chools districts in Tillamook County have made decisions regarding what school will look like in the fall. NeahKah-Nie (NKN) School District, Nestucca Valley School District, and Tillamook School District will begin the school year with comprehensive distance learning. NKN School District made the announcement Thursday, Aug. 6, stating the 2020 school year will begin in a comprehensive distance
learning environment beginning Sept. 14. Superintendent Paul Erlebach wrote in a letter to the community that county-specific metrics released by Gov. Kate Brown, Oregon Health Authority and Oregon Department of Education further warn of the risk in reopening school buildings too soon. “If we bring our students and staff back together, I believe, we will have COVID-19 outbreaks,” Erlebach wrote. Erlebach said COVID-19 outbreaks would require the quaran-
tine of exposed students and staff for several weeks, leading to the breakdown of in-person learning. The repeated opening and closing of classrooms would be disruptive to the learning process. “As your superintendent, it is my obligation – and my priority – to safeguard the wellbeing of each of our students and employees,” Erlebach wrote. “With that being said, I cannot in good faith put health and safety on the line when infection rates are rising and our communities do not have the resources to quickly and effectively
address outbreaks.” The school district will reevaluate the decision to begin in a distance learning environment on a periodic basis based on state and county-level metrics, Elrebach said. He expects the school district to be in a comprehensive distance learning framework through the first nine weeks of the school year, and hope to transition to a hybrid model by Nov. 16. Nestucca Valley School District announced July 28 they would be implementing distance learning for the first quarter of

he 2020 Tillamook County Fair ‘Let the Good Times Grow’ this year with an old-fashioned fair, focused on 4-H/ FFA exhibits, various arts and crafts exhibits, and a reptile room. The 2020 Tillamook County Fair offered local kids and their animals a chance to shine with 4-H/FFA exhibits and the Junior Livestock Auction (JLAC) held Aug. 4-6. Fair board manager Camy VonSeggern said in a previous article, “The fair board has been working hard to ensure that the youth in our county have a chance to participate in traditional 4-H/FFA events and the Junior Livestock Auction this year. We have a well-designed plan for youth fair participation that meets all of the Governor’s guidelines for
public health safety.” The 4-H/FFA and JLAC activities were open to 4-H members and their families only this year, to control the number of people in the 4-H zone. The public attended the fair Aug. 7-8 and celebrated the creativity on display in various exhibits. Face coverings were required in the buildings, as well as social distancing. The public was admitted in groups of 50 in 45-minute time slots. Fairgoers also enjoyed fun exhibits such as Pig n Ford cars, classic cars, old time tractors, large farm equipment, Brad’s World of Reptiles, Long Horn cattle, and some traditional fair food.

Antonette’s Kitchen South is located at 34385 US 101 South in Cloverdale and is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lamers graduated from Nestucca High School in 2001 and went to culinary school. She worked in Portland for 13 years at various restaurants, including Portland City Grill, Jake’s Grill and Sanborns, a breakfast restaurant, which recently closed down during COVID-19. Lamers met her husband, Joel Waits, while in Portland. “I had a kid in 2012 and wanted to come back here and raise him because I just love this

he Tillamook County Creamery Association (TCCA) has released its 2019 Stewardship Report, available at https:// www.tillamook.com/stewardship.html. In 2017, the farmer-owners adopted a Stewardship Charter to hold the co-op accountable to farmers, consumers, suppliers, employees, customers and neighbors. The second annual report highlights TCCA’s progress toward these commitments as the company continues to grow. Paul Snyder, executive vice president of stewardship at TCCA, said TCCA has found new ways to do more with less by being smart and innovative. People who are fantastically skilled in their job field do most of the work that happens. The transportation team did a project around rerouting their truck fleet and decreases its carbon footprint each year. The association is growing business by leaps and bounds every year. In 2017, the board of directors adopted a Stewardship Charter that holds TCCA accountable to their farmers, consumers, suppliers, employees, customers and neighbors. Their stewardship commitments are: thriving farms, healthful cows, inspired consumers, enduring ecosystems, fulfilled employees, and enriched communities. The focus for thriving farms includes providing financial support and incentives for farmer-owners, supporting farmer-owners and milk suppliers with technical assistance programs and focusing on succession planning to preserve farmland. Snyder said a veterinary surgeon and her team are called by farmers day or night. “They go out to help farmers with inspections, they do inspections themselves, they consult with farmers about best practices for animal welfare,” Snyder said. “They respond in the middle of the night when a farmer has a particular issue.” They are TCCA’s action response team for farmers. Animal care is a responsibly TCCA takes extremely seriously, the report said. Snyder said a healthy, relaxed cow is the most productive cow. “Having healthy cows makes all the sense in the world,” Snyder said. “It’s really important to point out that our animal welfare commitments are there because they’re first and foremost the right thing to do.” Snyder said the cows are treated on the same level as farmers, as they are central to the business. In 2019, TCCA focused on providing expert cow care with highly trained professionals, participating in the national Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) program and establishing consistent animal care across the entire milk supply. Seventy-one percent of milk that enters Tillamook and Boardman facilities maintains a somatic cell count below the U.S. average, indicating healthy cows and high-quality milk.

