Vaccine online scheduling tool coming, five new positive cases Hilary Dorsey Staff Writer Tillamook County Health Department reported during a community update Friday, March 19, five new confirmed positive and five presumptive cases this week. The health department is monitoring 23 cases. “We’re seeing an increase in the number of people being tested,” Administrator Marlene Putman said. Putman said Warning Week data shows Tillamook County may remain in Moderate Risk, although

there is potential of the county moving to High Risk, effective Friday, March 26. “If we have over 45 cases between March 7 and March 20, then we’d move to the High Risk category, effective the end of March, the 26th,” Putman said. “We’re still at Moderate Risk, we hope to stay at Moderate Risk.” With spring break approaching, Putman added that people should remember to wear a face covering and stay 6 feet apart in public. People should stay home if ill, unless seek-

ing medical attention. Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Ed Colson said this week, 737 primary doses have been administered in Tillamook County. He added that 2,424 Phase 1A booster doses have been administered in the county since December. To date, a total of 5,850 first dose vaccines have been administered. ehalem local Shawn Brigl wrote two children’s books in the past few months: “Let’s Go See What Comes from the Sea!” and “Little Red Chair & Big Blue Boat’s Day on the Bay!” Both books are available for purchase on Amazon. Both of Brigl’s books are themed around the beach. “Let’s Go See What Comes from the Sea!” came out Oct. 14, 2020 and “Little Red Chair & Big Blue Boat’s Day on the Bay!” came out Nov. 21, 2020. Brigl said her family is on the water a lot on a boat. While crabbing one day, on their blue boat, Brigl sat in a red chair her husband said “Hey Little Red Chair.” He replied, “Hey blue boat.” This inspired her to write “Little Red Chair & Big Blue Boat’s Day on the Bay!” Her book “Let’s Go See What Comes for the Sea was inspired by seeing kids looking for treasure on the beach. “These two books – both of these books – came to me right away,” Brigl Children’s book said. “Because of the experience living author Shawn Brihere, it just comes to you.” gl (Inset) Covers Brigl wrote her two books and found of two books and an illustrator and editor. The book is called “Little Dottie’s First Day on the Farm,” inspired by Brigl’s new puppy, Dottie, who is white with one brown ear. Dottie lives on Brigl’s farm, which includes 65 chickens. There are also horses and cows. The book is about the dog’s first day on the farm surrounded by farm animals. “When they come to you, they come to you,” Brigl said of writing her stories. “You just got to write it down.” When Brigl’s kids were in school, she started helping out in kindergarten and preschools. She got certified and had her own small group in grades K-5.

Most of the kids she had were troubled with a difficult home environment. She loved helping these students. “They could start out reading maybe nine words a minute, and then when we got done by the end of the quarter or the semester, they were reading 120 words a minute, like above and beyond they should,” Brigl said. “Of course, that was supported by gummies, stickers and ‘good jobs.’” Brigl said she loved how the students has no clue about reading and then saw how reading offered a whole new world to them. Brigl has lived on the North Oregon Coast for the last six years. She owns local business High Tide Home Cleaning & Yard Maintenance. “Having my own business gave me more time for myself,” Brigl said. “I just thought I would write these books” Brigl’s books have gotten rave reviews. Friends and family have told her it is nice to take the book along when they take their kids to the coast. The books can be purchased online on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Abebooks and more. It is also available at Wisteria Chic in Manzanita. Brigl said it is important to find a good illustrator and editor. Seeing the books come to life is fun, she added.

COVID-19 vaccine update: 22 percent of county vaccinated T

illamook County Health Department provided a COVID-19 vaccine update during a Tillamook County Board of Commissioners meeting Wednesday, March 17. Administrator Marlene Putman said there has been an increase in positive COVID-19 cases over the past couple of weeks, with the majority of them being family connected. There were 11 positive cases over the March 13-14 weekend. “OHA calculated our 40 new confirmed and presumptive cases from the time period of Feb. 28 through March 13,” Putman said. If cases rise above 45 in the two-week period, the county will move to High Risk, effective Friday, March 26, Putman added. If cases are greater than 60, the county would move to Extreme Risk. Final data count and risk level status will be announced Tuesday, March 23. “No-cost COVID-19 testing is available,” Putman. “You can call for an appointment at our clinic at [503] 842-3900.” As of Friday, March 19, 22 percent of Tillamook County residents have been vaccinated. The health department and vaccine partners are working on Phase 1B, people 65 and older. “If you’re eligible, sign up online and people will call you back,” Putman said. Putman said the county receives 700 doses from the state each week. The health department and vaccine partners will make every effort to reach out to everyone who wants to receive a vaccine. “For the next eligible groups of people, and that’s a long list, it includes a long list of people, and that’s effective on March 29,” Putman said. “We’re talking adults 45-64, migrant and seasonal farmers, food processing centers, seafood and agricultural, among other things, including people living in low-income housing.” Rescheduling people for the vaccine imposes a challenge, so people should commit to the earliest available vaccine appointment. “Arrive at your scheduled appointment time,” Putman said. “Wait in your car, if you have questions, you can talk to a greeter. If you don’t have a vehicle, we’ll make arrangements for seating.” Putman said she believes the pharmacies at Safeway and Tillamook Pharmacy are receiving 100 doses per week. These pharmacies are administering doses separately. Anyone who is currently eligible for vaccines can sign up for appointments. Facebook granted extension for cable project in Tierra Del Mar Hilary Dorsey Staff Writer

