The owners of Left Coast Coffee Company have found that it can be difficult in times like these when small businesses across the country are struggling to deal with the restrictions COVID-19 has created.

However, this pandemic will not be stopping the generosity of the Hasletts, which is why they’ve launched

a Fuel a Frontliner campaign to give to lift the spirits of others.

In 2007, the Hasletts operated Pacific Grind Café in south Lincoln City for several years while serving their coffee. With the birth of their twins six years ago, the couple looked for a smaller business, and decided to cre-

LCPD officers involved in shooting, suspect pronounced dead THE NEWS GUARD

On Thursday, April 2, at about 10:40 p.m., Lincoln City Police Officers were in an officer-involved-shooting in the parking lot of the Rite Aid Store located at 4041 NW Logan Road in Lincoln City.

The involved officers were uninjured and the suspect was transported to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital where lifesaving efforts took place. However, the suspect was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Per Lincoln County Deadly Force Protocols, the Oregon State Police (OSP) was called in and is leading the investigation in cooperation with the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office. The involved officers have been placed on paid administrative leave as is standard practice for these events.

For small businesses in Lincoln County, they’ve been forced to navigate the developing regulations for operation during the worldwide pandemic, COVID-19. And for some, this has sparked ingenuity and resourcefulness that may pay dividends for their business in the long run. One of these businesses is Beachcrest Brewing Company in Gleneden Beach.

White has been faced with new challenges almost daily as he has shifted operations to a walk up window open Wednesday through Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. But after a few weeks, White said they’ve become acclimated to how things are working these days.

“The challenges have been with shifting our whole approach to our customers (our walk-up window, limited deliveries, communicating to our customer base), our product (shifting to cans, bottles and growlers and away from pouring pints in the taproom) and overall operation of the business,” White said.

“Oddly, there’s been a huge positive side to all this, and we’re trying to see the silver lining in it all.”

That silver lining came in the form of cans of beer. As they shifted their approach, White said this gave them the opportunity to purchase a beer canning machine to provide small in-house canning and bottling.

“We’ve had intentions to start our own canning

for a while and this was the reason to get it done,” White said. “I’m glad we’ll be able to offer packaged to-go options to customers when things return to normal. The reception of the cans has been great.”

Beachcrest is currently offering growler fills, bottles of their Belgian and BarrelAged line, as well as some locally sourced wines and ciders. And as always, gift cards, apparel and merchandise.

As test results continue to trickle in statewide for COVID-19 (Coronavirus), state totals continue to rise, as does Lincoln County’s.

On March 29, Lincoln County Public Health announced its first case of COVID-19 among county residents. The person is over the age of 55 and is hospitalized outside of Lincoln County. The individual had no known contact with a confirmed case, and had not traveled from a country where the virus is circulating, so the case was being investigated as a community-acquired case.

Lincoln County Public Health also stated the patient was outside of the county when they developed symptoms and has not returned since being hospitalized.

“I can only imagine the concern among the family and friends of this person. My concerns and positive thoughts go out to the patient and his/her family; may he/she have a speedy recovery,” said David Long, M.D., Health Officer for Lincoln County.

“The Public Health system as well as Samaritan Health Services are on high alert and geared up to care for all patients who

are affected by the Coronavirus.”

On March 31, Lincoln County had it’s second case, an individual in their 20s and had contact with a person confirmed to have COVID-19. The person is not hospitalized and is self-isolating per Public Health guidelines.

“As a public health department, we are prepared to start seeing more positives and to take action to help keep people safe,” said Nicole Fields, Deputy Director of Public Health. “However, that certainly doesn’t make the news of another positive case any

easier to hear. We’re a small community, and these are our friends and neighbors.”

The following day, a third county resident received a positive test result. This individual is in the “over 80” age range and had contact with a person confirmed to have COVID-19. The person is not hospitalized and is self-isolating per Public Health guidelines.

