Nestucca parents protest school board mandates Group asking district leaders to step down

ednesday, February 9th parents along with community members gathered outside the Nestucca Valley kindergarten8th grade school building to protest the lack of community input in school board meetings and decisions. Their message was clear, listen to us. “I don’t see why children should have to spend one more minute in a mask to protect adults at the school who are already vaccinated. It’s just wrong,” said April Bailey, a local concerned parent and co-organizer of the protest. Kaili Jensen, parent leader of the protest, attended Nestucca schools herself and currently has 4 children in the Nestucca School District. “We’re done following blindly, the school board members need to pay attention to us,” Jensen said. The signs held up by Jensen’s children read “Step up for our kids or step down from the board” , “Public Schools deserve Public Input” and “No more Masks.” There were a little fewer than 50 people that attended the in-person protest in front of the school. About 53 community members logged-on to attend the zoom school board meeting. “The school board meetings have been held virtually via zoom so when parents want make comments the board doesn’t agree with, they get muted,” said Shawn Best a Nestucca school parent. At this particular meeting, anyone that wanted to speak was
allowed. Josh Armstrong, a parent, spoke at the meeting about the changes he has seen in his 7th grade daughter since the COVID-19 pandemic hit more than 2 years ago. He said that the school today has a “prison atmosphere” and that his daughter doesn’t even want to go anymore. Jensen said she has seen the same changes in her older kids. Because of vaccine and mask mandates for school employees, the students have lost some of their sports coaches and volunteers. At the meeting parents were voicing their concerns, calling for religious exemptions to be upheld for these coaches and volunteers unwilling to get the COVID-19 vaccine. “These mandates have really affected the older kids that know what school was like before all of this ridiculousness.” Jensen said. “It’s the kids that are suffering,” she added. April Bailey said in her comments to the board, “We will happily take board resignations tonight. Resign, recall or repent.” After what they witnessed at the meeting, Bailey and Jensen plan to start the process of getting the school board members replaced. The Nestucca Valley School District is located in the southern portion of Tillamook County and includes the communities of Beaver, Hebo, Cloverdale, Pacific City/ Woods, Sandlake and Neskowin. The school board consists of 5 elected members who make decisions for the schools. “I appreciated the people being there and voicing their opinions, there’s probably a good chance of

now we are following the laws and doing what is best for all students,” he added.

Help wanted everywhere in Tillamook County I

f you tuned in to the Tillamook County leadership meeting Monday, February 7th it was clear that almost all government departments are short staffed. From the parks department to the library, practically all Tillamook government departments are hiring. It doesn’t end with government jobs. Staffing issues have become a common theme amongst business across Tillamook County. Erik Knoder, the regional economist for the State of Oregon employment department has been tracking the data and reported, “The current labor market for Tillamook is the tightest it’s been since the year 2000.” According to the data from the Oregon Employment Department, it’s tough right now for businesses to find workers and it’s not going to get easier as we make our way towards the summer season. JoAnn Woelfle, Tillamook County Parks Director said they are so short staffed they don’t have enough employees to answer the phones for summer camping reservations. Because of this, they have been forced to rely more on their online system. On February 1, the system opened to the public, the website shut down twice due to the high number of people trying to pay online at the same time. After all was said and done, the parks collected $170,000 in camping reservations made in 3 days. For Woelfle, looking ahead to July 4th weekend is a little scary because she currently has a to-
tal of 2 janitorial staff on the payroll. Needless to say, the Parks Department is hiring maintenance workers. According to WorkSource Oregon centers, Oregon’s health care and social assistance providers are hiring at an unprecedented rate. With about 15,000 job vacancies in health care, there is an urgent, statewide need to fill health care and other positions that support the health care industry, like food service, facilities, and business administration. The quantitative data is there, but the qualitative data isn’t clear. Job openings are on the rise but we don’t have the data to support exactly why it’s so hard to get the positions filled. “We can only speculate,” said Knoder. It could be that the wages being offered are too low. Maybe it’s because in this post-pandemic season of life, families have found ways to live off of a single income. Is it due to the serious lack affordable housing in this region or the dire need for affordable childcare? Maybe it’s because of the federal pandemic aid dollars, or the state aid money that some receive. The Bureau of Labor Statistics recently reported unemployment rate comparisons for all 50 states. As of December 2021, there were 12 states with unemployment rates at or below their all-time low. While
Oregon has not yet returned to record low unemployment, it is one of four states with a higher labor force participation rate at the end of 2021 than before the pandemic recession. Tillamook County COVID-19 Update: Experts believe this finally moving in the right direction

