Lincoln City postpones mayoral deliberation

Although many of the holiday events have been canceled this year, locals across Lincoln City have been getting into the holiday spirit by decking out their homes with lights. After last week’s fiery discussion among the Lincoln City City Council following Mayor Dick Anderson’s resignation, the council has decided to push the decision of how to proceed until the new year.

Toward the end of a nearly five hour city council meeting Dec. 14, mayor Anderson announced that effective immediately, he has resigned from his position.

“As you know, I’ve been elected to State Senate,” Anderson told the council. “I need to clear my calendar to take on that responsibility. So my intention tonight is to resign as mayor with two years remaining on this term.”

Anderson said with the resignation, it allows the council more time to evaluate both options of replacing him: by appointment or through a special election. Anderson thought the announcement would loosen the time frame for someone to file for election if one took place in March of 2021. However, council found out after the meeting that it is too late for candidates to file for a March election, meaning a May election would be the only option.

Anderson strongly advised the council to choose an election process similar to the special election for the vacant city council position that was filled last month. Anderson said it feels ‘less genuine’ to appoint someone to the position.

Fire cleanup asking for specific property information THE NEWS GUARD

Oregon property owners affected by September’s wildfires must provide specific cleanup needs to help crews plan and schedule upcoming work.

Those participating in the Oregon Wildfire Recovery Debris Management Task Force Step 2 cleanup need to complete a questionnaire asking for property specific information including how many buildings were on the property, the number of burned vehicles and the locations of underground tanks and foundations.

Property owners should watch for a letter or email from the task force with details on how to access the questionnaire and should complete it as soon as possible. The letter and questionnaire are available in alternate format and multiple languages. If someone is not able to complete the questionnaire online

at wildfire.oregon.gov/cleanup, they can call the wildfire hotline at 503934-1700.

Cleanup On private property, crews will remove dead or dying trees if they pose a threat to the safety of cleanup crew or public right of ways. The next step will be removal of ash and structural debris, including concrete and other household and construction materials, from private homes and businesses. A list of what is included in cleanup is available.

Hazard trees removal along roadways has begun. The initial focus is on logs and debris remaining from fire response work. Crews will then move on to private property.

Step 2 of the cleanup includes homes, mobile home parks, second homes, businesses and other structures. Once work is completed, property owners will receive a

notice that the property is ready for rebuilding.

Property owners in Clackamas, Douglas, Jackson, Klamath, Lane, Lincoln, Linn and Marion are eligible to participate in cleanup.

For most, the cleanup will be at no cost. The work paves the way for rebuilding efforts, community recovery and helps revitalize Oregon’s economy.

Home and business owners must sign a Right of Entry Form with their county to allow cleanup crews onto their property. Visit https://wildfire.oregon.gov/ or call 503-934-1700 to submit your form and for more information. Even those who did not join in Step 1 of the cleanup, which focused on hazardous household waste, may still opt into the program.

As COVID-19 immunizations have begun around the state this week, Oregon Health Authority has finalized its recommendations for who will be the first to receive doses of new COVID-19 vaccines.

Oregon’s Phase 1a COVID-19 Vaccine Plan and Recommended Sequencing aligns with federal Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for broad groups to be included in the initial phase of vaccine distribution.

With a focus on health equity, the plan adds more granularity to federal recommendations and outlines specific populations within the broad groups — and in a wide range of health settings — that should be the focus for vaccination “when considering the allocation of scarce critical resources in the face of a public health crisis such as COVID-19.”

The plan also creates a framework for distributing and sequencing COVID-19 vaccines throughout Oregon based on equity, individual, environmental and activity factors that put people more at risk for contracting or spreading the virus or experiencing serious health consequences from the virus.

“This plan helps us make

sure we follow our own principles of health equity as we strive toward meeting our priorities for distributing the vaccine during this critical first phase,” said Dana Hargunani, M.D., M.P.H., OHA chief medical officer.

These priorities include ensuring that vaccine is accessible for those who are included in Phase 1a and want to be vaccinated, and that information about COVID-19 vaccines is broadly available in a linguistically accessible and culturally responsive manner.

