miles from “the east” because they longed to see the promise of the Savior fulfilled as the Scriptures said. The true “celebration” of Christmas has nothing to do with Black Friday, Cyber Monday, shopping Malls, or Santa Claus. Yes, yes, I know that this challenges the very economic fabric of our nation epitomized in the term “Black Friday.” But economics notwithstanding, God has something so much better for us that is free. That free gift which God gives and means for us to receive is Christ Jesus himself. You see, the Law of God (summarized in the Ten Commandments) demands that we fear, love and trust in God above all things (and that means perfectly) and in turn show that love in the way we treat our neighbor. And who is our neighbor? Our neighbor is everyone whom God places into our lives. Yet, if we look at our lives are they not filled with love of self rather than love of God and others? We have sinned and all deserve to be condemned to hell. The gift God wants you to have is
the gift of Christ and His perfect life so that you may stand before Him without the stain of sin on the Day of Judgment. God gives that gift in and through His Word and through Holy Baptism. But there is more to this Gift. God wants you to receive, that is, to have the gift of the death of Jesus. And yes, I know that sounds like a strange gift. Jesus died on the cruel instrument of the cross so that your sins would be nailed to that cross never to be brought up again, especially on the Day of Judgment.
You might be now asking, “How can I receive this great and gracious gift that God wants me to have?” We receive the death of Jesus in Baptism for St. Paul says that we are baptized into the death of Christ. And being baptized into Jesus’ death means that we will also rise with Him on the Day of Judgment as inheritors of His glorious heaven. So, you see, Christmas is a time of receiving and your Savior wants you to receive this gift for he says to you, “Whoever comes to Me, I will never, ever turn away.”

Ring in the year and take a hike The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department invites the public to ring in 2014 by participating in one of 30 guided hikes to take place in state parks on New Year’s Day. This is the third year that OPRD has participated in First Day Hikes, a nationwide initiative sponsored by America’s State
Parks (www.americasstateparks.org) to encourage people to enjoy the outdoors and celebrate the New Year by getting out for a walk in a state park. Last year, more than 420 people participated in First Day Hikes in Oregon. OPRD will waive the day-use parking fees on Jan. 1 for all
visitors to participating state parks that normally require a permit. 28 parks are participating in First Day Hikes this year:

Researchers at the University of Minnesota found that 80 percent of resolutionmakers have given up by Valentine’s Day. There are several different reasons why resolutions fail, and recognizing potential pitfalls can help people stick with their positive changes throughout the new year. The following are a few ways to ensure your resolutions last the year. • Don’t make an unrealistic resolution. Instead of setting a lofty, out-of-reach goal, establish incremental goals with tangible dates. • Don’t go it alone. You’re more likely to have success with keeping a resolution if you have outside support. Having a support system in place can motivate and inspire. • Make resolutions for the right reasons. Making resolutions for the wrong reasons can be counterproductive. • Avoid boring resolutions. Making fun resolutions will probably help you stick to them. Enjoyable resolutions are much easier to keep. • Avoid expensive resolutions. If you cannot afford a resolution, how can you keep it? • Keep resolutions private if you so prefer. Once you have met your goal, then you can share your success with others. • Don’t give up too easily. Some people are up for a challenge and others are not. Resolutions typically require a little extra effort, especially in the early stages. Resolutions will not necessarily be easy to keep, but the longer you stick to a resolution the easier it becomes to make it a reality, so resist the temptation to throw in the towel too early.
