Welcome to Cavalier Founded on July 1, 1875 along the winding banks of the Tongue River, Cavalier is a growing community of 1,300. Cavalier is the county seat for Pembina County and is home to the Pembina County Courthouse, which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Sites. Cavalier is the regional hub for services. 19th Annual Cavalier Motorcycle Ride-In to be held June 19-21 What is that sound? Soon that will be the sound of hundreds of motorcycles riding in to Cavalier! It is time for the 19th Annual Cavalier Motorcycle Ride-In! Held every Father’s Day weekend, the event will be kicking off Friday, June 19 and will rock all weekend long until Sunday morning. This is one action packed weekend in Cavalier! During the 19 years that this event has been happening it has often been referred to as the “Little Sturgis of the North”. It is amazing when a small town fills up with bikers from all over the U.S. and Canada. There will be motorcycle games, contests, two great bands, shopping, food, and so much more! “What makes us most proud of our event is the unique aspect that our event offers something for everyone. We guarantee that anyone from the hard core biker to the local residents can come and have fun with so much to see and do throughout this day,” comments Nancy Jenson, Ride-In Committee Director, about what sets the Cavalier Motorcycle Ride-In apart from other motorcycle ride-ins. Cavalier has truly become the premier biker event in northern North Dakota, and 2015 is the year you will definitely want to come to town early and join the fun. Friday is going to kick off with a bang! Last year was the first year we started the “Scavenger Hunt Fun Run,” and it was a HUGE hit! This year we have several new locations and routes planned to show you the beautiful Rendezvous Region. Stop by our registration stand on Main Street starting at 10 a.m. to get a map and all of the details. The map includes a list of the locations where you will be challenged with finding different memorabilia items we’ve hidden at each spot. You can do this run at your leisure throughout the afternoon. With every stop, you have the chance at

winning more prizes that evening. Be back to town by 8 p.m. for a chance to win a prize! Registration for this event is FREE! We are happy to announce that our vendors will be up and running in downtown Cavalier on Friday evening. Grab a bite to eat, do some shopping, and stick around because we will be featuring the band “Ciro & Topher Show” (FREE!!) in the NAPA parking lot from 8 p.m. – midnight! Cavalier Motorcycle Ride-In’s biggest day is undoubtedly Saturday, June 20! Registration for our annual Fun Run starts right away at 8:30 a.m. It is a $10 donation to ride with the pack, and you will receive a CMRI bandana. The proceeds from this year’s Fun Run will be going toward Wounded Warriors Guide Service. This is an organization that provides services to North Dakota and Minnesota Veterans to help with rehabilitation by providing fishing and hunting trips, mountain biking, etc. The Fun Run trek starts in Cavalier at 10:30 a.m. and brings riders through the beautiful Rendezvous Region with two great stops. The riders will be back to Cavalier around 1:30 p.m. with the motorcycle games and contests starting at 2 p.m. There will be a live DJ rocking out on Main Street Cavalier all afternoon for everyone to enjoy. This adds great excitement once our games and contests get up and running. The live auction for some great motorcycle items and our collectable Ride-In banners will be held at 4 p.m. These events are completely FREE to the public and are fun for everyone – no matter what your age! You can also walk around town and check out the variety of food and merchandise vendors, along with the many great local shops Cavalier has to offer. The fun does not slow down as we head in to Saturday evening. What might be one of the most exciting

