Three Del Norte wrestlers qualify for state championships

It was a season to remember for Del Norte wrestling, and it was so for several reasons.

The local high school boys team won a seventh straight league title at Arcata High on Feb 15, one week after they took home a second straight North Coast Section Dual Championship.

And they were just getting started.

One week after winning the league championship, they traveled south to James Logan High School in Union City and took home two of the 14 individual NCS titles, while placing third as a team out of 105 section schools and advancing three grapplers to the California state championships in Bakersfield.

The talented trio — seniors Curtis Bartley and Colton Schaad and sophomore Remington Escobedo — would all win at least one match in Bakersfield, with Schaad going further in tournament action than any other Del Norte wrestler has since 2010.

Harbor Agreement with Elks to Operate RV Park on Shaky Ground

After months of long negotiations, the Harbor approved an agreement to allow the Elks to operate the long vacant Redwood RV Park. Apparently, the Agreement is on an unstable foundation and may be breaking apart over the charge of nightly RV access.

The Harbor says it needs the market rate of $55 per night. Its nightly rate cannot exceed $25 per night. The Elks patrons receive a 20 percent discount for all RV guests. In other developing news, the Harbor dredging plan could save over $1 million.

For decades, dredge sediments have been treated like garbage - hauled offshore and dumped to the deep ocean, out of sight, out of mind. Now the Harbor is looking into a pilot study that embraces sediment as a natural asset rather than a disposal problem.

The study will strive to reveal the valuable asset is put to work on strengthening the littoral zone.

By shifting time near shore disposal at Whaler Island, the Harbor may save over a $1 million in transportation costs alone.

Truancy Remains a Big Problem but There’s Hope

School truancy remains a big problem in Del Norte… but there’s hope on the horizon.

The Triplicate met with School’s Chief Jeff Harris and Chief Probtion Chief Lonnie Reyman who’ve partnered to address this chronic problem of kids not attending school.

According to Superintendent Harris and a average of 21.7 percent of 3267 are absent at any given time; that’s about 709 kids in K-12. Many are considered chronically absent (three consecutive days).

The numbers are slowly enbbing down since the height of Covid.

The loss is two fold: the District has lost $6.2million over the period of 2019 to 2024.

The other loss comes from kids not experiencing the social aspects of attending school and socializing with fellow students, adult authorities and programs.

Chief Probation Office

declares truancy has been a big for years. Reyman started his truancy prevention program back in 2018. “When kids do not go to school, they forfeit the lack of engagement, in numerous other schools activities, sports, music, after school activities and clubs.

Plus, kids who don’t go to school are more apt to commit crimes.

The DNUSD now 100 percent funds a full-time position to make home visits, meet with

school principals. The emphasis on working with parents on K-5 and grades 5-8 is underscored.

State Law requires attending of Certified K-12 for ages 6-18.

Flying to LA, just not with Advanced Air

When I began to research an upcoming trip abroad, I took a quick look at the possibility of using Advanced Air’s new Crescent City to Hawthorne service as an alternative to flying out of Medford. The look ended rather abruptly when I realized not only were there several unnecessary hurdles to overcome on the flight itself, but it added nearly $900 to the cost of my proposed trip and it only goes to LA twice a week. Advanced Air’s flight schedule may work for those going to the Bay Area, or to LA, but anything further adds cost and complications to air travel which is already becoming more complicated and expensive.

My first trip out of Crescent City, back when Sky West was the regional carrier, was to San Francisco enroute to Milan, Italy 2001. Over the next decade plus, my wife and I traveled regularly from Crescent City enjoying the local convenience of traveling seamlessly to many overseas destinations with few issues.