As stated in the plan, these priorities are critical “to be responsive to the diversity of people living in Oregon, and to mitigate historical and contemporary injustice and stigma of communities of color, tribal communities, people with disabilities, and longstanding mistrust of the system and distrust of vaccines.”

The plan breaks up Phase 1a into four groups.

Examples include but are not limited to: Group 1: Hospitals; urgent care; skilled nursing and memory care facility health care providers and residents; tribal health programs; emergency medical services providers and other first responders.

Group 2: Other longterm care facilities and congregate care sites, including health care providers and residents; hospice programs; mobile crisis care and

related services; individuals working in a correctional setting; personnel of group homes for children or adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Group 3: Outpatient settings serving specific high-risk groups; in home care; day treatment services; non-emergency medical transportation.

Group 4: Health care personnel working in other outpatient and public health settings.

The types of individuals or settings within each group are not listed in any particular order and don’t indicate a planned “ingroup” sequence, but are intended to be concurrent as logistics and vaccine dose availability allow, the plan states. In addition, the plan calls for applying the broadest definition of “health care personnel” as outlined by ACIP and the CDC, which includes contractual staff not employed by a facility.

In all, OHA expects that between 300,000 and 400,000 individuals will have access to COVID-19 vaccination during Phase 1a. Work is in progress to further estimate the numbers of people within each of the Phase 1a groups.

OHA also continues to work with state agency and community partners to communicate broadly about Phase 1a plans, and to develop detailed distribution plans for all potential Phase 1a recipients.

OHA’s equity-focused Vaccine Advisory Committee will be informing the next phases of vaccine distribution beyond Phase 1a to include critical workers, people with underlying health conditions and those older than 65. The general population isn’t expected to be eligible for vaccination until sometime in spring 2021.

The Lincoln City Police Department (LCPD) plans on using the first of their 2020-2021 DUII Enforcement Grant funds during the up-coming Christmas/New Year’s holiday season.

This time period is part of the national “High Visibility Enforcement” event time period which runs from December 16, 2020 through January 2, 2021.

The national High Visibility Enforcement events are designed to increase the number of patrol officers on the streets nationwide with an emphasis on seeking out drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs and removing them from the roadways.

The holiday season is known for being merry and bright, but it is also known for being the deadliest season when it comes to impaired driving. Every holiday season, lives are lost due to impaired drivers.

The LCPD is joining forces with other law enforcement agencies across the nation to crack down on impaired drivers. The goal is simple: to save lives.

“Drunk driving is simply not worth the risk; if you drive drunk, you will be arrested,” LCPD officials said.

DUII Enforcement Grant funds from the previous grant allocation were last used during the 2020 Labor Day weekend time period. The results of two

enforcement operations included one DUII arrest, two drivers were cited for Driving While Suspended, three other traffic violation citations were issued and a number of traffic violation warnings were given.

“The members of your LCPD are committed to the safety of our citizens and visitors, and these grant funds are a valuable resource that assist us in improving the traffic safety in our community,” LCPD officials said. “These grant funds were made possible through Oregon Impact and the Oregon Department of Transportation.”

Public Health watching for signs of overdose THE NEWS GUARD

Eugene Police Department issued a safety advisory Dec. 9 regarding a sudden increase in overdoses in the Eugene area.

Recently, the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) reported a 70 percent increase in overdose deaths for April/May of this year compared to last year. OHA reported that the recent increases in overdose death appear to be driven by the presence of fentanyl in the drug supply.

The increase in overdoses in the Eugene area may be an indicator that the drug supply may be mixed with fentanyl. Fentanyl has been found in heroin and other opioid substances, meth, cocaine and ecstasy. Any

street drug may be mixed with fentanyl.

Fentanyl may be mixed into the illicit drug supply because it is cheaper to produce and extremely potent. Fentanyl is also a prescription medication that can be misused, similar to other prescription opioid medications.

