A crowd estimated between 1,500 and 1,800 braved the threatening weather to enjoy the Crescent City Christmas Light Parade and celebration of the lighting of the Community Christmas Tree. The route serpentined south down H Street, easterly on 3rd Street, and south on K, to the delight of the warmly-dressed onlookers. Parade co-sponsor Potter Real Estate praised all 25 float/ walking entries and the crowd which braved the cool temperatures observing the parade and tree lighting ceremony. Winning entries included Del Norte High School Cheer, Marine Mammal Center. US Forest Service, Potter Real Estate, Crescent Elk and Cheer, City of Crescent City Fred Endert pool. Special thanks was given to Green Diamond Resource for the tree donation, Hemmingsen Construction delivered the tree, the Del Norte Fair for donating the Santa Clause stage and Del Norte High School Madrigals sang carols. Ana Potter remarked the crowd which viewed the parade and tree lighting was the largest she’s ever witnessed.

Tommy saw his future as a building inspector or contractor. When the economy soured in 2008, Tommy switched gears and changed career paths. “We didn’t have a Boys and Girls Club nor a YMCA back then. We kids used to meet at the old Noll Surf store. “I used to envision and dream of having a store to serve local youth in skateboarding and surfing.”

Sutter Coast Hospital Chief Executive Officer Mitch Hanna is stepping down after serving an illustrious three-decade career in healthcare administration. Hanna served in the dual CEO capacity of both Sutter Coast and Sutter AuMitch Hanna burn Faith Hospitals. An attorney, after beginning his career in health administration in 1986 in Modesto, Hanna later became assistant general counsel. In 1999. Hanna later became CEO of Sutter Coast Hospital and Sutter Auburn Faith. What The Expulsion Vote Of George Santos Says About Jared Huffman And The Reality Of The Democrats First, I am not a Republican. I have voted Republican in the past, but they lied to me and did not follow through on their campaign promises. I am also not a Democrat. I have voted Democrat in the past, but they lied to me and did not follow through on their campaign promises. This is why I am now an Independent, because the reality is, neither party cares about US. They only care about themselves, their own power, and the money it brings them. Today, December 1, the United States House of Representatives FINALLY voted to expel conman George Santos from office. This is something that should have happened before he was even sworn in, but that’s politics for you. In fact, even the vote to expel him is simply just politics. For the last year, George Santos has been able to act as a full-fledged Member of Congress, despite being a legitimate conman. Do you think that is appropriate? I sure don’t. I also don’t think it is appropriate that Senator Bob Mendez is still serving as a Senator despite selling his influence to foreign interests. However, now that George Santos has been removed by the House, can we expect the Senate to do the same with Bob Mendez? Absolutely not, and here’s why. Removing George Santos doesn’t hurt the GOP but it does send a message to Americans that, “Congress cares about corruption and will remove corrupt members.” I certainly hope you are not foolish enough to believe this message. In reality, George Santos has already cast the votes both sides needed him to cast so they can promote their individual agendas. Now that he has no more value to either side, and now that he is simply a liability, Members of Congress have joined together in a ⅔ bipartisan vote to expel him, thus protecting the “integrity” of Congress… Yeah right. Here’s the reality of Jared Huffman and the Democrats. They simply do not care about corruption. They simply do not care about YOU. Now to be clear, neither do the Republicans, but with the Democrats and Jared Huffman right now, their silence on Bob Mendez after voting to expel George Santos SHOULD tell you everything you need to know about them. If Huffman or Democrats actually cared about US, they would insist that Bob Mendez step down as well. If he refuses, then they need to vote him out, the same as Santos. This will NEVER happen though because removing Mendez from the Senate would directly weaken Democrats’ majority, and they would never allow that. So, this then puts the onus on you. As a loyal Democrat, are you really going to stand there and say that it is good that George Santos has been expelled but Bob Mendez should not be held to the same standard? Are you really going to continue to support Jared Huffman and the Democrats when they allow and encourage a corrupt senator like Bob Mendez to stay, simply because his absence would weaken their political base? What does that say about YOU as a loyal Democrat? Every American who considers themself a Democrat has rallied against Donald Trump and the GOP’s corruption. Are you now going to turn around and protect Bob Mendez and the corruption of your own party? My friends, my neighbors, my coworkers, my fellow Americans. Grow up. Open your eyes. BOTH parties are equally corrupt. BOTH parties are actively selling US out so they can line their own pockets. NEITHER side cares about US or is advocating for US. Here is the truth, since the year 2000, Republicans have held the House, Senate, and