ST. HELENS — Canvas tents and antique military trucks have caught the eyes of passersby recently on Old Portland Road in St. Helens, where a local man is directing and producing “Combat Report,” a WWII action drama series that will be aired on a digital cable network this fall. A story conceived by Thad Smith of Scappoose, “Combat Report” follows an elite team of GIs as they fight their way across France in pursuit of a ruthless enemy. The show is produced by One-Eighty Films in cooperation with Luken Communications, Tuff TV Network and X Factor Entertainment Group. Smith says his concepts have been inspired by his father’s war stories “Combat,” “Rat Patrol” and “Band of Brothers.” He and his brother, Craig, filmed their 2010 WWII drama “Everyman’s War” in Columbia County as well. For the TV series, Smith wanted to use an ensemble cast, so he assembled a fictitious team of soldiers based off of stories from real WWII veterans. “I like the idea — especially after seeing Band of Brothers — of doing a ensemble cast about a group See FILM, Page A3
