Where does CC Rider go from here?

Scappoose Columbia County Rider is looking for a way to move forward with their goal of making public transportation available to as many people in the county as possible.

The transit agency faces no shortage of challenges, but with a new contractor on the horizon, and with a consolidation up for consideration, CC Rider might continue to grow its reach.

Deep budget cuts in past years, aging buses, staff turnover, issues with customer

service, mismanagement and other problems led CC Rider to their recent connection with MTR Western, a former charter bus company that became a northwest-focused commuter transit operation with clients such as Boeing. With a failed levy on the recent primary ballot, CC Rider needs a solution to continue operating.

CC Rider primarily operates on grants; the ridership is not large enough to support it. Transit Director Janet Wright said that is

Walkers take to the St. Helens students streets to fight suicide attend outdoor school

Hundreds of Walks Being Held Nationwide Through December 2016 Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States, yet suicide is preventable.

More than 500 people throughout Columbia County are expected to participate in the first annual Columbia County Out of the Darkness Community Walk hosted by The Scappoose Police Department & Columbia Community Mental Health at 11 a.m., September 10 at Scappoose High School. This fundraising walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s local and national education and advocacy programs and its bold goal to reduce the annual rate of suicide by 20% by 2025.

The public is invited to walk to raise awareness

about this important mental health issue. Suicide touches one in five American families. We hope that by walking we reduce stigma, save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.

The Columbia County walk is one of more than 375 Out of the Darkness Community Walks being held nationwide this year.

The walks are expected to unite more than 250,000 walkers and raise millions for suicide prevention efforts.

With this walk being the first annual Out of the Darkness Walk the Scappoose Police Department and Columbia Community Mental Health hopes to achieve their goal and raise over $7,500 and around

500 participants or more.

Speakers at the Out of the Darkness Walk will include Scappoose Police Chief Norm Miller, Lines for Life, and United Way to name a few.

“These walks are about turning hope into action,” said AFSP CEO Robert Gebbia. “Suicide is a serious problem, but it’s a problem we can solve.

The research has shown us how to fight suicide, and if we keep up the fight the science is only going to get better, our culture will get smarter about mental health, and we’ll be able to save more people from dying from depression and other mental health conditions.”

For many students, Outdoor Science School is a memory they take with them forever. Sixth grade students across the nation have long had the opportunity to spend time in the outdoors learning about the natural environment. This year, sixth grade students in St. Helens School District received that same opportunity thanks in part to a generous grant from Genentech.

Parents of St. Helens students notified the district of a grant opportunity. The sixth grade teachers were informed about a grant opportunity from Genentech, but realized they were on a short time frame. A small group convened and was able

to apply to Genentech for a portion of the funds needed to send 6th graders to Cedar Ridge Outdoor School Camp.

The teachers were very excited to find out that their grant was funded. The Genentech grant, along with financial support from the Gray Family Foundation, St. Helens Credit Union, and an anonymous donor, made Outdoor Science School a reality. Without their support, the students would not have been able to participate in this unique experience.

This spring, McBride and Lewis & Clark sixth grade students were able to spend two nights and three days at the camp, which is located in Vernonia. Students were immersed in science learning including natural flora and fauna species, traits of a healthy stream, character-

istics of soil, and people’s impact on the environment.

The sixth graders were able to learn from experience by getting into the Rock Creek, which runs along the property, and finding evidence of a healthy stream system. Students dissected a red wigglers (worms) composting bin to see how composting works to lessen our carbon footprint. The social implications of their experiences reached far beyond academic learning and made a profound impact on the students as individuals.

Teachers are already starting their efforts for next year’s sixth graders. With the help of our community members and business partners, they hope to continue to offer this opportunity for future students of St Helens School District.

Each year the Columbia County Rotary Club awards these grants to deserving students graduating in local school districts. In order to qualify for the scholarships, students must have demonstrated initiative, career-directed achievement and may have faced some life challenges.

Preschool Promise partnership expands access The Northwest Early Learning Hub is excited to announce that expanded, high-quality public preschool options are coming to Clatsop, Columbia and Tillamook counties. St. Helens School District, in partnership with The Connections Academy Preschool (The CAP Learning Center), will be delivering Preschool Promise to their communities starting in the 2016-‘17 school year.