Presidency THREE TIMES, including under Donald Trump, so where is your conservative wishlist? On the other hand, Democrats have held all three branches twice, including under Joe Biden in 2021, 2022, and 2023. So again, where is your liberal wishlist? There is zero excuse for either side to hold all three branches of Government multiple times, and then choose to not deliver for their voters. We are not a county of Democrats and Republicans, we are a country of Americans. Right now every American is hurting. There are no discounts or protections given for being part of one party or the other. Crime and high prices affect us all the same. WE have to start working together. WE have to accept the reality that both sides have had multiple chances to fix our country and have chosen not to. WE have to accept that long standing Members of Congress like Jared Huffman have had over TEN YEARS to fix our problems and have simply chosen not to. As we suffer, I encourage you to Google the net worth of some of your Members of Congress on both sides. Look up their houses and see where they live. Look up their assets, where they vacation, what they drive and the cost of what they wear. Ask yourself why are you voting to support this election after election? Ask yourself honestly, what have they done for you? If Trump didn’t do it in 2016, why do you think he’ll do it now? If Biden didn’t do it in 2020, why do you think he’ll do it now? It is time we all stop this Republican vs Democrat nonsense. It is time we all stand up as AMERICANS and say we are ready “To Eliminate Corruption in Congress.” Jason Brisendine

The Primary Election is March 5, 2024, and it will be here before you know it. It is not too early to start paying attention to what is happening with campaigns if you want to be an informed voter. Ballots will be mailed to everyone in the first week of February. California voting will start in two months! Senate Campaign There has been a change in the race to replace the late Senator Dianne Feinstein. According to a story in the San Francisco Chronicle (11/29/23), “Silicon Valley business executive Lexi Reese has ended her Senate campaign over financial woes.” Lexi Reese said, “We’ve raised approximately $2 million, which sounds like a lot of money until you compare it to the top competitors in the Senate race.” Despite donating $534,216 to her campaign, Reese was trailing Adam Schiff who has $32 million on hand. Katie Porter has nearly $12 million, and Barbara Lee has $1.3 million. This is further evidence that a candidate with no political experience cannot simply buy their way into winning an election. Experience matters. Reese said she was concerned with how difficult it is for an outsider to run for office. Before beginning her campaign in June, Reese had shown little interest in political activism. Reese has never run for elected office, yet she wanted to start at the top and run for Senate without
any prior experience. Jungle Primary California has a jungle primary for most elected offices including U.S. Senate. This means that the top two vote getters regardless of party affiliation will advance to the general election in November. The way the election for Senate is shaping up, there may be two Democrats or a Republican and a Democrat. In the November general election, it is likely that a Democrat will win this Senate race. In California, the Republican party voter registration is shrinking, and the Democrat registration is growing. Democratic registration has increased from 45.1 to 46.3 percent. Republican Party registration has decreased from 27.1 to 24.0 percent. Despite this disparity in party registration, if the three top Democrats split the Democratic vote, then a Republican could make it into the top two in the primary. The leading Republican contender is a former baseball player from southern California with no government experience. Ballots May Vary On the March Primary ballot, everyone can vote for our next Assemblymember and U.S. Senator. In Del Norte County, only voters in District 1, District 2 and District 5 will get to vote for County Supervisor. The Presidential Primary race will be different. Only Republicans will get to vote for Republican Presidential candidates. Only
Democrats will get to vote for Democratic Presidential candidates. However, if you are registered as a No Party Preference (NPP) voter, you can request a Democratic ballot. The registrar of voters recently mailed a notice to all NPP voters advising that they should return a postcard by December 29 to request a cross-over ballot. The Democratic, Libertarian and American Independent Parties will allow cross-over voting. The Republican, Green Party, and Peace and Freedom Parties do not. Rural Assembly Since most state elected officials are from urban areas, persistent advocacy has been needed to raise awareness of rural issues. We have come a long way. The new Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas comes from a rural agricultural county, and I have high hopes for his speakership. With Robert Rivas as Speaker, rural California will be well represented. The most recent indication of this change is the shake-up of the Assembly leadership. Speaker Rivas has elevated our Assemblymember Jim Wood to Speaker Pro Tempore, the second highest post in the Assembly. Speaker Rivas said, “Californians want their Assembly to run with efficiency and transparency and Assemblymember Wood has the experience,
