Ben Núñez left us on Dec. 1, last year, but, like he did so graciously in life, he wanted to sup port organizations he held close to his heart by leave behind one final gift. Gifts that would impact the community well after his time here hadLastpassed.week, his son, also named Ben, delivered $100,000 to Til lamook Bay Community College Foundation, $50,000 to the Til lamook YMCA and $25,000 to the Netarts WEBS, all organizations Ben sat on boards and supported for years through volunteering or through financial support. Ben was a gifted businessman with many talents, patience and a huge heart for helping others. When the late Ben Nunez and his late wife Priscilla first visited the Terimore Motel in Netarts on vaca tion from California in 1989, Ben said his wife Priscilla instantly fell in love with it, and joked that he should buy it for her. He really didn’t intend to purchase the motel on the Oregon Coast, saying to his wife, it would never pay off. He had a good job in Fresno CA as an accountant and loved what he did for a living, so purchasing a motel was not something he believed would be a good move financially for the couple. But Ben loved his wife and wanted to give her everything she wanted, even if that meant buying a motel she fell in love with while on vacation. When Priscilla passed away sev eral years ago, Ben decided to keep improving on his gift to his wife. With Ben’s passing, his estate would be turned over to his son Ben to oversee and to carry out his father’s wishes. “The Foundation Board of Direc tors is grateful Ben included a gift to the TBCC Foundation in his estate plan to benefit the Benjamin G. Nunez and Priscilla Gleason Nunez Endowment,” Britta Lawrence, Ex Ben Núñez delivers $100,000 gift his father left to Tillamook Bay Community College Foundation Director Britta Lawrence and TBCC President Dr. Ross Tomlin. Staff Moonlight Madness was a huge success according to event organizers and had downtown Tillamook bustling with people for the family friendly event last Friday on the AfterPlaza.atwo year hiatus, the Tillamook Revitalization Associa tion (TRA) brought back some fun events and adding some new twists to the annual event. Last Friday evening, Second Street including the Plaza and a block west was chalk full of kids games, vendors, live music, food and of course specials for those shopping. TillaWheels Car Club even showed up to display their nice rides as an added feature. According to several business owners the night of the event, all said they did well with a couple stat ing it was a record day in sales due to the increased traffic downtown. Second street west of the plaza between Main and Ivy was also closed to traffic with stores staying open and vendors staying open later than normal business hours. The Joel Baker Band with Scott Casey and others took the stage from 6 to 10 p.m. with DJ music and announcements throughout the eve ning. The band was a hit with kids dancing, and others sitting around enjoying some shaved ice while tak ing in the activities.

Ashley Tike For the Herald In the Tillamook County Com munity Update held August 23rd, Representative David Gom berg expressed how important it is for the community to obey burn bans and fire restrictions currently in place. “Even though the fire cov erage this season is dramatically reduced in comparison to previous years, we need to remain diligent in following rules put in place by the Oregon Department of Forestry,” Gomberg said. The Oregon Department of For estry released a “Fire Restrictions” guide on their Tillamook State blog. The post clarifies what “Fire Restrictions” mean for your next visit to the Tillamook State Forest. “For folks headed out to rural areas or to the Tillamook State Forest, there are several things to keep in mind as you prepare for your trip and while you are out in the woods during regulated use,” reads the ODF blog post, “Planning ahead and practicing fire safety will not only help keep Oregon’s forests green, it may just save you a citation.”TheNorthwest Oregon Forest Protective Association (NWOF PA), which includes the Tillamook State Forest, declared Fire Season and simultaneously entered into the Regulated Use portion of fire season.According to ODF, while you are traveling through forests and rural areas, unless you are on a state highway, county road or driveway, each vehicle must have one round pointed shovel which has a face not less than 8 inches wide and a handle not less than 26 inches long and either one gallon of water or one operational 2½ pound or larger fire extinguisher.
Cooking in the forest Methods used to cook de pend on the fire danger level.
“There is definitely a lack of education when it comes to the dairy industry,” Kris tin added. “That is some thing that affects all dairies.”
If the fire danger level is MODERATE or HIGH, campfires are only allowed in the metal fire pits installed by the Oregon Department of Forestry, unless posted otherwise. If the fire danger level is EXTREME, campfires are prohibited on all Oregon Department of Forestry pro tected lands.