County at 30 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 4 presumptive cases Leadership discusses updates related to COVID-19
Hilary Dorsey Staff Writer Tillamook County Leadership discussed at a community update meeting Friday, Aug. 7, updates related to COVID-19. As of Monday, Aug. 10, there are 30 positive cases in the county, and four presumptive cases. Adventist Health Tillamook President Eric Swanson said the hospital has adequate personal pro-
tective equipment and they continue to do virtual visits. “Across Oregon, there’s 153 people hospitalized with COVID,” Swanson said. The hospital is implementing a thermal imaging scanner in the lobby. Multiple people can be scanned at the same time. “This will be much more accurate than the handheld thermometers that we’re using currently,” Swanson said. “We are
considering using the same technology in the emergency room and in the plaza but there’s some logistical issues we’ve got to get through first.” The scanner will be implemented in the lobby sometime this week. The scanners are being put into effect across Adventist Health. Tillamook County Community Health Centers Administrator Marlene Putman said there were four
new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, Aug. 2, from a multi-family household. As of Aug. 7, the county had a total of 30 positive cases and four presumptive cases. A presumptive case is someone who is assumed to be positive but has not been tested yet. The health center is continuing to conduct testing, Putman said. You do not have to be ill to call the COVID-19 information line at 503-842-3940. The cen-
ter continues to see patients virtually and in person. The Rinehart Clinic is also available to the community. You can reach them at 1-800-368-5812. Tillamook Family Counseling Center continues to provide mobile crisis response and provides some services in person for those who have challenges with technology. Governor Brown reviewing possible travel restrictions
Oregon Gov. Kate Brown is in active conversations about the potential of travel restrictions to slow the spread of COVID-19 between states. Brown’s Press Secretary Liz Merah responded in a statement to sister publication Curry Coast Pilot on Wednesday, Aug. 5, stating in recent weeks, doctors, health experts and case investigators have reported seeing cases linked to interstate travel.
“The issue of travel restrictions was raised by members of the Governor’s Medical Advisory Panel based on COVID-19 cases linked to travel in southern Oregon, which is troubling based on the spikes in case counts California is currently experiencing,” Merah said. “Countylevel COVID-19 data from across the country likewise shows increasing case counts between

who she sees regularly. She also sees a lot of friends from high school. Before COVID-19, people were coming in regularly, Lamers said. She had wanted to work in a four-course meal into the schedule. She hopes to start that when things get back to normal. Menu items include sandwiches and soups, much like the food cart. The Chop Salad is exclusive to the South location, and Lamers hopes to expand the menu further by adding French onion soup and French dip sandwiches when customers are able to dine in the restaurant again. She also makes her own relish. “I really can’t wait for it to get back [to normal],” Lamers said. “To have the community here again. I miss that social community gathering.” Lamers has started doing ice cream sandwiches, made
with her homemade cookies, such as snicker doodles. She said she has not done desserts in a while and loves baking cookies and pastries. Lamers has a waffle cone maker and makes homemade waffle cones to serve with Tillamook ice cream. Lamers said she is trying to stay focused on desserts and improving the menu. There are some limitations with a takeout only menu. “I do want to do blueberry cheesecake kind of stuff,” Lamers said. I’m just having hard time finding time to do them with the food cart being so busy.” Lamers works at the food cart in Tillamook three days a week and at the restaurant two days a week. Waits works a similar schedule, covering the restaurant while she covers the food cart. She does not have a lot of time to be in the back to come up with new ideas right now. Both locations
are hiring and are trying to get more employees. Lamers is a trained chef, traditionally trained in fine dining. Her experience in culinary school was traditional French cooking. She hopes to take her experience into the restaurant with the four-course meal. “Those pop-up dinners are really something we’re really wanting to do,” Lamers said. “Once we can get that six feet distance out of here, we’re ready to get that going.” She would like to make house-made pastas and bread. Snyder said the Tillamook Creamery Visitors Center is 100 percent powered by renewable energy. TCCA is always investigating new technologies for more environmentally friendly opportunities. “In our manufacturing environment, we’re looking at renewables and natural gas – natural gas for our trucking fleet,” Snyder said. “We’re constantly investigating new things to do in order to improve, not only with climate, but these things are increasingly making economic sense.” The 2020 Stewardship Report will focus a lot on TCCA’s COVID-19 response, Snyder said. When COVID-19 hit, they announced a $4 million response to support communities. TCCA has helped communities in big and small ways during the pandemic. “What has guided us
have been things that have been there for a long time,” Snyder said. “Our stakeholder mentality, our stakeholders, our values as a cooperative, our heritage in agriculture and in farming.” TCCA has doubled down on those things they are already a part of as they have responded to the crisis. They also have a number of exciting projects they are currently working on in sustainability. “We’ve been looking at our truck fleet and how we could potentially use compressed natural gas to power the truck fleet, rather than typical gasoline,” Snyder said. Snyder said they are looking to see if they can use the manure from cows and put it into the digesters to produce compressed natural gas that will power the truck fleet. TCCA is looking at water stewardship as well, Snyder said. “In Tillamook County, its not about water availability,” Snyder said. “We focus on water stewardship in terms of water that we take in from our plant environments we use, what
then are we returning to the system, and in what condition, and how we can improve that.” TCCA is proud of how it treats its employees. Employees are given fair wages, benefits, and usually 8 hours of volunteer time. This year that volunteer time was extended to 16 hours. Snyder said a number of employees worked on projects this year and others will work on projects as things open with COVID-19. “We’re really proud of the things we have done over the last number of years in regard to diversity inclusion, so that everyone in our culture feels that their voice matters and they can bring their whole self to work,” Snyder said. “With all of the discussions recently, we’re doubling our commitment to that.” Snyder said employees are one of TCCA’s stakeholders. They are the ones making things happen across the entire cooperative.