It was later revealed in a video by Lincoln County Commissioner Doug Hunt that the first three cases were all linked.

“Whenever we get a new positive COVID-19 case, Lincoln County Public Health interviews the patient who tested positive. This helps us determine who they had contact with that might be at risk of getting COVID-19,” Fields said. “When we identify someone who might be at risk, Public Health will call them and explain the circumstances. This happens within a few hours.”

Public Health then asks the person at risk to self-quarantine for 14 days after their last contact with the person that tested positive. During this time they monitor themselves for any potential symptoms while staying at home and avoiding contact with others. If they develop symptoms, they

will work with providers to determine if they should be tested.

“Public health consistently investigates disease outbreaks and will continue to do so, but what is important during this pandemic is that we all stay home and stay safe,” Fields said.

On April 2, County Public Health announced it’s fourth case, individual is in their 30s, who had no known contact with a confirmed case. That case is being investigated as a community-acquired case. The person is not hospitalized and is self-isolating per Public Health guidelines.

Fields said the health department has seen an uptick in questions surrounding city specific information. However, due to patient privacy, the health department has only released information regarding county of residence.

“Beyond that, we realize there have been limitations with testing and that it is unlikely that everyone who has COVID-19 has been tested,” Fields said. “In order to best protect you and your loved ones, please ask yourself, ‘What would I do differently if I knew there was a case in my city?’ and then take those actions to keep yourself as safe as possible.”

Updated projections from health researchers show that there is “strong evidence that measures currently in place in Oregon are reducing transmission of COVID-19 (Coronavirus),” according to the latest models.

The most recent data from the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) suggest that current social distancing measures could cut transmission rates between 50%-70% if Oregonians maintain these limitations on virus-spreading interactions into early May. If Oregonians can maintain current social distancing efforts and the current projections hold true, the

state could meet the likely demand for hospital beds under current strategies.

According to the latest report, researchers estimate that Oregon has slightly higher numbers of current infections than previously assessed, based on an increase in reported cases from earlier time points.

COVID-19 infections Under current social distancing conditions with the cooperation of most Oregonians to Stay Home, Save Lives, it is estimated that in early May, Oregon would have over 4,000 cumulative infections and 200-1,200 active infections. However, if the state were to reopen non-essential businesses (while keeping schools

closed), the number of new infections would spike to as many as 3,500 active infections by early May. Missing that authentic movie theater experience during your quarantine?

Luckily, the wait is over as the Lincoln City Bijou Theatre is bringing that experience to the comfort of your home.

The local theatre launched their Virtual Cinema experience April 3, with a pair of independent films. A virtual cinema is a new way for audiences to watch latest releases from the safety of their homes during this unprecedented time while also supporting your favorite local independent theater, like the Bijou, who will receive a percentage of the ticket price.

Longtime owners Betsy and Keith Altomare have been brainstorming ideas for the community every since the news broke regarding the closure of movie theaters due to COVID-19.

“I’m connected to a countrywide art group and they’ve talking about a few different ideas and what to do,” Betsy said. “This was

something that many of them are giving a try.”

To purchase ‘tickets’ movie lovers can visit the Bijou website (cinemalovers.com) and click on the ‘TICKETS’ link of the films they are presenting, enter your email address and your credit card or PayPal information and you’re set.

Once the film is rented, it will be available to view for several days once you’ve started watching.

The rental prices will vary but most are between $10 - $12.

“We’ll mostly be showing independent films and maybe a big one here and there, it’s a limited selection but nothing outside of the norm of what we would be showing at the Bijou,” Betsy said.

The first two films will be ‘Extra Ordinary,’ an Irish comedy about a small town driving instructor with supernatural abilities, and the other film is Phoenix, Oregon, which was shown earlier at the Bijou during the Oregon-Made Film Festival.