temperament and ability to exceed their expectation.” The third ranking position in the California Assembly is Majority Leader. Speaker Rivas has appointed Cecilia Aguiar-Curry to this position. For as long as I have known Assemblymember Aguiar-Curry she has been a staunch advocate for rural California. On every bill she asks, “Is it fair and feasible in rural areas?” Rural Progress Another rural ally, Mike McGuire is now the Senate President Pro Tempore. Senator McGuire has a storied history of delivering results for our community. With this new leadership in place in the Assembly and Senate, the next legislative year should be ripe for adopting policies and programs that will benefit rural California. If we communicate with our elected officials and present solutions rather than simply complaining about problems, we can make progress. Google Is Biden Antitrust Chief’s ‘White Whale’ By TAYLOR MILLARD InsideSources.com
Call him the Captain Ahab of the antitrust world. And Google is his white whale. When the Biden administration’s trial of the search engine giant kicked off this fall, it was the culmination of years of work by anti-monopoly crusader Jonathan Kanter. President Biden tapped Kanter to lead the Antitrust Division at the Department of Justice, which immediately ramped up its confrontational approach to monopoly-related cases. The federal government claims Google bribed tech companies like Apple to make its widely popular search engine the default choice on web browsers. Google CEO Sundar Pichai denied that last month, characterizing the deal as making it easier “for users to use our services.” He added people used Google search because, “If you make the user’s experience better, they would use the web more.” Kanter’s problems with Google date back to his work in private practice. He opposed Google’s purchase of DoubleClick in 2007. Kanter also represented TradeComet and MyTriggers in antitrust cases against
Google in 2008 and 2009. In 2012, Kanter accused Google of bad behavior against rivals including telling advertisers that they can’t “coordinate ad campaigns across multiple platforms.” Long before conservatives accused Google of censorship, Kanter claimed it manipulated search results to hide potential rivals. He told the Washington Legal Foundation the federal government had an easy case against Google because executives know users won’t leave the platform even when it starts offering “an inferior experience.” Before taking over antitrust, Kanter represented a series of Google rivals, including Magnite Inc., OpenX Ltd., Roku Inc., News Corp. and the News Media Alliance, a trade association representing more than 2,000 news publishers. It adds up to millions made by Kanter while advocating antitrust actions against Google on behalf of competitors. That has critics wondering why Kanter was chosen to lead the government’s legal charge against Google. “The optics are terrible, certainly,” said Robert H. Bork Jr. His father, the late Judge Robert H. Bork, created
the consumer welfare standard that Kanter wants to set aside. “It doesn’t make any sense,” said Carl Szabo, vice president and general counsel at NetChoice. “Once upon a time, I worked at the U.S. Office of Government Ethics. We have a saying there, and it’s part of the mantra — public service is a public trust. And here you have a prosecutor who, as an opponent of what he is doing, can make a legitimate claim that he’s not bringing this case in the best interest of the American people, but in the best interest of his former clients that made him very, very rich.” One former Google executive sees Kanter’s involvement in the Justice Department’s lawsuits as an example of his previous loyalties. “It just looks like there’s very little difference between his private practice focus in his practice as head of the antitrust division,” said Adam Kovacevich, founder and CEO of the Chamber of Progress. He was previously Google’s senior director of U.S. policy. “The optics have always been bad because it shows that Kanter had a decade-plus ax to grind against Google, and he has brought that into his role as a government enforcer.”
Letters to the Editor Time to cut taxes I am writing to express my strong support for the elimination of the statewide sales tax and a reduction in the gas tax in the state of California. These measures would not only put more money in the wallets of Californians but also alleviate the financial burden on households. Removing the sales tax on goods and services, especially essentials like groceries and gas, is a commend-
able step towards easing the cost of living for residents. It directly impacts the daily expenses of families, allowing them to allocate funds to other crucial needs. Furthermore, a reduction in the gas tax is essential to provide relief to both individuals and businesses, particularly in a state where transportation is a significant part of daily life. Lowering this tax would contribute to decreased overall expenses for
Californians. In these challenging economic times, such measures can stimulate local spending and support the financial well-being of the citizens. I urge policymakers to consider these proposals earnestly for the benefit of all Californians.