every student who needs one. Tillamook School District made the announcement Thursday, Aug. 6, to start the school year by utilizing the comprehensive distance learning model for trimester one. In a letter to families, Superintendent Curt Shelley said the comprehensive distance learning would be very different from the virtual program the district implemented in the spring. Students will receive grades at the conclusion of each trimester, they will be required to check in with teachers on a daily basis for social-emotional check ins and academic support, CANVAS will be used, and Acellus will be utilized as the online curriculum for students grades K-12. Training will be offered for families for the use of both CANVAS and Acellus.
Staff will be reporting to buildings daily. Devices can be checked out for all students in need in grades PreK-12. “We know that, even with these adjustments, it will not be in same as having students in our seats in our schools,” Shelley wrote in the letter. “For now, we must err on the side of caution to protect our kids and our staff.” Shelley said the school district hopes to re-evaluate the situation in late November and plan for in-person education. Decisions will be made based on Oregon Department of Education and other state level guidance, as well as the most current COVID-19 data for Tillamook County.

A focus in 2019’s report was sourcing the highest quality, real ingredients; seeking suppliers and contract manufacturers who share TCCA’s values; and advancing TCCA’s commitment to sustainable packaging. The cheeseboards are an example of this sustainability. In 2019, there was a 30 percent reduction in the use of plastic materials in the snack tray and a 20 percent reduction in plastic film. “We found a way to have what was a more pleasing customer package while also having less plastic in it,” Snyder said. This sustainability is embraced across the facilities and is in line with TCCA’s heritage, Snyder said. TCCA is also working on sustainability by reducing the environmental impact of its facilities, participating in the local

Hike your own hike: Getting started on the trails Samantha Goodwin NW Youth Corps GIS Intern US Forest Service t has been a summer unlike any other and many of us are missing out on travel, vacation, and relaxation. Luckily for us, Tillamook County is a wonderland of beautiful trails within an easy drive, giving everyone the chance to breathe the fresh air, walk off stress, and experience something new right here in our own backyard. Worried that you won’t know how to hike the right way? In the hiking community there is a saying; Hike Your Own Hike. It means that there are a million ways to hike and the only “right way” is the right way for you. Power walkers and the “sloth team,” over-packers and minimalists, booted stompers and sneaker-wearing wanderers, all are welcome. Take your time, find the method that works for you, and do what makes you happy. Here are a few guidelines that will help make your first hike a great experience. The Ten Essentials The Ten Essentials are the 10 things you should bring with you on every hike. Yes, every hike, even when it’s only half a mile. All of this should fit in a small backpack and don’t be afraid to dig out that old