Films can easily be watched on the computer, smartphone, or tablet, or cast to your Smart-TV or Google Chromecast. To add to your theater experience, the Bijou will be open 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. to serve fresh popcorn, candy, drinks and other goodies. They’ll even provide curbside service for anyone who prefers it.

During uncertain times, the Altomare’s are doing what they

can to keep their business afloat, and so far, they’ve received a lot of encouragement from the community.

“We’ve had some support from the community already,” Betsy said. “A lot of people are buying gift cards for future use and we set up a PayPal accepting donations and we’ve had several supporters donate.”

The unique virtual cinema experience is something that

will make the best out of a tough situation. But the Altomare said it won’t be something they’ll look to continue when they reopen.

“I think it’s something other theaters will consider depending on how long this lasts,” Betsy said.

“I’m not sure if this is something we’ll want to make a regular thing, because we enjoy the big screen experience of course.”

With the multitude of streaming services available, Betsy said they don’t feel that will deter Bijou supporters from streaming their films.

“I think there are a lot of choices for films online, but we’ve gone digital before when we closed for a while and we had a lot of support because people like the Bijou and they enjoy helping us out,” Betsy said. “During this time, we need to support other businesses in our town, not just us, because we all work together and keep our town going.

“Everyone stay safe and enjoy watching films from the comfort of your home.”

Kiwanis Club, Cultural Center team up for virtual egg hunting event THE NEWS GUARD

Every year, on the Saturday before Easter, hundreds of children gather at Regatta Park.

Just before noon, they arrange themselves by age and wait with their baskets behind the line. They visit with the Easter Bunny and pose for their photos, as they wait for the countdown. At the strike of noon, they rush the grassy hillside, looking for colorful eggs that the Kiwanis have packed with candy, coins and treats.

It’s over in five minutes – but for Lincoln City families, those are some of the best five minutes of the year.

Until this year, that is, when

the stay-at-home order due to the COVID-19 pandemic will prevent this crowded annual event from taking place. There will be no mad dash through the grass, no unexpected downpour, no arrival of the Easter Bunny by firetruck.

But don’t despair, parents – the Kiwanis Club of Lincoln City and the Lincoln City Cultural Center have partnered together to help you make those memories and take those photos. This year, the Kiwanians will be helping the community come together, separately, with a DIY Easter Egg Hunt.

This event may be a little bit virtual, but the candy (and the fun) will be very real.

If the technology cooperates, the kids will still hear the countdown at noon.

committee chair for the annual event. “This event isn’t just a gift for the kids – we love it, too. Let’s all enjoy it, in the best way we can.”

On April Fool’s Day, 1944, two people pledged to love, honor and cherish each other until death do them part.

It was no joke.

Seventy six years later, Russell and Judy Cleveland celebrate a love lived well.

“The original wedding date was supposed to be sometime in March,” said Susan Pickering, daughter of the Cleveland’s.

Russ, a Marine who was on his way home from the battle on Guadalcanal, had contracted malaria.

He was waiting for the train to take him home and had a malaria attack, missing his train. And his wedding.

Frantic family members cancelled the wedding and rescheduled it for the only date that was available; April Fool’s Day. Russ had to get better before he could arrive home and get married.

“When Dad arrived and got out of the car, he had lost so much weight from the malaria that Mom hardly recognized him,” Pickering said.

“We’re really thankful for Russ and Judy’s family for making this event happen. We all need something to celebrate these days and love is the best reason of all.”

Russ and Judy moved to the Lincoln City area in the 1980’s.

Their son, Alex Murphy, formally titled Russ, Jr. served as president of Salishan Resort Properties, Inc. Their daughter, Susan Pickering, also lives in Lincoln City.

Russ, a long-time Rotarian, and Judy were involved in many charitable and civic endeavors.

Judy volunteered at the Driftwood Public Library. Together, Russ and Judy helped to develop the trails in open spaces around Lincoln City. They’ve created a legacy of involvement and community in the Lincoln City area.