The St. Helens Preschool Promise partnership will serve children ages 3 and 4. Sites will include classrooms at St. Helens High School and The CAP Learning Center.

Parents will find that there are several options that may meet their child’s needs. Depending upon site location, some of the needs that can be met for families will include: transportation, shorter school days, longer school days, no potty training requirement, special education services, meals, and more.

Families who are interested in having their child attend preschool in the fall, if they have not already

applied to or enrolled in another program, should pick up an intake form at St. Helens School District Office, St. Helens High School Office, St. Helens Public Library, The CAP Learning Center, both Subway locations and the WIC office. Families who have applied to Head Start, but who don’t qualify because of family income are also encouraged to complete an intake form.

Completed forms should be dropped off at one of the following locations: The St. Helens High School Office (2375 Gable Road), until 6/27/16, The St. Helens School District Office (474 N 16th Street) until 7/8/16, The CAP Learning Center (1050 Old Portland Road) until 7/8/16.

Completion of an intake form is not a guarantee of entrance into a specific program. For families that qualify, preschool may be free. For families that do not qualify, a recommendation to one of the Preschool Promise partnership programs will be made and tuition charges will apply.

Sheriff’s office to issue dog licenses The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office will take over sale and administration of the county’s dog license program beginning July1.

Dog owners can obtain licenses from the Sheriff’s office in person or by mailing an application including a current rabies certificate and the appropriate fee to the Sheriff’s office.

Licenses will no longer be available at the county clerks office.

Sheriff Jeff Dickerson said the county plans to expand the number of places dog owners can obtain a license.

Man arrested for attempted murder A Vernonia man was arrested June 25 for attempted murder and other charges after he shot at a vehicle on Highway 47.

Kodiack Glenn Stone, 26, is accused of attempted murder, attempted first degree assault, reckless endangering, use and carrying a dangerous weapon and menacing by Columbia County Sheriff’s office deputies.

According to Sheriff Jeff Dickerson, Stone Kodiack Glenn Stone fired a bullet at the

victim’s car as it passed by on Highway 47 near Lone Pine Road. The bullet shattered the window and lodged in the headrest. Dickerson said the Stone and the victim knew each other but declined to offer a possible motive, citing an ongoing investigation. The incident occurred June 23.

Stone is lodged in the Columbia County jail pending $75,000 bail.

Obituaries Louis “Michael” Brown December 22, 1959 ~ June 17, 2016

Charles J. Pardue January 12, 1960 ~ June 21, 2016

Louis “Michael” Brown passed away peacefully on June 17, 2016 in Portland, Ore. Born on December 22, 1959 in Ventura, Calif., to Lloyd and Irene Brown, Michael was the youngest of three boys.

He spent his childhood and young adulthood in California before moving to Oregon.

Louis, as he was known by his co-workers, was a dedicated employee of Letica Corporation, in St. Helens, for 24 years.

He lived a quiet life and

enjoyed photography, bike riding and his beloved video games. Probably best known for his seemingly gruff nature, he had a kind, generous heart and was a loyal friend to many.

Michael is survived by: his brothers, Leonard Brown, of Oxnard, Calif. and Philip Brown, of Lancaster, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of his life will be scheduled. Remembrance gifts may be made to Legacy Hopewell House Hospice in Portland.

Charles J. Pardue passed away after losing his battle with cancer on June 21, 2016. He was born on Jan. 12, 1960, in Sunnyside, Wash.

He graduated from St. Helens High School in 1978.

He went to college at Perry Institute. He worked at Boise for 35 years.

Chuck was a loving husband, father, brother and uncle. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family.

Charles was survived by his wife Lori; his daughters, Kimberly Riley, Michelle Montoya, Sarah DeVietro and Kaitlin Pardue; his

son-in-laws, Jason Riley, Matthew Montoya and Matt DeVietro; as well as two grandchildren, Abigail Montoya and Adrian Ojeda.

Additionally, he is survived by his mother, Francis Pardue; his mother-in-law, Delores Hulsopple; his siblings and their wives, Chris and Susan Pardue, John and Patricia Pardue, Tom and Debbie Pardue; his brother-in-law, Alan and Susan Hulsopple.