school bag. 1. Good Shoes: Happy feet make for happy hikers. Pick shoes that fit well, have good treads for traction in mud, and will protect your feet from rocks, roots, and everything else. Worn in jogging shoes are usually a good choice for beginners. Wear wool or synthetic socks rather than cotton to prevent blisters. 2. Map and GPS: You probably rely on your phone for directions, but it won’t necessarily work in the woods. Download a map to use offline, print out a hard copy map, and maybe even break out that old compass just in case. 3. Water: There’s nothing like a cool gulp of water on a hot day. Bring a 16oz bottle of water for every person for every hour of hiking. Fill up a reusable bottle (usually 32oz) to save space and money. Bring extra water if it’s hot, the trail is steep, or if you’re bringing your thirsty dog. 4. Food: Hikers need snacks! Your body will want more energy during your hike and kids especially need snacks. Choose something healthy like fruit, vegetables, whole grain crackers, nuts, and trail mix. High-protein energy bars can be a good choice. 5. Rain Gear and Extra
Layers: This is the Pacific Northwest, after all. Rain, fog, cold winds, and cool nights are normal. By layering a t-shirt under a sweatshirt you can take off a layer if you get overheated and then put it back on if it cools down. A rain jacket can also be a wind break and bringing a sweatshirt and a warm hat can help you be ready for whatever our wild weather can throw at us. 6. Safety Items: Bring a light, a fire-starting kit, and a whistle. You can buy little “emergency prep” kits in most gas stations. These are just-in-case items, but you’ll be glad to have them if you need them. Kids should each have a whistle and know to blow 3 short blasts if they need to “find Mom and Dad.” 7. First Aid Kit: Blisters, scrapes, or twisted ankles, a good First Aid Kit can take care of the problem. These kits are available in pharmacies in several sizes. Open up the kit and make sure you know what’s inside and how to use it to help. Think about if your family has any specific needs and add things if necessary. 8. Knife or Multi-Tool: A simple pocketknife is a good thing to have and a multi-tool can be useful in many situations. From opening a snack packet to
emergency fire starting, you’ll be glad you have it when you need it. 9. Sun Protection: The sun is a welcome visitor to the Oregon coast, but we all know how harsh it can be. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen will help you enjoy the sun, rather than getting burned. 10. Shelter: Many First Aid Kits will have a space blanket; light, inexpensive, and a great option for an emergency. If your bag is packed with the Ten Essentials, then consider yourself
ready for an easy trial run. Choose a well-known trail that’s close to town, short, and easy for your first hike. Let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back. Test yourself by pretending to be in the wilderness and imagine how you would deal with rain, getting lost, or a minor injury. Finally, make sure to have fun! It’s more important to enjoy yourself than it is to finish the trail, follow a specific plan, or reach your destination. Hike Your Own Hike, and you may find yourself

“Defund the police” I decided to organize the first Back the Blue rally which took place July 11, and had an attendance of well over 100 people. During the first rally we picked up approximately one kitchen garbage bag of trash from the area we were gathered in. The July rally had such an amazing, positive energy that many
people wanted to do it again. With the help of the many volunteers that came to my aid to pull this all together, we immediately got to work planning the next rally. My goal for this rally was to do more than just hold a sign or a flag. I wanted this rally to not only show support for law enforcement, but to also be an opportunity to give
back to the community by hosting a canned food drive. So grab a can of food and drop it off at the Hoquarton Trail parking lot. While you are there feel free to grab a free mini American flag or Thin Blue Line flag and sign the Kate Brown recall as well as the petition to make Tillamook County a second amendment sanctuary.

Pesticides: In response to Jacob Hilger’s letter I have been amazed for years by the perception of the public to the toxic chemicals that are sold as common garden herbicides. What prompted this letter is the letter to the editor that Jacob Hilger, the Coast Reforestation Manager for Stimson Lumber Company,
wrote a few weeks ago. His nonchalant attitude about the use of pesticides and herbicides again appalled me. Roundup is probably the main herbicide that the county uses to spray the sides of our roads. The smell is unmistakable. There was a case just ended against Monsanto that claims that Round-up has caused cancer to a number of individuals. The class action suit was just settled for $10 billion dollars. It is for this purpose that many people put “no spray” signs in front of their property. When we first moved onto our property, the person that took care of the roads in our community would spray Round-up from the back of his pickup with no mask. I quickly informed him of the health hazards of doing this, both to himself and his the driver besides having the spray drift over our property.
Now for the spraying of our forests that Jacob also believes is harmless since spraying is so pervasive in our community. I was able to get the list of chemicals used from the FERNS website. FERNS is the agency used by the timber companies to keep track of when and where logging happens, and when spray will be applied and what the chemicals are. These chemicals are used to kill all living plants and animals so that the trees they plant will no competition while they grow. (There are other more sustainable ways to farm a new crop of trees as used in other places in the US.) A part of the M.O.U. that was reached between the forest industry and local community/state environmental non-profits was voted on in our last Oregon State special session. It states that the timber industry must warn local citizens when they will be spray-

