Rodeo Court has “Country Roots & Cowboy Boots” BY AMANDA FRINK amandaf@thechronicleonline.com
COLUMBIA COUNTY — When one pictures a rodeo queen, they are likely to visualize a girl with a big hat, a big smile and even bigger hair. While these characteristics are definitely applicable to the three young women that make up the 2014 Columbia County Fair and Rodeo Court, it would be important to note that their titles also require a big heart, as sweat, sunburns and lack of sleep cannot deter them from serving as ambassadors of the county and the sport of rodeo. “Country Roots and Cowboy Boots” is the theme for next week’s 99th annual Columbia County Fair and Rodeo, and Queen Savannah Dreyer and princesses Ashley Lanphear and Baylee Crawford are just some of the folks there that embody the phrase. Dreyer is the daughter of Janice Gonzales and Ryan Dreyer. She and her American Paint Horse, Rocky, have been quite active in the St. Helens High School Equestrian Team, various team and individual rodeo events, Columbia County Rodeo Drill Team and 4-H. Lanphear is the daughter of Jason and Becky Lanphear of Deer Island. She rides Shoni, a 14-year-old Appaloosa buckskin mare See COURT Page A6

St. Helens man injured in fall from cliff St. Helens teen killed in automobile wreck
A St. Helens man was injured July 4 when he fell from a cliff overlooking Grey Cliffs Waterfront Park in St. Helens. Nicholas Dunnington, 23, fell approximately 30 to 40 feet from near the top of the cliff to the rocks below, according to St. Helens Police Chief Terry Moss. Dunnington, and a group of friends, were walking up a trail that leads to a street at the top of the cliff after the fireworks show in Olde Towne. Dunnington slipped in the dark and fell. He landed in an area of broken rock at the base of the cliff. Ron Youngberg of Columbia River Fire and
Rescue characterized his injuries as serious. He was transported to a Portland area hospital. Moss said alcohol consumption was a factor in the accident. “When you add alcohol, it’s a bad combination,” Moss said. “I’m shocked he was not more seriously injured.” Moss said he was not aware of a similar incident in recent history at the park. “I’ve never heard of anything like it,” he said. North River Street runs along the top of the bluff, overlooking marinas and the historic courthouse. There is no fence or railing along the bluff.

COLUMBIA COUNTY — Residents around the county will be seeing changes to area roadways this summer as paving commences on more than 40 county roads, resulting in approximately 100 new patches of asphalt. “This is going to be a very, very busy summer program for us,” said David Hill, director of the Columbia County road department. “We plan to put down 13,000 tons of asphalt in the four districts that we have and it’s relatively evenly split between the districts. In the St. Helens district, we plan to put
A 16-year-old St. Helens youth was killed in a traffic accident early Sunday morning west of Rainier. Oregon State Police investigators said on July 6 at approximately 12:55 a.m., a 1993 Subaru driven by 16-year-old Seeaira D. Hicks was eastbound on Highway 30 near milepost 53. For an unconfirmed reason, the car traveled off the eastbound shoulder and rolled several times before coming to rest on its top. Hicks was killed. A 16-year-old passenger, Scott A. Hamlin,

The Rainier district would be 3,570 ton, Vernonia would be 2,400 ton, and the Clatskanie area about 3,400 ton.” In maintenance district 1 — St. Helens and Scappoose — the county will be patching sections of the following roads: South Canaan, Pittsburg, Columbia (Scappoose), Branch, Meadow, Coal Creek, Alder Creek, Cater, Sykes, Division, Moore and McDermott. Rainier, district 2, will see improvements to Tide Creek, Neer City, Atkins, Laurelwood, Lindberg, Rockcrest, Old Highway 30, Fernhill, Skeans, Pellham See ROADS, Page A2
received minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center in Longview, Wash. Hamlin is also a St. Helens resident. Investigators said both were using safety restraints and the car’s airbags deployed. OSP troopers from St. Helens and Astoria offices responded to the scene to investigate. There is no evidence that alcohol or drugs were contributing factors. OSP is looking at driver fatigue as a possible reason for the accident.