As well as many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Pardue, and his father-in-law, Thomas Hulsopple.

Within minutes he had his hooks in a possible offender. In an odd twist to the story, the person Hart connected with was a former schoolmate.

Hart arranged to meet his target at a park in his area, claiming the target would meet the 14-yearold daughter of Curtis Hart (a fictional person). That incident led to the arrest of Adam Olson, a 36-yearold Castle Rock resident.

Hart said he and a group of friends at the scene convinced Olson to call 9-1-1 on himself, turning himself over to authorities. Olson recently pleaded guilty to communication with a minor for immoral purposes

and was required to register as a sex offender.

In the Scheuermann case, Hart said he initially posed online as 14-year-old girl, but after Scheuermann exposed his genitals in a photo within their first few messages of their interaction, Hart said he offered to provide an additional minor, a 12-year-old Thai girl, at Scheuermann’s request. Hart said Scheuermann offered to provide drugs, alcohol and McDonald’s fast food for the meeting. Hart also alleged that Scheuermann wrote the names of the invented girls on his genitals with a ballpoint pen prior to the meeting.

With Scheuermann en route from St. Helens to Kelso, Hart alerted law

enforcement and requested their presence for the sting operation he initiated. Hart said when he confronted Scheuermann he made it clear that there were no girls and that law enforcement had been alerted.

Scheuermann attempted to flee back to St. Helens, and Hart said he tried to block Scheuermann’s vehicle with his own, which resulted what Hart described as a very low-speed collision.

Scheuermann was stopped and arrested in Kelso a short time later.

The Daily News in Longview, Wash. reported that Scheuermann admitted to coming to Kelso from St. Helens with the intent of having sex with two “girls.” The newspaper said Scheuermann told a

Voter registrations can be updated and or verified at oregonvotes.gov.

Clark also encourages voters to mail their ballots back early.

“If they find themselves not having voted that midweek prior to the election, use a county dropsite,”

Clark said. “Dropsite locations are currently posted on the county elections website, will be listed in the November voter’s pamphlet and disseminated to the news media prior to the election.”

In the months leading to the General Election, Clark said his staff would be busy.

“There is always room to improve, and improvement is a continuous process,” he said. “As such, there will be numerous things to review from the primary election and possibly address going into September and October.”

The battle between the presidential candidates has triggered high voter attention. Clark is predicting voter interest will spike in the General Election.

She was born on Dec. 20, 1938, in Cornucopia.

A memorial service was held on Sunday, June 26, 2016, at Columbia Community Hall, in Columbia City.

moisture and shade desirable seedlings) and mulching will also help your vegetables to survive on far less water.

Plants suited to summer gardening with little or no water after they get established (this doesn’t always work): tomatoes, peppers, some winter squash, and possibly some lettuce varieties, kale, and arugula.

Irrigation water is not an issue in a Columbia County winter. But cold, short days with far less light slows plant growth. Winter gardens have to be planted by mid-August and well established by late September to be productive in the depths of winter.

Plants well suited to winter gardens: Swiss chard, kale, arugula, leeks, and some other cabbage family greens can be grown outside with only a little protection with row covers on the coldest days. Lettuce, in particular can be grown in a cold frame or greenhouse most of the winter and outside through the until first autumn 28-degree frost. Carrots, turnips, parsnips, beets, and rutabagas can be stored in the ground until needed through about February (some turn bitter and degrade rapidly in quality in the ground after

that) if you have no field mice that would eat them. If you do, these crops need to be harvested and stored in an unheated garage or shed in sawdust in bins.

Crops for winter fresh storage: The root crops noted above plus winter squash, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, garlic, apples, pears, and quince. Check periodically for decay.

Crops for drying: Tomatoes, peppers, kale, shell beans, apples, pears, cherries, etc. You will need a food dehydrator to get the food quite dry so it won’t mold in plastic storage bags on a shelf in your pantry or freezer.

Crops for water bath (high acid) canning: Tomatoes only (without other vegetables in the mix), cucumber pickles, pickled green beans, fruit preserves, jams, and sauces.

