Searchers continued looking for victims this week following the massive landslide March 22 that killed at least 27 people and left dozens missing at Oso, Wash. Officials said the slide, caused by heavy rains that saturated the ground, moved 300 years of debris over homes and roadways. Officials in Oregon issued a landslide warning during recent heavy rains last week, saying landslides can occur anytime of the year, and that the entire Oregon Coast is at risk for such events. “Most landslides along the coast are most likely to move during periods of extended wet weather, but some can

move at any time of year,” Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries Chief Scientist Ian Madin said. “Although the human tragedy at Oso was the result of an unusually large and fast-moving landslide, and a very unfortunate placement of homes. What is more likely along the Oregon Coast is a much slower landslide that destroys roads or property over weeks or months.” Madin said steep slopes, weak geology, such as mudSee LANDSLIDE, Page A8