Oregon Parks and Recreation Department advised the community of Tierra Del Mar that Facebook has been granted an additional year for its cable installation project in Tierra Del Mar. Facebook had requested the extension and it was granted March 10. In a message forwarded to OPRD, Oregon Coast Alliance (ORCA) stated it was “astonished that OPRD decided to grant an extension for a year on the Edge Cable permit.” Early in April 2020, Edge Cable Holdings, Inc., a subcontractor for Face-

book, notified the Oregon Department of State Lands of drilling equipment that was left behind after the drill pipe snapped. About 1,100 feet of drill pipe, a drill tip and 6,500 gallons of drilling fluid were left in the ocean. Facebook has drilled to the undersea punch-out point about a half mile from the lot and has completed the horizontal directional drilling work as of Monday, March 15, on the Jupiter subsea cable landing in Tierra Del Mar. The temporary steel casing has been fully removed from the borehole. Construction is now paused for spring break. “While the drilling portion of the project appears

to be complete, the telecommunications cable has not yet been installed under the ocean shore,” said Chris Havel, associate director of OPRD, in an email to the Tierra Del Mar community. “Extending the expiration date of the permit ensures its conditions continue to protect the ocean shore until the portion of the project under the beach is complete.” Remaining construction work will continue April 6, which includes manhole and conduit construction. Facebook plans to remove all remaining construction equipment by April 30 and will then begin site restoration efforts on the lot. “Our restoration land-

scaping plan includes native plants that are wind-tolerant, erosion-controlling, and that can establish quickly with low input and maintenance of existing natural vegetation,” Facebook stated in a letter provided to the Headlight Herald. “The proposed plant list was reviewed by naturalists from both Oregon State Parks and the Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex, and the restoration by a local landscaping firm will be done in accordance with their recommendations.” Send comments to: headlightreporter@countrymedia.net

Under Biden mandate, state speeds vaccine timeline Zack Demars Country Media

In a quick about-face from just a week earlier, Oregon health officials announced Friday they would be meeting President Joe Biden’s May 1 deadline to open COVID-19 vaccine eligibility to all adults. “My team is in touch with the White House for more specifics about when vaccine shipments to states will increase,” said Governor Kate Brown in a press conference. “We have always attempted to align our vaccination timelines with available federal supplies. And so far, it’s been really encouraging to see so many Oregonians eager to get the vaccine when it’s their turn.” The news came informally earlier in the week, when Oregon Health Authority Director Patrick Allen told Oregon Public Broadcasting the agency had determined the president’s timeline was an order, not just an optimistic suggestion. Just a week prior, Allen and other state officials were hesitant to embrace the president’s timeline, concerned about whether or not vaccine

supply would be available to meet it. “The answer is yes, if the federal government comes through at the levels of vaccines we’ve projected based on the national numbers the administration has released,” Allen said. “We know it will take a couple of weeks to get through the surge. But we can keep pace.” The quicker pace — the state had originally been on track to open eligibility to all adults July 1 — means the rest of the state’s vaccination timeline is also moving up. But Allen said Friday the new timeline will result in some “traffic jams” when large classes of people become eligible for the vaccine. “However, I want to be crystal clear. Not every Oregonian will have a vaccination appointment waiting for them,” the director said. “It’ll take a few weeks for supply to catch up to demand.” Still, health officials laid out a new timeline for making Oregonians eligible to get in line for the vaccine. Starting March 22, vaccinations will open slightly: Counties that attest to largely completing the vaccination of residents 65 and older may begin vaccinating the next eligible groups. Vaccinations may also begin for migrant and seasonal farmworkers in counties where they are currently already working. Starting March 29, the following groups will be eligible: All adults 45-64 with underlying health conditions, Migrant and seasonal farm workers, Seafood and agricultural workers, Food processing workers, People living in lowincome senior housing, senior

congregate and independent living, Individuals experiencing homelessness, People currently displaced by wildfires, Wildland firefighters and Pregnant people 16 and older.