n the weekly Tillamook County community update meeting held every Tuesday morning at 8am, Eric Swanson from Adventist Health Tillamook reported, “Hospital admissions for Region 1, which includes Clackamas, Clatsop, Columbia, Multnomah, Tillamook and Washington counties, are flat-lining or declining.” There’s a steady bi-weekly decline in hospital admissions for COVID-19 in the state of Oregon overall. “We’re not done with the fight quite yet, but things look promising,” Swanson added. In the meeting Swanson thanked all of the dedicated professionals getting us through the past 2 years. “We just don’t want people to be sick, it’s been a rough 2 years,” he said. Ed Colson from Tillamook County Community Health Center announced they have received even more quick antigen COVID-19 home test kits to distribute to the community. North Jetty rocks have arrived for Tillamook Bay repairs ave you seen the semi trucks carrying giant rocks down the road recently? The purpose of these rocks is to restore the structural integrity of the north jetty and improve the function of the navigation channel. These north jetty rocks are not to be confused with the $62 million dollars south jetty project. February 28th is the current goal for stone placement on the north
jetty. The $62M south jetty repair project is in the planning stages but is next on the docket. According to the Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers the north jetty repairs consist of procurement of approximately 30,700 tons jetty armor stones. The stones range in size from 4 to 24 tons in weight. The stones will be placed individually along the identified repair areas. All armor stone must have a minimum unit weight of 167 pounds per square foot. These stones

Jetty armor stone must pass a series of chemical and physical durability tests to ensure minimal degradation over the project design life. To maximize life-cycle cost benefits; jetty armor stone must be large, dense, chemically and physically stable. Stone that meets these requirements is not entirely common, thus, for most jetty repair or rehabilitation projects it is necessary to source stone some distance from the project. In the case of Tillamook north jetty, much of the stone to be utilized in this repair is going to be sourced nearby and along the Oregon Coast. Most of this locally available stone is metamorphic rock, which tends to have an increased relative density and physically durable characteristics associated with its formation along the active convergent plate margin (Cascadia Subduction Zone). Multiple stones sources are necessary to generate enough stone to support the massive stone quantity and construction schedule. Photo by Ashley Tike “We’re sad and still in shock, they were like family members to us,” Kyle, Alora and Sami, care providers at Kilchis House said. 100% of Kilchis House and Nehalem Bay House residents successfully find new housing after CARE announces closure of Assisted Living Facilities in December. In December, the CARE Board of Directors announced that they would be closing the Kilchis House and Nehalem Bay House. Since then, CARE and Northwest Senior and Disability Service have been working diligently with their residents and their families to find long-term, sustainable housing options. They are pleased to report that all 56 residents have identified the housing solution that works best for their individual situation. Unfortunately, due to the limited number of beds in Tillamook County, not everyone was able to remain in the county. Close to 40% of those who left the
county are doing so to receive the type of skilled nursing or memory care that are simply not available anywhere in Tillamook County. After reviewing the financial performance of their assisted living facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic, the CARE Board of Directors, Peter Starkey, made the difficult decision to close the Kilchis House and the Nehalem Bay House, effective February 11. “The process has been hard on the residents, their families and our staff but we can confidently say that all our residents have found a housing solution that fits their individual needs,” Starkey said. CARE also announced that since our decision was made to close in December, close to 80% of the staff have remained with the houses and their residents. “I cannot express how grateful we are for the dedication our staff has shown during this challenging
time,” reflected Starkey. “We are also so grateful to our partners around Tillamook who made is possible for us to retain these incredible people as part of our community,” continues Starkey, “and from what we are hearing, all of our staff will be remaining in Tillamook County to begin the next chapter of their career.” The CARE Board of Directors, in consultation with community partners and stakeholders, continues to review all options for the future of CARE and these properties. “There is no plan for the empty buildings as of right now, we plan to come up with what to do with them in the coming weeks,” said Starkey. In the February 1st edition of the Headlight Herald, Carla Albright had a Garden Matters column on planting for pollinators. I decided to continue that discussion but from the honey bee perspective. You probably know that about one third of the foods we eat require pollination but did you know that those pollinated fruits, vegetables and grains generate 90% of the nutrients we need? We would be in sad, unhealthy shape without pollinators. There are over six hundred different kinds of bees just in Oregon! All but the honey bee are referred to as “solitary bees”. That’s because for
those species only the queen lives through the winter. Those bees don’t need lots of pollen or honey. Mason bees are actually better pollinators than honey bees but they are around only from March until June and they don’t fly farther
than about five hundred feet. So that leaves us with the hard-working honey bees. Honey bees forage for pollen, nectar, water and propolis. We’ll just talk about pollen today. Pollen is the bee’s protein, amino acids, lipids, micronutrients, enzymes and on and on. (FYI: honey provides their carbs.) Remember that a colony is made up of one queen, 15% drones which are all males, and tens of thousands of workers, all female. From the age of six days to eleven days all worker bees become nurse bees. They are the only bees that need protein but they must have it in order to make