They found success serving locals and visitors alike, and continued to build their website through a local business, Coast Commerce Solutions.

All hotel reservations will be automatically canceled through closure in order to make the situation easier for guests. Guests with a res-

ervation after the 15th will be notified of their reservation status if the closure is extended.

This situation is fluid and will be regularly re-evaluated, which may reduce or extend this time frame based upon the status of the pandemic, CWCR said.

“We will continue to monitor developments through the Centers for Disease Control and the Oregon Health Authority,” CWCR said.

Chinook Winds properties will remained closed until at least April 15.

“We’ve developed a very strong wholesale accounts over the last couple of years.

There’s a lot of different café’s that use us, the IGA in Lincoln City carries us on their retail shelves, we work with Dockside Charters, Meredith Lodging. We provide coffee for them,” JB said.

But with the news of COVID-19 sweeping the country, the Hasletts were faced with some serious challenges.

“It was a particularly

tough 10 days or so leading up to when we closed the café on March 22,” JB said.

“Each day, we kept kind of changing our procedures and sanitizing more and finding our customer demographic shifting, as well as our own understanding of everything. So we closed our doors, even though we felt like we could serve a clean product, it was just becoming more and more challenging to do that and it just didn’t feel like it was the right thing to keep doing.”

Shutting down the café created an uncertainty that had the Hasletts reeling a bit.

“100% of our income for our household comes from this business,” JB said. “My wife and I work here and we have six-year-old twins. So we had no idea what was going to happen, there was no relief or anything like that.”

The closure sparked a new business model that shifted everything online.

Assuming it was going to be a short term closure, the Hasletts came up with this idea to sell 500 pounds of coffee in two weeks, which would help meet the needs of his family and company.

Hoping for strong community support, the Hasletts got it.

“We started on that campaign and people just started blowing us up and just pouring through our website and started buying coffee as gifts to other people,” JB said. “I made a video at one point and I was just really overwhelmed by the kindness and the response of people and how we were kind of embraced by the community we’ve lived in now for 15 years. So it was

just amazing.”

The Hasletts nearly reached their goal, and JB said they did about as good as they would have done profit wise if they were open during spring break. As they saw the outpouring of support, it sparked another idea.

“One particular high school friend of mine, hopped online and bought 10 bags of coffee, and said, ‘Hey, I want you to go give these around to people in your community. Doctors, nurses, grocery clerks, whoever’s out there doing the right thing,’” JB said. “That just really touched me and it kind of touched us all. It’s our whole purpose of being in the coffee business, to serve the community.”

This week, Left Coast Coffee launched their Fuel a Frontliner campaign, which allows anyone to donate coffee directly to the frontline of the COVID-19 crisis. Whether it’s a paramedic, doctor, nurse, firefighter, grocery store worker, or food supply chain worker, these people are putting their health on the line to help people get through this. I have a multitude of Associates (including my pregnant fiancée) who work there. Jennifer is NOT doing all she can to keep her residents and staff safe. Since the MANDATORY six foot rule was put into place, she has orchestrated two mandatory all staff meetings and one Medical Tech meeting in all three staff were shoulder to shoulder.

One could argue that “everybody makes mistakes,” but she was contacted by Westmont’s home office after the first mandatory all staff meeting and was advised strongly against it and was given alternative methods to keep her employees in the loop with every-

munity based mental health and peer support services to the most vulnerable citizens. In this way we are able to provide a comprehensive continuum of care to the most vulnerable population, the highest users health care services.

We accomplished this in partnership with Samaritan Health Services, Lincoln County Health and Human Services, Sheriff Curtis Landers, Community Justice, Courts and other critical community partners.

Most importantly and critically, we need to be mindful as citizens of the value of experience during a time of national public health and economic crises. From my own direct experience, Commissioner Hall knows how to navigate the complex landscape of County and State government, and execute effectively. We need Claire at the helm!