Starting April 19, the state will open eligibility to: Frontline workers as defined by the CDC, Multigenerational household members and Adults 16-44 with underlying health conditions. And on May 1, the state will open vaccine eligibility to anyone 16 and older, according to OHA. According to Allen, OHA isn’t setting explicit benchmarks for which counties can move forward in vaccine eligibility at the March 22 phase, saying instead the agency will rely on each county to make that attestation to the state. Several counties have already done so, he said. “So we think that county commissioners, in consultation with their public health departments, are in the best position to assess things like,

are appointments filling up quickly or not, or have they reached hard-to-reach populations. So we’ll simply take that attestation,” Allen said. Some counties are already well ahead of others in vaccinating seniors. Allen pointed to Deschutes County in Central Oregon where 7 in ten seniors have already been vaccinated, compared to just under 60% statewide. “We don’t want appointment slots left unfilled next week,” Allen said. The state’s new timelines are predicated on big promises from the federal government. By early April, the state will need to receive around 250,000 first doses of the vaccine each week in order to make every adult eligible by May 1, Allen said. What’s more, the state will need to ramp up the speed at which it gets shots in arms: Currently, the state does around 25,000 shots a day, and Allen said it’ll likely need to double that to hit the new benchmarks Still, health officials Friday were optimistic about the high-speed vaccination effort, saying the state should have enough vaccine supply to give all adults in Oregon at least one shot by the end of May. It’s a much different picture than just weeks ago, when the same health officials predicted that benchmark might not occur until late summer or early fall. “Now it’s possible every adult in Oregon could be vaccinated within ten weeks,” Allen said Friday. “That’s an extraordinary turn around, but every Oregonian needs to continue to do his or her part and get vaccinated. We can starve the virus of new people to infect.”

Easter egg hunt slated

Living Water Fellowship is hosting an Easter egg hunt at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, the day before Easter. The

event will take place at Hadley Ballpark, located next to Papa Murphy’s at 955 N Main St in Tillamook. Pastor Justin McMahan said the hunt itself is for kids, although there is still fun to be had for adults. There will be a raffle with prizes for both kids and adults. A helicopter will be dropping eggs on the field during the event. There will be free hot

cocoa and coffee, McMahan added. Prizes include gift cards to local places in Tillamook, a bike and an Easter basket. “We will be following COVID-19 restrictions,” McMahan said. The Easter egg hunt will be starting at 11 a.m. sharp with a countdown for kids to run out to the field to hunt for the eggs.

Lead pastors at Living Water Fellowship engage in community Hilary Dorsey Staff Writer Husband and wife Justin and Erin McMahan became lead pastors at Living Water Fellowship in July 2020 and since have been actively involved in the community. The couple moved to the area from Kalispell, Mont., where they served at a church as executive pastors. Justin is originally from the Portland area. He was a district manager for a clothing company and ran a district that included Oregon, part of Washington and Alaska. He decided it was time to make a change and the couple moved to Montana, where they became pastors at a local church for five years. “My wife and I have always loved the Oregon coast,” Justin said. “ In fact, our honeymoon was spent in Rockaway when we got married 25 years ago this June.” When Justin heard a pastor was retiring in Tillamook, he was interested and got to know the leaders of the church. He and Erin started serving at the church in July 2020. “When we first got here, the church was very welcoming but we could hardly meet together,” Justin said. “We were doing small meetings but there’s all the restrictions and things like that.” Justin said during the fires in Bay City in early September, he was surprised to see, coming from a larger city, everyone wanting to help the firefighters and community. “You don’t often see a community that unifies to help each other,” Justin said. “Even when we were living in Montana – it was a smaller city but not this small – and it wasn’t like that out there either. That was kind