parts of the entire weekend is when one lucky person’s name is going to be drawn from the raffle ticket sales for a brand new 2015 “Indian Chieftain” motorcycle! This big event will be happening at 5:00 p.m. A portion of the proceeds for the raffle go to local charities and the event each year. Buy your tickets early at local Cavalier retailers or the day of the event at the registration stand. The motorcycle burnouts, a crowd favorite, will follow. Let loose and fill the street with smoke up on our custom built burnout stand. Every year proves to be a great battle in front of thousands of people cheering from the street. At 8 p.m. the renowned band “REDLINE” will take the stage. Rock out with this amazing band until midnight in the NAPA parking lot downtown Cavalier! Sunday morning, head over to the Cavalier Fire Department for a Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser to fill your belly up before you hit the road and leave town. (Open to all!). This will be held from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. The Cavalier Motorcycle Ride-In Committee loves to see all the familiar faces and many new ones each year this event is held. Recreation and history at Icelandic State Park in Cavalier Located on the north shore of Lake Renwick, Icelandic State Park offers visitors not only a wide array of recreational opportunities, but also glimpses of North Dakota’s homesteading heritage and its natural beauty. Boating, swimming and fishing for northern pike and other game fish are popular activities. Picnic areas enable visitors to enjoy a relaxing afternoon in the shade of old oak trees, while the campgrounds offer full amenities, including electrical hookups, modern comfort stations with showers and sewage dump station. Three sleeping cabins are also available from mid-May through the end of September. Heritage Center Within the park are the Pioneer Heritage Center and restored historic buildings. Also found here is the Gunlogson Homestead and Nature Preserve. This early homestead preserves the state’s pioneer spirit, while the 200-acre natural wooded area along the Tongue River is a sanctuary for plants, birds and wild-

life. Events that are taking place at the park this summer are: Saturday - June 6 - National Trails Day – Guided hikes in the morning, afternoon and night (at dusk). T-shirts and other door prizes at each hike! Sunday - June 7 - Natural History Expansion Ribbon Cutting Ceremony – Starting at 2 p.m., there will be an unveiling of the new permanent exhibits in the Pioneer Heritage Center. There will be a presentation and refreshments arranged by the Northeastern North Dakota Heritage Association (NENDHA). Saturday - June 13 - Saturday Night at the Hall – This year’s theme is Pottery and Piano. We will feature a pottery class taught by Warren Jensen starting at 4 p.m. ending with some tunes played by pianist, Brent Hermans. This is our annual membership drive so come see what we are all about! Entertainment and refreshments are arranged by the Northeastern North Dakota Heritage Association (NENDHA).

Thursday - August 13 Cruise Night with the Valley Cruisers – Meet at the picnic shelter in the campground at 6:30 p.m. to view a collection of classic & new cars showcased by the Valley Cruisers. Sunday - September 13 - Pioneer Machinery Show - Machinery parade, threshing, tractor pull, kids peddle pull, entertainment, displays, and breakfast. All located at the Pioneer Machinery Site starting at 7 a.m. (Across the road from Icelandic State Park.) Sunday - Nov. 22 - Christmas Open House – The Pioneer Heritage Center will be decorated with trees, lights, and a variety of Christmas displays. The Christmas program will be from 1-5 p.m. with refreshments, entertainment, and holiday cheer!

Natural History expansion complete

The Northeastern North Dakota Heritage Association is excited to announce that the fundraising and planning over the past six years to expand the visitor center will pay off near the end of this month! Split Rock Studios will soon finish installing state-of-the-art interpretive exhibits inviting visitors to explore the natural history and geologic features of the Rendezvous Region. This expansion took six years of fundraising, one year of design planning, and $265,000 to complete. The expansion will feature topics such as tallgrass and mixed-grass prairies, wetlands, and riparian woodland habitats. There are also additions made to the bird porch and the “Future” area

which will keep visitors informed on events being planned through the NENDHA. These exhibits will be added to the permanent settlement era pioneer exhibits (1870-1920) that already exist in the main portion of the center. There is an open invitation to the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Sunday, June 7 at 2:00 p.m. The Association would like to celebrate the completion of this project and give recognition to our generous donors. If you can’t make the opening, the Pioneer Heritage Center will be open from mid-May to mid-August from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Make sure to make the Pioneer Heritage Center a destination this summer.