In August of 2023, electrical storms sparked numerous wildfires throughout Oregon and California, with 150 ignitions in Del Norte County alone. For the next three months, the Smith River Complex burned through 95,000 acres of the Smith River National Recreation Area and adjacent private lands. Hot down-canyon winds, below-average precipitation, thicket-like Douglas-fir plantations, and a century of fire suppression fueled high-severity runs down canyons, up gullies, and across slopes. The Complex closed state highway 199, shut off power to Del Norte County, and triggered evacuation orders as it burned toward Gasquet. Federal agencies, the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation, the Del Norte Fire Safe Council (DNFSC), and the Smith River Alliance (SRA) were working to complete hazardous fuel reduction around the towns of Gasquet and Big Flat under the CalFire Wildfire Prevention Grants Program-California Climate Initiatives (CCI)Gasquet Community Protection Project and Big Flat Community Protection Project-funded by Joint Chiefs Landscape Resto-

Then came a change in 2014 when regional carrier Sky West converted from prop driven aircraft to small 44 passenger jets which could not land on the short 5,000-foot runway of Jack McNamara Field. Since the ending of Sky West flights to San Francisco and Sacramento, a mixed lot of different air carriers have tried operating out of McNamara Field with limited success and I and many others have taken to flying out of Medford.

Since 2014, the Border Coast Regional Airport Authority (BCRAA) has been unable to find a suitable air carrier which can claim even 10,000 enplanements in a calendar year. Neither Oakland or Portland have proven to be suitable options for those flying out of Crescent City.

Advanced Air struggled to clear 8,000 enplanements between March of 2024 and March of 2025. With ten flights per week in Advanced Air’s thirty passenger jets, it means most flights leave and return to Crescent City half empty. While

ration Partnership. Would these be enough to save the town?

Back-burning operations ensued and conditions improved just enough before these were put to the test. As the smoke cleared amid soaking autumn rains, folks knew it was just a matter of when (not if) the next fire would come. Increasing the pace and scale of community wildfire preparedness was job one. Local fire safe councils were developed to empower, educate, and mobilize communities to live safely with wildfire. To foster collaboration between agencies and provide a voice for residents, CalFire funds a coordinator for each California county. In Del Norte, the County Coordinator is Aaron Babcock, who advances a mission to foster fire-resilient communities by empowering residents through education, training, and boots-on-the-ground projects, while hiring local workers to implement large-scale mitigation projects nearer to communities. He oversees wildfire mitigation efforts, including fuels reduction, prescribed fire planning, home risk assessments, and defensible space projects.

Advanced Air successfully received an increase in the subsidy they will enjoy over the next four years, the flights to LA do not appear to have improved the enplanement numbers. In fact, Advanced Air can claim a bit more than half the enplanements of Sky West’s final year of being the carrier for Crescent City.

It is likely Advanced Air even with the increased subsidy will have difficulty remaining as a local air service for many years in the future. The BCRAA made a serious mistake when the BCRAA went for a new terminal in lieu of lengthening the runways to accommodate the new 44 passenger regional jets. This error in judgement has turned what could have been increased enplanements out of Crescent City to San Francisco, Sacramento, or LA, into the struggle to maintain any sort of air service to Oakland or Hawthorne.

Most air travelers going to connecting destinations will continue using Med-

ford’s airport as have I. With airfare increasing in cost over the last few years, Advanced Air does not become an option. Similarly, lack of agreements with other carriers, ground transfers between Hawthorne and LAX, or Oakland to SFO, baggage transfers, renewed check in, and standing in line at security are definite negatives Advanced Air will have difficulty over coming. Most of those challenges can be laid directly at the feet of Del Norte County’s BCRAA. While it is not too late to turn this train wreck around, the BCRAA needs desperately to consider “How to lengthen the runways at Jack McNamara Field to accommodate the regional jets?” Perhaps, incorporate proposed runway repair with lengthening the runways at the same time. neighborhoods, and restoring the health and resilience of the land. By working together, residents can take ownership of fire’s role in the landscape, using it as past generations did—to sustain, protect, and renew. With thoughtful planning and collaboration, burns become impactful community events where all—from seasoned professionals to first-time participants—play a role. Rooted in time-honored lessons from Indigenous people, fire practitioners, and a broader community of experts who have successfully conducted thousands of burns, the Del Norte PBA follows a stepwise approach:

1) Site Visit- DNFSC / PBA professionals visit a property to determine suitability, understand landowner goals and expectations, and discuss necessary preparations.

2) Preparation- Advance work is conducted to ensure that burning can be done safely and will meet property owner expectations.