Husband and wife Justin and Erin McMahan are the lead pastors at Living Water Fellowship. of the first big thing that really stuck out to me.” Living Water Fellowship has been active in the community, being a part of the tree lighting ceremony downtown for Christmas, letting students study and have access to Wi-Fi in the church during the first trimester of this school year, and donating 300 backpacks for the backpack program. “Once the school year started, we were able to jump in,” Justin said. “As a church, and as individuals here, one of our biggest passions is being able to be a church that serves people spiritually but also serves people practically.” Justin said the upcoming Easter egg hunt – held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, at Hadley Park next to Papa Murphy’s in Tillamook – was born out of the idea of doing something for the community within the COVID-19 restrictions. “We have about 6,000 eggs we’re giving out,” Jus-

tin said. “We have a helicopter that is going to come and drop the eggs on the field; some of the eggs, not all of them.” People in the church are donating money for raffle prizes. Dutch Bros. is donating coffee and hot cocoa for the day. Living Water Fellowship will hold two Easter services at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday, April 4. There are hand sanitizer stations at both entrances of the church, Justin said. A lot of what the church does has been shifted online during the pandemic. t their March 11 meeting, the Tillamook County Planning Commission voted six to zero to deny an appeal regarding development of Bayocean Spit by Dale Bernards, Bay Ocean LLC. This denial leaves private property on the spit restricted to “low-impact recreational” usage only. One among many who will be cheering this outcome is Pat Patterson, an almostcentenarian who was the last keeper at Cape Meares Lighthouse. Mr. Patterson called me a couple of weeks ago after reading about the above appeal. He reminisced about moving one of the last big houses from the town of Bayocean off the spit before it could fall into the sea. He thought that was in 1943. Mr. Patterson is adamantly opposed to any development of the peninsula—and he has a lot of company here in Cape Meares!

The usual spring rains brought a short round of woes for the entrance to and egress from our little community the other day. A downed tree and a small landslide impeded two spots on Bayocean Road. The Tillamook PUD soon got the road open again. In fact, they spent all that day clearing the road and taking down hazard trees. Thank you, PUD! Several years ago there were hard working cadets volunteering with the Rockaway Beach Fire Department. Daniel and his sister, Korina Simmons worked extra hard through the flooding in Rockaway Beach a few years ago. They stayed busy filling sandbags and helping wherever they could. Well,

the forest, and the other night they were awakened at 3 a.m. by the sounds of a cougar killing an elk about 50 feet from their home. Scott urges everyone to take precautions while hiking and with small children or pets who may be playing outside. If you encounter a cougar, experts advise you to: 1) remain calm and do not run; 2) pick up small children immediately; 3) stand up and spread your arms to make yourself look bigger; 4) maintain eye contact while backing away slowly; 5) if the cougar approaches, wave your arms, shout and throw sticks or rocks; and, 6) if attacked, fight back aggressively. Good news for rockhounds: The big rock bed at the south end of Cape Meares beach has been revealed again. I found some agates and green jasper, so-called “Oregon jade.” Both types of rock polish up nicely. If you are interested in tumbling

rocks, check out rockshed. com; it’s where I buy supplies. And if you are headed out for a beach walk, take along a bag to fill with litter on the way home. Don’t fill it with trash on the way out; that time is reserved for treasure hunting. Every litter bit helps! It’s whale-watching time along the Oregon coast. The season starts in late March and goes through June. Some 25,000 gray whales leave Baja, Mexico, this time of year and head north to cooler Alaskan waters. The official Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s Whale Watch Week program has been cancelled due to the pandemic, but the whales don’t know that! They are still migrating off our shoreline. Keep an eye peeled for spouts, and perhaps calves accompanying their mamas as well, as you gaze at the ocean. Happy spring!

Thanks to Gordon McCraw, Tillamook County’s Emergency Services Coordinator, for word of educational videos regarding the Covid-19 vaccine. The locally produced videos are accessible on the Tillamook Community Health Center’s webpage at www.tillamookchc.org/covidupdates/. He describes them as that “worth watching,” and they may be useful to those who are undecided whether to have the vaccine or not. One is in English and one is in Spanish. Remember that spring whale migration kicks off in late March and will last into June, but that the whale watching experience will look different this year due to the pandemic. Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) canceled its 2021 spring Whale Watch Week program, traditionally held during spring break, meaning volunteers won’t be stationed