Now we get it Riley, fromOregon, about 100 miles east of Bend. Each of our kids gets really excited when it’s their turn!” The Bennett’s also credit their employees as another crucial part of their success. “We have some incredible employees,” Kirstin stressed. “We have between five and ten, depending on the time of year. One of our employ ees, Genaro Tapia, has been with us now for over 18 years.”When it comes to chal lenges, Venture Valley Farms, not unlike other dairy farms in the county, have had their share of similar ones but also some that are unique. “Just like other dairies, the rising costs of every thing is one,” Blaise said. “And the winters, with so much wet weather. The elk have been another problem. We’ve had to build fences to keep them out, to keep them from eating all the feed.” And getting water in the summers has been another challenge for them that most other dairies in the county do not “Weface.don’t have any rivers near us, so we have to use city water,” Blaise ex plained. “We’ve drilled sev eral wells with no success, and city water is expensive.”

We also make as much of our own feed as we can and help other farms produce their own “Becausefeed.”ofthe high standards of our dairy, a lot of people come out to take tours,” Kirstin said. “We have had visitors from as far as Australia.”Butthecontinued success of the farm was not without sacrifice and andparentsBlaise’sperseverance.“Whengrand(JackSharon)
Today the farm is owned by Norm and Dory Bennett, Norm and Dory’s son Blaise, his wife, Kirstin, and their children, Lila, Bray ton, Leighna, and Tucker.
The values of growing up on a dairy farm are another thing Kirstin appreciates. “Kids that grow up on a farm learn a lot of respect for and knowledge of animals as opposed to kids who only see animals when they visit a fair. And dairy farming is a lifestyle for the whole fam ily, not just the guys.”
Equestrian, Hiking, Mountain Bike Trails These trails will remain open unless there is a forest closure. In EXTREME fire danger conditions, motorized access to recreation facilities may not be available. There are many things to consider when planning a trip during Regulated Use time periods. Use the Tillamook State Forest Blog website for more tips like these. For more information or answers to specific questions, please call the Oregon Department of Forestry office nearest you.