Tillamook Beekeepers Association announce Raffle For the 5th straight year, the Tillamook Beekeepers Association has raffled off beautifully handcrafted beehives to help raise funds to help save the Tillamook honey bee. Sadly, the honey bees have had another hard winter and it looks like upwards of 40% of the honey bee colonies in our region have died off. Bees are essential to human survival as 1/3 of every bite we humans consume is dependent on bees pollinating grains, fruits and vegetables. The funds raised by raffling off these hives will be a great boon to the honey bees and have indeed helped save the honey bees thus far, but more is needed. Last year, the Tillamook Beekeepers Association donated $2,500 worth of bee friendly flowering trees to the cities of Tillamook and Manzanita. This year, plans are already in place to continue with this tree planting project. One bee friendly flowering tree is worth an acre of flowers to the honey bee. Additionally, $1,000 was donated in 2021 to the Oregon State University Bee Lab to assist in research projects designed to help save the bee. This year’s raffle hive depicting Cape Meares Lighthouse was designed and handcrafted by new beekeepers Patsy and Chris Weber of Twin Rocks. Tickets are on sale for $5 each or a bundle of 5 for $20 at www.tillamookbeekeepers. org. A 2nd place prize of a $100 gift certificate for the TCCA Farm Store is part of this raffle. bees love include pussy willows, alders, skunk cabbage, dandelions, mustard, fruit trees and maples to name a few. In the summer they have the berries and vegetables. But bees need pollen throughout the warm parts of the year. Sometimes especially after the spring flowering trees are done, beekeepers have to feed their honey bees “pollen patties” to ensure that the colony keeps growing. It’s easy to imagine bees pollinating flowering trees and plants but it surprised me a little to realize that they pollinate carrots, broccoli, onions and all kinds of grains and root vegetables. We don’t ordinarily see the flowers of a carrot or onion plant but think about it. That package of vegetable seeds you buy in the store in the spring only happen because pollinators pollinated flowering carrots and onions, etc. somewhere, maybe in Madras or eastern Oregon. The largest use of honey bees happens in California and it’s happening right now. Over a million (yes, a million!) hives are put on semi-trailers from all over the country and transported to California for three weeks to pollinate the
almonds. No honey bees? No almonds. Commercial beekeepers had to “wake up” their honey bees in December by feeding them pollen patties so the colony would grow bigger and bigger and be ready for the almonds in February. They didn’t exactly wake them up because bees don’t go to sleep or go dormant. But the queen doesn’t ordinarily lay eggs in winter. She waits for the pollen to come in which is what happens when the commercial beekeepers or anyone feeds a colony pollen. So the next time you eat an apple or cherry or almond or carrot, thank a bee! You will truly enjoy seeing the annuals, perennials, herbs, trees that honey bees love. t was a case of déjà vu. As we left Cape Meares, we came across a tow truck pulling a severely crumpled vehicle from the north side of Bayocean Road, just east of the dike road. We had seen the same thing only a month ago. A Cape Meares neighbor reported
that this vehicle was actually a truck that had landed upside down in the bay! She said if it had been high tide, the two individuals in the truck would have been under water. Slow down out there, folks. In continuing road news, kudos to Rep. Suzanne Weber