at whale watching sites. In addition, the Whale Watch Center in Depoe Bay is closed. Visitors may still enjoy this spring tradition on their own, while following statewide COVID-19 guidelines for safe travel and physical distancing. Most viewing sites managed by OPRD are open, with reduced services in some locations due to limited resources. A map of whale watching sites is available online. will make an appearance at both Simply Charming and The Little White Church Saturday, April 3rd. We are still firming up the time, but the bunny should be at Simply Charming at 10:30 am. Just respect the distancing…. Personally, I can’t wait. Hopefully by next year there can be lots of hugs! Rockaway Beach Merchants are having an Easter drive-by at the Wayside. There will be a tent in the center of the wayside, where bunny helpers will be handing out Easter baskets to the kiddos. There will be 55 baskets, so get there early. This event begins at noon. There are Easter celebrations all over the county so be sure to look for them for your children. Of course, our events are the bestest! The most important events of the Easter Season happen at St. Mary’s by the Sea. That is the true reason for the Season. On Holy Thursday, April 1st, there will be an Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7pm and Adoration until 10pm. Good Friday, April 2nd,there is a service at 3pm. Easter Vigil Service is Saturday, April 3rd at 8pm and Easter Sunday masses are at 8:30 and 10:30. More info next week. The Rockaway Community Church also has a celebration for Easter. They are having a Good Friday service on April 2nd at 6pm and their Easter Sunday service is at 10:30am on April 4th. Linda Bagwell has another tidbits to share. She knows that many of the empty crab shellbacks are due to the crabs molting, but she has also heard discussions about them dying off. Molting is the process of replacing the exoskeleton. It is a complex process that has four stages; inter-molt, pre-molt, ecdysis (What the heck? It just means shedding), and post-molt. It is an extremely dangerous process for the crab and it takes several hours and requires lots of energy. Okay, after that I think I will skedaddle. “Spring is a whimsical wanderer, blooming beauty along her path.” That’s Rockaway Beach, “Sugar Coated!”

First vaccine piece of cake

I received my first vaccine shot yesterday. I have to applaud the Tillamook County Community Health Center for their outstanding organization of the vaccine distribution. I filled out their form on line and submitted it. Some weeks later I received a phone call and was given an appointment. I. Went yesterday to the fairgrounds. There was a small building marked CLINIC near the fairgrounds fence along third street. I filled out one more form and waited about five minutes. Two women were calling people (only a dozen there altogether) from their list of people who filled out their on line form. They copied insurance cards, gave me a card to record my shot, then sent me to the next table to get my shot. Hardly felt anything when needle went in, a split second sting

and a bandaid and I was done. A 15 minute wait for observation. Went to another table, was given a second appointment for next month. Out the door. 25 minutes altogether and I was headed home. There is a form for 65 and older which is on their Facebook page. That is the next group. There are no walk ins allowed, in order to keep on schedule, so fill out the form and submit it. Laura J. Facebook construction paused for Spring Break We have now successfully completed the horizontal directional drilling (HDD) work as planned on our Jupiter subsea cable landing in Tierra Del Mar, and construction is now paused for spring break. We will continue the remain-

ing site construction work on April 6, which includes manhole and conduit construction. We will remove all remaining construction equipment by April 30. Shortly after, we will begin our site restoration efforts to give the lot a more pleasing, natural Oregon Coast appearance. Our restoration landscaping plan includes native plants that are wind-tolerant, erosion-controlling, and that can establish quickly with low input and maintenance of existing natural vegetation. The proposed plant list was reviewed by naturalists from both Oregon State Parks and the Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex, and the restoration by a local landscaping firm will be done in accordance with their recommendations. To clarify some confusion that may exist, there has been no modification to our

Bill Landau Extension Librarian Tillamook County Library “Other duties as assigned.” Every job I have ever held has had an interesting collection of tasks that were expected but did not make it into the job description. The job of library manager has an extra-long list of these duties and they certainly make the job exciting…and unpredictable! While many of the extra duties are things I do not even want to write about (also known as bathroom messes), many of them are a real joy. One of my most memorable extra duties has been dressing up in a pirate costume many times each year to parade around as the library mascot, Captain Book. People who know me would testify that my true personality is nothing like a pirate. But when it comes to library promotion, it’s a pirate’s life for me! Captain Book often leads the Library Book Cart Drill Team down the streets during summer parade season. While those performances are usually hot and sweaty, the love we receive from the crowd makes it all worth it. Besides, when else could I ever expect

am thrilled to welcome Shannon Cahoon to the Tillamook Chamber Board of Directors. Shannon is the Community Development Manager at TLC, a Division of Fibre Federal Credit Union. In her role there, Shannon helps connect the credit union with organizations and people to see how they can partner to help meet a need. We already have a very robust relationship with Shannon in her professional role, as TLC, a Division of Fibre Federal Credit Union has been a loyal sponsor and supporter of many of the Chamber’s efforts, including our annual community banquet, the Tillamook Farmers Market, and our up-andcoming video podcast (more on that later). Shannon recently relocated to Tillamook after her job brought her here so frequently and she fell in love with the area. She said she was motivated to join the Chamber Board of Directors because she believes