Pembina County Historical Society open The Pembina County Historical Museum Grounds, located 5 ½ miles west of Cavalier, have changed in the past year. New to the grounds are the enhancements to the Veterans’ Memorial, the new exhibit building, and the new shop. Standing at the entrance to the Veterans’ Memorial are two life size statues of military men era World War II. This enhancement to the memorial area encourages museum visitors to pay respects at the memorial or just to sit and reflect for a time. The statues were purchased entirely with donated funds as was the memorial when it was installed in 2006. The patio area was funded, in part, from the North Dakota Community Foundation and the Cavalier Community Foundation. Landscaping will be added. The Museum Research Library includes information of military service of Pembina County residents and more including photos, news articles, and other recorded material. A new exhibit building for farm machinery was completed last fall with funds from the Ben Simons Estate. Electrical work and asphalt flooring are being added. This new space allows for the placement of items in

displays by type of item in all four of the machinery exhibit buildings. The new shop is being fitted for the volunteer and staff handymen. It provides a heated area for working on projects year round plus storage for maintenance vehicles. This building was also completed with funds from the Ben Simons Estate. Changes are always taking place on the museum grounds. Take time this summer to stroll the grounds stopping to visit the Victory Garden, the pink garden in honor of women, the wind mill pumping water, and sit a spell on the Bathgate Depot deck. The Pembina County Historical Museum Grounds are owned and operated by the Pembina County Historical Society and is located 5 ½ miles west of Cavalier. Monthly PCHS meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m.; $10 memberships can be purchased at the Museum. Welcome to Langdon, gateway to the Rendezvous Region The Langdon Area Chamber of Commerce (LACC) is pleased to announce our fun-filled and actionpacked summer of 2015 events. June begins on a “jazzy” note; the LAHS Jazz Bands will be performing outside at Boyd Block on Thursday, June 4. The ever popular Citywide Rummage Sales are back. The dates for this treasure hunt are June 5-6. The Cavalier County Republican is your source for addresses and a map of these sales. Good luck finding hidden treasures! Cavalier County Health District, in conjunction with the Progressive Agriculture Foundation, will be holding the 8th Annual Cavalier County Progressive Agriculture Youth Safety Day on Thursday, June 24 from 12:30-3:45 p.m. at the NDSU Langdon Research Extension Center. This event is geared toward students entering grades 2-6 in the 2015/2016 school year. As the Show & Shine wraps up, the LACC and the Eagles Auxiliary will be co-sponsoring a Pork Roast Feed from 5-8 p.m. (June 27) at the Langdon Eagles Club. I know that’s a lot for one day, but I’m not done yet. Sporty’s Bar along with the Langdon Eagles Club will be hosting a street dance on Saturday, June 27. The “Downtown Horns” will be entertaining us that night right here in “downtown” Langdon at Boyd Block from 9 p.m.-1 a.m. Bring your lawn chairs and get comfortable because The Sneaky Wild Oats will be entertaining the com-

munity on July 9 from 7-9 p.m. at Boyd Block Stage. Wow, what a fun day Langdon has in store for all of us on Thursday, July 16. The day starts with Field Days. The NDSU Langdon Research Extension Center (LREC), in conjunction with the Northern Canola Growers Association (NCGA), will be hosting this event. Come out and see the wonderful work the LREC and the NCGA do and enjoy some fabulous speakers and educators. You will also get a chance to tour the brand new Agronomy Lab. When you are finished at the LREC and done golfing with the NCGA, it will be time to attend the Cavalier County Memorial Hospital Foundation’s (CCMHF) Annual Picnic in the evening. This picnic is sure

to satisfy your hunger on July 16th. NLAC and the Missoula Children’s Theater proudly present the production of “Rapunzel” on Friday July 17 (7 p.m.) and Saturday July 18 (3 p.m.) at the Langdon Area High School. The weekend of July 24-25 is our 20th Annual “Music Fest” weekend, and it’s a BIG one. It promises to be a fun-filled couple days in Langdon. There will be something for everyone. Let’s start by telling you that the Eagles Auxiliary Luncheon is Friday (July 24) serving from 11 a.m. -2 p.m. The Firemen’s 32nd Annual Dinner will again be held this weekend. This tradition will be held on Friday, July 24 and will take place at the Activity Center here in Langdon. Come enjoy some really awesome food and support our firemen at the same time. When you are finished enjoying your meal come downtown and enjoy the start of the Rendezvous Region Rod Run (RRRR); it’s back on Music Fest weekend and “revving” up for another fun run of a weekend (July 24-25). Friday evening (July 25) you will be treated to Muffler Rap/Loudest Pipes, burn-