Floyd recognized as graduate of IAFE Institute of Fair Management
Kimberly Floyd, Del Norte County Fair, was recognized as a graduate of the Institute of Fair Management at the 2023 International Association of Fairs and Expositions Convention and Trade Show held in Salt Lake City, Utah. Launched in 2007, the Institute consists of a series of courses covering the areas of core competency necessary for today’s industry professionals and volunteers involved in the production of their agricultural fair. Courses include management, risk management, marketing, programming,
operations, and year-round facility usage. “Kimberly was among 26 individuals who met all of the Institute of Fair Management requirements to move to graduate status. Front Street Road Project nearly complete By ROGER GITLIN The Triplicate
Crescent City Public Works Director Dave Yeager delivered an overall thumbs up for the Front Street Road project. When The Triplicate asked Yeager about glitches in finishing the $3.3 million project, he lamented, “the Smith River Fire complex understandably diverted contractors
to more pressing issues related to public safety along 199.” Other than the reality that the rainy season is now here, the project has been an enormous success according to Yeager. What’s been done remains to be competed: • Asphalt paving has been completed between G and I streets • All sidewalks have been completed and are
compliant with the American with Disabilities Act. • All Street lighting has been installed and is functioning. • Seven crosswalks between H and I streets have yet to be completed for pedestrian access via Stamps Way. • Concrete stamping will now begin. As the concrete needs to cure for about a week, dry weather is essential.
This portion of the project utilized approximately $1.8 million. Pending good weather conditions, the new road will be accessible the first week of January. In April, groundbreaking will begin from I Street to the intersection of Play Drive. Funding of approximately $1.5 million has been secured. The city extends its appreciation for community patience as this project nears completion.
Huffman announces $4.4 million Smith River Alliance grant

Last week, U.S. Representative Jared Huffman (CA-02) announced that the Smith River Alliance was awarded $4,467,184.73 from the National Coastal Resilience Fund (NCRF) to restore fish passage and build coastal resilience in Del Norte County. This funding is part of a $144 million tranche of funding to support natural infrastructure projects in 31 coastal states and U.S. territories. These grants
will support the design and implementation of projects to enhance the resilience of coastal communities and improve habitat for fish and wildlife across the United States. The grants in this program will generate more than $97 million in matching contributions for a total conservation impact of $242 million. “Coastal communities are bearing the brunt of climate change and suffering from impacts of extreme, destructive
weather and more. It’s our responsibility to protect these places and the people and wildlife that depend on them, which is why I strongly advocated for this funding in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law,” said Rep. Huffman. “This federal investment in local infrastructure will also benefit our iconic salmon populations, which are often blocked from productive spawning grounds by poorly designed culverts and
crossings. With this funding, we can do better and improve road safety and drainage while we rebuild sustainable salmon populations.” “We are thrilled about securing funding for important county infrastructure projects which protect essential evacuation routes while also benefiting salmon and other species,” said Grant Werschkull, Smith River Alliance Co-Executive Director.