Tourism has increased at such an exponential number, I talked to numerous businesses this winter and they all said winter business is booming. Realtors have all homes snatched up with no inventory, Burger 101 posted they needed to open a 2nd kitchen to be able to keep up, Kyllos had lines out the door on winter weekdays, the grocery stores seem to hardly ever have slow times anymore, etc.etc.

If the Salem airport still intends on opening to commercial flights again soon this will bombard the county with new tourists. And now thing going on.

Instead of listening to her peers, she’s continuing on with her meetings. I’m so worried about the well being of the residents, as well as the well being of my fiancée. Just two days before this message is when she made the decision that all staffers need to wear a mask. I found out that they are only disinfecting their facemasks with Lysol. This behavior needs to stop before a lot of people get sick...

I just find it very disheartening that she’s not doing ALL she can to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

I worry that a lot of people at that facility will be affected in the near future. The residents’ power of attorney have a right to know the actual conditions that their parents/ grandparents are in right now.

Property Owners Have Rights VRD’s, motels, traffic, crowded beaches, casino, empty second homes, COVID-19.

There is a lot of anger, from local residents, when we see out of state plates at some residence that may or may not be Vacation Rental Dwellings.

The traffic and all of the above are gone, except for the second homes, and some of the owners.

Gone is also over $900,000 a month in revenue that Lincoln City gets from rental tax, from the VRD’s, motels, hotels, etc. So, what we love to hate, also funds all of the great parks, community center, public services and many other things we take for granted.

Most small towns don’t get that there will guaranteed be a BIG change coming: the entire country is now setup to work remotely as well as many people developing a fear of the larger cities they now live in due to COVID-19.

When we come out of this it’s almost guaranteed that a significant number of people will now continue to work virtual and be able to live wherever they want.

At a minimum workers from the valley will be able to live remotely full time and have to make minimal travel to the offices. I think now is the time to take advantage of this and start proactively making changes that would allow our community to have a more stable full time population, more year round business and less dependency on tourists.

Back to the second homes, the owners pay the same amount of property tax that full time residents pay, and many, do not rent their homes out. Property owners have the right to use their properties as they want.

This is how I’m changing the world and the perception of law enforcement,” Gouge said. “So many of us truly care and we work within the boundaries we are given.

When I see somebody in need, it’s obvious to me that I’m meant to be in that place.”

Driving an unmarked vehicle and dressed in a casual manner will be the modus operandi for Gouge

and Scott, since the goal is to put people in need at ease. This dynamic duo will also be meeting with local social service organizations, law enforcement agencies, and support service providers to familiarize them with COMET and the mission at hand.

“We want them to drive the county and start making connections with people who appear to be in need.

We also want them to connect to services to let them know we are up and running. The overarching role

is to help people and that starts by building trust,” Fisher noted.

While the Sheriff’s Office was able to assign a deputy to this role, LCHC sought and received an Integrated Behavioral Health Services Supplemental Funding grant (HRSA-19-100) from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

The goal? Connecting people on the verge of crisis with much-needed resources before they land in jail or a hospital emergency room is the mission of the Community Outreach and Mental Health Enhancement Team (COMET).

Jointly formed by the Behavioral Health department of the Lincoln Community Health Center (LCHC) and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, this mobile response team meets with clients in the field to make referrals and connect vulnerable people with services.

“It could be that someone calls law enforcement because of a person yelling and talking to themselves in a public place,” explained Sheryl Fisher, director of Behavioral Health at LCHC. “Maybe a person is off medications and not functioning well enough to call for help.

This team can reach out to people, help them feel safe, and connect them with primary care services and other assistance.”

Pairing these initial contacts with follow-up care will help prevent a future crisis if the program meets its goals.

The demand for this unique type of service is undeniable. Lt. Adam Shanks, with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, has been in law enforcement for 23 years and says the upturn in these kinds of calls has been remarkable.