It’s common to see raccoons washing their food in water, but swimming is something else. A number of us have been privileged to see our local elk herd swimming in the lake, but this is the first report we have of raccoons doing the same. n this month’s edition of Dispatch from the WAVE, I wanted to take a moment to highlight our Dial-A-Ride services, recap the changes we made to this program during the last year, and share our plans for future expansion of the service. On July 1, 2021, we implemented a new base-plus-mileage fare system for Dial-A-Ride and expanded its availability to allow trips from any location to any destination within Tillamook County. Under the old system, rides were restricted to destinations within a single “zone” within Tillamook County (North County, Central County, and South County) or from any zone to downtown Tillamook for medical purposes only. Our new system allows trips to be taken to and from any destination within Tillamook County. You can now schedule a Dial-A-Ride to get from Manzanita to Neskowin, Oceanside to the Forest Center, or anywhere in between. This on-demand service is available to anyone in Tillamook County for $4.00 for the first 5 miles, then just 50 cents per mile for additional
miles. Want to go from Beaver to the Tillamook Coliseum Theater? This roughly 14.8 mile one-way trip would cost $8.50 ($4.00 base fare plus 9 additional miles at 50 cents per mile). Prior to the new fare system, this trip wouldn’t have been possible through our ondemand service. Since implementation, we’ve seen significant changes in the types and lengths of trips being taken using the Dial-ARide service. Prior to the new policy, about 90% of all trips were about 5 miles in length. Only 4% of trips were greater than 5 miles, due largely to the one-zone restriction. (The rest of the trips were for medical purposes). Today, about 67% of trips are longer than 5 miles and ridership has increased by more than 20%, despite the continued impact of the COVID pandemic. This shows that we are now serving more people in more meaningful ways, while ensuring that we are working towards our mission of sustain-
able transit services. We anticipate additional expansions for Dial-A-Ride in the future. New technology is making it possible to efficiently service less population dense, rural areas through on-demand services in complement to traditional fixed route (IE, bus) services. This technology will also assist the District in deploying on-demand drivers in a more efficient manner, especially in face of a continued nation-wide driver shortage. We are looking forward to adding evening and weekend hour Dial-A-Ride services as we continue to integrate this new technology and expand our driver family. A few final notes- we implemented a new bus schedule on January 23, which included several additional trips each day. or most people, February brings to mind chocolates, bouquets and other thoughts of Valentine’s Day. But this year for me, my excitement is shared with another February event: the launch of Young Pros Tillamook. Young Pros Tillamook is a network of likeminded young professionals who work together to grow, connect and engage with each other and the broader Tillamook Community. Through events and programming, the group offers a way to meet and foster relationships with other young professionals; develop your personal and professional skills; and make a positive impact on the community through volunteer work and service projects. It is targeted at people aged 21 – 40, but it can also include people looking to re-enter the workforce or people who are making a career change. We are officially kicking off the Young Pros network and programming on February 25 with a launch party at the Chamber office. Anyone who is interested in learning more about Young Pros is invited to attend. There will be drinks, appetizers and a lot of really great people. My vision for the Young Pros is to create a sense of community for emerging leaders and young professionals here, so they feel like they can invest in Tillamook for the long-term. This is especially important for people who are moving to the community from other places. Those of us who have lived in Tillamook all our lives know this is a good place to raise a family, find friends and build a career. But that isn’t always the case, and it’s not always clear for someone who is new here, either. There are tons of town with tons of jobs all over the country they could choose to move to instead, so why
should anyone choose to live in Tillamook? We want the Young Pros to be part of that answer. There’s a network of likeminded young professionals here who want to make a positive difference in their community. And if you join that network, you’ll find it easy to meet new friends and feel supported. All of that encourages talented young professionals to stay in our community, because they will come to know and champion how wonderful it is to live, work and play in Tillamook. If all this talk of a young professionals group gives you a sense of déjà vu, that’s because this isn’t our first time launching a young professionals network. Our plan for starting a group like this date back to 2014, when a small group of young professionals first floated the idea by the Chamber. We loved the vision, but at the time, we didn’t have the capacity to take on a brand-new program like this. About five years later, in 2019, another small group came to us with the idea of starting a young professionals group. This time, the Chamber was positioned well to help support the program, and we helped spread the word and coordinate events as interest in the program quickly grew. The 2019 young professionals group started strong but eventually faded due to one big challenge: The leadership team for the program were volunteers who operated autonomously from the Chamber. That gave the team a lot of freedom to mold the group how they saw fit, but it also made it difficult to support consistent programming for as many as 75 members while they focused on their own jobs, community involvements and families. With no organizational tie to ensure there was at least one person dedicated to overseeing the programming when life got busy for the leader-
ship team, the group eventually fizzled out. Now we’re back with another attempt at creating a young professionals network. And naturally, we expect the community to ask us, “What makes this time different?” That’s an honest question with a few answers. First, we’ve had time to look back at the first two tries and honestly evaluate what went well and what didn’t. We know that there needs to be some organizational ties, so there’s a consistent leader who can focus on planning events and managing the network fulltime, and not as a volunteer side gig. Our goal is to hire a program manager that will oversee Young Pros as one of their projects. Second, we have crosscommunity support to get this program going. It’s not just a small group of young professionals who want to see this group launched. It’s also large employers and community partners. For example, the Tillamook County Creamery Association is sponsoring the program this year, so all our young pros can have a free membership to test it out. Our support also comes from the brand-new Tillamook Chamber Community Foundation. The Young Pros program will operate under the Foundation, which just raised $16,000 at the Community Awards Banquet to launch programs just like this one. The vision and the drive for a young professionals group is still present, but now we’ve got a solid plan, organizational capacity and widespread support to make that vision a long-lasting, fun and viable reality. by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American children’s book published the previous year. It was 100 years ago that the first award was presented to Willem van Loon’s book, The Story of Mankind. I have never read that book, but I just finished reading this year’s winner, The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera. It is an intense, futuristic tale in which our Earth is destroyed by Halley’s comet. A select group of scientists and their families are chosen to board massive spaceships to carry on the human race on a new planet. Of course, things do not go as planned and therein lies the gripping story. If you are looking for an adventure with lots of plot twists, I can enthusiastically recommend this book! Other than the first Newbery being named, what else happened 100 years ago? Some very important people were born, including Judy Garland, Ava Gardner, Doris Day, “Peanuts” creator Charles Schulz, Norman Lear, and of course, a favorite actress of mine, Betty White. Some classic novels were published in 1922, including Ulysses by James Joyce, and The Waste Land by T. S. Eliot. For kids, The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams made its debut. On the silver screen, Nanook of the North was the hot ticket and was praised as the first film to successfully combine documentary footage with creative storytelling. Things were a lot cheaper 100 years ago. A first-class stamp was two cents, and today it is 58 cents. Gas was only 11 cents per gallon. One hundred dollars in 1922 would actually be the equivalent of $1,654.45 today! There were a lot of “firsts” in 1922. The maga-
zine Reader’s Digest was first published in February that year. A patent was issued for the ice cream novelty, Eskimo Pie. While we are talking about sweets, the electric blender was introduced in 1922 as a great way to make milk shakes and malts. So perhaps it is no coincidence that during that same year, insulin was first used to treat people with diabetes! President Warren Harding installed the first radio inside the White House, and the famous California venue called the Hollywood Bowl opened in July of 1922. That was also the year that the tomb of King Tutankhamun was discovered in Egypt. So many things have changed in the past century, but I’d like to highlight one important part of Tillamook that has remained a constant for over 100 years. The library in Tillamook! It was just 15 years old in 1922. On October 21, 1907, the Tillamook City Council provided the impetus for passing a resolution to fund our first public library. The location of the first Tillamook City Library was in the Council Chambers at the City Hall, located on Ivy Avenue. We have been in several locations since then and eventually became the Tillamook County Library. We grew from one employee (the librarian) to the current 26 - 28 staff members. Our single location has blossomed into six libraries spread around the county... plus our mobile location, the Bookmobile! With all of this growth and changes, one thing has not wavered...our vision and mission to bring the residents of Tillamook County the best library service possible. We plan on being here in another 100 years, to continue to provide a great range of services for our county.