A personal message to my readers: I have been away from my desk for most of August, thus no Fencepost…. graduations, graduation parties, wedding showers, weddings----all wonderful times spent with family and friends, almost too wonder ful. The day we got home from California I spent in Urgent Care, then the next day in the emergency room, and a few short days later, back in Urgent Care; all from Influenza A and an allergic reaction to the flu medication. I guess it means I’m too old to “party hardy” with family and friends. As of last week, I was back to writing, so…… Greetings Bay City As I told you last week, some pretty wonderful Bay City citizens had birthdays. One was my friend, Jane Erskine. Yesterday Kin and I got to spend time with her wishing her a happy birthday. I can easily say that she is one of my favorite people to spend time with. Jane was born as a Montana girl and raised in Yakima, Washington and Portland. After graduating from Parkrose High School, she came to Tillamook County to work for a rela tive who owned the grocery store in Neskowin, and later worked for the pharmacy in Cloverdale. I asked her how she met her husband, and, with a twinkle in her eye and love in her voice, she said “At a dance”. Sadly, he died at 46, and she went on to raise their four beautiful daughters. Later, she lost one of her adult daughters to cancer. I know that kind of grief, and I ad mire her courage to carry on. In many ways, Jane reminds me of my five aunties, all from Lebanon, Oregon. They were all women of faith; you might say, pillars holding up the First Christian Church. They were gracious, kind, had loving hearts, and were known for their good humor, and for being very stoic. They stood strong in any storm that came their way. Jane has the same attributes; she gives her love and acceptance of who you are, warts and all, all while looking for the best in you, with no judgment in her heart. To say that I admire Jane greatly is an understate ment. “I love thee my friend”, and happy 94th birthday Jane. And now on to the news Congratulations, Tillamook Bay Community College, and thank you staff, teachers, and President, Dr. Ross Thom lin for providing Tillamook County with a winning com munity college, rated #8 in the nation for providing the best education for an afford able price, making it pos sible for all to have a college experience and education in Tillamook.Iwouldlike to give a shout-out to waitress, Charlee, at The Bakery Next Door for exceptionally good service; all with a great smile and ‘here to help you’ attitude. The owners, Mirra and Adam Bowers, can rest assured that their bakery is in good hands, even when they are not around. The coffee and pastries were great as well. Now that’s a bonus.
Speaking of places for pastries, Bay City’s Downies Cafe has been so busy, with a line of people waiting outside, that I have missed my cin namon rolls and Kin his stack of pancakes. I’m sorry Bay City. Someone didn’t keep Downies under wraps, and now tourists and all the rest of Tillamook County know that the third generation Downie family is still using Grandma Hazel’s recipes. And what does that mean…...It’s home cooking at it’s very best.
News from the Bay City Arts Center There are two upcoming concerts on the schedule. On Saturday, September 17 at 7:00 PM the Sedona Fire band out of Manzanita will be performing. This group features rich vocal harmony, guitar, flute, trumpet, cello, keyboard, and hand percus sion. There songs cover a broad range, from jazz standards, to blues, to rock, to pop, to folk classics. On Sunday, October 16, time TBA, Amanda Stanaway and Friends will be bringing her popular mix of “gutsy folk” and soft ballads with, ‘whoknows-what’ surprises. salmon from Tillamook’s bay and rivers, and many a limit of trout from Cape Meares Lake. Our favorite story about Duane fishing was one fall when he and his folks had caught more than 20 coho out of the Tillamook River— none retainable. Duane told his dad, “I’m going to take those pliers away from you.” The community extends its deepest condolences to the Thompson family. I also received word that Luke Rogers, former Cape Meares resident, passed away Aug. 20 at Seaside Providence Hospital. Luke helped with many building projects in Cape Meares. He also created beautiful wooden bowls; several of us here are fortunate to have one. May Luke rest in peace. The Cape Meares Com munity Association (CMCA) held a discussion about the proper use of the Barbara Bennett Community Center and, upon further reflection and review, we ended up where we started. There is a $25 charge for a half day’s use of the center, a $50 fee for a full day’s use, and no charge if the event is open to the public. A person must be a resident or property owner in Cape Meares to be able to reserve the community center. Kathy Burke reminds us that the Cape Meares Labor Day potluck will be held on Sunday, Sept. 4, at 1 p.m. at the Barbara Bennett Commu nity Center. Kathy is bringing a ham. Please bring a dish to serve at least eight people. If you are part of a large group, please bring more than one dish. Sodas and water will be provided by the Cape Meares Community Association. There will be outdoor and indoor seating. Help with setup or clean-up is welcome. Looking forward to seeing you there for a last blast of summer.

And so it begins! I got the first report of a fall salmon caught in the Memaloose pool. Steve Walz hooked a nice, bright 20-lb. Chinook on Aug. 17 and played it to the boat. Unfortu nately, it was a wild Chinook; with the new rules in effect for the Tillamook Basin this fall, Steve had to let it go. But surely a hatchery Chinook or coho will come along soon to help fill the Walzes’ freezer. Thanks for kicking off the season, Steve. A belated happy 70th birth day to Scott Gordon. Family and friends from age five months to 80 years came from as far away as Atlanta, Geor gia, to celebrate the milestone occasion. Mary, Scott’s wife, told me their house was burst ing at the seams. They had a casual luncheon followed by the most delicious chocolate birthday cake from Tilla mook’s own SaraSotas, with beautiful weather for flying kites and a beach walk to end the festivities. Wishing you many more happy years right here in Cape Meares, Scott! Duane Thompson, young est son of longtime Cape Meares residents Sonya and Jerry Thompson, passed away in Reedsville, Ore., on Aug. 16. Duane had been in hospice care for about nine months, with his parents trav eling Highway 6 nearly every week to visit him. For years, Duane had come here often to see his folks and go fishing with them. Duane caught big

