A Portland artist is helping transform the former Hazen Hardware Store in Clatskanie into an art gallery. As part of the Portland2016 Biennial of Contemporary Art, artist Heidi Schwegler is displaying her work at the former hardware store on Nehalem Street. The Biennial is a project that was launched in 1949 by the Portland Art Museum to give exposure to area artists. The project ended in 2006 but was restarted in 2010 by the nonprofit Disjecta Contemporary Art Center in Portland. This year, Internationally renowned artist-curator Michelle Grabner selected 34 artists and artist-teams to exhibit at wide-ranging venues from Ashland and Clatskanie to Madras and La Grande between July 9 and September 18. Mirroring the geographic span of the artists — 13 are from outside Portland — Disjecta’s Biennial will engage sites across Oregon, making the project accessible to larger and more diverse audiences, while also encouraging visitors to travel between and explore host communities, according to Disjecta Executive Director Bryan Suerefh. “This is the first year we are taking it statewide,” Suereth said. “All of Oregon should be able to experience it. It is just customer service. It is just celebrating the unique culturals and landscapes that make up Oregon.” Suerefh said he accidentally discovered the Hazen Hardware Store on his way back to Portland following a visit to Astoria “I just happen to stop for lunch

New playground takes shape at Clatskanie Elementary BY JEREMY C. RUARK jruark@countrymedia.net

A $260,000 improvement project is in the works at Clatskanie Elementary School. The work involves redoing and expanding the current playground area behind the school at 815 S. Nehalem Street. “We just ran out of space,” Clatskanie School Superintendent Dr. Lloyd Hartley said. “And the old plastic play structure was ready to come down.” The other driving force included the school staff’s ability to keep a close watch on the children in the playground. Hartley said the idea was to redefine the playground area. “The upper part of the playground its turning into a more imagine play area, a cooperative area and an area for games,” Hartley said. “Down below the school we’ll have all new swings, slides, some huts, a small rock climbing wall and other areas for the kids to play.” Planning for the new playground was launched about two years ago. School administrators hired a play-

ground designer to help engage the community in the project. “We were able to get community members and parents, but most importantly the kids, to come in and see what playgrounds could look like,” he said. “They even used art materials to construction what their ideal playground would be.” Hartley said the actual plans for the new playground were developed

from the public comments taken at the planning sessions and the children’s designs. “We wanted to make sure that it would be a playground they wanted and they had the buy-in to it, but also we had an auction that raised some money for this with the parents contributing upwards of
