Rainier man charged with attempted murder A Rainier man was arrested on charges of attempted murder and assault after he beat his girlfriend, requiring her to go to the hospital. Anthony Lewis Sanson, 24, was arrested May 2 when police from Rainier and Clatskanie responded to a call about a domestic disturbance. According to the arrest warrant, Sanson beat his girlfriend with his fist, elbow and steel toed boots causing serious damage to her head and face. Witnesses said they heard screaming and yelling coming from the apartment Sanson shared with his girlfriend for approximately 90 minutes. Deputies investigating the disturbance said they found Sanson lying on the ground outside, apparently intoxicated. Sanson is lodged in the Columbia County jail with bail set at $19,000.

A fire reported at Clatskanie Middle/High School on May 13 was extinguished and students were evacuated from the building. Clatskanie Rural Fire Protection District responded to scene along with Clatskanie Police Department. The source of the fire was reported to

be an upstairs restroom trashcan, which caused a significant amount smoke to be created and led to a school closure. Students were dismissed to walk or wait for a bus.

Results from the Oregon Primary Election Preliminary results for the Oregon Primary Election have been calculated. Here are the first results in races that pertain to Columbia County. With 100 percent of precincts reporting and 15,615 ballots accounted for, Columbia County Elections Department calculated a 51 percent voter turnout so far. Democrats saw a higher voter registration and turnout in the county, casting nearly 50 percent of the total votes. Republican turnout was around 35 percent. For Columbia County Com-

missioner, Position 1, Margaret Magruder is at the top with 28 percent of 13,846 counted votes. Wayne Mayo was a close second with 27 percent, trailing by fewer than 200 votes. Joel Yarbor earned 19 percent, Susan Conn 12 percent, and Brady Preheim 11 percent. In the race for Position 3 on the commission, Alex Tardiff stands to make an upset with 51.43 percent to incumbent Tony Hyde’s 47.97 percent of 12,863 counted votes. Measure 5-254, an operating

levy for Scappoose Fire District, passed with a 55 percent vote in-favor of continued funding. Measure 5-253, a levy to fund Vernonia Fire District with a training captain, was passed with 51 percent of votes. The public transportation initiative to create a special district for Columbia County Rider was defeated, picking up just 36 percent “yes” votes. In the presidential race at the county level, Bernie Sanders beat Hillary Clinton with 56 percent of the Democrat vote. For

Republicans, Donald Trump had 65 percent of the vote. Ted Cruz received around 18 percent and John Kasich picked up around 12 percent in the early results. Sen. Ron Wyden had 80 percent of counted votes for US Senator from his party, and Mark Callahan led Republicans at 46 percent. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici holds 86 percent against Shabba Woodley in the race for 1st District US Representative. On the other side of that race, Brian Heinrich leads with 47 percent, Jonathan Burgess picked up 26

percent, and Delinda Morgan holds 23 percent. Rep. Brad Witt took 98 percent of the Democrat vote for 31st District State Representative in an unopposed race. Governor Kate Brown earned 75 percent of her party’s vote to remain in the position. Bud Pierce and Allen Alley led the pack of Republican candidates for governor, respectively getting 44 percent and 31 percent of calculated votes.

An ATM break-in attempt in the wee hours left Wauna Credit union officials looking for answers Thursday morning, teaming up with local law enforcement and the credit union’s private security. “It’s really early – we’ll be doing a full investigation,” said Debi Smiley, Wauna’s Chief Operations Officer and Security Officer. “We were called at 6:40 this morning. We’ll use whatever tools

and resources we have – we have our security company involved and of course the local police department. “There was a torch used, so there may have been sparks from that seen. If anyone saw that kind of activity and had a timeframe and could report that, please call. They can contact me at my office at (503) 728-6116 or report information to the police department.
