700 feet from the shore, almost opposite the tide guage," said the writer. "This was exciting. I picked out a big weather-beaten driftlog, white with age, that was lying high on the beach, and finding a piece of partly burnt driftwood, I broke off a lump of charcoal and wrote, "WILL SEND HELP," in large letters which could be seen from the steamer. Then I hurried away to find a messenger to send via horseback to Bandon, some 20 miles north where the United States Life Saving Crew (second photo) were stationed. No telephone or telegraph existed in that locality and this was the only means of getting the news out quickly. I soon found a fellow who was willing to go, and hurried back to the beach to communicate with the ship. "The captain of the stranded vessel, having failed in his attempt to get her afloat, blew numerous whistles to attract attention but there were no other ships in sight and in fact the fog was still very heavy. (It did, however, bring a number of nearby residents to lend a hand.) When the fog lifted, I could see it was the British steamer, 'Bawnmore.' I also observed their attempt to get a line ashore. Two of their men tried to swim ashore with a codfish line tied around their waists but the lateral current carried them down the coast. They had to be pulled back again. "They next launched a small boat with one
officer and two men and they luckily succeeded in reaching shore with a small line." The writer then tells of securing the line to sand anchors, which they had sunk on the beach. They were able to launch their large lifeboat. "This way all of the crew got ashore safely although with somewhat of a drenching. "The captain's wife came in the first boat and with her, she brought her parrot in its cage. We had made several fires on the beach and built windbreaks of driftwood where she was made comfortable while waiting for the captain, who was the last man to leave the ship. "Before the last of the crew left the ship they released a number of prize cattle which had been in stalls on the steamer's deck. The animals did not seem to realize what it meant and some of them were swimming around in circles and sometimes heading for the open ocean. I believe they only succeeded in rescuing a few of the valuable animals." (The cattle that were saved were bred with Curry County cattle and were known as the "Bawnmore Breed.") "The messenger had reached Bandon all right, but the life-saving crew had to travel some 20 miles over a sandy beach, hauling their lifeboat, their gun, and all of their apparatus, and it was impossible for them to make the trip any sooner than they did. They arrived late in the afternoon and were consequently of no material assistance in saving the crew. "It was a close call. These men would certainly been lost with the boat and the line, had we not been there to assist them when they capsized." I reached out to Callie Huff of Engstrom Properties, Inc., after learning that Grocery Outlet may be working with a new consulting firm from Corvallis to do a cost analysis. Huff said that was not true. "We own the property and are still trying to pursue this site for a Grocery Outlet. It's just taking longer than expected. We have heard that there is another retailer exploring the Bandon area, but they have not asked us our permission to do a site plan on our parcel," said Huff. In reaching out to her, I asked "if there is anything the city might do to help facilitate this very important grocery store. Our community is just looking for a positive sign that this project is still on the drawing board." ---------------------------It's here! The Greater Bandon Association has announced that the "Night of 10,000 Lights" event is this Saturday (Nov. 25) in Old Town, with the Nog Walk from 3 to 5 p.m., a chance to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus in the trolley from 3 to 5 p.m. and the tree lighting ceremony at 5:30. The Nog Walk starts at the glass picnic shelter, where glasses can be purchased for $10. This is a great to support local businesses. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be in the trolley at the Visitor Center. "Join us for the official lighting of the community Christmas tree located at the Visitor Center. Mayor Mary Schamehorn will be turning on the lights at 5:30 p.m. This festive ceremony will mark the start of the holiday season," said Bethe Patrick, GBA Executive Director. Wonder what's next? I would say open air use on the sidewalks, but that's been happening on the streets of downtown Portland ever since voters said yes to BM110. An article in today's Oregonian quoted the Marion County DA who said that of the 6,271 citations ($100 fine) written for possession of drugs since 110 took effect in February 2021, only 50 people have asked for help, demonstrating a lack of accountability for the damage caused by unchecked addiction. This needs to be repealed!!

Our son plays a college sport for which he receives four complimentary tickets for each game. It works out well because there are four of us in his immediate family. However, my husband has been asking friends of his to join us at games by offering them free tickets. Our son then must find a teammate with unused tickets and ask for them. My husband gives no warning. He just announces a couple of days prior to a game that he has invited so and so. Then, on game day, we are responsible for getting these friends in and seated with us. More than once, we haven't been able to enter stadiums and see our son before games, or the beginning of a game, because his friends are late and he must stay behind to meet them. My take is this: These are public sporting events. Our son is given tickets for IMMEDIATE family. If a friend expresses a desire to go to a game, send them the schedule and say, "Awesome! Here's the schedule. See you there!" and recommend an online ticket vending site. I think it's inconsiderate to me and our son that my husband turns it into a three-ring circus. I have a serious problem I have lived with for practically my whole life. I'm sloppy. I am incapable of keeping my surroundings clean and taking care of my belongings. Each time I resolve to get busy and clean up my house or car or whatever, I become overwhelmed with anxiety and nothing gets done. Being unable to keep my surroundings clean and take proper care of my possessions has led to some very unpleasant situations in the past. I can no longer afford to continue this pattern of behavior. DEAR ALONE: You have already taken the first step, which is admitting you have a problem with which you need help. You might feel less overwhelmed if you take on these projects one at a time. Start with one drawer or counter before moving on to the next. An important next step would be to tell your doctor what has been going on, and ask for a referral to a psychotherapist who can help get to the root of your anxiety. Talking with a mental health professional and possibly taking medication could be helpful, and I hope you will consider it. I applaud you for reaching out. You are not alone in having this issue.