All good things must come to an end, and that includes my career in librar ies, as well as my Tales from the Library column. I retired once in April of 2021, but the library kept me on as a stringer. When the staff suddenly found themselves without any management, I had the pleasure of coming back as the interim director for a few months. Now that we have hired a director and a main library manager (hooray for Don and Wendy!), it is time for me to fully experi ence retirement. I have a fam ily, a couple of grandkids, and miles of hiking trails that have been patiently waiting for me. So, let’s commence with the topic of the day. Have you ever read any of the classic books by E. B. White? He originally wrote books and articles for the adult reader, but later found much success as a children’s author. Most notable of his titles...Charlotte’s Web, Stuart Little, and The Trumpet of the Swan.Iadore one of his famous quotes because it sums up why I sought out a career in libraries. “A library is a good place to go when you feel unhappy, for there, in a book, you may find encouragement and comfort. A library is a good place to go when you feel bewildered or undecided, for there, in a book, you may have your question answered. Books are good company in sad times and happy times, for books are people—people who have managed to stay alive by hiding between the covers of a book.”
Lisa Greiner Chamber Board President There is a saying in the Chamber industry that “if you’ve seen one chamber, you’ve seen one chamber.” However, since the first Chamber of Commerce was formed in France in 1599 there is one thing they all have in common – advocacy. This week’s Chamber Chatter comes from me as the Board President letting you know that the Cham ber Board is proud to have recently approved our 2022 Collaborative Advocacy Engagement Strategy. This strategy puts a structure in place that provides local governments, businesses, and the community with clear focus areas where they can expect to see the Chamber’s engagement.TheChamber has estab lished the five priority focus areas to determine how and when we engage in public policy and candidate races:
• Housing Tillamook County is facing a severe shortage of affordable housing units. Our community’s housing shortage is multifaceted and has been exacerbated by the number of people moving to Oregon, higher construction costs, inadequate infrastruc ture, and land-use regulations restricting the creation of housing units. The Chamber is committed to working with local government and community partners to create missing middle workforce housing in our community.