D & B annual Show and Shine Car Show set for June 27

The annual Show and Shine car show sponsored by D & B Motors of Langdon will be mixing it up this year with changes in location, day, and cars allowed. The time of the week is one notable change from previous years. Normally held during the week, the show will instead take place on Saturday, June 27 from 2-5 p.m.

The car show is the same evening as the Pig Roast co-sponsored by the Langdon Area Chamber of Commerce and Eagles Auxiliary at the Eagles. Later that same evening, a street dance co-sponsored by Sporty’s and the Eagles, will take place making Langdon a happening place on Saturday, June 27. “We are hoping people come for the car show and stay for an evening of fun,” Jennifer Busse, Sales

In years past the show was held at the D & B Motors dealership but will now be held on Main Street of Langdon. “We would like more room for our participants and would also like to draw people downtown Langdon. Our main street has grown so much. It’s fun to show it off so people can see what Langdon has to offer,” Busse said. For the past 3 years D&B has held the show at their dealership, having around 50 cars entered each year. In addition to the changes of date and location, another fun change is the expansion of the car show beyond the trademark Corvettes and Camaros. D&B has opened the car show to any and all Chevrolet models. “We would like to see more people be able to participate so we thought this would be a great year to do so since we will have more

room on Main Street,” Busse stated. D&B will also be sponsoring a movie and hope to be able to show the cult classic “American Graffiti” at the Roxy during the car show. “People will be able to pop in and out of the Roxy to watch part or all of a movie,” Busse said. The money raised at the car Show will once again be going to the Langdon Day Care Center. If you have a Chevy and want to show it off at the D&B Show and Shine but don’t know where to stay that weekend, D&B has a block of rooms available to participants at the Cobblestone Inn of Langdon. Registration for the show is $20, and participants have the choice of pre-registering or registering the day of when arriving at the car show. The event is a fundraising effort on behalf of Boyd Block Plaza and funds raised will use to purchase picnic tables for the venue. Local businesses will also be getting into the music as they participate in sidewalk sales and the street fair. Businesses such as Quality Specialty Products and Printing, Langdon Community Drug, Langdon’s General Store, Langdon Floral, Sew On & Sew North and many more, according to Mehlhoff, will be participating. “We do street fairs cause some home-based business like to participate. If anybody wants to set up they can contact me,” Mehlhoff said. Food vendors will also be on location with Mexican Munchies and Phillips Catering offering good food to go with the good times to be had during the day.

Rhubarb lovers take note, Rhubarb Fest will take place from 1-3 p.m. in the back of the Eagles. The event is sponsored by the United Lutheran Youth Groups as a fundraiser. A favorite of North Dakota, the Johnny Holm Band will be the spotlight entertainment this year with the show beginning at 9 p.m. and going until 12:30 a.m. Advance wristbands are $17 for ages 12 & up. Northern Lights Arts Council provides summer activities for all Northern Lights Arts Council has summer events that should please all ages. Two family friendly musical events will be at Boyd Plaza. The Langdon Area High School Jazz Band will be performing Thursday, June 4 at 7 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs and bug spray. We’re hoping for a beautiful evening. Last year the wind came up during the concert so musicians had to scramble to keep their music in place. If the weather is bad, the concert will be at the ROXY. A free will donation will be given to the high school music department. On Thursday, July 9 Sneaky Wild Oats will perform. This group from