library opens back up. That is false, too. We want nothing more than to gain new patrons so we are being super-flexible about getting you set up with your very own card. Just give one of our libraries a call and we will be happy to work oneon-one with you to make you the newest member of the Tillamook County Library. Myth #3 – The library is not even trying to open back up to the public. Again, no truth to this one. In addition to offering Curbside Pickup five days per week at all library locations, we are also adapting the insides of our libraries to be ready for visits from the public. We have plexiglass sneeze guards installed, hand sanitizing stations, plastic sleeves for computer keyboards, social distancing floor markers, new sanitation procedures in place…and so much more. We would love to open tomorrow if we could, but our first priority is to keep the public and staff safe. Management is putting together a plan and we will implement it as soon as we possibly can. Myth #4 – The library has cancelled Summer Reading Program this
year. Super-false on that one! In fact, we’ve extended the deadline so you have most of August to complete the program. Since we could not invite you into the library to pickup prizes periodically through the summer like we would normally do, kids can expect a big payoff at the end with a fun package of prizes for participants to take home. You can find the link on our tillabook.org website…or just call the library for assistance. Myth #5 – I can’t even return my library books so I am going to have incredible overdue fines! Good news here too because last week, we opened all the book drops at all locations, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week! And about those fines…we are currently waiving those. We figured this would be one less thing to worry about during these troubling times. There you have it! The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Library staff are all keeping quite busy right now, helping patrons on the phone and at curbside…plus preparing for that glorious day when we can swing our doors wide open and welcome you in.

An open letter to the Tillamook County Commissioners D
ear Commissioners, My wife Becky Rae and I are native Oregonians. I was born and raised in Tillamook and we have visited all of Tillamook county beach areas with our families over the last 70 years. We have owned our home in Pacific City near Cape Kiwanda for almost 30 years and spend much of our time there with our children and grandchildren and friends. Pacific City has “grown up” over the last number of years and feel that most of its growth has been responsible development. The economy of Pacific City has grown with it as well. However, the last couple of years have seen an enormous amount of increased tourism that has impacted traffic to the extent of being dangerous for pedestrians walking to the beach from parking their cars and RV’s along roadways leading into and out of PC. This has been exacerbated with
the recent closures of beach parking, which historically alleviated much of the parking problems and pedestrians walking on the roadway issues. People are parking door to door anywhere they can. (see attached photos) Getting out of their cars within 6’ of each other and walking closely to others on the roadways while traffic attempts to avoid hitting them. Probably not something we should be doing with C19 issues. Once on the beach however, people seem to keep their proper distance from those other than their families. It seems to us that allowing people to park on the beach could alleviate a lot of these parking problems and decrease foot traffic to the beach as well. We said it was only a matter of time and just last week-end, a pedestrian was seriously injured while trying to walk past cars parked on both sides of McPhillips
Drive coming into Cape Kiwanda from the north. In addition, some county agency or entity decided that piling dirt mounds on the westside of McPhillips Drive just prior to the Cape Kiwanda parking lot was a good idea. (see photo) It isn’t a good idea. This forces people to walk on the roadway between cars parked everywhere while traffic attempts to get by without hitting anyone. That didn’t work out on July 26 and could happen again easily. The “No Parking” signs that were installed hasn’t worked either. They are totally ignored. We would like the county to re-consider permitted parking on the beaches. Many state, county and federal park areas require a parking permit that is purchased either by the day, week or annually. If such a permit were required, it could designate the parking areas, driving/parking/ camping rules and also
decrease dangerous beach driving, litter and fireworks. These safety and litter issues could all be addressed and disclosed in the permit. I’m sure there are com-
plexities involved in this proposal, however we think it is certainly worth considering for the betterment and safety of future tourist and residents alike.

This year’s fall “Hogs ’r Runnin’” fishing derby, hosted by Pete and Erik Steen, has been postponed. This would have been the 30th year of the family-andfriends competition that raises money for salmon conservation in Tillamook Bay. The father-and-son duo aim to have the tournament up and running again in Oct. 2021. In the meantime, three-time Big Hog winner Karen Walz is keeping her fishing skills sharp. She has caught two fall Chinook over 20 pounds up in Nehalem Bay this month. Congratulations to Karen and her fish-
ing “guide,” husband Steve. Karen’s tip for the rest of us? Maintain a positive attitude even when the weeds are bad and the fish aren’t biting. We’ve had another family visit: one adult child and her family to lunch on the deck with Grandma and Grandpa. We fixed a meal of individual servings (salmon burgers, veggie cups, slices of watermelon, small containers of applesauce, and string cheese) and sat more than six feet across from each other. After lunch, we walked on the beach, then came back to the deck for ice cream
and cookies before they left. We all wore masks when not eating or drinking. We have five children; three visits down, two to go. They are allowed inside to use a bathroom, you’ll be glad to know; it’s set up with paper towels, soap, hand sanitizer, and Clorox wipes. I wait for several days after they’ve visited before thoroughly cleaning that bathroom. This has been a successful arrangement, giving us an opportunity to see family in the safest (outdoor) environment. What will we do once the fall rains start? That remains to be seen!