Lincoln County Public Health is advising the public and our first responders to: - Look out for overdoses - Carry Naloxone or Narcan and be ready to deliver the life-saving medication - Alert others to the increased risk of overdoses and the possibility of fentanyl in the drug supply Naloxone/Narcan Saves Lives: Naloxone is a medication that can be administered

during an overdose to temporarily block the opioids effect on the body to delay or prevent death during an overdose. Naloxone is available as an injectable or nasal spray (Narcan). If Naloxone is used, the effects are temporary, and the person still needs medical attention.

You can get naloxone through: - Any pharmacist in Oregon can prescribe naloxone for you.

- Anyone who can prescribe medication can send a naloxone prescription to your pharmacy.

- Lincoln County Harm Reduction provides free naloxone 541-270-9069.

- Confederated Tribes of The Siletz Indians also provides free naloxone, 541-444-

9672.

Call 9-1-1 if someone is having an overdose: Even if Naloxone is used and overdose symptoms are reversed, the effect is temporary, and the person still needs medical attention. Call 9-1-1 if someone is having an overdose. Good Samaritan Law protects you from being arrested or prosecuted for drug-related charges or parole/probation violations based on information provided to emergency responders.

Before signing off, Anderson said he’s appreciated his 12 years in local government and thanked the council before turning meeting over to Council President Judy Casper. Until a new mayor is elected/appointed, the council president will fill the role.

Prior to the conclusion of the meeting, council discussed which route they would like to take in filling the vacant position. The council then deliberated on how to proceed that had councilors Riley Hoagland and Mitch Parsons heavily in favor of holding a special election while councilors Diane Hinton, Rick Mark and Judy Casper remained undecided. Ultimately, the meeting ended in a motion to hold a special meeting on Dec. 21 to reach a decision.

During the Monday meet-

ing, Casper opened by clearing up some of the confusion the council had been hearing regarding the mayor position.

Casper and Mark both stated the mayor position is not the chief administrator of Lincoln City and is one of the seven city legislatures that represents the city at large.

Early in discussions, Hoagland presented the option of waiting to make a decision about how to proceed until the new year after the council adds its sixth member.

“We now know that there’s no reason to make a decision now knowing that the date for filing with the city recorder has passed,” Hoagland said. “Obviously I spoke very strongly about this being an election, but we could include (Anne Marie Skinner).”

Parsons asked council what would happen if the vote was split after adding the sixth member. City Attorney Richard Appicello said if no decision is made, council must “sit in a room and hash

it out until you come to a different decision.”

Parsons said he remains in support of holding a special election and Mark said he’d be in favor of that notion.

“I appreciate councilor Hoagland’s point that we could let the new councilor participate, but that is a scary thought that we could be 3-3,” Mark said.

Councilor Hinton then spoke in favor of appointment, but also waiting until January to make a final decision.

“This is a major decision that we are all working towards. I’m leaning towards waiting until January because we should hear (Skinner’s) thinking about a mayor as well as all of us,” Hinton said.

“I think that because we have a short term coming up for mayor, that we need someone who’s been tried and tested and someone who has the experience walking in the door. That’s my personal take.”

Casper was also in favor of appointment and said the council has served their individual Wards with the community in mind and were elected to make these kinds of decisions.

“If we should appoint, I know that we would appoint someone that has the qualifications to carry on in this interim position,” Casper said.

“We have a lot of unknown things out there right now that we are facing: COVID, fire recovery, I’m sure we are going to have flooding very

soon, we need someone who knows what’s going on.”

Parsons then said he felt like the council was contradicting themselves by saying the mayor is just one more vote on this council, but yet he felt they were pumping up how important this pick is. Hoagland agreed with Parsons comments.

“They’re the figurehead of Lincoln City and you say they don’t have any power, but they do have power in that they are what Lincoln City is looked at as… it absolutely is important who that person is,” Hoagland said. “If the five of us pick somebody, I don’t believe the vast majority would be happy with us picking somebody at all.”

Hinton disagreed with

Parsons comments and said they were simply informing the public of the mayor’s role within the city.