Grafton performs jazz standards. This performance also begins at 7 p.m. and will be moved to the ROXY if the weather presents problems. A free will donation will be taken to help defer expenses. We will again be holding two art day camps in the county. Dan Ludvigson will be teaching in Munich on July 7 and 9. Students in grades K-2 will work with handmade paper mache’ to create small whimsical animals known as Alebrije. Students in grades 3 and 4 will explore the colorful collage creations of Henry Matisse and then create their own collages. Grades five to eight

Langdon Art Day Camp is scheduled for July 22 and 23. These students will be doing painting on canvas. Grades two and three will do painted silhouettes, grades four to six will do painted landscape on canvas, and grades seven to twelve will do painting in the style of Van Gogh. Cost is $15. This year’s production is “Rapunzel”. The production will be at the Langdon Area High School Gym with the action on the stage. Two year’s ago we moved from the Elementary School. Last year we used the high school stage, which worked well. I was afraid small

voices wouldn’t carry, but it worked better than the elementary school and the summer temperature in the high school gym is much more comfortable. Auditions for “Rapunzel” are Monday, July 13 at 9 a.m. Traditionally, parts are cast by 11 a.m. Some actors will be asked to stay for a Monday afternoon rehearsal, but other actors begin rehearsal on Tuesday. Rehearsals are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughout the week. Don’t schedule swimming lessons that week. The productions will be Friday, July 17 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, July 18 at 2 p.m. The Free Movie in the park will Thursday, August 6 at 9 p.m. Bring blankets, lawn chairs and bug spray. The movie title will be announced later in the summer. Make room on your calendars for the above events and don’t forget Frost Fire’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which runs June 27 through July 29.

Frost Fire presents Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

By Melissa Anderson Republican Editor Are you prepared to follow the inspiring adventure of Joseph and his amazing technicolor dreamcoat? The Frost Fire Theater invites you to enjoy the biblical story of Joseph as he endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. Set to a vibrant assemblage of musical styles including countrywestern, pop, and rock’n’roll, this Old Testament story emerges as a tale that a person of any age can enjoy. “Audiences of all ages will enjoy this high energy and delightful production. The story is timeless and universal,” Heather Williams, who will be directing and acting in the production this year stated. “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” was one of the first large productions produced at Frost Fire in the summer 1987. Richard and Judith Johnson, the

producers, made a perfect choice in once again producing the musical. There are nineteen cast members, many new faces and a few familiar. The cast members vary from recent high school graduates to college students and a few university theatre professors. Of note, Darin Kerr will be spending his nineteenth season at Frost Fire playing the role of Jacob. Luke Hoplin, another familiar face, will play the title role of Joseph and serve as musical director. Jordan Thornberg, of Walhalla, will play one of Joseph’s brothers. This is his fifth consecutive season at Frost Fire. Audiences may remember his performances in “Big River”, “The Music Man”, and last season’s “Smokey Joe’s Café” where he rocked the house with his rendition of “Jail House Rock.” Director Heather Williams is an assistant professor of theatre and dance at Winona State University (WSU) in Winona, Minn. Williams

holds a BFA in Acting and a MA in Theatre from the University of North Dakota, as well as a PhD from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. “I teach the acting core classes at WSU and direct/coach/act in the productions at Winona State,” Williams said. Some directing credits of William’s includ: “Crimes of the Heart,” “Bye, Bye, Birdie,” and “Little Shop of Horrors.” An actress in her own right, some of William’s favorite roles include Amanda in “The Glass Menagerie,” Drowsy in “The Drowsy Chaperone,” and most recently Violet in “August: Osage County.” “I enjoy all rehearsal processes, the ensemble of actors, directors, stage managers, producers and crew makes it all worth while,” Williams said. This isn’t William’s first time at Frost Fire as she performed at the theater in 1993 in “Me and My Girl” while she was an undergraduate student at the University of North