Dr. Ross Tomlin President TBCC Summer is finally in full force on the north Oregon coast. With spring being so cold and wet, we are hoping to squeeze as much summer weather as possible out of the season. But the reality is that September is almost here and that means the fall term at TBCC is fast approaching. Registration is open through September 18, with the fall term beginning on September 19. New students for the fall term need to contact a Student Success Coach in Student Services to prepare for regis tration of fall classes. Current students can register online anytime up through September 18.There are many resources available from different sourc es that can help students fund their college classes. Again, Student Success Coaches and Financial Aid Specialists can provide details on these opportunities. Foundation scholarships are also open until September 5. One online application can serve to cover all the scholarships for which each student is qualified. Career to Career Scholarships are also open until September 14. These are for students that have been out of school for at least five years and can cover all tuition for a degree or certificate. TBCC is also starting new programs this fall. A Nursing Assistant certificate program will be offered in September. A new Entrepreneurship op tion within the TBCC online Business Administration program will also be offered starting this fall. The CDL Truck Driving program will start offering weekend courses this fall. Finally, two new transfer programs will begin this year in Sociology and Sociology/Anthropology. We are excited to be offering these new program opportunities this year. We are also looking ahead to next fall to expand on our healthcare programs. The col lege is still on track to have a new nursing program start in fall of 2023. Those students who have completed the required prerequisite classes will be able to apply for the program this coming spring. In addition, we will be offer ing a Para-medicine program in partnership with South western Oregon Community College (SWOCC), where local students who complete the current EMS program will be able to go a second year, taking online classes through SWOCC and labs and clinicals right here at TBCC to earn an AAS to become a Paramedic.Allofour healthcare programs will be located in the new Healthcare Educa tion Building that will be constructed over the coming few years thanks to Tillamook County voters approving our $14.4M bond measure in the May election. But we are continuing to add these new programs to meet the needs of county residents to obtain training for high paying, rewarding careers. If you ever have any questions about any of our programs, please reach out to Student Services and they would love to answer your questions and get you on track to meet your career and educa tional goals.
• Transportation The Chamber supports investment in an efficient, sustainable, and well-main tained transportation system, which is vital to the health of our region’s economy and environment. We will monitor and advocate for transportation services that enhance community livability and support regional eco nomic development includ ing, efficient public transit, multi-modal transportation, and responsible transporta tion system planning.
I like to think of the Til lamook County Libraries in much the same way. Every day, we see patrons who come into our facilities for a multitude of reasons. We never know if the person walking through our doors is estatically happy...or having the worst day of their life. But whatever their emotional sta tus, we know they have come to the right place, for a library is an answer place. While we help many patrons who come in with specific requests for library items, my favorite cus tomers are those who come to the library unsure of what they are looking for. Then a librarian’s job is to help guide people to just the right book (or movie, or magazine) that might make their visit to the library a successful one. It has been a good occupation for someone like me who loves to help people. In closing, I’d like to say I am very grateful the editor of the Headlight Herald agreed to publish these columns and get the good news about our services out to the public. I am happy to leave the library in very capable hands of the new management and am thrilled we are almost fully staffed again! Finally, I hope you take to heart the words of E. B. White, venturing to the library at any time when you feel “bewildered or undecided” about something, and let the cosmos (and the excellent librarians) lead you to the information you are seek ing. If you do that, there is a good chance you will see this retired librarian standing beside you, on the customer side of the counter. Long live
• Regulation & Taxation The Chamber supports a fair and equitable tax system that stimulates growth, in novation and job creation while minimizing compli ance costs and administrative burdens on businesses. The Chamber also supports sound regulatory systems that allow for businesses to operate free of undo hardships. Land use regulations should support economic development and regional vitality. Good stew ardship of public funds is es sential to our local economy operating efficiently.

• Economic Development The Chamber supports state and local government investments into programs and projects that spur on eco nomic development within the region. This includes the protection of funding sources such as lodging taxes, lottery dollars, and urban renewals being applied to economic development within Tilla mook County. It does not escape me that you may still be asking “why is our local Chamber involved in politics?” The an swer is simple – our member ship. The Chamber member ship is made up of diverse local businesses, non-profits, and agencies. In several years’ worth of membership surveys, advocacy shows as high importance to them. On the most recent Chamber membership survey, the fol lowing percentage rated these areas as high importance: 84% - The Chamber IN FORMING AND EDUCAT ING members about issues, opportunities, and problems affecting the business com munity 75% - The Chamber REP RESENTING the interests of businesses with the govern ment on issues that affect the business community. 78% - The Chamber be ing a champion for business friendly, or opposing nega tively impacting, PUBLIC POLICIES.54%-The Chamber sup porting business friendly CANDIDATES for public office (recruit, endorse, etc.). In the same survey we received positive feedback when asked “How does the Chamber do in these areas?” We know we cannot rep resent the interest of each and every member of the Chamber, however through this Board-approved strategy, the Chamber is making an intentional effort to provide a transparent and clear focus on why we make the deci sions we do regarding public policy and candidate engage ment. If you are interested in our full strategy, you can find it at collaborative-advocacytillamookchamber.org/