funding. • Phase 1 was the first step in the process to evaluate the feasibility of using the Cultural Center as the multi-tenant Del Norte Discovery Center. The completed Phase 1 report was submitted by prospective partners State Parks, Redwood Conservancy and Chamber of Commerce, each entity unani-
mously supporting the expansion. Phase 2 begins upon council approval of the amendment. The partners city, state and National Parks, Redwood Parks and possibly the chamber will be meeting in January with grant funding to be announced during the summer months of 2024. Frodo appears to be some sort of Doodle mix! He was found at a local gas station with his buddy, Samwise, who is also available for adoption. He is a little meek at first but warms up quickly. OBITUARIES George Mayer 10/18/1939 - 11/17/2023
Our beloved father, brother and friend, George Mayer, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2023, surrounded by family and friends. He was 84. George was born in Commerce, Michigan to parents Reginald and Dorthea Mayer. He is survived by his daughter, Cindy, grandchildren Nicole and Kevin, and siblings Emily, Kathleen, Frank, Mike, Fred, Danny, Darryl and numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his special niece Naomi, as well as David, Jasmine and Josh who were like family to him. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 48 years, Cece, son Loren, his parents, and his sisters Patsy and Katherine. George graduated from Del Norte High School in 1958. He was a proud member of the armed forces from 1959-1962, serving in the U.S Army in the far reaches of Alaska. After his service he attended Santa Rosa Junior College in pursuit of a degree in architecture. Sadly, his studies were curtailed by the untimely death of his mother, and he needed to return home to Crescent City to help his father care for his four siblings, all under the age of 7. George resided in Crescent City for more than 60 years and was the owner of GR Construction. As a licensed building contractor since 1969, he took pride in building or remodeling many, many homes and businesses throughout the city and county, including the original nunnery at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the Smith River and Elk Valley Rancherias, and
the Masonic Lodge. If you talk with builders and contractors in the area, most will tell you they were employed or mentored by George at some point in their careers. George had a deep love and dedication to his country and his Crescent City community and gave a lifetime of service devoted to the safety and vitality of both. He was a member of the Crescent City Volunteer Fire Dept from 1970-1982 and being honored as Fireman of the Year in 1984 was one of his proudest moments. He was elected to and served on the City Council from 1979-1984 and again from 1991-2000, serving as Mayor in 1995 (“Mayor Mayer” was a running joke). George was a member of the Masonic Lodge, living their mission to make the world a better place. He was a presence and force within the local VFW, avidly supporting their mission and activities and proudly building their Point of Honor memorial. He cherished his many years of breakfasts with close friends Don Marcum, Tom Cochran, David Short, Paul Sellers, Bob Douley, Lee Richardson, John Davis, and Dale Lesina. He and Cece enjoyed their many years with friends learning to square dance and attending the squaredancing socials around the area. George was also a very talented artist; he especially enjoyed charcoal drawing and wood carving in his spare time. George had a big heart and there are many among his family and friends who can attest to his unselfish, loving, loyal
and supportive ways. He was intelligent and had a delightful sense of humor and playfulness. He was quick to smile and laugh and always making a new friend, usually named Smoke, Little Smoke or Big Smoke. George had a dynamic and captivating personality; once you met George, you never forgot him. The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the entire community for the outpouring of love, compassion and memories shared by so many. While George requested no formal service, the family would like to invite community members to an informal remembrance of him on Sunday, December 17th, 2023, from 12-3 pm at Enoteca Restaurant, 960 Third St., Crecent City, CA. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider a donation to the Del Norte Scholarship Foundation to honor George and assist students pursuing architectural studies or the building trades. Contributions can be made in care of the Del Norte High School Counseling Office. Remembrance on Sunday, December 17, from 12-3 pm at Enoteca Restaurant.

Comment Deadline: February 13, 2024 WHAT IS BEING PLANNED? The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) proposes to permanently restore a section of highway, known as Last Chance Grade, located on U.S. Highway 101 in Del Norte County (post miles [PMs] 12.7 to 16.5). Last Chance Grade is a 3.5-mile-long section of highway approximately 10 miles south of Crescent City. The project would permanently restore the highway in response to landslide activities that have created roadway damage and frequent highway closures for decades.
WHY THIS PUBLIC NOTICE? Caltrans has studied the effect this project may have on the environment and prepared a Draft Environmental Impact Report/ Environmental Impact Statement and Draft Section 4(f) Evaluation that identifies the project’s potential impacts and potential avoidance, minimization, and mitigation measures. The build alternatives would result in significant and unavoidable impacts related to late successional forest and marbled murrelet and its designated critical habitat. Potentially significant impacts related to special status bat species and greenhouse gas emissions would be reduced to less-than-significant levels after implementation of mitigation measures. The project site is not located on any list of hazardous materials waste sites compiled pursuant to Section 65962.5 of the Government Code. This notice is to let you know of the availability of the draft environmental document for you to read and review, and the opportunity to provide comments. A virtual public Open House as described above will be held to give you the opportunity to learn more about the project and to talk with Caltrans staff before the final design is selected.

SBA acted under its own authority to declare a disaster following a request SBA received from Gov. Gavin Newsom’s authorized representative, Nancy Ward, director of the California Office of Emergency Services.