The Chamber Minute: Chamber banquet coming
The annual Chamber of Commerce Awards banquet is set for Saturday, January 27. Besides acknowledging the Officers, Board members, and Committee Chairs for the past year, and introducing the members who will serve in those roles for the upcoming year, we have a variety of awards and recognitions which truly make this a community celebration. We’ll talk more about the banquet as the time gets closer, but one of the main events of the evening, we need your help with right now. Citizen of the Year is an honor that is given to a member
of our community, who, by consistently giving of their time, energy and resources, has made Oregon’s Bay Area a better place to live. For 2023 that award went to Pam Plummer. She has served on the Boards of United Way and SCDC, the Bay Area Health District Finance committee, the Coos County Urban Renewal budget committee and much much more. She is an active participant of every board she is part of. In the United Way that included enlisting her family for working the clean-up days. She is a former Chamber President who didn’t miss a beat in
her involvement as she left the presidency. She was an active chair of the Business Development and Support committee. She stepped into the role of Chamber Treasurer to revamp and simplify our procedures. She was one of the guiding forces as the Chamber worked its way through the COVID impacted times. Additionally, the Business of the Year award is given to a business that has exhibited excellence in products and customer service; contributed time, manpower and resources to community improvement projects; and made significant contributions toward a
healthy economy through excellence in employee relationships and training. Last year the award went to the South Coast Family Dentistry. Their mission statement is "To maximize our positive effect on our community, our team, and our families through a hygiene driven practice of dentistry that focuses on the patients we serve. We aim to achieve this with an emphasis on the following values: Integrity, Ambition, Collaboration, Kindness and Positivity." They really deliver on that by removing barriers to affordable and great dental coverage. Additionally, they strongly support their
employees’ volunteer efforts in every aspect of community service. So how can you affect these two awards? By making a nomination for someone or business which you think meets those standards. Steve Dery November 29, 1953 – November 18, 2023
A graveside service with military honors for Steven York Dery Sr., 69, of Coquille, will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, December 2, 2023 at Myrtle Crest Memorial Gardens, 94105 Rink Creek Lane in Coquille. Steven was born November 29, 1953 in Syracuse, New York, to Donald Dery Sr. and Phyllis Oliphant. He passed away November 18, 2023 in Coos Bay. When Steve was 4 years old, he and his family traveled on the Coast-
to-Coast train to Oregon, where they settled and made their home. Steve graduated from Myrtle Point High School, class of 1971. He then enlisted in the Marine Corps and served for four years. Steve loved our country and was a very proud Marine! After his time with the Marines, Steve attended SWOCC, where he and his older brother enjoyed wrestling together on the same team. Steve was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He worked hard as a logger and loved what he did. He was a fan of Elvis, Tommy James and the Shondells, and Johnny Horton. After he retired, he spent a lot of time working with his tractor.
Steve was a number 1 sideroad and he took a lot of pride in being that. He was a fan of Tommy James, the Shondells and Elvis. He loved fast cars and after retirement, he enjoyed working on his tractor on a piece of property he bought in Bridge. Steve has an extended family, which he loved beyond words. He is survived by his wife, Allison; children, Lisa Hoag, Stephanie (Jason) Empson, Jason Hughes, Susie (Joey) Abrao, Ashley (Joey) Hughes and Steven Dery Jr.; grandchildren, Dilyn, RJ, Ostyn, Cole, Izaiah, Emma, Wyatt, Joshua, Clara, Madison, Brandon, Leila and Olivia; brothers and sisters, Donald Dery, Koren King, Candace Hinzmann, Gail Heidel, Joe Dery and Michelle
Heisen; multiple nieces and nephews; and his honorary grandson, Chance Dery. He was preceded in death by his dad, Donald Dery; mother, Phyllis Oliphant; brothers, Jimmy, Johnney, Phillip and Jeff; and his sister, Melody. Comedy Show returning to Coquille
COQUILLE — The Sawdust Theatre has scheduled its fourth comedy night of the year, bringing two additional performers to the stage in Coquille. Soul of Wit Productions of Salem introduces comedians Carl Lee and DJ Kamouflage, who will bring their adult routines to Coquille at 7 p.m. Dec. 6. “Our first three comedy shows appear to have been very well received, so we have scheduled additional shows,” said Michael Thurman, manager at the Sawdust Theatre. “Carl Lee has toured all over the U.S. with great comics, such as Ron White, Mo'Nique, Bill Bellamy and John Pinette,” said April Birkholz of Soul of Wit Productions. “Carl has performed at the North Carolina Comedy Festival and Redwood Comedy Festival, and was featured on The Bob and Tom Show and NBC's Last Comic Festival. You can also hear Carl on
Heckleproof Podcast via your favorite streaming services.” Meanwhile DJ Kamoflage is on a mission to take his career international and he is quickly on his way, Birkholz said. “While steadily expanding into major cities in the United States, he is paving his path to worldwide recognition,” she said. “He joined the ranks of several of the industry's biggest superstars very early in his comedy career. Talking about subjects like the struggles of the nightlife industry, family, pop culture, heritage, music, and current events, DJ Kamoflage's comedy is as universal as the music he plays.” Originally from Orange County, Calif., he can be seen rocking comedy clubs in all areas. He captures all audiences and makes sure to give everyone something to laugh about! The show is not reserved seating, Thurman said.