Dakota. Twenty years later, Williams returned to Frost Fire to play Eulalie Shinn in “The Music Man” in 2013. Williams most recent performance was in the 2014 production of “Smokey Joe’s Café”. She will not only be directing “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” but performing in it as well this summer. “I love the atmosphere of the Frost Fire stage and being surrounded by the magical beauty of the Pembina Gorge. It is truly an unique experience for actors and audiences alike,” Williams stated. Performances will take place on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays beginning June 27. Matinees will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesdays and Sundays with evening performances at 6 p.m. on Saturdays. Tickets are $12 for children and $28 for adults. 116th Annual Deuce of August Celebration

The 116th Annual Deuce of August Icelandic Celebration will be held in Mountain on July 31, August 1 and 2. The Deuce of August is the largest Icelandic event in the United States and is verified by the North Dakota Tourism Department as being the oldest ethnic festival in the state of North Dakota. The historical significance of the event traces back to 1874, when on August 2, church services were held throughout Iceland to commemorate the fact that Iceland was receiving a new constitution from Denmark. The Deuce of August is an annual event hosted by the Icelandic Communities Association (ICA). The seven Icelandic settlement communities that make up the ICA are Gardar, Mountain, Hallson, Vidalin, Fjalla, Thingvalla and Svold. The people from these communities and many other supporters from all over the United States are instrumental in the success of the celebration and ICA activities. The goal of the ICA is to celebrate our Icelandic heritage and culture with the main focus being to promote and organize the annual “Deuce of August” Celebration. The three-day event draws nearly a thousand visitors from all over the U.S., Canada, and Iceland. The weekend begins on Friday, July 31st with the American Legion fish fry at 5 p.m., and a street dance from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. This year the band on Friday night is “Yesterdays Habit”. Saturday morning begins with a big parade at 10:30 a.m. The Grand Marshal for the parade is Alfred Byron Sr., and

the Honorary Grand Marshal is Magnus Olafson. You can find out more about the Parade Marshals on our website at www. august2nd.com. After the parade, there are many activities to be enjoyed for all ages throughout the day. The traditional Vikur Salad Luncheon in the basement of Vikur Church is at 11:00 a.m. Other activities will include the Genealogy Center, a Car Show and Shine, a sanctioned Kids Pedal Tractor Pull, and an adult pedal pull. There will also be souvenir sales, Icelandic goodies from the Akra Snack Shack, and the traditional Heritage Program at 2 p.m. in the Community Center. Entertainment at the Heritage Program will include a choir from Iceland. At 6 p.m., there is the traditional Icelandic Communities International Fellowship Dinner in the Mountain Community Center. The traditional Old Time Dance will be at the American Legion Hall from 5-9 p.m., and there will be a big street dance from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. with music by “32 Below”. Fireworks are generally lit off at 10:30 p.m. As you can see, the event is quite full on Saturday, but it doesn’t end there. Pembina Gorge Fossil Dig set for July 20-26

An interactive learning experience that allows children to dig in the dirt is a great way to spend a day, and families will have that chance when the North Dakota Geological Survey (NDGS), the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department (NDPR), and Walhalla Economic Development host the annual Fossil Dig at the Pembina Gorge this summer. “We will be returning once again to the beautifully scenic Pembina Gorge in our ongoing search for sear monsters,”the NDGS said in a statement. The Pierre Formation, located in Pembina Gorge, is 80 million years old and holds some of the oldest surface rocks in North Dakota. Within these rocks some amazing prehistoric creatures can be found such as squid, sea turtles, Xiphactinus and Enchodus fish, Hesperornis birds, and the best find is a partial mosasuar or giant sea lizard in common lingo. The mosasuar has been mostly uncovered, a majority of which the NDGS team has found in parts and pieces. Imagine creatures dying in the prehistoric ocean, sinking down, being eaten or disturbed on its descent. A lot of the fossils that are found are single elements of vertebrae, jaws, ribs, etc. The three paleontologists on staff, Clint Boyd the Paleo manager, Jeff Person the collections manager, and Becky Barnes who is the lab manager, are part of the North Dakota Geological Survey and will be