Filled jars should be packed back in the boxes they came in with the cardboard dividers to keep them from breaking in an earthquake. Some people store these boxes under their beds.

If you pressure can, there are a lot more foods that can be kept in good condition for years. Be sure to follow all the up-to-date pressure canning recommendations (see

below) and have your pressure gauge tested periodically. We do that here at the Extension office.

There are staples that you probably can’t grow/hunt/ forage or catch enough of (or are cheaper to buy) but which you need to have at least a 30 day supply on hand include protein sources like canned tuna fish and dry beans, some oils for cooking and salads, and carbohydrate sources like sugar, honey, and flour, and finally, salt, and brown rice. You will need extra water to cook the rice and beans. It never hurts to have some chocolate.

Many herbs like rosemary, bay leaves, sage, and thyme can be grown with little or no water in the summer and can be harvested directly from the plant all winter long. You can dry all these herbs as well. You can best capture the flavors of some herbs in vinegar (tarragon is an example of an herb that loses most of its flavor dried but makes a nice flavored vinegar). Other staples might include tea or coffee and perhaps some wine or beer (home brewers might find themselves very popular in a food emergency).

Garden Plots I recently participated in a very well done disaster planning event in St. Helens. The county has had a lot of practice in this regard between the 1996 and 2007 floods, the 2008 Christmas eve snow storm, and various wind events. An active gardening community can’t be expected to provide food for all but can be a significant resource for the kinds of foods that won’t be shipped into an area in the initial recovery process such as vegetables and fruit.

I prepared the following piece for distribution at the Extension office booth that we staffed at the Emergency Preparedness Fair: Food may be in short supply in a major emergency like an earthquake, forest fire situation, heavy winter flood, wind, or snow storm, etc.

Police Reports St. Helens Police Department June 14 – Michael L. Johnson, 31, of St. Helens was arrested for driving under the influence of intoxicants after a traffic stop at 59720 Oliver Heights Lane.

June 14 – Harold Nelson Jr., 57, was taken into custody and transported from St. Helens Municipal Court to the Columbia County Jail being sentenced to 30 days in jail.

June 17 – Garrett Capsey, 24, of Deer Island was arrested for criminal mischief after slashing a tire on a vehicle parked in front of the Columbia Tavern. Capsey was lodged at the county jail.

June 17 – Wade Goodwin, 49, of St.Helens was arrested on a warrant at the St. Helens Library parking lot. Goodwin was lodged at the Columbia County Jail without incident.

June 17 – Zakkary Hackerd, 23, of Scappoose was cited and released for distribution of marijuana. Peter Chabala and John Dewitt were cited for possession of marijuana.

Scappoose Police Department June 11 – Following a traffic stop on Columbia River Highway near SW J P West Road, police charged Ejup Hyseni, 20, for unlawful possession of a schedule two drug and a felony warrant. Adam Hiatt, 19, was also charged with unlawful possession of a schedule II drug and minor in possession of alcohol.

June 14 – Police responded to Grocery Outlet on a report of third-degree theft. The items were later recovered.

June 15 – Police charged David Wendelschafer, 41 at Grocery Outlet for criminal trespass in the second degree. Wendelschafer was booked and lodged in the Columbia County Jail.

June 17 – Police responded to the 33000 block of SW Jenny Lane to assist Department of Human Services.

Enrique Tapia, 26, was arrested for violating his release agreement and was booked and lodged in the county jail.

June 17 – Following a traffic stop on West Lane Road

near NE Erin Drive, police impounded the vehicle Anita Pilakowski, 42, was driving.

Pilakowski was cited for driving uninsured.

June 18 – Police responded to the 52000 SW Keys Road for a domestic in progress.

Following an investigation, police charged Marco Meza Liera, 33, for third-degree theft – possession of stolen property.

June 18 – Police responded to the 34000 block of NE Egret Lane on a report of theft in the third degree.

June 19 – Following a traffic stop on Columbia River Highway near Crown Zellerbach Road, police impounded the vehicle Rochelle Breen, 59, was driving. She was cited for no operator’s license and driving uninsured.