to push a book cart down the middle of Highway 101 while having people cheer for us? And while every parade is fun, the cheers are always extra-exuberant as we sashay towards the ocean, down Laneda Avenue in Manzanita. Another extra duty that takes me WAY out of my comfort zone is driving the 30-foot-long bookmobile around the county to cover when the regular driver is not available. Before being trained to drive the giant bus, the biggest vehicle I had driven was a minivan. Nothing compares to the thrill of feeling the bookmobile quiver and rock when meeting a fast-flying logging truck on the winding, twisting curves of Highway 101! One of my favorite “other duties as assigned” has been conducting storytimes. While facing a room full of little kids would be enough to frighten

Putting on a Curious George costume to greet people at the fair and other library events is another duty that is a lot of fun…but it also comes with some drawbacks. Trying to see my surroundings through the little mesh circle in the monkey’s head is quite challenging. While it is a delight to see the joy on the kids’ faces, it is the teens and adults that sometimes hug a little too intensely for the man in the sweaty monkey suit! Other odd jobs in the library include dressing up as Santa, helping capture various winged or furry critters that find their way into the library, babysitting with snakes while the Reptile Man runs an errand, and conducting an impromptu singalong for a room full of children when the hired performer was caught in traffic. So, if you have ever wondered what it is like to work in a library, now you know that even though we are librarians, we don’t always go “by the book”. You just do whatever you need to do to promote the library. But often it is those extra duties that make the best memories!

or many of us spring has arrived here on the coast and I think watching the incredible grass growth is one of the most fascinating part of our agriculture production system. Some of you might think watching paint dry would be more exciting, but let me explain. The grass we see growing on our local farms is arguably as productive and important as any grass in the world. It harvests energy from the sun, sequesters carbon from the atmosphere, provides the foundation of feed, and plays a critical role in nutrient re-cycling for local dairy producers. Grass can provide inexpensive nutrients for growth and production. The grass plant is made of roots, leaves, stems and seed. Roots draw nutrients from the soil for growth and provide nutrient storage for the plant. Leaves catch sunlight for photosynthesis of carbohydrates and the conversion of nitrogen into protein. The stem and seed head allow the plant to reproduce. It is natural for a grass plant to grow rapidly in the spring and produce seed in early summer unless it’s regularly harvested through grazing or mechanical harvest. By cutting the grass regularly, producers not only maximize grass growth (dry matter and

total feed grown) but also maximize the quality of the feed produced. In November, when grass is least productive, roughly 18 lbs of grass is grown per acre each day. Growth peaks in June at about 100 lbs per acre each day. For the past several months, dairy producers who graze have been fixing fences that were torn up by elk traffic over the winter. Many are already getting cows out to pasture. Producers who mechanically harvest grass have been preparing their mowers, choppers and balers for harvest, which often starts in April depending on the weather. Grass is truly an incredible resource. It’s not only important here in Tillamook County, but globally. It helps drive our local economy by providing an incredibly valuable feedstuff for our dairy industry. I would argue it is especially important in feeding the world. So the next time you’re out enjoying our beautiful county, I hope you look at the fields of green grass through a different lens. I know our dairy farmers are out watching grass grow and now maybe you will as well.

Pharmacy or Farmacy? Food has become much more complicated than it once was. Instead of simple ingredients going into homemade foods, we have an abundance of time-saving products that may have a more enticing taste and may also be a cheaper way to get a filling meal on the table. Is it worth it to save time with convenient foods? Which convenient foods aren’t as nourishing? Are these foods helping us toward our desire to feel good and enjoy our health? In comes the concept of food as medicine. Food is nature’s medicine, providing our body with the building blocks that it needs to maintain health. Some say that we can pay a farmer now, or a pharmacy later. And while this statement may oversimplify the whole picture of nutrition and health, hopefully it has you thinking. In reading the ideas below, you may draw some connections between what is (or isn’t) on your fork and how you’re feeling. Note: If you decide to take a food as medicine approach to eating, it is important to

continue to take medications as prescribed and consult with your medical provider before making any medication changes. A salad with dinner is not a replacement for a specific medication, though several small steps over time may begin to shift things in a positive direction. Food informs our bodies Food is a powerful source of information for our bodies and we have several opportunities each day to make choices about what food we will eat. The field of epigenetics looks at how behaviors and environment can affect the expression of our genes. For someone with a family history of a particular condition or disease, there may be nutrition and lifestyle factors that can alter gene expression in a way that protects from that condition or disease. While we don’t need to strive for perfection with our food choices or become fearful of eating something that isn’t seen as nutritious, there are many ways we can adjust our food choices to be supportive of our health. Whether you already have a health-related diagnosis or are focused on prevention, there are many ways you can start making changes to move