The structure, an attractive wooden arch with pillars supporting crossbeams and an open lattice, forms an entry to her garden. Sally has been watching YouTube videos to learn how to graft flowers onto the pergola; she hopes it will someday be covered with New Dawn roses. Our son and his wife sold their home in Portland for 5 percent over the asking price in just 36 hours. Right here in Cape Meares, the Nelsons on 4th St. NW sold their house a week after they put it on the market in June (it had been on the market about a year ago, then taken off for several months). Scott and Lisa are looking to buy a house in Wenatchee, Washington, close to their grandchildren.

what we’ve got in the good ol’ USA.” The Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Jerry Nadler, put it bluntly on the Senate floor during Trump’s impeachment trial: “He is a dictator.” These fears stem from legitimate concerns about the 45th president. And Trump deserves much of the criticism he receives. But the narrative is confused. Trump is no dictator. For starters, the checks and balances in our constitutional system won’t let it happen. Indeed, federal and state governments have consistently stymied Trump’s ability to achieve his goals. A Democrat-led Congress has thwarted his legislative agenda and impeached him. The courts have repeatedly ruled against him -- and he has not once contested the legitimacy of those decisions. His own executive branch has investigated him for years and sent several of his associates to jail. It’s no different at the state level. Governors fight him tooth and nail. Attorneys general sue him left and right. Even mayors contest his orders regularly. Trump is, moreover, loudly criticized by the press around the clock. And

They run “The Wave” bus service and Dial-a-Ride Countywide. Many of the proposed improvements his former allies and family members blast him in bestselling books. These things don’t happen to dictators -- who, by definition, significantly control their own government, press and people. True, the rest of the government and the press cannot make Trump more competent. Nor can they force him to stop tweeting absurdities. And Trump, like all presidents, has wide latitude to act in foreign affairs. (Gulp.) These are all important, and concerning, limitations on the ability to restrain Trump. But that does not make him an all-powerful dictator. Just last term the Supreme Court -- in a resounding rejection of any such notion -- held that a state prosecutor may seek Trump’s personal financial information. Is there anything less dictatorial than a president being subject to criminal process by the local prosecutor? The second reason why the narrative that Trump is becoming a dictator is confused is because he doesn’t have the talent, skill or work ethic to seize dictatorial control over the other power centers in government. Being a dictator is hard. Even if you inherit it from your father (like Kim Jong-on) or seize it from the ashes of a disintegrated empire (like Validimir Putin), maintaining dictator-

reetings Bay City! Its hard to believe that Kin and I have been home since March due to Covid-19. Its been challenging, not only for Kin and I, our family and friends, but for the community as a whole. Friends have shared that they are feeling the strain of loss and uncertainty. They are asking “When will this end?” A dear friend said that, when bad things are happening in her life, she tries to find things to be grateful for. I am grateful that I live in a community where the leaders stepped forward to help the businesses; and volunteers helped the community by making masks and creating ways to help us stay connected via Zoom, Facebook, etc. I am also grateful for my neighbors who rallied to help one another. Kindness and generosity are alive and well in Bay City. Opportunities to serve and connect to our community:
The Oyster Club will be holding an outdoor “Meet and Greet” barbecue in late September or early October. The dinner meeting is being held to review the plans for the 2021 Pearl and Oyster Music Festival, October city-wide garage sale, and harvest event. News from the Bay City Arts Center: The Arts Center’s Artful Pancake Breakfast scheduled for Sunday, August 16th has been canceled until further notice due to Covid-19. The Tillamook Revitalization Association (TRA) presented a slide show of TRA-sponsored events and accomplishments to the Tillamook City Council. you next week. Recipe for egg white and avocado breakfast sandwich. Prep time 5 mins. Cook time 5 mins. Total time 10 mins. Ingredients: 2 slices whole grain bread; 2 egg whites; ½ avocado mashed; ¼ cup shredded pepper jack cheese (any cheese is fine); salt and pepper to taste. Instructions: 1. While the bread is toasting, cook the egg whites over medlow heat in a small skillet (like you would a fried egg). Cover with a lid to help the egg whites cook evenly. The egg whites should be cooked in about 2-3 minutes, depending upon your stove. Once cooked, pull off the heat and set aside. 2. Spread the mashed avocado on both slices of bread. Top one slice of the bread with the egg whites and the other slice with the pepper jack cheese. 3. Season with salt and pepper to your taste, close the sandwich, and enjoy.