Club motto: “Serving the Children of Tillamook County”
Six or seven years ago, my wife and I started coming to Rockaway on our own, as the kids had started their own lives. We stayed at a little getaway cabin owned by an old friend. We learned to love walking through downtown, grabbing an ice cream at the Sea Breeze, having a beer at the Sand Dollar while we watched the sun grow closer to the horizon, looking for more grown-up treasures at the Hope Chest, Simply Charming or The Little Crow. Then five years ago, we bought that friend’s little getaway cabin, which we took to calling the Tiny Beach Cot tage. After the 2700-squarefoot home in Tualatin where my kids grew up, went to school, graduated, and moved away, this 540-square-foot 1930 cottage felt like a sea side vacation suite, but on a 24/7Recently,basis. while we were in California on assignment, our oldest daughter’s family came from their home in Montana to stay in our Tiny Beach Cottage. She brought our two grandchildren, who had stayed here with us several times in the past few years. But our daughter and sonin-law had never stayed here. She visited once, when it was still our friend’s little getaway cabin, but we’ve made many changes since then. So our grandchildren, who had been here before, took the lead and showed their parents around the town they had come to love. They took their mom and dad to the Way side. They showed them the Center Market for ice, milk, and other essentials. They took them into the Sea Breeze for ice cream cones and kites. And they took them to Flamingo Jim’s for souvenirs, weird seashell items, and all the other treasures that make themWesmile.started out bringing our children to Rockaway Beach to make memories with them, for them. And now, our grandchildren are bringing their parents here to share their memories and make new ones.I’d love for them to be able to play on the dodgem cars, or swim in the Natatorium, or enjoy the arcade. I think there’s probably still room in town for activities for teens, like our 14- and 16-year-old grandchildren, who have been known to give up the pleasures of our wi-fi and their gaming systems for a stroll downtown, or to sit on the beach with their parents making s’mores (but only at a fire 50 feet from the nearest vegetation—we’ve taught themIt’swell).comforting, beautiful, and yes, a little bittersweet to see that we’ve now contrib uted to the Rockaway Beach memories of three genera tions. The memories may not be exactly the same as those from the Sixties, or the For ties, or before… but they’re just as precious. Memories like these are a huge part of what makes our piece of the Oregon Coast unique, special, and so well Meanwhile, loved.ifyou’re in the mood to make some good (and tasty!) memories of your own, the next French Toast Breakfast benefiting Meals for Seniors is this upcoming Saturday, September 3, from 8 AM to 12 PM. As always, it’s on a donation basis, and all proceeds help fund the senior lunches Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The breakfast is as always held at St. Mary by the Sea, 275 S. Pacific, on the ocean side of 101. The dining hall is located on the north side of the church. Hope to see some of you there.

BUZZ ABOUT BEES
It’s been a banner year for honey production. Remember all that rain we had in early spring? It in creased the nectar production in early blooming plants and blackberries. We have more local, raw honey available than ever before or at least in recent years. It was a huge hit at the county fair. You can find local sources for honey at bridgestoorgwww.tillamookbeekeepers.intheStore.You’llneedcontactsellersdirectly.Whenyouaredrivingoverinthecountyyouwill see 8 foot tall white flowers blooming. That’s knotweed. It’s invasive. The roots don’t hold the river banks in the winter which leads to washouts but it does have one redeeming value. Honey bees love it! It makes a very dark honey that most people reallyWhenlike.a lot of one particu lar nectar plant is in bloom, and I mean A LOT, it’s called a “flow”. We are blessed to have two flows, blackberry and knotweed. The honey made during the blackberry bloom is usually called “mul tifloral” because we don’t know what else the bees flew to. Nothing much else is in bloom when the knotweed is, so we definitely can call it knotweed honey. Bees forage for nectar, pol len, water and propolis. They do this during the second half of their six-week life span. They can fly up to five miles to find what they are looking for but hopefully just fly two miles or less. Amazingly, the honey bees suck the nectar through a hollow tongue, called a proboscis. It’s like a straw. They have two stomachs and put the nectar in their “honey stomach”. Their salivary glands add the enzymes that make honey so healthy. When the foraging bee reaches the hive, she transfers the nectar to a waiting bee who adds more enzymes to it and transfers it to another bee until it is finally put into one of those perfectly formed hexagon cells. One of the amazing things about those cells is that they are designed in such a way that the nectar doesn’t drip out! Nectar has different percentages of water based on what plant it came from and how much rain we’ve had. It could be 40 to 70% water. Those hard-working female house bees fan their wings until the water content is 17%. Some of them stand on the landing board fan ning their wings to create an air current through the hive. When the nectar which is now honey is just right, they cap it over with a thin skim coat of wax. Now it will not ferment. It will last forever.