reetings Bay City! A belated happy St. Patricks Day. St. Patricks is a very big day in the veryIrish Daily home. None of us were as “Irish” as hubby Kin’s sister, Arlene. She had boxes and boxes of research and pictures of her dream trip to Ireland to meet the Dailys and Fitzgeralds. The Irish are masters of story telling; no wonder Arlene was a prolific published writer under the name Monica Heath, and her own name, Arlene Fitzgerald. Many of her gothic mysteries were set in Ireland. His brother Clete and other sister, Jessie, also wrote wonderful stories and poetry. Kin’s family is also musical; all of them sing and play instruments. Kin’s dad used to entertain us with his Irish jig. Kin’s mom didn’t take a backseat in artistic talent; her art work earned her the distinction of being Southern Oregon Artist of the Year for several years running. And true to her very humble nature, where did she keep her ribbons and awards?... in a box under the bed. The Oregonian Sunday Edition added a spring treat; not one, but two inserts. The inserts were titled “Spring”, and asked the question, “Are you ready to spring into a new season?”, and continued with “Use our tips to help organize inside and outside your home, exercise a little self-care, freshen up your finances, hey, have a little fun!” Well, as to their first question, I think everyone wants a new season....but I like how they ended with encouraging words “Have a little fun”! I take the business of caring for home and family very seriously, and two suggestions from decluttering expert Marie Kondo caught my attention: #1. Take care of the items in your home with gratitude, and #2. Defeating clutter is to give every item a home. According to Andrew Selsky (Associated Press), people in Oregon will be better prepared for earthquakes. On March 11th Oregon joined California and Washington as part of the ShakeAlert system that is operated by the U.S. Geological Survey. The system will send earthquake alerts to cell phones to allow people to seek cover before the shaking starts. With experts saying that “the big one” is coming, whether tomorrow or 50 years from now, its good to know that scientists are finding ways to help us be prepared. Bay City residents, don’t forget that there is a disaster preparedness meeting March 29th at 6 p.m. at City Hall. Please come and provide your ideas for how to make sure that everyone in our community has emergency supplies, and knows where to go and what to do in the

event of a natural disaster. The committee also hopes to have more information on the ShakeAlert system coming to Oregon. The Bay City Council and Budget Committee will hold a Special Meeting on Tuesday, March 30, 2021, beginning at 6 p.m. at City Hall. OBITUARIES William Robert “Billy” Brown Aug. 21, 1965 - March 5, 2021

illiam Robert “Bill” Brown was born August 21, 1965, Tillamook, Oregon, and passed away March 5, 2021, Naples, Maine. Bill is survived by his daughter, Tristan Ariana Brown, Berwick, ME; his parents, Bonita J. Neilson Blaser, Tillamook, OR, and Henry P. Brown, Boston MA; siblings, Abby Kennerson Matisko, Joel, Henry, and Olivia Brown, Tamara and Scott Tate, Taunya Blaser Pitcher, Michelle Blaser Dooher, Heather Blaser Dillon; two Aunts, Ellen Jo Neilson Bodine, and Judith Brown Gairachty; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and his loving faithful bullmastiff Brutus. Bill spent his early years in Tillamook, OR, moving with his mother to southern California at age 2, to join his father. Summers were often spent visiting his grandparent’s farm in Tillamook, where his grandfather introduced him to hunting, crab-

bing, clam digging, fishing. Grandpa Neilson would build mini go-carts for Billy and his cousins, Steve and Katrina, to race up and down the road. On the farm there was always a pony to ride, Pedro and Pablo the donkeys to feed, pet and maybe sneak a ride on, if you could hang on. Growing up in Lake Forest, California, with Tammy and Scott Tate, he loved the beach, boogie boarding, boating, swimming, bicycling, tent camping, skateboarding and later motorcycle riding. Bill still has many friends in the Lake Forest area. At age 14, he relocated to Maine where he lived with his father. Bill had an aversion to staying in school and his father introduced him to a trade, pointing, and eventually joining the Massachusetts Bricklayers Union, Local #3, in 1998. Later Bill participated in highrise rescue. He retired in 2009 due to declining health issues (COPD, diabetes, and later Parkinson’s disease). Bill loved seafood, cooking authentic Italian food and especially entertaining his many friends, and, like his Grandpa Neilson, he especially loved life and to tease, yank your chain, always clowning around. Two memorial celebrations are planned; a family picnic on his birthday in Boston, and a gathering of his westcoast family and friends later in Tillamook.