herrie Lee Burdick was born to Kenneth and Florence Hale on December 24, 1966 in Petaluma, California. She passed away January 21, 2022 at home in Tillamook, Oregon. Sherrie moved to the Tillamook area in 1971 and married Kenny Burdick in 1986. Sherrie performed a lot of volunteer services such as fostering dogs for animal shelters, volunteering at her children’s school and helping out with senior care. When Sherrie wasn’t helping others, she had
a multitude of hobbies she’d like to do; fishing, gardening, bee keeping, fostering dogs, cooking/baking, raising chickens, crocheting and taking road trips on motorcycles. Sherrie is survived by her loving Husband of 36 years, Kenny Burdick of Tillamook. Her daughter, Tina Lincoln of Tillamook. Son Kenneth and wife Hester Burdick of Tillamook. Grand children Lucy Lincoln, of Tillamook and Hope Burdick of Beufort, N.C. Her Father Kenneth Hale of Tillamook, Step father Louie Blaser, Step mother; Julie Hale. Brother Kenneth Hale Jr. and wife Tennora of Tillamook. Step Brother Brent Blaser of Tillamook. Sister Violet Hale of Tillamook. Laurice W. Davis Oct. 14, 1938 - Feb. 6, 2022

aurice W. Davis passed away peacefully on the morning of February 6, 2022, at the age of 83, in Salem, OR. Laurice was born to Lawrence & Marie Sindberg on October 14,1938, in Chicago, Illinois. Laurice met her husband Jack Davis and was married July 14, 1980, in Woodburn, OR. Laurice
and Jack lived & worked in Nehalem, OR for many years. Jack had to be moved to a care facility. Laurice often visited Jack at the care facility, and enjoyed traveling by bus between Tillamook and Nehalem. Laurice was often seen pushing her cart rain or shine. She was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and loved to listen to The Tabernacle on Temple Square. Laurice is survived by her husband Jack Davis of Lake Oswego. To truly know her was to love her, and she will be dearly missed by those she loved. Arrangements in care of Johnson Funeral Home, Salem OR. No service; private cremation.
Johnney D. Dietrich Oct. 19, 1949 - Feb. 3, 2022

ohnney Duane Dietrich was born to Dorris Braden and Arnold Dietrich on October 19, 1949 in Tillamook, Oregon and passed away in Tillamook on February 3, 2022. John graduated from Tillamook High School in l967 and was drafted into the army in 1969. He served in Vietnam from January 1970 till March 1971. John worked for Crown Zellerbach until they closed their operation here in Tillamook. He then went on to work for the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) until he retired in
2009. He volunteered many years for the Tillamook Rodeo and Tillamook County Fair. He enjoyed spending time in LaPine at the cabin he and Suzann built after retirement as well as traveling with their travel trailer and hunting in Eastern Oregon with a group of guys he went to highschool with. He loved having big family barbecues in the back yard and having everyone together. John is survived by his wife Suzann, daughters Jennifer Guarcello (Bryan), and Jeannie Ellerbroek (Roy), all of Tillamook. Also by grandchildren Mackenzie Guarcello, Allie Guarcello, Hailey Ellerbroek and Seth Ellerbroek. John is also survived by brothers Leonard Brogden of Tillamook and Jon Ehlers of Pendleton, Oregon. John was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Sharon and his brother Steven. A private family burial was held on February 11th. A celebration of life may be held at a later date. Arrangements are in care of Waud’s Funeral Home.
Donald Ray Long Feb. 2, 1936 - Jan. 13, 2022