3) Mapping and Burn PlansThe burn unit is mapped, a burn plan is developed, and appropriate permits are obtained.

4) Good Fire- The PBA puts fire on the ground, carefully coordinating with appropriate agencies and adhering to the burn plan to maximize beneficial outcomes.

The Del Norte PBA is actively recruiting new members. Membership is free with no experience or qualifications required. Members receive invites to upcoming burns and PBA trainings, like a Prescribed Fire Community Workshop in the South Fork Smith River watershed (April 25-27, 2025). By joining, you will have access to the tools, training, and expert support needed to conduct burns safely and effectively on your own property. Whether you are looking to reduce wildfire risk, restore habitat, or improve land health, the PBA provides the knowledge and resources to help. “We battled,” head coach Clinton Schaad said of the trip to state. “The kids did their best. It’s a huge tournament. This is the biggest state tournament in the country.”

Colton Schaad finished 3-2 in Bakersfield, making it to the top 16 in the 165-pound bracket, including victories over the Nos. 15 and 18 ranked wrestlers in his weight class.

It was the most successful appearance at state for any Del Norte wrestler since the legendary Bronk McCovey claimed back-toback state championships in 2009 and 2010, the only time an H-DNL grappler has ever won a state title in the sport.

“Colton had a fantastic tournament,” his father and head coach Clinton Schaad said.

Colton Schaad also was presented with the prestigious California Interscholastic Federation Pursuing Victory with Honor medal at the state meet for his actions, positive attitude and sportsmanship.

Bartley, who along with Schaad was making his second trip to the state tournament, was seeded No. 14 at 138 pounds.

He lost his opening match, but battled back with a much improved performance in his second match, before eventually bowing out of the tournament and ending a successful high school career that included back-to-back NCS championships in his junior and senior years.

“Curtis had a rough first-round match, but everybody in this tournament is a quality wrestler. This is the best of the best,” Clinton Schaad said. “In his second match he looked much more like the Curtis we know.

“He wrestled tough and he had an amazing career at Del Norte. I told him this is just a stepping stone, part of the process.” Escobedo, meanwhile, was making his first trip to the state tournament after winning a first NCS championship the previous week, and he immediately

looked like he belonged.

Competing at 150 pounds, Escobedo also lost his first match, before battling back to secure a victory in match No. 2 and gaining some valuable experience.

“He looked good,” Clinton Schaad said. “Remington’s only a sophomore and it’s his first time here, but even to make it here is an accomplishment. Remington went out there and gave it his all.”

Bartley will continue his wrestling career on the college mats after graduation and has committed his future to North Idaho Junior College, one of the top JC program is the nation.

Colton Schaad, who was an NCS champion as a junior, will also wrestle in college and has received plenty of interest and offers. The 4.0 GPA student-athlete is currently considering his options and says he wants to find the right fit for his academic and athletic ambitions.

Several other Del Norte wrestlers impressed at the NCS championships. In addition to the individual titles for Bartley and Escobedo, five other Warriors placed in the top eight and medalled.

Alex Osborne finished second at 115 pounds, but did not advance to state after losing his true second matchup, which allows a third-place wrestler to face the second-place wrestler for the second and final state berth in the division, providing they have not faced off earlier in the tournament.

Colton Schaad lost his quarterfinal matchup but battled his way back through the consolation bracket with four straight wins to secure third place, before wining his true second matchup to secure state qualification.

Braydon Johnson rounded out the Del Norte boys medalists with an eighthplace finish at 192, while Karlye Dodson finished fifth at 140 pounds for the Del Norte girls at their NCS championships at Albany High School and her teammate Allie Bartley finished seventh.

If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 877-2377878, or visit www. peakforeclosure.com using file number assigned to this case: CA-RCS-24020337 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an

“eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. The petition requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This Authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration au-

thority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A hearing on the petition will be held in this court as follows: Date: March 21, 2025

Time: 10:00am Dept.: 2

Address of the Court: 450 H Street, Crescent City, CA 95531

If you object to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney.

If you are a creditor or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an

attorney knowledgeable in California law. You may examine the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk.
