Police look for suspect, hit-and-run vehicle

According to witnesses, the lights were flashing at the time. Officers arrived on scene and located Lincoln City resident George Phillips, who was being given first aid by bystanders. Witnesses at the scene said Phillips was walking across Highway 101, west to east, in the marked crosswalk when he was struck by a southbound vehicle. The vehicle then continued southbound, without stopping or rendering aid.

Perhaps it was the eulogy delivered by friend and fellow coach Earl Lahti that best set the mood for approximately 300 friends, family members and admirers of “Coach Manny” Lopez. Lopez, a longtime local youth coach, died unexpectedly following a stroke at age 55 Saturday, Feb. 8, in Portland. His life as perhaps the area’s most popular
coach was celebrated for nearly two hours Saturday, Feb. 15, in an emotional public ceremony in a crowded Taft High School gym. Lahti joined numerous people who maneuvered their way down the congested wooden bleachers and took the court to share an open mike and pay their respects. He told of the time when Manny wanted to call his youngest son, Henry, whom he was coaching, “Hammerin’ Hank,” after slugger Henry

A partnership between Catholic Community Services, the Congregational Church of Lincoln City and Lincoln County community leaders has been formed to develop the Lincoln County Community Home for Children. “There are at least 30 children in Lincoln County who aren’t thriving in regular foster care,” said Jim Seymore, of Catholic Community Services. “They are bouncing from one foster care home to another.