Solid Waste Supervisor and Mayor of Bay City, David McCall, informed me that all Tillamook County transfer stations (Manzanita, Tillamook, and Pacific City) are part of the Oregon E-Cycle program and accept program e-waste free of charge during normal working hours. We don’t know when things will return to normal. But until then we need to find ways to cope; or as my husband says, “Keep our sanity” (laugh out loud). Obituaries Arthur Charles Killian Sept. 13, 1933 - Aug. 2, 2020
A
rthur Killian passed away peacefully in Yuma, Arizona on August 2, 2020 where he and his loving wife, Eva, have lived for the last 24 years. Art was born on September 13, 1933 in Pringle, South Dakota, where he was the second oldest of four children. His family moved to Tillamook, Oregon when Art was young. Art attended school in Tillamook until he joined the Navy in 1952, where he served our country in the Korean War and was discharged in 1960. Art married Dolores Blazer in Tillamook. Art and Dolores and her identical twin sister, Donna and her fiance Everrett, were married in a double wedding on May 21,1960. Art and Dolores had three children, Daniel Wayne, Arthur Charles, Jr., and Debra Lynn. Later Art married Bonnie Crum in Tillamook, they had one child, Loralee Ann. Art and Bonnie and the children moved to a remote logging camp, Whale Pass, in southeast Alaska in 1970 where Art worked as a

mechanic for Gildersleeve Logging. The family enjoyed the outdoor activities and subsistence way of life while living in Whale Pass. In April of 1978, Art married Eva Moline in Tenakee Springs, Alaska. Art and Eva lived in rural logging camps in southeast Alaska until they moved to Yuma, Arizona in 1996. Before permanently relocating to Yuma, they enjoyed years as Snowbirds. When in Yuma they worked for Hank Schechert, as Hank developed the community in the Yuma Foothills. Art was always busy and loved working outside while fixing things around the house! He was masterful at building with wood and his home in Yuma has many pieces he built. He had a great sense of humor and liked to visit with people. When in Alaska, he loved being on his boats and fishing with his family. Art is survived by his brother, Kenny of Tillamook, Oregon, children Daniel (Amy) of Thorne Bay, Alaska, Chuck (Vicky) of Wasilla, Alaska, Debra of Wasilla, Alaska, and Lori of Ogdon, Utah; grandchildren Lucas, Trevor (Kris), Dustin, Icy, Jesse (Megan), Leanna (Carl and Matt), Courtney, and Shaun; and great grandchildren Jesse, Autumn, Millie, Cutter, Jacob, Ariel and Kendal. He is preceded in death by his parents, Cy and Marion Killian, and siblings, Betty Lou and Mic. Services will be scheduled at a later date.

iving until the remarkable age of 103, Carol Calder Povey literally lit up the room when she walked in. As someone who broke glass ceilings, traveled the world, relished in her family and found adventure in the everyday, Carol loved taking an art class, hiking and skiing in the mountains, being the den mother to many Boy Scouts, contributing to her community, blowing endless amounts of bubbles and taking in the sunset on her deck overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Born the youngest of 5 children to Hilda Peterson Calder and David O. Calder, Carol spent her life getting after what she wanted (and sometimes what others told her she couldn’t have). Carol was revered for her fashion sense, artistic abilities and irreverent humor. From her college years at the University of Washington to one of the first women in the world of advertising in the 1940’s, Carol was a pioneer at heart, always looking for adventure and never backing down from a challenge. Known for her fun-loving and adventurous spirit, Carol married her sweetheart Edward Povey (July 6, 1914July 23, 1976.) August 10, 1938 in Hawaii, both taking a 10-day boat trip from BC to get to the alter! She loved her morning coffee, her husband, her children David Calder Povey Sept. 7, 1939 and Susan Povey (August 31, 1948 May 4, 2017) and each of her 6 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and 4 greatgreat grandchildren. A lifelong Oregonian, Carol was a resident of Oregon for her 103 years. She lived all over the state from Pendleton to Redmond, SW Portland, Sauvie Island with every move getting closer to the ocean, which she loved. Carol lived independently in her beach house in Neahkahnie for the last 35 years, where she watched the sunset every evening while sipping a tipple of rum. While Ed was still alive, they always watched together, making 25¢ bets with their grand kids whether the sun would set in the ocean or the clouds. Carol went to work for Meier & Frank in 1943 and went on to work for Berg’s and then The Broadway until her retirement. A tireless community advocate, Carol was actively involved in government and her local community. Always a cham-