Sept 7 - Tillamook PUD Operations Manager, Kris Aifdermauer and the Wildfire Mitigation Plan.
Foraging bees end their lives while flying to or from the flowers. Their wings just wear out. It seems to me they must live shorter lives here in Tillamook because of the heavy winds they must fight. Just in case you have forgot ten, all worker bees, house bees and forager bees, are fe males. The drones, which are all male, do nothing but mate but their day is coming. Very soon they will be of no use to the colony and the workers will kick them out of the hive to meet their destiny. To get the capped honey from the comb to a bottle, we extract the combs from the hive under great protest from the bees. Those frames are taken to what is referred to as a “honey house”, a room with a decapping tank and an extractor. The beekeeper skims off the wax and places the now dripping honey frame into the extractor. Our extractor holds twenty frames. Centrifugal force slings the honey into the tank from where it goes through a strainer into a five-gallon bucket. It’s pure joy

Sept 14 - Donald Allgeier - Introduction of Tillamook County Library Director and Update on the County Library system. Sept 21 - Community Giving Award Presentations. Sept 28 - 2022-2023 Kiwanis Club Officer Induction.
Recently, our friend and former Rocka way resident Mike Arsenault posted a photo to social media of the old Dodgem Cars here in Rockaway. The nostalgia in the comments was palpable and sweet, with people recall ing their summers in the ar cade at the back, or swerving and laughing in the bumper cars with friends and family. While my own family started coming here long after the bumper cars had gone, Rockaway provided so many memories for my own kids: Music camp at Twin Rocks Friends Camp. Looking for weird and wonderful treasures at Flamingo Jim’s. Pancake breakfasts at Grumpy’s. Sit ting at the Wayside watching the endless cycle of the waves (though to be fair, that was more for their mom and me).

Winter for them is from October when the last flowers are done blooming until April when the first flowers begin. That’s a long time. We have to feed them sugar water in the spring to prevent starva tion if we took too much honey.Ittakes a lot of work to be a beekeeper, a lot of work. We don’t do it for the honey. We do it because we love honey bees. It’s such an amazing part of nature to watch them do all their “housework” and come and go, carrying out their mis sions.Europeans don’t eat honey as a sweet treat. They take a spoonful of honey every day for its health benefits. Per haps we should do the same! Remember, local honey is available. Check out the Store in our

“I thought we played hard,” Johnson said. “We clearly demonstrated that we have a different element in our passing game this year compared to what we’ve had in the Johnsonpast.”said, the Jamboree confirmed the what he and the squad have felt all month, but it was nice to see that in action against other teams playing real football. “Tanner has a special skill set and we have a good crew of receivers,” Johnson said. “Don’t be shocked if these guys set some Tillamook passing records in 2022.” Johnson is expecting the Mooks will do well, despite not having many home games with the upgrades being done on the field and track at home. “We are pretty high on this year’s team,” Johnson said. “We have a long ways to go like everyone else does, but this group has a good feel to it. We are experienced, we have some game changers and we have some depth. I think the development of our offensive line will be the determining factor in how far we can go.” It won’t be easy for the Mooks, but they are ready for the season and up to the chal lenge of playing most games on the “Weroad.aregoing to have to be absolute road warriors while the field project finishes up,” Johnson added. “Ev eryone is sounding hopeful for the last two games on the schedule to be played on the new surface but no prom ises have been made. We’ll just have to see where its at when that time comes. But we are very excited for what our home facility is going to look like when its all said and done. Its always been a great place to be on a Friday night and its going to be even better when this project is complete.”

