Floats for the Frontline MAX KIRKENDALL newsguardeditor@countrymedia.net
Stories of local small businesses struggling through the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic are abundant. But thankfully, it’s the stories of locals helping locals that have shown through during these difficult times.
One local business, ThornMeadow Glassworks, is experiencing the hardships daily, but also doing what they can to lift spirits. This is why they decided to give away free glass floats to frontline workers during the ‘stay home, stay safe’ statewide order.

LCSD provides guide to distance learning MAX KIRKENDALL newsguardeditor@countrymedia.net
School budget, distance learning and graduation. These are just some of the topics Lincoln County School District (LCSD) Superintendent Dr. Karen Gray addressed in her latest update. “I hope that everyone is finding a way to stay positive and uplifted,” Dr. Gray said. “It is going to take giant reserves of strength and resilience to keep on going and doing the best for our children, staff and families. Our deep love and abiding care of our children will help to develop those reserves in each one of us and help us to keep marching forward.” The LCSD is currently entering ‘budget season’ and held their first bud-
get committee meeting last week in Newport and via Zoom. The committee discussed the State School Fund, which is the funding behind school districts including what happens with the newly approved Student Investment Account funding. More information on how those funds will be used will be coming in the future. In the mean time, LCSD is currently working on giving out athletic refunds to the families who have already paid fees for the spring sports season. “We may have other refunds to plan for as well,” Dr. Gray said. “More information about how to do that will be forthcoming soon.” This past week, LCSD rolled out their Distance Learning for All (DLFA)
program for students. DLFA is a digital, computer based, video based approach to education. LCSD understands that not all kids are going to access education

On April 15, Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital was notified that there might be radioactive material at the demolition site of the old hospital, prompting a Code Orange to be called at the new hospital and some other buildings on campus. “Our emergency services partners were stellar in taking steps to keep our patients and staff safe,” said Lesley Ogden, MD, CEO of Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital. “I’m relieved to know that we do not have hazardous materials at our job site or our new hospital, and so pleased at the quick response by all involved.” Starting on March 30, the empty and abated old hospital building has been in the process of being torn down and hauled away. On April 14 a semi truck containing debris from the hospital demolition site and other materials not from that site arrived at the Coffin Butte landfill outside of Adair, Oregon. The debris recorded levels of radiation coming from the truckload and the truck was safely moved and quarantined. Out of caution, a Code Orange (hazardous materi-