ebbie was born in Newark, CA to her parents, Patricia and Charles McPherson. She was raised in Santa Rosa, CA and graduated from Montgomery High School in 1979. She worked for Hewlett Packard in both Santa Rosa and Oregon for 25 years. In the mid 80’s, she moved with her family to Oregon on a little
farm in Willamina, Oregon. She was a beautiful, caring, strong, hardworking woman, wife, mother, daughter and sister. She absolutely loved baseball and was a San Francisco Giants fan for life. Debbie was wicked smart with numbers, remembering birthdays, special occasions and became the keeper of family history. She enjoyed knitting, reading, and playing games with friends and family. She spent the past 7 years in Nehalem helping to take care of her motherin-law until the time of her passing. Debbie’s death was unexpected, and she is survived by her husband, Wallace Wefer, daughter, Stevie Marie, brother Chuck McPherson (Dolores) , nephew Landon and niece Brittany.

enevieve Shotwell passed away July 27, 2020 at her home in Bay Center, Wa. She was born at home in the Wilson River Tollhouse April 20, 1925, the youngest of three daughters, to Sylvester and Pearl Hughey Siskey. Genevieve married J. Arnold Shotwell December 11,1948 and graduated from the University of Oregon in 1949. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, sisters Marietta Butler and June Moyer, and daughter Nancy Palmer. She is survived by her children Patricia VanOsdol (Jim), Steven (Andrea), and Sue Shotwell; grandchildren Jennifer Geisler (Chris), David Hazen (Sherry), Carolyn Love, Raymond and Thomas Shotwell, step grandchild Cassandra VanOsdol; great grandchildren Alisha and Mitchell Geisler, Julian and Benja Rabemiafura, step great grandchildren Jacob, Mathew, and Aiden Craton, and nephew Clifford Moyer. No services will be held at her request. The ashes of Genevieve and Arnold will be spread together on her beloved farm at Siskeyville, Wilson River, Tillamook,
Oregon. No funeral arrangements are scheduled at this time.

Last week was a battle on the golf course for Alderbrook Mens Club matches. The two first place teams got overtaken by the second place teams as the matches are getting more and more important to those teams looking to make the playoffs. Each hole has covered points teams need to garner to etch themselves up in the standings. Clatsop Beaches, between the Columbia River and Tillamook Head, for the ODFW annual razor clam conservation closure. This conservation closure is in effect from July 15 through Sept. 30 of each year to protect newly set young clams. This closure is not because of biotoxins. The earliest razor clamming on the Clatsop Beaches could open is Oct. 1. The conservation closure is for the Clatsop Beaches only. It does not include beaches south of Tillamook Head. Recreational mussel, bay clam and crab harvesting
is open along the entire Oregon Coast. Coastal scallops are not affected by biotoxin closures when only the adductor muscle is eaten. The consumption of whole recreational scallops is not recommended. Commercial shellfish products remain safe for consumers. Paralytic shellfish toxin and domoic acid are produced by algae and originate in the ocean. ODA will continue to test for shellfish toxins twice per month, as tides and weather permit. Reopening an area closed for biotoxins requires two consecutive tests with results below the limit.

I was born on 2/20/2019. I went in foster care on 3/26/2019 and have been with our foster family for a year and a half. Now don’t get me wrong, I am very loved, but it is time for me to find my furrever home.
So, let me introduce myself and tell you a little bit about myself. My name is Casey, a domestic short hair black and white female, I have been spayed and have had all my vaccines as well as booster shots. I am independent in terms of cuddling and pets. I’ll tell you when I want some, it’s usually after everyone else has gone to sleep. I am somewhat dependent on my person, for instance, I don’t like it when she goes outside with the dogs and leaves me inside, she can’t shower or go to the bathroom without me! I would consider myself an emotional support cat. My keen sense tells me when you’re not feeling well or need some extra hugs. I love to travel and do okay with my harness training, so if you adopt me, I’d be happy to go anywhere with you! I do need a little more work on the harness and leash, however, I do like hanging out in a pocket on a t-shirt or even one of those cat backpacks so I can enjoy the fresh air. I love dogs, in fact, I sort of have my own personal dog here in my foster home. I’m not positive on small kids, their over excitement scares me, but maybe older children. I’d do well somewhere that has other animals. Adoption fees range from $75-100.
