Local author gets story from unexpected source When Gail Downs, then a librarian, was asked for a project that might get kids interested in genealogy she thought of the old black suitcase that had been left in her care. The suitcase contained letters, photos, and documents dating as far back as 1921, and had belonged to her great aunt. The project not only succeeded in capturing the interest of the kids, who unearthed a fascinating WWII story, it got them a trip to the State Capital and even a mention by President Bill Clinton. Gail’s account of the story was printed in 1995, when she authored “The Black Suitcase Mystery, A World War II Remembrance.” The book is rich with photos, and is available for purchase in Lincoln City at Bob’s Beach Books, or for a $2 discount, in person from Gail; “I include local delivery and an inscription,” she said. AARP offers smart driver course that may help lower insurance fees The AARP refresher class for all licensed Oregon drivers will be held in Lincoln City on Thursday, Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lincoln City Community Center. There is also a class in Newport at the OCCC campus in South Beach, Rm. 140, on Tuesday, Oct. 4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The course is recognized by the State DMV as eligible for the insurance discount; seniors age 55 and older may receive a multi-year discount on their auto insurance after completing this six-hour course. There are no tests. Through the use of videos and discussions, the instructor will cover many topics, including new driver and pedestrian laws; changes in vision and hearing as we get older (the aging human brain) and tips for handling these changes; reaction times; driving in inclement weather; collisions and how to avoid them; modern vehicle technologies; and many more subjects helping those attending to become more effective and smarter drivers. There will be a lunch

Backpacks for Kids program volunteer and Senior Center sewing circle participant Jacque Van Damme is always on the go. “I do this to keep active,” she said. “I got involved with the Backpacks for Kids program because my best friend Karen Dummer helped start it—and she brought me into it.” Van Damme has been with the Backpacks for Kids program for five years and said it is important to volunteer in order to be aware of the needs of the community. “As seniors, if we are not involved in our communities in some ways then we settle into old beliefs and don’t keep up

In addition to community awareness, Van Damme said volunteer work has a positive benefit to her health. “After volunteering, you feel good,” she said. “You have helped the community and you feel better about yourself. Volunteer for any and all opportunities out there.” Van Damme commended the Lincoln City Senior Center—located inside the Community Center—and said it provides a variety of resources for seniors in the community. “We have a wonderful Senior Center,” Van Damme said. “There is no reason a senior should be alone in this community, because that place opens

their arms and includes you. We have had total strangers walk into our sewing group and we tell them, ‘Come join us, we will make room.’ It’s a good way for people who are new to the community to feel like they are a part of that community.” Van Damme explained that one of her sewing circle compatriots had moved from New York and knew no one—and the rest of the sewing circle continually checks in on her. “With any kind of volunteer work, you do need a network,” she said. “Any
of the organizations in town have a different network and it is a great way to meet people in the community.” The Lincoln City Quilters, the sewing group Van Damme participates in, meet every Tuesday and Thursday from 7:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Senior Center and is open to those 50 and older. Fee waiver offered for adoptions of ‘seasoned’ pets The Lincoln County Animal Shelter’s Seniors for Seniors program waives the adoption fee for senior animals to qualified senior citizens, 55 years of age or older. The only fee required is $5 for a one-year license. All adoption candidates have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped, flea treated and de-wormed! Adoptions include a free veterinary exam, two onehour training sessions with Dog E University, and a bag of food from the Feed Corral. If you have other dogs or small children, a meet and
greet is required; dogs in the home must be current on their rabies vaccination, and licensed with the shelter, and if you rent, landlord permission is required for the adoption by either phone, email or copy of a rental agreement. An animal is considered senior once they have reached 8 years of age, but just like people over 55, there are plenty of good years left!
