Brookings-Harbor School District starts year filled with promise and potential
ood news — School is about to start. We hope you had a great summer. With the start of the 2019-20 school year, our talented and dedicated BrookingsHarbor School District staff is excited for new opportunities to improve the lives and futures of our students and to improve services to local families. Our district mission is to cultivate a safe, highly effective, and collaborative learning environment where every student can succeed, and to do so in partnership with students, parents, staff, and community. Thank you to all of those in the community who continually step up to the plate to help our students through volunteering of their time and donations. The legacy of supporting our schools is what makes our
community a great place to live and educate our students. We invite everyone to get involved through volunteering at our schools. Make an impact by joining a school site council, Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) or the BHHS Boosters. Attend a monthly school board meeting, or simply reach out to your child’s teacher, school principal or our Temporary Superintendent, Dawn Granger, when you have a question or concern. If you are the parent or guardian of a school-age child, please visit the school website for the academic year calendar, details of bell schedules, bus schedules, school supply lists, and more. Our schools have staggered start dates from Sept. 3 to Sept 6 depending on grade level. Please note that

Now is a good time to take care of school and activity registration activities online, make a family plan for transportation and good attendance, and to learn more about support programs offered by the schools. We hope to see you at the annual Back-toSchool Community Breakfast from 7:30 to 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27, in the BrookingsHarbor High School cafeteria, 625 Pioneer Ave. At that event, we will share the results of the annual Stuff the Bus School Supply Drive hosted by KURY Radio, and welcome new teachers and staff. The breakfast is free while supplies last ($5 suggested donation). Finally, keep in mind that August is the time when activities really increase in prepa-
ration for the new school year. Fall sports activities are starting, buildings are in their final preparations for the arrival of students and staff, and grounds and construction projects are concluding. Teachers and staff will be on campus for an in-service week from Aug. 26 to 30. With the increased activities around the school district, please watch for pedestrians, observe crosswalks and street signs, and maintain a careful presence as you drive your vehicle around the campus. Brookings-Harbor School District Food Service - did you know? Here are five. tasty facts about food service in Brookings-Harbor Schools.
1. Kalmiopsis Elementary is a Provision 2 school. This means it serves FREE breakfast and lunch daily to all Kalmiopsis students during the regular school year. Azalea Middle School and Brookings-Harbor High School provide free and reduced meals to students who qualify.
2. Kalmiopsis Elementary launched a “Breakfast in the Classroom” program in Fall 2017. Every day, students have the opportunity to eat a free, simple breakfast after the bell in their classroom, providing them with the nutrition needed to succeed throughout the school day. 3. Our Brookings-Harbor High School Extended School Day Program partners with the Brookings Harbor
Community Helpers Emergency Food Bank to provide study snacks and weekend “Snack Packs” to students. This program also provides free tutoring and a ride home three days per week when school is in session. The food bank also provides “Snack Packs” for the free summer meals program. 4. Our school district applied for and won a new grant from the Oregon Department of Education’s Child Nutrition
Programs to expand our 2019 free summer meals program to reach more youth in the community. In addition to adding dates to the summer meal service at the high school, the school added a retrofitted school bus to serve meals at sites across the communities of Brookings and Harbor. The bus is painted like a watermelon and called the Bites of Brookings or “BOB” for short.