“This is an interim position, it is not a full term,” Hinton continued. “We have to take a lot of hard votes and we don’t always agree. I would argue act a new councilor would bring a different perspective and perhaps would bring ideas, thoughts, comments or questions that we haven’t thought about.”

Hinton said it would be ‘rude’ to not to include the new councilor in the decision.

A motion was then made to postpone the discussion until Jan. 11 and make decision at that time. The motion passed 4-1.

Lars Alan Robison Lars Alan Robison, 62, passed away Nov. 29, 2020, at his home in Depoe Bay, Oregon from PML caused by the JC virus. The lifelong Depoe

Bay resident was born in the old Toledo, Oregon hospital Dec. 28, 1957, to parents Frederick Charles Robison II and Beverly Jean (Margeson, Robison) Poling. He was born a twin, a surprise to his parents and the hospital staff, seven minutes before his sister Liz. Lars was preceded in death by his parents and brother Jan (Pogo) Robison.

Lars will be remembered as a tireless ambassador to Oregon’s nearshore ocean as a charter boat captain, an advocate for his community, a keeper of its history, and a kind-hearted source of support and mentorship to many.

Lars began his seafaring in a rowboat in the bay alongside his dog Laddie. He cleaned fish for his family’s charter boat company and

worked as a deckhand aboard his father’s boat Jimco II before earning his captain’s license.

Lars’ first charter vessel was the Ahi followed by two boats named after his dog Samson. Lars also operated dive boats in Hawaii and worked aboard his brother’s commercial fishing boats in Alaska during the off-seasons. He was a co-founder of Dockside Charters in Depoe Bay that has grown into a large fleet of local charter boats. Lars ran fishing, whale-watching, siteseeing, and research trips for his guests to connect with these waters in various ways.

Lars possessed a deep understanding of ocean history and local ecological knowledge that spanned generations. He used these to serve his

community both at sea and onshore. He served as chairman of the Depoe Bay Harbor Commission for over 14 years, the Near Shore Action Team, and a number of other fishery councils and boards. He listened to local issues and shared his vision for improvements to the community. Lars was named Depoe Bay Man of the Year in 2012 for his contributions.

Lars was a mentor to many regardless of their endeavors. He used his knowledge and experience to teach new deckhands the ropes of the charter fishing industry.

He offered encouragement as they found success in their own pursuits. He modeled a tireless work ethic and pushed himself to enjoy new adventures and experiences always. Lars

was a trusted confidant for his friends and family as always backed his support with a laugh and smile.

Lars is survived by his twin sister Liz Martin, siblings Suzi Snyder, Frederick Charles “Beanie” Robison III, and Krista Robison, of Depoe Bay. His nieces and nephews are Grant Snyder, Lauren Hinton, Kasey Watson, Autumn Watson, Rosalyn Robison, Frederick “Vaughn” Robison, Mackenzie Martin, and Ross Martin. His great-nieces and greatnephews are Lane and Teal Hinton, and Mathias Fyrleiv-Martin. Lars and his family were so warmly comforted by Aging Wisely and Hospice in the last weeks of his life.

A community gathering to remember Lars’ life will follow at a later date.

VOICES OF THE COMMUNITY Support Oregon’s Culture Very few Oregon industries have suffered more than our arts and culture sector this year. Performing arts organizations, museums, concert halls, libraries, theater groups and dance companies across the state have taken a huge hit due to ongoing closures and restrictions on large gatherings.

In June, an Oregon Cultural Trust survey revealed the devastating financial

impact of the pandemic on arts and cultural organizations. By mid-July, Oregon led the nation in allocating $25.9 million in federal CARES Act funds to the arts and culture community through the Cultural Trust’s County Cultural Coalition network. The funding reached 621 organizations in every corner of the state and saved many from permanent closure -- but the crisis and their losses continue.

Now, in a focused effort to help our cultural community recover in 2021,

the Cultural Trust is urging more Oregonians to donate to organizations they value and to utilize Oregon’s unique cultural tax credit to leverage greater annual funding for culture.