Donald Duane Braden Jan. 29, 1948 - 2021

onald Duane Braden passed away peacefully in Mesa, Arizona at the age of 73. Don was born on January 29th, 1948 in Tillamook, Oregon to Dorothy Nelson Braden and Derral Braden. Don graduated from Neah-Kah-Nie High School in 1966. He joined the United States Army shortly after high school. Don was part of the Army National Guard for over 20 years. Donald will be remembered as a loving father, son, brother, and friend. Like his father, he had

a passion for horse racing. He was also known as a “green thumb” as he loved to garden. After his father’s passing, Don went to spend his winter in Mesa, AZ. He enjoyed his time at the local “swap meet”, loved picking fresh lemons off trees, hiking and exploring his surrounding all while smiling in the sunshine. Don is survived by his daughter, Donia Braden Parrish (and husband Nate) of Sherwood; stepdaughter, Tammy Johnson (and husband Steve) of Astoria, and two sons. Also survived and loved by many brother and sisters, nieces and nephews. Proceeded in death by his brother. A memorial service will be announce at a later time. Donald’s interment will be at the Bay City Cemetery at the family plot.

After retiring in 2006, Stephen and Jennifer moved to the Oregon Coast where he enjoyed golfing, walking on the beach, and spending time with family and friends. Steve worked part-time at the

Manzanita Golf Course for 8 years and enjoyed talking to and meeting new people. Steve was predeceased by his parents. ane L. Sheahan, 57, Green Bay, formerly of Tillamook, Oregon, passed away in her sleep on Thursday, March 11, 2021 after a lengthy battle with Multiple System Atrophy. She was born on December 26, 1963 in Tigard, Oregon to Tom and Jean (Thille) Butterfield. Jane obtained an associate degree in Natural Resources. On July 25, 2009, she married Joseph Sheahan at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Maple Grove, Wisconsin. Jane was an adventurous and outdoor woman who loved fishing, hunting and camping. This adventurous spirit led her to be chased by a grizzly bear and being caught in a typhoon off the coast of California while fishing, among many other

adventures. Jane had a fondness for various farm animals especially chickens and sheep. She was an avid gem hunter, searching for various crystals. Jane also enjoyed gardening, crafts and cooking. She worked for a number of state and federal agencies in Natural Resources and Fisheries. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Sheahan; son, Christopher Chen; father and mother, Tom and Jean Butterfield; sister, Christine (Kenny) Gibbs; aunt, Joanne Rivas; Mark (Barbie Williams) Butterfield; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral Mass took place on Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church. In 1949 Hazel married her first husband, Kenneth Ray and together had 7 children: triplets Lois, Betty, and Edna, Charlene, Donna, Stanley, and Michael. In the early 1970s, Hazel and Kenneth parted ways and remained friends throughout life. In 1994, Hazel married her second husband George Robinson. Although Hazel had many difficulties and losses throughout life, she dedicated her life to being a fantastic mother/grandmother/friend;

She grew up on a farm in Mott, North Dakota with her 12 siblings until she moved to Kelso, Washington. She met the love of her life Alvin Koehmstedt at a dance and they were married six months later on January 17, 1948 in Kelso, Washington at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. They moved to Portland where they raised their three children, Linda, Ron and Mark. Alvin worked for 35 years at the Linnton Plywood Mill and Agnes worked with the Portland Public School district in the kitchen and then later became a teacher’s aide and helped children learn to read. Agnes enjoyed volunteering at the “Kit & Caboodle” Thrift Store in Tillamook and various activities including the Crab Races and Garibaldi Days. She was a very active member of her church St. Mary’s by the Sea and was always willing to lend a helping hand. She enjoyed working in her garden and tending to her flowers. She loved to cook whether it was getting meals ready for Al and their son Mark when they would go hunting and fishing or making fresh cinnamon rolls and pies. Her homemade applesauce was often fought over by her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She could often be found playing Bridge or Skip Bo with friends or beating the pants off everyone as the Queen of BINGO. She was preceded in death by her husband Alvin on May 24, 2015 and she passed on to meet him on March 11th, 2021. She was also preceded in death by her granddaughter Jill Amanda Koehmstedt. She will be greatly missed by her children, their spouses, 3 grandchildren, their spouses, her 9 great grandchildren and many friends.