School year health checklist for parents Start the school year off on a healthy note August marks back-toschool season, an ideal time for parents in Oregon to help improve their children’s health. Before schedules become packed with classes, homework and extracurricular activities, here’s a backto-school “health checklist” to help give children a better chance to succeed inside and outside the classroom: Get a Comprehensive Eye Exam About 80 percent of what children learn is through their eyes. With that in mind, a child’s first comprehensive eye exam should occur before age 1, again at age 3 and before entering school. If no vision issues are detected, school-aged children should have an
exam at least once every two years. Also, a school’s vision screening is not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam, as screenings can miss conditions such as poor eye alignment, focusing issues and farsightedness. The inability to see clearly can affect a child’s physical, emotional and social development, which in turn can affect academic and athletic performance. Children often don’t complain if their vision isn’t normal, so it’s important to look for possible signs such as squinting while reading or watching television, difficulty hitting or catching a ball, or headaches when watching 3D movies. Also, be aware of digital ye strain, which is caused by
prolonged use of computers or smartphones. Help your child practice healthy vision habits by keeping computer screens at least 30 inches from their eyes, resting their eyes every 20 minutes and blinking frequently to avoid dry eyes. Get a Dental Cleaning Maintaining proper oral health matters more than just keeping a sparkling smile – it’s also important for good overall health. This is especially true for children, as untreated dental problems may diminish attention, decrease self-esteem and limit a child’s ability to learn at school. Tooth decay is largely preventable, yet it ranks as the most common chronic
disease among children. About 33 percent of young kids (ages 2 to 8) have cavities in their baby teeth, and 20 percent of kids in the same age group have cavities in their adult teeth. With that in mind, parents should schedule regular dental exams every six months, especially at schools that require a back-to-school dental checkup. For parents with teenagers, it is important to recognize the risks of opioid addiction, especially after wisdom teeth removal. If you or a loved one is prescribed an opioid following a dental or other medical procedure, ask your health care professional if there are alternatives, including overthe-counter pain relievers
such as a combination of acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Get Recommended Immunizations Many schools in Oregon require that children are properly immunized before they enter the classroom to help to avoid serious diseases and prevent other students from contracting them. Children’s vaccines are 90% to 99% effective and may help protect kids from diseases such as mumps, tetanus and chicken pox. By helping reduce the risk of contracting potentially preventable diseases such as the flu, children may have fewer school absences. Parents should check with their doctor to deter-
mine what immunizations are appropriate based on age. Most shots are given by the time children are 2 years old, but some are administered into the teen years. If your child runs a low-grade fever or has swelling in the shot location after the immunization, these minor side effects typically last a couple days. Apply a cool, wet washcloth on the sore area to help ease discomfort but check with your doctor about the appropriateness of over-the-counter pain medications. Back-to-school season is an exciting time for many children and their parents. Consider these guidelines to help encourage your child’s health and success throughout the school year.

A message from District Superintendent Wilson T

he Central Curry School District 1 is pleased to welcome back its students and families for the 2019-2020 school year. The new school year will begin on Tuesday, September 3, 2019. The district anticipates an enrollment of approximately 475 students in grades K-12. A new feature for the school year is a revised daily schedule. In previous years, the district released students thirty minutes early each Thursday and had monthly
early release days resulting in half-days of instruction. The new schedule will have regular days on Monday – Thursday with a dismissal times of 3:00 p.m. at Riley Creek Elementary School and 3:12 at Gold Beach High School. On Fridays, elementary and middle school students will be released at 1:22 and high school students will be released at 1:31. The new Friday schedule will provide district staff consistent time for professional development and planning activities as well as reduce the amount of instruction missed by students who travel long
distances for athletic contests. There will be no half-day early release days this year with the exception on December 20 to begin Winter Break. The district welcomes several new staff members to the district. New staff members at Riley Creek Elementary School include Michelle Hamm (kindergarten), Dawn VanHall (first grade), Danielle Sprouse (second grade), Bradley Rohner (second grade), Debbie Watson (fifth grade) and Deborah Dorn (special education). New staff at Gold Beach High School include Michelle Pearce
(advanced mathematics) and Jake Bigelow (science). Kelsie Kershaw will be the new district music teacher. Jack Prater is the new transportation supervisor. The Central Curry School District Board of Directors welcomes newly elected Kailey Clarno to the board. Andy Wright will serve as Board Chair and Scott McNair will be the Vice Chair. Other members include Nancy Sorensen and Luke Martinez. The Board meets on the third Wednesday evening of the month at 6 p.m. The Board was scheduled to hold a work session on August 21
at 5 p.m. to discuss district goals for the 2019-2020 school year. Students and staff will return to school this fall with upgraded technology features including faster internet and additional wireless capabilities and new tablets for student use. Students in grades K-2 will be introduced to a new English/Language Arts curriculum. Additional funding was made available by the Board to update curriculum materials at both schools. A new district website is available at www.ccsd.k12. or.us where new school sites can be reached.

safely open school doors on time. If the roads are not safe for buses, this would most definitely influence the decision to delay or close schools for the day. The decision to delay/close school and school functions is usually made as early in the morning as possible, but could occur anytime during the day based on current weather conditions. Unless
otherwise stated, all activities that take place on school grounds and in school facilities such as breakfast service, after-school sports and community meetings are also cancelled during a school closure.