on location to help those amateur paleontologists. “We are housed at the Heritage Center because this is also where the State Fossil Collection is housed,” Barnes stated. The fossils recovered from the Pembina Gorge dig are initially taken back to the Paleontology department, which is based in the Heritage Center in Bismarck. “Each fossil is cleaned and sorted in the Johnsrud Paleontology Laboratory before either being placed in the State Fossil Collection for storage and for future research, or placed on exhibit,” Barnes explained. S o m e of the fossils found end up on display at the Heritage Center, Icelandic State Park, Pembina County Museum, or other museums within the state. Public Fossil Digs are very important to the NDGS as these are a vital means for education and outreach to not only North Dakota residents but adventurers from other states and countries as well. “Getting people excited about what they can find in their home state or showing people from outof-state what awesome things we have, is important. Digs, museum exhibits and displays, talks, fossil preparation, and preserving our history is all part of what the Paleo crew do,” Barnes stated.

The NDGS try to open the public digs to as many people and ages as possible, but for the safety of both participants and the fossils, the NDGS does have a minimum age of 12 for the majority of the dig. Families with amateur paleontologists younger than 12, don’t be to disheartened, the NDGS does have a few days where exceptions are allowed. “We have a few “family days” on the Pembina dig where the minimum is 10,” Barnes said. There is no upper age limit for at-

tending the public dig, but each dig location is different, requiring different amounts of physical activity. The NDGS advises those interested to be aware of the location and the physical requirements each dig may need in order to fully participate. “If a person is physically fit and active, then something with a bit of hiking and climbing such as Marmarth or Whiskey Creek might be what they’re looking for. If a person wants to dig, but doesn’t think they can handle a lot of hiking, then Medora or Pembina is geared more towards that,” Barnes explained. For the Pembina dig some helpful information is that this is a fairly

low stress dig, meaning that participants will be driven nearly all the way to the site, with a short walk up a slight incline being the only real hurdle. At the Pembina dig site some things that participants will need include hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, loads of enthusiasm and, of course, a camera to capture that epic find. Cost per day is $90 for ages 12 and up. The fee includes breakfast, lunch, snack, transportation to and from the dig site and a souvenir. A full day is from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. These days are Monday, July 20 through Friday, July 24. Family days for those 10 and up participants who must accompanied by an adult are full days, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, July 26. Cost for a full family day depends on how many attend. For two it’s $110, for three it’s $165, and for a family of four it’s $220. A half family day in the morning from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or in the afternoon from 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. includes either breakfast or lunch, transportation to and from the dig site and souvenir. Costs for a family half day in either the morning or afternoon are for family of two $55, family of three $85, and for a family of four $110. while sitting in the desks. Inevitably one will become the teacher and recess happens. The school has pictures of many graduating classes of area schools. The traditional hanging globe and pulldown map rack bring many back to their childhood. The DeVold building is where the museum events are located. The main street of the DeVold building is home to Langdon’s first jail, a general store, a military room and a blacksmith shop, to name a few. With seating capacity of about 150 people and a full kitchen, this may be just the place to hold your reunion, birthday party or other events. The other school house houses our library in which there are county newspapers going back over 100 years. At one time there were at least 25 newspapers published in Cavalier County. The Milton Globe and the Cavalier County Republican are on hand in the library. Many love to research in the solitude of the library. Family histories, town histories, scrapbooks and obituaries are just a few of the other items in the library. The Memorial building is home to a fully furnished log cabin home, a stocked cook car and lots of various farm and home equipment. You will find only one restored tractor here, but you will also find several buggies, a covered wagon and horse drawn sleds

that carried children to school in the harsh winters of North Dakota. The railroad is credited with building many of the small towns that are featured at the museum, but that doesn’t matter to the children, they just love the caboose. They love to climb the ladder and sit in the high seats inside, looking out the windows. The caboose was donated by Burlington Northern and was brought to Dresden by rail which is no longer there. Emma Hahn’s house is the most recent addition to the museum. Many of Emma’s personal items are in the house. Emma was a school teacher, Dresden’s last postmaster, and she wrote two books about Dresden, which are for sale in the DeVold building.