Donors simply give to one or more of the 1,450+ cultural nonprofits the Cultural Trust supports, then make a matching donation to the Trust before December 31. The donation to the Trust comes back, dollar for dollar, when the donor claims the cultural tax credit on their state taxes. Meanwhile, the Trust

donation sends a signal to the Legislature to set those funds aside to support cultural projects.

The Cultural Trust annually distributes up to 60 percent of funds raised to its five Statewide Partners, County and Tribal Cultural Coalitions (who regrant the funds in their communities) and directly to cultural organizations through a competitive grant program.

The remaining 40 percent is invested in the Trust’s permanent fund to support culture for future generations.

Please help our arts, history, heritage and humanities nonprofits survive the pandemic by donating to the Cultural Trust and claiming your tax credit.

landlords and tenants, small business, and schools. Legislators will travel to Salem for a one-day gathering.

This is different from the “catastrophic” or virtual session that had been considered to allow remote voting and limited quorums.

The notion of an inperson session has drawn criticism from some lawmakers, who see it as too risky at a time when the state has seen rapid spread of COVID-19. I regard legislators as “essential workers” who have a job to do and must do it carefully. Here is an overview of what is on the agenda.

LC 18: Extend the

Residential Eviction Moratorium by amending the eviction moratorium passed in the first special session last June. Originally set to expire on December 31, the new legislation will provide support for residential tenants and landlords through June 30.

Here are the new provisions of the current concept: To avoid rent, tenants will now have to sign a declaration that they have experienced financial or health hardships impacting their ability to pay. Absent that legal document, they can be evicted for nonpayment.

Landlords who have not been paid can apply for rent compensation through Oregon Housing Community Services on behalf of all their tenants who owe rent payments. Smaller landlords and landlords with a higher percentage of unpaid rent will be prioritized for assistance first.

The landlord compensation fund will begin with an initial $150 million General Fund appropriation, with potential for future federal and additional state allocations. The fund will grant landlords 80% of the total unpaid back rent they are owed. Participating landlords will be required to forgive the remaining 20%, making tenants current on their rent payments. The fund is completely voluntary.

Some tenants and landlords believe the bill doesn’t go far enough to meet their needs. I’ve heard from others who feel the proposal goes too far or costs too much. Overall, I think it is a reasonable and affordable compromise that helps renters who are un-

deremployed and landlords who have not been paid for far too long. Without immediate action, we will face a year-end avalanche of evictions in the middle of a surging pandemic and cold, wet winter weather.

LC 10: A Restaurant Support Package designed to help the many struggling restaurants and bars on the verge of financial collapse.

The restaurant industry is seeing revenue losses between 40-70% due to temporary closures, reduced indoor seating, changing rules, and increased staffing and payroll costs to maintain COVID-19 protocols.

Outdoor seating is difficult to maintain during Oregon’s wet and cold winter season.

New proposals are being encouraged by the Oregon Restaurant and Lodging Association. I think they are helpful but may not work well for our coastal business.

based meat alternative that users just add hot water to re-hydrate it and you can make patties or chop it up for things like tacos. All the products also have a long shelf life.

After a while, her products started garnering attention. Whitacre said she’s been approached by large companies like Nestle, Walmart and Home Goods. Her products were also one in six picked by CBS producers as one of the most innovative products to come out of Oregon.

“Oregon is looked to by the world, for these kinds of products,” Whitacre said. “It’s so fun because I’ll be at a Wusata event in San Francisco, and have seen buyers that might only speak a small amount of English, totally light up when they hear me say the word ‘Oregon.’

“Oregon has these fabulous food makers and no co-packing for shelf stable products (which are the best to ship). That’s why this is so exciting!”

As some businesses started to feel the impacts of the pandemic earlier this year, Whitacre said she took action quickly to make sure her business survived.

“Once COVID hit, I pulled out my contacts and called Home Goods and they gave me the biggest order I had ever seen in my life,” Whitacre said. “We scrambled to get that to her and it took a very long time. We got that to them and now we are in stores nationwide.”

