THE NEWS GUARD
The 2018-19 Oregon School and District At-A-Glance Report Cards were released to the public this week. The goal for the Lincoln County School District (LCSD) remains the same, to use the report to help identify areas of strength and weakness and to guide the district in continuous improvement. Superintendent Dr. Karen Gray summarized that this annual report card issued by the Oregon Department of Education offers a summary of student performance and growth in Lincoln County LCSD Superintendent School District. Dr. Karen Gray Dr. Gray, who is now entering her second year as superintendent in the district, summarized her impressions of this last year’s results. “Across Oregon, students and their attendance and academic achievement rates are being reported by the state for the 201819 school year,” Dr. Gray said. “Most school districts did not post increases in academic achievement or attendance and our district was no exception. What the report card tells us is that we have a long way to go.” Dr. Gray noted that math standard achievement scores were very low throughout the school district, but the English Language Arts and reading performance was much higher and improved on. “Our graduation rates are generally outstanding and in some schools, higher than state averages,” Dr. Gray said. “I am very proud of LCSD for our overall graduation rates. Our secondary principals have worked very hard to ensure that every student graduates college and career ready.” However, the report card also revealed See SCHOOLS, Page A3

The first ever Keiki Kowabunga Challenge surf event was a rip roaring success for local nonprofit Neighbors For Kids (NFK). The soon to be annual event was held a Otter Rock on Sept. 28 and featured 50 young wave riders ages 2-17. “The day was blessed with sunny weather, absolutely no wind and despite the fact that the ‘surf was up’ with 8-10 foot waves, all of the kids stayed safe and
were stoked to surf the inside break as we cheered them on from the shore!” said Toby Winn, NFK Executive Director of Development. Winn said the surf event was successful thanks in part to the contributions from sponsors and donation from several local businesses. Every surfer received a goodie bag full of items, an event t-shirt, a ticket for the raffle drawing and food and snacks to enjoy in between waves. “The top sponsor of this first-time event was our local Ossie’s Surf Shop,

followed by the Boardriders Foundation and Surfrider Foundation,” Winn said. “NFK is very grateful for sponsorship received at all levels and looks forward to next year’s event.” The Keiki Kowabunga Challenge was held in honor of NFK board member Byron Lewis. “It was a great day to join together as a community while our kids enjoyed the ocean,” Winn said. If parents are interested in enrolling their children in the preschool or school age program there are spots available. After a year of renovations during a multimillion-dollar expansion, the 40 plus year old Coho Oceanfront Lodge in Lincoln City is better than ever and ready for another 40 years. During October of 2018, the Coho Lodge set out to expand their business that includes a spacious front lobby, enhanced fire pit area, new oceanfront suites and a remodeled breakfast room. The expansion and renovation was led by VIP Hospitality Group (VIP), along with Denny Han as the project architect and PDG Construction Services as the project general contractor. With this completed renovation, the entire
building is now accessible by elevator, as they added a second to the north building. The new lobby facelift and expansion features what VIP calls an eclectic, casual mid-century modern beach vibe that has now doubled in size. “Our designer did a really good job of making it casual, while also adding some luxurious touches,” said Diana Steinman, area operations manager for VIP. “It’s very cozy but still really luxurious.” The project added a new communal fire pit area, which Steinman calls the ‘crowning glory’ of the whole renovation. The fire pit, which was excavated by local company Drayton
