Chapel By the Sea officially installs permanent pastors MATT BRANDT Guest Contributor

Mark and Wendy Olson have been the designated pastors of Chapel By the Sea since they moved to Lincoln City in November of 2017. On Sunday, July 7, the congregation recognized them in an Installation Service as permanent pastors. This event was a worship service ‘party’ that publicly acknowledged the indefinite commitment of Mark and Wendy to the congregation and the community. Members of the church were present, as well as friends and mentors from a church that the Olsons attended over 20 years ago.

die out. On Thursday, July 4, there were reports of heavy smoke coming from the Café structure at approximately 7:45 p.m. North Lincoln Fire and Rescue (NLFR) was dispatched to the scene and arrived within ten minutes and had the fire extinguished in approximately 30 minutes.

The Café had heavy smoke inside the building and flames were seen from the eaves and chimney. The damage was contained to the kitchen area and attic, according to NLFR, but the smoke and heat throughout the building caused extensive damage. “Fortunately, nobody was in there and nobody was hurt,” NLFR District Captain Jim Kusz said. Owner of the Otis Café, Jeff England, was stunned by the news like much of the community, and the impact has been weighing heavy on his mind. See OTIS CAFE, Page A10

But thanks to long time owners Monika and Fritz Hucke, the store will continue to offer to same great service with the same staff, but with a new name: Coastal Appliance & Mattress Experts. The store at 1517 SW Highway 101 held a grand opening on July 5, as Monika cut the ribbon and celebrated with some tasty hot dogs and a raffle. Coastal Appliance & Mattress Experts held a grand opening on July 5, as owner Monika Hucke cut the ribbon and celebrated with some tasty hot dogs and a raffle for those in attendance. “We had some wonderful, great years and were very successful with those stores, but the bankruptcy of Sears affected the way we could do business and we had to make a decision,”

Monika Hucke said. “Our contract went to 2021 and we planned on finishing out that contract and then retiring, but we both believed that they wouldn’t make it that long.”

The Huckes then began liquidating their stores and where left with a decision to make. With their retirement still a few years away, the couple decided to leave something for the commu-

Finding a home In 1993, the Hucke family immigrated from Germany with hopes of moving to California to live near family. But along the way, they landed in Lincoln City and discovered a love for the coastal town. “We loved it here and decided, you know what California is not for us,” Monika said. “So we stayed here and have been here ever since.” Although some might not like all the traffic that passes through town on a daily basis, Monika said See APPLIANCE, Page A10
