Community members gathered at McCormick Park Saturday, Aug. 7 for the annual St. Helens Citizens Day celebration. Organizers said the day focuses on making and strengthening community connections and celebrates community members and the city’s McCormick Park. St. Helens Mayor Rick Scoll said this Citizens Day in the Park was a welcoming event for the entire community. “Because of the pandemic, we’ve been all cooped up,” he said. “And this day is a way to disconnect from technology and get out to meet people you may not have been able to meet in the city before. Neighbors meeting neighbors, and we are just welcoming everybody to one of our big and beautiful parks. It is also a great occasion for the Portland Trailblazers and Moda assistance in providing a new all abilities playground at the park, the largest in Oregon.” Activities included family-friendly events, a ribbon cutting for the new play equipment at the park, live music, community booths, vintage cars on display, and a free community barbecue offered by members of the St. Helens City Council. The event had been cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
