New Exhibition Opening at White Bird Gallery

Christopher Mathie’s mixed media paintings are filled with energetic movement, fluid emotion, and bold confident brushwork. Mathie is a Washington artist who is well known for his dynamic abstractions that reference coastal landscapes, in a warm style that is the result of trusting personal artistic mark making. In his process, Mathie builds up layer upon layer of textural paint achieving complicated coloration and lively inviting surfaces. For this new exhibition, he will be unveiling a collection of work focused on figuration, with themes of humans, animals and birds as subjects, in addition to his signature expressive seascapes.

“There’s a strong connection between how I’ve been painting seascapes and the brand new figures for this show. When I’m making abstractions inside the figure I think about how water and atmosphere move...which is like how I imagine our emotions move within us.”

Jeffrey Hull Gallery offers new originals and prints

Jeffrey Hull started painting in his teens, but focused on watercolors over 50 years ago and never looked back. His command of painting and love for the Pacific Northwest Coast places the viewer right into scenes of sandy beaches, wind-sculpted trees and dramatic cliffs draped in coastal mist. For 37 years, Jeff and his wife Carol have offered his paintings of the beautiful coast in their spacious second-floor gallery at Sandpiper Square in the heart of downtown Cannon Beach. Looking back fondly, Hull remembers ‘we were just kids’, when he speaks of opening the tiny 350-square foot space back in 1987. Over time, both the gallery and Jeff’s paintings have grown; he’s added oils to his repertoire; and he also now proudly produces his own high-quality reproductions. If you haven’t been to the gallery (or haven’t been lately), stop by during the festival to enjoy the Hulls’ warm hospitality and see new originals and prints by this gifted artist.

Explore Sesame and Lilies and view latest artwork

The Sesame and Lilies Upstairs Art Gallery, located on the second floor of the Cannon Beach Mall, features paintings by Diane Speakman and her daughter, Rachel Speakman. Both artists work in oil on canvas and hardboard. Their work often overlaps, as they

frequently work together on paintings.

Diane specializes in landscapes, still-lives, and animal portraits. The use of a moderate palette to render the soft hues of the northwest coast gives Diane’s work an impressionistic feel, which mixes seamlessly with the cu-

rated spaces of Sesame and Lilies. Her interest in the works of the old masters, impressionism, and plein-air painting drive her stylistic choices.

Rachel’s work focuses on animal forms, both stylized and illustrative, as well as abstract works. Her work reflects the

influence of a younger generation of artists. She employs her brand of stylized realism in her animal paintings and sculptures, taking an edgier approach in both form and color. She is a graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago.

New works include sea-

scapes of the Oregon and Maine coasts, still-lives, and wildlife portraits.

Diane and Rachel have also been working together on an ongoing bird series. Their art gallery in Gearhart is open Fridays and Saturdays 11-4 pm. You can learn more at speakmanstudios.com.