June 20 – Following a traffic stop on Columbia River Highway near Gilmore Road, police charged Rhys Davis, 28, for unlawful possession of heroin and Mikole Weeks, 26, for unlawful possession of heroin and unlawful Possession of a scheduled two drug.

Fire Reports

Columbia River Fire & Rescue June 20 – A structure fire was reported at 122 S.8th St., St. Helens this past week. A fire on a porch also scorched a tree, but did not spread too far. CRFR recently confirmed a cigarette caused the fire.

The fire did not extend into the home, so it remained habitable.

June 20 – A structure fire was reported at 24817 Mosier Road in Clatskanie. CRFR provided mutual aid to Clatskanie Rural Fire Protection District.

June 21 – Electrical arcing was reported at 73982 Columbia River Highway in Rainier. An electrical panel was arcing and sparking. CRFR determined the cause to be a mouse that wedged itself between hot contacts. The mouse did not survive.

June 25 – A structure fire was reported at 12592 Columbia River Highway in Clatskanie.

CRFR provided mutual aid to Clatskanie Rural Fire Protection District.

We are continuing to introduce the Scappoose Police Department. The next to be introduced is Officer Phil Packineau.

Packineau graduated Parshall Public High School in Parshall, North Dakota in 1993. In 1994, he enlisted in the U.S Army where he served in the field artillery unit. While serving in the Army, Packineau met and married his wife Stephanie in 1997. In 2002, he was honorably discharged from the Army and moved to the Columbia County area.

While being a manager at various security companies Packineau graduated with his bachelor degree in business administration from Concordia University. In 2010, he was hired at the department for the

position of police officer and attended the Oregon State Police Academy.

Packineau has held the position of patrol officer, School Resource Officer (SRO), and is currently one of the department’s field training officers (FTO) and building search instructor.

Packineau has three children, ages 16, 14, and 1 year old. In his free time, he enjoys attending his children’s sporting events, spending time with family, and golfing.

Fire destroys St. Helens home

Fire crews from Columbia River Fire & Rescue and Scappoose Fire District responded to a reported structure fire at a residence at 434 Grey Cliffs Court in St. Helens at 9:35 p.m. on June 26. Crews arrived to find a two-story residence fully involved with flame.

Upon ensuring the occupants were safely out of the home, fire crews went to work fighting this very intense fire. According to Fire Chief Jay Tappan, the fire appeared to have started on the north side of the home under a carport

and then spread rapidly into the home.

Tappan said firefighters immediately engaged in a defensive attack to knock down the flames and prevent spread to other homes, outbuildings, and trees. The fire was declared under control after an hour of firefighting, but fire personnel worked for another two hours to ensure all the hot spots were extinguished. A small fire in a rotten log was also extinguished in the backyard of a residence downwind of the main fire scene.

The homeowners, John Mayer and Heather Talbert, were at home when the fire occurred and narrowly escaped injury. They said they had just turned-in for the evening when they heard unusual sounds downstairs. Upon investigation they saw flames on the north side of the exterior of the home and proceeded to exit as fast as possible with their family dog.

Fire damage and loss for the home and contents were estimated to be approximately $300,000 for

the home and $50,000 for contents. The property owners have insurance and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

CRF&R responded with four fire engines, a rescue unit, and several support vehicles. Scappoose Fire responded with an engine and a personnel support vehicle. A total of 22 fire personnel were on scene with no reported injuries.

The American Red Cross also dispatched a team to assist the family.

Eyewitness relives horror of fishing boat crash

It was a moment of horror for Tom Taylor.

The Vancouver, Wash. man was relaxing during a fishing trip on Multnomah Channel when he heard someone shout “hey.”

Turning to look, he saw a 23-foot fishing guide boat traveling at a high rate of speed headed straight for a smaller fishing boat with two men in it.

“It hit them at full speed,” Taylor said. “It was almost a t-bone. He ran right over the top of them” The force of the impact launched the guide boat over the smaller craft, which immediately started to sink.

Taylor estimates the guide boat traveled another 50 yards before coming to a halt.

Turning quickly to his companions, he said, “Those guys need help. We gotta go.”