“In my early days, the calls for service were mostly tagged as a suspicious person or a suspicious activity.

Most calls now are related to an emotionally-disturbed person and those calls have increased dramatically over

Gouge, a Lincoln City native with more than seven years of law enforcement experience, has consistently made a practice of going above and beyond to help people, including carrying extra necessities in her patrol car to share with those in need. With the formation of the mobile outreach unit, she’ll now spend her week with people, overcoming the barriers to help.

“Often we see red flags thrown up, but as a patrol deputy, you don’t have enough time to put into issues that may not even be a crime,” Gouge said.

That all changes with the formation of COMET. “Helping them should be much more seamless and we should get to people before it becomes a situation where they hurt somebody or themselves,” Gouge noted.

Scott, a licensed professional counselor and a certified drug and alcohol counselor, is equally passionate about the new program, in part because she saw how something similar benefited people in Benton County.

“I noticed that it made a huge difference in how quickly people could access services in a crisis,” Scott said. “Once we started coordinating with law enforcement (in Benton County), it just seemed to create a lot more efficient collaboration.”

Three arrested for role in Otis robbery, authorities search for fourth suspect THE NEWS GUARD

On March 30, at approximately 7:40 p.m., the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a fight in progress near the 1400 block of North Bank Rd in Otis.

The caller, who was not involved in the fight, reported 4-6 subjects fighting on the side of the road. The caller reported there appeared to be two silver colored vehicles associated with the fight.

The caller heard someone yelling “call the cops.”

Sgt. Karl Vertner was on patrol less than a mile from the location at the time of the reported incident. Upon his arrival, he determined both silver vehicles had left the scene. Sgt. Vertner contacted a group of three young adults.

The group reported they had been robbed of their silver Toyota Camry at gunpoint. The group reported the suspects fled the scene eastbound on North Bank Rd. The victims reported that there were four suspects in total, however, only two of the suspects forced them out of their vehicle at

gunpoint.

Sgt. Vertner broadcasted an Attempt To Locate for the silver Toyota Camry and a silver Dodge Challenger.

During the course of this investigation, law enforcement officers learned both parties were acquainted, and this was not a random act.

At approximately 8:02 p.m., officers with the Lincoln City Police Department located the stolen Toyota Camry traveling on SW Bard Road in Lincoln City. Officers conducted a high risk traffic stop of the vehicle and apprehended Nicholas Allen Wright, 30, of Otis.

Inside the vehicle officers located a loaded .22 caliber rifle.

This rifle matched the description of the gun used in the crime.

Wright is currently lodged at the Lincoln County Jail on charges of Recklessly Endangering, First Degree Theft, First Degree Robbery, Menacing, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle and several weapons charges. His bail is set at $100,000.

Deputy Dowty conducted a high risk traffic stop on the vehicle. The driver, Ruben Zamudio Jr., 30, of

Newport was taken into custody for his role in the robbery.

Zamudio Jr. is currently lodged at the Lincoln County Jail on charges of Criminal Conspiricy, First Degree Theft, First Degree Robbery and Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle. His bail is set at

$250,000.

On April 1, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Deputies with the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Grand Ronde Tribal Police, located and apprehended the third outstanding suspect, Kimmia Kay Whittlinger, 26, of Lincoln City.

Whittlinger was transported to Lincoln County Jail and lodged on charges of Criminal Conspiracy, First Degree Theft and First Degree Robbery. Her bail is set at $400,000 The fourth outstanding suspect, Jacob Leeland Lunstedt, 27, should be considered armed and dangerous. Beginning April 3, Lakeview Senior Living connected their residents with friends and family around the country.

“We’ve been working with the Stay Home, Save Lives mandate for several weeks now, about a week before the rest of the senior communities around Oregon,” said Jennifer Whitmyer, Executive Director of Lakeview Senior Living.

“Now we’re working to connect our residents and their loved ones.”