Home Goods has about 900 stores across the U.S. and are now a seller of Great Life’s soup and veggie burger plant based mix.

New Partnership A little while later, Whitacre connected with two New York investors Suzanne Salomon and Denise Sinclair. Through their conversations, a partnership formed and the three have created a new business model that they feel has great potential.

“We were just so impressed with Lucinda’s ethics and values and the success she’s had already with these wonderful products,” Salomon said of their initial conversations. “We felt like this would be the perfect pilot and expand more nationally.”

With the long shelf life of Whitacre’s dehydrated products, the three women believe it could be a perfect compliment with freshly grown produce that could be combined to create a healthy, affordable and locally produced meal.

We’re hoping to create a sort of ecosystem of people working together from across the country through farmers, farmers markets and Lucinda’s products,” Salomon said. “People within the farmers markets could really highlight their own produce within Lucinda’s products that customers could use to make meals.”

With several connections throughout various farmers markets, Whitacre said local food growers have been top of mind in their business discussions.

“We’re talking about helping farmers,” she said. “If we can get that ugly produce that the stores don’t want and stuff that may be close to dated, we’d be helping

(farmers) while also using local produce to put into our all natural products.”

Sinclair said the possibilities are endless for healthy meals at a low price point. Through this business model, Sinclair feels it’s a new way to rethink the supply chain in how people go about getting fresh foods and making it more accessible.

“In this time of COVID it’s fascinating. It’s a way to rethink so much and people who have relied on old methods are now more open to being more nimble, agile and creative with technology and sustainability,” Sinclair said.

“These basic food products that have been around for hundreds of years now have the ability to be consumed again in an easy way.

These are healthy, local and nondestructive foods.”

Currently, Whitacre said she is in search of a new place to expand operations. She is currently producing the products in a kitchen in Portland and one in Depoe Bay with a very limited staff. Availability on the coast has proven to be scarce, but that hasn’t stopped the Good Life team from searching for a new shop.

“I’ve had offers in Portland, but I really want to keep it here,” Whitacre said. “I feel like we need it here more.”

Another focus of the company has been women in business. As the three have proven to be successful businesswomen, they are hoping to help out other women

“A big thing for us is that we want to help woman who are displaced out of the restaurant business,” Whitacre said. “We want to have them help me through my business process while also showing them this side of business that hopefully can lead to them starting their own business, and we’ll help them with that.

“I just feel like women have been some of the hardest hit during this pandemic.”

With this new and innovative

business model, the three women believe it can be used across the US once it’s established and proven in this area. Sinclair said there are several areas in the nation that don’t have access to fresh healthy foods. This model could change that.

“With Lucinda’s recipes it makes it fun and we can come up with all sorts of variations and meals at a low cost that’s efficiently distributed,” Sinclair said.

“That’s our dream, to branch out from this experiment we’ve created.”

Lincoln City nurse wins Samaritan DAISY award THE NEWS GUARD

Nursing is a demanding profession during the best of times, but 2020 at Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital has tested the limits – closing an old hospital, moving into and adjusting to a new hospital, evacuating during wildfires that destroyed nearby neighborhoods, and dealing with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Despite these challenges, clinic and hospital nursing staff continued to shine, as evidenced by the 33 DAISY Award nominations naming 25 staff members. From these many nominations, Stacey Mello-Galloway, RN, was named the 2020 DAISY Award recipient.

As a charge nurse in the hospital’s Emergency Department, Mello-Galloway has worked at Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital for nine years, but her path into a nursing career took some detours.

In her younger years, she was a single teen mom who didn’t finish high school. Wanting to set a good example for her daughter, Stacey studied and earned her GED diploma and went back to her ordinary job. But a college counselor who worked with her during these studies recognized her caring and unselfish character and pushed

her to do more with her potential.

Following Stacey from job to job over the next several years – yes, years – the counselor kept asking her, “What is your plan? Are you going to keep doing this?”, convinced that she would be perfectly suited to a career in nursing.