Taylor and his fishing buddies witnessed the June 18 collision on Multnomah Channel between two fishing boats. Two men, Sang Hyun Kim, 61, and Jung Suk Lee, 57, both from Beaverton, were transported from the scene to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland with life threatening injuries.

Immediately after the collision, Taylor said, the fishing boat’s trolling motor still ran and the boat was doing slow circles in the water, fishing poles still in the rod holders. He said he saw two men laid out in the boat, both obviously seriously injured.

Taylor said the skipper of his vessel headed toward the fishing boat while he called 9-1-1.

“I grabbed a throwable floatation device,” he said, but in retrospect should have used the time to put on a lifejacket.

Taylor said the returning guide boat arrived shortly after his vessel did, at one point even bumping Taylor’s.

He saw a man, who would later be identified as the guide boat’s operator, Paul Woebkenberg Jr., 64, jump to the sinking vessel and lift the two men to safety.

“When he jumped into the boat,” Taylor said, “it really looked like it was sinking.”

The boat did capsize, its bow pointing up, he said.

Taylor said he takes issue with news reports calling Woebkenberg’s actions heroic. Woebkenberg did what would be expected of someone in that situation, he said. “I’m not a hero but we would have done what was needed.”

Days after the events of that Saturday morning, Taylor is obviously still haunted by those horrifying moments. He recounts helping sheriff’s deputies collect floating debris, at one point scooping a fishing license from the water with a net.

He said he and his buddies regularly fish Multnomah Channel and the Columbia River near St. Helens. But what started out as a trip to catch a few walleye along the pilings turned into a nightmare, a horror that may haunt Tom Taylor for a long time to come.

Defending champions triumph again Two defending champions and two former division champs demonstrated that they’re Columbia County Racing Association title contenders again this year as they each recorded main event wins Saturday at River City Speedway.

St. Helens drivers Scott Dorie, Scott McMullen, Brandon Potter and Bob Berg each drove their cars to main event wins.

Ray Elwess of Gresham and Vancouver’s Mike Opoka also won mains in the Wilcox and Flegel sponsored event at the Columbia County Fairgrounds facility in St. Helens.

Dorie, who turned age 59 Monday, celebrated his birthday a couple of days early by leading from start-to-finish to win the CCRA Dwarf Car 25lap main event. Dorie also won the trophy dash and he took second place in the heat race with his Aaron Hardesty Construction sponsored 1932 Ford Vicky two-third scale replica dwarf car. Richard Petty, 69, of Scappoose, was runnerup and Scott’s daughter Kylee, 19, took third for a career best main event finish in the Dwarf Car Division. Petty won the previous Dwarf Car main event on June 18.

“It was a real good race and I was sure happy that my daughter took third, so it was very exciting for both of us, “ said Dorie, who won the 2014 Dwarf Car Division title. “I’m preparing a new car and I’ll have it ready for the next race, so this was probably the last race in this car.”

McMullen was also a two-time winner as he won the Street Stock Divison trophy dash and main event with his McMullen Water Systems/ Alliance Automotive 1979 Chevrolet Malibu. Defending champion and current division points leader Justin McMullen (Scott’s son) was runnerup in the Fast Lube & Oil Chevy Malibu. Scott McMullen started seventh and he took the lead on lap eight and then led the remainder of the 25-lap event.

It marked the second time that the father/son duo notched a one, two finish. Scott won June 4 as well, while Justin, 26, took second.

“It was lots of fun and we sure had a real good night,” said Scott McMullen, who had a huge improvement from the previous race when he finished in last place June 18. “Things went real well in the dash and I passed Bernie Lujan on the last lap to win that race. Justin was right behind me for most of the main and we just continued running one, two most of the way, which was really fun.

Justin got close to me a couple of times, but I was able to hold him off. I think he could’ve passed me if he had an opportunity, but I was able to stay up front and get the win.”

Bernie Lujan of St. Helens, who won the last race June 18, took third in a 1976 Buick Regal owned by Dennis Daniels of Rainer. Gary Kordosky Sr. of Scappoose, was fourth.

Gollyhorn, a double duty driver who entered two CCRA race classifications, had a very a very impressive performance with a career best fifth place Street Stock main event finish while driving his Eaton’s Tire & Service Center/Versatile Glass Tinting 1976 Camaro.

