Out with the old, in with the new. Almost two years ago, Oceanlake Veterinary Clinic purchased the old feed store at 3219 NW Highway 101 in Lincoln City. Since then, the clinic has been in the process of gaining city approval and permitting, as well as securing the necessary funding. And although COVID-19 did delay that process even further, the Ocean-
lake Veterinary Clinic has finally jumped through all the hoops to start building its new home. On May 29, the veterinary staff and a small portion of the community, gathered to celebrate with a groundbreaking ceremony at the new site. “We know that many of you would have preferred to celebrate with us and I assure you we wanted that to happen,” Jennifer Malter, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Oceanlake said to the community. “We did not envision this moment without all of you that helped us become who we are today. However, we had to abide by current social distancing and group gathering requirements.”

City Council talks lodging criteria, public mask wearing MAX KIRKENDALL newsguardeditor@countrymedia.net
Short-term rentals are now allowed to reopen in Lincoln City, and the City Council answered some of the questions being asked at a recent meeting. On May 29, the City Council met for a special meeting to discuss several topics, mostly about lodging being permitted to open on June 1. Prior to discussions, Mayor Dick Anderson spoke briefly about a County meeting he had recently attended, which detailed the Phase II criteria of the Governors Reopening Oregon plan. According to Anderson, Lincoln County is unlikely to qualify for Phase II due to the inability to trace the latest COVID-19 (coronavirus) cases in the county. Anderson also noted that the county’s unemployment rate is still among the highest at 26 percent. The Council then discussed some of the lodging criteria, such as the 24-hour rule, which was met by some confusion for short-term rental own-

Graduation Plans Oregon schools have all been faced with the same dilemma this school year: How can they hold a graduation ceremony within the state’s COVID-19 restrictions. It seems Taft 7-12 has developed a solution. Last week, Principal Lupo announced that Taft would be holding a unique ceremony on June 6 at Taft High School. “We have some great plans in place for our seniors that will be different from our traditional graduation, but we believe it will still honor our graduates,” Lupo said in a letter to families. “I want to thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we all have went through some dramatic changes.” Starting at 11:20 a.m. on June 6, Taft will show a virtual graduation video on the school’s website and social media. The pre-recorded video will feature the traditional ceremony format with speeches from Lupo, Superintendent Dr. Karen Gray, guest speaker Mary Parnell and speeches from the Valedictorians and Salutatorians. After the video, students will head up to the school at 1 p.m. for a drive-up graduation. Graduates, along with their families, will take turns driving up to the designated booths that will include the receiving of the diplomas, gifts and more. The school has also instilled safety guidelines such as requiring a minimum of six feet between all graduation participants and having all staff members wear masks. Additionally, all passengers will remain in the vehicle except for photo opportunity for one family member taking a photo from a designated area. Staff will monitor and make sure each family stays in the designated area and wears masks. Other safety measures can be seen online at taft-high. lincoln.k12.or.us. “The graduating class of 2020 will never be forgotten,” Lupo said in the letter. “I am grateful for all the support that each of you have given to our students as they end one chapter of their lives and start a new one.”