Lakeview Senior Living received delivery of a number of iPads sent by their mother company, Westmont Living, and have set

up a schedule for residents and families to meet in the Cloud to start this week.

“Stay Home, Save Lives means that no one goes in or out of our community unless it’s medically necessary,” explained Whitmyer.

“We don’t have the corona virus here and we want to keep it that way. The best way to do that is make sure to keep the virus out of our building.”

Employees, doctors, nurses, and other medically necessary personnel are allowed into Lakeview Senior Living after having undergone testing for fever and answering a series of questions.

“This means that our residents and families

haven’t seen each other in a while,” said Whitmyer. “Our Westmont Living team has made it possible for us to make these virtual family reunions happen and we’re super excited for our residents and families to talk and see each other again.”

Continued fishing and hunting depends on social distancing THE NEWS GUARD

Most fishing and hunting seasons remain open in Oregon, but participants should continue to comply with social distancing and other guidelines set forth in the Governor’s Stay Home, Save Lives order, says the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW).

While ODFW does not enforce regulations such as the Governor’s Order, a significant number of ODFW staff who work in the field are also monitoring recreational use at many fishing, hunting and wildlife viewing locations in the course of their regular duties. US Coast Guard, Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, Oregon State Police, Oregon State Sherriffs’ Association and other entities are also observing the actions by Oregonians and potentially visitors to Oregon. Adherence to the order while recreating can help prevent more closures.

With good weather and low tides coming up later in spring/summer, ODFW is also stepping up monitoring of clamming on the coast.

Staff will be out this weekend to monitor recreational and commercial harvest of razor clams along beaches in Clatsop County to determine the level of harvest and behavior of clammers (e.g. social distancing).

Information gathered from this weekend’s surveys will help inform decisions about future actions regarding harvest seasons during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ll continue to monitor fisheries and do everything in our power to be sure it isn’t contributing to the transmission of the virus,” said Director Curt Melcher. “If we do see anglers, clammers or others are not following the guidelines and endangering themselves and others, then we may need to modify fishing seasons.”

ODFW has been working with the Governor’s office and other state agencies to address crowding and health concerns related to COVID-19, and encouraging adherence to the Stay Home, Save Lives order.

The order does allow for outdoor recreation as long as the guidelines for social distancing are followed.

Just as hiking and biking are allowed, getting outdoors and fishing is a healthy way to get fresh air and exercise during this difficult time provided the guidelines are followed.

OSAA decides not to rule out spring sports yet during meeting THE NEWS GUARD

The Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) Executive Board held an online meeting this week to discuss the latest developments regarding the COVID-19 situation. The Board decided to continue its current suspension of spring activities but chose not to cancel any other remaining state championships at this time.

Up to this point the Board has aligned its decisions regarding OSAA’s education-based activities with the governor’s school closure orders and plans to continue on that path. Board member discussion centered around the latest information sent out from the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) earlier this week stating that there is a very real potential that students may not return to school this academic year.

If the governor orders that in-person student learning is shut down for the remainder of this school year, the OSAA will continue to align with the school closures and also cancel its spring activities and state championships.

The OSAA staff has been in communication with all Spring state championship venues and shared potential challenges they

In particular, Western Oregon University has shut down all of its athletic facilities until June 30 and will not be able to host the 3A, 2A, 1A Track and Field State Championships. Staff members are contacting other potential track venues to determine interest and availability.

Board members discussed the potential of shifting Spring activities and state championships into the summer and are not supportive of that concept at this time.

Concerns included increased staffing and personnel costs for school districts already facing uncertain financial impacts, scheduling issues regarding facility availability,

plus student/family commitments for jobs, travel, etc.

The OSAA staff has been working with Dr. Mick Koester, our Chief Medical Advisor and chair of the OSAA’s Sports Medicine Advisory Committee, to develop acclimatization guidelines that the Board approved to emphasize student safety if schools are able to reconvene this spring.