onald Ray Long, 85, passed away early morning hours of 1/13/2022. Donald was born Donald Ray Long on Sunday morning at 9:50 a.m. 2/2/1936, to Alfred Franklin and U. “Bessie” (Walton) Long in Tillamook, Oregon. Don was the last of seven siblings and graduated from Nestucca Union High School, Cloverdale, Oregon in 1954. He was a 4 year letterman in Basketball, on the A team all 4 years. He also was a 4 year letterman on the Football team, Quarterback the last 3 of those 4 years. He participated in Track his Jr. and Sr. years. Don was Class Vice President his Sophomore year, and Class President his Junior year. He took Glee Club his Senior year and was on the Annual Staff his Senior year as well. Upon graduation, Don received Student Athlete of the year 1953-1954. He had a talent for sports. Basketball was his passion. Although he had a talent for other sports as well. The following is an quote from a local paper at the time of his High School years. “Tillamook Headlight Herald, Tillamook, OR in 1953. A Tillamook county boy could be leading the hit parade of Oregon high school and college basketball so far this season. When Don Long of Nestucca rammed 39 points through the hoop against the Seaside B squad recently, he surpassed Swede Halbrook’s Gill Colliseum record of 38 points, which is believed to be the supreme effort this year.” This particular night, the grandstand did shake and the crowd roared to the High Heavens. This was his top individual game score. His individual points for the year were 363 and his average was 17.3. This was for 21 games. In ’51-’52, Nestucca placed him on the All Star team for District Tournament. They placed 2nd in State Play offs. Don also participated in State High Jump, Broad Jump and Javelin. These are the listed records he held through 1955, from the Nestucca High School Annual: Track and Field: Broad Jump 17’8”, Track 880 yards 2.17.3, High Jump 5’5”, Javelin 165.8. At Seaside, OR District Meet he threw the Javelin 176’, injured his arm on the throw and was unable to attend the State Meet. Much to his disappointment. He would re-tell this story many times with much regret. In later life, he became an avid fan of the Oregon Ducks. His passion for
Jill Gertrude McAuliffe July 16, 1938 - Jan. 19, 2022

ill Gertrude McAuliffe’s magnetic personality, spunky sense of humor and fun-loving presence accompanied her every move. She went home to be with her Lord and her much-missed loved ones on January 19,
2022. Born on July 16, 1938 in Hendon, Middlesex, England, Jill joined her parents (Harold Charles Mead and Lilian May Cass), sister (Jean) and brother (Tony). They were closely knit and lived in the same split flat as her maternal grandparents. She met and married John McAuliffe and, after their separation, and her mother’s passing, moved with her father to Oceanside, Oregon to join her sister, later relocating to Netarts. Jill worked for a time as a receptionist for Tillamook’s attorneys, Albright and Kittell and for the registrar’s office at Tillamook Bay Community College. The sisters enjoyed many pleasurable activities together.

They joined a long-term local bowling league, walked their beloved dogs on the beaches, knitted and drank copious amounts of Glengettie Tea. Jill was a faithful part of Netarts Friends Church and had a heart that out-sized her petite frame. She loved all creatures deeply. Declining health necessitated a move to McMinnville, Oregon before her passing. She leaves behind two muchloved nephews (Lee Robert Mead and Raymond Anthony Mead) as well as numerous Great Nieces and Great Nephews and a multitude of emotionally wealthy friends. In Jill’s memory, please spend time with those who need you the most. That was her biggest legacy.