Gollyhorn, 16, won the Tracer Division trophy dash and heat and he was the fastest qualifier.

Dustin Asher of Portland, won the main. Gollyhorn leads the point standings and he’s the defending series champion in the class for youth’s age 13-16.

“It was pretty cool to get a top-five Street Stock Division finish and it’s definitely pretty exciting to get my best finish ever,” said Gollyhorn, who has competed in two Street Stock mains this year and he recorded a 10th place finish in the May 7 season opener. “I was running in the lower portion of the track and following other cars, but then I decided to move to the outside and pass them and that worked out pretty good. It was pretty exciting at the end too when I had a drag race with Greg Brumbaugh down the front straightaway to get the fifth place position by just a very close margin. Getting a fifth place main event finish is definitely the highlight of my stock car racing career. I’m pretty sure that I’ll win another Tracer Division title as well, but I just wish there was a little more competition instead of having just a few cars.”

Portland’s Curtis Zelmer, Lujan and Matt Brown won the Street Stock heat races. Zelmer finished 16th in the Street Stock main. Zelmer, 74, the oldest competitor at the speedway, was also a double duty driver as he entered Dwarf Car events

and he finished seventh in the main.

Berg won the Four-Cylinder Division main and heat race with his Cozy Lawn Maintenance/Eaton’s Tire & Service Center 1997 Dodge Neon. It marked the first win ever in the series for Berg. Portland drivers John Gartner (second) and Dale Holland (third) followed Berg. Gresham’s Hal Farness took fourth and Portland’s Dick Gaboury took fifth. Longview racers Jason Scheibel (sixth) Cheryl Thompson (seventh) were next, followed by Natasha Rye of Warren, in the Alliance Automotive/Chubbs Shell 2007 Chevy Cobalt. It marked the forth straight top-10 finish for Rye, 24, a top Rookie-of-the-

Year contender in the FourCylinder Division.

Potter won the Modified Division main with his Corvallis AAMCO Transmission/RiKy Roofing open-wheel style modified race car. It marked the third win in four starts for Potter, 23, who leads the division standings. Potter had the fastest car in qualifying too as he timed in at 15.34 seconds on the quarter-mile clay oval track.

Brian Blasier of Scappoose, took second, followed by the husband wife duo of Pam and Mike Graham of Portland.

Steve Kaptur of St. Helens took fifth place, followed by Rainier’s Greg Greer. Pam Graham won the trophy dash and Blasier won the heat race.

Elwess of Gresham, won his third straight Sportsman Division main event in his Cozy Lawn Maintenance/Pacific Groundworks Inc. Camaro and he leads the series point standings. Elwess started seventh and he maneuvered up from last place to first place in the seven-car race. Elwess took the lead on lap eight from Rainier’s Sean Fox, who had to exit the track into the pit area with a flat tire.

Following a yellow flag caution period, Fox quickly changed the tire and returned to the track for the restart of the 25-lap race. Fox continued his strong effort and was runnerup in his Cascade Concrete/Northwest Competition Motorsports

Fox was a three-time winner as he won the trophy dash, heat race and took first place in qualifying.

“It was a rough race and I had to drive the final two laps with a broken left rear spring shock bracket, which really slowed the car down a lot since it was so close to the ground,” said Elwess, 55, who won Modified Division titles in 2004 and 2006 and is seeking to win his first ever Sportsman title. “I had a big enough lead to pull out the win though. I’m going to try and win my fourth straight race at the next race.”

Opoka, 63, won the Pacific Mini Sprint Division main

event in his M & Z Properties/ Hyper Racing open-wheel winged sprint car. It marked the fourth consecutive main event win for Opoka, the defending champion and current division points leader. Gresham’s Crystal Flath was runnerup for her career best finish in the series. Corbett’s Doug Pirtle was third, followed by Longview’s George Nichols and Vancouver’s Brian Beecher.

The fifth race of the season is the July 9 First Responders Night with personnel admitted for free with proper responders identification. A special 50-lap paint to pass race will also be held for four and six cylinder race cars.