“My thought was I can’t do that kind of education. I can’t be a nurse. I can’t, I can’t, I can’t,” Mello-Galloway said.

Conquering her fears and self-doubt, she began nursing school in her late 20s and had an epiphany.

“As soon as I started doing the clinicals (hands-on skills training), I was like, ‘What was I waiting for?

This is what I’ve been waiting to do!” Mello-Galloway said.

During the DAISY Award celebration, which was held virtually last month, the hospital’s executive leaders praised all the nurses who were nominated.

“To see that long list of nominations and to know how many people were recognized for the extraordinary care that you all give, it’s just truly inspirational,” said Virginia Riffle, chief operating officer. “I have had the pleasure of reading the nominations and I have to say it brings tears to my eyes. These nominations

“You have been providing this amazing care during extraordinary times,” Riffle continued. “The pandemic has caused visitor restrictions which means you mean so much more to these patients and their loved ones. When they come here alone you make them feel

they are not alone. You help them through that difficult and frightening time.”

Mello-Galloway was nominated by her colleagues who wrote in part: “Whenever I see her bright and cheery face walk in, I know with confidence that no matter what comes through those ER doors, that everything will be OK. I have never met a nurse as extraordinary as Stacey. Her skill

Free help to quit tobacco for good

This year, helping people quit is more important than ever.

With many people motivated to quit as a New Year’s resolution, and with cigarette and e-cigarette prices increasing on January 1, now is the time to get them free help to quit tobacco for good.

In addition, as the number of COVID-19 cases continue to surge, quitting tobacco is an important way for people to protect themselves from developing serious complications from COVID-19 and tobacco use.

“Now is the perfect time for people to make their quit plan,” said Sara Herd,

Tobacco Prevention and Education Program Coordinator. “We know that six out of ten people in Oregon who smoke, vape or use other tobacco products want to quit. Smokefree Oregon and Lincoln County offer free counseling and medication to help, along with tools for people to quit on their own, for parents to help their children quit, and for health care providers to help their patients quit.”

To inspire people and connect them to free help, Oregon Health Authority’s Smokefree Oregon is running advertising campaigns from mid-December 2020 through April 2021. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, campaigns like this are a powerful way

to help people quit, prevent others from starting, and support tobacco prevention.

Oregon Tobacco Quit Line: Free help 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for both youth and adults.

ServiceMaster store receives top honors THE NEWS GUARD

ServiceMaster Brands last month honored Brian and Kelly Greer of ServiceMaster Restore of Salem with the Marion E. Wade Award of Honor at the annual awards ceremony for ServiceMaster Restore Franchises. The Greer’s also own ServiceMaster Restoration & Cleaning Services in Corvallis and ServiceMaster Restoration Services in Lincoln City.

They qualified for the honor by being one of three nationwide recipients of the Marion E. Wade Expert Awards.

The ceremony brings together Restore franchises around the U.S. to honor high-performing members of its franchise network.

“It is an honor to be serving the Salem community and expanding to service Corvallis as

well as Lincoln City,” said Brian Greer. “We always strive for the highest quality and don’t rest until our customers are happy with our restoration efforts.”

The Award of Honor, and associated Expert Award, is given in memory of Marion E. Wade, who founded ServiceMaster in 1929 as a mothproofing company. Wade viewed individual employees and customers as worthy of dignity and respect and his values drove the business. The Award of Honor is presented to one franchisee each year and recognizes the one franchise who most embodies the ServiceMaster values and is dedicated to growing the business.

The award is presented to one of the Marion E. Wade Expert recipients, which recognizes one franchise each for three categories — Commercial, Personal Lines and Construction.

Both North Lincoln Fire and Rescue and the Depoe Bay Fire District battled the elements last week to deliver gifts to Lincoln County. After weeks of gathering and wrapping gifts, NLFR and the Eagles Lodge delivered food and gifts to 300 families in North Lincoln County during the annual Toy and Food Basket program. With the help of Chester’s Thriftway Markets and countless others, DBFD also handed out toys and food to residents in Depoe Bay.