sports was to watch football whenever he could and the Ducks were his favorite, plus the Oregon Ducks Girls Basketball. After graduating from High School, he married his High School Sweetheart, Grace Marie Shippee on 3/5/1955. Don worked for Diamond Lumber Co. in Tillamook, OR for a short time and Grace was employed with K.T.I.L., the local radio. After living in Tillamook, they relocated to San Diego, CA close to two of his brothers. He and Grace raised a family of four children, Donald Ray Jr., Kathryn Jean, Laura Marie and Jeffrey Keith. Don was employed by Continental Baking Company as a Sales Driver for Wonder Bread for nearly 35 years. While working and raising his family, Don was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene. He helped Usher with his brother Lauren Long and also taught boys Sunday School Class. Don also was asked to Assistant Coach a boys Little League Baseball team. He was so proud to tell the story of this team. They came from the bottom of the league to take second place and only lost by one point. One of the youngsters was very much afraid of the ball, but asked Don if maybe he could try being catcher. Don told him yes he could. The result was that the youngster became more confident in his abilities. Don was very proud of those boys and what they managed to accomplish. He’d tell them, “think ahead, if that ball comes to you, what are you going to do with it.” At age 55, Don was forced to take an early retirement from his job at Wonder Bread due to a knee injury acquired from his activities in High School sports. Surgery was the solution with a prosthetic knee replacement. Don and Grace divorced in ’98 after 43 years of marriage. They remained close friends until her passing in 2015. She was 79. By that time, Don had returned to Oregon in 2002, a long time plan he had wanted to do after his retirement. Having lived the first 20 years of his life in Oregon, he was a true Oregonian and loved his home state. He especially loved watching and listening to the Ocean. In 2000, he reconnected with a childhood friend, Ilean Cook, whom he had known through grade school
and High School. She had also been married for 45 years and had four grown children. In 2005, Don and Ilean moved to Keizer, OR and married September 24th, 2006. With this marriage Don acquired four grown Step-Children and five StepGrandchildren. As the years followed, there were three more Step-Grandchildren and two Step-Great Grandchildren added to his family. Preceding Don in death are his parents Alfred and “Bessie” Long. His Brothers, Gordon Long, Leslie Long, Lauren Long, Richard Long and his sisters, Hazel Long Stalcup, and LaVelle Long Smith Archambault and his son Donald Ray Long Jr. Don leaves behind daughters Kathryn Long of Salem, OR, Laura Long Hajj (husband William Hajj) of Waldport, OR, Grandsons Brian Hajj and Evan Hajj, son Jeffrey Long of San Diego, CA and Grandchildren Joshua Long of San Francisco, CA and Jocelyn Long of San Diego, CA. His two daughters moved to Oregon 3 years ago to be closer to their father. Also left behind are his Wife Ilean Rae Cook Long and a loving marriage of 15 years in Keizer, OR. His Step-Children Debra Brown Grinde (Brett Grinde), Battle Ground, WA, Diane Brown Redmond, OR, Douglas Brown (Lisa Johnson Brown), Vernonia, OR, Vickie Brown Nogle, Forest Grove, OR. His humor, laughter, kidding and fun times for the loss of them will make a huge void in our lives. He will be missed by each and everyone of the family and friends. Don requested no service be held. t is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our brother Ed Sander. He has been living in Boardman, Oregon and working at the local Tillamook County Creamery operation, Columbia River Processing. He passed away at his home on January 28, 2022. Ed grew up in Tillamook attending Sacred Heart Grade School and Tillamook High School. Upon graduating, he started working at the Tillamook Cheese Plant, eventually transferring to Boardman when they expanded operations. Ed was an avid fisherman, enjoyed hunting in Eastern Oregon and an occasional moose trip to Canada. Ed had one rule in his life that was nonnegotiable for family, friends or acquaintances and it was “you may call me Ed, or Edward, but don’t call me Eddie”. The first is Thursday, March 3, 2022 in Boardman, OR in the Lakeside Room at Port of Morrow located at Two Marine Drive from 4-7 p.m. The second service is on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at the Tillamook Sacred Heart Cemetery grave site located on Cemetery Road in Port of Tillamook Bay at 11:00 a.m. The graveside service is followed by a luncheon at Alderbrook Hall located at 5995 Alderbrook Road, Tillamook OR. Family and friends are invited to attend these events. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in his memory to either an animal preservation or wildlife charity of your choice. Ed will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Pat has been a vital member of this community, not only for his service as a World War II veteran here, but for his many contributions to bring the Engine 90 to town, establishing Lumberman’s and Railroader’s Park, serving as a Port Commissioner, and for his work with the Tillamook County Transportation District. There will be a ceremony at 11:00 a.m. on that day at the Historic Boathouse to read and present the proclamation. March 7th is a significant date because it is the anniversary of the US Coast Guard Station on Tillamook Bay in 1908. The council is working to have Garibaldi designated as a US Coast Guard City to honor the members – past, present, and future - who have served here. Last Wednesday the mayor held a Town Hall meeting to gather input for the 2022 Garibaldi Days celebration. There were around fifteen people who participated in sharing ideas for what they would like to see at the event. There will need to be people to head up the various committees. If there are people who were on any of the past school courts, or people who grew up here, please consider giving some input to what you would like at this year’s event. I’ll keep you posted on future meetings. The Food Pantry was well attended last Friday,
Thomas Alden Henderson Aug. 16, 1943 - Feb. 4, 2022

homas Alden Henderson passed away on February 4th at home. He was born to parents Jasper Berdett Henderson and MaryAnn Lucille Sharp on August 16, 1943 in Westville, OK. Tom grew up in St. Helens, OR and graduated from St. Helens High School. He was
an Army Vet and worked in Law Enforcement and eventually retired as a Tillamook County Sheriff’s Deputy and moved to La Pine, OR. In March of 1985 he married the love of his life, Helen R. Beisley. He was a stepfather to Yvonne Meilink and husband Jerry and Kim Strang and husband Jeff whom he loved and treated like his very own. Tom is survived by brother Fred Wyland, his wife Connie Wyland, their 2 children CJ and Robin as well as cousins Ben sharp, Sue Hooper-Koth and sister-in-law Wyvonne Beisley. Grandchildren include Bianca Johnson, JT, Sara, Matt, Dustin Strang and great grandson Keean Vogel. Tom was preceded in death by his sister Becky Terry. Tom will be laid to rest next to his wife Helen at the La Pine Community Cemetery. No funeral per Tom’s wishes. Will have a celebration of life at a later time to be announced.