Cheesemaker football has begun and played Warrenton, Estacada and Amity in a Jam boree last Friday. According to Coach Kye Johnson, the Mooks scored four touch downs in their 33 offense plays. The Mooks only gave up two scores in the similar amount of defensive plays (drives started at the 40 yard line).
“Snakes! Why did it have to be snakes?!?!” Any fan of the “Indiana Jones and the Lost Ark” mov ie will immediately recognize this line from that classic film. And I must admit that I, too, would have been terrified should I encounter a room full of live snakes. Can’t think of anything more frightening unless it was a room full of spiders. But I digress. I have come to really ap preciate snakes in my garden and I will explain why in a moment.Firsta little background. According to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Oregon has sixteen species of snakes throughout the state and only two of them are venomous. And those –the Pacific rattlesnake and the Western rattlesnake – are found in the eastern parts of the state. They used to be considered one species, but scientists have now grouped them into two separate spe cies, thus upping the count to sixteen snakes. So, most of the snakes in Oregon are non-venomous. This makes them more palat able in my garden, of course. I have two types of snakes that I see on a regular basis. The first are rubber boas. These friendly little guys are generally a solid color of brown or olive green and their skin is very smooth. Their tails are shaped very similar to their heads, too, making them easy to identify. Rubber boas are constrictor snakes, meaning they wrap their bodies around their prey and suffocate them. Think boa constrictor in a mini-version as they only reach about 15 inches as an adult. But they are also considered to be the most docile and non-aggres sive snake in the world and can be handled without fear. They don’t even bite when threatened by humans but can emit a strong-smelling odor that puts off attackers. The prey of the rubber boa is mostly small mammals like mice or the eggs or offspring of other reptiles and snakes. They like to live in the cracks of rocks but don’t like the high temperatures in the east ern parts of the state. So they love the coastal cool weather. (As do I!) Of the other types of nonvenomous snakes, four belong to the genus of garter snakes. And these are the ones most often found in the coastal gar den. Garter snakes of any spe cies are generally a dark color with three colored stripes along the length of their bod ies. I have garter snakes with

yellow stripes, but also ones with dark red stripes instead. I have been able to identify the snake in my garden as being the Northwestern garter snake. This because they are about 17 inches long, have wide variations in their coloration, and their pupils are round. Their diet is mostly slugs and worms. Which is why I encourage them to stay. Garter snakes are the ones I most likely see sunning themselves on a warm August day. At times, my dog steps right over them as they don’t seem to be bothered by her presence. In her case, I think she is more focused on birds and misses the snake right in front of her. What do I do to encourage snakes? For one thing, I have lots of rocks with nooks and crannies to protect them. I set out shallow water features on the ground where they can find water when they need it. And I keep the dog away from the ground holes where the snakes rest and lay eggs. Not much to it. If they are happy, they will stay. There are obviously other snakes in Oregon like the gopher snake, the California mountain king snake, Western ground snake and the ring necked snake. But since most of them are located in Central and Eastern Oregon, they aren’t relevant to the coast. So why are snakes wel come visitors in my gar den? Mostly because they have kept the snail and slug populations down. It doesn’t make sense to me that the garter snakes hunt slugs as the snakes are out during the day and the slugs are nocturnal. But I must admit that between encouraging the snakes and putting used coffee ground around my best plants, I have noticed a decline in slug dam age. A coincidence? Perhaps. But I will continue to monitor the situation before making a decision. In any rate, the snakes do harm to no person or pet, so they are welcome to visit anytime. GARDENINGMATTERS