n the early morning of Tuesday, February 1, 2022, our loving mother, Delores Eisen, passed away at the age of 86. Delores was born on December 10, 1935 in Portland, Oregon to Orval and Yuma Marks. She had one brother, Neil Marks. Delores grew up in Portland and graduated from Franklin High School in 1954. She married and had three daughters. She worked for J.K. Gills and Norm and the next Pantry date is February 25th from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Please know they are under current Covid restraints, there is a limit to how many people can be in the building at one time. Also, when several people show up at once, it may take a little time to ensure everyone has an opportunity, and there may be a wait. We apologize for any delay you may have experienced. We are truly trying to serve the community. I can remember Teresa Freeman coming into the Post Office to tell me what she was up to with her Spring Cleaning which used to inspire me to get something done. I started mine recently but not on purpose. We needed to replace a blind in the laundry area which involved moving out the washer and dryer on each side of the sink. After

She is preceded in death by her parents, Orval and Yuma Marks; brother, Neil Marks; and son, Michael Eisen. My husband looked up the serial number and it was manufactured in 1966. Wow, they sure don’t make them like they used to! f you are like me, you don’t want to entirely give up on gardening once the outside season ends. Which is why I have a few houseplants that I can tinker with over the winter months to keep up my gardening skills. Most of them are the tender succulents I brought inside to keep them out of the cold. But I do have a couple of rex begonias, orchids, and an African violet as well. Then I got a photo from our friend Caleb in Colorado of a terrarium he had built. “Hmmm…” thought I. “That might be fun to do.” First, and most important, is the container selection. Glass is prettier than plastic to my mind, but either will do as long as light is able to reach the plants. One with a wide opening will make placing the ingredients easier. The shape doesn’t really matter; tall thin ones or short, squat ones will do. Containers with lids will create a moist and tropical habitat, but open ones will work better for succulents. Aquariums, goldfish bowls, mason jars and even a large brandy sniffer or a footed trifle bowl will all work for an open terrarium. Look at local thrift shops for all sorts of possibilities in a wide range of prices. Closed terrariums can have issues with conden-

sation and fungal diseases but that isn’t an issue with opentopped ones. Next is plant selection. If you want to do a closed terrarium, you will need plants that do well in moist conditions like ferns and baby tears (Soleirolia soleirolii). Succulents, as mentioned above, will want an open terrarium that can dry out between watering. Look for slow-growing, miniature plants at garden centers or nurseries. A selection of leaf shapes and colors will make the terrarium more interesting, although I have seen some spectacular ones with a single, statement plant. Only get enough plants to fill the center of your container without touching the sides. To be safe, you might want to take your container with you while plant shopping. Alternatively, measure your container and take a photo on your phone so nursery staff can better assist
you. Don’t forget the adage “Thriller, spiller, filler” when choosing your plants. To start the assembly, you will need to build up a drainage layer with gravel or crushed stone since there is no drainage in your container. A two-inch layer will do unless you have a tall container in which case a deeper layer of stones will be needed. Next, using a large spoon or trowel, add a ½ inch layer of activated or horticultural charcoal, which is charcoal that has been treated with oxygen at very high temperatures to make it more porous and absorbent. Along with helping with drainage, charcoal helps control any odors. You will need the nursery-grade, not the very fine power used in medicine. Most good nurseries and garden centers will carry these. A twelve-ounce bag should cost around $12 or $14. After the charcoal layer comes a layer of sheet moss. This divides the potting soil from the drainage layers and looks nice as well. On top of the moss, use your large spoon or trowel and add a layer of slightly moistened, sterile potting soil. (NOT garden soil!) You don’t need the soil with extra fertilizer in it as the terrarium plants won’t need it. Add as much soil as
possible – at least a couple of inches - but keep in mind you still have to add the plant and don’t want them touching the top of the closed terrarium. Before you add the plants, set them outside the container and figure out your arrangement. If the terrarium is to be in the center of a table, it will need interest all the way around. If it is to be placed on a table in a corner, concentrate on making it look good from one or two angles. I find the lazy susan I used with my bonsai helps because you can spin it around without disturbing the container. Once you have your design figured out, remove the plants from their nursery pots and shake off the loose the soil around them. If they are rootbound, gently tease the roots apart or use a pair of small scissors to cut the longer roots. Root pruning, as it is called, helps to slow the growth of the plant, too. Useful in a confined space like a terrarium. You can also trim off any yellowing or damaged leaves. Use your fingers or a spoon to dig holes in the potting soil – or even chopsticks if you have a small opening – and place the plants where you want them. Pat or tamp down the soil around the plants to remove air pockets and secure

plants.) Wipe the sides with a paper towel or newspaper. Place in filtered light but keep a watch on the terrarium to make sure the condensation isn’t too heavy. Leaving the lid off for a few days will usually solve that. Enjoy!

The Crisis Peer Support Specialist draws on their own personal experiences to motivate and assist clients with health challenges to act on their own behalf and to support their own self-directed recovery. This is a full-time position with competitive salary and benefits. Hours generally are 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Required: Diploma/GED.
